I have never been so impressed by a copywriter
like I have been with Joe. I saw him speak a long
time ago at a Mark Joyner event and bought this
book. I have had it by my side ever since.
I couldn't recommend it enough!

Of the dozens of books I have read on the subject this one is the only one that I feel was well worth the purchase price.
Ideas backed by facts not opinions.
Wow - tremendous book.......2007-01-03
I think it was about the second chapter, maybe earlier where he mentioned the 'magic stat thermostat'. Well, back when I was a kid in the early 80's (read like 10 years old), my dad used to get tons of mail order catalogs (like Hemmachler, sharper image, etc...), and liking technology at a young age, I used to look through them. Well, JS&A must have been one of them as well, as I specifically remembered this ad! I recalled the ad tearing the product to shreds before recommending it (I even remebered what the thing looked like). It was that substantantial, that as a 10 year old (roughly), I recalled it today. At the same time, I recalled another ad that I thought was odd - some handheld game that was supposed to be some big conspiracy. Sure enough, that was one of his ad examples at the end of the book.
This alone should be a testament to exactly how powerful his ads are. Not too mention, his writing style as an educator in the field of written ads is astounding - I could not put the book down.
Although geared toward catalog sales, the techniques clearly can apply to the web as well. So, if you are interested in selling anything - order this book now!
One of the best books on crafting mouthwatering copy ever written!.......2005-09-14
Joe Sugarman is a copywriting and marketing genius.
Probably known best for his "BluBlocker" sunglasses ads, Joe has provided aspiring (and experienced) copywriters with a treasure trove of useful information, tips and step-by-step techniques.
During the 80's Joe held annual Copywriting and marketing workshops and smart marketers willing paid thousands to learn his "secrets".
As far as I can tell, Joe has shared every last one of those million dollar secrets in this must have manual.
This one is a "no brainer". Buy it. Read it. Use it.

After reading all the 5 star reviews I have nothing to add. I agree this is an excellent book.

A Practical Blueprint ..........2007-09-08
Worth whatever the current going price is as you read this.
Good for you if you need a blueprint or a template for creating winning proposals for consulting assignments.
I would suggest that you use this along with information freely available from Perry Marshall.
Excellent........2007-03-08
Although I tend to find that most of the books in the "Ultimate" series have lot's of repetition, each is specific on its focus. It's difficult to dissociate the topics in his other books completely. For example, I find it quite normal for a discussion on proposals to also include a topic on fees or customer interaction. Alan Weiss has two seperate books on these specific examples. I recommend that you buy the entire series. Sure it's a few hundred bucks and you will find that in total about 50% of the content is repated elsewhere. But that's fine. It will only sink in better and what really counts is that on aggregate you get excellent value for your money.
Excellent but Redundant.......2007-02-15
This book contains all you need to know regarding the preparation of a consultancy appraisal. Alan Weiss is truly the expert when it comes to this. I will say this, however. Unless you require the additional "hand holding" contained herein, you can get essentially the same wisdom from his book "Million Dollar Consulting Toolbook". I agree with another reviewer that if you cannot afford spending a hundred bucks or so to help get your business started, you probably are not adequated capitalized. However, there is no sense in spending a hundred more than you have to. If you can afford it, buy this one, if not, get the other one i mentioned.
Looking for a book that is TOTALLY appropriate for the PROFESSIONAL Consultant? Seek no further!.......2007-02-07
For the first time, and I do not know why, I have found a book that is full of relevant advice, common sense, and just good stuff all round! Since the start of my career as a consultant in 1989, and not finding anything like this, this book is going to revolutionize any consulting practice. A definite "NEED TO" book for ALL consultants who call themselves PROFESSIONAL. Allan, to you, just complements.... Will meet you somewhere along the path...
How to Write a Proposal That's Accepted Every Time - You Need This Book!.......2005-12-17
I purchased this book earlier this year. While we don't often submit written proposals, we used the techniques to close over $200,000 in business in the first few months.
Then, mid-year we had four different opportunities to submit written proposals. I used the checklists and templates to craft winning proposals. We actually decided not to do business with one client after working through the proposal. The other three proposals were accepted. The three written proposals were worth $417,000.
I'd say my $149.00 investment had a huge ROI and will continue to do so.
This book is a MUST HAVE for new and seasoned consultants. Alan gives the best information you can find. He gives you practical and applicable information based on his own model of success. Also read The Million Dollar Consultant...unless you're not interested in succeeding as a consultant.

Best starting point for learning Arabic.......2007-06-25
When I first starting learning arabic on my own this was the first book I bought after checking many other titles. If you are going to start out by yourself this is the perfect book to choose and it is cheap. It covers just enough without confusing you too much and introduces the material in an accessible and concise manner. The key to learning how to read and write is practice, practice, and much more practice, and that is why the simplicty of this book is important in my point of view. It gives you the structure to learn and gets out of your way, the rest is up to how dedicated you are.
Excellent.......2007-05-13
Having tried for several months to learn Arabic, through various means, I came across this book, bought it, and suddenly, it all makes sense to me. This is the best source I have found in my quest to understand this increasingly important language. About halfway through the second chapter, everything clicked into place in my mind and "I got it". If you are going to learn Arabic, start here first, and the learning process will be made so much easier.
Excellent book!.......2007-05-04
I have been trying to learn Arabic for the past few years. I've bought many books but none have been as helpful as this one. I wish I knew about it before. I probably would have been speaking, reading and writing Arabic a long time ago.
Excellent introduction to the Arabic alphabet...........2007-04-23
This book is exactly what its name implies, a good introduction to the Arabic alphabet. It does a good job of introducing the letters as they occur in different positions, introduces some basic vocabulary and gives you a good grounding for further study. It accomplishes this goal in less than 100 pages in a very accessible, non-intimidating way.
I say this is a good start because to actually read and write Arabic one would need to know more grammar and some of the nuances of the script which are not covered. However, for an introduction this is very thorough and some of the shortcomings are discussed in the spotlight reviews, so I won't repeat them here.
As a Westerner who has a casual interest in learning Arabic and Arabic script, I found this book to be ideal. A good accompaniment to it is Read and Speak Arabic for Beginners which for about $12.00 gives you some basic vocabulary, a 1 hour CD to help with pronunication and a set of flashcards to review recognizing words. This book and the one I'm reviewing make an excellent, inexpensive and fun introduction to a very difficult language.
Excellent.......2007-03-08
This product was very useful for me to start to learn arabic langauge. I recommend this book and advise for who want to learn arabic language, do not go right to grammar before buy and read this book.

Very informative, not dry........2007-09-28
I was expecting an essay-type book when I ordered this, the author uses humor to keep your interest while successfully explaining rather boring topics. I easily read this book in two hours without getting tired of it and retained most of what I'd read. This book tells you all you need to know about writing except what you should write about! I was impressed, it's not a very long book, but is packed full of good information.
Writer's bookshelf classic.......2007-09-23
James N Frey's book is already one of the classics and a damn good addition to any writer's bookshelf. He covers the whole process even though the book may seem too short to do so: The pace is fast, humorous and gritty from the first (characters, who they are and how to build them, by far the best starting point) all the way to the last(The Zen of Novel Writing, a ten page summary of the 'writers life'). I thought the second chapter (Three Greatest Rules of Dramatic Writing: Conflict! Conflict! Conflict! the most useful. Points are illustrated with examples from authors one knows and can relate to. A single objection: In an example (for 'Point of View', p. 100 in my copy) a single action revolver is fired by pulling the trigger over and over again (should be 'double' action). A great book and to me, worthwhile.
Q
Damn Good Advice!.......2007-09-23
This is a damn good book about creating tight, well-constructed stories that stand a chance of selling. The discussion on Homo Fictus, advice on proving your premise, and many other gems are all worth buying this book to read. If you have only one book to guide your first steps into novel-writing then this is the one. I've read dozens but this book was the most fun, easiest to digest, and easiest to put into practice. Top banana!
Great for Beginners.......2007-08-09
After reading the reviews before I bought this book, I actually decided to start off reading The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri, which Frey references a lot in How to Write a Damn Good Novel. It definitely helped, so I would recommend reading that first. This novel was excellent. It was easy to read and understand, and has tons of great writing tips. I would certainly recommend this book for beginners. Don't forget to take out your pencil and highlighters!
IT IS A "DAMN" GOOD BOOK.......2007-08-08
I think this book presents much information to writers. We can all benefit from Frey's opinions on characterization and storytelling. I picked up some pointers on dialogue. You don't have to be a beginner to learn from it. As a person struggling to write my first novel, I am feeling more inspired since reading it and wish more people would do the same.

The bible on self-publishing. Highly recommended by virtually everyone in the industry -- even other authors of books on the subject (many of whom probably followed the advice in Poynter's previous 11 editions).
Book Description
In this digital age, self-publishing is an attractive, viable option for many writers — if they only knew where to start. Dan Poynter demystifies the publishing process, breaking it down into an approachable, step-by-step procedure that anyone with a little time and motivation can easily master. From tips for writing more efficiently to shipping the book out the door, this encyclopedic guide covers everything the author/publisher needs to know, including typesetting, layout, and printing; obtaining an ISBN; forming a publishing company; creating effective press kits; getting marketing and promotional advice; printing on demand, downloading books and e-books; getting the book in stores and catalogs; producing profitable spin-offs such as audio and videotapes, excerpts, and foreign-language editions; and much more.
Download Description
With this book, you will learn how to speed write your book; copyright it yourself; bypass publishers; set up your own book publishing company; promote your books with book reviews, book signings, feature articles and radio/TV interviews; get your book into bookstores, specialty stores, catalogs and on the Web; and make spin-offs of your book. Nearly every one wants to write a book. Most people have the ability, some have the drive, but few have the organization. Therefore, the greatest need is for a simple system, a road map. The basic plan in this book will not only provide you with direction, it will promote the needed drive and expose abilities you never thought existed. Writing a book is probably easier than you think! If you can voice an opinion and think logically, you can write a book. If you can say it, you can write it. Most people have to work for a living and therefore can spend only a few minutes of each day on their book. Consequently, they can't keep the whole manuscript in their head. They become overwhelmed and confused, and find it easy to quit the project. The solution is to break up the manuscript into many small, easy-to-attack chunks (and never start at page 1, where the hill looks steepest). Then concentrate on one section at a time and do a thorough job on each one. Dan was prompted to write this book because so many authors and publishers wanted to know his secret to selling so many books. Now he is revealing to you the secrets of writing, producing and promoting your book-the good life of self-publishing.

It's like a brochure.......2007-10-05
This is a great book, the problem is Dan has joined the likes of Dan Kennedy and Bill Glazier and many other info sellers. This book is really just a brochure for all the other products that Dan Poynter sells.
Instead of being a book that gives you 100% of the ammunition you need to publish a book, he gives you a brief overview and then tries to sell you hundreds of other items, this system is great for Dan, but not for the audience, because it's very expensive.
Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual Review.......2007-09-05
Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual is an excellent book. It provides a solid foundation for the new self-publishing author. It is a bit long, but provides a wealth of good information. Buy it.
Simply the Best!.......2007-08-28
Dan Poynter's book is simply the best reference guide to publishing I've read. The book is easy to follow, full of meaningful tips and information, as well as resources. I hired my book cover designer from the book! BTW, Robert Aulicino! This is just an overall great book.
I have read the book from cover to cover and reading it never fails to yield some tidbit of info that moves me forward in my marketing campaign for my book due to be released November 2007.

Review of Dan Poynter's Self-Publishing Manual- 16th Edition.......2007-08-23
I am the author of a book about my four month old premature daughter born at just 18 ounces For the Love of Rachel: A Father's Story. Even though I worked with a publishing company rather than self published, this book was immensely helpful in totally understanding the process involved with both writing and marketing a book. Whether you are self-published or have a contract with a publishing company, knowing the right way to approach PR and distribution is essential. This book is one of the best that I have come across!

Dan's book is phenomenal. It is power-packed with the information for the person investigating the self-publishing environment. As an author and founder of a local writers group, I continue to be impressed with this book.

If You Sell Something, Read This Book.......2007-08-28
Jeffrey has written a number of books and this is one you should have if you have to sell anything to anybody. Lots of ideas, fun to read, and most importantly, the stuff works if you will just do it. I always like a person who practices what he preaches. Jeffrey does that. Read it and learn.
Fun and interesting.......2007-08-28
It is a cool little book loaded with practical sales advice. Everyone who has seen it at my house, has looked at it, and asked to borrow it. The ideas, though not original, are refressing non the less, and is a wonderful reminder of the most basic ways to manipulate without other people feeling that way.
Book Description
All students and professors need to write, and many struggle to finish their stalled dissertations, journal articles, book chapters, or grant proposals. Writing is hard work and can be difficult to wedge into a frenetic academic schedule. In this practical, light-hearted, and encouraging book, Paul J. Silvia explains that writing productively does not require innate skills or special traits but specific tactics and actions. Drawing examples from his own field of psychology, he shows readers how to overcome motivational roadblocks and become prolific without sacrificing evenings, weekends, and vacations. After describing strategies for writing productively, the author gives detailed advice from the trenches on how to write, submit, revise, and resubmit articles; how to improve writing quality; and how to write and publish academic work.
Customer Reviews:
Great motivator for professors.......2007-09-17
This little book gives a lot of reasonable techniques for increasing your professional writing. It is also quite funny and down to earth.
A Must-Read for all burgeoning psychologists.......2007-09-01
Great advice from a great writer. The book is quick and easy to read, and, at least for me, very motivating. I can't wait to put his advice into practice!!!
The main piece of advice in this book is something that most people who have been in academia long enough will have heard before. The beauty of this book is not the novelty of the advice, but rather the straightforward way it is put. After reading the book, there are no possible excuse left for not getting started... The only option is to sit down and get to writing.
I would rank this right up there with "The Compleat Academic" on the must-reads of graduate training in psychology.
I didn't want to like it.......2007-08-25
I remember when this little pisher and James C. Kaufman, who wrote the little blurb on the front, were just undergrads. There's little here that doesn't appear in Boice's tome "How Writers Journey to Comfort and Fluency," but this is actually much more accessible, brief, and witty. The suggestions are quite behavioral and simple. He challenges some irrational cognitions that keep people from writing and recommends intuitively appealing interventions. These techniques have worked for me for years. I knew it was really good because as I read it I got more and more angry that I hadn't written something like it myself.
Fun and Motivating!.......2007-08-23
I enjoyed this easy-to-read book. As a grad student, I am always using the myths that are debunked in this book. I recommend it to anyone who needs a kick in the pants and a little encouragement to begin that big project! There is also useful info about grammar and structure of academic writing.
"How to Write A Lot" is incredible........2007-08-14
As a graduate student of psychology, I can always improve my writing. The strategies that P.J. Silvia's offers are the best tips I've ever received. I feel so confident that this book will make a big impact of my future writing. With a quick read, it's the greatest writing book out there.
Book Description
To be useful, scientific research needs to be explained clearly to others--to colleagues, to administrators, to foundations and governmental bodies, and to the public. This thoroughly revised edition of the classic How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper gives beginning scientists and experienced researchers alike practical advice on writing about their work and publishing what they write. The core of the book consists of a "how-to" guide to writing and publishing research articles for scientific journals, explaining every step of the process, from choosing a suitable journal for your work to presenting the results and citing references. In addition to the information on writing for scientific journals, this book provides additional advice for the scientist of the 21st century:
What ethical issues are important in scientific publishing?
What should a scientist know about rights and permissions?
How does a scientist write a grant proposal, or prepare progress reports for administrators?
What should a scientist know to work well with the media, or to write for a general audience? All of this practical information makes How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper the essential guide that scientists need for succeeding in the competitive environment of today.
Customer Reviews:
Best book for publishing scientific results.......2007-07-27
This is the all-in-one reference every newcomer (and experienced) researcher should read to learn how to effectively write scientific papers.
The writing style is extremely clear and concise, presenting the most important concepts and advices in a very straightforward way. Contents are organized in very short chapters, so you can immediately get the picture and start improving your skills. It also has many funny stories and comics that help you enjoy the reading.
In brief: if you want to master in good scientific papers, budget proposals, writing your doctoral thesis, good presentations... This should be your first choice.
Final note for non-native English speakers/writers like me: you will find invaluable references at the end of the book about how to use adequate connectors and expressions, as well as a whole chapter specifically devoted to how to write science in English as a second language.
Very helpful.......2007-05-28
I found this book to be very helpful and easy to read. Great index to find exactly what you need to reference fast. Definitely recommend if you need to write a manuscript or present your data.
How to Write & Publish . . ........2007-05-12
This is the best book I have ever read about writing and publishing scientific papers. I have all 6 editions and have used them over the years in a scientific communication course I teach to graduate students. The information is so practical, and the use of humor makes what can be a very dry, dull subject enormously entertaining. I recommend this book to anyone, regardless of scientific discipline, who has to publish research papers. The text is very simple and clear -- almost like reading a recipe.
How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper: 6th Edition.......2007-03-09
I think this book is great even if you already have experience writing scientific papers and have published. It certainly opened my eyes to things I should keep in mind when writing for a journal. I'd recommend it to anybody. I'd also like to add that I am currently taking a scientific writing course and the professor mentioned that in his opinion, this is the best scientific writing book he has come across.
More than excellent!.......2006-12-20
I find this book, how to write and publish a scientific paper, is required for all scientists. The book simply covers everything that you need to communicate in scientific field. The book is well-written in rational order and provides answers for every question related to scientific communications. I do recommend also Scientific English by Dr. R. A Day along with this book.

You must buy this book.......2007-05-10
If you ever think you will have to write a fundraising letter, you NEED this book. Too many people think it is just like writing any other kind of letter but it isn't. There is a rhyme and, more importantly, a reason to it. Don't write a fundraising letter without reading this book first.
How To Write a Successful Fund Raising Letter.......2007-05-07
Excellent for a review of those with experience and super for those new at the experience. We have used it for both occasions
Disappointed.......2007-01-17
I am not an expert in writing fundraising letters. So, when I found a book with a title "How to write successful Fundraising Letters" it was as if I had won the lottery. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it because I was on a dealine to write a fundraising letter for a non-profit organization for which I had volunteered. I ordered the book, and paid just as much to have it deleivered the next day (local bookstores do not carry it). I found the book to be a tutorial and not something I could quickly benefit from. It is written to teach how to properly write and follow-up a fundraising campaign letter. The samples provided were very specific to 3-4 scenarios and did not offer much context. I guess I was looking for a book with hundreds of samples so that I could pick and choose phrases, paragraphs, etc.
Success at Last.......2007-01-11
I have toyed around with various funderaising letters over the years, reinventing the wheel each time. This book is a tremendous guideline for writing great fundraising letters and has many great examples.
I was able to raise over $100,000.00 in a recent campaign and for the first time I have had a number of people comment on how well the letter appealed to them, and how well it was written. I keep this book close at hand.

Book Description
Rulemaking is the single most important function performed by agencies of the government. Cornelius Kerwin shows us why this is the case with the third edition of his important and highly regarded text.
Calls for smarter, cheaper, yet more accountable government increasingly affect the definition and implementation of public policy in the United States. Kerwin argues that while Congress and the president provide the general framework for the government's mission, rulemaking fills in the myriad details that define the law and delineate how each agency carries out its specific responsibilities. It is no wonder that so much intense political activity surrounds rulemaking. The third edition--comprehensively revised with new research, incorporation of recent scholarship, and fresh analysis of the George W. Bush administration's impact--is an invaluable guide to navigating the ins and outs of this important process. This unique and accessible book contains the most current and accurate information available on a crucial yet under-studied subject.
What's new?
-
Survey research - further examination of public participation, including an update of the interest groups' involvement survey, shedding new light on the tactics used to influence rulemaking
-
Data - up-to-the-minute figures on the volume of rulemaking and related actions
-
Recent developments - alterations of rulemaking procedures in response to actions by Congress, the president, and the courts, as well as treatment of efforts by the Bush White House to direct and manage aspects of the process
-
Expanded treatment - new information on the systems that agencies devote to management of the rules, along with additional insight on "electronic rulemaking"

I finished with more questions than answers........2003-02-25
I am on an endless quest, it seems; to find a book on the administrative state that is informative while being at least mildly enthusiastic about its subject. This book starts out enthusiastic. This book certainly started with enthusiasm. The first chapter, in fact, is devoted to convincing us why the administrative state is a superb American invention (a view I do not always share!) Chapter 5, which is devoted to public participation in the Admin. state also bubbles with giddiness.
Like a horse on crack-cocaine, though, this book stars with gallant speed, slows down fast and ends with an mild gasp. I'm sure this was not the authors intention. There are two main reasons. First, as the book is structured so that each chapter examines another area of admin. state rule making (oversight from the 3 branches, rulemaking structure, inherent paradoxes of the process) the first two chapters, which are almost overviews of the rest of the book, builds up high expectations. For example, when the first chapter lightly nibbles at rulemaking's structural issues, tow paragraphs in we are told that we will need to wait untill another chapter for a discussion. The author does this repeatedly throughout the book, thus leaving the reader in a constant hang.
The second reason for the flickering finish of the book is that, and unfortunately as with most admin. state books, not much save for completely varied anecdotal information is offered. How are rules written, the book asks; it depends on the administration, it answers. What about modes of public participation and debate? Depends on the rules of the comission. After a while, its almost pointless to read the next chapter as we begin to guess the answer to each question posed.
The reason, though, for the three stars is this: Chapter 1 (on justifications for the admin. state), Chapter 3(paradoxes inherent in the rulemaking process) and Chapter 7 (the role of theory in rulemaking and its reform) are actually decent and informative chapters. Vagueness aside, they do provide useful anecdotes. Also Chapters 3 and 7 present ideas, discussions and points that are all but ignored in other books on admin. state rulemaking. Buy the book, read those 3 chapters and maybe skim the rest.
