I really like this book Christine Feehan is one of my favorite authors. I enjoyed this book.

4 out of 5 stars The De La Cruz's brothers never look so tempting until now.......2007-10-08

I waited impatiently for this book but ironically I forgot about it for some time until it was giving to me as an early gift and once more, I was not disappointed. I have been a fan of Christine Feehan from the first Carpathian novel and own most of her novels. I for one was not disappointed and establish this book a great addition on my shelf. In here we have our hero on the verge of becoming a vampire; Manolito De La Cruz is called back to his Carpathian homeland and unexpectedly finds his destined life mate, MaryAnne Delaney, who has no idea of the lengths that Manolito will go through to keep his mate.

Well after reading this I found the characters to be strong, absorbing, and very hard to ignore in different ways. I did wish, however, for more of a continuance of the story from the "Celebration". Like what happened to Manolito from the time he was stabbed till he woke to early in the rainforest? How did he manage to convince Mary Ann to take a journey with people she didn't know? What exactly did Gregori do to bring Manolito back - and (while I understand the concept) what exactly did he do during his journey to the tree of life to retrieve Manolito's spirit. Since this spirit journey has great deal to do with the actual story line, I wish that it had been better explained. I enjoyed meeting Vlad and his life mate in the shadow world, but wondered why Ivory wasn't there with them. Is this another story? Is she really dead? Enquiring minds want to know or am I asking too much.

I liked meeting some of the new old ones for pretty much the first time. There will be readers (dedicated fans really) that will be put off by Feehan's direction. And this story definitely threw in some new factors that hadn't been really mentioned in previous books. I'm sure if you loved her other books and actually pick this one up, you're going to love it. A must read for paranormal lovers and romance lovers alike. This book along with her other work makes you feel you're actually a character taking part in the story and not just reading it at a distant. This book draws you in completely and keeps you there and if you lucky it might even take you away. I wouldn't mind reading Zacharias' story next but here's hoping.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Job!.......2007-10-07

This is definitely one of my most favorite books in the Dark Series collection. I love the dynamics between Manolito and MaryAnn, the introduction of a new species, and the various story lines (potential indepedent novels). To be honest, I was not a fan of the books that focused on the De La Cruz family. However, this book has definitely opened my mind more to them and has me looking forward to stories involving the remaining De La Cruz brothers.

Christine did a fantastic job and, once again, proves why she is the queen of paranormal romance. :~) Excellent job Christine...thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Atmospheric and sexually charged dark fantasy. .......2007-10-06

Dark Possession is an unabridged audiobook about the sensual bond between Carpathian near-vampire Manolito De La Cruz and his human destined lifemate, MaryAnn Delaney. When MaryAnn, a counselor for battered women, dares to venture into South America to offer guidance to a brutalized young woman, she walks unaware into a remorseless trap - Manolito waits to ensnare her with seductive, predatory power. Scenes of explicit adult content are present in this atmospheric and sexually charged dark fantasy. 12 CDs, approximately 13 hours.

"Literary critics make natural detectives," says Maud Bailey, heroine of a mystery where the clues lurk in university libraries, old letters, and dusty journals. Together with Roland Michell, a fellow academic and accidental sleuth, Maud discovers a love affair between the two Victorian writers the pair has dedicated their lives to studying: Randolph Ash, a literary great long assumed to be a devoted and faithful husband, and Christabel La Motte, a lesser-known "fairy poetess" and chaste spinster. At first, Roland and Maud's discovery threatens only to alter the direction of their research, but as they unearth the truth about the long-forgotten romance, their involvement becomes increasingly urgent and personal. Desperately concealing their purpose from competing researchers, they embark on a journey that pulls each of them from solitude and loneliness, challenges the most basic assumptions they hold about themselves, and uncovers their unique entitlement to the secret of Ash and La Motte's passion.

Winner of the 1990 Booker Prize--the U.K.'s highest literary award--Possession is a gripping and compulsively readable novel. A.S. Byatt exquisitely renders a setting rich in detail and texture. Her lush imagery weaves together the dual worlds that appear throughout the novel--the worlds of the mind and the senses, of male and female, of darkness and light, of truth and imagination--into an enchanted and unforgettable tale of love and intrigue. --Lisa Whipple

Book Description

An exhilarating novel of wit and romance, an intellectual mystery, and a triumphant love story. This tale of a pair of young scholars researching the lives of two Victorian poets became a huge bookseller favorite, and then on to national bestellerdom.

1 out of 5 stars I tried but I couldnt read it.......2007-08-27

I really tried. I came here to Amazon to see if I was the only one who struggled with this book. I wasn't. The effort finally became too much and I am giving up after reading about a third of this book. Life is too short

5 out of 5 stars Provocative.......2007-08-11

I found the weaving together of different styles in this book delightful and utterly satisfying. I'm the sort of person who often has two or three books going, who needs a regular poetry fix, who reads literary criticism with the proverbial grain of salt. If you take "LITERATURE" super-seriously, you probably won't like the book, because, well, you'll get made fun of. But if you are willing to enter a story with childlike belief and follow the author down unexpected side roads, if you enjoy observing a person's creative work for what it reveals about their character, well, this book supplies all of that. The fact that it has provoked such passionately opposite reviews is, to me, simply an indication that it has substance.

1 out of 5 stars Arrogant and Boring.......2007-06-22

I've read a few short stories by Ms. Byatt and found them all to be intriguing, thus, I had high hopes that this book would be interesting and unique - an intelligent, romantic novel perhaps. I was wrong, so wrong. The first third of the book moved quite slowly. The reader gets introduced to two literary scholars one (a man) who studies a famous male Victorian poet and the other (a woman) who studies a famous female Victorian poet. I didn't like either scholar. The central one-third of the book is dedicated to 'uncovering' lost love letters that the poets wrote to each other. The letters are boring, the poetry is bad, the thoughts about religious agnosticism are anachronistic. Now, two-thirds of the way through the book, I have decided that I don't like the Victorian poets either and couldn't care less if they loved each other or committed mass murder. The last third of the book brings the reader back to the present with our literary scholars dealing with academic politics, a budding romance and growing academic reputations based on finding the lost letters of the Victorian poets.

I didn't like the book because there was no humor or humility in any of the characters. The atmosphere of the book was very chilly. No one is ever warm or comfortable or happy. I hated this book. I would have been better off reading a sappy romance with stilted writing.

4 out of 5 stars A British epic.......2007-06-12

This is British literature at its height. A love story within a love story, Possession takes the reader through the characters' intimate obsessions with themselves, each other, and their work. And like most British novels, much of the action of this book takes place within rather than externally. What makes Possession a "Classic" (as the Booker Prize attests to) is the way the author blends the voices of the main characters through direct narrative, diaries, epic poems, and various other writings woven throughout the book. The mixture of letters between characters, love poems spanning centuries, journal entries, travel logs, and mythical allusions on which the story is built is more impressive here than in any other work I've read. For the literary minded, this book stands out among others.

5 out of 5 stars For People Who Love Literature.......2007-01-06

This is one of the best books I have read. It combines poetry, romance, and a detective story--what more could you ask for? While the subject is academic, the prose is lively and engaging and you can't wait to see what will happen next. It's like a literary "Da Vinci Code" without the continuous cheesy escapes. If you are looking for a "romance novel," then this isn't for you. If you seek a thought-provoking work that will move you, then pick this up.

Book Description

My father always said fear was a weakness. Well, that's easy to say when you don't have to worry about vampire slayers or holy water. I hate fear, but undead life goes on. In the two months since I was attacked in the hospital morgue and turned into a vampire, I've killed my evil sire, Cyrus, fallen in love with my new sire, Nathan, and have even gotten used to drinking blood. Just when things are finally returning to normal--as normal as they can be when sunlight can kill you--Nathan becomes possessed. And then he slaughters an innocent human.

Now it's my job to find Nathan before the Voluntary Vampire Extinction Movement does, because they're just waiting for an excuse to terminate him--and anyone foolish enough to help him. But it gets worse. It turns out that Nathan's been possessed by one of the most powerful and wicked vampires alive--the Soul Eater. And who knows what vile plan he's concocted?

With the Soul Eater and my possessed sire on the loose, I have a lot to fear. Including being killed. Again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow! And now for something completely different...........2007-09-23

The Possession, unlike its predecessor is a character study and it is very well done. Back again from The Turning (Blood Ties, Book 1) are Carrie, Nathan, Cyrus (yes, Cyrus) and Max. There have been a lot of complaints from other reviewers about the shift between Points of View in the book, but the view used here for Cyrus and Max allowed the author, Jennifer Armintrout, put us into their heads. Instead of getting just what the characters perceive about themselves, we really get to understand them in a way that Carrie's first person treatment doesn't allow.

The most appealing thread of the story follows Cyrus' personal transformation after his resurrection. He's human now and is initially ready to fall back into the evil and depravity that ruled his undead existence. From the previous book, we saw that along with his power, Cyrus had a vulnerability and neediness that made a somewhat sympathetic character despite the fact that he shouldn't have been at all likeable. The author puts us into Cyrus' head and exposes the thoughts that allow us to intimately view his journey toward recapturing his long lost humanity. We are made to understand the loss and seeking of love and approval that warped Cyrus in his previous life. We are privy to the beginning of his redemption because as he finally develops the ability to love, he finally gains the loves he has always sought.

A commonality between threads and characters in the Possession is the profound loss that most of them have experienced. They are all damaged and needy, looking for someone to fill the void of loneliness within them. None of them are healed here and even as Cyrus, Max and Carrie seem to have found the love that will heal them, it is stolen from them.

While the Possession carries the characters forward, it doesn't really move forward the background story. There is less of the scenes, just a few flash backs. that made the the Turning almost a horror story and only a few intimate scenes, some of which have nothing to do with love, so it is still not a romance. The Possession really just makes us truly understand the players and sets the stage for what it to come in the next book. I am anxious to read Ashes to Ashes (Blood Ties, Book 3)and see where Armintrout will take us next, for as different as the Possession was from the Turning, I just can't imagine what she has planned for Ashes to Ashes.

4 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-08-22

Wish I had started with the first book, but the 2nd explains everything pretty well. I didn't like the ending, but now that I know there is a book 3 I can't wait to get it!

5 out of 5 stars A series that actually sticks to the same characters.......2007-07-20

I agree with the people here who've said that this book felt a little disorganized. In the precious Blood Ties novel, everything was written from Carrie's point of view in first person style. Though most of this book is also like that, the focus switches from Carrie to Max to Cyrus, and the later two points of view are written in a third person limited format, even when Carrie is there. The constant camera changes so to speak did annoy me.

However the story itself was still very well written. Usually a romance novel series, deals with a common world but each book focuses on a different couple in that world (ie Christine Feehan's Dar series). I feel like in books like that, we never really get to know the characters. Luckily Jennifer Armintrout not only expands the world she created in "The Turning" but also sticks with the same main cast plus a few new faces. Again I have to agree with everyone here who said that surprisingly Cyrus was the best part of this particular part of the series. He went through more character development than anyone else, though it was also good to see that his darker persona also surfaced once in a while.

So while it didn't have the best organization, I still think it's one of the best paranormal books out there. Just picked up "Ashes to Ashes" and can't wait to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Why I love this book!.......2007-06-27

I love this book because you don't have any warm, fuzzy feelings when it's finished. In a world of romance writers who end everything with vampires having children, or marrying some human - it's absolutely refreshing to read a novel that doesn't have everything awash in white at the end. Congrats, Jennifer! You've definitely set yourself apart from the rest. I know that I, personally, stopped reading Sherrilyn Kenyon because you just blow her out of the water!

4 out of 5 stars More Risks From Armintrout!.......2007-05-24

In The Possession - Armintrout is back taking risks again, something I admire so very much.

This time, Carrie is with Nathan, her new sire and Cyrus is dead. Only wait, he's not and Nathan is possessed and Carrie has to work with assasins to find Nathan before he's killed.

There's a lot of external action going on, but again, the focus is the internal world of the characters. Carrie's struggle to figure out where her place is with a man she loves but she knows can't let go of another woman and her old tie to Cyrus. There are some characters from The Turning who come back and Armintrout fleshes out like Max (who I hope gets more page time next book!)

Cyrus' new humanity and his understanding of his actions as a vampire - a seriously messed up, evil dude with major daddy issues - is for me, one of the high points of the story.

None of the characters are perfect. Carrie is a messed up woman but she should be. She was murdered and turned in the first book, assaulted, kidnapped and mentally messed with as well. It all continues here but she struggles with caring for a man who cannot let go of his love of a woman long dead. How can you compete with that? And yet, she would die for him and not just because of the blood tie. But Cyrus is back and she's conflicted. She makes big mistakes with everyone.

I like, so very much, characters who aren't perfect. It takes a lot to write morally gray people even though most humans are that way. There is much good about Carrie, but she betrays people too.

Anyway, these books are not romances. There are romantic elements but they are dark, moody books without an HEA. I think Armintrout has created a really fascinating world and I will definitely pick up Ashes to Ashes when it comes out later this year.

This book is *different* than The Turning. It's difficult to compare them but I will say one minor thing that yanked me out of the story over and over was the shift between Carrie's first person POV and the third person POV of Cyrus and Max. I'm very laid back about POV issues but I will say up front I don't think it worked. The shifts were extremely confusing and because first is so intimate, you really felt the distance from Carrie's character when you were in Max's head or Cyrus', etc. IMO, it was a risky move, bold even, but the book would have been served better in all third if Carrie was off scene so much (which she is).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Ok Book Overall.......2007-08-20

Ok I don't normally write reviews, but I am a big fan of Murphy. But even though, I thought this book was good, it wasn't the best. The first book was way better. The first one had you holding on in excitement the entire time you read the book. This one seems to take too long to get to the point. The good stuff doesn't really happen until the last few chapters. I do however like that there are a few surprises concerning who the bad guy is. And what really happend to Ms. Tucker. But like I said you don't explore any of this till the end. So you will have to stay awake to get through the beginning/middle part of the book the best way you can without getting bored with it. Oh and you do learn more about her past too which was interesting. But I also agree with one of the other reviews about her crying all the time because she has powers and have to save the world. I mean really It's time to get with the program, come to terms about the whole shamanic destiny thing and move on. So all and all, I give this book 4 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars A Little Obvious.......2007-07-08

It's an okay read, but not spectacular. It seemed to rely heavily on Joanne not noticing things that she really probably should have--specially considering that she's a cop and been walking the beat. Surely when Faye pops out of nowhere, Joanne should have been at least suspicious and certainly very cautious before jumping in all the way. When Faye started talking about bringing over a powerful god (or whatever he was) to "fix" things, that should have raised all kinds alarm bells. Never once did Joanne even bother to ask her teacher anything about the god other than to go see him. Joanne just seemed to walk through the book without really actually thinking about anything.

4 out of 5 stars Sequel weakness?.......2007-05-15

Worth reading, but definitely weaker than the first book in the series, Urban Shaman. Hopefully, the next installment in the series will be tighter.

C. E. Murphy is on the right track (for me, anyway) with this series. I doesn't go off on interminable sidelines dealing with the heroine's romantic entanglements. Instead, it is focused on her self discovery and growth, and on the problem/mystery to be dealt with.

5 out of 5 stars Snakes and Raptors.......2007-04-28

It has to be perplexing to want to be a car mechanic and find yourself a cop on the beat instead. But for Joanne Walker this was only the beginning. Now she has discovered she is destined to be a shaman and that doesn't sit well with her at all. After surviving being fatally stabbed while saving the world in the previous volume - Urban Shaman - Joanne deserves a rest. But what she gets is a body in the Gym shower. When Joanne slips into the Dead Zone to find out how the young woman died she finds herself out of her depth and in deep trouble. A spirit that shouldn't have noticed her has, and thus begins another series of events where, kicking and screaming, Joanne must save the world once again.

Joanne investigates the death on her own and finds her path keeps criss-crossing that of a coven of witches who apparently need her help. The dead woman played an important role in the covens plans and Joanne would be the perfect replacement. All she has to is help with the reincarnation of and ancient wizard who is also intent on saving the world. Or maybe he isn't. Joanne must puzzle out the answers to this question and many others if she is to drag Seattle back from the edge of disaster, and, incidentally, get her head together about her spiritual powers.

I find I like this series more than I ever expected. There's no lack of books in the occult suspense/romance genre and it's always refreshing to read a book with a strong female lead that doesn't keep trying to commit suicide or get tangled up in kinky sex. C. E. Murphy is a strong writer, and her characters are interesting and believable. Joanne is a sassy, uppity lady with a good share of intelligence dealing with a very complicated reality. You can't help but like her, or her friend Gary the cab driver, or Captain Morrison, her boss and foremost critic. The story, with Joanne as narrator, moves well, and has many flashes of enjoyable sarcasm. Despite being the second volume, I think Thunderbird Falls can be read on its own - but you will want to read Urban Shaman anyway, so get both.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not as Good.......2007-04-07

Unlikely shaman Joann Walker, Gary, and the Seattle police force return in this second installment after Urban Shaman. Finally facing the facts that all of her magic useage has effected the weather patterns of Seattle, Joann has little idea what to do about it. She has steadfastly tried to turn her back on magic for months. But a near brush with death on the cosmic level and the disappearance of her spirit guide Coyote have lead her to realise she needs a teacher.

Complicating her lessons is the coven she's recently become involved with. She happened to discover one of their members freshly deceased and is taking her place in order to solve the murder. It seems the covens purposes coincide with her own as they plan to bring back a 3,000 year old spirit to right the wrongness in Seattle's weather. But is everything on the up & up?

The romantic tension ratchets up a little bit more in this book. But who will Joann end up embracing? Morrison, Thor the mechanic, or even fatherly but mischievious Gary?

Some of what turns out to be pertinent detail in this book is intruduced to us very vaguely and briefly (uhuhm...cough...the Thunderbird...)while the rest of it seems to drag a bit in the middle. And I found the sacrifice bit cliched and felt that every reader would probably see it coming. But it was an entertaining book and I'm still looking forward to Coyote's reappearance in Coyote Dreams, the next book in the Walker Papers. Why they've retitled the series the Walker Papers I can only guess. And that guess would be, to make it sound more like the Dresden Files, another extremely popular paranormal series, but what do I know?

Determined to save the girl from certain death, Jarrk fights for the right to claim her - only to be shamed in front of his people by the hostile, arrogant little human. Thus ensues a battle of wills between the two - a struggle born of pride, prejudice and misconception - fired by a dangerous, unwanted attraction that cannot be denied. 5 out of 5 stars You will prize Prized Possession.......2007-01-18

PRIZED POSSESSION contains two unique erotic fantasies by a very gifted writer.

GRYFFIN STRAIN: HIS FEMALE. On the run from the soldiers of her own land, human Chiarra braves the maelstrom winds to cross the chasm. Instead of finding safety, she is captured by a large golden Gryffin named Grat. But Grat's possession of Chiarra is immediately, and successfully, challenged by Jarrk and Chiarra must now join his pit until it is safe to once again face the maelstrom and head north.

The non-human Gryffins are magnificent creatures, but are considered little better than talking animals by the humans. Chiarra has heard of Gryffins mating with humans, but Jarrk offers her only his protection while she waits for the maelstrom winds to abate enough to risk another crossing. Chiarra works alongside the other females in Jarrk's pit, observing and learning about the Gryffins and their society. And almost from the outset, she discovers feelings of respect and lust for Jarrk--feelings that are clearly reciprocated.

Although Jarrk has provided Chiarra with sanctuary, she still faces a multitude of dangers, including dragons that roam the adjoining forest, the malevolent Grat who wants Chiarra as his mate, and the soldiers who seek to punish Chiarra for her unforgivable crime. Even as they begin to explore their passion for one another, Jarrk and Chiarra are faced with the brutal realities that threaten to separate them forever.

Both the title of this book, Prized Possession, and the title of this story are a little misleading. To me, they hint of subjugation and bondage. In actuality, Jarrk and Chiarra both learn to overcome their initial misconceptions and form a deep respect and love for each other. (Not to worry--there are still some hot sex scenes.)

I liked the fact that Ms. Hayes opened this story without any set-up or explanations. Readers are dropped into the middle of the action and only bit by bit learn about this strange, fascinating world and Jarrk's and Chiarra's respective pasts. Therefore, each new piece of information becomes a treat, another piece of the puzzle which isn't fully revealed until the end. Despite the satisfying conclusion, I think there are still some mysteries to be explored and I'm hoping there will be more Gryffin stories that do just that.

KINGDOM OF KHAL: REDEEMING DAVIK. During the war against the Northern Rebels, two Southern Princes capture and enslave the mysterious and alluring Petra. Warrik is a huge man, a formidable warrior, and the Heir to Southern Khal. His loyal brother Davik is his master strategist and constant companion--in everything. The brothers' infatuation with their sexual plaything quickly grows to the point that it is less clear who is really being enslaved. In addition, small tensions develop between the brothers and, for the first time in his life, Davik finds himself reluctant to share a woman with Warrik.

Once again, Ms. Hayes has readers stepping directly into a world with a complex military and social history that is inhabited by people with equally complex histories and motivations. This story also uses gradual reveals, and contains twist after twist until the final surprising conclusion.

Kingdom of Khal: Redeeming Davik was a difficult and disturbing story. I frequently had to put it down and just walk away. Even in a world full of brutality and violence, Petra's gut-clenching ordeals stand out. Imprisoned at a young age, Petra has already endured flogging, beatings, constant restraint, rape (and coerced sex), subjugation, emotional loss, and the deaths of loved ones during her short life. Despite these horrors, Petra is not an object of pity. Instead, she is a strong, ambitious woman with a soft heart but a core of steel--a woman who has a master plan and is determined to see it to its fulfillment.

Ms. Hayes has created a rich, believable, and strangely compelling world that is not for the faint of heart. All of the characters, even the secondary characters, were three-dimensional and realistically full of both human strengths and fallibilities. I may not have always liked this world or the characters, but I was always mesmerized by them--mesmerized enough to want to read the followup to this story, DYE'S KINGDOM--WANTING IT FOREVER.

Although they may not be for everyone, Ms. Hayes's stories are unique, well-written, interesting, and, yes, challenging. I'm giving PRIZED POSSESSION a 5-star recommendation.

Two wonderful romance novels from beginning to end. Brilliant characters and a plot to go along with all that steamy romance; Madison does it in perfect harmony. With exciting adventure and sizzling sex, Ms. Hayes keeps your sexual desire wanting more!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good book.......2005-11-28

Two books in one. The first story is a little odd but the second story actually has a little bit of a plot to it!! Kind of surprising for this type. Of course the majority of both stories is the sex but that's what all these books are about anyway.

There's no denying the Angelini magic that has chosen them as her mates, and once claimed, they will crave her as desperately as she will crave them. 5 out of 5 stars A thrilling ride from start to finish.......2006-04-22

Ms. Strong first introduces readers to Brann and Rafael in Skye's Trail, the first book of her Angelini series, and from the start, these two characters intrigued me. A man forced by circumstance to be the companion of a very old and ancient vampire and the woman who would tie these two men together - I couldn't wait. And Syndelle's Possession proved to be every bit the exciting and romantic read I expected.

Picking up on the trail started in the first book of a serial killer and taking place in the same vampire community, we learn Syndelle is so much more than we first learn. I won't reveal her secrets here, but within the pages of this book the reader will be taken on an extraordinary journey that fulfills, and exceeds, every expectation.

I found Syndelle a strong character, ready to fight against those who wish to coddle her for the secret she holds. Rafael grows so much in this book, his transformation takes him from a hunky side kick to the true hero of the piece. And Brann gets more than he expects in this paring, forcing even an ancient vampire to learn new tricks. The book is suspenseful as the characters race against time to save those they care about, and the love scenes are hot, hot, hot! Written in sensual and erotic detail, the m?nage scenes, some of which do include m/m interaction, are a lavish tapestry that adds depth and emotion to this already charged tale.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2007-05-30

This is a fresh approach for the HP books I have read, in that the hero and heroine are already dating, have been for several months and the relationship seems to be solid and loving. They enjoy each others company and go through their relationship as any caring couple would. Of course there is the jealous ex or want-a-be girlfriend and lack of communication delays the process.

I actually delayed purchasing this book because I wasn't impressed with the discription. I'm happy I did buy it because it's so much better then described and very much worth the price. I enjoyed reading this book

4 out of 5 stars Too much sex! I can't believe I said that........2007-04-11

Helen Bianchin is one of my "auto buy" authors for Harlequin Presents. I enjoyed this story over all, but there were so many love scenes that I wanted them to hurry up so I could get to the story. I think there was more sex in this book than an Ellora's Cave book!
I love Bianchin books. There is always much angst in the journey to "happily ever after" in her books and her writing style, that when you finally get to the end you breath a sigh of relief.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Couple.......2007-03-22

This is not one of Ms. Bianchin's best but it is not bad either. If she would only resist including the psycho wannabe girlfriend of the hero I would have given this one 4 stars.
Why, why, why, can't I be making the big bucks as a Harlequin editor while at the same time fighting for truth, justice and better quality romance novels? Life just ain't fair sometimes.
Anyhow, back to the real world: Zac and Lisane are both lawyers and happily involved from the first page of this book. Happily, there is no blackmail involved in their relationship: stay with me or I'll ruin you, your family or sue for custody of our child whom you'll never see again.
She would like a commitment from Zac, but he's happy with the status quo; we're all familiar with that particular scenario :) Yet she won't make the first move by letting him know she wants more, believes she loves him or they should see other people if he's NOT going to commit since she doesn't want him to break her heart.
She visits her sister who is getting married and runs into her old boyfriend, her future brother-in-law's brother. He would like her back, but she loves Zac not him. In fact, that's why she moved away from her sister, to put distance between her and the ex-boyfriend who didn't want to remain an ex.
She soon realizes she's pregnant and doesn't know how to tell Zac. Finally she does, he insists they marry and she doesn't want to marry someone who only wants to marry her because they have a child on the way. They naturally resolve this, but happily Ms. Bianchin makes it relatively painless and angst-free for the couple as well as her readers.
Not that there's no drama, but there's a fine line between drama and melodrama. This is a good, strong couple and you can feel their love for one another even if they do not label it as such. Interesting story. I like her sister's gumption in this tale. And at least the psycho babe who's trolling for Zac only makes a couple of catty remarks in this book. She doesn't shove our heroine, put out a contract on her or try to implicate her in some nefarious plot.
But if you can only buy one of these Harlequin Presents this month, I'd go for Lynne Graham's "The Italian's Inexperienced Mistress." If you have the extra bucks, by all means buy this one as well.

Book Description

A Common Lady
For years she had thought he was dead. Yet when Addis de Valence strode into Moira Falkner's cottage, there was no mistaking the sharp planes of his face, and the scar she herself had helped to heal. The young squire who had once been her hero was now her lord, a hardened man who returned to claim the son she had raised as her own. But Moira couldn't deny that Addis roused a passion she never thought to feel--and a perilous hope for a future that could never be....

An Uncommon Love
Addis returned from the Crusades to find his lands usurped by his stepbrother, and his country on the brink of rebellion. Determined to reclaim his birthright, Addis could not afford to be distracted by a woman--even one as tempting as Moira. Yet the only living part of his contented past lay in Moira--and his desire for her was more dangerous than his deadly battles with the king's men. By law, Moira belonged to him...but possessing her heart might be far more difficult.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Heart-wrenching love story.......2007-05-19

Madeline Hunter's writing always seems to be a notch above others', and BY POSSESSION is no exception. Having read and loved THE RULES OF SEDUCTION before (the only "romance" novel I've given 5 stars thus far), I was right at home with Hunter's medieval-era BY POSSESSION. I'm amazed at how realistic and believable Madeline Hunter's heroes are, and Addis de Valence is very compelling, not the sort of "alpha" romance heroes that are more pining than anything else. Though I found myself thoroughly captivated by BY POSSESSION, I thought the plotting and settings took a firm backseat to BY POSSESSION's heart-wrenching love story. The characterizations of our leading pair Moira and Addis are exceptional (Moira especially), but the settings and plotting are a bit weaker than what I'm used to from THE RULES OF SEDUCTION.

BY POSSESSION chronicles the heart-wrenching tale of a serf-woman's impossible love for a lord, giving all she has and expecting nothing in return. Deservedly, this tale belongs to Moira Falkner, serf-born daughter of an acknowledged prostitute. Moira is servant to Claire, the lady betrothed and later married to the handsome Addis de Valence, lord of Barrowburgh. Moira is so forgettable, so ordinary, Addis dubs her Claire's Shadow when Moira is young. Moira however fosters a deep-seeded and hidden love for Addis, and though many openly ridicule Moira because of her mother's dubious position, Addis is kind to Moira when she's young. Moira returns that kindness with such a profound love that blew me away, Moira gives everything she has, her soul, her heart, to Addis without ever expecting anything in return.

In order to escape a disastrous marriage to Claire, Addis leaves on a crusade in the Baltic, where he's captured and held in slavery for 6 years. Upon his return, he finds himself a foreigner in his homeland where everything has changed. Addis' stepbrother usurps Addis' father and now holds Addis' family's stronghold, Barrowburgh. Addis' father is dead, his wife is dead and he discovers he actually has a son, the heir to Barrowburgh. Only Moira remains as a symbol from his tortured past, having cared for Addis' heir and keeping him hidden and safe from Addis' stepbrother.

Even though Moira is no longer bondwoman, Addis refuses to give her up, and tenaciously grasps onto that symbol from his past, refuting her testimony that she was freed. After a few escape attempts, Moira unwittingly finds herself back in Addis' arms and desperately tries to deny her childhood love for Addis each escape attempt. She doesn't want to repeat her mother's rather notorious and dubious position as a lord's mistress even though both loved each other and were true to each other.

As a serf-born girl, Moira knows she has no real future with the rightful Lord of Borrowburgh, and refuses to accept him as his mistress like her mother accepted her lord. Moira desires a home of her own, and she will obstinately accept nothing less. She's prideful, and she holds her honor and respect in society above else, even trying to suppress a deep-rooted love for Addis.

The remainder of the story tells a heart-wrenching tale of Moira's love that can never be, and the unspeakable peace and love Addis finds with Moira. Addis will only take a willing Moira, and honors Moira so much that he won't even use seduction as a means of her acceptance. Instead, Addis is content finding a peace by just being with and around Moira. Addis finds he is only whole with Moira, and can find no peace elsewhere.

Moira's impassioned love for Addis knows no bounds, she gives so freely without any strings attached, without any expectation, that I was blown away. It was a heart-wrenching love because she knows she can never truly be with a Lord, and everything she gives to Addis is that much more profound, that much more impassioned, that much more gut-wrenching.

Again, an excellent tale and I look forward to reading other medieval-era books by Madeline Hunter.

4 out of 5 stars An uncommon love in a time of turmoil...........2006-08-11

By Possession tells the story of an umcommon love between Moira Faulkner who is a serf-born bond woman and Addis de Valence, a crusader knight and Lord of Barrowburgh. After supposedly being dead for 8 years, Addis reappears in Moiras life and everything gets turned upside down. The storyline has everything from battles and wars, and exiled king, enslavement, a childs birth secret, a treacherous brother and wife, to traitors who will try to corrupt Moira and Addis. All the while still keeping the love and passion between them. Nothing is missing from this exhilarating read. The only tiny flay is that I thought the book ended abrubtly but it still has a great ending nonetheless. Overall, By Possession is a freat historical romance that I would recomment for all romance lovers. I definetly give this book 4 1/2 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Passionate and bittersweet love story.......2006-07-27

Moira is a beautiful, proud and courageous serf-woman who has loved only one man since she was twelve. Until he showed up on her doorstep to claim the son she had raised, she believed that man was dead. Her pride and love for Addis will constantly war within her, because she knows he can never marry her. The only role Moira can play in his life will be as a mistress, until he tires of her.

Moira saw what her mother had to endure as a mistress to another nobleman and swore that she would never allow it to happen to her. But now her oath will be sorely tested as she fights to walk away from the love of her life.

For eight years, Addis de Valence was a captured slave in the Baltic lands until his lover, the daughter of a priest, helped him escape. He returns home to find that his father, wife and most of whom he loved are dead, his stepbrother has taken over his father's estate and he has a son he didn't know existed. Now he has to fight to regain all that he has lost. But in his quest, Addis will discover a love that will mean more to him than his life; a love in a woman who is not his equal in the eyes of society.

This is perhaps one of the best love stories I've ever read. Madeline Hunter's gift for weaving an enthralling and passionate story is astounding. Her characters easily come alive with her words. Their flaws, insecurities, longings, and pain flows out of each page as you are seduced into the intriguing world she has created for her characters. The storyline is complex and bloated with intrigue and heartbreak. You'll be enthralled to the last page.

2 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2006-07-26

I must say that from the reviews on here I expected to find a greatly engrossing and enthralling read, instead this book just drags on and gets tedious and boring. The storyline is lacking and the characters are not likable.

First Addis is a jerk to Moira. She has earned her freedom fair and square and yet he won't let her go, until she made it clear that she would never agree to become his mistress.

Second Addis for some reason which wasn't clear to me while reading this book, was sort of forced into getting married to a 14 year old girl. And yet Addis has no plans whatsoever to even try to make his marriage work to this innocent girl who is much more of a victim than he ever was. His marriage vows mean nothing to him. He is so busy with his lust for Moira, and yes I call it lust because it most certainly was not love when he was willing to so easily turn her into his mistress (regardless of the consequences she would suffer from it), and regardless of how that would hurt his future wife. I just can't respect such a selfish jerk.

I'll give him credit though, that when Moira made it clear that she will not become his mistress, he let her go and he gave her the house, which she turned into an inn.

Third, Moira herself makes it clear that she will not be his mistress and yet continues to engage in an illicit affair with him, although he is betrothed. And she is not concerned about getting pregnant, because she sees no problem in raising a child alone now that she owns an inn. It doesn't matter that the child would be a [...] child, in that time and setting...right...

Not a keeper

5 out of 5 stars One of the best!.......2006-06-05

This was one of the best romances I have had the pleasure of reading. The characters were stubborn, full of pride, and perfectly aware they must be together. Best part of this book; the author took time to give a background on both Addis & Moira, which made you feel you knew them.Yet it was entertwined so well with the ongoing story that there was never a dull moment. Favorite line-"I've loved you since I was twelve." One of my all time favorites. Thank you Ms. Hunter!

Book Description

Carrie Fitzgerald is the luckiest girl: She is the only sophomore on the varsity basketball team, she always had the lead in the school play, and she has the cutest boyfriend in school. Carrie Fitzgerald is also the most superstitious girl: She attributes all of her good luck to a Moroccan T-shirt that her father sent her from one of his distant jaunts around the world. When her mother accidentally donates Carrie's lucky T to Help India and her good luck starts running out, Carrie does what any logical girl would do -- she travels halfway around the world to get it back. But as she scours a foreign land for her luck, she finds a lot more than she ever expected. She's going to need more than luck to find her way back home again.

i didnt not at all like this book! i felt that this girl is WAY TOO spoiled and it made me mad how if she didnt get her way she would turn into the PRISSY girl who was "too good" for work. Her attitude wasnt exactly the greatest. All she wanted was her lucky t. and if she didnt get it she would cry. She acted like she was better than everyone. and i just didnt like it. UGH!

Have you ever cleaned your room/closet and decided to donate your excess clothes to charity? Maybe it was a mother-ordered mandate to get rid of the clutter? Whatever the reason or inspiration, did you ever give away something you didn't really mean to give? What would you do to get it back?

Carrie's mother does just that. She gives Carrie's favorite T-shirt to the Help India foundation. Unfortunately, the T-shirt is not just a T-shirt. It was given to Carrie by her father, and she superstitiously believes it is the reason for every success in her young life. She must get it back.

Since the T-shirt is traveling to India, Carrie makes arrangements to travel there, too. Carrie arrives at the Help India headquarters to find herself bunking with several roommates in a hostel. The roommates are horrible, and India is nothing like she expected. She is assigned to the group building homes in Calcutta. Needless to say, Carrie seriously lacks building trade skills. From dropping a hammer on her flip-flop-exposed big toe to dropping a boxful of nails in wet concrete, Carrie is not very popular at the building site.

Much to her relief, Carrie meets Dee, who tells her about his work at the Calcutta Children's Shelter. When she's offered a chance to start volunteering there, she decides anything is better than her current situation. Her work with children is the beginning of a new understanding for Carrie. Maybe the T-shirt isn't that important after all.

When I started LUCKY T, I was frustrated with the whining of main character Carrie. As the storyline began to unfold, though, it gained depth and purpose, and everything fell into place. Kate Brian gives readers a chance to watch the growth of Carrie and what her experience teaches her about exactly what things/people are important in life.

Very entertaining and fun romance appropriate for teens. Quick paced after an initial slow start. Once you get past the first 25 pages, the rest of the book is fantastic. I love the glimpses into India and how the heroine grows as a person when she looks outside of her normal comfortable life. Dee is a dream: handsome, nice, and smart. I wish there was more about Dee, would have liked more development of their relationship. The author is a great writer, she really knows how to take you to another place. I would read more of her books.
