Since the first edition of this landmark book was published in 1962, Everett Rogers's name has become "virtually synonymous with the study of diffusion of innovations," according to Choice. The second and third editions of Diffusion of Innovations became the standard textbook and reference on diffusion studies. Now, in the fourth edition, Rogers presents the culmination of more than thirty years of research that will set a new standard for analysis and inquiry.

The fourth edition is (1) a revision of the theoretical framework and the research evidence supporting this model of diffusion, and (2) a new intellectual venture, in that new concepts and new theoretical viewpoints are introduced. This edition differs from its predecessors in that it takes a much more critical stance in its review and synthesis of 5,000 diffusion publications. During the past thirty years or so, diffusion research has grown to be widely recognized, applied and admired, but it has also been subjected to both constructive and destructive criticism. This criticism is due in large part to the stereotyped and limited ways in which many diffusion scholars have defined the scope and method of their field of study. Rogers analyzes the limitations of previous diffusion studies, showing, for example, that the convergence model, by which participants create and share information to reach a mutual understanding, more accurately describes diffusion in most cases than the linear model.

Rogers provides an entirely new set of case examples, from the Balinese Water Temple to Nintendo videogames, that beautifully illustrate his expansive research, as well as a completely revised bibliography covering all relevant diffusion scholarship in the past decade. Most important, he discusses recent research and current topics, including social marketing, forecasting the rate of adoption, technology transfer, and more. Interesting.......2007-09-12

This book is fascinating. It discusses the spread of ideas and products through communities, how they spread and why. Rogers breaks down the process and describes different categories of people depending on when they take up the innovation. This book is very readable, and although written by an academic, not written in academese. It covers various domains of interest (agriculture, sociology, marketing) and has something for everyone.

The one thing I think Rogers has missed is subjective norm. Not only do people weigh the relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability and observability, but they also weigh up what they believe their personal network believes what they should do.

For instance, I will do something that someone important (to me)tells me to do, even if I personally find it silly, simply because I put enough weight and consideration into what I believe is their opinion.

Rogers gets close to that with the discussion of personal networks and adoption of innovations by organisations, but still misses the point. That is why this book only gets four stars, from me.

Very insightful. A must read for a variety of academic disciplines. I don't know that I've been in a professor's office at my university and not seen this book on the shelf!

Diffusion of Innovations--The scientific framework of lessons learned.......2007-06-12

As a physician who has had the pleasure to experience life-changing innovations in his medical career, the chance to read Dr Rogers book on Innovation has been a real delight. Technology has changed so much around us in the last half of the 20th century that we can scarcely describe what life was like before "the innovation".

To my friends who happen to be innovators, early adaptors, beta testers and entrepreneurs, I recommend the book to provide the scientific disicpline with its glossary, case reports, primary scientific citations and organization of innovation theory that ones needs if one is in an "innovation" field and wishes to communicate professionally.

To the casual reader who is fascinated by the world around him/her and wishes to explore innovation scientifically, then this should be considered the "primer".

There are several well written books on innovation but this is one of the most excellent piece of work on diffusion of innovation. Though if we look at history, research on the diffusion of innovations model began with the Bryce and Gross' (1943) investigation of the diffusion of hybrid seed corn among Iowa farmers. They explained how it came to attention and which of two channels (i.e., mass communication and interpersonal communication with peers) led farmers to adopt the new innovation.

But Rogers has further discussed the five characteristics of a technology acceptance - 1) relative advantage, the extent to which it offers improvements over available tools, 2) compatibility, its consistency with social practices and norms among its users, 3) complexity, its ease of use or learning, 4) trialability, the opportunity to try an innovation before committing to use it, 5) observability, the extent to which the technology's gains are clear to see.

Great practice.......2007-03-14

This book truly helped me prepare for the AAPC National exam. The book provides you with 2 different practice exams that are almost equivalent to the questions on the actual exam. Time is a factor when you are actually taking the exam. You are provided 5 hours for 150 questions, and although that sounds like alot of time, it really is not. As this book comes with a CD that times you while taking the practice tests, I feel that it helped me get a better feel of how much time is really required to complete the exam. I passed the exam that I took in Feb 07 and I honestly feel that this book contributed to my passing.

The book is very complete as information with many details that one would need refreshing every so often. Each chapter has a test, a very good test I can say. The downfall is the CD; there is no feed back to your answers, only the percentage you achieved. That may not be enough for someone who is trying to learn. We do learn from our mistakes, so no feed back, how would one know what did wrong?
The CD is the downfall for this book.

I bought three CCS review guides to prepare for the CCS exam. This one was NO help whatsoever. I had been studying with my other two books (AHIMA's and Thompson's) and picked this one up the weekend before the test. I liked that it had CCS-like exams to take on a CD. I was studying with a friend of mine so we both decided to take the pre-test. This was the day before we took the exam. I scored -103, yes negative 103 and she scored 30, meaning we both flunked. We were so discouraged. so threw that book aside and called it a day. The CD and the book gave us no hint as to what we did wrong with the test, what we needed to study further. No help whatsoever.
We both took the CCS the next day and passed with flying colors. If we had let this book discourage us we would not now be both CCS certified.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

This is the best book I have ever read about Chronic Fatigue. There is so much useful information, and step-by-step directions to heal yourself. He talks about which supplements and/or prescriptions are helpful, and the recommended doses. He also provides free information on his website, including some great lectures.

I bought my mother this book as she was frightened and depressed at what was happening to her. This book and armed with one other, she was able to take charge of her life, get her energy back, started exercising, and soon she had a new lease on life and is still working on it. This is an excellent book with a plethora of information on the diagnosis and treatment of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. The author presents a multitude of therapies for managing the multiple dysfunctions involved in these disorders, many of which were revolutionary at the time that the book was written.
It is for these reasons that I give the book a high rating.
That said, since the book was released, new information on how to treat the aforementioned disorders has emerged, as new insights into the causes of these have likewise been discovered. For instance, it is now thought by many experts that Lyme disease is a major cause of CFIDS/Fibromyalgia, as is a certain genetic defect.
Also, this book, as most others dealing with CFIDS, did not deal much with past emotional trauma and how this manifests in the body as physical illness. For anyone who suspects that this factor has played a role in the development of his/her CFIDS, finding information that deals with this aspect of healing is absolutely vital for recovery
Further, I am more of a believer in natural approaches to healing, and this book suggests pharmaceutical drugs when other therapies might be safer, more effective options.
In the end, however, it is an amazingly informative book with important and useful insights which will help any CFIDS/Fibromyalgia sufferer.

Dean Radin's book is an excellent work. Unfortunately, this is the second book I've bought over the last year that is printed on very cheap pulp-paper. Only, HaperOne has done something that the other publisher didn't do, and that is print a hardcover book containing cheap pulp-paper.

In the future, I will be looking to make sure that no book I buy is printed by HarperOne. I will not reward this nasty corporate trend with another dime.

This book is fantastic with anyone with an interest in anomalous phenomena such as psi, read it then read Entangled minds for the full picture. Even radins critics claim that there is some interesting evidence put forward in this book , I even heard a skeptic website review of the book reach the conclusion "in my opinion "The Conscious Universe" is an interesting book, whose subject area deserves closer inspection." if the skeptics received it moderatly well so will you.

I got no free shipping but I got percisely the information I needed from The Conscious Universe. The answer is that, yes, it appears that various forms of extended perception are authentic and are probably distributed among the general population like any other talent.

Get the Real Facts on ESP
There's no question about the reality of ESP for anyone who has ever experienced it. Just the other day, for example, as I was driving cross-country to give a seminar, a student came to mind. I hadn't heard from the person in a long time, and I found myself worrying and full of doubt. As these feelings seemed to erupt out of nowhere and had an obsessive quality about them, I suspected a subliminal telepathic influence. I watched as my obsessive worrying revealed certain themes. Acting as if these feelings were a message of distress from that person, I pulled over at a pay phone by the road and gave a call. The person answered the telephone and was surprised at who was calling. "I had just been thinking about you!" was the student's exclamation. I ventured a guess about the content of those thoughts. It was exactly as I suspected. Needless to say, the student was delighted, impressed, and touched.
Something is real if it makes a difference in your life, a wise philosopher woman once told me. I agree. ESP sure made a difference to that student and I. The fact that I reached out and touched that person at just the right moment made a difference in the way we experienced our relationship and work together.
Coincidence? Well, maybe, maybe not. I've heard many people, for example, tell a story similar to mine, only to exclaim, "It was creepy!" Then they shrug it off as "just a coincidence." When they say the C word, they do so with a sigh of relief. The coincidence defense is often used, I believe, to deny the intimate connection between minds, just like in another context someone might deny intimacy by saying "We're just friends!"
To destroy the plausible deniability of ESP, I recommend the book, The Conscious Universe: The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena (HarperSanFrancisco). The author, Dean Radin, Ph.D., is Director of the Consciousness Research Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His name appears often in my Psi Research column because of his wide ranging and innovative research and his book reflects his impressive scope and grasp of the field.
The major strength of the book, and what makes it stand out as a unique and important contribution, is his treatment of the technical details defining the evidence for ESP. People are confused by statistics, for example, and in the absence of a dramatic psychic phenomenon, like spoon bending, we can easily dismiss an ESP effect that is largely statistical in nature. Radin gives some good examples of statistical realities that are more familiar in our culture to help the reader better comprehend the nature of the evidence for ESP. To take one example, perhaps you've heard about the studies showing that aspirin can prevent heart attacks. A long term study by Harvard Medical School was in progress when the results were so dramatic, the investigators made the unusual move of going public before the study was completed. They felt that the information was so important, the public had to be informed because of the lives that could be saved. What is less known is that the strength of this effect, the change in your odds of getting a heart attack if you take aspirin, and the strength of the statistics backing up those odds, are weaker than the statistics that underlie the laboratory evidence for ESP! It's more likely, in other words, according to accepted mathematical canons of science, that ESP exists than it is that aspirin reduces heart attacks. Moreover, ESP has a stronger effect on laboratory data than aspirin has on medical data. If I may say so, ESP is stronger than aspirin!
If ESP is so strong, why doesn't it work in Las Vegas? Radin, strategically located in the gaming capital of America, is in position to give us some new information on this perennial question. The answer is, it does! He was able to obtain normally top secret information concerning casino payoffs. He presents graphs that show, with the visual vividness we usually associate with scientifically secure phenomena, that casino profits fluctuate with the strength of the earth's geomagnetic field. As other studies show, when geomagnetic field is weak, people show greater psychic ability, and the Las Vegas casinos are not exempt from this influence.
We are being affected psychically, and exerting psychic effects, according to the studies Radin presents, on a national, international and global scale. At the moment the verdict in the OJ trial was announced, when more people were glued to the boob tube than in any other moment in history, electronic random number generators in several laboratories registered an unprecedented lack of randomness. When minds are joined, it matters. Over a thirty year period, to give another example, on the afternoon of the outdoor graduation ceremonies at Princeton University, the weather was sunnier than normal, even when it was raining in nearby localities! Just a coincidence? Don't bet on it.

Understanding Connectedness in the Universe.......2007-03-24

I must confess that this book is written for people who are much smarter than I am. The author has gone into great detail and analyses of many situations of psychic phenomena. I am familiar with much of what he has written because this subject is interesting to me, and I watch television documentaries concerning this subject. Edgar Cayce and his readings are especially of interest.

I wanted the author to give me the answer to something that happened to me, but so far he has not done so. Last fall, I saw a locust on its back. I knew it did not have long to live so I walked by and started to go in my house. Then it was as though something hit me as I thought, "This might be his time to die but he does not have to die right now this minute. If I helped him to get over on his feet, he could live a while longer."

I picked up some plastic ties that are used to tie garbage bags together and touched the locust's feet with the ties. His tiny brain in that tiny body knew that help was coming to him from some place. He held on as I slowly turned my hand over, bringing him back to his feet. I slipped out the ties and said, "Okay, bud, you're on your own." I went into the house and forgot about him.

On the following day I was standing at my mailbox gathering my mail. I heard the buzz before I saw him. When I looked up, the locust was bombarding me. He came directly toward my hair, buzzing all the way. I shook him away from my hair, and then I thought, "I'll bet that this is the same locust I helped. He recognizes me and this is his way of saying 'Thank you.'"

I walked back to where I had seen the locust on his back and looked around the area. I could not find him anyplace. About two weeks later I saw a locust buzzing around my bushes, and I would imagine it was the same locust.

About the same time I noticed a yellow butterfly on the outside of my car window as I was driving into my garage. I thought, "If I shut the door, he will die because he cannot fly freely and will have no food." I reversed the car, drove outside the garage, tapped on the window causing him to fly away, and then drove back into the garage.

These are two occasions where I have had contact with the insect world where I felt that there was some sort of communication going on between us. I do not know if these two situations fit into Dr. Radin's book, but I bought his book hoping that there would be a section explaining this phenomena. I have not found any explanation so far, but I have not finished the book.

Does anybody who reads this have an answer? Are we connected in our universe?

Dear Reader,

If there were a chance that opening this book could set off a chain of events that would lead to Apocalypse, to the end of Life as we know it, would you be tempted? Finger poised uncertainly above the flashing red button? How about if the Apocalypse promised to result in a new age of enlightenment, a Heaven on Earth like never before?

Personally, I’ll take the security of my cozy life over a chance at nirvana. But status quo may no longer be an option, for any of us. This book will convince you that there is a nonnegligible chance that the year 2012 will be more tumultuous, catastrophic, and, quite possibly, revelatory, than any other year in human history.

Parts of this book are best read with a bowl of popcorn: looking into the jaws of a great white shark in search of the meaning of death; touring a picturesque Guatemalan town with Mayan shaman just weeks before it is utterly destroyed. Other sections go better with a tranquilizer, such as the impending eruption of the Yellowstone supervolcano, or the mass extinction headed our way—on the scale of the great collision that destroyed the dinosaurs and 70 percent of all other species, our best scientists contend that it’s now overdue. Nail-biters should beware the fact that the next peak in the sunspot cycle, due in 2012, is widely expected to set records for the number and intensity of solar storms pummeling the Earth with radiation and igniting natural calamities such as earthquakes, volcanoes, and Katrina-sized hurricanes. And that our entire solar system appears to be moving into a dangerous interstellar energy cloud.

Is it a coincidence that the burgeoning war between Christianity and Islam seems hell-bent for Armageddon? Or that numerous other religions, philosophies, and cultural traditions are signaling that the end is near, with 2012 emerging as the consensus target date? Waiting to Exhale.......2007-09-27

Something in the world has changed. We all know it. We all feel as though we are holding our breath. I have observed birds feeding in places where they've rarely been seen before. I have observed butterflies this year become increasingly aggressive. Bees in California are disappearing. Weather patterns are shifting. Governments seem to be spiraling downward in an attempt to control, control, control. So what's going on?

Lawrence E. Joseph takes us with him on his journey to discover the source of our unease. We travel with him through all the possible scenarios beginning with the Mayan prediction of world disaster in 2012. He doesn't go looking for the boogey-man in the closet. He looks to the scientific world for answers. The answers that he finds are not encouraging. Sunspots are active. Never mind the Celebrity Disaster of the Year--global warming, the entire universe may be heating up. Then there is my personal favorite, the reversal of the poles.

Joseph does not overlook mankind's potential contribution to the disaster scenario either. He zeros in on the heart of prophecy, mysticism and madness. He looks at religion.

It is the Jewish prophecy that brings with it the greatest potential for self-fulfillment and the greatest potential for the destruction of mankind. The U.S. government seems to be a willing accomplice in bringing Rabbi Yitzhak Kaduri's vision into focus. The bombing of Afganistan began after sundown on October 13, 2001.

"The Gog and Magog conflict is prophesied to last for seven years at which time, autumn 2008, a major revelation concerning Mashiach (Messiah) will be made." (See page 195)

Apocalypse 2012 is a measured, sometimes amusing, well-written adventure into the world of potential disasters. The author does wobble a bit at the end. He apparently felt compelled to offer some type of direction or comfort to his readers. There is none. More to the point, once you accept that a disaster will occur without knowing its source, you can't do anything more than live your life for the moment, the best way you know how.

Lawrence E. Joseph can be forgiven for wobbling. After all, the entire earth wobbles in its rotation. The last wobble resulted in a disruption of energy streaming from the Milky Way, 26,000 years ago. The next disruption is expected to occur on 12/21/2012 at 11:11 pm Universal Time. (See page 33)

If this is science I am Superman.......2007-09-25

This book is a tour through some of the cutting edge research in; volcanology, geology, astronomy as viewed by some controversial figures in those fields. Mostly a non-scientific look into the fringe elements surrounding 2012, the end of the Mayan Long Count. The book dissapoints on two counts; it promises to add some insight into the 2012 popular discourse, and it claims to be a scientific investigation. Unfortunately it does neither, as it adds nothing new to the understanding of 2012, the Maya or the Mayan Calendar, and it fails miserably to explain any valid scientific research. But It does expound profusely on controversial research without ever presenting it in a scientific manner. In the growing universe of popular culture 2012 literature, this book sits at the bottom of the pile.

Not Proof, But Good Science.......2007-09-17

This book is not centered on Mayan calendar analysis, but rather on science. And it doesn't prove any date or time but does point in a very substantial way the ideas of a possible catastrophe. It relates to the recent (within 10 years, especially in 2003) solar flares on the Sun and subsequent earth storms and how they very much interact with each other. The Sun storms recorded are the most active in recent times possible the affects of hurricane Katrina and other Earth storms. Also, what is important is the gravitational pull, as well as the magnetic pull of the planets in our solar system, the sun affected much easier, as it being a gelatin like substance, not solid.

In addition, the entire solar system, according to Lawrence, is moving and about to enter an interstellar energy cloud which will have a major affect on magnetic pulls, a possible pole reversal, which could result in major electrical storms and other serious consequences. This will also affect the sun and solar system. Right now they are saying that there are serious cracks in the magnetic fields and there is more to this, as well as holes in the ozone which may be the result or something more than aerosol.

There are also other things to consider, such as the Wyoming supervolcano which, if erupted, is predicted to bring a major death toll over the earth as well ash to bring on a short term (10 years) ice age, which is one way the planet earth (Gaia- the theory of the earth being a living organism, as opposed to simply rock and elements - James Lovelock) can cool itself. This also relates to the earth's nuclear core being hot, in need of cooling when it gets overheated.

There is also the idea of the glaciers melting bringing less pressure on the Teutonic plates underneath, allowing more seismic activity and earthquakes. Not sure what to make of all this, except that the solar activity, the level of volcanic activity, the melting of glaciers, the interstellar cloud, as well as other theories of the overheated earth core and the ice melting fresh water in the salt oceans, possibly shutting down the conveyor belts all come into play. Now along with this, the Mayan calendar, and global warming in general, which Al Gore states will flood the oceans 24 feet, killing untold millions in land loss, agricultural disasters and famines, which then brings on major disease in poorer countries. It leaves us a lot to think about. I will say that if this interstellar cloud has the significance they are speaking about, then the magnetic reversals have the possibility of ending life as we know it.

I'd like to believe the optimistic escapee, the doomsday, wanna be believer and magick seeking individual, hopes that there is a noosphere (the idea of a psychic collective layer part of the organism earth) and looks towards the Mayans belief, that a consciousness transformation will take place, as our bodies and brains are made up of water and electricity. Who knows? It's a mystery, but there is global warming and definite climate changes ahead.

A Logical Inquiry Into An Otherwise Hysterical Topic.......2007-09-10

This informative book is geared towards adults with an analytical bent, who wish to enter into an objective inquiry into the various predictions and talk of future catastrophe associated with the year 2012. The author succeeds in exploring these matters from an objective, non-judgmental point of view. His artful use of humor throughout the book serves to lighten the mood of an otherwise morbid and bleak subject.

The discussion draws from diverse sources of knowledge including several branches of the physical sciences, metaphysics, and a wide variety of religious points of view, in order to offer a well-rounded survey of the subject at hand. The book includes an extensive bibliography showing the vast wealth of information the author consulted. Indeed, it would seem that he left no stone unturned. The author successfully guides the reader through a systematic and logical thinking process about such matters, thereby dispelling the hype and hysteria, which so commonly follow topics of this type.

Overall, I found this book to be a well-balanced and logical overview of the issues now facing humanity regarding what the near future may have in store for us. We tend to think that the world will go on just as it always has, and so the exploration of these topics makes us stop and consider that we may not be as invulnerable as we think we are. We all take events like the Sun rising and setting on schedule, the regular turning of the seasons, and the rising and falling of the tides, for granted. This book refocuses the lens, so to speak, to show that in the whole of the Earth's history, things have not always been stable and constant; but that the Earth has, in fact, gone through many great cataclysms throughout its history. What would make us immune to experiencing one such event, or events, of great upheaval and change?

If for nothing else, exploring these ideas is a great opportunity to do a personal survey of why we are here, living on this little planet, within the vast universe; and what our personal purpose for living might be. It is also an opportunity to pause and realize just how fragile life is, and really take to heart the need to make the most of what we have, and to protect the resources that God, through nature, graciously provide for us.

Remember Y2K? So much nonsense perpetuated by paranoid folks trying to impose their ungrounded fears onto others. We create our future. 2012 may be a self-fulfilling prophecy. In this new millennium it may be wise to step beyond superstition and stop being victims. Gaia is overpopulated and raped of its resources. What really needs to happen is collaboration and cooperation beyond the holy dollar - businesses changing their profit models away from growth only. And people honoring the planet beyond a blind consumerist and throw away culture. Rome's teachings waiting to be implemented globally...

A book that delivers.......2005-07-29

I've looked at a lot of art instruction books, wondering if they'd perform
as promised. This profusely illustrated book is the best I've seen!
The first thing you notice when you leaf through Illustrating Nature ~
Right-brain Art in a Left-brain World is that Irene Brady has skillfully
constructed exercises to lead you by the hand at your own pace down her
well-marked trail to professional illustration. For instance, the book begins by
explaining that artistic skills are natural to most of us and that to open
the door all you need is the key - then she hands you the key.
Starting with right-brain exercises to help you access your creative
skills, she then shows you how to really look at things, noticing and
comparing shapes and angles. The next step is to convey that information to
your hand and the paper - and amazingly, out comes a picture you'll be
amazed you could create. While beginners can get started with this book,
all artists can jump in at their own skill level and proceed from there to
a stage of excellence they've only dreamed of. There are exercises to
advance the artist's skill in such different areas as shading; use of

Irene Brady is an expert, biologically accurate nature artist, but that doesn't stop her from creating (and teaching others to create) lively, interesting nature art. I am very impressed by her book, Illustrating Nature, Right-brain Art in a Left-brain World. From the construction of a leaf or a wing to the hairs in an ear and the fur on the body, Brady leads you to analyze the structure of plant or animal parts. Then she skillfully helps you understand techniques to illustrate these features. You learn how to pay attention to the details and illustrate the entire organism in a realistic and delightful manner. Brady wisely encourages the developing artist to use computer graphics as part of their toolkit. She also provides an appendix with many design ideas for book and magazine layout and design and promotional graphics, brochures and the like for museums and nature centers. This is a superb book for classroom use and the individual learner. I would have given my eyeteeth for this book as a child. Maybe there is hope for me yet!

Excellent choice for learning to draw nature.......2004-12-28

A great deal of this art instructional book deals with trying to see things and draw using the artistic side of the brain instead of the analytical left side. Subjects covered include sketching, texture, tone, line art, drawing techniques, design and layout, drawing fur, eyes, and other parts of animals, and botanical drawing. The appendixes include multiple projects, field sketchbook and portfolio creation, and career tips if you want to pursue illustration as a career. In addition to the common techniques you typically find in an art instructional book there are dozens and dozens of field notes specific to nature illustration work in the field. These make the book a best choice for anyone who wants to engage in nature illustration. Illustrating Nature is recommended for drawing in general and highly recommended for nature drawing techniques.

Not that great...........2007-05-27

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I thought that it would have CPT exercises at the end of each section, but it didn't. All this book consists of is a brief overview of CPT codes. It also has a section on anatomy, terminology, and pathophysiology (these sections do have have brief exercises with answers). Carol Buck's Step by Step book is much better. There is also a pre-test at the end of book and a post test on a cd (that is included).

I can't help but be a fan.......2007-06-10

This book will always have a spot next to my heart since it was the book that got me interested in things like evolutionary biology, sociology and ethology. Even if some of his theories are hackneyed the book still achieved the goal of changing the way I think about the world around me and opened up new areas of study that have truly enriched my life. It's hard for me not to be generous with this book.

Also the book is a great reference for finding other books on many topics that should be read which has been a great help for me. Mr. Bloom's book is probably not for the professional sector or the semi-pros, but for amateurs like me the book can be an eye opener. Plus the book is so well written that it is a very good read in its own right. I found myself engrossed throughout and unable to put the book down in some places.

Don't come to this book looking for the definitive work to define your philosophy about the subjects of this book, but more to get a taste of the ideas that are out there and I think you won't be disappointed.

I think in my case the book was a huge success and if you're an amateur like me I think the book can really be a paradigm shift in your life.

Eye opener....Don't let the name fool you!!.......2007-05-20

I have to say, as a person who has always had a hard time understanding man's "methods of maddness", this book shed a interesting light on human behavior. I've read this book about 5 times (just to keep the concepts fresh in my mind) and have recomended this book to anyone looking for a little more information on the nature of man. To any scared of the title: Lucifer's name is simply used as a way to describe the kind of behavior examined in this book. Bloom confronts more of man's darker traits in this book and what better a name (or diety's name) to affix to these tendencies. I call this a must read for anyone looking for another angle from which to examine life.

This book is one of the most revealing in how the masses get suckered into believing lies, much like the stupidity of mormonism.

Howard Bloom is a genius in making the principals of thinking for yourself a revelation in simple terms.

Get it and never be suckered into BS lies again, unless your a mormon and your all ready screwed up bad.

OK for thinking but not believing.......2007-03-01

It is important when reading this book to keep in mind the book's foreword by David Sloan Wilson - he gives sound advice to 'not read it and believe but read it and think'. Sloan Wilson also rightly describes Bloom as having the 'brashness of a mass media denizen'. Sloan Wilson's support is essentially for the group selection argument which Bloom presents in his personal, passionate and largely flawed way.

Bloom takes the reader through a galloping overview of human group violence. His descriptions of group identification, group pecking-orders, group loyalty, imperialism etc are pretty much obvious and undeniable. Also the fact that nature is profligate and that much of what nature produces is expendable is largely true but Bloom's argument that this proves that the social unit comes first is flawed.

Bloom compares the social unit to the body - just as body cells die in order for the body itself to live, so individuals are sacrificed for the life of the group. This, of course, is a false analogy because body cells share identical DNA and the reproduction of the body's DNA is left to the germ cells. No other body cells could ever reproduce (naturally) into the next generation and therefore are sacrificing absolutely nothing.

Bloom confuses an apparent greater importance of the group with what is in reality the dependence of individuals on other group members for individual reproductive success/fitness. He also confuses individual survival with the survival of genes through time and seems not to understand inclusive fitness. His idea that people who commit suicide are altruistically ridding their group of a burden should mean that the sick, elderly, homeless, unemployed etc should be killing themselves by the thousand. It is far more likely that it is more to do, ultimately, with reproductive defeat where they are no longer able to compete or compare well with peers and are no longer attractive to the opposite sex and/or are a failure as a parent. If the group is being relieved of a burden it is incidental. They would, after all, not be a burden to the group if they took on some undesirable though necessary low status work rather than kill themselves.

If the social unit comes first there should be no dissent, no anti-social behavior, no interest groups etc. The fact that these exist in all societies shows that individuals whose self-interest is not being satisfied by the group will attempt to cause trouble for the group. Bloom is only right in pointing out the obvious fact that members of a group, like members of a family, will tend to pull together if attacked from outside but this is also mutual self-interest.

Another aspect of Bloom's book that is flawed is his weak treatment of the differences between the sexes. He uses a few bits of evidence to supposedly prove the violence of females and then resumes the main theme of the book - ie male violence - as if the matter has been properly dealt with. Bloom uses the usual argument about females having selected male traits through mate choice yet he also writes of how women have been kidnapped and raped throughout history by the violent men he depicts. There is an unresolved contradiction here between the idea that females choose their mates and the fact that most girls throughout history and in much of the world today are simply resigned to the fact that they will have the father of their children chosen for them by their own father or brothers. Female sexuality has clearly been under the control of men for a very long time and it should at least be given some consideration that male traits have been selected for by males themselves which could have created a feedback loop of male violence etc.

'The Lucifer Principle' is an entertaining read in its description of male-male competitive behavior. Violence between groups of humans is as grotesque as Bloom describes but it is a mistake to believe that this proves group selection and to lose sight of the individual's self-interest - and especially the gene's self-interest - in what shapes human behavior. This book is worth reading only as an aid to thinking - not to any great understanding or belief.

Changed the way I deal with people.......2007-01-09

This book is so startling in the way that Bloom looks at people it is almost a new paradigm for sociology. After reading the book it changed the way that I looked at every aspect of my personal and business relationships with friends, colleagues, everybody.
Well researched and argued.
A must for anybody who deals with other people, which means everybody.
