Book Description
This consumer-oriented textbook addresses the principles of risk management without skimping on the discussion of insurance. It summarizes the nature of pure risk on the individual and on society and illustrates how insurance can be used to deal with the problems posed by such risk. Mirroring the diverse experience of its authors, the text is equally effective in presenting the principles of insurance theory and offering how-to advice to students. Throughout, the main emphasis is on the insurance product and the use of insurance within the risk management framework. The traditional fields of life insurance, health insurance, property and liability insurance, and social insurance are treated in terms of their relationship to the wide range of insurable risks to which the individual and the business firm are exposed.

I thought it would be a sleeper, but quite the contrary..I wish I would have read this book 20 years ago.
How Do I Write a Review about an Insurance Book?.......2003-03-04
Well, I guess I can try to review this book from the only perspective I read it from: that of a student. I had to read it for my CFP class on Insurance, and, as an introduction to most forms of insurance, it explains the forms in a very methodical and systematic way; it was very easy to follow and tough to get completely lost.
Honestly, I was never really fascinated with insurance. My life-licensing class was 24 hours of classroom time spread out over one weekend, so maybe that has created some insurance-related intellectual scars. The sections on Life Insurance and the basic components of any insurance contract and the whole insurance process were already familiar to me, so I found those sections incredibly uninteresting. The other forms of insurance were much more interesting and gave me a great foundation for other insurance studies I've done since.
The prose of the book, too, flows extremely well. In fact, I usually just lightly read passages explaining computations and formulas because I come back later to review them in-depth; however, while reading this book, I actually felt I fully understood most of the computations even while I read (which almost never happens because most formula-explaining reads much like Kant's "Metaphysics of Morals").
Just one closing point... I guess you'd have to be either Insurance Commissioner or a professor of insurance to be really interested in this material, but the authors write in a way that allows even the average CFP or insurance student to come away from the book with a good sense of how insurance works and where it fits into an individual's financial plan.

How To Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies.......2007-05-14
My favorite choice of books on dealing with the death of a loved one. Educates you on things to expect from grief, suggestions to make it through, and then ways to reinvest in life without your loved one.
Understand your grief........2006-11-10
After learning of this book through the Boulder,CO hospice organization, I have recommended it to three close friends. They all gave it in turn to other family members. Explanations of the grief process reassure the reader that they need not worry if they do not 'grieve' in the same way
others do. Much wisdom to be found here.
How to go on living when someone you love dies.......2006-03-11
This is very easy to read and very practical. The author has great insight into grief and gives much knowledge for men and women going through grief. The book not only deals with all phases of grief, but also looks at secondary losses as well.
I would highly recommed this book to anyone going through grief no matter how fresh the loss or the type of loss incurred.
How to Go On Living When Someone You Love Dies.......2005-09-22
I found the book to be very helpful to me in coping with the sudden loss of my Father. It helped me to confirm that I was not losing my mind.
How to go on Living when someone dies.......2005-09-15
Fresh in my grief, I found this a hard book to read. It has a lot of text book information and probably is very helpful later in grief. But, it reads like a text book and I found it hard to process when my grief was so fresh.

Great Book.......2007-08-09
Really enjoyed reading this book. Excellent akutobiography of St. Therese. What a beautiful life she lead. Everyone should read this if for nothing else than inspiration from an extradorinary woman. You don't have to be a religious person to get something out of this autobiography.
A must read!!.......2007-07-30
This is a must read for anyone who wants to know how God can change their life forever. What divine wisdom is spoken by this saint of the Church!! Her "Little Way" to serving and loving Jesus is persuasive to anyone struggling with the "how" of living a Christlike life.
Great Seller!.......2007-01-19
Seller had a great price for the product and she was very honest about the condition of the book.
The Little Flower.......2006-01-05
Therese of Lisieux lived a very sheltered life. As we begin the book she actually seems to be spoiled by her family. Her parents were financially secure and devoutly religious. Therese knew she wanted to be a nun from the age of three. She had bouts of poor health and she suffered the loss of her mother early in her life. And then the sisters she relied on left one by one to join the convent. But she also had security and love from her family. She also had an incredible sense of self-direction.
In her book Saint Therese describes souls as similar to different types of flowers. Some are roses, others lilies, and some like orchids, for example. And all can be equally pleasing to God in their own way, when seeking his role for them. People have different talents and different struggles, but these characteristics do not mean that any type is more valued than the other.
Saint Therese describes the Christian Church as one body, and how she wants to be the heart that loves. She writes frequently of the many ways that God is love. She believed that heaven for her would be to be able to help people on earth after she died. She writes that any sacrifice in daily life can be offered to God, for the conversion of souls, or help of others, whether it is the suffering of an illness or loss, or the performance of a mundane daily chore. Therese also writes much she preferred to speak directly to God as a child when she prayed instead of using formal liturgy.
"Story of a Soul" has Many Lessons to Offer.......2005-09-25
"Story of a Soul" is a collection of three manuscripts written by Therese of Lisieux near the end of her very brief life. Therese lived in France at the end of the 19th century and spent nine of her twenty-four years in a Carmelite cloister, yet this simple woman and her "little way" have touched millions of lives in the years since her death.
Therese lived and preached a spirituality based on the scripture passages that urge becoming like a little child, living a life of trust in God. While she never did anything the world might consider "great", she made the most of the opportunities presented to her. She took advantage of offering to God little sacrifices such as sitting straight in a chair without resting her back and going out of her way to be kind to a fellow sister she did not particularly care for.
From her earliest years, she had an intimate relationship with Jesus. Although she was very close to her family, She writes, "I knew how to speak only to [Jesus]; conversations with creatures, even pious conversations, fatigued my soul." In her final year, as she was dying from tuberculosis, she welcomed her suffering even as she experienced a crisis of faith which plunged her into a dark night of the soul.
The three manuscripts that comprise "Story of a Soul" each have a different tone due to the fact that they were addressed to three different people in response to three distinct requests. Manuscript "A" is addressed to Therese's sister Pauline, also known as Mother Agnes. She was a Carmelite nun as well and at the time was the Prioress of the convent. Mother Agnes had asked her to put down on paper her recollections from her childhood. It was intended as a "family souvenir" and as a result has a very familiar, sentimental tone. In it, Therese tells the story of her life from her earliest remembrances through her profession as a Carmelite.
Manuscript "B" was directed to another of Therese's elder sisters, Marie, who also resided at the Carmel cloister. Sister Marie of the Sacred Heart later recalled that "I asked her myself during her last retreat (September, 1896) to put in writing her little doctrine as I called it." The shortest of the three manuscripts, it contains the heart of Therese's insights. It consists of a letter to her sister in which she explains that "Jesus does not demand great actions from us but simply surrender and gratitude," and a love letter to Jesus in which she confides her desire to be "the warrior, the priest, the apostle, the doctor, the martyr." Using the metaphor that St. Paul established in 1 Corinthians 12 of the body of Christ with its many parts, Therese comes to the conclusion that in order to fulfill her desire to be all things she must be love. "I shall be love. Thus I shall be everything, and thus my dream will be realized."
In Manuscript "C", Therese returns to the story of her life, this time at the request of Mother Marie de Gonzague who had taken over as Prioress. It tells of her remaining years at Carmel up to three months before her death in 1897 when she no longer had the energy to write. In her final words she exclaims "I go to Him with confidence and love . . ."
Therese never intended any of these words for publication, yet in the last months of her life she seemed to have had a premonition that her words would eventually do much good in the world. "Story of a Soul" provides a blueprint for a life lived in relationship with Christ. Therese comes across as extremely human, struggling with life as all of us do, yet she had such trust and faith. We are wise to learn from her example.

Excellent, excellent book.......2007-03-08
This is the most interesting and informative book I've seen yet dealing with adoptions through Vietnam. A very thorough book that has the most striking photos. Of course I had to take a number of small breaks to keep from tearing up too much when I read it out loud to my three boys. If you are adopting from Vietnam, this is the book you want.
As an adoptive parent..........2006-09-02
If you only buy one book for your child about their birth culture - this is it (my advice goes for the When You Were Born in China and Korea books as well). Why? The stories we will tell our children, even their life books will be told with some emotion and our memory behind them. Though life books are tailored to their specific start in life and are meant to be purely informational for our children (as opposed to emotion based), the reality is that it is hard to keep from editorializing it and acting as the "color commentator." This book does what we can't do and does it in a broad fashion. When we were on the journey to our oldest child in China my husband gave me the When You Were Born in China book and of all the books I'd bought or received during our wait, that was the one that was never far from my mind because it told the story of our journey. I love this book because it brings to life for our children the story of how they forever became part of our family.
If you are reading this review because you know someone adopting from Vietnam, you will not regret buying this book for them, it's truly a treasure. If you are reading this because you are in the process of adopting from Vietnam, congratulations - there is truly no experience or journey quite like the one you are on. This book will not only mark your journey, but it is a great thing to take with you on your adoption trip. We took our oldest daughter's book with us to China and had the director of her orphanage sign it as a way to celebrate and remember where she had come from and a person who had been a part of her life in China.
Faces of Adoption.......2002-01-29
I totally recommend this book! The pictures are lovely, and the text is excellent (best for ages 6 and up, although can be para-phrased for those younger). The pictures put clear images into my mind's eye, images that had been absent prior to reading this book. Further, seeing the orphanges and the caretakers, not to mention the beautiful children, have allowed me to visualize more clearly where my daughter will soon come from.
I highly recommend this book to all, whether in the process of adopting, having already adopted or simply interested in a good, hearwarming read. You won't be disappointed!
Good, but too complicated for small children.......2002-01-03
This is a very good book and I recommend it for anyone adopting from Vietnam. We will be adopting our baby in a few months and it reflects everything we have learned about our process so far. Also, if for no other reason, buy this book for the beautiful photographs.
BUT, and this is a big BUT, this book is not something you can sit down and read a toddler or even have a first or second grade student read through. It's fairly long (44 pages) and has complicated enough words that I would guess it's at a third or fourth grade reading level. Believe it or not, this book was actually best suited for educating our relatives unfamiliar with how Vietnamese adoptions work. I would love to see the authors write a related book (with fewer pages and simpler words) that I can read to my child when he/she will be at pre-school level.
does anyone hear my cry?.......2001-11-15
I think the book is excellent. For those, such as myself who were adopted from Vietnam.

A true alternative to the empty falsehoods of secular psychology.......2006-10-24
One of the previous Amazon reviewers of this book wrote the following (the review in question is to be found in the series of reviews for the other edition of the book, by St. Bede's Publications from 1983):
"And I may add that for the anxious or depressed- this book is a sure remedy."
That is absolutely correct, for the following reason: Anxiety and depression are actually maladies of the heart with SPIRITUAL origins, not "diseases" of the emotions, or "chemical imbalances," as secular psychology and psychiatry would falsely have one believe. These impoverished worldly outlooks cannot diagnose the origins of these maladies accurately, nor can they offer a cure. Quite the contrary, they pose serious obstacles to realizing the only true cure, which consists in the complete abandonment of oneself to the love of Christ, as revealed on the Cross.
Since the cause of these maladies is ultimately spiritual in nature, so too must be the cure, and I BELIEVE IN LOVE is a very good articulation of what this cure involves. The cure essentially consists in the unreserved abandonment of oneself, and of all one's earthly hopes, to God. It is important here to be clear as to what this means: It is NOT the case that one is called to suppress these eartly hopes unnaturally, or to live under the false pretense that these eartly hopes do not really exist. Rather, the book insists that one make them all conditional - EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM, including both the deepest longings of the heart for earthly goods, as well as the most basic physical needs of earthly life. One must be fully willing to make the realization of ALL of them entirey subject to the Loving Providence of God.
This attitude goes hand in hand with a view of suffering and death that is bereft of fear, and that regards both merely as the passageway to eternal happiness in the presence of God. This notion, while profoundly true, is something very radical and alien in today's cultural milieu, which is fundamentally oriented towards avoiding the subject of death entirely, and towards encouraging people to distract themselves from their suffering through the indulgence in and consumption of needless and empty material frivolities.
In view of these considerations, those who aspire to embrace the outlook articulated in this book must be aware that it takes a great deal of courage to do so. There are many elements of what the book counsels that would be met with antagonism and hostility by the false paradigms of secular psychology and psychiatry, and would be seen by them as "masochistic," "psycho-pathological," and the like. Since this type of erroneous thinking pervades our culture to the point of being almost as ubiquitous as the air we breathe, even in many ostensibly Christian settings, these types of false accusations against the true Christian Way that is articulated in this book must be aggressively resisted. As I say, carrying this out takes a considerable amount of courage, especially when one is in a weakened condition due to the very types of anxiety and depression that secular psychology and psychiatry falsely claim to diagnose accurately.
Childlike simplicity........2005-10-10
Fr. Elbee invites us to look at our Lord as St. Therese looked at him - through the eyes of child who is loved immensely. Fr. gives practical advice on how to love our Lord boldly and how to have a humble and unshakeable confidence in Him who loved us first. Fr.makes the distinction between fleeting feelings and true love which he explains is a disposition of the soul, the mind and the heart. Fr. is a passionate Frenchman; Therese was a passionate Frenchwoman and so a holy passion for the Lord marks every page of this book. It's easy to read and solidly based on scripture which Fr.quotes frequently. This is a book to awaken or rekindle confidence in Jesus.
I believe in Love: A Personal Retreat Based on the Teaching of St. Therese of Lisieux.......2005-10-10
This saint, during her very short life, reached the pinnical of spirituality. Who better to teach you a how to on your own journey. Highly recommended by Retreat Directors in this area.
Wonderful Meditations on Therese's Wisdom.......2005-04-27
"I Believe in Love" is a wonderful introduction to the wisdom of Therese of Lisieux. Reading it made me more fully appreciate her autobiography "Story of a Soul." Each chapter of the book comprises different topics that she addressed in her writings, and serves well as a meditation. I think the author states that it is his intent to provide the reader with a personal retreat based on the teachings of Therese. I read one chapter a night before I went to bed.
Therese of Lisieux's approach to spirituality is accessible to any one in any walk of life. She describes souls as similar to different types of flowers. Some are roses, others lilies, and some like orchids, for example. And all can be equally pleasing to God in their own way, when seeking his role for them. People have different talents and different struggles, but these characteristics do not mean that any type is more valued than the other.
The chapters are divided according to topics that address needs of everyone; regardless of what type of flower they are. The topics are drawn from examples of Therese's life and writings, but the author also includes many biblical quotes and some writings of other Christians, such as Teresa of Avila, that support the advice given.
It is fitting that the first chapter describes love, as Therese sated that is the Church is one body, then she want to be its heart, that loves every one, because God is love. The chapter instructs how to demonstrate love to God and others through all actions of our lives, regardless of our station or ability. The chapter "Fraternal Charity" speaks in greater details about relations with others and how to fulfill our duties towards them
The chapter "Unshakeable Confidence" outlines advice for people who experience spiritual dryness. It amazed me to learn that Therese of Lisieux experiences dryness, and helps console me when I feel similarly, because if some one who lived as holy a life as she did suffered from this problem, than I should not feel disillusioned from the experience.
"Humble Confidence" is a chapter that provides sound guidance for acting in faith. It seems that there is a fine line between being confident in religion and proud, the latter of which is not a virtue.
"Abandonment to Jesus" and "The Cross" are helpful chapters for people experiencing difficult times, and anxiety about the future; whether it is the daily grind that is wearing one down, or a specific setback. And Catholic may benefit particularly from the chapter on the "Eucharist," as the late Pope has named this year the "Year of the Eucharist."
The book is easy to read and personal. The organization of the chapters, are useful for providing support to people during different struggles. I read the book through once, and return to different sections, depending on my needs, but each chapter is a complete meditation in itself and the book can be skipped around. Each reading makes me appreciate them more.
St. Therese Cuts Through to the Essence of Spiritual Living.......2004-02-15
I received this book as a gift. A quick look at the Table of Contents and the conferences listed there had me feeling drawn to concentrate on this rather than dozens of other books waiting to be read on my shelves. I found that the book was exactly what the caption on the cover said: A Personal Retreat!
Based on the Teaching of Saint Thérèse, Father d'Elbée quickly gets to the heart of what we all need to hear: How we are truly loved by God! Saint Thérèse is also one to go beyond what we normally imagine. The confidence she claims we can place in God; the confidence we should have in placing ourselves and our total trust in God; is both necessary for us to hear and very comforting. She is so confident, she says: forget you past! Just tell Jesus: "Make up for what I have done badly" and "Do what I have left undone." She gives her own personal examples.
Father d'Elbée presents Saint Thérèse in such a realistic light. She appears as she truly is, for those who have studied her life, a child of God, similar to what she calls herself (Thérèse of the Child Jesus) and a disciple of Saint John of the Cross.
Like all the saints, her message is founded on the virtue of humility, which she claims is so absolutely necessary. The message we receive is that if we knew what we could gain from this we would thirst for it. Father makes it clear that "no one but a disciple of Jesus can be humble." The simple reason is that it is not humanly possible because of our fallen human nature. We need His grace!
The conference on "Great Desires, Humility, and Peace" is extremely helpful. One example, showing our blindness especially in respect to our need for humility, comes from the statement: "The majority of hurts, offended feelings, grudges, and bitternesses in life with others come from this obsession with our rights [i.e. we are always seeing injustice and demanding justice for ourselves and miserable when it does not happen], this need for esteem [the egotistical self-fulfilling pride that Saint John talks about], so strongly woven into our 'self.'" This is very true. We can only change ourselves. The solution for most of our problems lies within our grasp. It does, however, mean looking at ourselves with brutal honesty. But, it's the price we must pay for finding humility and peace.
Don't jump to this part of the book. Read the whole thing. I am sure there is plenty that each person needs to hear. There is a lot that will hit home in each chapter.
The Masters all say, not to advance in the Spiritual Life is to fall back. This book gives us food to help advance and keep advancing. Saint Thérèse is very profound in what she says, but when it comes down to what she asks us to do, they are very simple things-yes, maybe very hard to integrate into our lives, but it will not take a rocket scientist to know what she is talking about.
If the book has the same effect on you that it had on me, give it as a gift to someone else. That's what I am doing now. I received it as a gift. I am ordering two more copies now for others.
Book Description
In June 2002, journalists throughout the world began to hear of the gang rape of a Pakistani woman from the impoverished village of Meerwala. The rape was ordered by a local clan known as the Mastoi and was arranged as punishment for indiscretions allegedly committed by the woman's brother. While certainly not the first account of a female body being negotiated for honor in a family, and (sadly) not the last, journalists and activists were captivated. This time the survivor had chosen to fight back, and in doing so, single-handedly changed the feminist movement in Pakistan. Her name was Mukhtar Mai, and her decision to stand up to her accusers was an act of bravery unheard of in one of the world's most adverse climates for women.
By July 2002, Mai's case was headline news in Pakistan and under international scrutiny, the government awarded her the equivalent of 8,500 U.S. dollars in compensation money (a historic settlement), and her attackers were sentenced to death. Mukhtar Mai went on to open a school for girls in an effort to ensure that future generations would not suffer, as she had, from illiteracy.
In this rousing account, Mai describes her experience and how she has since become an agent for change and a beacon of hope for oppressed women around the world. Timely and topical, In the Name of Honor is the remarkable and inspirational memoir of a woman who fought and triumphed against exceptional odds.
Customer Reviews:
Honor is your name.......2007-01-30
If courage has a new meaning it would be Mukhtran Mai; a simple woman caught up in a storm of malevolence. The village council verdict of "gang-rape" in retaliation for falsified accusation of her brother's questionable frolic rendevouz with the tribal leaders daughter. Mai was quarentined for a ruthless gang-rape by savages of our times. Against all odds she stood up and fought back for justice and is redeemed. Her revenge on the society that shackled her down was a gesture of kindness by setting up a school by all the earnings she received as compensation for her struggles. A school where the family of the savages do attend. In her you find the spirit of forgiveness and mercy. I salute you Mukhtar Mai; for you a semblance for all the goodness left in our society.
To the readers i recommend this highly.
A Story of Extraordinary Courage in the Face of Monstrous Adversity.......2006-11-17
This is an astounding story of a simple ordinary Pakistani woman raised in poverty and illiteracy, who has courageously managed to fight against the violence and gender discrimination directed at her and countless other women, with an insistence on justice, education, and gender equality. Mukhtar Mai, who herself has been a victim of one of the many `honor punishments' still widely prevalent in rural Pakistan, was 'justifiably' gang-raped as a punishment for a crime neither she nor her family committed. To have such a rape-victim in the family is considered a social taboo and most of the women who are in similar situations end up committing suicides. But Mukhtar Mai did something different. In spite of getting thoughts to commit suicide, she chose the more difficult path - she decided to live and fight against the injustice inflicted upon her and her family. With the help of the media and various national and international NGOs, Mukhtar Mai's case gained worldwide popularity and in a matter of days a poor illiterate woman living in absolute obscurity in one of the remotest parts of Pakistan gained international fame. This story is a personal rendition of the many trials and tribulations Mukhtar Mai has gone through in the process of obtaining justice in one of the most chauvinistically male-favored justice systems in the world. It is also a story of a stupendous victory at a personal level wherein Mukhtar Mai uses the aid she gets from all over the world to establish a school in her village so that girls living in her village and the surrounding villages can use literacy and education to fearlessly protect themselves from similar injustices. This book would obviously be any feminist's favorite but more than that it is a must-read for anyone interested in the sociological and gender-related issues in the subcontinent.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent and readable.......2007-06-13
Berg and Steiner's well written book is my new most valuable resource. As a graduate student who wants to focus on child and adolescent therapy, but in a program that focuses more on adult family therapy, this book was very helpful to me. Steiner took Berg's solution focused therapy and used it with children in a creative way. They give case studies and discuss some more common issues you will see in therapy, such as ADHD, trauma, abuse, etc. They also discuss the therapy in general and how to apply it to children. If you are planning on ever working with children, this book is a must, even if you don't necessarily agree with everything they write.
Insoo Rocks!.......2004-09-21
This is a must for anyone who works with children. Not only do the authors explore solution work in general, but tailor it for children. They include specific exercises if you need a little help getting your creativity flowing. I would highly recommend this book for students, interns, and practitioners, basically anyone who works with children on a regular basis.
