Book Description
For twenty-eight years, things have been tripping along nicely for Cannie Shapiro. Sure, her mother has come charging out of the closet, and her father has long since dropped out of her world. But she loves her friends, her rat terrier, Nifkin, and her job as pop culture reporter for The Philadelphia Examiner. She's even made a tenuous peace with her plus-size body.
But the day she opens up a national women's magazine and sees the words "Loving a Larger Woman" above her ex-boyfriend's byline, Cannie is plunged into misery...and the most amazing year of her life. From Philadelphia to Hollywood and back home again, she charts a new course for herself: mourning her losses, facing her past, and figuring out who she is and who she can become.

I'm surprised.......2007-10-09
It's time for the uh, older woman to clock in and make remarks about this book.
Like many other readers, I enjoyed this book more than I expected I would -- the title is off-putting. Knowing that it had been a bestseller, I picked it up cheap at a library sale.
Though I am probably older than the main character's mother, I enjoyed the book and could relate to it. I'm not a large, overweight (well, okay, I'm overweight NOW - but I'm also old!) Jewish girl, yet there are elements of the "Cannie" character that hit me right where I live: feelings of confusion about men caused by having a difficult father; feelings of feminine doubt and/or fearfulness existing side-by-side with strength; mixed feelings about pregnancy; being a writer and thinking you'll never get published; wanting a lot of money; and more.
I found myself weeping during the scenes in which Cannie (WHY such an awful name? she might as well be called Buttie or Bottley) has her um, medical emergency (don't want to be a spoiler here!). And, I didn't quite know why. What I suspect is that the situation and its portrayal reached to some deep levels of the psyche -- a mark of a fine writer, and something which elevates the book above simple beach fiction. Still, there is a bit too much wish-fulfillment and fantasy for me, though I feel conflicted about that also -- after all, didn't Jane Austen's heroines wind up with hubbies and money? (oops....)
If an old snob liked me liked the book, I think a younger woman, closer to Cannie's age and situation, might really resonate to it. But what do I know?
Good read!.......2007-09-13
I really enjoyed going through all of Cannie's emotions on her incredible journey. It's been a long time since I've been able to escape in some good fiction. If you like chick lit, this is a great book! I'm a 35 year old married mother of two and I loved every bit of this book as much as the single gal. In fact, it was a single friend of mine who recommended I read it. I laughed ... I felt angry ... and I cried. It was a great book and I'd love to read a sequel...or see it as a movie!
"Good In Bed"... enough to put me to sleep!!!.......2007-09-09
Okay, I will give this book 2 stars as it picked up in the end a little but this character is way to depressed and I (a larger women) cannot relate to this at all. There is just no excuse! Did we forget that she broke it off with the guy and called him weak, pathetic, etc. Even to the end Cannie does not seem to wake up and "get strong" she just whines!!!! Jennifer is a great author but this was a slow, depressing read and I did not feel anything when I completed it. Usually you are sad because its over, or smiling with tears, or laughing... the last paragraph was weird and I was just glad it was over so I could start something else! Anyway, I always finish what I start but it is NOT a BEACH read... Try Sheryl Woods or Janet Evanovich or Rachel Gibson, those you will love! Will not pass this one in the box to my friends.
If you like Jennifer Weiner, I recommed listening to this.......2007-09-04
I really enjoyed this little story. I drive a hour a day to work; and had a lot of fun listening to it. Its a no brainer kind of story but sweet and fun.
My favorite Jenifer Weiner Novel.......2007-09-01
This book if fantastic. Every single (woman) that I have spoken to about this book, or recommended to the book to has loved it. It's easy and fun to read, and you can relate to the main character. Despite the title, "good in bed" really doesn't have much to do with the actual novel.
The title derives from an ex's new magazine article in which he describes "loving a larger woman." It's hysterical. Any woman who has ever felt that they are too heavy, too large of thigh or butt, will love the self deprectating and spot on humor in this novel.
My other favorite by Jen Weiner are Little Earthquakes.
Book Description
More than ever, new parents are bringing their babies into their beds, but ironically, many of these parents feel alone in doing so. With warmth and humor, Good Nights brings the family bed out of the closet, and gives expert answers to parents common questions on everything from safety to sound sleep to sex. Good Nights also offers easy-to-tailor advice on when and how to move children into their own beds, and reasoned responses and snappy comebacks for critics. The authors build their case for the family bed on new scientific research, which has uncovered a wealth of dvantages for babies who share their parents bed. Among these benefits are possible protection from SIDS, andparadoxicallymore independence later in life. With its perfect blend of science and common sense, Good Nights is poised to become the new best friend and must-have accessory of all new parents.

Here's to cozy mornings!.......2006-11-12
Dr Jay gave me the info I needed to make the best decision for my family. My husband and I waivered on whether or not to do the family bed thing- were we not teaching our child something? were we just being lazy? would it change our relationship? But it felt right and we all seemed happier?! After reading this book and another "traditional approach" (albeit modern western traditions)to sleep, I found this book to have much more science behind it. The support he gives will help you feel comfortable finalizing your decision and give you ammo to share with sceptics. Dr Jay provides a loving way to create cozy memories that will last a lifetime. Good Night!
Could not be happier........2006-11-03
This book is a fun, quick yet informative read on co-sleeping. It helped us make the decision to co-sleep (which we are SO glad we did) and also helped "convert" the wary grandparents.
A+!
Great Resource for those Interested in Co-sleeping or Attachment Parenting.......2006-08-07
While the really important information on cosleeping (mattress/bed safety, not smoking/drinking alcohol/taking any drugs that would make it hard for you to wake up, etc.) have been covered in several parenting books that I already own, I really liked this book because it focuses on just the one aspect of parenting and dissects it pretty fully. I won't provide a synopsis because other reviewers have already done so, but I particularly liked the ways to respond to others criticism of your decision to co-sleep. I have found as a young parent that people really do pry into all aspects of your life and offer their opinion whether you want it or not. Having resources that back up my choices makes it a little easier to stand firm around people who are older and 'wiser.' Glad I bought it, will reread. I noticed there is an in-depth treatment of gentle ways to ease baby out of the bed, and will be reading that later.
Fantastic book, fun to read.......2006-03-22
I really enjoyed reading this book. I intended to cosleep (and I do), based on friends' experiences parenting, but it's nice to have a lot of information to feel more secure in one's decision. And oddly enough, this has the best pictures of side-lying nursing I've found yet.
But it's just plain fun to read, whether you have children of your own or not.
A great book.......2006-03-18
With so much out there trying to convince you that tough love is appropriate for babies and toddlers, this book truly provides a balance.

Drab, dark , little quilts.......2007-05-09
I was rather disappointed with this book. None of the quilts really stuck out as something I would like to make.... And the colors were drab: dark red, green and ochre. Only a few projects were cute enough for me to look at twice. I think I will be donating my copy to the public library in the near future.
Debbie Mumm Is the Best.......2005-03-31
Wow, What a great price and fast shipping. This book is beautiful. I have most of Debbie Mumm's books but I didn't have this one. I love to do her projects. Her books have made me the quilter I have become over the last 10-15 years. Her books are easy to read and the instructions are easy to follow. A beginner can pick up any book and complete a project. I do several of her projects a year. I have given away many, many items made from her books. It is my favorite gift to give someone. Now with this new book I will be start something new. Thank you to Debbie Mumm. Your projects are fun and you are the best.
Gorgeous Book.......2001-09-24
This book is another gorgeous creation from the very talented Debbie Mumm! She has written this book in a very clear easy to understand style. The projects are lovely and range from decorating timber trays to making wallhangings to an absolutely gorgeous shower curtain. Debbie takes us through her own home, as well as those of her friends, and shows us complete rooms and how to make all of the projects in the room. I love this book and appreciate the clear, concise instructions for each project. There is even a guide to the fabrics Debbie has used in each item as well as basic instructions on how to complete your projects with either machine or hand quilting techniques.
Debbie Mumm's most comprehensive book.......2001-07-13
I have read several of Debbie Mumm's books, but this is the only one I actually own. It is filled with useful and beautiful ideas for quilts, wallhangings, accessories such as pot holders and other decorative items. At $... for 288 pages it is also by far the best value Debbie Mumm book. There are wonderful applique shapes to use for a variety of projects, and all seasons are covered. My only objection is that I wish projects were shown in several color schemes. She loves rich red, green, blue and gold (which are fine) but I would have liked to see a more varied color scheme throughout. Well worth the money nonetheless.
Maravilhoso!.......2000-06-08
Foi o meu primeiro livro de patchwork,e fiquei encantada ! Trabalhos lindos,passo-a-passo fácil de entender e um resultado maravilhoso! AMEI!
Book Description
An infant who wails deep into the night, a toddler who keeps popping out of bed, a young child who procrastinates long past his bedtime - does your child's behavior give you nightmares? Many kids seem programmed from birth with bedtime behavior that frustrates and frazzles parents who have difficulty ignoring a baby's cry or who feel guilty enforcing an early curfew for a child they haven't seen all day. Yet getting sufficient sleep is critical for children's health and happiness. With humor and empathy, child psychologist Dr. Patrick Friman outlines the problems related to bedtime for children from infancy through middle school and gives you advice and tips on how to handle them. In many cases, he provides several options so you can choose the approach you feel most comfortable with. His suggestions can help end those bedtime hassles and get you and your child the good night's sleep you both need!

Was helpful to us.......2007-02-12
We used this book for tips for our 17 mo. old and 31 mo. who both went from going to bed like angels to having fits about it overnight, and both decided to do it at the same time.
Most of the info for the age groups we were looking at was common sense. But it was good to hear it again from someon who was an expert and wrote in a fashion that did not talk down to you. Very helpful for weary parents to hear.
We also use "The Sleep Fairy" by Janie Peterson. We got the books separately, but Dr. Friman also recommended this book.
Not very helpful for infants.......2007-01-10
I didn't find much usable information in this book. It basically said I can let a baby cry a little or cry a lot, but didn't give me any good steps for teaching him how to get to sleep and stay asleep on his own. I've since read a much more helpful book titled, "The Baby Sleep Solution" that does give good, concrete steps to follow.
Good book - but not exactly what I needed.......2006-11-10
This book gives lots of good information - most of it is probably common knowledge - but as a parent it's always comforting to hear the experts tell you it's the right thing to do. Although for my specific circumstances this book wasn't exactly what I was looking for. But the information was worth the purchase.
Enthusiastically recommended for parents or caregivers of young children, and also an excellent baby shower gift.......2005-09-11
Clinical Professor of Pediatrics Patrick C. Friman, Ph.D. shares his wisdom with sleepless parents in Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You: Now Get Into Bed and Go To Sleep!, a simple guide for anyone having problems getting their children to go to bed. Chapters cover specific issues with helping children from infants to toddlers, preschoolers, elementary schoolers, middle schoolers and beyond. Written in plain terms, Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You emphasizes the importance of building good sleep habits, and warns parents that children of all ages are always learning - and therefore responding to their excessive crying, defiance, attempts to leave the bedroom, and other activities with an abundance of warmth or gentleness will create positive reinforcement for the negative behavior of resisting bedtime! Good Night, Sweet Dreams, I Love You walks the reader through time-tested procedures to help children get their sleep, including "cold turky" and graduated methods for tuning out nighttime crying, and the "robotic return" method for dealing with a child who wanders out of bed (return the child silently and emotionlessly and say nothing, so as not to associate comfort or other positive responses to a child deliberately leaving the bedroom). Above all, stresses Friman, the parent must remain in control and not negotiate, discuss or argue about bedtime with a very young child; children need rules, limits, parental authority, and sleep at an early age. A brief discussion of problems such as bedwetting, night terrors, or sleepwalking rounds out this straightforward, problem-solving guide, which points parents to a list of resources for further reading as needed. Enthusiastically recommended for parents or caregivers of young children, and also an excellent baby shower gift.

Great Story - for them and you.......2007-10-04
I was in the book business for ages, so I actually remember when Go To Bed Fred was controvertial. Why? Because Fred was the first non-Jim Henson Muppet, which, at the time seemed almost a scandal.
But I love Fred. I actually got Fred from my Scholastic rep WAY back in the day and he has remained one of my favorites. His story is cheery, and he is a delight to play with. And, unlike many storybook puppets, my hand actually fits him.
So yes, buy Fred. Love Fred. I am grateful that after so many years his book is back in print...and more importantly, that Fred is, too!

Fred is awesome!.......2006-12-12
We were given the book, Go To Bed Fred, and the puppet before my daughter was born. I thought she'd be frightened of the puppet so I'd put it away for the time being, but one evening when a babysitter was with our, then, 6 month old, she brought out the puppet and later told us what a huge hit it was. Fred, both the book and the puppet, provided hours of great fun and many smiles for many years. Though my daughter is now nine and has outgrown the book, she still smiles at Fred when I get him out. I bring him out periodically because I am a professional photographer and whenever I shoot photos of younger children, Fred is always the ice breaker. Tears stop and smiles start!
This book is great.......2006-04-18
I read it over and over and over to my son - who's 11 years old now. He would crack up laughing every time I read it and of crouse had it memorized in no time flat! I think he was really into this book until he was about 3! We saved the book for all those years and were delighted to introduce it to his little sister 2 years ago! She has proven to love the book just as much but she is a little more rough and has torn the book already! :-) so we are ordering another copy and hope to save it for child number 3?? or grandchildren in MANY years to come
Say it again........2004-03-30
Buy this book only if you love the silly little sayings that make your children laugh because the wonderful rhymes in this book will definitely be repeated over & over & over & over. My three year old's favorite is "Take off your Socks, Mr. Fox." and we hear it almost every time he changes clothes. It is a very simple book and very funny. We usually save it for the last story of the night because it is so short.
Most fun book to read on the shelf!.......2002-08-23
You'll find yourself saying "See you later Alligator" to all your work collegues and making up new rhymes with your child.
You don't need the hand puppet for this to be a fun book, so a used copy is a good bet!

Bounce on the bed! Touch the sky! Take a train! Stop for lunch! Make a wish! Acclaimed poet Eve Merriam invites children to enjoy all these marvelous experiences -- and more -- through lively, exuberant verse guaranteed to inspire them to respond to the rhythmic delights of poetry.
Customer Reviews:
A tattered favorite at our house.......2007-02-16
This book delighted my daughter and me all through her toddlerhood. These poems are clever, fun, and evocative. My only complaints: The spine of the paperback didn't hold up well, and the children in the illustrations are nearly all pale, fair-haired waifs, which may reduce the book's appeal for readers whose world is not pale and fair-haired.
...And A Good Time Was Had By All!.......2003-04-03
This book has become an old family friend! I wouldn't characterize it as a bedtime book, because the children quickly memorize these silly poems and "read" along with you, bouncing in rhythm. The book created wonderful family memories; last week my former toddler picked it up from the shelf and read it to me, and we both started giggling again - it's rollicking good fun.
Disappointed.......2001-07-06
With all the attention and honors this book has received, I expected more from it. While the subject matter is valid and the illustrations are delightful, I was disappointed by the forced feeling (irregular rhythms, strong rhymes sporadically spaced) that prevailed throughout it. It was almost as though Merriam was trying too hard to be flamboyant-- nearing overbearance despite all her southern-sounding charm.
This book is a riot!!!.......2001-05-15
This book is so very funny!!! The poems are extremely catchy and adorably cute... this is a must have for all parents with toddlers... the illustrations are not fabulous but are cute enough... My only problem, is these are not sleep motivating!!! They are most definitely JUMP ON THE BED poems!!!
The Best! You be good and I'll be night.......2001-01-17
This is one of the best books of poetry for young children I have ever reviewed. I am an elementary school librarian, and I want this book for all the young children in my life... students and relatives alike. It is a total delight!

Excellent for parent infant/toddlers interaction.......1999-10-08
My daughter Amanda was given this book by a Canadian friend when she was born. I read everyday before nap time starting when she was 3 months old. Even at this early age every page held a tactile activity. Sadly the book was used so much even then and again revitalized when Amanda became a toddler that it became rather ragged. So today I am placing an order for a new book even though my daughter is now 6 because she still holds fond memories.
