Book Description
For almost twenty years, dog owners have turned to this compact guide for sensible, step-by-step advice how to housebreak their beloved pets--in just one week! Now revised and updated, pet expert Shirlee Kalstone's foolproof method for housebreaking your dog is available with a fresh new look and up-to-date information.
Whether your dog is a puppy or getting on in years, whether your goal is to housebreak, paper train, or litter train, this practical, easy-to-follow plan will help you transform your pet into a dependable member of the household--in a way that works with both his innate behavioral instincts and your individual lifestyle. You'll never again have to worry about your dog acting out, feeling anxious or depressed--or ruining your brand-new rug--as you discover:
* The simple secret of successful housebreaking--understanding your dog as a den dweller
* Step-by-step programs tailored to both apartment dwellers and home owners, as well as to people who go to work, versus those who are home all day
* Schedules for training puppies and (re)training adult dogs
* How to identify your dog's natural behavioral rhythms--and use them to your advantage
* How to cope with housebreaking lapses, marking territory, separation anxiety, and health problems
* The power of praise and positive reinforcement, not punishment
Including sample schedules and timetables, and a list of related resources and websites, here is the essential, proven advice that will make training a pleasure, for both you and your dog.
Customer Reviews:
A must have!.......2007-09-16
I have had many dogs, but never a puppy, so I was worried about the housebreaking process. If you follow this book, your puppy will be housebroken! I highly recommend this to any dog owner that needs help in housebreaking!
GREAT SYSTEM!!!.......2007-08-24
My wife and I decided we'd like to have a dog (neither of us had had one before). We researched breeds and a training and settled on a Bishon Frise (playful, great family dogs, but a little stubborn to train) and this book. WOW!!! That's all I have to say.
We followed this book to the T, waited and waited and waited and then all of a sudden it just clicked... Our little man was peeing on his paper. The only thing I'd say is that we'd intermittently walk him outside and now he goes outside if we're walking him, or goes all-day inside on his paper if we need to leave him for a few hours to run errands. We'll even bring him to our friend's house, drop down a newspaper and he'll play all day and when he's ready do his business on the paper. In fact, most of our friends ask (if not encourage us) to bring our little man! I'd highly recommend this book to first-timers.
Follow it to the T, have faith in the system, and you'll see it click. Good luck!!!
More relevant for older pups (12 weeks and up).......2007-05-22
Although the summary and reviews said that this book was good for puppies, it is really meant for older pups (4 months and up). For anyone housebreaking a puppy, most of the puppy books have better information for the younger puppies (8-12 weeks).
house breaking your dog.......2007-05-07
It is a good book to read has alot of good info.
Works, fluff-free.......2007-04-01
Calling this a pamphlet might be generous. The real "Information" you need for a new puppy is about 5 pages. Other sections cover older dogs, etc...
I have lived with and trained dogs all my life. My wife hadn't. I got this book for her since she never listens to a thing I say anyway. The concise, correct advice is easy to read, it just relies on the owner to follow through.
The book tells you how to housetrain a dog. The people who said this book didn't teach them anything.... Did they already know how? Then why buy this book? I've seen too many owners not want to crate their puppies, and refuse to discipline them, if you're not up for being your puppies warden, then you won't like the advice presented within. If you plan to have a long-time companion who is well-adjusted, this book also has great general training tips.
Frankly, I was overjoyed by the book's brevity. I want the info, not fluff and filler. It was very easy to say "Honey, that's 5 pages of instructions that are clearer than what I can tell you, just read it."
A year later, my Dog Ruckus is accident free, I have no fear walking into another person's home, and he pees on command if needed. I only hope Ms. Kalstone writes a book on child rearing sometime soon.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Alexandra Day's modern classic Good Dog Carl has sold more than 200,000 copies, captivating countless readers with the lovable rottweiler Carl, endearing illustrations, and the tale's surprising silliness. The book begins with the mother saying, "Look after the baby, Carl. I'll be back shortly." Let the adventure begin! Carl looks out the window to make sure Mom is gone. Once the coast is clear, the baby crawls out of the crib and onto Carl's back. First stop? Mom's bed. Second stop? The top of the dresser where powder puffs are sported as hats. The infant--now in Carl's capable paws--slides down the laundry chute, swims in the fish tank, dances, raids the refrigerator, and makes a huge mess. Carl dutifully bathes the baby, cleans up the chaos, puts his charge back in the crib, and plays it cool when Mom comes home. "Good dog, Carl!" she says upon her return. A sweet, subtly absurd picture book that jubilantly illustrates the old adage, "When the cat's away, the mice will play." (Picture book)
Book Description
Available in paperback for the first time, the modern classic that introduced the beloved baby-sitting rottweiler to the world.
Customer Reviews:
Good Dog Book.......2007-06-27
This author shows her love and appreciation for a great big rottweiller. It is great to see a rottweiller shown in a positively interacting with a family. This is a must have book for anyone with small children and a beloved rottie.
Fantastic for getting kids talking........2007-06-14
I am a speech language pathologist currently working in a preschool program for children with language and hearing disabilities. Our team has found the Carl books to be a wonderful tool for evaluating and practicing language skills. If SLPs are looking for a good diagnostic tool for narrative and sentance structure, these books are a great way to go. The same holds true for parents who want to encourage expressive language development in their little ones.
PS - None of our clients (and many of them have severe developmental delays) have ever tried to drown themselves in our lobby fish tank. If your child seems inclined to do so, perhaps a lid on the tank would be helpful.
so cute.......2007-05-12
Great book for all ages. You can make up stories for each page as well.
Could Carl Babysit Me?.......2007-02-16
You read this story by reading the highly detailed pictures. The baby climbs out of the crib onto Carl's back. Carl then takes her on many
adventures: climbing onto Mom and Dad's bed, dressing up with Mom's
powder puff and necklace (Carl with a "hat" and necklace on is totally
funny), sliding down the laundry chute "slide", "swimming" in the fish
aquarium. Carl turns on the radio, and they dance in the living room.
Carl and the baby get bread and butter from the refrigerator for a snack.
Carl helps her make chocolate milk. Then he carries her to the bath tub and washes and dries her himself, seeing that she climbs back into the
crib.
Then Carl goes back through the house and cleans up the little
messes they made. When Mom comes home, baby is sleeping in the crib and
Carl is waiting beside it. He looks very submissive, and Mom praises him
for being so good.
This book is a delight because a young child can "read" it all the
years they are pre-reading children. The pictures are delighftully done
and quite detailed, so they can be viewed again and again with interest.
I particularly like it that Carl is portrayed as a gentle, big dog. We
all know some of the "bad dog" breeds can be quite gentle around little
children, and helpful to them, even.
I am glad I found this book and will be giving it to youngsters
as much as I can!!!
I think even the youngest can understand this book is "make believe"
and "baby and Carl couldn't really do these things". I was stopped short
from "riding" my favorite goat by my Dad's instructions. Later when I was
much taller, I figured out I could "ride" her by pretending as I was now
tall enough to not put any weight on her back (which was not a pony's).
I'm noticing the book is dedicated "To H.D., who has never let us
forget about Ponies".
Great little book.......2007-01-14
Love this book, not many words so me and my 2 year can make up a new story every time!!!

Fun for both kids and adults.......2007-09-07
What's not to love about Carl? This is the best of the Carl books, save the original Good Dog Carl. In this book, Carl has to watch the baby and a new puppy in the park. The illustrations are multi-layer -- adults will pick up on things that kids won't (like the different art schools of the painters in the park). Adding the puppy is a fun twist. I was really glad to see this story in a board book for toddlers.
LOVE the Carl books!.......2007-01-18
These are fanatastic books for any child (or adult!) who loves dogs. The illustrations are beautiful, and since the stories are told only in pictures, there is plenty of room for creativity when reading the book with your child(ren).
beautiful, detailed paintings illustrate witty story.......2004-10-21
This is a book for very young children, but the illustrations are so lovely and detailed, and the situations depicted so full of wit and little hidden jokes, that I never get bored with it, even after "reading" it over and over and over again with my toddler. This is my very favorite of the Carl books, because the activities are totally non-materialistic and wholesome (riding a merry-go-round and a train, sharing an ice cream cone, getting sprayed by a hose), and because the park is recognizably inspired by beautiful Balboa Park in my native San Diego, where Alexandra Day lives. It's worth it to get both the board book and regular hardcover editions, just to appreciate the greater detail of the images in the larger format.
And I have to add just one more, mildly tongue-in-cheek comment: as for the "lesbian couple" alluded to in a veiled way by a previous reviewer -- well, I just have to giggle. Yes, there are two young, attractive women having a picnic on the grass as Carl and his charges go by. But it never would have occurred to me to impute homosexuality (or any kind of sexuality) to them. They're fully clothed (albeit in pants), and they're just sitting there -- hardly a lascivious scene no matter what your prejudices. Now if Tinky-Winky were pictured sitting with them, well, that would be a whole different story. I guess this just proves what everyone says is so wonderful about the Carl books -- you can interpret the images however you like.
You can always add your own story.......2004-04-24
Carl is such a great dog, and the pictures are just beautiful.
There is "no" story line with words so you can talk all about what Carl does or you can say as little as you like to.
Great series books!
Wonderful for the imagination.......2004-02-01
I justed picked this book up at the library. I think it's great to have the majority of the book with no words, just gorgeous, colorful pictures. The more detail in the pictures, the better, as my almost-two year old loves to "find things" in them. With no words, he and I can make up our own story, it lets him decide whats happening. I plan to buy a few of the series to have around all the time.

Every year Henry and his dad (with help from Mudge, of course) make Henry's mother a funny lunch for Mother's Day. Shopping for their juicy, crunchy surprise is fun, and preparing it is even more fun. But sharing it with Henry's mother is the most fun of all!
Customer Reviews:
Mothers Day Lunch.......2007-02-09
The attractivness of this story is the special bond that has occurred with Henry and his family. He is so excited about Mothers Day "knowing" that he and dad will take a secret trip to get something special for mom. Arriving home they creatively make something together, that they think mom will just love! Mudge and his appetite just enhance the humor that makes this an all around fun story.
another Henry and Mudge.......2005-09-30
Another Henry and Mudge... we love the series (have everything offered in paperback), but this one wasn't quite up "Henry and Mudge and the Green Time" or "Henry and Mudge and the Happy Cat". My son, nevertheless, wants to make me a funny lunch next Mother's Day. If you love the series, get it. If you are new to Henry and Mudge, start with some of the first books in the series.
Kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch.......2004-06-12
With this Level 2 focus on independent reading skills, kids will more readily move from beginning reader to enjoying more complex tales with paragraphs and short chapters. What better place to start than with Henry and Mudge & The Funny Lunch, Cynthia Rylant's zany story of kids determined to put together the best Mother's Day lunch ever ? against all odds?color drawings add to the appeal.

On a Fourth of July picnic with his human family, McDuff, a beloved but trouble-mongering white terrier, inadvertently allows "silent invaders" (namely, ants) to make off with the entire contents of the lunch basket. Luckily, McDuff has a way with strangers (and their picnic baskets), and in no time flat, he's finagled an invitation from a lonely older man to share his meal with the family.
Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers's series about the earnest pooch and his expanding community of friends and family harkens back to quainter days, when baby carriers were buckled into cars with leather straps and kind gentlemen didn't mind sharing their fried chicken and devil's food cake with strangers. Jeffers's inviting paintings of 1930s cars and fashions, and of course the little white dog himself, are warm and appealing. Readers who loved McDuff Goes to School and McDuff's New Friend will enjoy this summery entry in the series. (Ages 3 to 5) --Emilie Coulter

McDuff Saves the Day.......2007-07-05
As with all 'McDuff' stories, this book is very well drawn, and a child could tell it to an adult based on the pictures in the book, after the child had heard the story a few times. It is charmng, friendly telling of a fun family outing. All McDuff books would be good in daycares for story time!
A Dog's Life: Everything Goes McDuff's Way!.......2005-01-31
McDuff, the irrepressible White Highland Terrier, joins owners Fred, Lucy, and their little baby for a traditional Fourth of July picnic in this immensely satisfying book. Susan Jeffers' beautiful rich colors, blend of comic strip panels and large-format pictures, and attention to period accuracy convincingly portray the post-war patriotism, hope, and economic prosperity of the late 1940's and early 1950's. Her drawings evoke Norman Rockwell, Boy Scout magazines, and the woodblock pictures that graced early children's books, and they are a major factor in the book's huge appeal.
Rosemary Wells once again writes a McDuff series book with humor, warmth, and just a bit of mischief, qualities found in her famous "Max and Ruby" series (e.g., "Max's Dragon Shirt"). There's Lucy and Rick tomfoolery in the opening scenes as McDuff and Fred keep switching seats during the drive. Finally:
"Fred had to sit in the backseat with the baby and the chicken. 'He always gets the front seat in the end,' said Fred. McDuff stretched out in the front seat and fell into a sausage-squirrel dream."
Wells and Jeffers also pull off a clever perspective switch as we see McDuff's version of how the picnic disappeared. In McDuff's version, marauding ants "penetrated the picnic basket by the hundreds. In a few short minutes, the picnic was gone." We see five ants (only 5!) ferreting away a sandwich, and organized, orderly lines of ants absconding with cookies, candy, and cupcakes. Jeffers, as masterful with facial expressions as with large-scale compositions, shows McDuff conveniently looking away, trying hard to look innocent.
And just how does McDuff save the day? By eating the meatballs of neighboring picnicker Mr. DiMaggio. (The authors go a little heavy on an Italian stereotype here.) After DiMaggio yells for help, the family joins him in a generously shared, copious lunch. As now expected from the ever-fortunate dog, McDuff gets a turkey-and tomato sandwich out of it! A glorious fireworks display ends this idyllic Fourth, as Fred, once again, winds up in the front seat. This is an exceptional book, with outstanding pictures, imaginative humor, and a gentle but compelling narrative.
Wells' adorable Westie is a day saver........2003-07-02
I really enjoyed reading this book to 16 preschoolers at the Festus Public Library in Festus, Missouri. As a storytime book, McDuff Saves the Day makes for a fun and entertaining read. The artwork and story are beautiful and creative. The plot is charming, simple and realistic, giving McDuff (a fluffy white Westie) a perfect opportunity to be the cute dog that he is. This is my first McDuff story and I thouroughly enjoyed it. All dog lovers should have this in their children's book collection.
In this adventure, McDuff celebrates the Fourth of July with his family: Lucy, Fred and the baby. A perfect day for a picnic turns into a series of mishaps that leaves the family without a picnic and a cranky baby. By the end of the story, McDuff has found a way to have a picnic and make a new friend. Fred still complains though, because McDuff always gets to ride in the front.
Woa! This book will blow you away!.......2003-04-10
I love this book! I like when McDuff has to sit by the baby then on Lucy's lap and then Fred has to sit in the back seat and McDuff sits in front. My name is Fred and Fred's name is Fred!Mcduff steals everyone's picnic because his picnic was stolen by ants. He steals a man's food so Lucy and Fred come eat with the man and the man isn't lonely and Lucy and Fred get food and watch fire works!
A fun and zany tale.......2002-08-05
Rosemary Wells and Susan Jeffers' McDuff Saves The Day takes place on July 4th and tells of the bouncy dog's plans to celebrate. McDuff's ride in the family car is particularly hilarious and realistic as he bounces between seats, baby, and chicken versus marrowbone. A fun and zany tale.
Book Description
One of the funniest and most astutely observed works on the sexes since James Thurber, How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less Using the Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers (over 207,000 copies in print) turns the often-expressed axiom "Men are dogs" into a howling little handbook on men for contemporary women. Doggie Dos and Don'ts: "Gentle strokes and playful petting techniques are positive motivational techniques for rewarding good behavior." And Flight and Chase Behavior: "If your dog is running away from you, the worst thing to do is chase after him . . . remain calm, act like you're having loads of fun without him, and soon he'll be trotting eagerly back." Doggie Dogmas: "Dogs like to eat out of your plate." "It's pointless to compete for the attention of a dog caught up in a ball game." And a quick primer on personality and temperament, from The Sporting Dog (requires daily exercise, gets bored easily, needs lots of attention) to The Hound (instinctually driven to chase and catch nearly anything that moves). With its tongue-in-cheek humor and illustrations that evoke an old Esquire magazine, How to Make Your Man Behave in 21 Days of Less assures that control will be yours forever, as behavioral problems vanish within twenty-one days. It's guaranteed.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic book.......2007-01-29
So far, I've bought three copies of this book and given two to women friends. Between the writing and the elegant drawings of long-legged beauties and men with tails, one could see this as a tongue in cheek guide to female domination. For example: "From day one, you must seize the leadership role. Remain tough...You must refuse to pet or play with a disobedient dog, resisting the lure of his puppy dog eyes. He'll get the hint who's boss." "Dogs are known for begging and panting over things they're not allowed to have...Familiarize your dog with the following equation: Forbidden Temptation = Intense Emotional Pain." "The most effective method for making a dog do what you want is still the old-fashioned reward system. First, find out what you dog's favorite treats are. Then promise him one of those treats if he does what he's told. Make sure he begs a lot for it first. Note: The extra begging won't help train him any better, but it's fun to watch." I'm a guy who leaves paw prints when he walks, so I enjoyed Ms. Salmansohn's take on male-female relationships. Women hold certain advantages, and this book really plays on them. While this book can certainly be seen as humorous, it also has an unmistakably kinky flavor. Like good fairy tale, it contains a kernel of truth about life.
cracked me up - and I am a guy!.......2005-09-29
Sex in The city humor -- but oddly kinda true. I always kid with girlfriend that guys are dogs -- including me -- so she showed me this book! I definitely got a big laugh from it. Some of it is true about both men and women. The author discusses flight and chase behavior -- when your dog is runing away you dont chase after him because that only makes him run away faster. You just act like youre having fun without him -- and the dog just wants to be where the fun is - so he will return. Good counsel for both sexes.
Offensive Fluff.......2004-12-21
Can you imagine the feedback if this book were titled "How to Make Your WOMAN Behave...Secrets of Professional Dog Trainers"? Especially if it included the same illustrations of demeaning poses, but replaced by females. Think about it, and don't buy in to bashing the opposite sex. Some men may be dogs, but they're still our best friends. :-)
LOVE this book! Great for laughs! Great for a gift!.......2004-12-11
I got this book many years ago ...and still buy it for friends every time I need a gift. Freat give at showers or birthday parties where gifts are opend up in a group setting....everyone always winds up reading it aloud and cracking up! I've since bought a lot of Salmansohn's other books. I totally love her Mr. Right When You Need Him...the dolls that says htings like You look thin, did you lose weight. ...and Can I take you shoe shopping...THIS book/doll also makes a fun gift to give....!

Book Description
No one is more qualified to teach you how to train your dog than Dick Maller, president of the U.S. Professional Dog Trainers' Association and operator of the famous Maller School for Dogs, whose dogs have won over 100 awards and have appeared in movies and on television. Here is his easy-to-follow, effective, and above all, humane approach to training your puppy or full-grown dog in only 21 days. Using "operant conditioning" and "positive reinforcement" as the two basic training techniques, the author shows you:
* how to housebreak your puppy quickly and painlessly
* how to break your dog's bad habits (barking, chewing, chasing cars and bicycles, jumping up on visitors, howling when left alone)
* how to train your dog to follow simple commands (sit, heel, turn, stay, lie down and come)
* how to teach your dog to fetch, jump, catch, carry or retrieve an object.
The simple Maller method is your guide to raising a happy, obedient dog -- one who follows your orders not out of fear (as in traditional training methods), but out of delight in pleasing you -- every time.
Customer Reviews:
Yeah right.......2007-07-05
Bought the book, was skeptical, and I turned out to be right. I couldn't teach my adult dog how to behave in 21 days unless I had all day every day to devote to it. It might work for some people, but not for me.
Good To Have.......2007-06-02
I used this book, in conjunction with other training materials. It's useful, but I wouldn't rely on it as my sole training guide. I used it to get a basic idea of how to train my dog once we had passed the 8mo. mark and were basically doing OK.
Didnt like this book.......2006-03-03
I did not like this book at all. It states to wait for the puppy to do the wanted action and praise the puppy. That to me does not seem like the way to train a puppy. I have ordered the dog whisperer video and am hoping for better results.
3 dogs ... quarter of a century! still perfect!.......2005-03-24
I first purchased this booking the late 70s or early 80s. If I recall correctly, it was on the "suggested" table at a local bookshop in the Hamptons.
Ah yes... the 1980s! In finance, Ivan Boesky personified the times of "live big, show off." At the movies ET phoned home, Peggy Sue got Married. The toys to own were a Rubik cube and Pac man.
Those icons are long gone ...yet this little book has survived! Ain't life strange?
Well since that time (almost thirty years ago) I've had two more dogs and two more wives.
I got my latest dog last month. Once again I went back to this "21 days" classic book. After all it kept me in good stead through "Buffy" and "Charlie" and now is being reread for use with "Trumper" (the dog not the Donald).
I see why this has survived almost thirty years on the Simon & Schuster backlist as well as more than thirty five printings in five different editions and four languages. It is a true classic.
This is the one book to buy to train your new pup or old dog. It is brilliant in its absolute simplicity.
I'm not sure this book actually needed one more review. However, there are very few things in my life that (a) I liked in 1980 and still like (b) that survived from 1980 and (c) that cost under $10.00 yet has brought so much joy.
It belongs in every doggie persons library.
This is the best!.......2004-09-22
No ifs, ands or (none housebroken) butts ... this is the best dog training book I've ever seen. It did take me more than 21 days (more like 42 days). However, considering my earlier training attempts fell on deaf ears (I thought dogs have really good hearing) ... I am thrilled. The best ten bucks I've ever spent. Get this book ... from amazon, the library or a friend. These guys really know howw to train dogs. Or actually they know how to train layman to train dogs!

Let's celebrate Mother's Day, Biscuit!
There are so many ways to make Mom feel special. Pull back the big flaps to see the surprises Biscuit and the little girl have in store for Mom!
Customer Reviews:
Biscuit Loves Mother's Day.......2007-06-12
I believe that all the Biscuit books are written very well and I know that my child loves them all. This book shows how the little girl and her dog Biscuit prepare for Mother's Day. It is written very well and I would recommend it to anyone with small children.
Right To the Point.......2005-07-28
Another Biscuit holiday flap book that gets right to the point. This time it is Mother's Day and The-Girl-In-Purple-Sneakers and Biscuit are going to make it a special day for Mom and show how much they care. Gifts are made, Mom seeps in, and a special breakfast in bed are just the beginning of Mom's special day.
The book is packed with the typically adorable artwork that has been a backbone to the Biscuit series. The end flaps reveal what Biscuit is up to in his usual puppyish ways. All in all another good holiday book that is attractive and fun to read.

Smaller Size Detracts.......2007-08-16
My almost 2-year old daughter loves the Carl books. I don't really like these smaller board books as much as the large hardcover books that we have, but she doesn't seem to mind the difference and carries the board books around with her.
Carl Goes Shopping.......2007-01-09
Great book. My three-year-olds have loved it for at least a year, especially enjoying that the store has an elevator and pet and toy sections as well. Seems to appeal to a wide developmental range.
my son loves this book.......2006-11-10
Alexandra Day's illustrations transport us into a beautiful world of childhood. My two and a half year old loves all the Carl books. The trouble Carl and the baby get into in the store in this one makes him laugh hysterically.
Strange books.......2006-10-27
My daughter likes the pictures, but the storyline is wierd. I just don't like a story about a mother that leaves her infant alone in public in the care of her dog. I also don't like images of a baby riding on the dog's back (and even standing on, in one of the other books), I certainly wouldn't want my child to think she could try that with our Rottie. I know it is a kid's book, and supposed to be cute, but I just don't like the Carl books, and I don't think they send a good message about proper child care at all.
My son's favorite Carl book.......2006-07-19
I just pulled our collection of board books out of the attic to clean up for my youngest child. "Carl Goes Shopping" was obviously my son's favorite of his four "Carl" books - it was bent, chewed, food splattered, and basically loved to tatters. I intrepret this condition as a strong recommendation from a toddler. I decided to just throw it out and buy a new copy for my daughter!
