Book Description

They’re the legal world’s oddest couple—a shorts-and-sandals beach bum and a Coral Gables blue blood. Maybe the only thing keeping them from killing each other is that they’re on the same side.…

It starts with a 300-pound marlin stuck in his front door. Even by South Florida standards, where murderers outnumber mosquitoes, this registers as weird. And it’s not long before Steve Solomon figures out who’s making the bizarre threats. But how can he explain to his partner why an ex-client wants him dead? Victoria Lord was used to Steve’s cutting legal corners to win, but breaking the law to lose was downright unethical, even for Steve. Now Solomon & Lord is being bashed on local radio and a celebrity shrink with a homicidal me-first philosophy wants to be Steve’s new best friend. With a killer on the loose and legal disaster looming, is Steve’s lover and law partner about to walk out on him? Is this the end of Solomon & Lord?

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious but also a bit predictable in spots.......2007-04-25

I have enjoyed the previous two books in this series, and I enjoyed this one as well, but I did find that at times I could almost predict the dialogue and action in this one.

This is book three in the Solomon and Lord series, and it picks up with Steve and Vickie engaged but struggling to find common ground when it comes to making choices about their future as a couple. That's not surprising, considering how different their respective characters are, but it's not as hilarious a conflict as I'd have expected it to be.

Steve is Steve. He wears t-shirts that make you laugh sometimes and want to kick him in the toches others. He's still the kind of guy who acts like the law is a bit more flexible than Vickie thinks it is, and he's still the loving parent to his nephew, who creates really wicked anagrams in a nanosecond or two.

Vickie is still stuck in the pattern of expecting Steve to be someone he's not, and Steve is still stuck in the pattern of expecting to be accepted precisely as he is without having to make changes to accomodate a romantic partnership.

That stuff is very predictable, as is some of the mystery itself.

What's good about this particular book in the series is the way that Steve's sister gets brought in, her act fairly cleaned up, and Steve's dad becomes the source of much humor as he becomes ultra-Jewish, much to Steve's consternation. The mystery is okay--one of Steve's ex-clients is after him because Steve basically broke all sorts of attorney-client rules in order to get him found guilty a few years back. In the course of dealing with his now-free ex-client, Steve must solve a mystery involving pedophilia, and this part of the book is fairly decently done.

The ending is a bit pat for my taste, but it was funny enough.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read.

3 out of 5 stars Victoria Vacillates...Again.......2007-04-04

The mismatched pair of Solomon and Lord is back for their third installment, this time dealing with a murderous ex-client of Steve's. Years ago when Steve was representing Dr. Bill Kreeger on a murder charge, he found evidence of just how cold and sociopathic the doctor was, and did something a little unethical to get him put away. Now Dr. Kreeger is a radio shrink, and keeps lambasting Steve on the air, when he isn't going out of the way to be Steve's best buddy. Steve's partner in law and life, Victoria Lord, is disgusted with Steve's lack of ethics and starts to worry she may be doing the wrong thing moving in with him. Plus, Steve's nephew Bobby is hitting puberty, and along with his interest in girls, Bobby also wants to rekindle a relationship with his drug-addled, abusive mother. While Steve does mental battle with Dr. Kreeger, he keeps getting arrested for assault--on the radio. Will he be able to hold it all together and put Dr. Kreeger back behind bars, or will he wind up there himself?

While it has its share of chuckles and great, quotable lines (I love Solomon's Laws), the main story about Steve's struggle with Dr. Kreeger takes a backseat to matters between Steve and Victoria. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, except it's just a rehash of exactly what went on between Victoria and Steve in their last book, The Deep Blue Alibi. Victoria vacillating over whether being with Steve is the right thing or not wasn't all that entertaining the first time around, and this time it really made the book drag. Steve's fears over losing Bobby are getting a little stale, too. It was hard to enjoy the author's wit while hoping the story would move along already. Steve is not the typical male lead, behaving irresponsibly and sometimes childishly, but that's his charm. Somehow, this guy who does everything the wrong way manages to get it right. In this book, however, Steve seems to be at a loss as to what's going on around him, and it just doesn't fit with his character. When things work themselves out in the end, it's more dumb luck than any planning on Steve's part.

This is a series definitely worth reading...so far. However, the author really needs to move things along between Steve and Victoria. Surely there must be some way to make the differences in the way they operate into a good plot, without having them wonder if they belong together...again. There is a good cast of eclectic characters here, between Steve and Victoria, Steve's dad, Victoria's mother, and Bobby, not to mention the colorful side characters. It's a shame they keep rehashing the same story, but I'll read at least one more Solomon vs. Lord novel before I give up.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as good as its predecessors.......2007-02-03

Steve Solomon is beset on a number of fronts in Kill All the Lawyers, the third installment in Paul Levine's series of legal whodunits. The most worrying of his concerns is that a certain Dr. William Kreeger--former client, celebrity psychiatrist, and sociopath--is out of prison and out to punish Steve for having lost his case. Meanwhile, Steve's father, disgraced judge Herbert T. Solomon, has gone Orthodox. Steve's sister Janice has found Jesus in rehab. And Steve's nephew Bobby has found the "harlot-in-training" down the street. To top it off, Victoria Lord, Steve's law partner and lover, is having doubts about their relationship. She spends most of this book agonizing over her decision to move in with him.

Steve has found a worthy nemesis in his Dr. Phil-ish celebridoc, whose motives remain a mystery for the better part of the book. Ultimately Kreeger's story merges nicely with those of Bobby and Bobby's mother--who has shown up in Miami with her own brand of menace, the threat of removing Bobby from Steve's care. But it's unfortunate that Victoria takes a back seat in this one. Her relationship with Steve is less interesting here than in previous outings. Too little is made of Herbert Solomon, too, who shows up now and again to spout some Yiddishism and then exits the story. On a brighter note, there is some nice development in the relationship between Steve and Victoria's mother Irene, a woman at once magisterial and tawdry--and with a penchant for naked display. We watched Irene cavort naked poolside in Deep Blue Alibi. This time around, alas, we are made to look on as she splays her legs for an intimate waxing. The scene falls short of funny and into the realm of the shudder-inducing.

Kill All the Lawyers seems a little stale in comparison with the first two books in the series, the characters often more cartoonish than not. I'm hoping the next outing finds them a bit more nuanced than they were allowed to be here.

5 out of 5 stars Isn't it romantic?.......2007-01-22

Though I've not really researched the topic, my guess is that the first mystery solving couple appeared in Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man. Subsequent to Nick and Nora Charles, there have been all sorts of mysteries featuring couples; probably the most popular one currently going is Faye Kellerman's series with Peter and Rina Decker. Kellerman should watch out, however: Paul Levine's series featuring Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord is good enough to give the Deckers a run for their money.

Kill All The Lawyers is the third in the "Solomon vs. Lord" series. In this novel, an old misdeed of Steve's has come back to haunt him. There was one time when he purposely lost a case; victory would have been simple, but he knew his client was guilty of multiple murders. Now, six years later (after serving a sentence for involuntary manslaughter), William Kreeger is out of prison and out for revenge.

Kreeger was a popular psychiatrist who was a darker version of Dr. Phil. Preaching a philosophy of selfishness (that even includes a very loose definition of justifiable homicide), he had parlayed his fame into big bucks and even after his prison time, he is able to have a radio show, which he uses to verbally attack Steve. Steve knows that Kreeger wants revenge, but even he can't guess at how sinister Kreeger's scheme will be, nor the depths of evil that Kreeger is capable of.

Meanwhile, Steve's lover and law partner Victoria is forced to question both Steve's ethics and his commitment to their relationship. Steve can be a great guy, but he's also a big-time flake, and their personalities definitely are opposites. Uptight Victoria needs to loosen up and ultra-casual Steve needs to be a little more dependable. As Steve watches his life unravel through Kreeger's manipulations, even Victoria begins to question Steve's approach to things.

One of the strengths of these books is that Levine realizes that - although these are books about a couple - he doesn't need to balance things equally between the two. Steve Solomon is the more interesting character (in some ways, an updated version of Levine's previous series character Jake Lassiter), so Levine writes more about him than Victoria. Although I felt that Levine fell off his stride a bit in his previous book (the good but not great Deep Blue Alibi), he is back to his full excellence here with a novel that is both suspenseful and quite funny and a good recommendation for fans of crime fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Good.......2007-01-19

As usual, I wasn't disappointed by Paul Levine. I can't wait for his next Solomon v. Lord book to be published, so I stared reading his earlier Jake Lassiter novels. Very entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars The Deep Blue Alibi: A Solomon vs. Lord Novel.......2007-07-14

The Deep Blue Alibi is the sequel to Solomon vs. Lord. In the first book readers met Victoria Lord, an uptight by the book kind of lawyer, who through a series of hilarious twists and bizarre turns finds herself partnered with Steve Solomon, another lawyer who plays by his own rules, to defend a murder case. As the team have almost no evidence, they have to be rather creative in their defence.

In this book, Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord are preparing for another very difficult murder case. In this case, there seems to be more potential murder suspects and too many leaps of faith for the team's comfort. Worse yet, one of these potential suspects is one of Victoria's old flames.

I absolutely loved Solomon vs. Lord. The book was interwoven with various sub-stories and subplots; the characters were clever with amazing chemistry; and the ridiculous events surrounding the actual murder trial were hilarious because they were so realistic. I didn't really expect that the sequel could stand up to my high expectations after the first book yet I actually think I enjoyed The Deep Blue Alibi more that the original book. I think that in already knowing the characters, the depth of their sarcasm, wit, and ability to always get them into strange situations added even greater depth and enjoyment to the story. It's also kind of nice to see that happily ever after never quite looks like what you expected.

5 out of 5 stars Boom!! 2 great books in a row!!.......2007-07-13

Almost, but not quite as good as the first book. But it would be hard to compete with the first one because everything is new and exciting and we are getting to know the characters, etc. But this 2nd story is filled with hilarious lines, and maintains an excellent plot with suspense and emotion.

He's not going to win any literary prizes with these, but I hope he's making a nice living. Each is a fun read. Funny is hard.

4 out of 5 stars If the facts don't fit the law- bend the facts.......2007-06-03

This novel has been compared to John Grisham and Carl Hiaasen, but actually doesn't quite meet the standard of either of the two gentlemen. Truth be told, it ends a lot better than Grisham's latest novels, but the legal part of the story is a pale comparison, and although humor is used extensively, it lacks the edge of Hiaasen and is somewhat repetitive.

The legal team of Solomon (Steve) and Lord (Victoria) are all at sea when a runaway powerboat almost runs them over. It turns out that one of the occupants has a spear sticking out of his chest, and the other is a family friend of Victoria's and their next client. The case takes an environmental twist, not because of the greenbacks blowing across the lobster strewn beach, but due to their client's ambitious plan to build a floating casino on top of a coral reef.

There are several people with a vested interest in getting the casino built, and even more who think the plan should be scuttled and sunk, but the stakes get even higher when someone tries to scare the antiheroes off the case. Red herrings swim through the pages when secrets from the past are unearthed, old flames still carry torches, and meetings are conducted at an exclusive club for the rich and toned, but the biggest obstacle the duo face is their inability to get along.

That's it in a nutshell, ignoring the product placements for Manolo Blahnik, Speedo and the music of Jimmy Buffett. The plot is stretched to breaking point, and you get the impression that hidden within this 467 page novel is a 200 page novella struggling to make a name for itself. Overblown, yet not without its flashes of brilliance, this one is at the heavy end of light reading.

CELL MATES

The man in the holding cell loosened his tie, tossed his rumpled suit coat into a corner, and stretched out on the hard plastic bench. The woman in the facing cell slipped out of her glen plaid jacket, folded it carefully across an arm, and began pacing.

"Relax, Vickie. We're gonna be here a while," the man said.

"Victoria," the woman corrected. Her angry footsteps echoed off the bare concrete floor.

"Wild guess. You've never been held in contempt before."

"You treat it like a badge of honor."

"A lawyer who's afraid of jail is like a surgeon who's afraid of blood," Steve Solomon said.

"From what I hear, you spend more time behind bars than your clients," Victoria Lord said.

"Hey, thanks. Great tag line for my radio spots. 'You do the crime, Steve does the time.' "

"You're the most unethical lawyer I know."

"You're new at this. Give it time."

"Sleazy son-of-a-bitch," she muttered, turning away.

"I heard that," he said.

Nice profile, he thought. Attractive in that polished, cool-as-a-daiquiri way. Long legs, small bust, sculpted jaw, an angular, athletic look. Green eyes spiked with gray and a tousled, honey-blond bird's nest of hair. Ballsy and sexy, too. He'd never heard "sleazy son-of-a-bitch" sound so seductive.

"If you weren't so arrogant," he said, "I could teach you a few courtroom tricks."

"Save your breath for your inflatable doll."

"Cheap shot. That was a trial exhibit."

"Really? People have seen the doll in your car. Fully inflated."

"It rides shotgun so I can use the car-pool lane."

She walked toward the cell door. Shadows of the bars pin-striped her face. "I know your record, Solomon. I know all about you."

"If you've been stalking me, I'm gonna get a restraining order."

"You make a mockery of the law."

"I make up my own. Solomon's Laws. Rule Number One: 'When the law doesn't work, work the law.' "

"They should lock you up."

"Actually, they already have."

"You're a disgrace to the profession."

"Aw, c'mon. Where's your heart, Vickie?"

"Victoria! And I don't have one. I'm a prosecutor."

"I'll bet you think Jean Valjean belonged in prison."

"He stole the bread, didn't he?"

"You'd burn witches at the stake."

"Not until they exhausted all their appeals." She laughed, a sparkle of electricity.

Damn, she's good at this.

Fending off his mishegoss, trumping his insults with her own. Something else appealed to him, too. No wedding band and no engagement ring. Ms. Victoria Lord, rookie prosecutor, seemed to be unattached as well as argumentative. Maybe twenty-eight. Seven years younger than him.

"If you need any help around the courthouse," he said, "I'd be willing to mentor you."

"Is that what they're calling it these days?"

Touche. But she'd said it with a smile. Maybe this wasn't so much combat as foreplay. Another parry, another thrust, who knows? The more he thought about it, the more confident he became.

She likes me. She really likes me.

I hate him.

I really hate him, Victoria decided.

Dammit, she'd been warned about Solomon. He always tested new prosecutors, baited them into losing their cool, lured them into mistrials. And she wasn't totally "new." She'd handled arraignments and preliminary hearings for eight months. And hadn't she won her first two felony trials? Of course, neither one had involved Steve Slash-and-Burn Solomo

Unlike most reviewers of this book, I do not generally like courtroom drama/novels/etc. But this book is something else.

The story doesn't make the novel. In fact, it's fairly forgettable. The writing is just over-the-top witty, clever, and engaging. I don't remember the last time I laughed out loud so many times while reading a book.

Anyone looking to branch out their reading list would like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Lawyers do it in their briefs.......2007-07-24

Attorney-cum-author Paul Levine (who also penned the Jake Lassiter series, very much worth looking into) came out with this hilarious and tongue in cheek legal thriller in 2005 and made me laugh all the way thru the reading of it. SOLOMON VS. LORD, the first in a four book series (and counting), introduces two tremendously appealing characters, Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, who, in their give-no-quarter squabbling, contentious romancing, and mismatched courtroom styles, are guaranteed to hook you in way past the time you should've been a-snoring.

The novel begins with rookie prosecutor Victoria Lord and maverick defense attorney Steve Solomon cooling their heels in the clink, having both just been cited with contempt of court. Naturally, they grate on each other's nerves, with Steve being smugly insufferable and Victoria being stuffy, indignant, and unwilling to succumb to his low class charm. Victoria is uptight, upscale, and by-the-book. The borderline seedy Steve - of Stephen Solomon & Associates (although, there are no associates) - likes to play fast and loose with the law and even espouses his own set of rules, calling them Solomon's Laws, and making his secretary type them up for posterity. Later on, thanks to a nervy parrot, Steve causes Victoria to be ignominously fired by the D.A while still in the courtroom. Needless to say, she's got her hate on for him.

With the option of taking a namby-pamby private counseling gig in her fiance's business empire, Victoria opts to instead open her own private practice. With her uptown connections, she has the inside line on an upcoming, high profile case involving a just deceased 60-year-old construction magnate and his possibly floozy, much younger wife, who is accused of murdering her hubby during a kinky how-do-you-do. Steve, who feels a tad guilty for Victoria having been so brutally dismissed but with his eyes still calculatingly on the prize, manages to weasel himself into a working partnership with Victoria for this one particular case, much to her shock and consternation.

As the new (and temporary) firm of Solomon & Lord tries to get their client off, Steve also finds himself embroiled in a bitter custody battle for his 11-year-old, lived-in nephew, the precocious but damaged Bobby. And, believe me, Paul Levine writes the Family Services' consultant (and Steve's nemesis) as a woman cut from the same mold as Dolores Umbrage, though not as polite. This book being also a romance, Steve and Victoria rapidly begin to have unlawyerly feelings for each other. But Steve is immature and Victoria is already engaged to the perfect man, who's also the Avocado King of Florida, which really isn't as sexy as it sounds. Anyway, no dearth of self-doubting and heartfelt yearning in these pages.

There are so many things going for this book. The beautiful but fastidious Victoria is a nice enough character, but the magic in this series lies in Steve Solomon, a scoundrel with integrity and a soul. Levine surrounds them with a picturesque supporting cast: from Steve's buffed-out secretary Cece, to his geriatric court groupies and airhead model clients, to Victoria's bawdy best friend Jackie, to Steve's southern gentleman of a dad. And then there's young Bobby, stricken with some form of high-functioning savant autism and whose one of many talents includes fabricating anagrams on the spot. Steve's fond and carefree relationship with Bobby is the element which humanizes this sharky lawyer the most to the readers and which makes softies like me go "Awww." Guy even lets his nephew read Playboy. If my uncle had done that for me when I was a kid, he would've been forever gold in my book.

Then, there's the witty and sometimes risque banter between Vic and Steve. I'll fall in line with the others who've mentioned that this series echoes MOONLIGHTING best in irreverent tone and daffy but sexy romantic complications. Too, having the book take place in the Sunshine State lends a sundrenched and laid back feel to the proceedings. Steve's courtroom antics might drive his opponents nuts, but they provide fun fodder for us. There's even a certain amusement to be derived from Victoria's constant state of bemusement at Steve's stunts.

The courtroom stuff is decent enough, with some colorful judges thrown in (I particularly liked the judge who reads legal thrillers as he presides in court). But, let's face it, the heart of the book is the wacky, adversarial pairing of Steve and Victoria. I'm an off and on reader of the legal thriller, but characters like them are just too good to not read and enjoy. I've already read the three sequels (The Deep Blue Alibi: A Solomon vs. Lord Novel, Kill All the Lawyers (Solomon Vs. Lord Novels), and Trial & Error) and I can confidently say that the quality doesn't slack off and that growth does happen with these two, and with Bobby. If you haven't checked out their series yet, you're truly missing out on some good romance and serious yuks.

5 out of 5 stars Solomon vs. Lord.......2007-07-14

Victoria Lord has never met a man more irritating. The normally put together lawyer sits in a jail cell with a contempt of court ruling all because of Steve Solomon, his taunting, and his ability to get her hopping mad. How dare he give her advice about how to become a better lawyer when he can't keep himself out of jail. A strange twist of fate, one very bizarre murder trial, one custody battle, and a new outlook will either destroy Victoria's career or give her the life she's always wanted. One thing is for sure, Victoria's life is never going to be the same.

Solomon vs. Lord contains a number of sub-stories and mini-plots that add to the brilliance and depth of the main story. The events surrounding the murder trial are downright hilarious yet the characters have to build a case out of almost no evidence which creates a lot of tension and frustration. The side story about Steve's nephew is touching and inspirational despite it's horrific nature showing a side that no one would have guessed that Steve Solomon could possess. Victoria has her own stories and her own issues particularly with her vegetable obsessed fiancée.
