5 out of 5 stars An excellent preparation and problem-solving guide .......2005-05-07

An award finalist for ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year, New Menopausal Years The Wise Woman Way: Alternative Approaches for Women 30-90 is an introduction to dealing with myriad problems resulting from menopause, preferrable without relying on medicines but rather natural nutritional remedies and supplements. Newly revised and expanded with 100 additional pages on thyroid health, problems with hair, fertility after forty, memory problems, fibromyalgia and more, New Menopausal Years is an excellent preparation and problem-solving guide that taps directly into the experience of women, for women. New Menopausal Years does not replace the diagnosis, prescriptions, or treatment of a professional doctor for serious health problems, but rather shines as a resource for preventative nutritional and herbal advice, and tips for alleviating common discomforts.

5 out of 5 stars Menopause as Metamorphosis.......2004-11-23

I teach workshops on yoga and menopause and this is one of the books I recommend most enthusiastically to women going through the Change. Susun Weed describes menopause as a metamorphosis, a complete change at the cellular level, when a woman changes from one person to another, similar to the dramatic change that occurs during puberty. Susun and other holistic healers who have studied the ancient women's mysteries remind us of the power and initiation potential of the two life events unique to women: menstruation and menopause. She views the menopausal years as the years of transformation from a potential mother to Wise Woman elder or crone. I read the first edition of this book during my perimenopausal years back in the 90's and now at age 55, officially on my postmenopausal journey, I continue to find little nuggets of wisdom that help me to honor and understand the profound changes my body and psyche are going through.

5 out of 5 stars Susun Weed is a blessing to us all.......2004-09-08

Susun has presented a clear guide for any womyn going through menopause. I had the oppertunity to read this book at a small shop in Michigan and bought presented it to my mother who was experiencing menopause. I would have to say that this book is truly needed in a world where quick fix white pills are the answer for most womyn. Maybe they too will discover this fine fine book.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST GUIDES ON NATURAL ALTERNATIVES TO HRT.......2003-11-14

When I was going through all the changes and symptoms several years ago every book I found on the subject of menopause was written in the 50s or 60s by male doctors (their only advice was to take Hormone Replacement Therapy). After searching the library and so many book stores over months I finally found this book. It has been a life saver and given me the tools and information to deal with this transition we women must all go through. I have given copies of this book to relatives and friends and I am now buying Susun Weed's other books. Even if you're not yet experiencing perimenopause or menopause it's good to read it prepare yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the "alternative' mom.......2006-08-28

If you are into herbs and natural health and pregnant or thinking about getting pregnant this is a must read! Full of wonderful information and very well written. Was my favorite book during pregnancy and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Good book about herbal childbearing.......2006-06-16

I really found this book useful. I've had it for many years and was looking for an herbal book for childbearing when I got it. I have several herb books but like the fact that this one zeros in on one subject. I wasn't really interested in the part about aborting babies, though. All in all, the book is very readable and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any woman who is expecting........2006-03-14

I just ordered two copies of this wonderful book for my office. I have a small healing center and women who come to me are into a more holistic and natural way to experience pregnancy and childbirth. This book is a wonderful friend to keep handy throughout your pregnancy and birthing experience. Ms. Weed lists a number of herbal preparations to use for the varying issues that come up during the 'waiting' period and the birthing also. Try it....

4 out of 5 stars This is a must have in your herbal library.......2007-09-23

Anyone interested in herbalism in any way needs to read this book. Susun is most definately a grandmother of herbalism to the next generations that follow the herbal ways.
Susun is delightful in her writing and is also very public about everything she writes about. Truly teaching us about the herbs themselves and how to apply them.

I got a bit confused on her way of describing dandelion in her french accent writing about the plant, but now that I have been exposed to a french teacher, I am more comfortable with understanding this section of the book and should re read it.

But that is Susun's playful style and how the plants are in relation to her.

If you practice herbalism in any degree, this is a must have book.

5 out of 5 stars Healing Wise .......2007-07-16

Wise Woman Herbal: Healing Wise looks at health and healing from a completely different perspective than any other resource I've ever consulted. Instead of looking at illness as something needing medication (as in western scientific medicine) or as the result of some sort of bodily imbalance (as in traditional eastern medicine), this book looks at illness as an opportunity.

At first, I have to admit that this concept sounded really strange to me. What sort of opportunity is suffering from Chronic Fatigue or having to deal with the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis? However, as I continued through the thorough and easy to understand explanations of the wise woman tradition, I began to understand more about the principles behind optimum nourishment.

Basically, this concept requires that we learn to take care of, accept, learn from and love ourselves at every point in our life process. To do so, brings about change and further opportunities to nourish our being. Thus, if we have an illness in the traditional sense, then we need to take the opportunity to learn about ourselves and fully nurture our being before we can ever hope to release the seemingly negatives aspects of the situation.

Wise Woman Herbal: Healing Wise has me intrigued with the wise woman tradition. I find the concept of a spiral healing pattern (as opposed to the linear pattern of western medicine and the circular pattern of traditional eastern medicine) fascinating. I also like that this book gave me a distinctly different way to think about my health. I am extremely eager to learn more about this tradition.

5 out of 5 stars Back to Basics.......2006-09-13

This is a wonderful book filled with wisdom and love. The author has presented the reader with a simple, clear cut, and hands on approach to herbalism. The reader is presented with the 3 traditions of healing, scientific, heroic, and wisewoman. After reading this book I decided to get involved in naturopathic medicine and stay clear of the scientific and heroic traditions of healing. Susun Weed has such an apporach to her writing, reading the book makes you feel like she is by your side guiding your hand as you prepare your simples. This is truly a book to cherish through out the years.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Grass Roots Reference.......2006-08-11

Susun Weed is the BOMB. I especially appreciated the quick response to the questions I posted at the website when I used her recipes for making tinctures. There is something to be said for her stance on no licensing for herbalists. She holds no certifications having had her education in herbalism in a life long pursuit of the path. I would trust her word over a certified herbalist any day simply because she practices and lives by what she writes about. A wonderful resource for those of us growing older. I am ten years post hysterectomy and the ovaries are starting to fluctuate. The tinctures that she profiles in this book went a long way to addressing the specific complaints I was having without having to go look for 'menopause' formulas. Supplementing the things your body needs as its ability to produce them naturally declines will go a long way towards easing the transition into Cronehood.
Buy the book, it's wonderfully informative AND entertaining. Get all her other books while you're at it!

Designed to be a resource for both women who want to maintain breast health and those who've been diagnosed with breast cancer, Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way draws on "women's wisdom," or the inner knowledge often ignored by modern medicine, as a powerful tool for healing. Author Susun Weed proposes an anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms "Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.

Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating quotes from centuries-old books on healing.

Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided. She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes, paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.

The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen, and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index are included.

Book Description

Foods, exercises, and attitudes to keep your breasts healthy. Supportive complimentary medicines to ease side-effects of surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or tamoxifen. Foreword by Christiane Northrup, M.D.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Must Have read for women!.......2005-11-18

I found Susan Weed after suffering for over 6 painful months with a very painful breast cyst and took painkillers that didn't help me at all and after trying the hot Ginger Compresses for less than a week I was able to get off of the useless painkillers and get back to a normal life again! I am so thankful to this book for making me feel better. I liked the book so much I became a student of Susan's.

A woman's breast health is her life and I thank you personally Susan for making me feel so much better. Truely a gift for sharing with others!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Market!.......2002-11-13

Whether you or perhaps a friend or family member have had breast cancer, or you are a woman, period, this is a book you should have in your personal library. Author Susun Weed brings you every step of the way in breast health, which modern medicines and practitioners tend to either ignore or not explore.

Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way is the first step to wellness and staying healthy. Author Susun Weed has certainly done her homework, with research and a natural lifestyle. She begins with a small personal story and the awakening from it, which leads to the disclosure of her anti-cancer lifestyle, a one page insight of balance and harmony, then ends this section with a how-to on using this book, about herbs and their dangers.

She begins her chapters with the statistics of breast cancer and how they make her feel, how it makes us all feel. She leaves nothing out with her research with complete scientific data and what is accepted in the medical society and what may be likely but not proven. She explores every angle in a not so easy subject.

Moving on to "Can Foods Prevent Cancer?" Again she has done her homework and provided a wealth of information on anti cancer foods, she explores foods, herbs, oils, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. In "Taking Our Breasts into Our Own Hands, Breast Self Massage", Ms. Weed goes far beyond just the how-to that we so often get from our Doctors and clinics, thoroughly discussing the many aspects of self-breast exam, including an extensive list and uses of different oils.

As you make your way to the following chapters, you begin to expect much more from her. This is exactly what she gives you! With "Building Powerful Immunity, Journey to the Wise Healer Within", " Mammograms -Who Needs Them?" and the last of the first Section "There's a Lump in my Breast!", she brings you completely full circle as she delves into each of these subjects.

Section two has some of the scariest of topics, but the author gently eases your anxiety as if she is right beside you holding your hand, letting you know you are not alone by exploring every aspect of having Breast Cancer. From "What is Breast Cancer? The Diagnosis", dealing with your emotional state, to "Choosing Surgery Questions to Ask," the topics just continue to flow to give you a complete in-depth exploration, with recipes, suggestions and what to expect no matter what you decide. She gives you extensive resource lists on just about every topic. This book is not a get healed fast pill, but instead an exploratory journey, on one of the most feared and extended taboo subjects in our time. Through it all Susun reminds you; this is Your Life, take control!

Hail to Susun Weed who has brought the light in an age of darkness with this book! Every Clinic, Gynecologist and Oncologist worth their weight should read, then recommend "Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way," to all their patients. I give this wonderful archive of information my highest of recommendations!

5 out of 5 stars An empowering, well-researched book........2000-07-18

Finally a book that gives women practical direction on how to facilitate breast health and how to deal with suspicious lumps. The medical community offers us mammograms and biopsies, but the gaps between these procedures are often filled with agonizing uncertainty for most women. Thank you Ms. Weed, for giving us the information we have so desperately needed to be able channel our energies into strengthening our bodies and empowering our spirits.

1 out of 5 stars a misguided approach to a serious disease with mistatements.......1999-10-13

There may be some useful information in this book but her statements about mammograms pushing cancer cells into other parts of the body have no validity and no scientific proof. She is promoting some dangerous thinking that ignores the advances that have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Do not let this be the only book you read on the subject!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for women and girls!.......1999-04-17

Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way by Susun Weed is a significant contribution to the state of women's health. She has woven statistics, research results, myths and facts into a fabric that is warm and inviting. Her style of injecting motherly and grandmotherly wisdom while sharing facts is very effective. She certainly helped me to accept that breast health is important and more than correct brassiere fitting. I received the book from a friend a few days after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I curled up with the book and read for hours, absorbing the spiritual soothing of the letters from the "grandmothers". I was challenged to rethink what I had already experienced and where I should step next. For instance had I read Weed's book prior to the diagnostic tests, I would not have submitted to a mammogram, clearly less than six months after a previous one. I would have requested an ultrasound, since the fact of the lump had already been established. The book encouraged me to slow down and think about optons and my direction. It made me know that I was not foolish in thinking that I could choose a way that would enhance my natural healing capacities rather than compromise them. It has been invaluable as a resource during my journey. The cancer-free lifestyle outline was formidable and empowering. The levels and types of breast cancer that Weed explained equipped me to understand pathology reports and information given in consultations with surgeons and oncologists. I realized gaps in nutritional information, since I was not aware of the many cancer-fighting foods and enzymes. The book encouraged me to reassess my eating habits and to become more serious about my diet. Weed also very ably handles the existing options for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Although she is very clearly a proponent of holistic approaches to healing, she makes the women who would choose the conventional approaches know that their decisions are personal and to be respected. There is no intense politicizing of the issues such that women will feel ashamed or less than courageous if they select the usually recommended course of treatment. She is an advocate for wise behavior on the part of women. Weed has achieved an important goal by writing a book that is womanish, informative, challenging and timely. I agree with her concern that in the next century people will look back and consider our conventional way of treating breast cancer to be barbaric.

2 out of 5 stars I'm sorely disappointed.......2007-06-25

The other reviews for this book were so good, but I was really disappointed. I love her other Tudor books, and this one didn't even come close. I never felt any emotional connection with the characters, or even between the characters. Then again it is difficult to feel any sympathy or attachment to a cruel and self-destructive character, like the main character, Alys. The story wasn't nearly as fleshed out as say, The Other Boleyn Girl. I would not recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Part Steven King, Part Historical novel.......2007-04-17

OK, I really love her books, but this one really was early on in her career. It starts out well enough with the main character, Elys, being an escapee of a nunnary that was ransacked. She escapes and does not aid her mentor and adopted mother which then haunts Elys. So, she goes back to her old "mother" who is a wise woman, healer etc. and begins to dally in the dark arts. Elys gets to go to the big castle to aide the ailing master ((not the king of England)) but the big land keeper of that area. She gains importance in the castle and then takes to his son and more dark arts follow.

Gregory really is a master storyteller and I do love her work, but I didn't love all of this book. I mean, when Alys' wax figures become real and when an important character has a wax miscarraige, due to her dark arts, I find this the Steve King part of the book and completely rediculous.

This book reminds me most of Wideacre and The King's Fool, but with an really odd, rather science fiction kind of twist.

That said, I did like the ending, which I won't reveal, and I do recommend you check out the book and read it, but skim the wax doll parts as I think all of that just detracts from the book. I wish she could rewrite and edit all that out, and she'd have a smashing book.

5 out of 5 stars The most spellbinding Phillipa Gregory book!.......2006-02-07

Having already read The Other Boleyn Girl, The Queen's Fool, The Virgin's Lover and Earthly Joys, I hardly thought this one would compare. How wrong I was! I was so captivated by Alys' plight. I was outraged and then understanding and empathetic of her decisions, remembering she was a mere immature seventeen year-old. And yet, how can anyone fault her - given the medieval times this story would have taken place. I was captivated by the politics, religion (which were both one and the same), witchcraft, and especially the sexuality, which was quite descriptive (dare I say Hot?)

The end of the story was the biggest surprise of all. So tender and moving were the last pages, I re-read them and teared up both times. I immediately wrote this review, my first ever.

4 out of 5 stars Skewed portrayal of women healers.......2005-11-16

This well written, compelling story completely drew me in. The intricate weave of history with richly imaginative narrative provided me with a captivating read. Yet my personal hopes for the book as a student myself of the history of western women in medicine were dismayed. The story is not an honorable or even accurate portrayal of the women who served as primary health care providers in their communities for untold generations as healers, counselors, midwives, herbalists - those commonly referred to as wise women. It does, however, accurately capture a period of time where womens power was grotesquely feared and became associated with a widespread notion of evil - no doubt at times even by women themselves who were left only with vestiges of the old ways. One wonders if the author herself sadly confuses womens ancient power with negative manipulation as its basis rather than life-affirming, nurturing, and directed strength. Although a wonderfully told story, it is not at all about a woman of wisdom, but about a foolish girl with a dangerous little bit of knowledge making fantastical trouble for herself and others. While highly entertaining, it does not deserve the title.

5 out of 5 stars Strong Study for Willing Hearts.......2007-07-05

As a Bible study leader in women's ministry this is the kind of book/resource we pray God will lead us to. We are using it for summer Bible study and the impact has been very powerful. Paula Rinehart encourages us to fearlessly explore the places we have been in our lives and discover how God can use our experiences to impact positive change and grow closer to God. Paula teaches us to understand that God can, and will, use sorrow and suffering to make us Strong Women with Soft Hearts. The resources, quotes and study questions are fantastic. Through our tears, smiles and laughter our study group is richly blessed by Paula's words.

5 out of 5 stars All in the Title.......2006-09-23

The title says it all -- it's what first caught my eye and it's what continues to draw me back to the book. I've enjoyed it so much that I've been giving a copy of it to many of my female friends. There are different parts that will relate better to some more than others, but all in all, it's an encouragement and a kick in the pants for women to seek out what many times we deny ourselves.
As it is not just limited to our relationship with God, I think it can be a good bridge to share about the faith with non-believers (esp. women). Overall, it's a great way to connect deeper with the women in your life.

3 out of 5 stars Read the book's first-page preview before buying.......2005-06-20

Mixed feelings about this book. It was recommended highly, so my women's Bible study group is using the book for study and discussion. But after going through about two-thirds of the book, our group is split about whether or not to continue. A couple of the women really like and are inspired by it. But the first sentence gives you a clue about the tone of the book: "This book began to write itself a few years back, when I first washed up on the shores of midlife and wondered how I could feel so empty." Not all of us could identify with that, or we have been there and don't want to work through it again. Would prefer something more uplifting than introspective.

I really enjoyed reading this book and loved that the author spoke about Christianity from a non-judgemental perspective.

These tapes are so elementary they are embarrassing. I might have done well to listen to this woman's voice before buying. Her laugh alone, drives me up the wall. I think an intelligent woman, who is actually searching for answers, solutions or just insight, would be made angry by this persons flaunting of the ego and her idea of women today. LaRoche is about 30 years behind times.

5 out of 5 stars A charming tale with lessons for children of all ages........2006-06-26

The 'Wise Woman' is my favorite fairy tale of all time. George MacDonald is wonderfully creative, pulls in just enough 'magic' to be interesting but not confusing, and builds strong characters. The tale has a very strong moral content which goes almost unnoticed by the strength of the story and its characters. I certainly recommend this for young people but I am a 'Senior Citizen' and still find it delightful and a bit thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Parenting Guidelines.......2006-02-28

I loved this story about the Wise Woman. In a fairytale format, it depicted the consequences of bad behavior while at the same time, showed the positive side of doing the right thing. Great story for kids and parents.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC--SUPERB.......1999-12-25

The standout of this collection is the title story, "The Wise Woman, or, The Obstinate Princess." The princess in question is Rosamund, whose royal parents have spoiled her absolutely rotten. In fact, they are sick of her, she's so disgustingly violent and selfish (thanks largely to their 'care'). Enter the Wise Woman, who steals Rosamund away underneath her voluminous cloak and takes Rosamund to her cottage, which is miles away from nowhere--and bigger on the inside than the outside. Here, for the first time, Rosamund begins to learn that her wishes are not what the world revolves around. Very slowly. Before that happens, however, she enters another world through a picture and takes the place of another spoiled brat, Agnes, daughter of a shepherd and shepherdess. Agnes takes Rosamund's place. The Wise Woman does her best to save both girls, whose (to paraphrase Burke) intemperate minds mean that they cannot be free; their passions have forged their fetters. I can't tell you how the story ends, however. You'll have to find out for yourself.

MacDonald writes in an elegant, leisurely style (he takes three pages to describe a rainstorm at the beginning), and the story is rather long for a story--a 100 pages, give or take a few. But these are not really drawbacks. To adult readers, the story is a rather obvious, but effective, allegory of God's offer of redemption to humanity. To child readers, it is simply a good story; they will probably miss the parallel, but get the message. The story is filled with memorable scenes and images: the little cottage, the Wise Woman's eerie song, Agnes in her bubble (in more ways than one), Rosamund losing her temper with the little child in the boat. These make as much of an impression as the ideas, especially the recurring one that it is not enough to good; that's easily done when one's in a good mood. The goodness that counts is that done against one's inclinations--a hard doctrine that negates most of my good deeds, if nobody else's.

In short, this is a haunting book. It is well-written, it is thoughtful, it stands up both as a strong story and as a sermon, it entertains, it rebukes; it rewards repeated reading with additional meaning.

5 out of 5 stars The Wise Woman is a profound and superb allegory.......1998-12-29

Next to the Bible, this book has impacted my life more than any other. If one would truly enjoy taking a good, honest look at one's character, this is the book! It is a frightening mirror of our own humanity, yet one that will inspire change!

5 out of 5 stars Something for everyone, the cream of the crop of fairy tales.......1997-10-13

The Wise Woman, while being a wonderful story also shows amazing insights that the child care specilists seem to just be getting, and it helps parents and the child themselves see cause and effects of different parenting! If you don't have the money to buy it, borrow it from someone!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Every Classroom.......2000-06-17

I just recently attended a reading workshop hosted by famous reading researcher, Yetta Goodman. I was enchanted and moved when she read this to us, 75 teachers. The magical text, along with the beautiful illustrations celebrate every child's need for curiosity and day dreaming! A must have for any children's library collection!

5 out of 5 stars Children will learn the first steps to gaining new knowledge.......1999-02-06

I recently read "The Wise Woman and Her Secret" after talking to our school children about the art of "wondering". We are often told new information by others, however, it is more important that we gain new knowledge by way of our own wondering. Eve Merriam helps us to gain an appreciation for this art by telling this beautiful story. Those who rush through life don't get the chance to wonder. Those who slow down and pick up pennies, or seashells find lots to wonder about and even more to learn. The old woman and the young girl have this gift. One knows that it is a gift and not really a secret, while the other simply enjoys herself and the world around her. Every child and parent should read this story. It will help to pave the way towards a successful life-long learning experience for both.
