Not for the Narrow Minded.......2007-09-20
This book was definitely an eye opener for me. Prior to reading this book I was going through some personal problems with witchcraft that a neighbor was putting on me and was unaware of such things. I had no idea the evil that would be experienced with all the neighbor was doing and all because of a jealous spirit. For she is married to a husband who constantly commits adultery. To my knowledge I had done nothing to this woman, but yet she had a problem with me. Unless you have experienced these types of things then you will not take this book seriously. Glory be to God for allowing Hammond to write this book. It serves as an excellent guide and is very informative.
Pigs in the Parlor.......2007-09-16
For those interested in deliverence or a ministry in deliverence this book is very well written and easy to understand. We all have them and need to be rid of them. Don't be afraid.
A Pastoral Perspective!.......2007-09-11
A good book to add to any collection on the topic of deliverance. Not the most balanced book on the subject, but useful anyway. The chapter with the list of demonic strongholds is extremely useful in getting an understanding of the nature and scope of demonic activities.
One of the best book titles!.......2007-07-20
--and covers. I bought this book back when I was a C-- . I liked Don Basham's book better, where you can find Christians barking on the floor like dogs. Those were the days... Ah, we were sheep. Hey, wait -- dogs, pigs, sheep: am I reviewing a Pink Floyd album?! Can't believe this one still sells at this Amazon rating. I thought it was published later, though, like 1977 or 78. Oh well. Rebellion + rejection = schizophrenia? Alrighty then.
Saw it with my own two eyes!.......2007-07-03
Pigs in the Parlor is one of the best books that I have read in a while. It has kept me in awe of the things that it speaks about. I have found it very informative. Simply because prior to having knowledge of this book, I had already experienced some of the demonic manifestions in a friend. In fact, I was used by the Lord to help deliver them. Of course, I had no knowledge of ever casting out demons. I just did as the Holy Spirit led me. So now a year later from that time, many things supernaturally has occured in my presence with demonic spirits. So to get my hands on this book was like a breath of fresh air. It has shown me what I was really dealing with at those times. As well, as giving me more confirmation (and preparation) that I have been called to be a deliverance "somebody". This book is a great tool for anyone who has experienced these types of things, or who want to simply gain knowledge of self-deliverance and/or becoming a deliverance minster. It was also an eye opener on demonic influences still influencing me that I have to command to leave in the Name of Jesus for my own life. All Glory be to God that His Word does not lie...Jesus is Alive AND we do have the power to raise the dead, heal the sick and cast out demons ALL in the name and authority of Jesus Christ!

...an anthology of shards from a broken world..........2004-05-17
Though the concentration camps are never mentioned, these 23 short stories are a haunting collection about life in Poland at the time of the Holocaust. The theme of the anthology is on the excruciating agony of life in a broken world. These are stories of resistance, submission, betrayal, hope, regret and remembering.
Each story is the nightmare of an otherwise quiet ordinary people, previously living a secure and ordered existence. What is most striking is the uniqueness of the tone and style in each short story; and that none of the stories talk of the camps, only the horror before and after.
Perhaps, the author's own words (see below) taken from the first, title story captures why this collection is ultimately crucial to an impression, an understanding of those times. [Recommended for Young Adults/Adults]
[quote]
I want to talk about a certain time not measured in months and years. For so long I have wanted to talk about this time, and not in the way I will talk about it now, not just about this one scrap of time. I wanted to, but I couldn't, I didn't know how. I was afraid, too, that this second time, which is measured in months and years, had buried the other time under a layer of years, that this second time had crushed the first and destroyed it within me. But no. Today, digging around in the ruins of memory, I found it fresh and untouched from forgetfulness. This time was measured not in months but in a word--we no longer said "in the beautiful month of May," but "after the first "action," or the second, or right before the third." We had different measures of time, we different ones, always different, always with that mark of difference that moved some of us to pride and others to humility. We, who because of our difference were condemned once again, as we had been before in our history, we were condemned once again during this time measured not in months nor by the rising and setting of the sun, but by a word--"action," a word signifying movement, a word you would use about a novel or a play.
[/end quote]
A Scrap of Time.......1999-12-02
Ida Fink uses vivid langauge and impectable details to bring faces to the Holcaust. She tells haunting stories about Jewish life in Poland before and after World War II. Fink's stories are beutifully told and evoke every emotion; from fear to joy, hatred to pity. The book tells about individuals and gives faces and lives to the often impresonal Holocaust.
An exceptional collection of short stories.......1999-05-31
A Scrap of Time is a collection of short stories that masterfully presents the Holocaust experience from the perspective of survivors, witnesses, and victims in the villages of occupied Poland. Acts of personal courage, the day to day decisions that meant life or death, personal attempts to carry on with dignity, are all expressed here in powerful language and moving tales that evoke the Holocaust as it is not often told: as an experience that was as personal as each person who lived it. I have read and re-read this book several times. Each time, the stories seem to resound with their original power. Ida Fink, a Polish survivor of the Holocaust, is a master storyteller. With the very first sentence, she has the ability to create scenes of astonishing clarity and suspense. You simply cannot put the book down until you finish the story. With simple, lyrical language, she creates scenes of tremendous emotional impact. I don't believe I will ever look at the Holocaust in quite the same way. No television documentary could ever do justice to the Holocaust experience as these unforgettable stories of the personal lives of human beings in the most impossible of situations.

Book Description
This seminal work made its debut in 1977, and it has since remained the most important reference for Rolfers around the world. In this new edition, the late Dr. Rolf illustrates her theory and practice of Structural Integration, which brings the body into alignment and balance by manipulation of the connective tissue. Rolfing has helped thousands of people to stand taller, look better, move with greater ease, and have a greater sense of vitality and well-being.
This is the original and classic text, with more than 600 illustrations and photographs
An indispensible reference for the hundreds of Rolfers in this country, it will also appeal to other professional bodyworkers and the interested lay person.
Customer Reviews:
This book answered questions I didn't know I had, and showed me where a great deal of my day to day knowledge originated........2006-10-17
I am a clinical massage therapist in Seattle, WA. I was trained in a method of manual therapy called Neuromuscular therapy by its founder, Paul St. John I came to understand the importance of balance in the structure of the body. When a friend gave me an original copy of this book: 'Rolfing: Reestabling...' by Dr. Rolf I fell right into it. Dr. Rolf was the progenitor of a point of view that stresses a.}close examination of the alignment and physical (or structural) balance of the body, b.} a direct relationship between structure and function in this regard, and c.} the notion that a manual approach can re-organize the body in a deep and meaninful way. I kept discovering very quotable passages, and thinking 'That's what I always say'. I came to see that without Ida Rolf as my grandmother in the field of hands on therapy, I could never have been trained in a way that I could have had those insights. A very validating experience to find that you had got the message, even when you really derived it from things that you heard second hand.
As a text, this book goes a long ways to filling in some of the mysterious blanks in our understanding of the body and it's function in gravity. It has enjoyable prose, flowing description and explanation, countless photos of case studies, and even more valuably it has a great number of hand-drawn illustrations, I beleive by Ida Rolf herself. The book covers specific subjects that are not undertaken by any other texts I have read in this field, where balance and structural orientation are concerned (look for the biomechanical description of the function of the pelvic floor, for example).
For people who work with the body in a hands-on clinical fashion, this book is a classic. It would fill a great gap on the shelf on anyone concerned with physical examination as well.
I can heartilly reccommend the book at this price, too.
Insightful........2006-10-02
I was very gladly surprised when I saw how well Rolf writes, as I was expecting the originator of Structural Integration therapy to use a "heavy" language, like F.M. Alexander did in his books on the Alexander Technique. The only thing keeping me from breezing through this book are my own ponderings on the insights Rolf constantly gives me. If you are interested in the human body in any way, get this (you should get it anyway, you will become interested!).
Brilliant.......2003-08-28
This book is invaluable in understanding the inter-relationships within the human body--and nothing is more important for proper assessment and treatment of myofascia. This is not a technique book, rather a book which details the fundamental principles of stuctural bodywork. It will aid any therapist in gaining a deeper understanding of the human body and avoiding the all-too-common problem of symptom chasing. Read this book to understand how structure effects function, and function effects health.
Very interesting, informative reading!.......2003-02-19
I found this book to be very helpful in deepening my understanding of the way the different parts of the body are interconnected and interdependent. It has influenced my yoga practice and my teaching. I better understand how the physical practice of yoga helps with spiritual transformation. I highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to be actively involved in your own transformation and evolution. This book will help yoga teachers identify the bony landmarks on the body to help brighten a student's alignment and free up energy in the body. It starts from the feet and moves up, just as you would create any pose. The language is easy to understand and there are many valuable drawings and photographs which illustrate each point.
Superior book on posture and movement.......2000-03-21
Rolfing can make profound changes in posture and movement. This book tries to get beyond the medical dissection model of anatomy and really get at the way the core postural muscles are supposed to coordinate movement. The chapter on the psoas is worth the price of the book.
This IS NOT a how-to on Rolfing nor does it get into the transformative powers of Rolfing from the perspective of someone who is undergoing processing. It is more a book of anatomy and kinesiology.

Book Description
Who is Ida B. Applewood? She is a fourth grader like no other, living a life like no other, with a voice like no other, and her story will resonate long after you have put this book down. How does Ida B cope when outside forces—life, really—attempt to derail her and her family and her future? She enters her Black Period, and it is not pretty. But then, with the help of a patient teacher, a loyal cat and dog, her beloved apple trees, and parents who believe in the same things she does (even if they sometimes act as though they don't), the resilience that is the very essence of Ida B triumph...and Ida B. Applewood takes the hand that is extended and starts to grow up.
This first novel is both very funny and extraordinarily moving, and it introduces two shining stars—Katherine Hannigan and Ida B. Applewood.
Customer Reviews:
Sorry, just didn't care for this one. Parents should pre-read........2007-07-10
Boy was I disappointed in Ida B. Just looking at the cover, reading the back, etc. you would NEVER expect the main plot to center around the anger that the main character experiences when her mother is diagnosed with cancer. But the main part of the book is just that. Ida B being (justifiably) angry and sullen at having to return to public school after four years of home-schooling. I normally do not pre-read the books my kids get at the library but this one I did and I don't think I want my daughter reading anything this depressing.
Aside from the overall plot, I found the details in the story totally unbelievable. Little Ida seems to get VERY little supervision in her idlyic world before she goes to school. Does anyone let their kid roam unsupervized and alone for hours on end over sprawling acreage to climb trees, lay in the brook, etc. in this day and age? And I understand that Ida B. is supposed to be a precocious girl, but I seriously doubt any 5 year old would describe her new teacher's smile as "a small sad-happy smile, where your mouth turns up but your eyes look pained, almost all of the time".
In keeping this review short, this book left me sad and depressed. I wouldn't want my third grader reading it. Perhaps if we discussed it beforehand so she'd know what to expect then it could be okay.
I really wanted to like Ida B............2007-06-08
*SPOILERS*
Ida B. Applewood has the life: no siblings, no sitting through agonizing hours locked in a classroom to learn, no smoggy city apartment. Instead, she is homeschooled by her loving parents in their ranch home, hangs with her slobbery dog Rufus, and talks to trees as she skips through the family's large prized apple orchard with a smile on her face and adventure in her eyes.
Sounds adorable. That was exactly what I thought, too. I would just die to feel the warm summery breeze blowing through the trees while I wrote essays on how to keep nature alive instead of being stuck in a stuffy room with a bunch of kids who don't want to be there, either. But once I started reading "Ida B", I realized something about her was just not turning me on.
The book is well-written with sections of amazing description and carries and typical, easy-to-relate-to moral...that change is hard. But Ida B, for me, did not turn out to be the cutesy nature-lover I hoped. I tried to like her. Really. But it just didn't click. As others have mentioned, the author almost seemed to push you too hard on the narrator. She was a Ramona Quimby, an Opal Buloni, and a Junie B. Jones on an apple orchard who seemed to know she was creative. The scenes were pressing for you to like her, as if little Ida B was waving a "Look what ELSE I can do!" sign.
The one scene that made me wince was a dinner table scene. Ida B and her parents were sitting around the table eating, and they were quizzing her on math. Her mother told her she gave her $20 to buy flour at the store, and immediately Ida B blurted out about which store it was and if she was walking, and her mother just pulled an "Oh, Ida B." And, of course, a page later Ida B had to throw in that she tallies up her mother's money at the store and the cashier coos over her genius. *wince*. Her parents were an annoyance sometimes. The fact that they pulled her out of school two weeks into kindergarten because she complained that she wasn't having "fun" was a bit strange. And when Ida B finds out she must return to this "Place of Slow but Sure Body-Cramping, Mind-Numbing, Fun-Killing Torture" due to her mother's cancer, instead of recognizing the fact that her parents are going to the extent to send her to a public school for both social and academic help, Ida B sulks and complains the chapter afterwards and tells herself she must hate this school and made the plan that she would have "no friends, no play, no smiling, no happy" and stick to her plan no matter what happened. Although Ida B's nicknames for the bus and school itself were humorous, I couldn't help but think how utterly depressing the book was turning. The book seemed to stress that Ida B was creative and optimistic at the beginning of the book, but that didn't seem to be happening later; sometimes, this little girl did not live up to her character.
The ending was satisfying--complete and well-written, where Ida B comes to her senses that she really could have been a bit selfish during the transition period between paradise and nightmare. Give her a shot; maybe you'll enjoy her antics more than I did. Overall, good, original story, but the main character really wasn't all I'd hoped.
Really disappointed after all the hype.......2007-06-01
I have to agree with my fellow reviewers who did not like this book. I don't think I made it past the second chapter, I found Ida to be so sappy and annoying (she talks to trees? What???)
Before you order your own copy I would borrow one from the public library and see if the book turns you off as much as it did me.
Ida B........2007-05-03
Lesley Benson Ida B
By Katherine Hannigan
The book I read is called Ida B. It was an awesome book. The book was about a girl called Ida B. She lives on an orchard farm. Her dad is very into nature. One day the apple trees tell Ida that trouble is coming. She goes to the brook and asks him if this is true but he doesn't answer. Then she goes to the old tree and he tells her that hard times are coming.
Ida B is home schooled. She went to school for two weeks and three days. Her teacher was Ms. Myers. She was mean. One day Ida B's mom came to school. That was the last day Ida B went to school.
Before the school year starts Ida B's mom gets sick. She is diagnosed with cancer. Now Ida B's dad is forced to sell some of the land. That meant cutting down some of the trees. Ida B also had to go to school.
Ida B comes up with lots of plans to make her life, as well as everone's around her, miserable. The only one she will talk to is her teacher Mrs.Washingon. There is a fun twist at the end of this story.
I think everyone should read this book because it is fun to read is has lots of suprizing thingss that you don't think are coming. You never know what Ida will do next. It is a woderful book that everyone can read.
The Best Book.......2007-04-04
I have read the book Ida B. by Katherine Hannigan and it was a very good book.
Ida B. always talked to the trees and the brook. She played with them every evening. Then one day Ida B.'s mom got a lump on her body. She went to the doctor and found that the lump had Cancer. Before Ida B. had been home schooled by her mom and dad, but Ida B.'s dad couldn't take care of the farm, school Ida B. and take care of mom.Ida B.'s dad ended haveing to sell a little bit of the valleys and mountains thay he owned and he had to send Ida B. to school. A school buddy, Claire, moved into the land that had to be sold. Ida B. got into a fight with her and can't find a way out. Then when the school year ended mom got better, but did Ida B. end the fight with Claire? Find out in this book.
I was stunned when I found out that Ida B.'s mom had Cancer. It would not be fun to have to sell some of your families land and go to school and have your mom sick and tired. I also think that it would not be fun to not have any friends at school and be in a fight with someone in your own class. It was a hard time for Ida B. Therefore, if you want a good book, read Ida B.

DVI IS NOT USED FOR COMPRESSION.......2007-01-25
On page 22 at the top it speaks of a new video compression Digital Video Interface (DVI), that will compress video to a ratio of 150:1 and will store an hour length of video under a gigabyte.
If you are wanting to learn the low level inner workings of an OS, skip this book.
Nice Introduction to Operating Systems.......2005-12-30
The book is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the basics of operating systems which includes memory manager, processor manager, file manager, device manager and network manager. This part is presented in such a way that it can be easily comprehended by even novices and the authors did an excellent job here. The second part of the book deals with specific operating systems. Details about MS-DOS, Windows 2000, UNIX, OpenVMS Alpha and OS/390 operating systems are provided in this part. While there are few locations where the explanation is not very clear, for the most part it is understandable.
This book was a required text for an undergrad course in Operating Systems I was taking. I read it from cover to cover and overall I liked it very much. I would have liked to see more visuals, examples and exercises. I will not sell this book but I will keep it for future reference. Like another reviewer mentioned, some knowledge about computer peripherals is necessary to study this book, however no specific language is assumed. Highly recommended to those who are new to this topic.
Great Intro to a complicated subject.......2005-11-04
This book really hits the important info about a complicated subject. When I was studying OS in college, I didn't need to create operating systems, I needed to know what they're all about. This was the required book in my OS class and I could read and understand even the complicated stuff. It's a good starting place. This is one of only 2 textbooks that I didn't sell when I graduated. It's still a good reference. I highly recommend it.
Anemic, Obsolete, and Contains factual errors.......2005-03-15
When I received this book in the mail, I was curious as to why it was including a large section on MS-DOS. While there is historical and pedagogical justification for covering MS-DOS, the cover text claims that MS-DOS is one of "the three most widely-used operating systems". This statement is a bit dated. While MS-DOS may have formed the basis for early versions of MS-Windows, current versions are NT based. The book's discussion of the relationship between MS-DOS, Windows, and Windows-NT is a bit muddled.
Turning to the actual section on MS-DOS, we read that MS-DOS was the "successor to CP/M" which is correct. However, the authors go on to flatly claim that "CP/M ran "8-bit machines marketed by Apple Computer and Tandy Corporation". This claim is hard to understand. CP/M was an operating system which ran on Intel 8080 and Zilog Z80 processors. The Apple II computer incorporated a Mostech 1802 processor which executed a superset of the Motorola 6800 instruction set. The two instruction sets families were mutually incompatible. Further, it is well known that Steve Wozniak produced the operating system for the Apple II. Ignorance of instruction set incompatibility is not a good indicator of textbook reliability.
While the book does cover Bell Unix and Linux, it does not appear to cover BSD. BSD is historically significant in both the evolution of the unix operating system and the internet. The index also lacks a reference to the GNU project which is a pivotal component of any delivered Linux system.
While this text does cover some operating system theory and does distribute architectural principles and features such as RAID systems throughout the text, it does little to explain how operating systems actually work. In particular, it does not have much in the way of code samples for key components such as the multitasking kernel.
This text lacks a separate section for architecture review. It begins with a chapter on memory allocation and proceeds to a chapter on process scheduling. While architectural features are distributed throughout the text, the text can not stand alone for programs which expect student to learn systems programming.
Physically, the book is handsomely produced and is of a more student-friendly size than many other textbooks. It is well illustrated with illustrations for such classic concurrency problems as the Dining Philosopher's Problem. This book may be appropriate for a course taught to future IT technicians, but should not be considered as a text for a Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Computer Engineering program.
This review is for the Fourth Edition ISBN 0-534-42366-3
Excellent treatment of OS concepts.......2003-05-04
This text explains OS functions and features from a conceptual standpoint, with a focus on how and why things work. An overview of the components of an OS is given, then each piece is explored in detail. The general OS model consists of a User Command Interface, Process Manager, Memory Manager, Device Manager, and File Manager.
After covering the OS from a general perspective in the first half of the book, the second half deals with the details/differences of MS-DOS, Windows 2000, Unix, OpenVMS Alpha, and OS/390.
This is an excellent introductory book, explaining the inner workings of an OS without using complex math and code examples. The foundation provided by this book will prepare the reader for real, hard-core OS details that are found in other OS texts.

Simply the best!.......2007-09-28
If you're looking for a complete field guide on fossils, you can't beat Audubon's. More than pictures and identification -- there's a ton of history and science too.
great little book.......2006-12-30
if you want to begin a hobby collecting fossils this is the book to have.
CERTAINLY FITS MY NEEDS.......2006-08-27
I am certainly not an expert in this field, have no formal training. I am simply a rather old man who has been grubbing in the ground and dirt and in the rocks for most of my life and have had a fascination with fossels since a very, very young child. This particular book has brought me a lot of pleasure and added greatly to the enjoyment of my hobby of "grubbing." I realize that no one book can provide all the answers and identify all the fossil remains known (good grief, there are new ones being discovered every day it seems), but this work certainy meets my needs. I have yet to find a fossel that I was unable to identify with it's use, and at the very least, has given me clues as to where I might go to find the answers I needs. The photographs are great as are the written discriptions. I carry this one with me always when out in the field. Recommend this one highly.
Great for Invertebrate collectors.......2006-07-04
I bought this book through the Amazon marketplace with great anticipation. However, it contained little information on plant and Vertebrate fossils which are my main interest. About 90% of the book focused on Shells, Corals,Sponges,Triliobites, Bryozoans, Sand Dollars, etc. In that subject matter the photos and detailed information about each was excellent. It was a bit trying to read the map plates; the text was small and difficult to find in the shaded areas. On another note it has great information about Geologic time and where to look for fossils.
This is a great reference for any fossil collector, however, if you are more interested in detailed information and photographs about fossils of plants, reptiles, fish, and mammals this book will disapoint with its lack of information
"THE" Fieldguide.......2003-12-23
If you're looking for an excellent fossil fieldguide, look no further. This is the first book I purchased to help me identify fossils, and have since purchased seven more but keep going back to this one. Why? First of all, the format is great. Tons of full-color photos and precise descriptions of the pictured specimens, including which areas of North America they normally occur in and when the organism existed (or exists) in geological time. Also lists similar fossils that are sometimes mistaken for or confused with the one illustrated.
Second, this book focuses specifically on North American fossils, which means that you get more concise information. Many other fossil guides attempt to cover fossils of the world in the same size book (or smaller), which is doubtless a very ambitious project, but probably impossible to do successfully in the form of a fieldguide. So with the National Audobon guide, you get more pertinent information. Granted, not everyone is looking for an American-specific guide. But if you
want information on, say, European or Morrocan fossils, the same concept applies: Purchasing a more specific guide gives you more specific information for your money.
Third, the photos in this guide look like fossils as they occur in nature (as opposed to some fossil guides picturing specimens that have been prepped and polished and perfectly repaired). This is an obvious advantage when trying to identify a specimen that you have just brushed the soil off of. (In fact, most "serious" paleontologists recommend that the natural condition of a fossil be altered as little as possible.)
Fourth, the book diagrams and labels the different parts of the major fossil types. So by studying the diagrams, one can learn the paleontological names for the parts.
I will say that the book focuses mainly on invertebrate fossils, so if you're interested specifically in vertebrate paleontology this would not be the book for you. But again: Purchasing a more specific guide gives you more specific information for your money.
In conclusion, I very highly recommend this book to someone that is interested in identifying and learning more about invertebrate fossils. I have yet to find a guide that tops it!

Book Description
This essential desk reference will meet the demand for a broad and convenient collection of normative data in child neuropsychology. In a clearly written, well-organized manner, it compiles published and previously unpublished normative data for the neuropsychological tests that are most commonly used with children. Far from being a raw collection, however, it integrates concepts and models central to the neuropsychological assessment of children into the discussions of data. All these discussions have a practical, clinical focus. As background, the author considers the current status of child neuropsychology practice, test models, behavioral assessment techniques, observational data, procedures to optimize child evaluation, communication of results through the interpretive session and report writing, and preliminary assessment methods. Then she reviews the tests and data under the broad domains of intelligence, executive function, attention, language, motor and sensory-perceptual function, visuoperceptual, visuospatial and visuoconstructional function, and learning and memory. Written by a seasoned practitioner, this book will be an extraordinary resource for child and developmental neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, child neurologists, and their students and trainees.

A must have for any pediatric neuropsychologist !.......2006-01-18
Thanks to Sue Baron, the pediatric neuropsychologist finaly have the equivalent of the Lezak for adult neuropsychology. This book is in the top list of the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology and you will understand why when you will read it ! The heart of the book is the description of almost all the tests available in the field of pediatric neuropsychology. The descriptions cover the statistic properties and the main studies available on the principle tests. Each chapter that presents a function starts with a state of the art at a Phd level. It really saved me hours of reading in many books ! Included are also numerous norms (mostly americans)with unpublished ones. The references included are of a great interrest too. The chapter on report wrinting is also essential. To be perfect one would expect a chapter on achievement tests and due to its publication date the WISC IV and the WPPSI III are not included. Apart from this there is simply no criticism to formulate. In a short way I strongly recommand this book and would be very surprised to find any disappointed reader !
Finally, a Spreen & Strauss for child neuropsychologists!.......2004-07-21
My title should "tell all" to any real neuropsychologist. I don't have time to give this book the review it deserves, so I'll just say this: It's a must have for any pediatric neuropsychologist. It's also beautifully written. Thanks, Dr. Baron!

A rare look at life at the turn of the century in China.......2006-12-07
China always seems to have a veil of mystery around it. This book give a rare glimpse of life at the turn of the 19th century as the empire was dying and the nationalists and communists were gearing up for battle. I read this book for a class on Chinese women and absolutely loved it. I will always remember the part of having her feet bound and how her mother would lay on her legs at night so that she could sleep. Unfortunately I lost the book after many years. It wasn't until now, as I was conducting inventory of our biography collection at the library where I work, that I came across the sequal to this book. For those who could not get enough of Lao Tai-tai, there is a second book by Ida Pruitt titled "Old Madam Yin: a memoir of Peking life 1926-1938." The copyright date is 1979. The Daughter of Han is now a wealthy widow struggling to adapt to the new order. If you can't find it on amazon you can always Inter-library loan the book, I know there's at least one library in the midwest that has it ;).
Superb documentation of a Chinese working woman.......2006-01-19
This riveting book details an area of Chinese life seldom touched by written records. The remarkable friendship between Ida Pruitt and Ning Lao Toai-Toai has led to this very readable, and beautifully textured description of Ning Lao Toai-Toai's life in the late 19th and early 20th century. I found it both an enjoyable read and a valuable source of information about my research related to Chinese family life.
A Slice of Life.......2004-02-08
Ning Lao Ta'i-ta'i. _The Autobiography of a Chinese Working Woman. Translated and Transcribed by Ida Pruitt. Stanford: Stanford University Press, 1967.
Every now and then I read an entire book in one for one or two reasons a) I have to read a book that I have put off for the time period in which I had to read it b) I become completely engrossed in it. I must say that, in the case of this book, it started off as the former and it ended up being the latter, although I still have to write a paper on it by tuesday.
This memoir was was orally transcribed by Ida Pruitt over a two year period in which Mrs. Ning visited her from 1936-38. Pruitt was forced to leave Beijing in 1938 when the Japanese invaded the series. In the brief introduction of the book, Pruitt informs the reader that she does not know what happened to Mrs. Ning after she returned to America. The brutallity of the Japanese army was not as great in Beijing as in such areas as Nanjing and Shanghai, but one can not help wondering about Mrs.Ning who the reader, or at least I, becomes quite attached to.
Mrs. Ning begins her tale by detailing how her family became established in the town of P'englai her family history is both entrenched in history and folklore and makes for a fascinting read. The book continues following her life from her childhood, marriage, hard times, working both for government officials and missionaries, and finally living in Beijing. The greatest thing about this book is the extraordinary detail Mrs. Ning goes into describing her everyday life. One can almost see oneself removing the fourth wall of the past and being able to see late Ching China. One gets to see a good picture of opium addiction and the dealings inside yamen, political offices, that are no longer controlled by skilled officials. A great book.
I Really Liked this book!.......2003-05-17
I had to read this book for a core class in college and I thought that I would have hated it. Actually, I really liked it. It told of a Chinese working woman's life. It even gives the reader an insight into her lifestyle and her struggles during this tumuluous time in history. The story even touches on the japanese invasion. I didn't think this biography would be interesting but it was. I would recommended this book to anyone. It is a light read and it is very interesting.
life of one Chinese woman.......2002-08-22
Ida Pruitt's biography of Ning Lao T'ai-t'ai (literally "old lady Ning"), a peasant woman of northeast China born in 1867, is a fascinating anecdotal retelling of Ning's personal history as she related it to the author over the course of their two year long friendship. The storyline of Ning's life: childhood, marriage, work, and children, is laid out in a chronological history, broken into separate sections at particular turning points; and yet a cohesive theme of hardship, oppression and poverty, of strong-willed women and weak men is carried throughout not only Ning's tales but also through the stories she relates of her ancestors and neighbors.
Pruitt writes in the voice of Ning as if she is translating, but what she is really doing is recalling Ning's stories of her life in the first half of the 20th century. Ning was born into an educated middle class family which had fallen on harder times. Her father wants a better situation for her marriage, but the older husband he choses for her becomes addicted to opium driving the family into poverty. To survive and feed her children Ning must become first a beggar, then a servant to various households: military, Muslim, bureaucrat, and finally to Christian missionaries. And Ning's voice does come across clearly; speaking against concubinage and prostitution, about the penury of employers, the need to support and keep family together.
By using a first person retelling of the stories Pruitt gives the impresssion of accuracy, yet there were 7 years between the conversations with Ning and the writing of the book. Also the apparent bias against Japanese in prologue and last chapter together with the pub. date of the book indicate a hidden agenda on the part of the author. Still, although limited to the view of this one woman's experience, Ning's story is reflective of the hardships of life for Chinese women before the Communist era.
