2 out of 5 stars Somewhat dissapointed.......2007-07-29

This book is a compilation of James Allen's work. I liked the message of A Man Thinketh, so I bought this book. Most of the other writings in this book are hard to understand because Allen is apparently an Englishman who wrote this stuff somewhere between the middle ages and the 20th century, and it seems to be fairly religious in nature complete with dogmatic overtones. I give it 2 stars because while the message is not inspiring, the book appears to be an accurate depiction of Allen's work.

4 out of 5 stars Selected Teachings of James Allen.......2007-05-21

James Allen is one of the best writers of the 19th Century. I am thrilled to have more of his writings.

    Book Description

What forces lead to changes in governance among medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals? To what extent do such changes affect how well those schools and hospitals do their work? In this book, John A. Kastor, M.D., focuses on the academic medical centers of the University of Pennsylvania and the Johns Hopkins University, two institutions that underwent dramatic change in governance during the late 1990s.

Drawing on extensive interviews with more than three hundred administrators, physicians, and other medical professionals at Penn, Hopkins, and elsewhere, Kastor identifies the factors that influenced changes in governance at these two institutions. Chief among these, he finds, are structure, personality conflicts, and current events. This book will be of interest to administrators of teaching hospitals as well as professionals in health policy and management.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent memoir .......2007-03-29

This book is certainly a landmark in political autobiography: not only for its sheer size (1138 pages excluding the bibliography ) but also for its depth of knowledge and information on foreign policy during the Reagan era. The prose can be tedious and the detail at times is exhaustive, but the book is priceless and could serve as an excellent source for anyone interested in politics in general. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Easier and More Sensible than Kissinger--Of Lasting Value.......2006-04-01

This is one of those rare memoirs that combine ease of reading, common sense, and substantive greatness. Much much easier to absorb that Henry's Kissinger's turgid prose.

Although no longer in print, there are a number of copies floating around, and as long as I was using the book for a new article on strategic intelligence, I thought I would offer up my notes from the flyleaf for the Amazon community. My page numbers are from the 1993 hard cover edition.

Secretary Shultz is a former Marine and says early on in the book that his wife is part of a "package deal."

Some extremely thoughtful views on competition in the information age, and very strong explicit angry statements against the "cult of secrecy." Clearly understands the revolution in communications and information technology. p 18

Has some real issues with flaws in raw open source information loaded with unfiltered bias. p. 26

First director of OMB, p. 29, does not evince concerns over the disappearance of the Management function over the years.

Crisis management still not making proper use of open sources of information including commercial imagery, p. 44

CIA under Bill Casey too independent and unreliable. p. 50

Diplomatic "gardening" consists of SecState visiting counterparts on their home turf. p. 128

      Vatican intelligence, p. 150

Emphasis throughout on values, integrating cultural policy, cultural strategy, cultural warfare

Firehose of information, nothing offered by intelligence or by information technology managers helped deal with it. p. 272

CIA "wild plan" for Surinam, p. 297

CIA "out of control" in mining Nicaraguan harbors, p. 307

Faulty intelligence to the President, p. 312

Intelligence pattern over time: first alarming and then vague, -. 425

On Strategic Defense Initiative, going to a briefing only to be asked, "Is the Secretary cleared?" Dumbfounded by this. p. 492

"So much for our intelligence" faulty biography on Soviet Premier Tikhonov, p. 493

      State/Schultz versus Defense/Weinberger "poison" sapped government cohesion, p. 498

Security reviews, ridiculous impositions, p. 544

      CIA botches Yurchenko, p. 595

Intelligence cooking the books, p. 619

Bottom line: Intelligence let this Secretary of State down, and does not appear to have gotten any more competent since then despite a doubling of its budget from $25M to $50M or more (some estimates suggest $70B total).

If you are interested in grand strategy, unified national security (using ALL of the instruments of national power wisely), and the vagaries of a really rotten Presidential inter-agency management process, this book is well worth buying used.

If you've got a teenager at home who is manipulating the family and refusing to live by your rules, consider the practical guidance of Teens in Turmoil. Aimed specifically at families experiencing severe distress, Teens provides insight and instruction through real-life examples. Most of the stories are full of anger and miscommunication--problems many parents are all too familiar with. Using tools like "instant replay" of unsuccessful conversations to elicit more positive exchanges, you'll learn how to achieve better results from incidents like poor grades, missing a curfew, or lying. Diagnosis for teen problems can be a little tricky--is what you're experiencing "normal," or have things gotten out of control? To this end, the guide offers helpful questions to ask yourself as well as warning signs: Is your teen being physically threatening or sexually promiscuous? Any abrupt changes in personal style or behavior? Certainly, teens test limits, experiment with style, and cop attitudes; that is as it should be during these years of mental and physical upheaval. But parents have every right to have standards and expectations that their children can be required to meet--even when the child in question is "nearly an adult." --Jill Lightner

        Book Description

Sometimes it's a little thing-the way a teen dresses-or something more serious, like finding drugs in their bedroom. Whatever the circumstances, say authors Carol Maxym and Leslie York, the turning point comes when your child's out-of-control behavior takes control of the entire family.

Teens in Turmoil helps concerned parents turn fear and desperation into hope and action. Maxym and York guide parents in charting a course to getting their families-and teens-back on track.

5 out of 5 stars Teens in Turmoil.......2004-04-13

Having firsthand experience with a Teen in Turmoil, I can truthfully say that our entire family was floundering. What to do? What to say? I had read many books on the subject of parenting a troubled teen and found conflicting advice. THIS BOOK IS THE ANSWER! Instead of treating the symptoms, this book addresses the problem! We are currently incorporating Dr. Maxym's advice to our problems and we are seeing results! You will, too. I highly recommend this book to ALL parents, whether you have a teen in turmoil or not. It might even prevent you from going through the turmoil and it doesn't get any better than that!

5 out of 5 stars Teens in Turmoil.......2003-07-06

There is no book that I would recommend more highly to families struggling with the teens in their lives. So many of us scratch our heads in dismay at what became of those precious children we raised as they morph into disrespectful, manipulative, defiant members of the household. So many families feel like they are "walking on eggshells" when their teenager is at home and they worry about where they really are and what they are doing when they're not home. I read a number of books that were interesting and gave me a few insights about how to deal with our daughter but they were really only bandaid approaches. I was on the verge of giving up hope until I read this book.
Carol provides an uncanny insight into some of the reasons why these behaviors have developed and then, based on the level of difficulty you are experiencing with your child, she offers actual possible courses of action! She describes in depth where to get more information or help depending on what you think will most benefit your own relationships. Finally, at the end she lists her website where you can e-mail her directly for personal help if you are not sure what your child really needs.
I almost did not read this book as I had read so many that did not really help. But, I picked it up and leafed through it and immediately knew this was the one we needed. Reading it gave us real direction. Taking the action that we decided on has made a life changing difference in all of our lives. She discusses all the areas of adolescence that are so powerful in the world today including lying, alcohol, drugs, sexual acting out and more. Our daughter is in a program that is transforming her into a strong, confident, responsible person and we are all much closer and communicating on an intimate level I never expected to be able to achieve. There are many more fabulous programs out there that the average family counseling does not know about or understand. Carol is knowledgeable about virtually all of them and, if you choose, as we did, she helped us discern exactly which program would benefit our daughter the most. We are getting our daughter back thanks to this book and the action we took.
I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK HIGHLY ENOUGH.

4 out of 5 stars For Average Parent of Not So Average Kid.......2002-05-07

There are some excellent scenarios to fit different kinds of kids and parents. I will definitely suggest this book to others. The only drawback is that is is written by two therapists from a sort of counseling perspective. If you are willing to address your imperfections this book will help. It will also aid in knowing how to deal with manipulation, lying, guilt, blame, parent splitting, medication and denial. A good read.

5 out of 5 stars Guidance when you need it.......2000-04-29

Our son is not our first child. My wife and I had been concerned for some time about aspects of his teenage behavior. However, we weren't sure if that behavior was a real problem or something that would typically pass in the transition to adulthood. Teens in Turmoil was pivotal in coming to our realization that not only was our son was at risk but his behavior required immediate action on our part.

At a time when we, as parents, felt alone, confused and desperate for information Teens in Turmoil provided a path to recapture our lives and a future for our son. Through case descriptions of adolescents at risk, insight into the underlying causes of self-defeating behaviors and suggested courses of action, this book helped us act decisively.

Teens in Turmoil was instrumental in pushing us to act and take the first steps to reclaim our lives and our son. If you are considering this book, chances are you will find that Dr. Maxym has put her finger squarely on your child's behavior in a concise manner that ties together seemingly chaotic elements of teen conduct. We recommend it enthusiastically and without reservation.

        5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide.......2000-03-15

As the parent of a teen who has gone through a couple of very difficult years, I have been on a continual search for some sort of guidance to help us navigate this period. Our bookshelf housing teen and family titles is the most extensive of anyone I know. Finding "Teens in Turmoil" has been a blessing. After having been told to see another therapist, another psychiatrist or to try another medication, what a relief it was to find a perspective which encourages taking ownership of the problem and accepting responsibility to survive (for both the teen and the parents). The case studies, while not exactly like our situation and in many ways much more serious, have proved invaluable. The book has encouraged us both in terms of the way we are handling things, as well as the psychological aspect of not being the only ones with our type of problem. What a helpful guidebook! Anyone who is struggling with serious issues of parenting a teen in turmoil will not find a better book. I could not recommend this book more highly!

1 out of 5 stars A prolix book, in desperate need of a ruthless editor..........2007-06-02

Based upon favourable reviews, both here as well as in Foreign Affairs, I had high hopes for this book - but I can't recall feeling as bewildered and disappointed by a simple book purchase ever before.

If the author has anything interesting to say, this book will defeat the best efforts of any ordinary reader to find it. If however, you are the sort of person who revels in page-long, convoluted, sentences - that heap subordinate clause upon subordinate clause - all in aid of some strained and irrelevant analogy, then this is the tome for you. Just don't expect to be any the wiser when you have deciphered it.

"The River of Lost Footsteps" and "The Trouser People" are both fascinating books, and they seem to shed far more light on the current situation in Burma than, sadly, Professor Steinberg appears able to.

5 out of 5 stars Great analysis on modern Burma.......2007-01-21

First, a disclaimer: I am not a disinterested observer of Burmese affairs, and I consider the author a personal friend and mentor.

Having said that, I can objectively say that this is another great work by Prof. Steinberg. Unlike many Burma watchers, he tries his best to provide illumination without rhetorical bombs or emotional diatribes. He is against sanctions, but also places much of the blame for Burma's problems at the feet of the government. He acknowledges the perpetration of human rights abuses, but tries to ask difficult questions such as whether the national government really can prevent its soldiers in the field from undertaking abuses.

This book is an interesting look at legitimacy issues, but may be a bit much for the uninitiated. For a more general overview on Burma, see Prof. Steinberg's Burma: State of Myanmar or U-Myint Thant's recent River of Lost Footsteps. After one of those two books, this one brings together some of the key events of modern Burmese history to try to piece together how the Burmese government, exile groups, and average people view themselves.

There is probably no person better suited to write this book on Iran's cultural and political transformation than Robin Wright. She has traveled to Iran as a reporter since 1973, when the country was "one of the few comfortable places for foreigners"--including women--to live and work, a place where "short skirts were acceptable" and women "wore bikinis on the beach." But the revolution in 1979 changed all that: "For anyone who'd been to Iran before, the new Islamic Republic of Iran seemed almost like a different country." There was the revival of religious fundamentalism, the hostage crisis, a costly war with Iraq, the sponsorship of terrorism, and Iran-Contra. Iran became one of the most perplexing and vital beats in all of journalism, a touchstone for Middle Eastern politics and an emerging presence on the world stage--and Wright has been there for more of it than any other foreigner.

The Last Great Revolution is a sweeping portrait of a misunderstood country. Much of it is anecdotal rather than analytical, but all is in the service of illuminating what Wright calls "the world's only modern theocracy." She writes of an airline stewardess who gave Wright Band-Aids to cover her nail polish before entering the country and a customs official who ripped up her deck of playing cards one by one. But there are also unexpected opportunities for women (they can become engineers and lawyers), plus a measure of religious freedom (there are communities of Christians and Jews). Old and new ways are in constant conflict: "All the current signs indicate that the Islamic Republic is not likely to survive in its current form." --John J. Miller

        Book Description

Robin Wright has reported from over 120 countries for many leading news organizations, but her perceptive coverage of Iran has garnered her the most respect and praise among her colleagues. In The Last Great Revolution, Wright meticulously describes the ongoing transformation of society, politics and religion that ranges from the empowerment of women to the blossoming of a movie industry and an independent press. She demonstrates why Iran's Islamic revolution equals the French and Russian revolutions in new ideas and impact, while standing alone as "the last great revolution" of the modern era.

        2 out of 5 stars Iran.......2006-03-23

This book was out of touch with reality in Iran. The author of the book was expressing that theology state of Iran was going through transformation and the state was becoming more liberal minded. The author forgot that the theology state of Iran {IRI} would not change their policies. These rules of God could not be change.

        1 out of 5 stars Shameless!!!!!.......2004-06-07

Robin Wright is known to many Iranians as a Mullah Apologist. In this book, she continues her delusional commentaries on the status of the Islamic regime in Iran. What baffles me is why she did not mention anything about the widespread use of torture, murder, summery execution, and other sadistic tactics of the Mullahs to suppress opposition. As an Iranian, I am disgusted by people like Robin Wright who become partners in the crime of the Islamic regime by defending them in exchange for favors.

The Islamic regime in Iran is one of the most brutal dictatorships ever known to man. Robin Wright has done the people of Iran injustice by putting a good face on the Islamic regime.

        Shame on her.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched book and wel written.......2004-06-05

As an Iranian myself I enjoy reading books by Western authors on Iran more than by Iranian authors. The reason for this preference of mine is because I have found that Iranians can never let go of their personal feelings/situation/experience when discussing the revolution and the aftermath.
While Robin Wright may not be 100% right on everything she has a good understanding of Iran and she shows it in the book. It is exemplified by the fact that she uses Crane Brinton's theories on revolution from 'The Anatomy of Revolution' in explaining how the Iranian revolution has shown the same characteristics that Brinton discussed. Anyone who wants to understand a revolution must read Brinton's book and I was glad and impressed that Robin Wright had done so.
While many Iranians who dislike the current government will blast her for the good that she writes about, and the pro-government Iranians will blast her for the bad that she mentions; Robin Wright has written an excellent book well worth reading, even if you don't agree with it.
I hope she continues to write on Iran and hope the quality of her work continues to be outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Not the Iran we all think we know..........2003-01-27

Americans have a pretty bleak picutre of Iranian society fixed in their heads. And who can blame them? The turmoil after the shah's exile, the hostage crises, the war with Iraq, chadors, Salman Rushdie, and a many other similar problems in Iranian society do not exactly conform to American values. Well, that was then and this is now. Iran is changing. It has changed. The country that told it's people to go forth and multiply now requires classes on birth control before marriage. Vesectomys are given out free by the state. Even abortion is allowed in certain cases (health and monetary problems). The Catholics aren't even that progressive! Social change is gripping Iran. The new Generation of student protestors aren't capturing Americans, they are fighting against the conservative forces in their own government. They aren't calling for a second revolution or a return to the Shah's times. They want reform. And they are, alebit more slowly then most Americans would prefer, winning. Mohammad Khatami, president of Iran, won with 70% of the vote on a strong reformist platform. Wright's books is required reading for anyone who wants to understand this new Iran.

        4 out of 5 stars Accurate.......2002-02-06

As an Iranian who were present on most of the events , I very much recommend this book. Ms. Wright has writen the book with a very clear lens without any prejudice.

          Book Description

Are human rights gaining or losing ground? This question has become relevant after two decades of unprecedented progress in developing human rights standards and institutions. The political climate during the Cold War created many obstacles, but the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and its aftermath during the following decade created a sense of promise and progress among human rights scholars and actors.

Yet, today, actions, statements and initiatives questioning the legitimacy and validity of human rights, or even threatening their very existence, have become a regular part of current political realities, even in states traditionally dedicated to the rule of law. This would have been inconceivable ten or twenty years ago. At the political level human rights are gaining as well as losing ground.

The question of the adequacy, legitimacy and scope of human rights is still a live one. And weaknesses in supra-national human rights protection systems have emerged over the last twenty years. It is now clear that human rights mechanisms are not well adapted to the handling of the ever-increasing number of complaints or to the effective implementation of human rights.

This thought-provoking collection of essays by leading scholars and practitioners in the field of human rights explores the ways in which human rights are currently being challenged and weakened, but also strengthened in important and groundbreaking ways in different areas and settings. They explore the many current debates which centre on human rights concerns: debates about secularism and religious norms, about minimum social standards and social security, about the future regulation of citizenship, about prison reform and the use of less inhumane methods of detention; as well as the reform of the UN system and the challenges facing the now overburdened European Court of Human Rights.
