The key to healthy relationships.......2002-08-05
I recommend Tell Me No Lies for every couple because it is a guide for obtaining the ideal relationship. Yet even if one's relationship with a partner is far from ideal, many insights found here are useful for directing communication away from defensiveness and towards honesty and openness. The authors cover a broad range of scenarios that may occur involving personal goals, parenting, financial issues, etc. A couple's interactions with each other also influences their relationships with friends and family members. Recognizing and addressing our own bad habits, even the little ones that we tend to justify or disregard, is one of the most helpful steps we can take. This book is also helpful in recognizing when one's partner is being dishonest and in learning steps to get through to the real problem that is being covered up. While offering practical approaches, the authors are realistic about the difficulty of this process and explain why it is important for the relationship that we face this fear. Overcoming barriers while using compassion and sensitivity ultimately promotes healing and growth within both the self and the couple. Reading Tell Me No Lies serves as a powerful reminder to be honest with ourselves in order to be honest with our partner and have a win-win relationship.
a primer for sharing the truth.......2002-01-04
This is the book that I should have read years ago. Dr.s Bader and Pearson use a lively case study method. They introduce several couples and then draw you into their personal stories. You're hooked, you want to finish the book to see how each couple finally resolves their problem.
In addition, they distill years of experience into a well organized presentation about how truth and lying are seen and manipulated in marriage. Epiphanies exploded around me as I discovered how I had obstructed the truth and lied to my wife. Awareness also grew about how she had denied the truth to herself and how I had enabled her to do that.
By the time this review makes it online, my own marriage of 16 years will have ended in divorce. It's a sad thing, but in trying to make the best one can out of these kind of situations I have sent a copy of the book to my ex-wife. Hopefully, she will learn something too.
The book highlighted several ironies about truth; for example, it requires two people to tell a lie, and it requires two people to witness the truth (to say it and to hear it). One interesting and important point that the book addresses is when the truth should be shared. Generally, if the truth is going to be shared and if it will cause pain, then the person telling the truth must judge whether they are telling that truth just to hurt the other person. Or, and this is a very big IF, if they are ready to take responsibility and repair the damage. The former suggests that the truth not be shared, the latter does.
It's a lively, easy read. I found highlighting the most relevant sections to be very useful and easy to do. If you have a problem with truth in your relationship or want to prevent one, I would highly suggest this book. Buy two, one for you and your partner.

If you think small-town life can be boring--think again. There are complex social rules: there are certain people with whom you fraternize and those you don't, and, of course, there is the all-powerful gossip. Everyone knows everything about everyone else. She's ready for change, and the first thing she's going to do is divorce her no-good, philandering husband Brent. But then everything goes haywire: Brent turns up dead, Maddie's daughter wants a dog, her best friend is suddenly acting very strange, and Maddie's secret boyhood crush, bad boy C. L. Sturgis, arrives in town after a 20-year hiatus--and he's as sexy as ever. You may laugh out loud at the wild and crazy antics in Jennifer Crusie's exceptional novel, but you'll exclaim with delight over the sizzling, dynamic, passionate affair between Maddie and her first love, C. A hit in any league.......2007-08-27
TELL ME LIES is a terrific book, whether you're looking for romance, humor or suspense. The characters have depth, the dialogue is witty and the plot really moves along. Many of the situations are laugh-out-loud funny and the relationships are particularly well-drawn. This one is a keeper and I find myself returning to reread it, just for the pleasure of it.
One other thing: This book is WRITTEN - that is, Crusie doesn't skimp on words and expect the reader to pay for lots of white space, as many authors seem to do as they get more popular. Hurrah for her!
Very entertaining - couldn't put it down!.......2007-06-15
This is my favorite Crusie book so far. It has everything - cheating husbands, gossiping towns, meddling mothers, vulgar grandmothers, murder, and old flames - quite the guilty pleasure! Read it - you won't be dissappointed! Be prepared to stay up until 2am to finish it though. :)
Satisfying read.......2007-01-09
This is the first book I've read from this author and I liked it. Not the best, but I'll probably read another one by her in the future. I like that there was a suspense added to it. Not the same as other chiclit I've read.
Good ol' Crusie!.......2006-08-29
After reading a few books leaning more toward the serious side lately, I found myself in the mood to curl up with a good, light hearted chick-lit novel, unfortunately, the chick-lit I've been reading as of late has been pretty bad. I'd gotten tired of reading about the fashion editor of a major magazine based in London or New York looking for love in all the wrong places, the stories have gotten old and repetitive. So I decided to turn to an old favorite, who I knew would not let me down...Jennifer Cruise! Sure enough 'TELL ME LIES' was just what I needed to lift me out of the chick-lit doldrums! Crusie's standard mixture of mystery and romance always make for an interesting read but it is her humor and wit that keep faithful readers such as myself coming back for more. If you are a fan of chick-lit and have not read anything by Cruise I urge you to do so, just pick one, any one...you can't go wrong!
First Jennifer Cruise book I ever read. Hilarious Great chick-lit! perfect for summer! romance + mystery + chick-lit!.......2006-05-18
Basically this is a story about a lady growing up in a very small gossipy town (called Frog Point) and she discovers her husband is cheating and her whole life gets thrown into a crazy whirl-wind within the period of oh about 3 days. total insanity. no lie. we're talking infidelity, murder, lust, spying, secrets, lies, and truth, and the WHOLE town gets flipped up-side down.
It's not really a romance novel - but it's more like a really funny book w/ great sex in it. It's more about the heroine re-inventing herself and dealing w/ all her issues, and her romance w/ the hunky guy she lost her virginity to 20 years prior is also conveniently swirled into the story - a lot of the issues in this book are NOT funny or romantic AT ALL.....reading about a little girl trying to cope with divorce and loss of love was very very very heart-breaking. This book shouldn't be Tell Me Lies but Keep a Secret The heroine discovers so many majors secret that I was even stunned when the bomb dropped in the plot.
Why I liked this book: It was a page turner for me. I got sucked into the drama of it like a soap opera. The characters are ordinary everyday crazy people - no dukes and princesses here. Plus it was funny, and the witty-ness of it reminded me A LOT of chick-lit but with sizzling sex scenes thrown in. So if you also LOVE chick-lit, be sure to check out Jennifer Cruise.
Book Description
Prison scandals, terrorism, corporate fraud, election rigging—most likely you have heard something of the sort in the last ten minutes. But what is truth and what is part of the great “washout” of biased reporting? A celebration of lucid investigative reporting, selected by titan of the craft John Pilger, could come at no better moment.
Pilger’s book travels through contemporary history, from war correspondent Martha Gelhorn’s wrenching 1945 account of the liberation of Dachau to Edward R. Murrow’s groundbreaking excavation of McCarthyism to recent coverage of the war in Iraq. This homage to brave, often unsettling coverage features a range of great writing, from Seymour Hersh’s Vietnam-era muckraking to Eric Schlosser’s exposé of the fast-food industry to preeminent theorist Edward Said’s writing on Islam and terrorism.
Unrepentant in its mission to expose the truth behind the messages that politicians, warmongers, and corporate-run media inculcate, Tell Me No Lies is essential for anyone who wants to understand the world around them objectively and intelligently. It’s not just a collection of high-quality reporting, but a call-to-arms to all who believe in honesty and justice for humanity.

Integrity in Journalism.......2006-01-27
While everyone is talking about integrity in our government, someone needs to look at the so-called "watch dogs" of government and how they became the fourth arm of government. Yes, the press. Tell Me No Lies, talks about a few rare journalists who told their stories and sometimes sacrificed a great deal as a result. The stories they tell are not pretty and shouldn't be read unless you are willing to believe them. Most of them have been told over and over, but people tend to forget them. They need to be read again so people are reminded.
We already know the federal government is trying to take all the power from the legislative branch of the government and the legislative branch appears to be willing to hand it over to the executive branch irregardless of the long-range consequences. And in turn our Judicial Branch appears to be willing to politicize itself to the point it wants to allow the Executive Branch to have more power than it was ever intended to have. In other words, we are walking into a dictatorship.
This book is a warning of what a democracy really is. It's a fragile balance between the three branches of government with a FREE PRESS that is not afraid to criticize, confront or tell the people of this country what in fact, the country is doing in the name of freedom when it kills people overseas in order to maintain its influence and keep "communism" out of areas when the threat was less real except in the minds of the politicians back here. Even the military that have to fight the wars speak up because they are there and are training thugs to do the dirty work to uphold dictators.
This book tells it all. The relationship between Reagan and Thatcher, for instance, when Iran/Contra got hot and Reagan asked Thatcher to take over in Cambodia and the British soldiers did the bulk of the training of Pol Pot types while the United States was busy in Iran/Contra and then trying to get out of trouble for getting caught.
It makes the reader really question whether or not this country really believes in democracy the way it really proclaims it does. Without a free press, there is no democracy. The press is as important to a democracy as is the right to vote or to assemble or to lobby our congresspeople or Senators, etc. Do not hand it over to corporations like we do everything else as in health care.
It needs to be read by everyone, particularly in this country. But also in the United Kingdom, our "cousins" who share in our foreign policy dirty work.

Based on true life unsolved Russian mystery.......2006-06-25
This is another romantic suspense novel. It involves a 13 year old suicide-or was it a suicide? A beautiful, wealthy woman with lots of secrets, a cop who is trying to raise his orphaned niece and nephew are just a few of the characters that keep you turning the pages.
This book is based on an unsolved Russian mystery. A fast read perfect for a plane or the beach or poolside.
Not her best work.......2005-04-02
Other reviews on this book are very thorough. It was a good story but it got a little bogged down with info. Solomon's best bet is "blind curve". It is excellent..
An Interesting And Good Story!.......2005-02-09
Ms. Solomon's "Tell Me No Lies" is a story within a story and one that was very good. She has taken a real life event and worked it to her advantage. The reader is than treated to a Russian mystery that has to this day not yet been solved.
Alexsandra Jane Baker has one goal in life. That is to see her father's honor restored. In order to do that she plays a deadly game of cat and mouse with a former KGB agent turned corporate exec. Things are going well and until a local man is killed and what should have been a open and shut case of robbery turned bad becomes a whole lot more when Detective Hank Bonner enters the picture.
Hank is getting to retire from police work in order to take care of his family obligation. He just wants to get on with his life. What he doesn't want in the new murder case that he was just handed. Especially when it comes with an additional challenge in the form of Alexsandera Jane Baker. She is keeping a secret and he knows that it will be a key part in his murder investigation. Will she ever trust him enough to tell him what he needs to know before more bodies turn up dead?
There is a secondary storyline involving Hank and his niece and nephew is also very good and goes a long way to helping flesh out Hank's character. This is very good book and I would have given it a higher rating but at times Ms. Solomon bogged down the read with so much detail. As a result this reader found herself being pulled out of a situation in order to focus on details that may not have been that important. Overall this was a fast paced read that I have no problems recommending.

Good. Not great. .......2004-10-31
I actually bought this book by accident, mistaking it for another with a same title. I don't regret buying it, as it was an enjoyable read. The story was fast paced, and kept me reading through all the way. The author is also very talented at actually creating the general atmosphere surrounding the whole story. You can feel the loneliness that Alex has had to live through, the desperation she felt after her protector/ friend is murdered. But to me, the best thing is that there is an actual sense of danger present: not just the 'I don't feel safe, so hold me' kind of fluff.
The thing that made me give this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the general lack of affection and passion between Hank and Alex. You can see it through the dialogue and what passes between them through the book, but it's pretty bland otherwise. No hot blooded romance here, just carefully phrased words, thoughts and actions that show they are attracted and care deeply about each other. In a way, it's a very sweet romance.
This book is good, enjoyable and easy to read but it's not great or a favourite for keeps or anything. Hope this helps some.
I loved it!.......2004-07-11
Annie Solomon has done it again! This is the best yet. She keeps you interested in the characters, rooting for them and helping us find a little bit of ourselves in each of them. What better place for a mystery than an orchard that is sweet with the scents of fresh fruit and hidden by the shadows of the trees. You will become an Annie Solomon fan with this, her newest book, Enjoy!

Tell Me No Lies, Part 2.......2006-10-04
Will The Past Ever Die?, September 20, 2006
Reviewer: Betty Burks (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews
Julie return to the small town where her grandfather had been accused of a crime, Cooperville, Washington, to pain murals on the sides of historical buildings. The cover shows a scene which could be Middlesboro,
Kentucky, or even Franklin, Tennessee, except for the snow-capped mountain in the background. I guess many little towns look somewhat alike. Franklin was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, just south of Nashville, where 7,000 Confederates died and 2,500 Union troops perished. The monument to this historic happening was erected in 1899 in Franklin's town square. In the South, we all have such -- where I lived, it was Sam Davis. This one looks like Jack's uncle
who lives there today. Julie tried to keep her family history a secret so she could fulfill her wish to contribute to the community which had judged her ancestor wrongly.
The job was almost finished as was her romance with the banker's son,
Gregory, when an old resident confessed that it was he who had doctored
the books of the bank to steal the money to pay his gambling debts and had killed the bank president -- not her grandfather, who was upright and just with all. The happy ending is like Romeo and Juliet and 'West Side Story' of the two lovers being from the wrong families to merge. She found her fate, and he became less demanding that he was always right. With me, it just goes on and on as those fellows have started their junk again and it is twice as much. Some humans are not very humane or forgiving. They have to prove their point and be the 'professional.' Julie was a professional artist, and Gregory had been against the project as he wanted the money used for more historic settings. He must be a
politician. Story ended, case closed. To be happy ever after is the name of this game.
Just plain bad.......2006-06-02
I bought this because I loved Captive Passions from the seventies which, believe me is a MUCH MUCH better romance. This one is tricked up with the same rape and gore but has the guy doing the bad stuff. Read Captive Passions instead because you can like that hero. This is just awful
Sensual and captivating........2006-04-30
This was an amazing story of romance that was also full of suspensful events that kept me involved to the very end. I felt for the characters, and spent the whole book praying for a happy ending. The author has dreamed up, and commited to paper characters I couldn't help likng, or sympathizing with. This is a truly moving love story, and the trials and tribulations that the characters experience only make the ending more enjoyable.
People like this Rubbish!!.......2006-02-23
After reading some reviews on Amazon about this book I thought... hmm some people really like it (it's four star rating) yet many think its horrible - i think i'll give it a go... It can't really be that bad can it? -
WELL IT WAS! Don't waste your money or your time on this one... From the opening page to the part where I threw the book, was absolutely rubbish. I have been an avid historical romance book reader for over ten years... and it takes alot for me not to finish a book - I skimmed the whole end half of this one... I don't know how they could be in love with each other as they didn't have too many intellectual conversations... Lust not Love I think... Don't let the cover suck you in - it goes downhill fast after you open the first page.

Customer Reviews:
Great Plot.......2004-09-25
Very interesting plot. As with all Lowell's books the language is highly offensive That's why I don't read her books regularly. If not for the language I would have given It 5 Stars.
Better than the Title.......2004-05-01
I was put off by the title of this book, I guess Trust No One was taken. And I had to overlook the cover notes that said it was about Chinese art. I know nothing about the Chinese and thought I would get lost in a book about an ex-CIA operative in Asia. I was wrong. Before I completed the book I had spent happy hours on the internet looking for information on the art described in the novel and photos of the charioteer. Of course, a few years have passed since the book was written and the art is more accessable now, but for 20 years almost no one outside China saw these incredible bronze works. I learned a lot.
Aside from the intrique this book is hot. Lowell works the familar formula of ex-CIA undercover guy hero in a way that is credible. And Lindsay, our heroine, is not a virgin or 20 years old. She is an independent woman with a life of her own. She and our hero do not fall into bed the first night, it takes them weeks to determine what they want. The are partners, they are forced to live together, eat together, and have conversations. Doing the job they get to know each other, and eventually they deliberately consumate their relationship.
I recommend this book as the best I have read by Lowell and one of the best by any romance writer. Romance/suspense novels are uneven. I have yet to find a consistent writer who satisfies in everytime. I doubt that I will. This book has an unusual balance that is a surprise. I loved it.
Great Book.......2003-10-28
EL's Tell Me No Lies is a fantastic book. I absolutely loved it. Could not put it down. I bought this book from a second hand book store and was planning to sell it later. I think I will keep it and read it later.
The hero Catlin is wonderful - strong yet compassionate. He is hard with everyone except the heroine Lindsay. It's nice to read a book of EL (unlike her earlier books) where the hero doesn't treat the heroine badly. Lindsay brings out the best in Catlin. His gentleness with her is so romantic. Even when he has to be firm with Lindsay and the events happening around them inadvertently cause her hurt, Catlin lovingly takes care of her.
Lindsay herself is no pushover. As a heroine, she doesn't irritate. Though she is naive and vunerable, she has what it takes to go through the bad times and at the same time heal Catlin with her love and passion.
A great book and certainly a keeper
A great ride, but a bit convoluted.......2003-09-17
The story is interesting, the characters are compelling, the atmosphere and history are very engaging, but ultimately there are just a few to many twists and turns for this book to make much sense.
Truth and lies.......2002-03-15
This is a Elizabeth Lowell reprint, but one I enjoy the most. The story revolves around possible stolen bronzes from China and the possibility of US/China relations breakdown if the bronzes are found in the US.
Lindsey Danner is being used by the FBI and both sides of China politics in a bid to break or keep relations with US. Her reputation for always being able to tell the true from fake bronzes is one reason everyone wants her. Her total rock solid refusal to lie about a bronze puts her in danger; if she is brought in to identify the stolen bronzes and they are found to be real, relations will break. So, some chinese politicians definitely want her dead.
In comes the Dragon, Jacob MacArthur Catlin, late of the CIA. He is brought in to pay off an old debt to a chinese family. Catlin is to protect Lindsey from everyone and to be her "guide" during an FBI sting to recover the bronzes. However, during the sting, Catlin and Lindsey are to act as lovers. Lindsey finds acting as Catlin's lover hard since she is a truthfull person. As the sting goes on, it becomes harder and harder to tell the truth from lies. Is Catlin attracted to her? or is it the act?
This is a very riviting and steamy novel. As always, I love the culture, history, and behind the scenes of Lowell's characters' professions. It is always a learning experience reading a Lowell novel for me.
So enjoy "Tell Me No Lies"...

BET ME.......2005-01-05
Such a witty and romantic novel has made me love each and every character in her book...the way her discriptions of the characters feelings are so true and believable and most of all very romantic which every woman wants in her life. Keep up the great job!
Amazing........2004-04-05
I have to say, im not usually a fan of romantic novels, but i came across a magazine advertisement of Tell Me Lies. Since i was making a trip to the library anyway, i figured i'd check it out and see if i liked it. I absolutely fell in love with it. I love Jennifer Crusie's style of writing. I continued to check out her books one by one and I became more and more devoted to her characters. They seem so real and alive. People that I can relate to, not those perfect heroines that you usually find in novels. Two thumbs up. Keep it up, Jennifer.
Sadly, this set is only average!.......2004-02-08
Being the romantic reader that I have become through the past few years (and bored with all the same old same old) a friend suggested I purchase this set by Jennifer Crusie. Sadly, I was disappointed. The stories are average at best. I was expecting something grand...the joke was on me. Ms. Cruise is an okay writer but far from sizzling! DISAPPOINTED!

Struck a note with me!.......2007-08-15
Have 2 copies, one to keep, one to share. Spent hours in Museum of Asias at Smithsonian looking an ancient Chinese bronzes. Am fascinated with Lowell's portrayals of Chinese politics in all her books. They just feel so spot on. And I love the detail and imagination she uses in her descriptions of art objects.
Please!.......2006-08-22
There was more unneeded detail in this book than I have seen in a long time. The author, whom I have read frequently, was so wrapped up in showing a painful amount of knowledge on bronze that she lost the thread of the story. In addition, did anyone ever explain to her that a person could look totally hooked on a man without literally falling all over him in public? I guess not. I could have put up with that, but when I finally got to the last page, I didn't even bother to pass the book to a friend. Not wanting to have by head bashed by the book, I simply threw it away.
What a waste.
Reissue from 1986, but good .......2006-04-13
Just a heads-up--this is not a new book. It was originally published in 1986. A nice balance of romance and action, it reminds me most of Lowell's Donovan series (Amber Beach/Jade Island/Pearl Cove/Midnight in Ruby Bayou).
Loved this story.......2006-03-15
Having read a ton of Elizabeth Lowell novels, this was one of her best. I thought Lindsay and Catlin had hot, explosive chemistry together. The background information on Chinese bronzes was just enough to interest you. Sometimes, Ms. Lowell goes a little overboard with info in other books. The tension as Lindsay fell deeper into the seedy world of forgery and stolen art and international politics was so high that you could personally feel her pain and wondered if she would ever be the same. Great ending!!! Overall: A.

If you love action, drama, suspense and steamy love scenes, then this book is perfect. Lowell doesn't skip a beat! I have read this book three times already and still can't get enough of it! Not only does she put in a love story, it isn't what dominates the novel. One learns interesting and new facts about Bronzes and international trade and relations. With all the new facts you learn, you'll be rewarded many times over. A must read!
