Everything I need to know.......2007-08-23
After killing a peach tree and three cherry trees, I decided I better try to find out what I did wrong.
This book is pointing the error of my ways. It has all I need to know.
The Backyard Orchardist: A Complete guide to Growing Fruit Trees in the Home Garden.......2007-05-12
Great! This book contains essential common sense information for growing fruit trees in a easy to read format.
Growing fruit trees.......2007-04-05
This book exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend it for anyone who wants to grow fruit for their own consumption. Other books we've tried to read were much too technical and always intended for commercial growers. Stella Otto's book is clear, concise, and chock-full of information. We loved it and feel confident we will now be able to better tend our 10 fruit trees.
Read it, but a word of caution........2007-01-01
This book is a great place to get started, and to finish if you live in USDA climate zones 8, 7, 6, ..., 1. But those of us who live in "low chill" winters, and low-heat summers: southern california, mid-to-southern florida, coastal climates with marine layers -- you need to digest this book and read further about what works in your area.
Very Informative.......2006-08-20
I found this book very informative and comprehensive in answering my questions and concerns with my trees and how to care for and protect them. I highly recommend reading this book to others who have equal concerns and interest in the care of fruit trees.

Great Book!.......2006-03-13
This is a terrific book. I purchased it with the companion book on Animals. It is a "must have" for anyone interested in art, biology, or just a good coffee table book. It will keep youngsters quiet for hours with the facinating illustrations. Very high quality. You just can't beat the price either. I highly recommend it. You, too, can be botanically correct!

ASIN: 089288276X |
Book Description
Volume V, the final volume of Thunder Over the Ochoco covers ther period of 1880 and 1916. Rifle shots echoed the length and breadth of the Deschutes canyon as the Hill-Harriman railroad giants battled to link central Oregon to the outside world.
The birth of industry would give vent to new bloodshed in the Ochoco. Six-shooters roared in the night, ranchers disappeared never to be seen again... and the juniper trees bore fruit: the dangling bullet-ridden bodies of men whose only crime was to oppose the land barons who ruled old Crook County with a Winchester rifle and a rawhide rope. As the 19th century staggered to a close, a Shoshoni visionary born in the Ochoco foretold the rebirth of Indian supremacy. His wondrous dream was buried in a common grave at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. By the time the 20th century blundered onto the scene, saddle-blanket blazes hacked into the Ochoco pines marked the deadlines between sheep and cattle range and woe unto him who crossed these barriers.
Ironically, the last Indian war fought in the United States would explode on the Oregon-Nevada border in 1911 when a Shoshoni chief led his followers, armed only with bows and arrows, in a suicidal charge against a group of stockmen. Thus ended the Thunder Over the Ochoco.
Would the new owners do a better job of managing the land they had wrenched from the Shoshoni? I leave that to other writers to decide.

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat incoherent and proposes to use a lot of chemicals.......2007-08-16
I was pretty disappointed with this book. There`s a lot of methods described to make more plants, but I don`t feel any of them is described in a lot of depth. Furthermore, the author uses a LOT of chemicals when growing and propagating plants, which is something I feel opposed to as a organic grower. I really can`t see why this book was elected one of the 75 best books by The American Horticultural Society?
Packed With Useful Information! =].......2006-07-13
My mum turned me on to plants when I was quite young, and I had tried to read some of the horticulture books that she had in her library (boring!). I bought this book for myself, because I wanted to learn more about propagation, so at first, I did not think this book would be much help since I prefer hard covers to paperback (personal choice), but even before I finished reading it, I was putting some of what I had read to use, and have on numerous occasions been asked questions that I could answer thanks to this books information. This book is full of useful information on how-to that you can put to use almost immediately, and it is not a dull read.
I have recently had a co-worker and a close friend of mine ask me about grafting, and I have referred them to this book. My friend liked the material on grafting that I spoke with him about so much that he wants to borrow my book for more information on the subject, and I have since put another copy of this book on my wish list to give it to him as a gift for his library.
Home Gardener.......2000-07-31
I really like this book. I love to grow plants from seeds and this book helps me understand how that works and how I can grow even more things from seeds. As well as grafting and other techniques I've never tried. It is a bit technical, but I am only a home gardener so it's pretty easy to work out.

ASIN: 0930031806 |
Amazon.com
This is the delightful story of the resurgence in urban community gardening, describing the rehabilitation of jail inmates through raising organic vegetables, teaching inner city youngsters where food comes from, and laying out an inspirational plan to help all of us world-worn urbanites get involved once again in raising delicious food in the midst of our paved-over, formerly bleak, urban landscapes. This is about making the World a Better Place, about getting our fingers in the dirt, touching our planet with loving hands, and creating a vision of hope for our cities and our children.

Book Description
An essential new resource for gardeners.
"In my experience of growing and writing about plants for 45 years, the first question people intemperate climates ask about an unfamiliar plant is whether it is hardy."
-from the Introduction
What is a hardy plant? What is a hardiness zone? What conditions affect hardiness? Gardening expert Derek Fell answers these and other questions of gardeners living in a temperate climate. He challenges strict adherence to the zone system and encourages readers to explore their garden's microclimates. Doing so can add two or three zones to a plant hardiness rating.
Encyclopedia of Hardy Plants is a comprehensive reference organized by plant type. Its easy-to-use directory format provides quick retrieval of specific data on over 700 recommended plants. Along with full color photographs of favorite annuals, bulbs, herbs, perennials, shrubs, trees, vegetables, fruits and nuts, the author includes:
- Botanical and common names
- Zone ratings
- Height, width and growth habits
- Flower, fruit, vegetable and nut production
- Suggested uses
- Soil, water and sunlight requirements
- Planting tips and combinations
- Preferred species and hybrids.
Encyclopedia of Hardy Plants provides a combination of observations, expertise and master photographs. This new book is a resource that gardeners will use again and again for its thoroughness, accessibility and reliability.

Customer Reviews:
Really helped us out with our new place.......2004-04-17
We recently bought a small farm and orchard and were simply overwhelmed about what to do with the fruit trees. Fortunately for us, the local feed store was selling this great little book. It covers the essentials for successful grafting and budding, includes the info needed so that the proper tools are acquired and/or used, when to do the different types of grafting and budding, as well as the definitions of the various types of grafting.
A Ripoff for Orchardists.......2003-10-04
This book is a 32-page flimsy pamphlet of the kind that your local Agricultural Extension Service often gives away for free.
There is a paucity of information, no pictures, poor hand-drawn graphics, no mention of anything of value to southern farmers. NO mention of air-layering, and NO compatibility tables for different types of fruit. Egad.

Customer Reviews:
A classic.......2007-08-10
No one - no one, should study dendrology in the northeastern US without this book. It is an absolutely essential reference. At the price for this book, even new, you can't afford to be without it.
Buy a copy now...you need it!
If you can only have one winter key, this is it.......2006-01-31
This is one of three winter keys I use on a regular basis. I work at a botanical garden, but I'm not a botanist. I find it easy to use, and fairly comprehensive.
It uses B/W photos instead of line drawings- this works great for the fruit key. For the twig key, drawings might have been clearer, but it's still very good.
The first ten pages cover the terminology used in the rest of the book, and are a good introduction.
There are seperate indexes for common & scientific name. One caveat: each of the two sections (twig, fruit) has its own set of indexes.
When I brought this key to work, both my boss (a horticulturalist) and our head gardener ( a botanist ) produced well-worn copies of their own, so it's been around awhile, and has stood the test of time.
What to do till spring comes.......2003-03-24
If you're a tyro or a practiced botanist, you'll find this helpful. Take it along on walks in the dreary seasons, and you'll find a wealth of fascinating things to keep you busy bushwatching. Easy to use and not too technical.
a technical field guide.......1999-05-14
This is the guide I take with me on walks in the winter, when all the leaves are off the oak forest here in southeast Massachusetts. To be honest, I haven't had an opportunity to use the fruit key yet. Remember that this book is ONLY a key, so you'll need other references to learn. I've found the key to be technical and a bit unwieldy on occasion, but by the same token, it's opened a new level of detail to my observation: an eye loupe comes along for those walks...
