Book Description
Poor Lee! He used to be a jazzman who could make the piano go yimbatimba- TANGzang-zang. But now he's lost his hearing, and the bandleader had to let him go.
So Lee goes to a school for the deaf to learn sign language. There, he meets Max, who used to play the sax. Riding the subway to class, they start signing about all the songs they love. A bass player named Rose joins in and soon they've got a little sign language band. And in no time they're performing for audiences in the subway, night after night.
Living legend and Kennedy Center honoree Pete Seeger, renowned poet Paul DuBois Jacobs, and Coretta Scott King honor winner R. Gregory Christie present a jazzy riff on the power of music, overcoming obstacles, and all the different ways to hear the world. So, who will listen to a deaf musician? Everyone!

Book Description
This is the jazzy story of a hip, saxophone playing cat who heads to the big city to seek fame and fortune. Once there, he finds that the top dogs own the cool clubs, and that sometimes you have to work at the Doggie Diner to make ends meet. But he also learns how important it is to "do what you love to do and do it well!" The rhythmic text is filled with the same ebb and flow that characterizes jazz music, and the brilliant illustrations bring alive a magical world where cool cats dig hot jazz and where, if you try hard enough, no dream is out of reach.
Customer Reviews:
Groovy book, fun for kids.......2007-06-07
My 2 and 4 year olds love this book! The phrasing is fun. The colors bright. The story about persevering to realize your talent, even when it means eating at all the doggy diners when you're a cat. Though it never says so, the city is clearly San Francisco. So, go, cat, go! Buy the book!
Jazz transcribed to text and illustrations.......2003-08-07
A determined, jazzy cat tries to, and finally succeeds to, make music in a dog-run city, letting the reader see the importance of persevering even in tribulations. The impressionistic, curving illustrations that bleed to the edge every page, as well as the beat poem rhythm of the text, flow together to give the reader an understanding of what jazz is about: improvisation and expression of feelings. Even the placement of the text itself, which sometimes swirls, sometimes indents, and sometimes changes fonts, suggests the unpredictability of jazz music.
Hip Cat.......2000-08-05
This is one of the most amazing children's books I have ever read. Jonathan London is able to convert prose into music. You have a sense of being inside jazz and understanding what it is from a completely emotional standpoint. I was thrilled to have the pleasure of reading this book to my 5 year old son and to introduce him to what jazz feels like. We listened to several Jazz albums after reading this book and the book helped to make a connection to the music. Thank you, Thank you Mr. London for this incredible experience!
Cool Jazz..........2000-07-24
This book is definitely hard to get into, but once you do, you're hooked. The jazz theme is awesome (although I wouldn't have chosen a cat...) and the pictures are brilliant. What a great picture book!
Hip Cat-Jazz Is His Bag!.......2000-07-08
This Reading Rainbow Book, Hip Cat, by Jonathan London and illustrated by Woodleigh Hubbard is a refreshing introduction to the lyrical and "cool" genre of jazz music for the young child. It gives them the opportunity to experience with words and visuals a character who desires to make his livelihood by doing what he enjoys best! The story is dedicated to Herschel Silverman, jazz poet, Bobby McFerrin, scat man, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Young learners, hopefully, will come away with a heightened idea of self-awareness as it relates to career choices and a greater level of endurance to make of their lives what they choose. Oobie-do John the Sax Man Scat Man, the cool cat man, realizes his love for making jazzy music on his saxophone. Others enjoy his craft and his pay is peanuts and applause. Oobie-do needs more to survive. He doesn't give up finding a good gig, one that will feed him and pay his bills. Persistence and perfecting his craft win him a just reward.
Teacher Note: Excellent opportunity to integrate language, music and rhyme. Students can also meet and greet jazz greats via musical listening/movement experiences. A real opportunity to submerge classroom experiences into "multiple-intelligences" mode. Another recommended book is Willie Jerome by Alice Faye Duncan.

Customer Reviews:
The Polly Parker Stories.......2005-12-27
I am really shocked that this first rate Fitzgerald collection does not have the "Polly Parker" stories that originally were printed serially in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST in 1922. Apparently these uncollected stories remain unavailable anywhere in book form.
Polly Parker was a typical Fitzgerald heroine -- a blue-eyed flapper with a pert nose and golden hair bobbed very short. The reason her stories are omitted, I gather, is that they were slightly more sexual in tone and also addressed taboo subjects such as alcoholism, racial violence, incest, and insanity.
"GRANDPA'S GOLD" the first Polly story, deals with lasting echoes of the Civil War. Spoiled Polly goes to Vermont for the summer to stay with her aging grandfather -- the last remaining Union army veteran in Vermont. Ultimately she robs him of a small fortune in gold coins which he had originally intended to donate to a Negro orphanage. This story highlights Fitzgerald's ambivalence towards the young women of the day -- Polly is cruel and selfish, but also winningly spontaneous, free and independent. Fitzgerald's racism is in full flower here as well. The fact that she is "only" robbing colored people seems to make her crime an amusing prank rather than a vicious crime.
"ALLIGATOR QUEEN" is both darker and more sophisticated. Polly is a houseguest in Georgia, where she meets Eleanor Hiss, a jazz age siren who may or may not have negro blood. The two girls deliberately lead a young Harvard man out into quicksand, then go joy riding in his car while he slowly drowns. Fitzgerald later wrote that Eleanor seduced Polly in an early draft -- but in 1922 the SATURDAY EVENING POST would never have carried a story with an explicit lesbian seduction.
"HOLY MATRIMONY" is the ironic finale to the Polly Parker stories. Invited on a weekend yachting party, Polly is compromised by an Eastern Prince and forced to marry silent movie star Reginald Dashwood. Dashwood is a homosexual who needs "discreet companionship." Polly marries him, assuming he is a pushover, but instead he is cruel, domineering and controlling -- and aided by an iron-willed mother who treats Polly like a servant. Polly's "punishment" is ironic, since she now has unlimited wealth and a dazzling husband -- but no freedom and no hope of either sexual or spiritual release.
Taken together, these three stories represent Fitzgerald's darkest early work -- and they should be included in any "definitive" collection.
Short Stories.......2002-09-12
I bought this book for the short stories. They are like small diamonds on a necklace, sparkling in a row, each one a wonder. Fitzgerald's short stories are like that.
"The Off Shore Pirate" is hilarious. The "Ice Palace" is strange and beautiful. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is about a baby born very old who gets younger every year.
"The Diamond As Big As The Ritz" is classic Fitzgerald, about the rich.
The story that is missing is "The Rich Boy." This is the story that started the famous spat between Hemingway and Fitzgerald.
In this short story, Fitzgerald writes: "The rich are very different from you and me." Hemingway responds in his short story, "The Snows Of Kilimanjaro:" "Yes, they have more money."
But you will not find "The Rich Boy" in this book. Too bad.
Included with the short stories are two novels:: This Side Of Paradise and The Beautiful And Damned. They are very adolescent novels. High school students might enjoy them.
Maybe not.
The short stories do more to describe the Jazz Age than his novels.
If you are serious about this author, his greatest novel is The Great Gatsby. His next best novel is Tender Is The Night. "The Rich Boy" is his best short story.
Good Collection of Pre-Gatsby Work.......2000-11-13
This is a very attractive packaged, comprehensive collection of Fitzgerald's early work, containing his first two novels (This Side of Paradise and The Beautiful & Damned) and his first two short story collections. Included are some classic short stories such as May Day and The Diamond As Big As The Ritz. Some of the other stories are less than classic, but all are enjoyable. As is the case with all Library of America volumes, the book is very easy to handle and read. There is a useful set of notes and chronology of Fitzergald's life in the back. All in all, this is well worth the price.

Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful Picture Book.......2006-03-29
As a lover of jazz, and father of two young boys who love trains, I couldn't have been happier with Bebop Express. The language is funky and bold, offering even the youngest of jazz officianados a taste of the instruments and their sounds. This, coupled with absolutely beautiful illustrations helps to make the book a fun read. We've read it over and over again. My kids love to recite it, and we're always finding something in the collage-inspired artwork that we'd never seen before. A must have on your child's shelf!
Cute, but not informative.......2006-02-23
I purchased this book thinking it would serve as a book we could read to discuss Bebop in the jazz unit I was teaching. The book is cute and all, but it doesn't really inform the reader of the bebop style. It mentions musicians that get on the train at different stops, and these musicians make the band. That's about it.
major success.......2005-08-04
My grandaughter loves books, all books, I have always depended on reviews to help me select so I wanted to share her love of this book. She cannot get enough of it. We read it over and over, now she has it memorized and says it as we read, she is thrilled with it. We are using it to teach her in addition to her simple enjoyment of the rythm and story about muscial instruments, about cities and where they are and where they are located. I cannot recommend this book enough. I found myself reading it when she was not around. Great book, every child should have it.

Book Description
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of his birth, these essays present a middle-aged Fitzgerald looking back on the era he came to epitomize. This book of five confessional essays from the 1930s follows Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda from the height of their celebrity as the darlings of the 1920s to years of rapid decline leading to the self-proclaimed "Crack Up" in 1936. The poetics of Fitzgerald\'s style are not lost in nonfiction, and these pieces display some of his finest writing. This publication from Boomer Books is specially designed and typeset for comfortable reading.

The taller of the two was named Carrol Key, a name hinting that in his veins, however thinly diluted by generations of degeneration, ran blood of some potentiality. But one could stare endlessly at the long, chinless face, the dull, watery eyes, and high cheek-bones, without finding suggestion of either ancestral worth or native resourcefulness.

Satirizing the selfishness of the wealthy.......2003-07-20
Tales Of The Jazz Age is an anthology of classic short stories by the renowned 20th Century American author F. Scott Fitzgerald, who is best known for his enduring classic "The Great Gatsby". Satirizing the selfishness of the wealthy, depicting revelry that escalates into a destructive mob, while offering a sharp look at the flaws of society, and enhanced with introductions to each story by the author, Tales Of The Jazz Age is highly recommended, and this Pine Street Books edition would make a perfect choice for school and community libraries needing to replace worn copies of previous editions.
"Must" reading for F. Scott Fitzgerald enthusiasts.......2002-11-07
Tales of the Jazz Age is an anthology of nineteen short stories by renowned author F. Scott Fitzgerald, including "The Diamond as Big as the Ritz", "Dice, Brassknuckles and Guitar", and "Love in the Night". Enhanced with an extensive record of variants, explanatory notes, as well as an extensive introduction concerning the selection and editorial principles of the anthology, Tales of the Jazz Age is a superb edition of classic literature that would grace any academic or library collection -- and is "must" reading for F. Scott Fitzgerald enthusiasts and fans.

Jazz Cats and New Orleans Flavor.......2001-10-18
This is a charming story of the "Jazz Cats" playing their music through out a New Orleans night. It is told in rhyme and each member of the band shows his musical talent. There is the hot piano kitty, Louise, and the leader of the band Broussard playing his clarinet, and old Grandpa Kitty blowing his horn. These and the rest of the jazz band play through the evening and the story follows them into the dawn as they walk home stopping at their favorite cafe along the way for a bite to eat and play a bit more jazz out on the lawn. The story ends in the park with the cats drapped asleep around the park bench waiting for the next nights gig.
The illustrations are delightful as the cats prance and strut to the music in their hip clothes set against lush backgrounds. The rhyme and art is felt through out the book and any child would enjoy this flavor of the south. They will hear the music blow out of the pages.
A rhythmic story told in verse about some real cool cats.......2001-10-18
Jazz Cats is a rhythmic story told in verse about some real cool cats that knowhow to entertain. Their New Orleans jazz combo plays together in the streets as these cats know how to have fun! David Davis' lively and entertaining picturebook story is brought vividly to live with the detailed artwork of Chuck Galey against such New Orleans backgrounds as Preservation hall, Cafe du Monde, and Jackson Square. Jazz Cats is an enthusiastically recommended addition to family, school, and community library picturebook collections for young readers.
Fun, Flowing -- Funky Jazz Cats!.......2001-10-11
I loved Jazz Cats. The rythmn could be felt on each page with the flow of the text and the wonderful illustrations. It helped me explain to my children the unique culture of New Orleans. Then we listened to some Kenny G and went to eat at Razoo's Cajun Restaurant!
Great Book
Vickie L. Perez
Cool Cats, Hot Jazz for Hip Kids.......2001-10-11
Jazz Cats serves up a fanciful glimpse of the Big Easy from a feline viewpoint. The rhymed story swings with the same easy rhythm of the jazz that Davis' musical cats play. Young readers and listeners will be drawn into the cats' world, while adult readers will enjoy the many true-to-life references to the sensory feast that is New Orleans. Chuck Galey's lush, full-page illustrations round out each cat-musician's personality, and anchor the book squarely in celebratory Crescent City ambience.
Excellent opportunity to integrate language, music and rhyme.......2001-10-11
Writer David Davis has converted rhyming prose into jazz music! His wonderful rhythmic text is full of ingenuity, invention, and inspiration. I love all these "hip" historical places in New Orleans, and what a wonderful introduction of jazz through these swingin', swayin', groovin', wailin', far-out JAZZ CATS! Fantastic illustrations too. A perfect book for homes, schools, and libraries, for adults and all cool kids!

Book Description
Ruby's voice is SO loud, it's driving everyone crazy! Then Ruby's jazz-playing neighbors come up with a plan to help her control her volume. Ruby finally learns to sing to her heart's content...without everyone needing earplugs! (Well, most of the time.) The perfect book-fun, celebratory, and maybe even a little helpful-for any family with its own irrepressible Ruby.
Customer Reviews:
Too negative.......2007-10-05
Bleah. I thought the introductory passages, in which Ruby is dumped on for being too loud and obnoxious, were really kind of harsh and unpleasant. If you were reading this book to a kid who is rowdy and loud, in hopes of teasing them into self-awareness, chances are you'd only wind up making them feel really bad about themselves. In addition to the mocking emotional tone, I also didn't like the structure and feel of the book -- just didn't like it. (Axton)
Can You Hear Me Now?.......2006-04-16
Ruby is an apealing girl with a very loud voice. It's so loud, in fact, that her neighbors call her names like "Loud-mouth" and "Boom-box." When she talks, people cover their ears, animals run away, and a palm tree bends under the force of her decibels. It all sounds like trouble for Ruby. However, when a jazz saxophonist and a vocalist hear her, they have just one name for her: "Awesome!"
It's a promising beginning, even though it may seem obvious that Ruby's voice will eventually swing with the musicians. Niki Daly's computer-enhanced pencil and ballpoint pen illustrations are whimsically stylish: People wear 1950's sci-fi style clothes that remind one of rayon bowling shirts and Ruby's parents collect that era's futurist objects d'art. (These latter include an elephant shaped planter, huge scrawled paintings, and Calder-like mobiles.) Other illustrations color ordinary objects with unusual computer-generated hues, shown against a minimalist ackground. Visually, it's a treat.
Unfortunately, Daly the author never adequately explains why Ruby is so loud. Her parents successfully ask her to quiet down, although her father wonders how long Ruby can stay at that level. Sure enough, she disturbs everyone in class the next day, and the teacher tells her to pretend that her clothes buttons are volume knobs. This works until she goes outside, turns up the volume, and alienates all her friends. We know that Ruby can be quieter, and we know she's unhappy that people shun her-so why is Ruby so loud? Perhaps it's just simpler and safer to ignore the issue, but it's also gives the book a somewhat contrived feeling
Fortunately, prize-winning illustrator Daly rescues her story with a happy ending and more superb pictures. As expected, the saxophonist and the singer come to Ruby's rescue. Zelda--all 1930-s chic with a 1950's beatnik sensibility--teaches Ruby to modulate her tone and her volume, and to sing with feeling. In a joyous two=page spread, Daly shows the whole neighborhood grooving to Ruby's blues. Notes waft through the air, happy people and animals dance on the street, and even distant buildings get animated, peering through an alley to get a better look at this good, loud party. The now acceptable Ruby blows them away at a school concert and she regains the goodwill of friends and neighbors, Still, we're told that Ruby still talks very loud sometimes, "just to check that her volume control is still working." Did she really believe the teacher's volume button ploy? Because of these narrative problems, "Ruby" is probably more suitable for younger rather than older elementary school-age kids, but Daly's illustrations and sense of style are impeccable.
A FUN LESSON IN GIVE AND TAKE.......2005-06-20
Ruby loves to sing (which is good). Ruby can't control the loudness of her voice (which is bad for friends, neighbors, teachers, and passers by).
Her parents have tried to gently tone her down; her teacher has also attempted to lower the decibels emanating from this small mouth.
Regrettably, her classmates aren't as subtle - they call her "Loud Mouth," and just tell her to stay away. Of course, this is upsetting to Rudy; she grows sadder and sadder.
Fortunately, there's a solution for Ruby's problem, which is found when two jazz musicians come calling.
Author Daly uses a bit of humor and bold illustrations to show young readers that adjustments can be made that will make you and others happy.

Customer Reviews:
Not quite what I expected........2004-12-17
I placed an order for a book which was just labeled as Mush. I was expecting Mush, a Dog from Space and got this book instead. Mush's Jazz Adventure, while entertaining, is not quite as funny as Mush, a Dog from Space. Also, the publisher printed the illustrations nearly all the way to the edges of the paper and the text almost as far out. While I am all for conserving resources, the tight binding makes it a bit difficult to see everything that is on the page.
There is nothing wrong with the writing here, and Jill Pinkwater's illustrations are inviting as well. The book just wasn't what I expected it to be when I placed my order.
