3 out of 5 stars Does read like an informercial, but it's not all bad!.......2007-06-26

I use Revival Soy products (the shakes & protein bars, low carb versions) on a regular basis and enjoy them for the most part. It one of the few products I've ever used that have actually done for me what they say it does. It's helped greatly alleviate my PMS symptoms, clear up my skin, and more. My husband doesn't need further convincing to keep Revival Soy in my life...he doesn't miss the PMS witch at all! Even with the controversies that surround soy products, I stick with Revival Soy...I don't want to go back to what I was (or how I felt) before it.

With that said, when I heard that Dr. Tabor and Revival Soy were coming out with a diet book, I got excited and actually looked forward to reading it. (I hate reading diet books.)

Well, by chance I was able to get a free copy. I'm glad I got it for free, as I would not have been completely happy if I had to pay more than a few bucks for this book.

The biggest reason? This book does come off as a informercial. I've caught myself rolling my eyes on more than one occasion...and I'm only 1/2 way through the book!

Despite that, I have found a lot of great tidbits and inspiration to help keep me motivated in my current weight loss journey. While I'm not doing the Revival Diet plan per se, (I prefer to stick with my low carb diet) I still enjoyed some of what the book had to say and gave me some new ideas and inspiration to work with.

To me the real value of this book is in the psychology of going through the weight loss process. Losing weight is not easy...but if we can keep a positive attitude about it - about ourselves - we will enjoy the journey of change better than just a quick fix plan.

If you can pick up this book for "cheap" then I think you will find some gems in there worth reading. If you're not a fan of informercials, then stay away!

1 out of 5 stars Worst book ever..........2007-04-19

There is nothing in this book that hasn't been said before and it points out in numerous places that you have to follow the entire plan exactly. Which means living off of the author's products. It was like reading over 150 pages of an infomercial.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the price..........2007-04-18

This diet book provides Dr. Aaron Tabor yet another forum from which to tout his soy products. Interspersed with recommendations about a variety of other supplements (all of which I had heard about previously), this book contains such breakthrough diet advice as: eat small to be small. The tidbits provided by Dr. Tabor's mother, while mildly amusing, offered little in the way of useful material. It may interest readers to know that mama knew it was time to do something when she looked like an overstuffed sausage casing in her slimming undergarment, but these interspersed comments get annoying quickly and seem more like filler than useful advice. This program isn't unique - it's simply repackaged material from a dozen different books already on the market.

5 out of 5 stars Great New Book!.......2007-04-05

Unfortunately, current popular diets offered to consumers focus only on weight loss, not total-body beauty inside and out. Dr. Aaron Tabor, M.D., a graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, has created his next-generation "The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet." The program is the first clinically proven inside-out makeover diet plan for dramatic weight loss and improved skin, hair, and nail appearance, year round.

"Using topically applied creams and lotions is only 50 percent of battle against the visible signs of aging. The other 50 percent starts inside for a slim figure and gorgeous skin, hair, and nails," said Dr. Tabor.

Developed during the past seven years at some of the nation's top hospitals, "The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet" was originally created to rescue Dr. Tabor's mother, Suzanne Tabor, from what he calls a "midlife meltdown." His mother experienced a rapidly expanding waistline, deepening wrinkle appearance, dull hair, brittle nails, menopausal hot flashes and night sweats. The program was carefully designed as a simple, yet effective, diet and physical activity plan to help dieters achieve:

* An average weight loss of 26 to 29 pounds in just sixteen weeks (among the best results ever published in medical history);
* A rapid reduction in belly fat (up to 25 percent or more in sixteen weeks) with a reduced waist circumference;
* Improved appearance of wrinkles and skin with less roughness and better coloration;
* Increase in hair silkiness with reduced dullness and better manageability;
* Sexier nails with less splitting, ridging and flaking;
* A reduction in hunger and cravings for sweet, salty, and crunchy foods;
* Promotion of better energy levels with protein-packed, low-glycemic "smart-carb" choices; and
* Promotion of normal hormonal health (including reduction of hot flashes), bone health, and cholesterol levels.

Revival dieters did not experience the typical weight loss "plateau" seen in many other diets, thus indicating that Revival dieters can continue to lose significant weight well beyond the initial sixteen weeks.

"The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet" book, co-authored by Dr. Tabor and his mother Suzanne, encompasses unique and tangible research-based guidelines to help dieters achieve maximum, long-term results. The eight-chapter book not only highlights the physical steps needed to successfully diet, but it also touches upon the psychological aspects. Chapter three, entitled "The Ten Psychological Commandments of Permanent Weight Loss," addresses the deeper meanings of dieting and helps consumers become mentally determined for permanent weight loss. When the principles learned from the aforementioned chapter are paired with the more actively involved guidelines in such chapters as "The Fifteen Physical Laws of Accelerated Weight Loss," and "Put A Tiger In Your Tank...Energize Me!" dieters are guaranteed to experience a lasting "inside-out nutritional makeover."

"The proven power and simplicity of `The Revival Slim and Beautiful Diet' can help any dieter improve the way they look and feel," said Dr. Tabor. Tabor continued, "Looking great isn't vanity. It's victory. This diet is designed to help people lose weight, look beautiful and live healthier, empowered lives."

Consumers can learn more about the latest inside-out makeover technology, including how to promote better facial bones, and view a special video from Dr. Tabor.

2 out of 5 stars Good But Content Diluted, Concept-Elucidation Blurred?.......2007-08-15

Yes it is indeed a sad enterprise when an author--runs out of steam. Begins to repeat; begins to dilute. A near-universal in visual art, also in literature. Mark Twain's early travel books ran dynamic, rich--but then at least one later work slowed to show results of fatigue and the end of inspiration. We can call it an issue of Specific Gravity. What is the amount of material compared to the word-count? One speaks of "op-ed books" today, full-length treatments whose gist and essence could have been presented in, say, 1000 words.

Edward Tufte's invaluable first three books show this proportionate packing with material. Just possibly, this fourth and latest book--shows dilution, watering-down, inappropriate repetition. At least one other reviewer has made this point; I suspect so.

But let's accentuate the positives of Tufte's vision--even if imperfectly presented here. New here (among good stuff such as "sparklines") is the indispensable attempt at explicating universal principles of design. Above the Concrete Particulars, the flux of graphs, charts, pictures, etc., what Conceptual Principles can guide us? And the half-dozen issues he identifies, are helpful.

However, the presentation of them is not. Tufte employs Menard's famous graphic of Napoleon's 1811 Russian campaign to illustrate the principles. However, in terms of sheer Information Elucidation, two errors seem to occur.

First, number of examples. To convey difficult concept, more than one example, illustration, instance is needed. We lack a "rounded ensemble" (in my system's terminology) of several and varied instances to better cinch the point. Example: someone trying to convey the idea of a map as more than just an image of the earth's surface, of presenting knowledge, referenced chromosome maps in genetics, weather maps in meteorology, animal range maps in zoology, magnetic field maps in geology, and wiring diagrams in engineering. [Geographer Peter Gould is even better in elucidating how maps are not terrestrial but conceptual, representing relationships between things. He references "maps" of emotional states of married couples, South Pacific geobotanically, New Zealand "in changing aircost space," intellectual winds blowing through psychology journals, my gosh, world journalism, Shakespeare, influenza...] Bravo, a rounded ensemble cinches the concept with polypod footings. Too bad Tufte fell short here as the multiple instances ploy is actually similar to Tufte's own excellent tactic of "Small Multiples."

Second, comparison/contrast, or rather,Tufte's non-use of this keystone principle of thinking-writing-communicating. Only the excellent Menard graphic is shown; he should have either shown a bad attempt by another of the same subject, or created a "ruined" version also of Menard's, given a flawed example. This dualism for each of his universal principles. One thinks of Tufte's own dictum, statistics always asks, "compared to what?" Or, "He who knows not a foreign country knows nothing of his own." Or, to teach freshmen students good qualities of poetry, give a first draft or inferior poem on the same subject as well as Yeats' excellent final-draft "The Old Pensioner." Or give even a triad: as in, a too-lightly- inked graphic, a just-right density, and then an over-inked graphic.

So much for better elucidation of Key Principles. This is more important than the issue of irrelevant items, such as the issues of introductions and of sculptures. A little charity here; it's hard to exclude one's own enthusiasms. But Convergence to Point is also a principle of good communication.

"At least a quintet [of books] is projected," states Tufte. But let him await the wellspring re-filling itself with Heavy Water, not diluted dew. And please use comparison-contrast and multiple examples to cinch point.

5 out of 5 stars Just incredible........2007-07-18

As always Professor Tufte's work in this area just continues to astound me. I have read- and re-read - the other works and this is arguably the most succinct and tight one yet. It operates equally well from 30,000 feet as it does through a macro lens....very well laid out, beautifully executed and remarkable approachable for a wide range of professionals outside the design and graphics industry.

3 out of 5 stars Tufte B-sides?.......2007-07-01

This fourth book in Tufte's series on visual information resembles a disappointing B-sides/greatest hits collection instead of an essential new work. It includes a full reprint of Tufte's recent PowerPoint pamphlet and frequent discussion of topics from earlier books (for example Minard's chart of Napoleon's march into Russia). The final chapter on Tufte's sculptures seems especially misplaced. New material includes exploration of Sparklines, word-sized graphs interspersed among normal text. In the Graphics Press tradition of superior aesthetics, this book contains richly printed images and text on thick paper.
I'd strongly recommend the previous three books in the series, esp. the first one 'The Visual Display of Quantitative Information'. Those who already own those three works can probably skip this new volume.

1 out of 5 stars What was I thinking?.......2007-06-08

If I had gone into a brick and mortar store and thumbed through the pages of this book I would never have purchased it. I'm sorry I just don't get all this artsy type fluff that everyone seems to be so "Tufte-Gong-Ho" about. I was expecting a book from a professional business perspective on insights on how to represent various types of data in the correct visual format. One look at the table of contents gives you the impression that's exactly what this book is. However, when you look at the actual contents, you have pictures and artwork that would never make it in a professional boardroom. The examples are just plain terrible and you would think someone as good as Tufte would be able to represent and communicate concepts in a better format instead of getting nostalgic with historical artwork. Do I really care about David Smith's Cubi XXVI (1965) sculptural volumes! Oh and the slave trade ship pictures on pages 22-23 are a nice touch. Give me a break; I'm still scratching my head trying to figure out what the point of those pictures were in explaining a concept. I just hope I can resell this book and try to recover half the price I paid for it. If you are in corporate America trying to make a living adding value to your company's bottom line, skip this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Evidence.......2007-05-07

This book should be reviewed by anyone who writes reports or gives presentations. I especially like the author's views on corruption of data and facts.

5 out of 5 stars Make Your Web Site Stand Out From The Rest.......2007-09-07

'The Principles of Beautiful Web Design' by Jason Beaird is a short (~170 pages) book about an important topic: designing better content for the web. Back in the days when web sites were first developed, you only cared about seeing a few hyperlinks and maybe a few pictures. Design didn't matter because the web was new, it was exciting, and just to be able to connect was sometimes a joy in itself. With Web 2.0 those times have changed. Users not only expect to be able to always get to the content they are interested in, they want the look to be logical and well presented. They want sites and content to make sense, and they want it to be easy on the eyes and on the brain. With this book you will learn the skills necessary for anyone that creates content for the web on how to produce an end result that not only provides the information you want to to the user, but in a way that makes sense.

5 chapters might not seem like a lot, but it's perfect for this book. Unlike a reference manual, this is more of a case study book and the size it just like that last bowl of porridge for Goldilocks: Just Right

With a web design book I would expect the layout to be designed just as well with plenty of color and a nice stock paper. As sitepoint always delivers, I got just what I expected. Not only a book that is fun and interesting to learn and read from, but the above and beyond quality that ia always sitepoint's forte.

If you create web sites or edit existing ones, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book and become a better and designer for the Web 2.0 world.

    ***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any collection catering to web designers........2007-09-06

Plenty of books focus on how to build web sites, streamline them, and enhance them - but what about fine-tuning to create great designs? The Principles of Beautiful Web Design covers this, from the basics of a solid design and its implementation to using color schemes, textures, typography, and images more effectively. Chapters cover trends, common pitfalls, and more in a top pick which is a 'must' for any collection catering to web designers.

5 out of 5 stars Superb book for web designers.......2007-08-24

Just read this book and found it a great source of enjoyment all the way through!, the writing style is great and very easy to follow, this book will leave you with new ideas to put into practice, as well as new ways to look at color, typography, and layout, all with great pictures to accompany the examples on the page. even though ive read it, its defiantly going to be by my side the next time I start to design a site.... well done!.

5 out of 5 stars Help in making your sites look great!.......2007-08-23

There are many good books on the technology of creating effective websites but most give relatively little help in how to create the visual basis of your site. This book fills this need beautifully. I purchased this book midway through a college class in web graphics. It confirmed and expanded on what I was learning there.

If you really want to create sites that stand out visually this is a book you should have.

5 out of 5 stars Basics of design I never considered..........2007-08-01

This book dives into the very basics of design. Not web design... but the aspects of making a web design look good. This book will be a good starting point for making your designs look better... not just to you but to your visitors.

The only bad thing I'll say about this book is that it is a bit short. I would have liked to read more from this good book.

    Book Description

“One of the most admired men in the world of seduction” (The New York Times) teaches average guys how to approach, attract and begin intimate relationships with beautiful women
For every man who always wondered why some guys have all the luck, Mystery, considered by many to be the world’s greatest pickup artist, finally reveals his secrets for finding and forming relationships with some of the world’s most beautiful women. Mystery gained mainstream attention for his role in Neil Strauss’s New York Times bestselling exposé, The Game. Now he has written the definitive handbook on the art of the pickup.
He developed his unique method over years of observing social dynamics and interacting with women in clubs to learn how to overcome the guard shield that many women use to deflect come-ons from "average frustrated chumps."

    His tips include:
*Give more attention to her less attractive friend at first, so your target will get jealous and try to win your attention.
*Always approach a target within 3 seconds of noticing her. If a woman senses your hesitation, her perception of your value will be lower.
*Don't be picky. Approach as many groups of people in a bar as you can and entertain them with fun conversation. As you move about the room, positive perception of you will grow. Now it's easy to meet anyone you want.
*Smile. Guys who don't get laid, don't smile.

Good book. But they could have packaged it better for delivery. When I recieved it the corners where damaged. I plan on keeping this book so it would have been nice to have it delivered undamaged.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious and informative.......2007-10-06

I got this book from a friend after a recent divorce. To her it was a gag gift. It took me a while to finally get around to reading it. I was glad I did. It's not only highly entertaining, but I think provides a lot of tips for not only getting beautiful women into bed (God knows I need all the help I can get with even the not-so-beautiful women), but in general for being successful with people--sort of a modern day Dale Carnegie. If nothing else, you'll enjoy the read!

4 out of 5 stars Really good book!.......2007-09-30

This book was great but the problem is that it is more of an explanation on the mystery method than a "how to" book. It gives few examples of gambits (conversations starters to disarm & attract targets). The reader is basically encouraged to go out & figure it out through constant trial & error. What I loved most is the explanations of differences between men & women & why women do some of the crazy things they do (this alone is worth the price of the book). I t tells you what attracts women & how to choose the right thing to say & what body language you express. Again it does not actually tell you what to say & only very few gambits (you must be able to switch from on story to another effortlessly without pause to keep target intrigued & wanting more). The reader is left to come up with their own material or purchase it from his website.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2007-09-30

I just finished watching "The Pick-up Artist" on WeTV with Mystery as its host and it really proved to be entertaining! I met my girlfriend being "cocky and funny" in that I showed humor, confidence, and flirtation which are the basics of what Mystery teaches. Overall, a great read! You'd be surprised how many men are clueless on how to approach women. Also, there are so many women who are intimidated by men approaching them if they have a boyfriend or husband. They freak out and don't take it as a compliment!

5 out of 5 stars what a crock of crap!.......2007-09-29

Well, having read both books... I still say what a crock of crap. The book is more aptly named how to manipulate women and get laid.

Perfect for every guy who is having trouble getting laid and is in no real need of a relationship or has any desire on how to actually have a relationship... Just pretend your way from bed to bed...

I'm not saying that is a bad thing. For some men, and women or that matter, this works and he/she is happy with it. But this book should not be read with the idea that this is the way to find, build and have a lasting love based on anything trusting, vulnerable, or real.

Women should read this book, so they can spot these guys when they come around and make a decision knowing what is really going on.

So, why did I rate the book a 5? The book says exactly what it says it does... teaches exactly what it says it teaches. It is the responsibility of each reader to decide if that is the desired knowledge and outcome he is seeking.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!.......2007-08-25

This book is a must have for every man who wants to have success with beautiful women. Another new bestseller which I highly recommend - The Exclusive Layguide: When Dating and Having Sex with Incredibly Hot Women is No Longer Mirage Even If You Don't Look Like a Model or Don't Make a Fortune

    Amazing books!

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't Have Too Much To Offer (Rating: 5 out of 10- -2.5 stars).......2007-08-14

So I read this book on how to help pick up women, because the title looks so promising. I read it and basically it doesn't have too much to offer. It doesn't give straight foward help, it kinda beats around the bush. I have learned some new things in this book, such as how to start conversations with women and ask openended questions with them (expect the phrase "Whats your story" about 1000 times). But basically, the information in this book is vague. It does not give instant results like we guys all planned to, but it gives you a starting point and hangs you out to dry on your road to being a PUA instead of a chump.

Being a 20 year old college student and living in a city full of females who are stuck up, I figured this book would help out. Unfortunately, it did not do me too much justice. If you guys found success in this book with the opposite sex, give yourself a pat on the back. Funny that female reviewers (like the one below me), might get a joke out of this book because they go around making others feel like crap. I for one really don't recommend this book because of it's vague subject matter. If you want to read a good book, I recommend How to Succeed with Women, because that book gives more info into detail. Peace.

1 out of 5 stars THE JIG IS UP!!!.......2007-08-11

It has to be said, guys; WOMEN CAN READ! And we're reading these male dating guides faster than you are and we know all the tricks. Play them and you'll be labeled a loser before you get to flash that charming smile.

I have a college-age daughter and she and her friends have a collection of these books (The Game, Mystery Method, PBDG, etc.) that they pass back and forth and laugh about, belittling guys they've caught in the act of trying to employ what they've read. It's kinda sad.

And worse, every women's talk show has turned these books inside out. Any woman with a television will spot the act and you may lose out on a promising encounter.

Go back to being yourself. You're a lot more attractive than you think!

2 out of 5 stars Basic but available elsewhere.......2007-07-27

While 'The Layguide' does cover the aspects of a succesful pickup, it is a fairly rudimentary guide. All the information in this book is also available in any of the sedution community sites. Fast Seduction has practically this entire book.
If you're truly interested, read 'the game' and then check out the seduction forums. It will benefit your wallet more...

    Book Description

Seventeen years ago, Sepha Stephanos fled the Ethiopian Revolution after witnessing soldiers beat his father to the point of certain death, selling off his parents' jewelry to pay for passage to the United States. Now he finds himself running a grocery store in a poor African-American neighborhood in Washington, D.C. His only companions are two fellow African immigrants who share his feelings of frustration with and bitter nostalgia for their home continent. He realizes that his life has turned out completely different and far more isolated from the one he had imagined for himself years ago.

Soon Sepha's neighborhood begins to change. Hope comes in the form of new neighbors-Judith and Naomi, a white woman and her biracial daughter-who become his friends and remind him of what having a family is like for the first time in years. But when the neighborhood's newfound calm is disturbed by a series of racial incidents, Sepha may lose everything all over again.

Told in a haunting and powerful first-person narration that casts the streets of Washington, D.C., and Addis Ababa through Sepha's eyes, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears is a deeply affecting and unforgettable debut novel about what it means to lose a family and a country-and what it takes to create a new home.

    5 out of 5 stars new yorker.......2007-08-30

I read this book hoping to be moved and enlightened and to feel that I had been honored to have a new and wondeful experience. This was a good book, but, sadly I will have forgotten it shortly. I await the next by this wonderful writer who might someday be a saramago or a ha jin or a murakami....but not yet. Still worth 5 stars for the promise of the future.

    5 out of 5 stars important book.......2007-07-20

This is a very touching novel, very well-written. I think it is an important book because so few Americans have any knowledge of the experience of African immigrants. Obviously this is only one small story, but it is an intelligent and poignant story that vividly captures meaningful aspects of the immigrant experience.

    5 out of 5 stars Melancholy and gently humorous . . ........2007-06-20

The central character and narrator of this melancholy novel, Sepha, is a 30-something Ethiopian immigrant, living in Washington, DC, in a run-down neighborhood that is suddenly showing signs of gentrification. After 17 years in the States, he has long since reached the point of accepting his fate - an endless exile from the country of his birth and the mother and younger brother who survived the revolution that he himself escaped at the age of 19. A shopkeeper now, operating a little market, he lacks the drive that makes model immigrants of others and thus barely makes ends meet - less than barely.

Except for two friends, Ken and Joe, also African immigrants, he leads a lonely and listless life. By contrast, Ken an engineer from Kenya, strives steadily to adapt himself to the American pursuit of material success; Joe, a waiter in a high-class restaurant, is a closet epic poet, obsessed with the political debacle of his own country, Congo. The friendship of these three single men is poignant and often quietly amusing, and they pass the time with ironic reminders of how their lives in America have been like an escape from Dante's hell (the title is a reference to the closing lines of "The Inferno").

Enter a well-off white woman, an academic with a school-age daughter. When she buys and renovates a house in the neighborhood, she sparks a feint romantic interest in Sepha, as well as the resentment of the welfare-check neighbors being evicted as rents suddenly begin to soar. The resulting events make for a wistful account of people traumatized by brutal political upheavals, and washing up in the land of freedom and opportunity, where lives settle into a kind of permanent holding pattern. Beautifully written, with a quiet charm that finds rueful laughter in sadness and loss. Readers may also appreciate Hisham Matar's "In the Country of Men."

4 out of 5 stars Nice debut from Dinaw Mengestu.......2007-06-15

Dinaw Mengestu's debut novel paints a detailed, knowing picture of life amongst D.C.'s Ethiopian community. It's also a nice study of a 'neighborhood in transition' and its effects on new residents and old. I especially liked Megnestu's depiction of the interactions between the novel's protagonist Sepha Stephanos and his two African mates, Kenneth and Joseph. Megnestu shows a keen ear for dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars An Ethiopian immigrant's new life.......2007-05-30

Sepha Stephanos is stuck in time. He is in Ethiopia, huddled in the corner with his brother, watching his father being beaten by revolutionaries during the Red Terror. He flees to America, but his life in the "land of opportunity" is merely a dream --- not a nightmare or a hopeful reverie, but a mundane existence free of any ambition or disillusion, full only of fond memories of his father. "How was I supposed to live in America when I had never really left Ethiopia? I wasn't, I decided. I wasn't supposed to live here at all." Instead, he leads a solitary existence behind a convenience store counter and inside a dilapidated house in a run-down neighborhood of Washington, D.C.

Sepha has two friends, both representing different facets of immigration. Kenneth dons his suit and tie daily, having worked himself up from hotel employee to engineer. He "takes one for the team" by working Christmas Day, allowing his American co-workers to celebrate with their families. Joseph, on the other hand, is a waiter who drinks the alcohol left on tables straight from the glasses of unknown patrons. Joseph is a romantic, perfecting words of poetry and relating everything in life back to Africa. Like Sepha, Joseph is unable to come to terms with his American existence.

Sepha's desire for invisibility is challenged when a white woman moves in next door with her biracial daughter. Suddenly his store seems dirty and his home run down. He notices his balding head and nonexistent college education. To further complicate matters, his neighborhood is embarking on its own revolution --- a changing climate that threatens the ousting of all present tenants for the sake of revitalization. Will he awaken from his dream in time to maintain the life he has created for himself, or is it ultimately impossible to trade one country for another?

Debut novelist Dinaw Mengestu and his family left Ethiopia shortly after the Red Terror when he was just a boy. Recently he gave a reading in Seattle, Washington, to a room filled with Americans and Ethiopians alike. The Americans were no doubt drawn to the beauty of the story, the fluidity of the prose and the humanity of the protagonist. The Ethiopians were understandably thankful for this telling of their recent history and for a voice of a highly voiceless topic, in the land that they too are trying to embrace.

Mengestu's voice brought the character to even greater life as he read of Sepha's final experience with his father and the revolutionaries. The author stood behind the podium in a white shirt and sport coat, with blue jeans scarcely hiding his "Ethiopianesque" stick-like legs and his hair in dread locks that were haphazardly crowning his head. His voice was soft, slow enough to carry the weight of the story, and we in the room sat mesmerized. We all seemed to be asking ourselves the same question: Where does one go from here? When a writer has told the intimate story of his family and country, even when fictionalized, how can it be matched by any subsequent tale?

There is no doubt though that this author can pull it off, and I look forward to reading his next (as of yet undisclosed) body of work. Mengestu has both the humility and the grandeur of a successful writer, and we at the reading all seemed to feel as though we were in the presence of a highly talented friend.

    1 out of 5 stars A big disappointment.......2007-09-20

I was very disappointed by this book and don't agree with the glowing reviews.

I am a photographer who was interested in the difference between film shooting and digital shooting in a wedding situation.

I found this book to be VERY basic and is more appropriate for someone who is brand new to the wedding photography.

Even with that I found the information stated the obvious. For example, I think working with flash to be one of the more challenging areas of being new to digital. There were some basic instructions and some pictures that would be in my waste basket not shown as some "cool" effect.

All in all this is a general text for someone who may never have been to a wedding and/or has very little exposure to wedding photography. I would not recommend this book to anyone above the amateur level.

1 out of 5 stars Worst photography book I've tried.......2007-09-06

I find it hard to find anything to agree with the positive reviewers. After reviewing this book, I conclude that some photography books are just about selling books, not valuable instruction. This one does not provide anything but the most very basic input. If you are not completely new to photography, then this book is probably too basic for you.
I purchased this book because I have a couple of weddings booked as an assistant & 2nd shooter, and like you wanted something to "bone up" on that I may otherwise miss. I flipped thru each section, but decided to return the book instead of spending valuable time reading further. This book is so basic, covering the most basic camera functions and simple personal interactions, that it is not worth the time to read thoroughly. My teenage daughter has taken some high school basic photography classes, and politely commented that "this book is silly".

A wedding shoot is critical to the couple, and there are no 2nd chances for a re-shoot. If you really feel the need to cover the basics, I suggest one covering general photography elements, practicing, and returning to weddings after those become second nature. Although a different genre, I can recommend Michael Freeman's "Light & Lighting in Digital Photography".

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2007-09-04

I am new at wedding photography so I purchased this book. It is absolutely the best one I have read so far. It covers everything! Glen Johnson walks you through every aspect of the photography business. It is much more than a "wedding" photography book. It covers everything- from equipment to lighting to everything. I love it!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Glen Johnson knows what he's talking about..........2007-08-28

Very inspiring book and one thing I've noticed about Glen is he is all about helping others. Many photographers want to keep the secrets to themselves, but Glen let's all the good stuff out in this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in Wedding Photography as he gives you such a wide range of information covering nearly every aspect of the wedding photography project to completion and gives several recommendations on current products on the market. I even noticed after reviewing Glen's website that he offers this book signed by him from his website. It's much more affordable here on Amazon, but it's different to get the signed version. My hat's off to Glen for an outstanding book.

I recommend this book to the non-traditional photographer. This would appeal more so to the photo journalist or the portrait journalist as this is Glen's photography style. Thanks for putting this book together Glen!

This is the best book on greens I've ever found. If you're serious about incorporating a lot of greens into your diet, then do yourself a favor and get this book. Not only does it have several great recipes for each different green, it also has an introduction to each green citing it's particular health benefits. It even lets you know not to eat particular items like beet greens too often. Amazing book.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing & Simple .......2007-03-08

I love this book because it puts everything into context- it breaks down the nutrients of each green, the origin, how to buy it, when to buy it, how to store it and finally how to cook it. Most recipes start simple and then evolve. It's a great book for beginners and experts.

5 out of 5 stars Good way to start eating luscious greens.......2005-08-12

I have been wanting to add greens to our family diet for years but needed help learning about the individual plants and how to cook them. This book is a good primer, teaching the reader about the general character of each of the most commonly available greens, what nutritional aspects they add to the diet, their flavor, texture, and how they combine with other foods to make a better meal. Importantly, the authors provide advice about the best (and worst) ways to cook each green. The recipes are simple and tasty.

There are no pictures of completed recipes, but after trying one, the reader will probably not need pictures, simply because all the recipes end by gently tossing the ingredients. Nothing complicated here. A cookbook worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2005-08-09

It has so many recipes to choose from. This book is great. I recommend it to all of my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Lives up to the hype.......2007-10-01

I love this book!!! I'm relatively new to polymer clay and have much to learn. I'd purchased three other books before this one, and while they had some great inspiration, I found them lacking in the how-to's. This book came highly recommended, and I'd say that if you can buy only one book on polymer clay, get this one. The author goes over all the basics, including tools and additional materials, with very clear pictures and instructions. Many other books seem to make it all seem very easy, but leave out some steps not always obvious to the beginner. This book really covers all the steps. While this book is all about making beads, the techniques covered can be applied to all kinds of projects. 5 big stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Making Polymer Clay Beads.......2007-09-28

This is one of the finest "how-to" books that I have ever owned and/or read. The instructions are clear and self explanatory. The scope is broad and illuminating. The illustrations are so good they could almost stand alone. I highly reccommend this book to anyone interested in learning to make their own polymer clay beads.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome Book.......2007-09-04

Finally a book dedicated to nothing but making beads from Polymer Clay. The step by step instructions are so easy to follow and the examples are incredible. This is a must have book to any serious bead maker and jewelry maker alike.

1 out of 5 stars Just copies of real beads!!.......2007-08-21

I bought this book and am sending it back today. If I wanted to make copies of real beads, I would just buy the real beads. You don't save anything with the time you invest and all the supplies you need. It would actually be cheaper to buy the real beads. The shoe beads that were advertised "as in the book", are not in the book. And neither is anything else of interst. Make your own designs and get a life.

    Book Description

We buy more flowers a year than we do Big Macs, spending $6.2 billion annually. We use them to mark our most important events, to express sentiments that might otherwise go unsaid. And we demand perfection. So it’s no surprise that there is a $40 billion global industry devoted to making flowers flawless.

Amy Stewart takes us inside the flower trade—from the hybridizers, who create new varieties in the laboratory, to the growers, who produce flowers by the millions (often in a factory-like setting), to the Dutch auctioneers, who set the bar (and the price), and ultimately to the neighborhood florists orchestrating the mind-boggling demands of Valentine’s and Mother’s Day. There’s the breeder intent on developing the first blue rose; an eccentric horticultural legend who created the world’s most popular lily; a grower of gerberas of every color imaginable; and the equivalent of a Tiffany diamond: the “ Forever Young” rose.

Stewart explores the relevance of flowers in our lives and in our history, and in the process she reveals all that has been gained—and lost—by tinkering with nature.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wierd title, great book.......2007-10-07

When I saw Amy Stewart's name on a new book I had to have it. I enjoyed her book about earthworms so much that I didn't think she could match it, but I was wrong. This is a wonderful expose of the flower trade around the world. From Holland to South America she tracked down the progress of cut flowers from their hybridizing to the final sale. It all has the ring of truth - that sense that the research was thorough, that nothing was skimped, and aspects of the flower business were presented whole cloth as well as facts being recorded and shared.
Last year I saw roses grown in Ecuador for markets continents away. I read about Dole closing down huge flower-growing greenhouses in poor towns where that was the only source of income. In our hacienda were bouquets of roses enormous beyond belief. Amy Stewart's book places this into perspective for me within the whole world of the flower industry.
In slaking her own curiosity about the natural world, this writer helps us understand our world better. This book is not just about flowers, or even the natural world - it is also about international trade, politics, business affairs and economic and social issues.
An excellent package. I can't wait for her next book.

5 out of 5 stars The dirt DIVA endorses Amy Stewart's book, baby!.......2007-08-28

As an opinionated garden columnist, who preaches organic gardening to anyone who will listen . . . I was thrilled to read a book that finally tells the true story behind the floral industry. The system is ridiculous and needs drastic change. This will only happen when flower consumers are educated enough to see what their purchases are doing to the soil and to the farmers and their families, who work amongst toxic pesticides just so we can have a nice, long-lasting, unscented, superficial flower on our table.
Plus, the book is beautifully written.
    AMEN AMY!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Introduction to Exciting World of Flowers.......2007-08-24

When you go to the supermarket and see groceries, most of us have at least a basic understanding of from where and how the food came to be there, such as the fields where crops grew, ranches where livestock were raised, slaughterhouses, processing facilities, etc. But how many times have most of us thought about flowers? Especially considering just how short a period of time there is between when a flower is picked, when it is displayed in our homes, and when it finally wilts, there are an amazing number of processes and work involved in flowers. Travelling around the world, from the "design" stage (yes, you'll read about how flowers are "engineered") to planting, to selling, to transportation, to marketing, all the way to the florist's shop or the supermarket, Stewart covers it all. You'll even learn a lot about some of the "allied" professions in the flower trade, like logistics, retailing, biotechnology, and more. And best of all, the book is written in a very easy to read style. If you have any interest in flowers and/or you just like learning about how things work, then I wholeheartedly recommend this book to you.

    5 out of 5 stars Flower-ific!.......2007-07-04

I brought this book with me on a vacation to Hawaii last week, outwardly hopeful that it would be as great as it sounded, but inwardly nervous that it was not beach-appropriate. But I am delighted (and relieved) to report that it was fantastic, and I could barely put it down. (I went for a wedding, and I would even break it out when I had a spare five minutes.)

I was really impressed with Stewart's ability to take a complicated, international industry and reduce it to enjoyable anecdotes, from a 3rd generation violet grower in California to the early morning Dutch flower auction. Even better, I feel smarter now. (If I hadn't borrowed it from the library, I probably would have broken out my highlighter.) There's just so much information packed in there -- she clearly put a tremendous amount of hours and research into this work.

Having said that, I think you have to like flowers, at least a little bit, to really enjoy Flower Confidential. If you don't, I could see how you'd want to chuck it out the window -- for me, it would be like reading a towering stack of Car & Driver with no end in sight.

4 out of 5 stars the flip side of all that loveliness.......2007-06-01

As a flower junkie and floral designer, I was vaguely aware of the flower industry's workings, but this book spelled it all out pretty clearly for me. The Big Idea I have taken away from this is that we the flower-buying public need to demand quality, cleanliness and sustainability from the flower industry in the same way we are coming to demand it from those who supply our food. "Fair trade" is a phrase most Americans associate with coffee-- we should expect similar standards with respect to the flowers we purchase as well. All that loveliness should not come at the expense of the health of those producing it or of the integrity of the environment.
