Book Description

Emily has a tendency to live with one foot out the door. For her, the best thing about a family crisis is the excuse to cut and run. When her mother dramatically announces they've found a lump, Emily gladly takes a rain check on life to be by her mother's side, leaving behind her career, her boyfriend, and those pesky, unanswerable questions about who she is and what she's doing with her life.

But back in her childhood bedroom, Emily realizes that she hasn't run fast or far enough. One evening, while her mother calls everyone in her Rolodex to brief them on her medical crisis and schedule a farewell martini, Emily opens the door, quite literally, to find her past staring her in the face. How do you forge a relationship with the father who left when you were five years old? As Emily attempts to find balance on the emotional seesaw of her life, with the help of two hopeful suitors and her Park Avenue Princess sister, she takes a no-risk job as a receptionist at her father's law firm and slowly gets to know the man she once pretended was dead.

From the brainy, breezy writer who "writes like a professional comic" (The Onion) and is "hard to stop reading once you start" (USA Today) comes a laugh-out-loud tale that confirms you can recover from your parents, the bad habit of missed opportunities, and men who romance you with meat. When opportunity knocks, it's time to stop running and start living.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-08-23

After reading Girls Poker Night several years, I was highly anticipating her next novel. However, after reading this book, I am very disappointed. The book has no flow to it, it is not humorous, and the topics are scattered, making it difficult to stay focused. In summary, I would not recommend this book to anyone looking for a read similar to her other book, Girls Poker Night!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-29

This is a great book, full of laugh-out-loud funny scenes. I enjoyed it immensely and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for the perfect summer read.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and Sharp.......2007-06-28

Ask Again Later is a witty, sharp novel, a light read that is not overly fluffy. The novel is narrated by Emily Rhode, a recovering lawyer who keeps her emotions at a distance. She's in therapy, she's taking care of her ailing mother (stage one breast cancer), she's walked out on what could be the love of her life and she's walked away from her career. But she's handling it, somehow, with a marvelous detached humor; she's a wonderful, witty, likeable narrator. I really enjoyed this novel (much moreso than Girls' Poker Night); it's a quick read that is still satisfying. Perfect summer fare. Enjoy.

Remember when you were a child and you could trust your most difficult questions to the wisdom of the Magic 8-Ball? The protagonist of Jill A. Davis's second novel frequently echoes the refrain of that childhood oracle. Whenever thirty-something Emily Rhode is queried by friends on how she is doing, her familiar refrain is that of the Magic 8-Ball: "Ask again later."

It's easy to see why this is the case. Emily is a harried corporate attorney who has managed to tiptoe through the minefield of her life, careful to avoid any major skirmishes or hard decisions. She's currently skirting along the edges of a romance with a divorced co-worker as she goes about her hectic job. But when she learns that her mother has breast cancer, her whole tentative world is turned upside down.

Emily has grown up in a not-so-unusually dysfunctional family in New York City. Her dad left the family when she and her sister were just children, and he's been like a phantom ever since --- someone she never really knew. Emily's mother, a woman with a penchant for dramatics, responds to her stage 1 cancer diagnosis by calling everyone in her address book to tell them she's going to die.

Over-dramatized or not, the news of her mother's illness shakes Emily to her core. And since her socialite sister is of little help as she struggles to fit her new baby into her overly crowded social schedule, Emily quits her high-pressure law job, flees from her potential love interest and moves back in with her mother to care for her during treatment.

A strange byproduct of her mother's illness is her renewed relationship with her distant father. In an effort to help out during this difficult time, Emily's dad offers her a nice, low-pressure job as the receptionist in his office. Slowly she begins to learn about this mercurial man she calls her father. But as soon as her mother starts to recover, she is hit with an unexpected loss that forces her to face her fears and fully participate in her own life.

Davis, author of GIRLS' POKER NIGHT and a former writer for "The Late Show with David Letterman," tackles real-life issues and infuses these rather somber moments with requisite levity and humor. Emily is a relatable woman, paralyzed at the prospect of taking chances and making choices. She has drifted through life by avoiding taking risks, but when a life-altering event occurs, Emily learns to confront and later embrace the life she has long been avoiding. As she observes, "Eventually the training wheels have to come off and it's always a surprise when you find that you don't need them."

Often second novels, particularly second novels after a successful first novel, are disappointing. "Ask Again Later" belies that expectation. Jill Davis's characters are even more alive, more memorable, and the reader cares about them even more. Without seeming a bit contrived, the novel follows an engaging and amusing plot throughout its various, but never meandering paths. The jump cuts are perfectly timed; the dialogue, perfectly pitched. We know these characters. Above all, readers are left awaiting a third novel.

    Book Description

Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory disease of the pancreatic gland which may lead to severe systemic response and still has not lost its fright for patients and clinicians. The knowledge about this disease, however, has increased considerably in the last two decades. Experimentally, on molecular and pathophysiologic bases we do understand more clearly the primary events in the initiation of acute pancreatitis and its repair. For the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis there are new diagnostic tools available and clinically it is of the utmost importance to establish a generally accepted classificaiton for the different entities of this disease. New treatment concepts have been introduced in the last years, for example the approach to biliary acute pancreatitis by endoscopic procedures and promising compounds for a specific therapy are currently evaluated, including drugs to interfere with the early stage of the disease and anti-infectives for th elate phase where infected pancreatic necrosis plays a predominant role. It has become evident that the approach to acute pancreatitis should be managed interdisciplinary to get the best treatment results. Leading authorities from around the world have contributed to this volume on all aspects of acute pancreatitis. Special attention was paid to new insight in pathophysiology and repair mechanisms, diagnosis and new treatment options in

This book is designed for resaerchers and medics that have a strong interest in the field of acute pancreatitis. It presents some of the work by leaders in this field. For those of you who are into pancreatitis research, the names as well as chapters may be familiar to you which makes it easier to read and comprehend. It also presents sometime different and occassionally opposing views of some of the authors. I find this book useful especially with reference to a more general presentation of different views of authors which is not restricted by their one paragraph conclusion in various journal publications. I rate this book a 5 star especially for those in the field of acute pancreatitis research.

    1 out of 5 stars really disappointing.......2004-01-11

Having read and enjoyed a number of the other books in the "for Beginners" series, I was amazed at how vastly inferior this one was. The comments in another reviewer's one-star review about the apparent lack of editing by anyone familiar with the English language and the absurdity of the illustrations were right on the mark. In the other books I've read from this series, the artwork is used to illustrate concepts in an amusing yet informative way. Here, however, most of the sketches are crude portraits of Fritz Perls, or (not kidding) other people drawn with big, angry scribbles in place of their faces.

On the other hand, the lack of art illustrating concepts may very well be due to the almost total lack of any concepts to illustrate. Most of the book consists of a not particularly illuminating biography of Fritz Perls, then there's some other material about the history of gestalt therapy centers in various cities and countries (which looks like it may have come from a promotional pamphlet put out by one of those centers.) There's very little on the actual theory and practice of gestalt therapy itself.

Overall, readers looking for biography and history and not overly sensitive to horrible writing and artwork may find some slight use for this; readers hoping to understand something about gestalt therapy itself most likely will not.

1 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time.......2003-01-11

If you live in South America and can get the book in its original language, it might be a reasonable introduction to the subject at a really basic level. As it is, the book appears to have been translated into English using a very poor computerised translation program, and much of it is simply unreadable. On top of this, it's littered with spelling errors and typos, and in the copy I have, even Fritz Perls's name is misspelled on the back cover. The artwork is pretty risible too. Avoid.

5 out of 5 stars On the Whole - A Great Place to Start.......2000-02-04

Gestalt for Beginners, (gestalt, which is incorporating the whole) is a great and fun book for anyone starting out in psychology or looking more into the Gestalt Theory which was made famous by Fritz Pearls. Author Sergio Sinay made a accessible approach inderstanding Pearls theories as well as close to being able to apply them. Giving a wonderful biography of Fritz from his many downs in his life to his peak moments near the end. Explaining the Gestalt approach in a lucid and simple style, I found this book to be one of the best written books in the Writers and Readers Beginners Books. Definately reccomended.

        Book Description

The discovery of p53 in 1979 marks the beginning of a most fascinating era of modern cancer research and molecular biology, an era that is still in full swing and does not show any signs of ending in the foreseeable future. p53 has emerged as a key tumor suppressor and important target for novel cancer therapy. For around 10 years, p53 was considered an oncogene with somewhat unusual features. However, a major paradigm shift occurred around 1988-89 when exciting new findings demonstrated that normal (wild type) p53 could inhibit transformation of cells in culture and that the p53 gene was mutated in a large fraction of human tumors. In fact, p53 appeared to be the most frequently mutated gene in cancer cells. Subsequent work during the 1990’s showed that p53 was a transcription factor that regulates many other genes, and that p53 can trigger apoptosis, the suicide program of the cell.

This book, written by world-leading p53 researchers including many of those who have shaped the field over the past 25 years, provides unique insights into the progress of the p53 field and the prospects for better cancer diagnosis and therapy in the future. It should be of interest to everybody working in cancer research, clinical oncology, and molecular biology, and indeed to anybody interested in science, medicine, as well as in recent developments of the ideas and concepts of the molecular biology of cancer.

Jonathan Kellerman has made the psychological thriller his own gripping province with his bestselling series of Alex Delaware novels. Now, Delaware's new adventure leads the sleuthing psychologist on a harrowing exploration into the realm he knows best: the human psyche, in all its complexity, mystery, and terrifying propensity for darkness.

"Been a while since I had me a nice little whodunit," homicide detective Milo Sturgis tells Alex Delaware. But there's definitely nothing nice about the brutal tableau behind the yellow crime-scene tape. On a lonely lover's lane in the hills of Los Angeles, a young couple lies murdered in a car. Each bears a single gunshot wound to the head. The female victim has also been impaled by a metal spike. And that savage stroke of psychopathic fury tells Milo this case will call for more than standard police procedure. As he explains to Delaware, "Now we're veering into your territory."

It is dark territory, indeed. The dead woman remains unidentified and seemingly unknown to everyone. But her companion has a name: Gavin Quick—and his troubled past eventually landed him on a therapist's couch. It's there, on familiar turf, that Delaware hopes to find vital clues. And that means going head-to-head with Dr. Mary Lou Koppel, a popular celebrity psychologist who fiercely guards the privacy of her clients...dead or alive.

But when there's another gruesomely familiar murder, Delaware surmises that his investigation has struck a nerve. As he trolls the twisted wreckage of Quick's tormented last days, what he finds isn't madness, but the cold-blooded method behind it. And as he follows a chain of greed, corruption, and betrayal snaking hideously through the profession he thought he knew, he'll discover territory where even he never dreamed of treading.

As provocative as it is suspenseful, Therapy is premier Kellerman that finds the award-winning author firing on all creative cylinders—and carrying readers on an electrifying ride to a place only he can take them, for an experience they won't soon forget.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it.......2007-09-19

My 2nd audiobook of Kellerman's Delaware and Sturgis team. First one was RAGE. First of all, the narrator Rubinstein is nothing short of perfect the way he portrays Delaware and Sturgis. I found the book interesting and entertaining from beginning to end. I liked it better than RAGE.
Ending was a little flat but not as bad as RAGE's. I recommend the book.....especially the audio book!

        2 out of 5 stars This was a disappointment.......2007-03-10

I had a hard time finishing this book. The characters were all created nicely, but the book bored me, the end was just too bland, nothing shocking, and no resolution for the reader. I won't read any more of his books.

        5 out of 5 stars He's a genius!.......2007-01-10

Jonathan Kellerman is my favorite author - he keeps you totally interested in the characters & "Therapy" in no exception. He's awesome!

4 out of 5 stars Certainly worth the read!.......2006-08-22

One thing you'll notice about Jonathan Kellerman is his ability to put such attention to detail -- with "detail" being the operative word. Almost from one page to the next, the author vividly describes the different scenes and characters. And while some might argue that Kellerman "overdescribes" at times, it is precisely this degree of detail that I consider to be one of his greatest talents and selling points as a writer.

Alex and Milo team up once again to get to the bottom of multiple murders that are presumed to be sexually-motivated. The first murder is that of a young couple found dead in car; the victims are a young man identified as Gavin Quick, but his female companion has been brutally impaled by an iron rod and she remains unknown. In the days following their deaths, a high-profile celebrity psychologist, with a possible connection to the first victims, is found dead in her home, impaled as well...

The book's ending delivers a surprising twist -- one that I didn't see coming. Some questions are also left unanswered. No doubt, you'll be left thinking a few things over after reading this novel.

While not absolutely essential, I recommend that newcomers to the Alex Delaware series start by reading a few of Kellerman's earlier books. This will give you the opportunity to learn about Robin, Alex's longtime girlfriend. Both have gone their separate ways at this point, and while Robin makes a few brief appearances here, Delaware has found a new love in a charming woman named Allison.

To date I've also read the author's "The Clinic", "Bad Love" and "Survival of the Fittest", all of which I've found intriguing and disturbing (some more than others, but all were good). As for "Therapy", Kellerman takes you on an interesting journey of insight and discovery, through every chapter. And I'm pleased to recommend this book.

        4 out of 5 stars convoluted fun.......2006-06-21

This is the first Kellerman book I've read, and I want more. "Therapy" has all of the proper ingredients for a great crime novel: Witty, realistic dialogue, widely varied characters, and twisty plotting. And it has corrupt Beverly Hills psychologists. What more could you want?

I didn't mind not having background knowledge of the main characters, because that wasn't important to the story. A few paragraphs about their prior crime-solving escapades or love lives didn't weigh the plot down.
