Book Description
Baby Buddhas: A Guide for Teaching Meditation to Children is the first book to show parents and educators how to teach meditation to preschool-age children. Through irresistible photos and easy-to-follow text, Lisa Desmond clearly explains her copyrighted method of teaching meditation to children 18 months to three years old. Baby Buddhas also highlights the benefits of meditation for parents and children and shows how to incorporate meditation into family life.
Part One, "Creating Your Space," explains how to create a simple meditation space in the home or school and explains the importance of sound, posture, and breathing. In Part Two, "Adult Meditations," adults learn three meditations to give them an opportunity to learn and meditate on their own before teaching children. Part Three, "Children's Meditations," includes 10 meditations suitable for children, organized from simplest to most complex. The children's meditations include the "Sunshine Meditation," in which the child learns to breathe in a "sunshine ball of light" full of love. The "Om Meditation" helps children calm themselves and feel love, even when their parents are away. All the children's meditations use repetition and simple words and images that children can easily understand.
Parents who have used Lisa's techniques marvel at how their children have become calmer and more focused since they started meditating. With Baby Buddhas parents and educators can give the children in their care a gift that will last a lifetime.
Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and helpful.......2006-02-18
The techniques are drawn from a variety of religious traditions, and the author does a good job of being specific and clear about how to set up your space, what props to collect, and how to approach the feared and revered practice of meditation with kids. This book also contains wonderful, inspriring, color photos of glowing children getting back to their true selves. my only complaint is that there is a lot of time spent re-hashing meditations that are essentially the same. I would have liked a more general descpriotn of types of chants, thoughts, and breathing techniques rather than a play-by-play of the "breathe in love/joy/light breathe out fear/anger/bad" in multiple chapters. One of a kind, and a great tool for mindful mamas and papas.
Excellent/ 5 stars.......2006-01-15
This book is perfect for busy parents trying to introduce their children to energy, meditation and other high level concepts. The author presents information in an easy to follow and read format.I enjoyed that the suggestions were not too out there to actually implement.
I am also a fan of the meditation/relaxation CD series "Indigo Dreams". The book and this CD have made it possible for me to introduce these healthy concepts to my children. (Sorry about the one star. I pressed the wrong button and the system will not let me change it) This is a 5 star book
A great resource for any parent!.......2005-05-24
We purchased the book after our daughter learned meditation in Lisa's program. We were truly amazed at the coping and calming techniques she learned as 2 year old. We have used the techniques in the book to help manage and enhance everyday life as well as for dealing with difficult situations (seperation, death, etc...). Lisa has made the process amazingly simple. It is an incredible tool for helping to connect with your child while providing them with some important skills.
Simple guidelines for setting up a meditation space.......2004-09-09
In Baby Buddhas: A Guide For Teaching Meditation To Children, author Lisa Desmond draws upon her more than 25 years of experience and expertise teaching meditation to children ages 18 months to three years, and children preschool through eight grade, to instruct parents and care givers on how to go about teaching preschool-aged children on how to meditate. Simple guidelines for setting up a meditation space, learning specific terms, specific meditations for adults (sending love to a child, cherishing hope for world peace) and children ('OM', cleansing breath, catching blessings, and much more) fill this gentle and patient guide to balancing family and spiritual needs. Color photographs, creative ideas, and guidelines round out an all-around superb guide for parents.

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely fabulous! Brought me back in shape while spending valuable time with my daughter........2005-08-24
I really enjoyed this book. Not only is it clearly written, well-photographed and a good size but it proved inspirational. Being a yoga novice did not prevent me from trying some of the even more complex positions as the text is intuitive and the photographs are easy to follow.
Although most of the yoga is geared for mom there is plenty of material for your baby too - the last review seems to have missed the subtitle of "The yoga workout for new moms". How much can you expect a baby to do? Downward dog? I think not!!
Diappointing.......2004-07-30
The description says that this is yoga to do with your baby. When I got the book it seemed like 90% of the time the baby was on the floor while mom was doing the yoga. I don't need a new book to give me that idea. I can already do yoga with my son on the floor next to me. I wanted, and thought this book would give, ideas on how to do my yoga practice with him.
Excellent Resource!.......2003-03-12
I am a fitness instructor for prenatal and post partum women and I just love this book. I debated between several of the "mom-yoga" type books and I'm so glad I decided on this one. The exercises are safe, easy to follow, and wonderfully illustrated. It is even easy to follow if you are not a "yogi". My only criticism is that the binding does not lay flat so it's difficult to review the exercises during your workout. Otherwise, I recommend it for both prenatal (an entire chapter is dedicated) and postpartum women.
Beautiful and simple.......2003-01-27
This is one of a very few books that has simple excersises, done with your baby, and illustrated with clear and beautiful photos of moms actually doing this! If you need a mommy and me yoga book, buy this and you won't need any others!
This book will change your pregnancy.......2002-10-03
When my wife Sue started getting noticeably pregnant, she found Jyothi's class and it became one of the highlights of her entire pregnancy. If you're not lucky enough to live in New York and attend Jyothi's classes, this book is like bringing her into your home for a private lesson. Her voice comes through in the book, and the photos are clear (and really cute!). If any husbands are reading this, give Yoga Mama, Buddha Baby as a gift to your wife--she will be in a great mood for all nine months!

Customer Reviews:
Fun chick lit.......2006-08-06
If you're into chick lit and ESPECIALLY if you remember the 80s well, you'll love this book.
Best way to describe it is the Chinese-American Bridget Jones. Absolutely adorable and just as good as her first book and the prequel to this one titled "The Dim Sum of All Things"
Not Keltner's best; however, pleasant story.......2006-07-25
After reading Dim Sum of All Things, I became a big fan of Keltner's work. My biggest question was whether or not she would be able to break from the theme and writing style that worked so well for her in Dim Sum. Unfortunately, the answer is no. Dim Sum had a much better plot line and the small intricate stories she paints to animate her Lindsey character worked so well together that the reader was compelled to believe they were in Lindsey's shoes. In Buddha Baby, the overall plot is at best, weak. Keltner attempts to tell small stories of Lindsey's life, but this time, it does not work. Dim Sum was a breath of fresh air with plenty of stories that Asian people can especially identify with. The moments where you wanted to laugh or cry out loud from experiencing moments exactly like Lindsey are no longer there in Buddha Baby.
As an asian myself, a lot of her stories hit home and I have yet to read any work of fiction or non-fiction that even tries to explain much of what we face, especially being of the 1.5 generation. I have to hand it to Keltner to even attempt such a feat. I will forever cherish her Lindsey character, but her storytelling of Lindsey's Asian and American character duality has run its course. We barely get to see any this in Buddha Baby. I will still read Keltner's next installment should she choose to continue it though. That Lindsey character she created is just wonderful.
Not bad, but not great.......2006-07-15
First of all, I really enjoyed Keltner's first novel, "The Dim Sum of All Things." I thought it was amusing, clever, entertaining, and completely right-on in some of her observations of people and customs. With that said, I felt that "Buddha Baby" lacked the same freshness and energy that made her first novel so entertaining. I mean, it wasn't BAD but it wasn't great, either. I felt that some of the romantic scenes with Michael, although sweet, lagged. And the story line explaining why Yun Yun was so mean? It just seemed a stretch. But I did like her characterization of Dustin. He seemed delightfully unpredictable and untameable....I actually give the novel 3.5 stars.
Not as fun as Dim Sum.......2006-06-29
After reading Dim Sum of all Things, I was dying to read the sequel. While it was a cute read, the first half got off to a weak start, and I also had a problem with her sex metaphors. They seemed too coy and timid.
The second half moved at a much better pace, especially with exploring her grandmother's past. The story thread with Dustin wasn't explored enough. I wanted more internal struggle on her part, as well as more of a fight between her and Michael, especially when she spills the beans. That bit of conflict got swept under the rug pretty quickly.
Fluff..........2006-02-07
An interesting look at the lifestyle and thoughts of a Chinese American woman in San Francisco, but not very deep or meaningful. A family mystery subplot is never fully realized, which makes one wonder why it was included in the first place. Also, the author seems rather fixated on interracial relationships, but Dustin is too one-dimensional a character to explore this properly. Michael doesn't supply any dramatic tension either, as he's pretty far away from the action. This book would really rate 3.5 stars instead of 3 if it weren't for Keltner's truly annoying habit of describing sex in horrible metaphors. Repeatedly. I mean, "the bone dance"?

Book Description
Hang on for a Wild Journey through the Political and Spiritual Adventures of the Baby-Boom Generation
Join Wes "Scoop" Nisker as he takes us on a hilarious, wild ride through the heyday of the Beats and the Hippies and the birth of the modern environmental movement, and the surge of Buddhism in the West.
Customer Reviews:
A Personal Story of Spiritual Journey.......2004-05-29
Wes Nisker has here presented a rather light-hearted account of his own spiritual journey into Buddhism. He takes us through the Beat, Hippie, and New Age movements to the present, more mature, spiritual association with Eastern philosophy and Buddhism in particular. While not a deep book, it does give some insight into the history of the Buddhist movement in the United States and why Buddhism is as popular as it is now. To a large degree this popularity is due to the common sense approach of Buddhism to every day life and the unspectacular claims it makes. It also does not require exact literal belief and is thus quite open to science. In essence we are told that there is nothing to be gained because we have the ability for enlightenment within each of us. We need only connect to that awareness within. Despite this apparent simplicity, the practice of Buddhist meditation is far from easy. It requires commitment that takes time to develop, yet is open to everyone.
I do not agree with Nisker on every detail (it would be unusual if I did). For example, I'm not sure that I would quite give the blank check he gives to the evolutionary psychologists. This is, however, a minor quibble. I don't expect him to be one with all of the scientific arguments of the day.
All in all this book is a very enjoyable read and I very much recommend it to be read if you are on an airplane as I was when I read it.
As It Is.......2004-01-07
This book endeavours to discuss about Buddha-nature with humour and using the author's life experiences. The author's life could be considered as colourful as he travelled to the East various times seeking for the truth, a DJ-journalist-activist, an ex-hippie who embraced the peace & loving messages. He talked candidly about science & spirituality, of how they intertwine with one another & how prophetic the Eastern philosophies are as they mentioned what's been proven or suggested by contemporary scientists thousands of years before; he questioned about the benefits of knowing the absolute truths & if they do bring any betterments to our well-beings; pondering the question of why do we feel so empty even when our standard of living is far superior than five decades ago; consumerism; George W. Bush & the world that we are living now after 9-11; suggesting USA to resign from its post as the world's superpower & back to its origin & perhaps, this world would become a better place; how the world is becoming smaller & assimmilations of various religions & beliefs; relevancy of spirituality towards saving our precious environment, & so forth. Wes writes differently from Jack Kornfield (another established author upon spirituality), who happens to be his friend as well. Overall, this is quite a enchanting book to read. As Buddha-nature, we have to sense "the" moment. Whilst this book doesn't fully convey the Buddha-nature, it does give us some insight about the ups & downs of keeping up with the practice in order to embrace this world fully. Highly recommended
A Fine Spiritual History of the Baby Boomer Generation.......2003-10-05
Wes "Scoop" Nisker, a self-professed Buddhist traces the spiritual history of a generation from the questioning of our parents values to living under the current George W. Bush conservative climate.
He cover the beatniks, hippies, drugs, the importance of music, the disillusionment with the sixties, the turn towards introspection and fascination with eastern philosophies, the "me" decade of the eighties and the subsequent current apathy.
This is a fine documentation of a unique generation that grew up during a time of unprecedented prosperity and had trouble figuring out what to do with it. The author is not only a witness to this process but is also a participant and shares many personal stories from each many eras. As a former disk jockey from the once very progressive San Francisco KSAN radio station, he met and interacted with key players who influenced this generation like Allen Watts. He is also honest enough to write about his own doubts, misgivings and personal confusion, which is symbolic of this generation.
In many ways this generation path, in this reviewer's opinion, was predicted by the psychology of Abraham H. Maslow who postulated a hierarchy of needs (this used to be taught in Psych. 101 courses, I wonder if it still is?). A human being is always in dynamic interaction with its environment and once basic needs such as air, water, food and shelter have been met, then new needs emerge; belonging, relationships, the need for self expression and the need to understand our relationship to the rest of the universe. It's easy to understand when your hungry and you need food, however it is not as easy to understand what you need when you seemingly have everything and yet have an underlying feeling of restlessness and dissatisfaction. Indeed, there is no universal agreement about the meaning of one of Maslow's most famous postulation, the need for "self actualization".
Scoop's book does a nice job of capturing the essence of a generation faced with dealing with questions that were mostly unprecedented, at least on a mass scale, by any previous generation. Unfortunately, it seems like the beginning of the new century is more about dwindling resources and back to the concerns of basic survival needs. The subtitle of this book could also have been, in the words of rock star-philosopher David Crosby, (It Was) " A Long Time coming, Gonna Be A Long Time Gone".
A great book!.......2003-05-15
I found this book to be hilarious, insightful, fun and informative. The sheer scope of Mr. Nisker's life experiences is mind-boggling and his retelling of these adventures and explorations makes for a very entertaining experience for the reader.
I'm at the tail end of the Boomer generation but I found plenty to relate to. Music, politics, religion, mysticism, culture...it's all there. And Mr. Nisker's wonderful sense of humor shines through every page. At times laugh-out-loud-funny, I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in popular culture and world events.

Buddhaýs Mystery Unraveled.......2003-05-15
A young woman half-American and half-French, spending the summer in the palace in Bangkok, Thailand with her photographer father didn't waste any time finding a mystery. Lisette Paul came upon the disappearance of the Emerald Buddha very suddenly. With the help of a few new found friends and bustling city, Lisette figures out the Buddha's puzzling disappearance. I liked this book a lot. It was very descriptive. I felt like I was there and could feel and see everything. It also included a lot of truth and real facts about the palace. It combined facts, fiction and mystery all together. Just when you think it's all over, it gets even more intense.
Compared to other books, I like this one a lot more than even science fiction, which few books I've read even close to being like this were. On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give this book 8 stars.

Book Description
The Smiles of the Baby Buddha has been published with the idea that it might serve as a guide to both the beauty and the faults of Kyŏngju, and by extension, an introduction to Korean culture. This book also serves as a good guidebook for foreigners visiting Kyŏngju, and foreigners who come to understand Korean culture and the innate spirit of the People.Whereas many works on Korean cultural sites are little more than guidebooks, Prof. Yu's work provides the reader with a deeper perspective, explaining each site's significance instead of merely listing unrelated facts.
