Mr. Shay has clearly done his research and used his qualified experiences and level-headedness to lay out convincing and practical solutions to the crisis that faces American Jewry. I was intrigued by a review in the Jewish Week and devoured the book. I've since bought copies for the Rabbi and President of my Conservative Synagogue... bought more copies to give to our Seder guests.. Shay brings a thoroughly refreshing perspective on both the problems confronting American Jewry as well as possible solutions. He is totally non-partisan or denominational. His only agenda is securing the future of American Jewry. He's critical of Orthodoxy for assuming that if they are successful they can save us on their own. Shays shows they don't have the critical mass. He's critical of Reform for patroliniar decent and the havoc it creates.. and he's critical of Conservative Judaism for loosing it's position as the largest denomination... if they are loosing members... we all loose. You don't have to buy all his solutions.. but they will certainly make you think. Get the book. Read it. Get copies for agents of change and let's energize American Jewry!

Tommy and Igoe way back........2007-05-19
This purchase was my second of this book & CD series, as I wore out the last CD. I also have, and use, the DVD available that accompanies this series. I purchased them somewhere between STICK CONTROL and Joe Porcaro's DRUM SET METHOD, and they're part of my routine now. I've only been playing for a little over 2 years, and nothing could replace the best teacher in Atlanta, JACK DUKES, but Jack was the one who showed me this Tommy Igoe course. It covers a little of everything and a lot of some of it, and it's helped me to progress at an accelerated pace and find the things I like most to play. The grooves, minus the drums, are long-playing, longer than some of the other practice CDs I've used that only have short sections. I was 51 when my husband bought me the drum set, so I have to learn fast.

Great resource for serious drummers. I found it a great resource to learn new beats and perfect the old ones. Nothing worse that having a drummer that only knows a few grooves.
I specially like the "world groove" section. I understand the chances of my band asking me to play a Mambo, Meregue, Salsa or Mozambique are slim, but I can use elements from these grooves elsewhere. Definitely recommend.

This book is full of great beats for all levels. The CD has excellent tracks for developing feel with a band and leaves plenty of room for improv. I highly recommend this book for beginning players all the way to a pro that wants a chart reading challenge.

I would recommend this product but not by itself. You really need the DVD too, because the music is from the lessons but in full length. I'm diggin the variety of grooves and there's something for every drummer whether your just starting out or you think your ready to go on tour!

I've been a drummer for about 20 years now and I found this CD/Book combo to be a very useful practice tool. It starts out providing basic rudiments, fills... which increase in complexity as you move through the book. The book and exercises end with 4 or 5 "charts" which you are required to follow in order to play along with the companion CD. These are not simple songs and the exercises are quite lengthy. The CD/book combo covers a variety of musical styles, tempos and groove. I recommend it for intermediate to advanced percussionists.

Tommy is good. This is done by really talented teacher and cool drummer. If you are interested primarily in blues as much as I am, the is another one I really liked Blues drumming techniques and musicianship with Dave Russell 4 DVDs set This set teaches essentials and to my opinion should be sold in a set with every drum set. The presentation is very clear and still inspirational and it is something that every beginner is needed.

I really recommend this DVD. It does exactly what it should. It shows a variety of grooves, focusing on the core stuff and not the icing. From, achievable straight 8 patterns to syncopated Brazilian music. You have a lot of material to go through. Top notch for beginners (like me) and probably informative for advanced.
Tommy Igoe takes all the patterns slow, in a very pedagogical way so you can grasp it hearing every single thing that's happening and then fast, were he introduces some minor modifications than make the pattern sound like music and not only a "drum machine" pattern. I got the pack that included a MP3-CD with backing tracks, a very neat feature, I highly recommend this.
The only thing I think could give this DVD a sixth star, would be a chapter on common fills, and how to approach them in a musical way (or something in that line). 100% satisfaction guaranteed

Combining traditional Latin claves with a funk backbeat. I bought this book / cd combo to improve my bass playing and drumming. (Yep! I play both.) I enjoy Latin / rock type music and wanted to become more familiar with the various styles and rhythms of this music. This book is awesome! It is also not fot the beginner or the timid unless you are dead serious about your playing. This will not only improve your playing, but your reading as well. The CD's start with a group of songs performed by the band. Then they break into LOTS of examples of ALL different styles of Latin music. Once you think you have it all mastered, the songs you heard at the beginning of the cd are there without drums / bass depending on which cd you want to play along with. Yes there are 2 cd's. One for drums, one for bass. By the way, all the songs on the cd have studio grade charts in the back of the book for you to follow. If this book doesn't keep you busy for a long time, you must already be a seasoned studio professional. Even if you are, there's probably something in here for you. ENJOY!

This book is a goldmine of information and ideas pertaining to the addition of the salsa feel in your playing. The authors lay out, in both English and Spanish, the different latin styles and feels clearly, and the included cd's make learning the material that much easier. The different patterns discussed include the clave, tumbao, songo, guaguanco, cha-cha, mozambique, and afro-cuban styles. Also included are 6 songs (complete with charts) for the student to play with (recorded with and without drum/bass tracks). This book is a must have for a player of any level. It was recommended to me by a bass player friend of mine who plays in a touring group specializing in latin/flaminco music. It has made a huge difference in my playing, and I've been drumming for 23 years. Get this book and enjoy the new world of ideas and possibilities!

Solid Foundational Book.......2006-03-13
This book is one of the best books out there for the budding bassist, in my opinion. Ed Friedland, an experienced instructor and seasoned studio bassist, really lays down a solid foundation for understanding the role of the bass and how to fit in with the band.
Some definate pro's would be Ed's lively writing style and clear descriptions of the examples being played. Instead of pulling random grooves out of nowhere, he really gives solid insights on the music. And the examples are clearly first rate and give good bredth within different genres. He also gives very good ideas simply on becoming comfortable playing the instrument, which I've found is one of the biggest concerns for beginners.
The book does not go without a few cautionary bits, however. Ed Friedland highly recommends getting a drum machine to jam along with (he even writes out the drum parts). This naturally, is great advice if used, but without a drum machine (or, better yet, a real live drummer!), the book really can't be enjoyed to the same extent. So if you don't have a drum machine and have absolutely no interest in getting one ever, this book might not be the best option. Also, one should note that though this book covers many different genres, it doesn't go into real depth concerning any particular one. So, if, for example you dig motown, heavy metal, or whatever, try getting a book that focuses specifically on that style in addition to this book. Concerning just pure insight and ecclectic examples, this book rocks, but this shouldn't be the only book in your bass library if you are interested in diving deep into a specific genre.
The Answer!!!.......2006-03-01
After attending Bass at the Beach 2005, I came away knowing how important time and groove is to a bass player. My whole goal was to become a solid groove player once I came back. If you have any questions or difficulties about rhythm or keeping a strong groove than this book is the answer. I have never felt super solid about reading syncopated rhythms even though I have read numerous books and been told countless ways to try and learn them. This book has answered that problem for me. A drum machine is highly recommended as the book dissects the drum parts that should be programmed in to play each bass groove over. This is the first book that I've come across that really explains "feel" from many different angles. I could go on and on about it but the basic gist is that this book has me thinking about rhythm in a whole new way and it is helping my bass playing more than anything else that I've read. This will be my Bass Bible for years to come...Thanks Ed!

This is not a typical book with bunch of licks without explenation. Here everything is explained in detail - how drums (should) work with bass in different styles. Great musical examples although it would be much better if music was split into seperate channels for bass and drums. Great book worth money.

Salsa is a popular dance music developed by Puerto Ricans in New York City during the 1960s and 70s, based on Afro-Cuban forms. By the 1980s, the Colombian metropolis of Cali emerged on the global stage as an important center for salsa consumption and performance. Despite their geographic distance from the Caribbean and from Hispanic Caribbean migrants in New York City, Caleños (people from Cali) claim unity with Cubans, Puerto Ricans and New York Latinos by virtue of their having adopted salsa as their own. I took from Rick while I attended Berklee - he is the man...period. His classes/lessons were based on this book (he was writing it while I attended) and it really gives you the tools you need to become your own person behind the kit. This will make you a better player with a larger vocabulary. I am always trying to come up with new ways to apply the rudiments. Now - you can have Rick's class without the Berklee tuition - however, Rick's humor is worth the price of the credit hour alone. He sets you straight...and this book will set you straight too.
Creative Use of Rudiments for Drumset.......2007-05-16
Its a great book with a low price that gives you lots of ideas on how the standard drum rudiments can be applied to the drumset. The basic rudiments are all listed here of course, and then each one is broken down into grooves and moves that are applied to the whole drumset. For example, it shows you how to take the double stroke roll and open it up on all the tom-toms and not just the snare drum. It wont hurt to check it out and have it in your library, as I am sure I learnt a few new things from it.

I like this book Rudiment Grooves for Drum Set. After practicing some of these grooves, it has tightened up my playing. I've been playing for several years and my biggest weakness is drum fills. These grooves based on the drum rudiments gave me a library of drum fills to play when the music calls for it. The most significant thing this book offers is that not only does it teach you the groove but it teaches you how to play them in time making them sound musical thereby tightening up your sound on the drums. In order to fully appreciate what the book has to offer, you really have to practice these grooves until they become second nature to you. Once I got the grooves down, it just simply made my drum playing sound more mature. Thanks, Rick Considine, for your contribution to the drum world of music.

This book is ok. It has SOME Rudiment based grooves, but not nearly as much as I had hoped for. Most of the book deals with fills more than it does grooves or beats. The number of rudiments applied is also sort of limited.
As an intermediate drummer looking to take it up a notch, the book fell short for me.
Going back to the basics--or: less is more.......2005-10-03
I found the material in this book to be extremely helpful. I first practiced the 26 Rudiments for a week or so, then began working on the excercises daily. Honestly, I discovered that by going back to the basics (the rudiments) I was able to play more efficiently, maintain a beter groove, and provide a great deal more feeling when playing.

I think this would be a great book, but I feel it spoke more to moms who are done having kids and have older kids. This is just my take on it. I have one child and one on the way, so it didn't appeal to me as much as I thought it would. I mean, although I'm not done having kids, I still want to "get my groove back"! :-)
Awful book- her husband should be mortified.......2005-10-19
....since she makes him look like the worst man alive. Anecdotes about how she has to beg him to do his part as a father and how he negatively reacts to her pregnancies really set my teeth on edge. Am I the only woman alive whose husband truly cherishes his role as a father? Even worse, I put 2 and 2 together and realized the man in question is none other then THE Jimmy Iovine, famous producer. Is THAT how she was able to get this drivel published? I agree with the previous reviewer who noted the overabundance of run on sentences as well. Don't waste your money on this book:The Iovines have plenty as it is.

This is especially true for this particular era, when cover art was truly an art form, with talented designers handcrafting individualized jackets influenced by surrealism, cubism, and modern artists of the day. And as Tony Bennett says in his preface, "they were large enough to make you feel like you were taking home your very own work of art."
Author Eric Kohler, a graphic designer and album cover artist himself, selected these 250 gorgeous covers from his own collection of over 3,000. He offers a captivating history of the early record industry, addressing the invention of the phonograph in 1877, the near demise of the industry due to competition with radio, and the rejuvenating introduction of the jukebox in 1935. Prior to Columbia Records' release of the 33 rpm vinyl LP in 1948, music fans were restricted to 78s--easily breakable, shellac-based records that could only hold four minutes' worth of music on each side. Victor Records made a competitive strike with the 45 (hence turntables with 33, 45, and 78 options), but its success was limited. Until the 1980s, the LP ruled the land with its roomy cardboard cover--a perfect canvas for artists.
Kohler's focus is on the graphic artists themselves--revolutionaries of the industry. Previously, albums had plain covers that advertised phonograph and record companies rather than performers. But when designer Alex Steinweiss entered the scene in 1939 (at the tender age of 23) he changed the business of cover art forever. This is a fantastic book for album cover designs. But as I was warned, the glue on the binding really does gives out after the first reading. But the content is so incredible, it's worth purchasing this book...just be sure to handle it carefully so you don't loose your pages.
Sound pictures........2002-12-14
Mr Kohler presents two hundred and fifty covers (from his large collection) which he rightly thinks show the best of album design in the early years of the LP. He features eight artist/designers who created some of the most distinctive work in cover art. Two of them are my favorites, David Stone Martin who gave Norman Granz's Clef label some beautiful cover illustrations (twenty are shown) and Reid Miles who created the east coast look to Blue Note Records. Unfortunately only four of his covers are shown but you can see dozens more in the two books by Graham Marsh: The Cover Art of Blue Note Records and The Cover Art of Blue Note Records, Vol.2. The other six designers range from the unique illustrations of RCA's Jim Flora to the work of Swiss born designer Erik Nitsche and his semi abstract work for Decca. Record companies are also featured and you can see the beginnings of the Capitol Records house style, I think they were the only major company to produce consistently well designed covers with excellent photography and typography.
Though all these covers are interesting to look at I don't think too many work as complete design units, that is image and text complement each other, mostly they are images with text added later. One cover that I like is on page eighty-one, it shows a file-card box and the albums title, 'Guide to Jazz' is typed on a card which is resting against the box, the tabs of the other cards have musical instruments on them, a simple creative idea that works. Strangely the designer is unknown.
I doubt you will see as good a coverage of the early years of the LP as this (well produced) book but have a look at this title that concentrates on jazz covers from the fifties and sixties, Jazz West Coast: Artwork of Pacific Jazz Records. It has dozens of examples of creativity on paper twelve inches square, somehow CD covers just can't compete with that.

"Groove"y Covers.......2002-06-05
Being a music lover, I've never been partial to one type of music only--I have a passion for everything from rock to classical, pop to country, even from jazz to techno. Something in all of these styles intrigues me. And how intriguing is this incredible book by Eric Kohler. I never thought I'd "get into" a book dedicated solely to album covers from 1940-1960, but I was wrong. The music lover in me kicked in, and I found myself fascinated with the glorious color photos, the revealing and well-researched text, and with the artists themselves. This album cover artistry really has diminished with the advent of the much-smaller compact disc (which is a truly disappointing fact), but Mr. Kohler's book rapturously captures the vividness of the times, the artists, the moods, and the music of those two decades. It took me back to the time when I myself used to stare at the covers of my records for hours while playing them over and over again - this classic book uncovers that wonderful feeling inside you once more. And to top it all off, Mr. Tony Bennett himself writes an introduction that's both classy and sentimental. This is a great book for any music lover with a coffee table -- and an open mind towards how art has influenced music (and vice versa) in so many ways.
Long, lost days of style........2001-08-01
As a graphic designer, I get so flustered when I see the same old CD covers now: a photo of the artist or band, and their name scribbled on top, or a really un-inspired text treatment, most likely using some wretched Photoshop tool like, alien skin or eye candy- blech! Perhaps modern day CD's skimp on the design work of the covers because they are so much smaller now. But back in the days of LP's and 45's art was generously splashed on covers. Full-colored, stylized and oh, so hip! Each one fit to be framed and displayed. "In the Groove: Vintage Record Graphics, 1940-1960" effectively chronicles the history of this long, lost art-form in a picture-book style. I say picture-book, because of the lack of background information on many of the pieces, in fact there are quite a few pieces that are listed as "unknown designer", how unfortunate! Some poor old designer dedicated his or her life to creating some stunning art to attract music lovers' eyes to this or that particular record, and now they're the "unknown designer". Eric Kohler did his best grouping together styles of record graphics, so seeing the evolution of style was very nicely mapped-out. Nice quality paper, nice printing... would've been nicer in hardback. Still, this is one of my favorite books!
Cool Collection of overlooked medium.......2001-02-21
I liked this book so much that I bought a copy for my record-collecting boyfriend and a DJ friend with a varied and ecclectic vinyl collection.
When I thought of record cover art, I thought of those fantasy-styled "YES" covers, or the metal band covers of the 80's. I had no idea about how many cool vintage record covers were out there.
The book focuses on covers from 1940-1960. You'll find many jazz, swing and vocalists represented here. The reproductions are excellent and the variety is impressive. While most covers are reproduced in 3x3inches, quite a few are refresented as full pages which is about a 9-inch square. It is organized by artist and record company, showing you how the artist's style influenced the cover.
I highly recommend it for record collectors, vintage enthusiasts, graphic designers/illustrators and those who love old things. It made me miss the 12-inch vinyl covers all the more and has inspired me to track specific albums down. CDs can never match the emotional connection that vinyl did.

I found this book very interesting as it shows the basic setup stages of "Propellerhead Reason 3" As I am a professional in music production, I found some of the infomation a bit to basic and not really what I was looking for. On the other hand it helped me with a few confusions but other than that, I more or less already know what to do within "Propellerhead Reason 3!" I think this book is very good and therefore is a good start for beginners in the electronic music scene, however it can also help out the odd pro with one or two things that you might have not known!

all kidding aside, its a great book. I was a little put off by what seemed to be a lack of actual song structure. The book is designed to walk you through exercizes to get you used to using the software in this manner. The author encourages that you follow along b ut to create on your own. The book is like having an experienced friend lookin over your shoulder and offering advice. Its definitly worth the price of admission.
