Book Description

From the Introduction:

ghet-to
n. (Merriam-Webster dictionary) Italian, from Venetian dialect ghèto island where Jews were forced to live; literally, foundry (located on the island), from ghetàr, to cast; from Latin jactare to throw
1: a quarter of a city in which Jews were formerly required to live
2:
a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure
3a:
an isolated group b: a situation that resembles a ghetto especially in conferring inferior status or limiting opportunity

ghet-to adj. (twenty-first-century everyday parlance)
1a: behavior that makes you want to say “Huh?” b: actions that seem to go against basic home training and common sense
2: used to describe something with inferior status or limited opportunity. Usually used with “so.” ;
3: a quarter of a city in which members of a minority group live, especially because of social, legal, or economic pressure.
4: common misusage: authentic, Black, keepin’ it real

As current and all-consuming as “ghetto” is in these days of gold teeth, weaves (blond and red), Pepsi-filled baby bottles, and babymamas, ghetto has a long history. The original ghetto was in the Jewish quarter of Venice, a Catholic city. Before it became the Jewish quarter, this area contained an iron foundry or ghèto, hence the name. These days, ghetto no longer refers to where you live, but to how you live. It is a mindset, and not limited to a class or a race. Some things are worth repeating: ghetto is not limited to a class or a race. Ghetto is found in the heart of the nation’s inner cities as well as the heart of the nation’s most cherished suburbs; among those too young to understand (we hope) and those old enough to know better; in little white houses, and all the way to the White House; in corporate corridors, Ivy League havens, and, of course, Hollywood. More devastating, ghetto is also packaged in the form of music, TV, books, and movies, and then sold around the world. Bottom line: ghetto is contagious, and no one is immune, no matter how much we like to suck our teeth and shake our heads at what we think is only happening someplace else…

From an award-winning journalist and cultural commentator comes a provocative examination of the impact of “ghetto” mores, attitudes, and lifestyles on urban communities and American culture in general.

Cora Daniels takes on one of the most explosive issues in our country today in this thoughtful critique of America’s embrace of a ghetto persona that demeans women, devalues education, celebrates the worst African American stereotypes, and contributes to the destruction of civil peace. Her investigation exposes the central role of corporate America in exploiting the idea of ghetto-ness as a hip cultural idiom, despite its disturbing ramifications, as a means of making money. She showcases Black rappers raised in privileged families who have taken on the ghetto persona and sold millions of albums, and non-Black celebrities, such as Paris Hilton, who have adopted ghetto attitudes and styles in pursuit of attention and notoriety. She explores, as well, her own relationship to the ghetto and the ways in which she is both part of and outside the Ghettonation.

Infused with humor and entertaining asides—including lists of events and people that the author nominates for the Ghetto Hall of Fame, and a short section written entirely in ghetto slang—Ghettonation is a timely and engrossing report on a controversial social phenomenon. Like Bill Cosby’s infamous, much-discussed comments about the problems within the Black community today, it is sure to trigger widespread interest and heated debate.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - A Mindset.......2007-09-29

Author Cora Daniels gives us her take on what she believes is ghetto. She states that ghetto is a mindset and no one is immune from it be it, inner city or suburban residents. While this is not a critical analysis of the ghetto phenomenon, Daniels does site some sociological ills and possible blame. That in itself is cause for debate.

Often portrayed with humor, the author interviews an array of people on what their take is of the term ghetto; what ghetto is to one may not be ghetto to another, be it children or adults. She speaks with boys hanging on street corners, boys and girls who are doing well academically and have college set in their minds and those who have done well financially, but chose to stay in the inner city, further demonstrating that ghetto is a mindset and running to suburbia does not eliminate the ghetto mentality, nor the chance you may see not ghetto. While GHETTONATION by Cora Daniels can cause a serious debate, it is also a reality check for many.

A Great book that will have a broad appeal to people of all ages! To those of you who feel like the book didn't offer you enough, I think that you miss the point that this book is written not just for the highly educated but its also written in a style that is of interest to the young men and women on the street corner. BrotherMan on the corner is not interested in black socialism or a book about black culturalism. This book is a wake up call to all people in the sense that it's asking you to think about what it is that you do and why you do those things that are considered to be ghetto. On that note, Mrs Daniels hit the mark. Pass it on to those that are ghetto fabulous and see if you have something worthwhile to talk about! Peace!

5 out of 5 stars 'Should be on Oprah's Book Club list.......2007-08-25

Some weeks ago I watched as a mainstream television newscaster referred to the police as the "po po's," a term that is, at this moment used by inner city youth. It's obvious that when such language becomes "accepted" by the mainstream, the words are on their way out...or are they?

Author Cora Daniels would probably say that such usage is further indication of the ghettonization of America and she's more than likely correct. In her amusing and thought-provoking book, the writer exposes all the aspects of American society that reflects how the ghetto mentality flourishes. She sites the entertainment industry, Madison Avenue, professional sports, as well as the everyday instances wherein that which we once thought was only a part of the inner city has become commonplace.

As entertaining as the book is, she hits hard when she challenges readers to consider her words and take action in order to stop or, at least, slow down the spread of "ghettoism" in this nation.

This is a definite "must read" for all Americans that want to understand what's going, not just with the young people, but among us all as we fall further and further into the rationale of the street.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, someone who articulates the problem!.......2007-08-21

Suffering for sometime from the notion that the end is nigh for American civilization, being assaulted daily by the sights, sounds and stories of angry babbymammas and the gangstas who did 'em wrong, mysogynistic rap, the objectification of the female figure everywhere; girls as young as ten wearing t-shirts that read "If you surf I'm available" and crusted with bling, picking visible thongs out of their exposed cracks; young folk with the crazed look of meth/crack/coke in their eyes; fearless pedophiles defiant both about their sickness and civil rights; celebrities crashing and burning; and wondering who and where were the new role models, and where were our real poets and music makers -- and please don't tell me its Fall Out Boy, The White Stripes, or Pussy Cat Dolls or Beyonce or Timblaland or Timberlake-- I wearily picked this book up at my local library and began to read, and continued, and couldn't stop. In fact, I read Ghettonation in two readings, stopping only to pick up my kids from school and make a (rather ghetto) meal of hotdogs and canned beans. I had to rush back to this book.

I've been wrestling with American notions of class, race, identity, the decline of Western civilization, economic disparities, greed and respect, what constitutes illegal immigrants, education, environmental devastation, pitbulls, drugs, babymammas, and rap and hip hop music for a decade and more. I see how lowering the bar, for all of us, has resulted in a free fall for relationships, in parenting, manners, basic common sense, civility, charity, and even basic human discourse. In Ghettonation, Ms. Daniels finally articulated my inchoate thoughts and theories.

When Gwenyth Paltrow called her baby Apple that was a ghetto move. What a concept! This patrician looking, some would say Aryan, blonde with blue eyes doing something other than the classy she generally projects, but it's an absolute spot-on observation. An ah-hah moment, and this book has no shortage of other such examples to remind us all that ghetto isn't a class thing, it's not a race thing, it's simply about not being the best of what we can and should be.

The section on ghetto literature is terrifying. Proceed with caution. I had no idea these books were B. available and B. popular. I also had no idea that high profile music industry figures, such as Snoop Dogg (and more recently Dave Navarro) were getting involved in porn and doing well with it. Yes, we've come a long way from Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and MoTown. Yes, we are much more morally bankrupt than we used to be, even compared to the anything goes 70s days of decadence.

This is an important book, it's a wake up call to all who care about the world and our human family, that we need to be smart, we need to be kinder, we need to take care of our children, our business, our schools, and our world. It's the only one we have.

Thanks, Ms. Daniels, for this eye opening and cogent analysis of the most urgent problem facing America today. You managed to walk the fine line without resorting to snobbery, elitism, and also without giving an inch.

Ghettonation is essential reading.

2 out of 5 stars Long on Examples, Short on Analysis.......2007-07-26

This book offers a blend of opinion, autobiography, and ethnography to ask why "ghetto" (and its adjectival uses, as in "That's sooo ghetto") has become an accepted "mind-set" in this country. Daniels does well to catalog the many ways in which ghetto culture is organized by "low expectations" and fosters carelessness, irresponsibility, and general unpleasantness. Her examples can be illuminating, including the website Gizoogle.com, which translates any webpage into "ghettospeak."

The problem with this book is its complete lack of organization and argumentative structure. I second one reviewer's claim that Daniels tends to substitute her own rambling musings for critical social analysis. Her back-and-forth rhetoric about "I'm ghetto, I'm not ghetto" typifies this problem: Daniels seems to think her examples are so self-evident that we should already know WHY she supposedly "is" or "isn't" ghetto. This sleight of hand is inexcusable for a book that means to delineate the properties of the "ghetto mind-set." We expect explanation here, not self-indulgent "you know it when you see it" joking.

The book also suffers from having an overly expansive definition of the ghetto mind-set. Daniels's examples are so wide-ranging and far-fetched (even referencing the heir to the throne of Monaco's philandering) that she loses sight of the specific (social, cultural, historical) reasons why "ghetto" has become fashionable among American youth. At times it seems Daniels interprets ghetto as signifying anything (or anyone) that thrives off "low expectations." Such an abstract definition means very little when applied to concrete examples.

In the end, I wanted more critical focus in this book. (A little less authorly self-indulgence would have helped.) The examples are sometimes illuminating, as I noted, but Daniels's basic theme is tackled more pointedly in black sociological criticism and black cultural studies.

As a fan of Bound Hearts I admit I've been waiting for the next installment of the series. And as the same with 4 and 5, I found myself utterly disappointed. The delivery just isn't there. All in all, the characters are prosaic, the sex is sleazy, and something in the plot is horribly amiss. This is, quite possibly, the most horrible series ever put to pen, and I'm almost 100% certain the other reviews are from herself. ;)

I'm convinced that Lora Leigh is to the book industry as Michael Jackson is to little boys. She just lost a fan, forever.

Now he fills in those rich tidbits, letting us witness the parts of the stories that remained offthe air. Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars John Burnet is a gifted writer.......2007-03-31

I couldn't put John Burnett's book down. It gives you a behind the scenes, human look at recent events like Katrina, Iraq, Guatemala. His writing is smooth as silk.

3 out of 5 stars Intermittently Interesting.......2007-02-19

This book by veteran NPR reporter Burnett is divided into three sections which really boils down to two: seven places you wouldn't want to be and four human interest stories. The seven places are: immediate post-Katrina New Orleans, heading into Iraq for Gulf War II, the early '90s Branch Davidian standoff outside Waco, Guatemala's 1983 coup, post-ethnic cleansing Kosovo, immediate post 9/11 Peshawar (Pakistan), and immediate post-Taliban Afghanistan. To be sure, anyone who's likely to buy a book like this probably pays attention to the news, and is probably reasonably well informed about these various events (Guatemala being the most obscure). However, Burnett is less interested in retelling the specific details of each of these incidents than he is in reflecting upon them, especially how the media (himself included) reported on them.

Certainly, the opening piece, on the aftermath of Katrina is chock full of the sights and smells of the wreckage, but it's his personal reactions that make it worth reading. the Iraq piece is rather less effective, as he lukewarmly admits the inherent problems of being embedded. The Waco "incident" is particularly worth of reexamination, and Burnett's exploration of the semantics of the story are a nice basic case study in the pitfalls of journalism. The Guatemala chapter is very good, as Burnett weaves the story of his unlikely presence as a stringer (with his wife) with the sorry tale of Guatemala's brutal counterinsurgency campaign (which killed more people than the vastly better known cases of Nicaragua and El Salvador combined). The chapters on Kosovo, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are briefer and much more pedestrian pieces about life as a foreign correspondent. While definitely of interest to those fascinated by the mechanics of how foreign news is gathered and reported on the ground, these chapters aren't as compelling. While they are commendable for shining the spotlight on support staff like translators and facilitators, readers looking for a really interesting version of similar material should seek out Joe Sacco's "The Fixer."

The four human interest stories that round out the book are perfectly serviceable examples of the genre, but not essential reading. The first covers a Texas death row chaplain, both during his duties, and then ten years after his retirement. It touches on the usual death penalty debate topics, but doesn't offer anything particularly new. "The Bull Killer" is about a legendary Mexican bullfighter, and, quite frankly, the piece is highly romanticized and the one part of the book where Burnett utterly loses his way (he says up front that he's always been fascinated by bullfighting). One doesn't have to be an animal rights supporter to see through the hypocrisy of those who wax poetic about the the wonderful character and spirit of a bull, and then turn around and ritually kill it for the entertainment of others. Next is a fairly forgettable piece about a Honduran pioneer in small-scale sustainable agriculture. Rounding things out is a piece about how a chance encounter with a an elderly street musician in Mexico City led to Burnett's trying to get him royalties for a recording of him.

In the end, the individual events and people covered are no more or less interesting than any good newspaper or magazine story. Where the book gets interesting is in those episodes where Burnett is rethinking how he acted in the role of reporter and how a story was framed. So read it for these occasional moments of insight into the profession.

5 out of 5 stars Consistently engaging.......2007-02-01

A consistently engaging set of accounts of major recent newsworthy events from the author's perspective. It's interesting to see the story behind the news headlines from such places as post-Katrina New Orleans, Waco, and post 9/11 Pakistan and Afghanistan, each told with wit and intelligence.

His account of Guatemala during the 1980s is a highlight. A great blending of the facts around what the government sponsored terrorism and the personal impact it had on people there, including eventually himself.

The stories on some of the "heroes" in the second half of the book seem a bit flat. And there's a question of how journalism maintains it's humanity in the midst of so much human horror which gets asked but not satisfyingly answered. But those are small nits for an otherwise great book.

4 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-01-20

A riveting first hand account of this NPR correspondent's experiences/observations at such events as Waco, Katrina, Kosovo,Iraq, Afghanistan, and more. Having heard John Burnett speak in person I was eager to read his accounts. I was not disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Stories You Never Heard Behind The Stories You Heard.......2007-01-09

His voice is as familiar as his name but there are only so many words you can put on the air in regular broadcast. These stories tell how he got the stories you heard. Part of John's challenge is simply blending in. A reporter tries hard to be invisible, to not become a part of the story, to fit into the story environment and simply report what he sees. At 6'7", that's a tall order. Invisibility is especially important when they locals are shooting as outsiders and many of John's stories had that danger.

Well-told, these stories need to be heard.

    Book Description

“There are three rules for running a business; fortunately, we don’t know any of them.”

In 1978, Paul Newman and A. E. Hotchner decided that rather than just distribute Paul’s own salad dressing at Christmas to neighbors, they would offer it to a few local stores. Freewheeling, irreverent entrepreneurs, they conceived of their venture as a great way to poke fun at the mundane method of traditional marketing. Much to their surprise, the dressing was enthusiastically received. What had started as a lark quickly escalated into a full-fledged business, the first company to place all-natural foods in supermarkets. From salad dressing to spaghetti sauce, to popcorn and lemonade, Newman’s Own became a major player in the food business. The company’s profits were originally donated to medical research, education, and the environment, and eventually went to the creation of the eight Hole in the Wall Gang camps for children with serious illnesses.

In these pages Newman and Hotchner recount the picaresque saga of their own nonmanagement adventure. In alternating voices, playing off one another in classic “Odd Couple” style, they describe how they systematically disregarded the advice of experts and relied instead on instinct, imagination, and mostly luck. They write about how they hurdled obstacle after obstacle, share their hilarious misadventures, and reveal their offbeat solutions to conventional problems. Even their approach to charity is decidedly different: every year they give away all the company’s profits, empty the coffers, and start over again. The results of this amazing generosity are brought to life in heartwarming stories about the children at their camps.

With rare glimpses into their zany style and their compassion for those less fortunate, Newman and Hotchner have written the perfect nonmanagement book, at once playful, informative, and inspirational.

4 out of 5 stars First Half is EXCELLENT!!!!.......2007-07-14

The first half of this book is excellent!! The authors may not have intended it, but the first half offers great business advice as it details the amazing story of how Paul Newman was able to get his homemade salad dressing bottled and sold in stores. It's also very funny. Just an amazing story of taking risks, not accepting "no" for an answer and following your vision. The only reason I didn't give this little book five stars is because the second half loses steam. The first half offers all the details of how Newman and Hotchner worked to sell their idea, but once the book shifts to pasta sause and the charity works, it's more an overview but they are not as involved. It's great that they helped that many charities and established the great summer camps for children, but those stories are told factually and not with the humor and insights of the creation of the salad dressing. It's still a very good book and I learned a lot from it. I will also be glad to buy his products because they taste good and they help a lot of people.

    5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurship 101.......2005-03-31

Everything I ever needed to know about successful entrepreneurship I learned from SHAMELESS EXPLOITATION. 1) It begins with a creative product, not in the search for a way to make money (sorry, Mr. Sinatra). 2) It begins with a product that fills a hole in a market (in this case, salad dressing made with fresh ingredients, no additives, conspicuously absent from mainstream grocery store shelves back in 1980). 3) Time-honored production and marketing methods can also be time-ragged and not right for your product. 4) Ask questions of everyone you know. 5) Put out a little venture capital and don't overreach (these guys put out $40,000 and lived within those means). 6) Don't compromise the integrity of your product, find ways to accommodate it. 7) There are other ways to publicize the product other than expensive advertising. 8) A movie star's name means nothing; it's all in the product and the hard work that goes into it (sorry, Frank). 9) You have to love and believe in your product. 10) You have to love the process of getting the product out there. 11) If you build it, they will come.

Everything I ever needed to know about pursuing the common good I learned from SHAMELESS EXPLOITATION: 1) Just do it. 2) Invite everyone to participate. 3) Miracles can happen.

Everything you ever needed to know about this book: 1) It's a fast read. 2) It's an honest read. 3) It's an insightful read. 4) It's an inspiring read. 5) The part about the charities served by Newman's own will blow your socks off. 6) The authors are highly entertaining tour guides of their adventure. 7) There are a few recipes to boot. 8) It is refreshingly free of those simplistic aphorisms that plague most business world books.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful & Inspiring--and not your average business book. .......2005-03-28

This book is a fun light read, about a foray into business by the seat of their pants. This is certainly a sucess story that flies in the face of Strategic Planning.

Newman and Hotchner had great and expensive advise from the traditional gurus of business, and for their own reasons they went the exact opposite way, and it came through in spades.

This is realy refreshing in the business world, a smalltime producer of an innovative and all natural product subverting the traditional modes of business. Years before words like "all natural" and "organic" were in regular use at grocery stores, Paul Newman, of all people, was sneaking in under the radar and getting shelfspace and loyal customers.

Not only is their product good & fun, but in another 'accidental twist' they give one hundred percent of their profits ot charities. 100%! This fact alone was enough to make me read the book, and so many redeeming qualities made it hard to put down.

The book is light and not layden with industry jargon, has a bunch of entertaining anecdotes, cartoon strips, personal letters from customers and children, and a visually pleasing layout. The two are never self congratulatory, in fact they are more apt to poke fun of themselves and be modest..a pleasant aftertaste.

The second half of the book centers around the Hole in the Wall Gang Camps the pair set up for seriously ill children. These camps not only made a huge difference in the life of these campers but set off a series of these camps around the world.

The distance of our reach is far beyond what we ever dreamed.

This book will not disappoint, is fun, and a refreshing tale of business and life on your own terms.

4 out of 5 stars A day to read and worth your time.......2004-07-12

'Shameless Exploitation' is actually two books in one - you get the tale of how the 'Newman's Own' started as a germ of an idea in Paul Newman's garage. Newman was legendary back then for commandeering the kitchen of restaurants he would frequent and whipping together his own salad dressings. He and co-founder Hotchner make light of their lack of business knowledge, but it's worth noting that much of their success is based on their innate sense of what is right, for example their unwillingness to compromise on the freshness of their product.

The latter third of the book details the duo's efforts in starting up the 'Hole in the Wall Gang' camps for sick children. The authors are passionate about this endeavour, as well they should be. It's outstanding work they're doing. Newman personally drives these projects, sometimes through the force and magnetism of his personality.

In fact, that's the thing that stands out in the book - this is no 'slap the celebrity name on the bottle' exercise. These two gentlemen are intimately involved in all aspects of the business. There's a comparison in the book to other celebrity food bits good bad - Frank Sinatra's tomato sauce venture is one example. It ran aground in less then two years, an unmitigated disaster. The difference? Sinatra simply loaned out his name and looked to scoop up the profits. By contrast, Newman and Hotchner are in this thing heart and soul. Plus, the product is superlative. That's the only way to get repeat buyers.

As of the book's printing, Newman's Own has donated over $137 million to charity. When they write Paul Newman's epitaph, that first paragraph is going to be a real stemwinder to capture the essence of the man.

5 out of 5 stars The Paul Newman Story.......2004-06-17

This is the story of Paul Newman, aka the hustler, the sting, butch cassidy, cool hand luke and superman (almost). He is an Oscar winning actor, car racing champion, philanthropist (215 million dollars and still counting), successful businessman and an alien (I heard this recently through a psst..psst network). Read the book. It will expand your horizons. Anything is possible.

    Book Description

A daring darling from the Live Girls series offers a collection of provocative, confessional stories sure to inspire one-handed reading. This isn’t dusty, for-ladies-only fiction, just high-quality erotica that doesn’t require a whips-and-chains appetite for thorough enjoyment of each sensual, sometimes wicked admission. Recalling the sweat and sizzle of an old affair, a woman wonders if her former lover can ever forgive her for having ended up with his wife. A Haitian couple reveals the passion born of desperation and the searing fires of loss and love. A young woman abroad loses her virginity to a sophisticated older man in a scorching-hot life lesson in sexual possibility. Ovulation brings sweet, slippery horniness—and volatile, supercharged impregnation fantasies—to a childless-by-choice bi-chick. And a pregnant bitch goddess recounts the night she took over her husband’s body the same way her growing baby took over her own: relentlessly and with delicious, paradoxical pleasure and pain. The memoir-like style of these stories allows the reader to devour private letters, peek into diaries, and listen to the most intimate confessions of women acting out in inspirational sexual abandon. Seasoned editor Blank has collected only the hottest, most “confidential” and scintillating erotic moments by expert eroticists including Dawn O’Hara, Adhara Law, Lisa Bland, and R. Gay.

    5 out of 5 stars Give it a try!.......2002-07-30

If you just want something quick, cheap, and tawdry, this probably is the wrong book for you. This is much, much better than that. These are visceral, emotional, introspective, and above all literary stories about the range of ways that sex has a part to play in women's lives, encompassing revenge, nostalgia, suffering, romance, and lots of lustiness in the scenarios. I got the feeling that these stories were selected with an eye toward what was erotic in our everyday lives and a range of realistic-feeling experiences, not as escapist fantasy, and I really love that. The book is fiction, but I keep wondering how many of the stories might be a little autobiographical, because some of them ring really true to me.

I picked it up after reading a review in The Seattle Weekly that said: "A Shameless romp is wet and creamy: You will collapse in a sweaty, spent pile afterward." Not every story did that to me, but the ones that did -- wow! And the ones that didn't were still worth reading just as stories. I read a lot of erotica and honestly, there aren't too many collections that I feel are just as worthwhile to read as fiction as they are to read for arousal.

    1 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2002-07-23

A bit dull, and not very "shameless." Not as good as the usual Herotica type women's books, and really nothing that stands out.

I expected this book to have more meat. In truth, it is just a bunch of 'successful' people tooting their own horns. In some ways, I guess that is the point of the book. But, the overall quality of the 'stories' and suggestions is poor. It is just another book on self-promotion and not a very good one at that. Save your money for something else.

3 out of 5 stars What about shame?.......2007-08-30

In this book, I found myself just reading and not really being into the story. To me, the book was lack luster. Maybe if we would have found out that she had HIV at the end of the book instead of the beginning it may have been better. But since we already knew she had HIV, I thought the blast from the past was useless since we never found out who gave her the virus. Jasmyn was reckless and it took her a long time to find the love she needed, but by then it was too late. The ending was okay, but overall the story had no real spark.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of us used to be Jasmyn..........2006-11-08

Jasmyn is a young girl looking for love in ALL the wrong places. From high school to college, Jas uses her body to get what she wants and feel the love she missed out on when her father was killed, as her mother fights to keep her sanity and as her brother does his time.

Many of us women have had some Jasmyn in us at one time or another. Hopefully, our end result is better than Jasmyn's!

This book starts out a bit slow, but when it gets moving, it moves. I recommend mothers, aunts, sisters, fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins share this book with a teen and/or young adult female AND male in their lives...don't just pass it to them, but guide them through this book. This really was a good read.

5 out of 5 stars AN EYE OPENER.......2006-05-26

I believe women of all ages can learn a thing or two from Ms. Jasmyn; a young lady who likes to sleep with men for attention, but suffers the consequences once reality sets in. AIDS is very real and active in the black community!

I believe each parent that has a child going into college should hand this book to them; I'm sure it'll make them more aware of what's going on.

    Enjoy!

    4 out of 5 stars Shamless.......2006-02-06

Written in the voices of the two main characters Jasmyn and Kyle, the story follows them through their years at Marshall State University.
Jasmyn is the resident ho who uses her body to create drama with every man she meets.
Kyle is smart and sexy trying to better himself by achieving his goal in college, but when he feasts his eyes upon sexy Jasmyn all logical thinking goes out the door. As they say opposites attract and there's plenty of drama when these two hook up and Kyle is drawn into Jasmyn's sexual web.
Upon leaving college the two go their separate ways, but still crave for each other.
Jasmyn's promiscuous ways catches up with her in the form of HIV. Shocked and faced with the daunting task of naming all her sexual partners within the last ten years, Jasmyn has to come to terms with the fact that her "Shameless" actions may lead to her demise.
Just as Kyle's life is coming together he gets a call telling him his name is on the list and that he should get tested.
Not a bad shot for Vonetta G. Pierce's first round in the literary arena. "Shamless" is an excellent title for this eye opening novel.
