Gerald the giraffe doesn't really have delusions of grandeur. He just wants to dance. But his knees are crooked and his legs are thin, and all the other animals mock him when he approaches the dance floor at the annual Jungle Dance. "Hey, look at clumsy Gerald," they sneer. "Oh, Gerald, you're so weird." Poor Gerald slinks away as the chimps cha-cha, rhinos rock 'n' roll, and warthogs waltz. But an encouraging word from an unlikely source shows this glum giraffe that those who are different "just need a different song," and soon he is prancing and sashaying and boogying to moon music (with a cricket accompanist). In the vein of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Gerald's fickle "friends" quickly decide he's worthy of their attention again.

With this rhyming, poignant (in a cartoonish way) tale, Giles Andreae, author of Rumble in the Jungle, and numerous other picture books, shows insecure young readers that everyone can be wonderful, even those that march to the beat of a different cricket. The rhymes are somewhat awkward, but the bold, bright watercolors by Guy Parker-Rees will invite readers to kick up their heels and find their own internal harmony. (Ages 3 to 6) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Gerald is a giraffe who simply can¹t dance. Try as he may, his long, spindly legs buckle whenever he starts to boogie. Every year he dreads going to the Great jungle Dance, until one night he finds his own special music.

5 out of 5 stars Dance like no one is watching!.......2007-07-01

The artwork in this one just pops off the page! The story is precious and it catches a lovely rhyme! Tango, Salsa and ChaCha are all within your reach as you cheer for this awkward giraffe to bust a move! A great read aloud!

5 out of 5 stars Great story and art work.......2007-04-10

This is a great must have book for your child's library! It is good for ages 0-6 years at least! I checked this book out from the library and just had to buy a copy for home! Great for gift giving also!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book.......2007-02-05

This book is such an enjoyment for myself as well as my two year old. I love the illustrations, which is what caught my attention at the store and led to the purchase. However when I came home and read it to my daughter I also fell in love with the story. This is a definate must have in your library, and I think Giles Andreae's best book.

5 out of 5 stars Charming with a great moral.......2007-02-01

This is such a delightful book. I love the whimsical illustrations, charming rhymes, and the moral of the story- "We all can dance if we find music that we love". Gerald the Giraffe (who doesn't seem to be able to dance) ends up finding his own unique rythm. This is one of the few books that I never tire of reading (oh, and my 3 year old son likes it too!)

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book , great story!.......2007-01-10

I bought this book for my 18 month old son and I love it. The pictures are beautiful and it is a great story with a nice message. The story is a little long for his attention span right now but he loves looking at the pictures. It is one of our favorites!

With an eye-catching holographic foil cover, this is the third in a series of four books.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent series of books by Tedd Arnold.......2007-04-17

All the Fly Guy books have become extremely popular during bedtime reading in our house. Both my 5 and 6 year old love them. They are all very funny. I would recommend you buy all three books and read them in order. The first book introduces the two characters (Fly Guy and Buzz) and explains how they became friends.
They were our favorite books until we bought The Perfect Nest by Catherine Friend, which is our current favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Shoo, Fly Guy!.......2007-03-27

It has been a constant struggle getting my 6 year old to read. She says the books at her reading level are boring. She picked up this book and now she reads it all of the time. It is the only book she enjoys reading by herself.

5 out of 5 stars Accidental discovery........2007-02-14

Shoo Fly guy is a cute little story about a boy and his pet fly. The boy goes on a picnic and the fly tries to find him.

My daughter liked following his fly patterns and the stuff he visits.

I was a little concerned about one incident where he goes by a road kill frog. But she is fascinated by death for some reason(we lost a cat) so it didn't bother her.

On thing she did like is where the author describes the last effort and draws a random fly pattern that involves saying "and on" 30 times.

Overall a fun read!

5 out of 5 stars Great for below-grade-level readers.......2007-01-21

The Fly Guy books have been great for my daughter. She is mildly autistic, so her reading level is around kindergarten even though she is in third grade. She often feels that the books at her level are babyish or boring. Fly Guy is funny and disgusting and very appealing to her. She also likes the idea of reading a real "chapter book". This book especially makes good use of repeating somewhat difficult words in the same phrases, so she can read faster as the book goes on. Thanks Tedd Arnold, and please write many more!

5 out of 5 stars Trouble emerges - and he finds not everyone likes a fly........2007-01-06

Tedd Arnold's SHOO, FLY GUY! tells of hungry Fly Guy, whose owner Buzz always takes good care of him. When Fly Guy decides to explore the greater world, trouble emerges - and he finds not everyone likes a fly.

5 out of 5 stars Pinkie Gladys Gutsman?.......2007-01-22

Pinkie Gladys Gutsman?

That's what Junie B. wants for a new name. Here are the reasons, Pinkie is the beautifulest colour Junie B.'s ever heard of and Gladys Gutsman is the snack lady at school so who wouldn't want to be named after her that what I{Junie B.} would like to know. One day Junie B. goes to the beauty shop with her dad. And she was the lady's helper. So Junie B. thinks what's the bestest job in the world? A beauty shop guy of course! Read this story to find out how Junie B. finds out about years and years of practice. Read it.....AND I MEAN IT!

1 out of 5 stars Bad and Badder.......2006-08-06

Okay, I'll start with the good points.

1. good for little kids who know a lot of weird humor

2. sort of funny, even when you look back on it

3. nice, if you have a small kid, buy it.

now, the bad parts.

1. Junie B. Jones is retarded.

2. bad grammar

3. story is usually very boring unless you're small

Some people may think it's stupid, but this is a book for kids who have just learned to read chapter books. I DO NOT recommend it for kids over 7, but children under 7 will learn a lot from it. (including how not to cut their hair)

5 out of 5 stars Junie B Jones has trouble being a beauty shop person.......2006-03-24

I read this book and I thought I'll never do that ever. But, other wise the book was funny, cute and had lots of advice. Here is some advice if you are older than thirteen. You can cut your own hair. I gave this book five stars because, it's like the book of the year! Junie B. Jones thinks with her springs in her hair that she is going to be like a total doofuss. But, the lady at the beaty shop helps her with her springs. She gets a whole new look! I love the book! IT'S THE BEST BOOK I HAD EVER READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars What a hard book for someone learning to read incorrect grammer and spelling?.......2006-01-06

The student I am working with was having a lot of trouble with the grammer and spelling in this book. I asked the teacher if it was a good book for someone having trouble reading. Her answer was about this book even though I did not tell which Author or book it was. "Is she reading Junie B. Jones Book? I know that these books have a lot of incorrect grammar. I thought I took those books off the shelves becasue other mentors commented about the problem with the grammar. If she can not see the difference between the correct and incorrect grammar then she should not read the book. Thanks for your concern. I also got your other email about the "runned" problem. I will make a note of it." If the child read well and gets that it is a joke. These books maybe fine but not for a school age child trying to learn to read!

5 out of 5 stars A Very Hilarious Book.......2004-12-20

This book was hilarious to me because I could tell that she was a kindergardener. Her language was funny so it got my interest. I think Junie B Jones book's are very, very good for kids! I can't wait to read all her others.

Book Description

Where can you find a Deinosuchus that practically pirouettes on its tail and a T-Rex that bounds gracefully through the air? Between the pages of Tony Mitton's Dinosaurumpus, where dinosaurs run, boom, shake, and shudder their way to the "sludgy old swamp" and rock the night away. Mitton's delightful rhyme and Parker-Rees's whimsical illustrations will make children want to join in the dance while they learn about some of their favorite prehistoric pals. By the time the romp is over, and the dinosaurs are fast asleep, kids won't be able to shake that jumping, thumping Dinosaurumpus beat!

My 3 year old son absolutely loves this book and had most of it memorized before we even bought it on Amazon. We borrowed it from the library and after reading it a million times before it was due back, I decided to purchase it. The rhymes never get old and they're so fun to read. I'll be buying this one for gifts!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Children's Book.......2006-03-22

I have a 3 year old and 5 year old boys and they just love this book. It has a rhythm to it that makes you want to sing the book. My 2 1/2 year old niece loves the book as much as my boys do. The only thing I found difficult with the book is it uses the actual dinosaur names, many of which I don't know how to say properly. However, I say something close and keep the book moving. Kids get right into the book. My 5 year old has almost memorized the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who has young kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for early readers and others as well.......2007-05-18

Used this book with groups of struggling readers. It was motivating and they wanted to read the sequels. They are very fond of Fly Guy now, and they are very excited about the next book. They want to write a letter to Tedd Arnold and ask him to write more Fly Guy books.

5 out of 5 stars Too much fun!.......2007-03-13

My three year old daughter has an odd bug phobia and this book is the best! The graphics and story are so funny that I actually don't mind reading it over and over. I get as much of a kick out of it as she does. Of the 100+ books we have for our kids this is my reigning favorite!

5 out of 5 stars Carefully written to be easy for early readers.......2006-11-22

This is officialy my six year old daughter's breakthrough book - the first book she picked up on her own and read by herself. The fun story and pictures pulled her in, the carefully crafted text kept her from getting stuck and giving up.

We've since ordered every Ted Arnold book we can get our hands on and she has built up enough confidence now that she can get though harder books.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific.......2006-07-14

"Flies can't be pets! Flies are Pests!" is what Buzz thinks while he is searching for a new pet to enter the pet contest. Then, THIS fly says the boy's name, Buzz. Buzz is delighted and names him Fly Guy. When his parents hear Fly Guy call their son's name they also understand just how smart the fly really is. Now, Can Buzz and Fly Guy convince the judges at the pet show?

What a terrific early reader this book is. It is a Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book and deservedly so. Ted Arnold's comic illustrations punctuate the story and provide plenty of laughs. I was chuckling at every page. An emerging reader will find the large font very easy to read. The book even has chapters. I think guys will especially crack up at this fly comedy.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Easy Reader "Chapter" Book.......2006-06-22

It is SOOO difficult to find amusing and interesting easy reader books. I stumbled upon this book (and the sequel, "Super Fly Guy") when looking for books for a student I am tutoring. It is probably a primer to 1st grade level text, but it has "chapters" which makes it seem a bit "older" to the student, thus building their confidence level. In addition, it has FABULOUS illustrations and children think the story is hilarious. I rarely buy hardback easy readers, but this one was worth the extra investment. I can hardly wait until the next book in the series comes out in September 2006!

5 out of 5 stars superb early reader.......2007-02-09

"Super Fly Guy" is a great early reader book. It's fun and silly while still remaining a reasonable read for about a level 3 reader. I also love "Hi Fly Guy" and "Shoo Fly Guy". I only wish I could find more books of this quality at this level.

Book Description

What is a typical guy moment, anyhow? Daniel Pinkwater remembers the disappointment of meeting his Lone Star Ranger hero up close and personal. Gordon Korman relishes the goofy ultra violence of the old Looney Tunes cartoons. Stephen King realizes that having your two hundred- pound babysitter fart on your five-year-old head prepares you for any literary criticism. And that's just a sampling from Guys Write for Guys Read, a fast-paced, high energy collection of short works: stories, essays, columns, cartoons, anecdotes, and artwork by today's most popular writers and illustrators. Guys Write will feature work from Brian Jacques, Jerry Spinelli, Chris Crutcher, Mo Willems, Chris Van Allsburg, Matt Groening, Neil Gaiman, the editors and columnists from Sports Illustrated, The Onion and Esquire magazines, and more. Selected by voters at the Guys Read Web site and compiled by Jon Scieszka, this wide-ranging collection of authors and illustrators shows that guys do read . . . and will read more if given things they enjoy reading.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Something for the "hate books" guy.......2007-08-09

My 7th grader, who won't read anything except skateboard, videogame and dirt bike magazines [and to be honest "read" is stretching it--mostly looks at the cool photo] absolutely LOVED this! It's worth it for the Boy Scout story alone!!! Too bad schools can't do guy only classes--this would be perfect for a guys only middle school class!!!!

Title: Guys Write for GUYS READ by Jon Scieszka
ISBN: 0-439-86424-0

What do guys like to read about? This book might just tell you. This is a narrative book, so it tells a story. There is tons of stories from different authors. These stories could be out of anything, either its about the author when he was a kid or other things. Like a kid got a nose bled in the park while ridding his bike. Sports are in their too. Most a made up or they could be the truth. These stories are only one to three pages long. Some you will fine interesting and others you might not. This is a narrative book.

This was a good book to me. I would also recommend this book. Know I don't think a grown man would like this book, maybe a kid or a teenager like me would like this book. A guy would like this book too and a girl. I like the narrative writing in this book cause it could be little silly stories that would be two pages long. Now not every story was a A plus, but their were a lot of good ones. I probably didn't like them cause either I dint relate to the character, didn't get it, or cause I did not like what it was about. I think the type of people that would like to read this story would be a kid or a teenager. Also someone that would want a laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for boys of all ages.......2007-01-05

This is a wonderful book to give to your adolescent sons and older males in your life. I purchased it for myself (a woman) to get in touch with what the males are thinking. As an educator, it was beneficial to my male students. They enjoy reading some of their favorite authors passages about life as a male or growing up. (authors like Dave Pilkey, Gordon Korman, Steven King) It is a great idea for a book that encourages more boys and men to read.

4 out of 5 stars Guys Write for Guys Read.......2006-11-14

"Guys Write for Guys Read" is a collection of very short stories written for the male public. There are several great pieces on the nature of being a boy; from sports and necessities, to the danger of reading. If you're looking for a book in which you can see humor in the often difficult life as a guy, this is that book. Have you ever found childhood drawings and wondered on the meaning? Have you done something dumb, and not been able to descide if it's eating you up, or if you don't really care about it? With a burst of testosterone you guys can relate with your favorite male authors, explore your instincts, and look danger in the eye, while cautiously not looking too close. This book (edited by Jon Sciezka) of male literature will delight guys of any age!!!

Book Description

Guy is convinced that the man and woman with whom he has lived all his life cannot possibly be what they claim to be--his parents. They're too weird! Would anyone else's mother tie-dye every pair of underwear in the house? Would anyone else's father perform the famous oyster trick by sucking an oyster up his nose with a horrible noise and spitting it out of his mouth--in a restaurant? No--except maybe the parents of the weirdest, craziest, most unappealing kid in Guy's whole class, Bob-o. But Bob-o's parents are as normal as parents come--just like Guy. This gives Guy food for thought, especially when he finds out that he and Bob-o have the same birthday, and were born in the same hospital! Guy and his best friend Buzz are determined to find out the truth about what really took place the day Guy and Bob-o were born. Readers will delight in Weeks's humorous yet sensitive handling of this classic adolescent phase--the search for identity.

Hi! all,

I grew up with Enid Blyton and it's nice to see her again with my 5 year-old. These stories are a riot and my daughter absolutely loves them. They are also great reads for kids who are just beyond the picture book stage and are looking for big-kid "chapter" books. The book has the look of a chapter book with short stories.

A lot of fun and how much story in 3 pages each!

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Enid Blyton Lives up to his Billing.......2000-04-13

I read almost all of Blyton's books when I was a child. I amnow a father to a 5-year-old and I was very happy to see the same rushof excitement in my son when I read him this book. The stories contained fully prickle the interest of a 5 year old and Blyton's 30 year writing experience is clearly evident in this book. Make your 5 year old happy buy this book!

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Space Book Ever!.......2006-04-09

I first read Guys From Space to my kids in the mid-1980s, and it became an instant favorite. I can't tell you how many laughs we've shared over the years because of Guys From Space. To this day, my daughter and I quote from it, whether it be about the plastic fish, the root beer floats or the dog's dish the little boy wore as a space helmet. I now have a granddaughter who would love this book, and yet when I tried to find it through my local bookstore, I was dismayed to learn that it had gone out of print. Classics like Guys From Space should never be allowed to go out of print!

5 out of 5 stars One of our all-time favorites.......2003-09-23

Our children are 10 and almost 4. We started reading this book to our older child when he was about 3, and we're still reading it as a regular bedtime story to our children. None of us tires of it. We have probably over a hundred children's books in our home, and this one rises to the top. When I noticed that this book was out of print, I decided to write the review hoping that it may help to influence someone to re-print it. Thank you, Daniel Pinkwater.

5 out of 5 stars Read This to your Kids When their Other Books Bore You!.......2000-08-23

A perfect bedtime story. Clever, humourous, rhythmically pleasing, the right length, and truly fun to read aloud. My 4-year-old is never disappointed when we read this one, and even the 8-year-old and the 11-year-old wander in to listen. I commune with the author's sense of humour -- though I must confess I found his interview on this website pretty vapid. The book, however, is a classic and I'd buy a hardcover copy anytime.

5 out of 5 stars A fine read aloud adventure.......1999-05-04

An adventure story told with a drool sense of humor. Understated and fun to read aloud. A sense of normalcy and absurdity underlies a boy's space journey.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1998-10-09

This is a wonderful book. I can't tell you how many times our son has begged us to read it. Of course he doesn't have to beg long because we thouroughly enjoy this book as well. We have checked it out from the library almost every week for months now and hope it will be back in print soon! When it does, I am buying one for everyone I know!
