Book Description
To breed or not to breed? That is the question twenty-eight accomplished writers—including Anne Lamott, Rick Moody, Kathryn Harrison, and Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez—ponder in this collection of provocative, honest, and deeply personal essays. Based on a popular series at Salon.com, Maybe Baby features parents and nonparents alike exploring how and why they decided whether to have children.
This powerful collection offers both frank and nuanced looks at those choices, both alternative and traditional, from a wide range of viewpoints. From abortion to adoption, from ambivalence to baby lust, from single parenting to searching for the right partner to have a baby with, Maybe Baby brings together the full force of opinions about this national—but also intensely personal—debate.

The pro side does not paint a happy picture.......2007-07-05
I bought this book because I'm on the fence and leaning towards no kids. Without friends and family with small children I wanted to read about how children could enrich your lives or things you might get out of having them so I liked the idea of a book that presented several angles on whether to take the plunge. On the whole, I found the pro side of the book very disheartening. Most of the writers seemed to talk about how hard things were, what an ordeal having children was, etc. There was very little joy and happiness represented. A fascinating read but not as balanced as I would have liked.
Still confused.......2007-06-23
This just wasn't the book for me. Maybe it was because it was filled with stories by writers that I couldn't easily relate to (one who decides to become sterilized at 30, one who is bipolar, one who is in jail, one who gets pregnant by a man in jail, etc etc.). I'm not judging these people, but I don't feel like they reflect the norm. I also feel like the authors didn't make a strong case for the category they fell into (yes, no or uncertain). So for me personally, it did not help solve my "maybe baby" dilemma.
On Topic, Candid, Beautifully Written. Makes me wish I had writers as friends..........2007-01-20
Having a child is a huge decision, and yet there is little candid discussion about it in society, so this book is a great contribution. All of the essays are incredibly well written, and very honest. If this is a subject that interests you, you may well read it in one sitting. (I did.)
The book also aims to expore a wide diversity of experiences and feelings on the subject. The gamut includes: 1) a rather shocking essay from a feminist professor who intentionally gets her tubes tied when quite young, seemingly to make a statement; 2) an essay from a Latina woman whose child struggles with a diagnosis of autism, and her subsequent inability to accept the diagnosis; 3) genuinely funny essays, covering everything from the (entertaining) reasons certain people never got around to having kids, to the joys of roadtrips with them.
excellent read!!.......2006-10-30
I totally agree with "gensparkie"'s review. This book is excellently written, conveys tremendous honesty, and shows a huge diversity of thinking on the issue of having kids. Best book on this issue I have ever read.
depressingly enlightening.......2006-09-20
I find this book fascinating for many reasons. My wife and I have just decided to have a baby, and I had read excerpts on salon before the book itself. I found myself agreeing with many of the sentiments expressed. In the decision, I found myself trapped by my own selfishness, and found that mirrored in many of the essays. But I thought: what if my parents had been this selfish? What if all they were concerned about was the mess their kids would turn their house into? The loss of free time? To be honest, I was very concerned that I wasn't "cut out" for parenthood - but reading these essays, I came to grips with my selfishness, and realized there's more to life than me.

will help you decide.......2007-07-11
Maybe Baby is a series of essays from adults on the subject of having a child. The first third of the book is from adults who decided not to have children. The second half is from adults who would like to have children or are undecided, but haven't yet. The third is about adults who did have children. I'm not sure how I felt about the book being grouped in this way because it made it very clear what the theme of the story would be, rather than letting each story tell itself. Other than this fact, I found the book very enjoyable. The stories represent a great deal of diversity, from gay parents, parents of Asperger's Syndrome children, adopting parents, teen parents. Of course, there were many stories from people who were not parents as well, and they also ranged in their diversity. Both men and women wrote essays in this book, which surprised and pleased me. On one hand, I think it is different to be a father than a mother - it is a very different thing to decide to carry a child in your womb than for someone else to do it. On the other hand, I am sure men will be interested in this subject and would appreciate their perspective being included.
If you are ambivalent about having a child, this book will help. Oddly enough, I am still ambivalent but I am now quite sure that I do not want to NOT have children. Now, it is only a matter of deciding WHEN I will have children. If you read this book, you will find sections that resonate with you. Perhaps if you would like to be childless, the first third will really resonate and you will feel confirmed in your convictions. For me, I realized that I did not want to be childless and I hadn't felt the feelings expressed in that section of the book. But I could really understand the fear and uncertainty of the undecided, and definitely some of the parenting stories both scared me and soothed me.
All the stories are written by professional writers. For sure, this changes their perspective on life. Many of them are able to work from home or have flexible work to be with their children more. Unfortunately, this does affect the perspective. If only there was some way to capture the perspective of someone more like me (with a time-consuming business career), but someone like me would probably not have the skill or time to invest in writing essays for Salon.

Not Looking For Mr. Right
Dr. Delaney Poole thinks Harp Cove, Maine, will be the perfect place to settle down and raise her infant daughter -- though she can't say why. Something wonderful happened in this charming, two-spotlight coastal town on a previous summer night, when a sexy stranger stole his way briefly into her heart and then moved on. But now single-mom Delaney has to invent a husband in order to deflect smalltown gossip -- buying masculine clothing that no one will ever wear, framing pictures she's cut from magazine. Her foolproof plan has one small glitch, however: her one-time mystery man is Delaney's new landlord!
Jack Shepard never dreamed he'd see Delaney again -- and he doesn't believe for one minute her cockamamie story about a husband! While he's exploring the leaks in Delaney's bathroom -- and in her alleged "marriage" -- he's trying desperately to get her to admit that they share something special. But when the truth does come out, can Jack and Delaney deal with the passionate consequence?
Customer Reviews:
Kind of stupid..........2007-10-04
This book was entertaining but not very good. Delaney, the leading female character, reacted in such illogical ways and the leading man, Jack, never got mad when he should have. It made it so that I couldn't respect her and he came out looking like a pushover.
cute, engaging!!!!.......2002-06-24
Delaney on a job interview in a small town in Maine, indulges in a one night stand (something she has never done) with the 'Magic Man' and despite precautious she ends up expecting. Suddenly, she regrets they did not bother to observed prelimaries - like exchanging names and telephone numbers.
Even though she is facing being life as new doctor, she quickly adapts and enjoys her role as new mother. 6 months after the baby is born she moves back to the small down in Maine, still expecting to never see the baby's father since she believed he was passing through. Instead, as she quickly discovers since he is her first patient, that he has always lived in the town. Since the 34 year old father of her child is standing there with his 19 year bimbo cheerleader girlfriend, she panics and says she is married. Worse, she discovers he is the landlord of her new residence!
The lie grows and grows until she finds herself buying clothes and creating magazine subscripts in the 'husbands' name, trying to convince Jack that she is married.
It is often a little stretched, and you really wonder if someone would go to these extremes, but Fox's writing makes the whole thing enjoyable!
I Liked It, But..........2001-12-13
I liked the characters, and I liked the fact that Ms. Fox gave voice to both Delaney and Jack, but Delaney's antics to try to hide the fact that Jack was her daughter's father were just a little too ridiculous and heavy-handed. I would have thought that since she had decided early on not to have contact with the child's father, she would have come up with a good cover story to explain her single parenthood. I also would have expected her to keep her facts straight without resorting to writing them down in a list and putting it where it could be found. After all, she knew she was returning to the town where the child was conceived, and someone may have noticed her and Jack together.
The characters were all interesting and amusing, the romance sexy, and the dialogue humorous, but the contrived and somewhat annoying nature of the plot conflict is what makes this book rate only 3 stars, which is a shame because there was a lot of potential here.
More frustrating than funny.......2001-10-16
Firstly, the cover has nothing really to do with the book (not the author's fault), but if you're looking for a hunky labourer type, this is not the book for you.
Next: someone else mentioned making the leap of disbelief, but that was just too much for me. The characters, especially the hero, did things I didn't understand and junped to too many conclusions. I didn't understand why the hero was so desperate to prove the heroine was lying about being married, yet *didn't* ask himself why she was doing it. Probably because he would have come up with the answer pretty quickly. The heroine was too passive for me to really care about what happened to her.
Unfortunately for me as a reader, I didn't find a "vibrant new voice" with this book.
Good hero; good book........2001-08-31
Delaney Poole finds herself pregnant after a one-night stand with gorgeous Jack Shepherd. It happens when she is investigating one possible location for her residency with a man she thinks is on vacation there. She comes back to Harp Cove, Maine, over a year later with baby Emily only to find that Jack is her landlord! She panics, and blurts out to Jack that
she's married, and waiting for her husband to join her. She scrambles to keep her story straight from then on. Delaney is functioning on fear. She doesn't want anything in her daughter's life that could hurt her, and she has heard so much that indicates Jack would be a bad father and a reluctant one.
Jack is stunned that Delaney is Harp Cove's new doctor and is happy to see her again. But he doesn't really believe that she's married. She talks about her husband too much and also has a tendency to forget his name.... He senses Delaney's fear, and wants to soothe her in his arms. But how would he feel if he knew that she fears his involvement in their daughter's life?
Fear leads Delaney to a foolish act that she is forced to
compound with sometimes hilarious results. Jack doesn't deserve the treatment he receives, and he is a great hero. This book will make you laugh, sigh and squirm on your way to a satisfying ending.

Surprising..................2007-03-14
This may be old news to some of you, but new to me! I just finished reading Jamise L. Dames debut novel "Momma's Baby, Daddy's Maybe". 'SURPRISING' is the main word I was use to describe her book.
It was sexy and page turning. She wrote it well and I must say she had a few twist in there that even had me S-T-U-N-N-E-D! I was in awe of how she wrote it and expressed it. She delt with real life, every day type of situations. Her char. were real and exciting. Lots of drama of course, and well put together. I really enjoyed this book from begining to end. I don't want to give away the HUUGGEE surprise in the story, so all i'm gonna say is READ the book!!!!
Thanks Jamise for sharing! Great Work!

This is one of the funniest books I've read in a long time........2007-01-27
Dana Wiley is the owner of a winery in upstate New York that has been in the Wiley family for generations. She's had to close the winery for a season due to "sick" grapes and now needs a loan in order to reopen. She'd left her fiancé, Nick, at the altar six years ago and with sudden clarity she realizes that she'd made a big mistake when she'd fled the church.
Nick Maybe manages Murphy's, a bar in Manhattan and lives in the apartment directly above it. He's been working and living there for the six years since Dana left him at the altar. He's decided it's time to move on, so he's agreed to take a job with Dana's nemesis, Melanie Biggs, and plans to move to California.
Because the winery is closed for the season, Dana works as a secretary at a convalescent center. Dana pretends to be a bride twice a week to boost morale among the Alzheimer's patients. It wasn't until she was saying the "I do's" that she slipped and said Nick's name. She then realized, that it was October fifteenth, exactly six years since she fled the church where she was to have been married to Nick. Already depressed, she returns home to be told that the bank had rejected her request for a loan to reopen the winery. Knowing Melanie's interest in purchasing the winery, Dana chooses to swallow her pride and ask her mom to co-sign for a loan.
Nick is preparing for his last shift at Murphy's. He wants to spend the next five days packing and then get on a plane for California and begin a new life. Babs, Dana's mother, however, had other plans for him. She's gotten him involved in helping her rich friends for "donations" to various charities. This time she has a friend that needs a bird to disappear. He's told to make it look like a robbery. He asked Babs what kind of bird it was he was picking up. All she knew was that it was a Kakapoo and originates from New Zealand.
This is one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. The dialogue among all of the characters is fast paced and hilariously funny. Babs is so outlandish that you can't help but wonder what she's going to do next. Dana and Nick both have regrets over their near wedding, but they are both still very much in love with each other. They are quite possibly the only normal people in the book. The bird fascinates me. I had never heard of a Kakapoo before and the way it's described had me laughing out loud many times. Lani Diane Rich has done a beautiful job of writing a touching love story that I couldn't put down, as well, as bringing the plight of the nearly extinct, Kakapoo to the public's attention. I even visited the Kakapoo website just so I could see what these birds look like.

Great screwball comedy-romance.......2006-04-25
While participating in a mock wedding, Dana utters the words she could not say six years earlier when she left her fianc? Nick at the altar. When she is in dire straights and has to go to her estranged mother Babs for a loan (unbeknownst to her, her mom is broke), she runs into Nick at her mom's apartment. Nick and Babs have remained friends - he does favors for her like stealing jewels or rare birds from owners who want to cash in on insurance.
When he attempts to "steal" a bird from Vivian, he is too late - someone has beaten him to it. Then Vivian discovers that her $25 million inheritance actually goes to the rare flightless parrot indigenous to New Zealand called a Kakapo. Vivian and her husband get desperate and kidnap Babs to insure that Nick will find the bird. He and Dana join forces, while both wrestle with their emerging feelings for each other.
Like a 1940's screwball comedy - zaniness abounds, as everyone wants a piece of that "smelly green chicken" named Mr. Saunders. Chock-filled with great one liners, hysterical situations, and well drawn secondary characters like the inept kidnappers, Finn the reformed bird thief (who gets his own story in the upcoming "Comeback Kiss"), and feisty mom Babs, this is a story that is sure to delight. Rich is quickly become a must read author for me.
Funny, Sassy, and just an all-around good read!.......2006-04-14
Even though I am admittedly a voracious reader I can be rather picky about what I read. A book has to grab me in the first few pages or it's getting tossed into the pile for the next garage sale and I move on to the next one in my TBR (To Be Read) stack. "Maybe Baby" was the first book I read by Lani, a fellow Cherry (how do I describe the Cherries?) and an all-around funny gal. She has a funny, sharp sense of humor and her delivery is fast and cutting-edge. I found myself pulled into this book by the first couple of pages and didn't put it down until I had devoured the last page! The story centers around a chick named Dana, who discovers, rather belatedly, that she made a HUGE mistake when she left the love of her life at the alter six years ago. Her life has gone to hell- in-a-handbasket and she is reduced to playing the bride at a make-believe wedding every week in an old folk's home for "entertainment" so that she can earn the money she needs to put the family vineyard/winery back on it's feet. Her mother is a social butterfly with a devious bent to her, and then there's the ex-finace, Nick, who just happens to show up her mother's penthouse the same day Dana finally gets up the nerve to ask her mother, Babs, for some financial help. All bets are off when Dana discovers that not only has her mother remained good friends with Nick, she apparently also hires him to do "favors" for her and her rich friends "for charity". Everything is just fine until Nick has to steal an incredibly smelly but very rare bird and the people decide that they need it back. The only problem is that a REAL bird thief beats him to it and the people take Babs hostage until he can return the bird. Dana and Nick must figure out who stole the bird, where it is, and how to get it back in time to save Dana's mother and while they are at it maybe they can figure out how they went wrong in the first place and get their relationship back.
This is a fast-paced and witty read. I actually laughed 'til I cried in several parts--Lani is just so damn funny! The book is a riot, especially the character named Finn who is, despite being a bird thief, still a pretty likable sort of guy. The couple who kidnap Babs reminds me of the couple from that Bette Midler movie--"Desperate People" ? --where they kidnap the wife and the husband (Danny DiVito) doesn't care!! They are bumbling and incompetent and just slightly dangerous because of it! All of her characters are wonderfully quirky and slightly bent and they aren't your typical "romance" types. I find this much more appealing than the Fabio/Farrah look-alikes that most romance novelists think we the readers want to see. I want to read about people that are more like me--not perfect, not drop-dead gorgeous--more like a real person! If you are a Crusie fan (Bet Me, Welcome to Temptation, Faking It, etc) you will love Lani Diane Rich. I absolutely give this book a five star rating and I am telling you--BUY.THIS.BOOK!!!
Lani has a new book coming out in May called "THE COMEBACK KISS" that is about Finn, the reformed bird-thief, and his chance to right some old wrongs in his old home-town. One of which is to return the car he took from his girlfriend so he could leave town the day after she lost her virginity to him... Interesting premise, eh? I can hardly wait!
A Fun Read For The Summer!.......2005-06-20
Ms. Rich has penned a fun and quirky read with her effort "Maybe Baby." Although her storyline is not a new one, take one guy who loved the girl but a misunderstanding separates them, than one thing leads to another and whoops...boy and girl are thrown back together again in order to "sort" out the mess. Yes, they than realize why they loved to begin with and voila...one happy ending for everyone. What makes this story different is the characters. Plain and simple they are fun and they manage to pull the reader into the story if it's only to find out just how they will end up with their happy ending.
Nick and Dana have a past and they are both trying very hard to move on from their not so happy ending. Problem with this is that neither of them can for different reasons. Than on the anniversary of what would have been their wedding if things had not gone straight into the garbage...Dana has a break through. Nick Maybe on the other hand wants to just put distance between him and the one woman that he ever loved, Dana. The fact that one person (and no it's not Dana) will not let him do that doesn't make things any easier for him but, he will give it the ol college try. That is until he is asked to do just one more favor for said interferer. The fact that this favor includes swiping a bird from its owner should be just chalked up to another day in the life of Nick. Instead it brings Dana right back into his life. Will theses two hurt but special people a chance to fix what went wrong or will things go from bad to worse?
Nick and Dana were fun characters and their story although not earthshaking was a very pleasant read. Again, this read is nice but it does at times stutter and slow. Thankfully these times are few and far between. The chemistry between Nick and Dana is not readily apparent but if the reader sticks with the book they will be rewarded eventually with a happy ending.

No Maybe About It...........2005-06-06
Lani Diane Rich has written another winner. Once again, her characters are great, her dialog snappy and witty and the book zooms along at light speed. Definitely another finish-it-in-one-sitting type book, which is a rare, rare thing for me these days.
I loved Dana and how she works so hard to avoid having to deal with what needs to be dealt with, but finally realizes a wake up call when it thumps her on the head. And Nick is a great hero, not perfect, but real and caring and always heroic in the ways that really count. The author does a great job of showing how they've never really gotten over each other, and I found myself totally believing in these characters and the issues that kept them apart.
MAYBE BABY is full of great secondary characters, too. Finn, as the good hearted two bit thief, and Dana's mother Babs is a hoot! Delightfully ditzy, but with a deep core of true humanity and understanding that makes her multi-dimensional.
The bird caper is a delightfully quirky plot vehicle for the wake up call that thrusts Nick and Dana back into each other's lives so they're forced to come to terms, but it never overshadows the emotion of the story or the characters.
I can't recommend this book or this author highly enough. Thank God she writes fast!!

Book Description
The Glides of Fort Cloud, Wisconsin, are a spectacularly dysfunctional family. Rusty and Judy did the best they could when raising their three children, but somehow, nothing turned out the way they planned: Henry ran away and joined a rock band; Carson ran away and joined a cult; and Gretchen ran away and joined a 'gender-neutral' movement. The Glide parents have just about resigned themselves to the fact that their kids will never live up to their expectations- when a ray of hope comes in the form of a new baby. Judy's heart soars when Gretchen announces that she and her disturbingly hirsute boyfriend, Ray, are expecting their first child. But it isn't long before Gretchen's unorthodox approach to parenting turns what should be a happy time into a typical Glide family war of wills. Gretchen proposes to raise her child absent any indication of its sex: no pink or blue nursery, no baby dolls or trucks, no-to Judy's horror -traditional boy or girl names. In order to be part of their grandchild's life, Rusty and Judy must first come to terms with their daughter-a realization that prompts them to look at themselves and their entire family with new eyes. Written with daring and humor and with the confidence of a seasoned novelist, Tenaya Darlington's debut is a funny, heartwarming, and insightful novel about the real meaning of family.

don't listen to the others... .......2007-03-31
The writers of the other comments are obviously lacking in taste. This is an excellently written book with sharp images and intriguing characters. The concept is as original as you will get and very well executed. Read the book with an open mind and it will encourage and assist growth in understanding and criticizing society's ideals. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining, light read that inspires thought. Truly an excellent book.
Waste of time.......2006-12-17
Horrible, horrible...horribly pretentious, horribly boring, horribly over-written, horribly preachy...just plain horrible.
The single penny you could spend on a used copy of this piece of excrement is still too much. Perhaps that statement is a little harsh: one cent may be worth the price of admission for the unintentional howlers that fill every single page, but it's still a close call.
Pain and Misery............2006-06-17
...and that's just from suffering through this dud of a book. The best way to sum up this book is "why bother"? Uninspired, dull characters, and no action. This book might make a little heat if you burn it for fuel, otherwise, forget it!
Not biased, this is fine fine work!.......2005-01-31
Yes, she was my creative writing teacher, but for someone who I saw only write poetry for so long, this fiction debut is astounding. What a topic! As a fellow writer, I know for a fact that Tenaya Darlington has some of the best images and ideas floating around in her head. She puts them to excellent use in her fiction debut and proves that she's a jack of all trades (with both poetry "Madame Deluxe" and fiction).

The Jacobs's siblings have done a good job of masking their secrets behind finely wrought facades, hidden agendas, and questionable paternity...until the day it all starts to unravel. Faced at last with the truth, Kennedy, Simone, and Derrick Jacobs find themselves vulnerable and exposed, determined to salvage the lives they have made for themselves.
Passions run high in this debut novel by Jamise L. Dames, and as the Jacobs try desperately to untangle themselves from a web of deceit, they learn how tragedy can move toward truth, and the strongest of all ties.
Three women. Three men. One truth.
Kennedy Jacobs has it all: beauty, brains, and the confidence to match. She also has the man that sister Simone has officially declared off-limits. With sass, class, and strength to spare, Kennedy takes the world by storm -- until tragedy jumps up and slaps her in the face.
Simone Jacobs wants it all. She has the expensive home, the VP position at a top accounting firm, and a new man who tickles more than her fancy. But something is missing. Just when it seems that this something is within reach and her life is coming together, someone starts to tear it apart at the seams.
Derrick Jacobs is a handsome Wall Street exec, a fully equipped ladies' man who can't be tied down by any woman. With charming good looks, a chiseled body, and a very healthy bank account, Derrick Jacobs can move mountains...but will his secrets cause them to crumble?
A stunning novel of family ties and family lies.

Be Careful What You Ask For!.......2007-04-24
I must admit at first I had a hard time getting into the story. The beginning of the book started off kinda slow (decided to put it down then pick it up again). I'm glad I kept reading on ------halfway through the book the "plot" thickens and piqued my interest. I could relate with the sisters, Simone & Kennedy very well and both of their stories/secrets were totally unpredictable and quite shocking! However, Derrick's secret was somewhat predictable (I'll admit the author did have me turning back pages to see if there were any hints to lead up to it ------>couldn't find any!). Overall, this book definitely deserves 4.5 stars for the twists & turns and the overall theme of the story.
Surprise.......2007-02-11
This was a very good book which offered readers an interesting and fast paced story. The title didn't do justice to the story inside. I read this a while ago and was recommending it to a friend, which prompted me to write a review. The secrets, lies and surprises that pop off in this book will keep you on edge up to the last page. Please don't sleep on this one, just keep in mind that the title does not adequately decribe the story. I only gave the book 4 stars because of the title.
Disappointing.......2006-11-06
This book of accumulated stories started off great but died down with each story. I am sure it could have been better.
Highly Recommended!!!!.......2006-05-26
"Momma's Baby, Daddy's Maybe" by Jamise L. Dames, this was great book to read. It kept me on edge from beginning to the very end. It was unpredictable and filled with lust, deceit, lies and deception. This book was a real page turner; I finished this book in 4 hrs, and then after a month I had to read it again, because I felt close to the characters Kennedy, Derrick, Michael and Simone especially after reading the book for the second time... (Smile)....
I highly recommend getting this book, you will enjoy it...
Slow to start but quick to finish .......2006-01-09
I have mixed feelings about this book. First let me say this much the book is very slow to get the ball moving I didn't get really into the book until the last 40 or 50 pages. Second the title is deceitful its more a black romance then a ghetto drama. Third it was predicatable and unpredicatble. It was painfully obvious that Kaisha wasn't Nigels daughter. But the part about Micheal and Jared was a real shocker. Its a decent book but it moves at a slow pace and sometimes you don't think you'll ever get to the end. Also some things seemed a little over dramatized like the death of you know who.

A waste of money.......2006-06-18
I was really disappointed with this book. The pictures, especially the last one, seem out of focus, the rhyme is rather silly, and the pictures aren't very engaging. If you are looking for a book with baby pictures in it I would suggest Happy Baby Colors by Priddy or What Color? by Anthea Sieveking.
Maybe my baby.......2003-04-10
Beautiful, candid photographs of a multi ethnic baby troop! My daughter would stare at the pictures when she was only a few weeks old and smile. The story that accompanies the photos is sweet and inspiring - good for adults and children of all ages.
-board book style for chubby fingers to turn easily
-good sized pictures for babies to focus on
First Smile.......2002-03-26
I bought this book for my son when he was only a couple of weeks old. I read it to him for the first time when he was about four weeks old. He loved looking at the pictures and even smiled back at the babies. He is now almost five months and he loves it when we read this book.
Reads well, pictures could have more.......2001-11-20
This book is great - the only thing I would change is the pictures. There's not much to talk about except to say, "Baby!" It would be nice if the babies were at least holding a couple items, or wearing colorful clothes you could talk about. Once your baby starts learning to talk, he/she may not find enough here to keep interested.
My daughter loved this even at 7 months!.......2001-03-03
I bought this book when my daughter was 7 months old and she loved it from the start. She is now almost 10 months. The pictures are BIG, and one baby to a page, so it's easy for her to pay attention. And I really think she has a crush on one of them (the cement mixer!). She always laughs when she sees him. I took it with me to the photographer and it's the only thing that got her to smile for them camera. Young babies are drawn to other babies and faces and this book is perfect for them!

Well-rounded and useful.......2006-06-10
In making my own decision about whether to become a parent, I have read many books on the subject. Most are biased, too narrowly focused, or simply devoid of original information.
This one, although over 30 years old, is by far the best: it offers a multi-dimensional look at the drawbacks and rewards of both paths. Of course a book can't make the decision for you, but this one helps provide the tools for decision making, and presents them in a truly neutral voice that is far ahead of its time.
Excellent guide.......2005-03-30
This landmark book introduced the idea that having children ought to be something we think deeply about. It guided me many years ago in making that most fateful decision not to have children. It was Whelan who offered this simple, but invaluable bit of advice: Remember that whichever decision you make--to have children or not--you must always expect moments in the future when you will wonder if you made the right decision. This book should be required reading of anyone of child-bearing age. Child bearing and child rearing should be a matter of choice, not of obligation. Whelan argues and illustrates this idea well.
