Neurotica: Jewish Writers on Sex is a first-rate collection of writings about "the people of the book, in bed," as editor Melvin Jules Bukiet observes in the book's terrifically funny introduction. ("Not only is sex unshunned by the Jewish tradition; it's often considered a positive mitzvah to have sex on Sabbath. Besides, if work is prohibited and you can't go to the movies, how else can you spend your holy time?") Neurotica includes short stories and excerpts from novels by big names such as Philip Roth, Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Jerzy Kosinski, and Woody Allen, and by promising newcomers such as Nathan Englander and Michael Lowenthal. Some familiar selections (such as an excerpt from Erica Jong's once-scandalous Fear of Flying) now appear remarkably tame. But the sexual proclivities depicted in many of these selections are quite intense and sometimes disturbing--not fit for summary on a family Web site. So keep this one away from the kids, but curl up with it under the covers. It will give you veddy interesting dreams. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

Whoever it was who claimed that sex was the most fun you can have without laughing hadn't encountered Neurotica--an anthology of Jewish short stories, most of which uncover the hilarity inherent in carnality. It is a stellar collection of twenty-seven tales of sexual longing and consummation and frustration--of straight and gay sex, married, unmarried, and adulterous sex, filthy, platonic, and pathetic sex, great sex, awful sex, and solo sex--by many of the masters and the freshest new voices of the Jewish-American literary tradition. Some of the stories are graphic, some ethereal, some wildly comic, some deeply tragic, but all offer a distinctively Jewish point of view on a universal pastime and preoccupation. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll--well, only you know what you'll do.

4 out of 5 stars The people of the book, in bed.......2005-09-05

"Witness the people of the book, in bed." Thus editor Melvin Jules Bukiet invites the reader into the intimacies of Neurotica: Jewish Writers on Sex. In this collection, everyone from Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Philip Roth, and Isaac Bashevis Singer to Woody Allen and Erica Jong gets into the act of exploring sex in its many varieties-heterosexual, homosexual, incestuous, paid, humorous, poignant, intellectual, sadistic, masochistic, costumed-always from a distinctive, wry Jewish perspective. Note, though, that you don't have to be interested in erotica to appreciate Neurotica-just in good stories.

The anthology begins with a memorable story by Woody Allen, "The Whores of Mensa," an over-the-top private eye tale that cleverly and humorously reveals what many of us know but some have yet to discover-that sex is less a function of the nether regions and more one of the mind. This theme is continued and expanded in "The Courtship" from The Mind-Body Problem" by Rebecca Goldstein, in which the narrator says, "And I remember too the intensity of my pleasure, which wasn't at all physical . . . my head sang the triumphant thought: I am making love to this man . . . to Noam Himmel, the genius." Unfortunately, "The Courtship" is marred somewhat by this ending and the tone throughout, which makes it resemble less of a literary work and more of the author's personal fantasy, or what is known in fan fiction as a "Mary Sue" story.

Philip Roth adds imagination to the mix in an excerpt from The Counterlife in which a dentist suggest to his new assistant that they play dentist and assistant. She says, "Why is it so exciting when all we're pretending to be is what we are?" When his physical deficiencies win over his imagination, he plummets to the world that is, no what could be, which he cannot long survive.

No matter the theme, any anthology focused on Jewish writers is bound to include references to Germans, World War II, and the Holocaust. In "Jews Have No Business Being Enamored of Germans," Binnie Kirshenbaum's narrator confronts the Jewish self-hatred that could make a Jewish man with a "short and convenient view of history" prefer and seek out Germans and "Aryan intellectualism." Even the narrator's parents have succumbed to postmodern sense of tolerance or denial. "'Oh, none of that concerned us,' my mother waved off the Holocaust and a world war."

Michael Lowenthal takes a psychologically richer approach in "Infinity of Angles," in which a Jewish homosexual connects with a German, only to find his would-be lover identifies too closely with the persecuted and demands an unusual punishment.

While there's some humour in Neurotica, there is also mental illness. The two are combined in "Elvis, Axl, and Me" by Janice Eidus, who proves that Elvis isn't dead; he lives in The Bronx disguised as a Hasidic Jew. Mental illness appears again in "The Quality of Being a Ruby" by Cheryl Pearl Sucher, a thoroughly modern tale of a bipolar girl experiencing anxiety neurosis who picks up lovers, drops lithium, experiments with cocaine, and resists the advice of her protective father. "For Ruby, the distillation of the illness was 'Rubessence,' the perfect calm of inspired originality, the longed-for union of the desired and the real."

One of the best stories is "Taibele and Her Demon" by Isaac Bashevis Singer, who brings a fairy-tale simplicity to this complex tale of deception and love. As with any collection, there are several stories I didn't like, such as "Romancing the Yohrzeit Light" by Thane Rosenbaum, who tries too self-consciously to combine the sacred, the profane, and the silly. My favourite story was by Nathan Englander, titled "Peep Show." The troubled protagonist asks, "What is a boy raised in a world of absolutes to do when he is faced with contradictions?" The answer is, "You question. That's what you do," according to the nude rabbi his imagination has conjured. Despite the humorous and ludicrous situations in which the protagonist finds himself at the peep show, the tone of the story is strangely eerie in its reference to peep show nostalgia-a little like the tone of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes.

Although a few stories are set in places such as France, Germany, Italy, and Israel, most take place in the United States and are by Jewish-American authors. All are from the 20th century, which is disappointing since surely erotica by Jewish writers has been around at least as long as erotica by writers from other traditions. I would like to have seen more representation from other countries and time periods.

The location and time period, however, give Neurotica a couple of themes meant to appeal to a broad audience, including assimilation and secularization. In many of these stories, the faith, traditions, and rituals of Judaism are a mystery to the characters, primarily the younger ones. Noam Himmel, the genius, is an atheist ignorant of his cultural past. At one point, his seducer says, "You have heard of the Talmud?" He says later, "Sometimes, especially on insomniac nights, I start worrying that there may be a God, and worse, that he may be Jewish." In "Romancing the Yohrzeit Light," Adam doesn't "really care to go" to that part of the world, and he allows his Swedish lover to extinguish his mother's yohrzeit light. Like Adam, many of the characters actively seek goyim as lovers. Some of the older people speak Yiddish, but the young people do not. Yet, while religious, cultural, and even social bonds may seem to be disintegrating with assimilation after World War II, Neurotica shows that there is still a literary voice that has not been silenced and that remains uniquely Jewish.

4 out of 5 stars A very good friendship between sex and mind.......2002-03-28

I knew it before receiving this book from my boyfriend: almost every story would deal not only with sex, but also with books and other intelectual issues. Could we expect anything different from Woody Allen? Besides of oral sex, homosexual sex and this sort of things, Neurotica contains philosophy, psiconalisis, art, literature etc. It couldn't be different. Jews are totally connected with studies and culture, and they show it always, because this aspect of their personality is much stronger than almost everything else on them.
The most interesting story was written by Thane Rosenbaum, about the Yortzeit of the main character's mother. (I don't know the original name, because I read it in portuguese.) The story is very well written and complete, revealing the talent and facility that the author has with words.
About Woody Allen's narrative, I just can say that it is SO Woody Allen, you understand? It's very easy to feel his personality on it, specially for those who have seen Deconstructing Harry.
I haven't read the whole book yet, but I'm almost finishing it. I recommend Neurotica to everyone who likes to conciliate sex and mind.

The last observation: the book should be called Jewish AMERICAN writers on sex. Everyone is american or lives in the USA; however, there are many other jewish writers around the world that could have given their rich contribution.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars an A to Z guide to neurosis.......2007-05-30

There is plenty of cynical humor here as Winokur debunks the self-help trends of our times: celebrity "sufferings"; Freud and his discredited theories; various disorders and anxieties; psychobabble; various addictions; guilt and hypochondrias; neurosii and manias; phobias and rages; delusions and victimhoods - No one or thing seems to be spared from Winokur's dissecting sarcasms.

There are also biographical sketches of Howard Hughes, Alfred Hitchcock, Larry David (Seinfeld's writer), E.M. Cioran, and Woody Allen that are revealing and entertaining.

This collection of quotations and commentaries is not as compelling as previous collections from Winokur - Zen To Go and The Portable Curmudgeon are his best books. Still, an overall entertaining read.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift.......2007-01-09

This book is great fun. I bought one for myself and have given it as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars For Seinfeld, Richard Lewis, Lewis Black and Kathy Griffin fans.......2005-08-03

Jon Winokur has previously written or edited such books as 'The Portable Curmudgeon' and 'A Curmudgeon's Garden of Love' so it's no surprise that he came up with the encyclopedia arranged alphabetically with definitions and quotations on topics and eccentrics like

Carrie Fisher: 'Instant gratification takes too long.'
to
adolescent: 'One who suffers from hormone-induced dementia'
to
political correctness: "intellectually challenged" (stupid) and "economically disadvantaged" (poor).

This is a sort of Book of Hours with quotations that are guaranteed to have you laughing, or shaking your head in agreement, or thinking anew about too-generally accepted notions of our modern American society. It's all good humored - well, mostly - in the manner of 'Seinfeld.' (One of Winokur's heroes is Larry David, the writer of the first several seasons of that hit show.) He skewers the pretensions and group-think of our times with a light heart, but all with a barely suppressed growl. Irony and sarcasm abound, but also empathy (oh, he'd hate my using that word!) for those of us who are trying to make our way in this vale of tears.

This is the sort of book that you want to keep at your bedside for dipping into for a few minutes now and again. I will admit, though, that I read it through from beginning to end and had some difficulty putting it down.

4 out of 5 stars wonderfully neurotic.......2005-05-18

Call me a geek, but I like reference books: almanacs, atlases, thesauri, dictionaries and, yes, encyclopedias. I am also a student of psychology (although one who is procrastinating with the final step towards becoming a psychologist, the dissertation, instead writing book reviews for a blog). What a delight, then, to stumble across Winokur's Encyclopedia Neurotica, a compendium of Winokur's own entries and notable quotables on historical psychological terms, the latest pop "psychobabble" (see pps. 184-186), and brief biographies of eccentric folks

Between "the Absurd" and "zero-tolerance" (interesting bookends, to say the least), one can learn about traditional psychological terms, like the "id," and "conversion disorder," to new-fangled terms like "affluenza," or an illness characterized by a presence of or desire for wealth;" "cyberchondria," or the illness one gets from seeing one's symptoms on medical websites; and "mouse terror," the fearful belief that what scientists learn from mice in the lab, including susceptibility to disease, can be adequately translated to human beings.

Winokur also presents brief biographies of a number of wonderfully eccentric people, like Howard Hughes (an obsessive compulsive personality) and Larry David (Hollywood writer and co-creator of Seinfeld). The inclusion of these biographical entries in the Encyclopedia fits in line with Winokur's premise that we are all wonderfully weird and should embrace our own unique character quirks and personality defects. The autbographical sketch by Richard Lewis in the preface is as appropriate as it is funny as at is concise.

All in all, I thought the book was great and had a good balance of wit, humor, and sarcasm. Some brief entries could have been omitted. And maybe its my personality quirk, but the absence of sources for many of the entries was disappointing (Winokur asks us to take his word for their integrity, which I do, but its good to have the reference).
Finally, these probably just got past the editors: in the index, "abuse abuse" (not a redundancy) comes before "Absurd, the," and "sexual addiction" is transformed into "sexual addition" (which I am sure many would prefer to addiction). Maybe hypervigilance is just another character quirk of mine.

I would recommend it to all of my neurotic friends and colleagues.

Tabloid journalist Anna Shapiro has a problem. As she explains to her editor, Alison:
"I've been married to Dan for twelve years. He's been like this for yonks. Every week it's something different. First it was weakness in his legs and he diagnoses multiple sclerosis, then he feels dizzy and it's a brain tumor. Last week he decided he had some disease which, it turns out, you only get from fondling sheep. Alison, I can't tell you the extent to which no Jewish man fondles sheep."
Still, Dan's hypochondria might not be such an insurmountable obstacle if it weren't for the fact that he's afraid to have sex "in case the strain of it gives him a heart attack." Naturally, this state of enforced celibacy makes Anna the perfect person to take on a feature story about women and infidelity, to "go out and interview three slappers who make a habit of being unfaithful just for the sex." It isn't long, of course, before Anna decides that she would make a perfect subject for the story herself.

Neurotica, by British writer Sue Margolis, is one of many novels being compared to Bridget Jones's Diary. But whereas Bridget is frequently naughty, Anna tends toward the downright raunchy ("All through the lunch she had been aware that she was having a bad pubic hair day. The sideburns on her inner thighs were reaching a density that would have done a woolly mammoth proud"). Graphic sex scenes abound, usually followed by a punch line; eventually, however, Anna reaches a crisis point in which she must choose between her marriage or a new shot at love. Readers won't be unduly surprised by the choice she makes, for, despite all the bawdy talk, Neurotica is, at heart, a pretty conventional tale wrapped up in a risqué package. Though Margolis doesn't impart anything new on the subjects of love, sex, or marriage--or plastic surgery--her novel offers an amusing way to spend a few hours. --Margaret Prior

Book Description

If he always has the headache, why should you suffer?

In the bestselling tradition of Bridget Jones's Diary comes this outrageous, hilarious look at love, marriage, and sex, introducing Anna Shapiro, who believes that surely there must be more to married life....

Tabloid reporter Anna Shapiro can pinpoint the day, three years ago, that she and her husband, Dan, last had great sex. Anna would be grateful if something as ordinary as a mere headache was her husband's excuse; Dan's hypochondriac terrors include brain tumors, tropical diseases, and spontaneous combustion. While she loves her husband, she's not ready to give up on sex at age thirty-seven--so what can she do?

It's the perfect time for the distraction of a freelance assignment. But what her editor has in mind is a story on the explosive new feminist manifesto that prescribes no-strings-attached affairs for women. Anna's assignment is to interview three women who've had extramarital affairs purely for sexual pleasure--but she's inclined to take her research a bit further....

Can a woman have an uncomplicated affair purely for sexual pleasure--or do her emotions invariably interfere? Anna's determined to find out. And despite her worries about her middle-aged body, potential research assistants prove to be plentiful.

Going where no journalist has gone before, Anna delves into a world she'd never considered until now. What is, after all, the perfect outfit for committing adultery in? Is it truly beyond the pale to pick up a man--no matter how sexy he is--at a funeral? And what can be done about that single horrifying gray hair? The answers are more hilarious than Anna could ever have predicted.

But soon Anna finds herself facing the question that she never thought she'd have to answer: Is she willing to give up her marriage and her children for what may be the biggest gamble of her life?

A novel for every woman who's ever wondered--and every woman who hasn't-- Neurotica will have you roaring with laughter as it takes you on a wickedly delightful journey of sheer indulgence.

1 out of 5 stars Incredibly disappointing.......2006-09-13

Don't waste your time reading this book. It provided absolutely zero entertainment. It really wasn't that funny at all. Sue Margolis tried to be creative with her story, but it ended up being cheesy, predictable, and too far fetched to be enjoyable. Her characters had no depth, and she actually brought too many different characters into the story. Her storyline was all over the place with a slew of players, almost all of them insignificant, and it only made things confusing. It left me wondering what the whole point of the book was.

1 out of 5 stars Wow! This book was sooooooo BAD!.......2006-04-19

I have read 3 other Sue Margolis boks and enjoied them all. This book was really really BAD!

5 out of 5 stars This one rocks.......2004-12-28

As a mother of two this one really rang a bell with me. I loved the heroine, Anna's attitude to kids, especially the bit where she comments that she and her mate Brenda were the only two women she knew who were much less excited by their babies first words and steps than by getting a terrific set of highlights.

This one pulls off a double header: it is unbelievably funny while at the same time really grabbing your emotions and making you root for Anna. Her hypochondriac husband is hilarious too.

This book is so, so, so funny. I don't understand why this writer isn't more famous. I am now off to devour the rest of her books.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-10-08

I loved Spin Cycle by Sue Margolis so I went out and got Neurotica right away. I could not have been more disappointed by this book. I thought it was totally tasteless, crass and unrealistic to name a few things. I usually really like these types of books (British Humor), but this one was truly awful. It was like I was reading a book by a totally different author than Spin Cycle, I couldn't believe it. I'd advise anyone to steer clear of this one, but that's just my taste.

2 out of 5 stars Funnny, but very thin, and ultimately stupid.......2004-01-04

I laughed out loud multiple times reading this book, which is why it took a while for me to realize that "funny lines do not a good book make." The plot is far fetched, the characters are superficial, the "erotica" is crass and amateurish, and the ending is absurd. It barely qualifies as a good beach read, and I felt like I needed a bath upon finishing it. I gave it two stars for the humor. But really--dumb, dumb, dumb.

Imaginative and captivating! J.K. Potter here has presented some of the best photo manipulations available. Some very nice darkroom and digital work. This book contains some of Potter's personal works as well as a nice selection of comercial work.

The book lay out is superb and photo comentaries humorous at times. The photos will reach out and grab you (Possibly ripping you limb from limb, but that is a bonus). You will either love this book or hate it.

3 out of 5 stars Odd and Creative.......2002-06-05

This book is very interesting. I was not at pleased with it as I expected, though. The photographer is creative and portrays some very interesting situations. Most of the book is in black and white. Many of the pictures are entirely too strange for my tastes. They have often been warped a little too much, rendering the images too busy and, in some cases, unrecognizable. The pictures are fascinating, but do not purchase this book unless you intend to view extreme modifications to photographs.

When's the last time you ate a man... through your stomach? When's the last time you've seen an angel... in the nude? When's the last time you had a woman walk on your face... with her fingers? J.K. Potter has taken scenarios that are out of the ordinary and made them a helluva lot stranger and far far darker. Admired and posed for by Poppy Z. Brite, praised by Stephen King, Potter is the darkest entity in the art of photography, and it's all real, no computer editing, this is all darkroom work, which adds incredibly to the mystic of what Potter has become capable of doing. The conversation piece of the shadow lurkers, and the oddity and fetish of the average person, Neurotica embodies all that is horrific.

Tired of the same ol' boring erotica? Can't stand reading about someone's "honey pot" or the bald-headed stranger? If you want to kick it up a notch like Emeril, this collection of short stories is for you. With three sections, Neurotica: An Honest Examination into Urban Sexual Relations showcases sex on different levels, highlighting the neuroses and nuances of sexual situations and relationships. The former takes the reader on a journey more similar to traditional erotica, but with personality and realism. The second section deals with the mishaps and embarrassing moments few tell of sexual debacles. Neurotica's last section, The Ugly, details the feelings and thoughts of people in scenarios that might otherwise seem normal. momowilly engages the reader with detail and ambiguity, laughter and tears, all while stimulating your erogenous zones. Men and women alike will appreciate her fresh take on a stale genre, turning her week-old bread into French toast.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Didn't Wanna Like It, But I Was Forced!.......2007-02-05

If I am to be honest, I began reading neurotica by momowilly (lack of capitalization is the author's) with a sour taste in my mouth. I was intrigued and curious, having read many advertisements and notices from the author boasting the virtues of her own writing. However, the arrogance demonstrated in the blurb located at the back of the book disturbed me.

"In a market saturated with clichéd trash...."

"Distancing herself from the vulgar musings of the likes of Zane..."

These lofty remarks piqued my interest, but they also caused me to raise an eyebrow. This girl is bold. I hope she has what it takes to back those statements up, I thought to myself while flipping to the first page in this twenty-four story collection.

Before long, my eyebrow raised yet again, but for an entirely different reason. momowilly truly proves herself to be unlike any other erotica writer that I have had the pleasure of reading to date. Her versatility amazed me. For example, the author was able to smoothly transition from a raw, gritty, hard-core hood vernacular in one story, told from the point of view of a smoking, drinking, cursing female who often hung with the boys in more ways than one, to a proper, well-educated, and wealthy computer aficionado with an old high school hatchet to bury. What impressed me most was how flawlessly momowilly was able to bring authenticity to so many different characters. As each new story was told in the first person, it became highly imperative for the author to be able to stay true to her character's personalities through her writing style. She did not disappoint. I found myself smiling at her skills, and nodding admiringly as I read her art. Although I had doubted her abilities in the beginning, she forced me to acknowledge her incredible writing prowess. I am the first to admit when I am wrong, and this was definitely one of those times!

I don't know if the extreme arrogance is necessarily justified, but the fact that momowilly is a breed all to her own is not to be questioned. This writer is going places, and I intend to read each of her books along the way!

5 out of 5 stars Hottness.......2006-08-28

This was one of the hottest books, I've read in a long time. I literally could not put it down, took me just 3 hours to read. This book is a definite MUST-READ. Buy a copy for all your friends, they'll love you. Momowilly is definitely on her way UP!!

5 out of 5 stars Never read anything realer than this!.......2006-08-12

I found Momowilly on myspace reading and listening to her poetry, and then I bought the book. Let me tell you this is the REALest book I've ever read! It's even better than The coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah. It's so funny!
The book has 3 different sections, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. At the beginning, the storeis are sexy and hot like zane's but they're SOOOOO funny and realistic, unlike Zane's. Then the second section, the stories are sexy, but they all make you say "SHAME!" because they're all really embarrassing stuff. Too funny! Then the last section makes you go "Damn!" that section has the really hard-core sex situations, with more real talk than Jeezy and Rick Ross combined.
Momowilly is HILARIOUS! I have to hide it in my room so my friends don't steal it. If you like to read sexy stories that aren't CORNY and fake, that keep it real in every word, then DEFINITELY PICK UP THIS BOOK and check out her poetry. That one posted at the top is aaa-ight, but her myspace stuff is BANANAS!!!!!
I'm her newest fan, you'll be one too!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Paper.......2006-08-07

Good Grief Charlie Brown. Why does everyone think they can write these days? So sad.

5 out of 5 stars RAW: Real as . . . whatever.......2006-06-12

Look. Don't look. Look. That is what you'll be telling yourself throughout reading this book. You'll obviously give in to looking, otherwise, how else are you going to read it, duh. The more important question is of a private matter. Why did and will you finish reading this book to its end. And you likely will and should.

Neurotica: An Honest Examination into Urban Sexual Relations is one of the most engaging reads of its kind. What makes this read so unique is the varying character's voices and points of view. Author momowilly masterfully writes multiple appealing sexual experiences from an urban perspective.

Everyone's on top, looking in on twenty-four sex driven relationships that will leave you gasping for more. You'll be tempted to pick a favorite. Caution! In doing so, you might be revealing something about yourself. I'll never tell.

Like the proverbial message in the bottle, there are social commentaries within each of the stories in this book. If you don't get it, then shame on you. It's there in black and white, and a shade of "Bathed in Gold" and "Valentine's Day Massacre" red. You'll get it.

Monique Williams' style of writing is that combined with Sistah Souljah's streetwise and Zane's erotica, but to the next level.
