The further adventures of talent agency assistant Lizzie Miller as she finally gets some traction on the slippery Hollywood slope
In The Second Assistant, readers across the country found a heroine they loved to love in Lizzie Miller, the smart and witty East Coast girl clinging for dear life to the bottom rung of the Hollywood ladder. But no more coffee runs and sorting thumbtacks by color for Lizzie; she's been promoted. As first assistant to Scott Wagner, now president of The Agency and one of Hollywood's premiere movers and shakers, she's making decisions and learning the ins and outs of the business. But unlike the other airhead assistants, she's not being wooed by the glamour and mystique of Lala Land. At least, that's what she tells herself. But with a fabulous boyfriend and visions of Harry Winston diamonds and a black AmEx dancing in her head, it is getting harder for Lizzie to keep her pumps firmly on the ground.
In The First Assistant, Clare Naylor and Mimi Hare have again joined forces to take a wry and hilarious look at the wheeling, dealing, schmoozing, and snubbing that make Hollywood the cutthroat capital of the world. Readers are hungry for moreand The First Assistant is just the romp into the red-carpet world that they crave.

Nothing spectacular, but entertaining........2007-08-18
This was a quick and easy read, which I welcomed after reading some heavier and more serious books this summer. While this wasn't a groundbreaking novel by any means, it was entertaining and light--perfect for the beach or to occupy some time while traveling.
As others mentioned, some of the plot didn't make any sense (the scene with the Swedish mafia, the boyfriend cat's, etc) or add anything to the novel. I did enjoy the gossipy vibe of the novel and loved the part that obviously poked fun at the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes marriage. It had been a while since I'd read The Second Assistant: A Tale from the Bottom of the Hollywood Ladder and it seemed to draw a little bit of the storyline from the first novel without much explanation.
In the end, it was the literary equivalent of Cheetos--it's yummy and satisfying, but you don't receive any nutrients from it and you don't feel especially full when you're done with it.
Great read!.......2007-06-08
I had read the second assistant when it came it out and thought it was okay but not oustanding. This newest additional far outweighs the first book. Once I started reading it I could barely put it down. If you liked Clare Naylor's Dog Handling then you will like this!
Naylor needs a new editor.......2007-05-30
To me, "The First Assistant" was amusing but irritating in equal measure due to the utterly predictable plot, the unfleshed-out character, Luke, and annoying basic grammar errors such as "Who's phone is this?" Not nearly as good as "The Second Assistant."
amusing chick lit.......2007-05-17
A the Agency, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Miller feels euphoric over her promotion from Second Assistant to First Assistant at The Agency although she does not have to work. Her fiancé is wealthy movie superstar Luke Lloyd, who would gladly let Lizzie spend his money. However, she feels she must make it on her own even though that means at times living below the poverty line.
Currently Luke is on location in the Czech Republic filming a movie with his ex-girlfriend Emanuelle Saix as his costar. Amber Bingham Fox, the person who replaced Lizzie as Second Assistant when she was promoted, is a nasty SOB who plans to do anything to replace the FIRST ASSISTANT ASAP. Finally, Scott Wagner, her boss at the Agency, sends Lizzie to Thailand for three months to work with star teen Emerald Everhart, who has allowed fame to get into her head and turned her into a party hardy child. Worse for her, Luke's housekeeper found her sleeping with a man. Work for Lizzie as THE FIRST ASSISTANT gets just as crazy as when she was THE SECOND ASSISTANT; only this time her personal life has fizzled out while the adventures keep on coming.
This is a fun look "behind the Hollywood curtain" at those who hope to one day walk on a red rug instead of rolling it out for others. Lizzie is at her frazzled best struggling with work and the collapse of her personal life. Although there is little that has not been used before in books including THE SECOND ASSISTANT, fans will enjoy this amusing chick lit continues to go Hollywood (and Thailand).

A good book for the airplane.......2007-05-10
This book is the sequel to The Second Assistant and is equally silly. It was a quick fun read with many Hollywood honchos parodied as over the top characters. It's not a thought provoking or stimulating read, but was great for a few good laughs!

Excellent resource for paralegals of all experience levels.......1999-06-30
In my job as Career Development Coordinator for a major ABA-approved paralegal school, I frequently recommend this book to current students and graduates alike. I recommend it to new paralegals as a step-by-step guide to finding a job, and to experienced paralegals as a great tool for making sure that your job-search skills are as sharp as your legal skills.
Greatly improve your employment prospects: Use this resource.......1999-05-24
I loaned this book to a friend who had trouble finding decent paralegal employment. Within 7 days, she had 2 quality offers. I referred her to the chapters on networking, job searches, the interview, and salary negotiation strategies. I also included a separate salary survey. So the book paid immediate dividends for my friend. I also refer to the book frequently. I just completed paralegal school and still use the book for the resume and cover letter information. This book reads easily, cover all of the pertinent subjects, and is useful from the time a paralegal career and education are being considered, untilyour first year in your new job. Experienced paralegals should find all of the chapters relating to job hunting very useful and updated. However, I do have a problem, that is I don't have enough copies to loan to my friends. The book is only helpful when used, though. If you choose to let it collect dust, you will not receive the full benefits of all of the tested tips and advice.

Book Description
Many universities are concerned about improving the pedagogy used by their graduate students in the classroom. Yet few universities provide adequate training or support. As a result, most new graduate student teachers feel overwhelmed by the demands of being both a teacher and a student.
Written from the perspective of both professors who have been in the classroom for many years and inexperienced teachers of the "I wish someone had told me" variety, First Day to Final Grade should be every graduate student's first step in teaching. The guiding principle of this book is that, while theoretical wisdom about teaching is important, graduate students need specific, practical answers to questions that arise during the semester.
The text is written to function as a quick reference tool, but is equally effective when read from start to finish in preparation for teaching. It focuses on the "how tos" of teaching, such as setting up a lesson plan, running a discussion, and grading, as well as issues specific to the teaching assistant's unique role as both student and teacher, such as working effectively with the course professor and balancing teaching with graduate studies.
While some of the text addresses only first-time teachers, experienced teaching assistants can learn new teaching strategies from the material and use the specific lesson plans provided to vary their pedagogical approach. In addition, sections addressing the needs of international teaching assistants, questions of authority, diversity in the classroom, and various learning styles will also prove helpful to many.

Good practical resource for a TA.......2007-09-06
Very helpful for graduate students who may receive little to no guidance in their teaching assistantships. As with most books of this nature, some topics address issues that are out of the graduate student's control, but will nevertheless be helpful for the future. Chapters cover a wide range of topics from designing a syllabus, weekly preparation, and running a discussion, to office hours and balancing student/teaching life. I relied heavily on this book when teaching a course for teaching assistants.
Excellent Resource for the Graduate Student TA.......2001-01-02
Considering that universities are relying more and more on graduate student instruction these days, I often wondered why none of the books I saw about teaching were directed towards grad students. Curzan & Damour's book fills that need and offers useful suggestions that will be appreciated by graduate student instructors and the faculty that supervise them. The strength of the book is that the authors clearly speak from personal experience about the issues unique to graduate student instructors. They give useful advice that ranges from the broad (how to lead discussions, how to grade a paper) to the more specific yet nevertheless important (how to dress, how to respond to student emails). That this is a book designed specifically for grad student teachers is demonstrated by coverage of topics such as how to maintain respect and authority in the classroom even though you might only be a few years older than your students, and how to deal with requests from students to socialize with them. I read the book before my first semester of graduate teaching, and I would highly recommend that others do the same. And anyone who supervises or works with graduate student instructors should consider getting the book for them as part of their training/development as teachers. As I said earlier, this book fits an important need given the growing number of courses taught by grad students, and it does so in an easy-to-read and very practically-useful manner. I've used the book in my own training, and as I move on to a faculty career, I will incorporate it into my work with other graduate students.

This book got me through first semester paramedic school........2007-01-04
This book was easy to navigate and very helpful for the assignments given in class. I liked the illustrations and explanations. The questions at the beginning of the chapters really helped guide/ focus my reading and studying. Our instructors must have used them to produce many of our homework assignments. The progression was mostly logical and quite easy to understand.
Too many books!.......2006-02-05
There are 5 volumes for this Paramedic Care series! It's a bit much, and could have been made easier. The authors have a lot of duplicate information throughout the books, which becomes irritating for the student. I found myself reading the same text in different volumes on many occasions. Some of the wording can be a little tricky when it doesn't have to be.
It's not a terrible series, but I would hope there's something better out there.
