5 out of 5 stars Best of all Clive Cusslers.......2007-06-29

Shock wave....what would you think this would be about? Well its not!!!! As usual, Clive Cussler goes out of his way to keep you guessing, and as always, you fall in love with Dirk!!! LOL

4 out of 5 stars Better supporting cast development.......2007-06-19

The theme is still basically the same as the previous novels, but in Shockwave Cussler uses more of the minor characters to save the day instead of just Pitt and Giordano. I like the extended character development and hope to see more of the supporting cast in the future.

2 out of 5 stars Strong start, bad finish.......2006-07-29

This book starts out strong. It seemed like it was going to be the best Pitt novel I had read to date. But then enters the completely unbelievable plot to save the day. I suggest reading the first 100 pages and then moving to another book.

4 out of 5 stars Another Dirk Pitt superhero event.......2006-07-27

The plots are always intriguing, but after several Dirk Pitt books, you know he'll survive impossible odds, invent impossible solutions, have a romance, and be the hero again. It's getting to get old.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-05-01

Shock Wave is a great book for many reasons. A few are the fact the Clusser makes his characters, settings, and the situations in his books believable. I am really into the fact that a book has to be realistic to please me and I really enjoyed it. Firstly his characters, his characters don't have these seemingly impossible abilities, they are average people that when it comes time to do something they take care of it. Such is the description of the main character, Dirk Pitt who is part of the NUMA underwater research association is described as tall, muscular, and cool. His long time friend and partner Al who adds the comic part to Clusser's novels is always trying to get girl or making a joke about the situation they're in. All the settings in the book are real places which range from the Arctic to the Caribbean islands, another thing I liked about the way the book was written was that the characters don't jump magically from setting to setting either and how they get from place to place is explained so as not to lose the reader. Finally, the situations that Pitt finds himself in are quite believable for a man is his position. He does everything from stop a cruise liner from running ashore to masquerading as an engineer in a diamond mine to find the cause of a deadly sea plague. In conclusion I think that this is a great book to read because of it's realism and how it flows through the story at a reasonably fast pace to keep you hooked.

      Book Description

Systems of conservation laws arise naturally in physics and chemistry. To understand them and their consequences (shock waves, finite velocity wave propagation) properly in mathematical terms requires, however, knowledge of a broad range of topics. This book sets up the foundations of the modern theory of conservation laws describing the physical models and mathematical methods, leading to the Glimm scheme. Building on this the author then takes the reader to the current state of knowledge in the subject. The maximum principle is considered from the viewpoint of numerical schemes and also in terms of viscous approximation. Small waves are studied using geometrical optics methods. Finally, the initial-boundary problem is considered in depth. Throughout, the presentation is reasonably self contained, with large numbers of exercises and full discussion of all the ideas. This makes it an ideal text for graduate courses in the area of partial differential equations.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible for the Study of the hydrodynamics of high temperature, compressible fluids.......2006-10-09

This majisterial work by the famous Russian physicist/astrophysicist Yakov B. Zeldovich is the first and last book to refer to when studying the hydrodynamics of compressible fluids at high temperatures. The author's primary goal is to describe (as well as possible in a roughly 1000 page text) the physics, chemistry, and radiation diagnostics (i.e. radiative transfer) of a 20 kt thermonuclear explosion in the atmosphere. This book will be of use to a wide range of physicists and astrophysicists in other areas of research as well, though. The book begins with a (brief) discussion of the basics of the physics of shocks (and the hydrodynamics/thermodynamics of supersonic flow in general). More detailed topics include a detailed discussion of the ionization of the air (i.e. a change of adiabatic index from 7/5 to 5/3), the broad band spectrum of the explosion, and many others. Any absolute must have for any scientist studying compressible/supersonic flows.

        5 out of 5 stars a treasure.......2006-02-25

This book is a true classic, written by the great Zel'dovich
a long time ago. Dover's two-volumes-in-one book new edition
provides an excellent opportunity to enrich every physics
        library, private or institutional.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have It!.......2002-07-04

This rare gem presents theory, experiments, and applications in a comprehensive and accessible manner. This is a must-have for theorists and experimentalists: it brings theorists back to earth, and gives experimentalists scientific rigor.

5 out of 5 stars The definiative text on the subject.......2002-05-03

I am happy to see this outstanding text in print once again. This book is a must have for all who are interested in the subject of radiation-hydrodynamics.

5 out of 5 stars The best book EVER on high-temperature flows........2002-04-19

The republication by Dover Publications of this masterwork by Ya. B. Zel'dovich and Yu. P. Raizer will be welcomed by all workers dealing with high-temperature (radiating) flows. This book is a virtual "Bible" for studies of shocks and radiation fronts in high speed aeronautics, astronautics (re-entry), astrophysics, fireballs, shock tubes, and very intense explosions.

Zel'dovich was a physicist of extraordinary breadth of interests. The style of this book is to give heuristic explanations followed by rigorous analysis. It is insightful for both beginning students and researchers in the field. This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST for anyone working on the subjects listed above.

The Dover edition binds both original volumes as one, and is based on the very scarce second printing, in which most of the typographical errors in the first printing were corrected. All other errors noted over the years since the original edition went out of print have been collected and corrected in this version, which should be virtually error free.

I URGE anyone working in astrophysics and high-temperature flow physics to buy, read, enjoy, and be enlightened by this masterpiece.

          Book Description

Hydronamics of Explosion presents the research results for the problems of underwater explosions and contains a detailed analysis of the structure and the parameters of the wave fields generated by explosions of cord and spiral charges, a description of the formation mechanisms for a wide range of cumulative flows at underwater explosions near the free surface, and the relevant mathematical models. Shock-wave transformation in bubbly liquids, shock-wave amplification due to collision and focusing, and the formation of bubble detonation waves in reactive bubbly liquids are studied in detail. Particular emphasis is placed on the investigation of wave processes in cavitating liquids, which incorporates the concepts of the strength of real liquids containing natural microinhomogeneities, the relaxation of tensile stress, and the cavitation fracture of a liquid as the inversion of its two-phase state under impulsive (explosive) loading. The problems are classed among essentially nonlinear processes that occur under shock loading of liquids and may be of interest to researchers in physical acoustics, mechanics of multiphase media, shock-wave processes in condensed media, explosive hydroacoustics, and cumulation.

            Product Description

Shock Waves in multiphase media refer to a rich variety of phenomena of interest for physicists, chemists, mechanical, biomedical and aeronautical engineers, as well as fluid dynamicists. This volume treats shock and expansion waves in

(bullet) complex, bubbly liquids (L van Wijngaarden, Y Tomita, V Kendrinskii)

            (bullet) cryogenic liquids (M Murakami)

And examines the relationship of shock waves with

(bullet) phase transitions (A Guha, CF Delale, G Schnerr, MEH van Dongen)

as well as their interaction with

(bullet) solid foams, textiles, porous and granular media (B Skews, DMJ Smeulders, MEH van Dongen, V Golub, O Mirova)

All chapters are self-contained, and can be read independently of each other, though they are of course thematically interrelated. They offer a timely reference, for beginners, as well as professional scientists and engineers, on shock waves in multiphase media with new viewpoints and on the burgeoning developments.

              Book Description

This book is the first of several volumes on solids in the Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library. These volumes are primarily concerned with high-pressure shock waves in solid media, including detonation, high-velocity impact, and penetration. Of the eight chapters in this volume three chapters survey recent, exciting experimental advances in: - Ultra-short shock dynamics at the atomic and molecular scale (D.S. More, S.D. Mcgrane, and D.J. Funk), - Z accelerator for ICE and Shock compression (M.D. Knudson), and - Failure waves in glass and ceramics (S.J. Bless and N.S. Brar).

The subsequent four chapters are foundational, and cover the subjects of : - Equation of state (R. Menikoff), - Elastic-plastic shock waves (R. Menikoff), - Continuum plasticity (R. M. Brannon), and - Numerical methods (D. J. Benson).

The last chapter, but not the least, describes a tour de force illustration of today’s computing power in modeling heterogeneous reactive solids at the grain scale (M.R. Baer).

All chapters are each self-contained, and can be read independently of each other, though they are of course thematically interrelated. They offer a timely reference, for beginners, as well as professional scientists and engineers, on the foundations of shock waves in solids with new viewpoints, and on the burgeoning developments.
