Book Description
Lynn Johnston's award-winning For Better or For Worse comic strip is the world's most popular strip in which characters evolve through age and experience, rather than remaining frozen in time. Fans appreciate that the daily doings of the Patterson family often closely resemble their own.
Featuring more than 43 weeks of strips, with Sundays in color, this collection features Elizabeth's developing teaching skills working in a northern First Nation's community, Mike and Deanna's move to Mrs. Saltzman's upstairs apartment, April's confrontation of teenage issues like acne and self-image, while John and Elly face middle-age ailments and the possibility of retirement. For Better of For Worse has been syndicated since 1979 and has been named Best Syndicated Comic Strip by the National Cartoonists Society. The strip boasts a lively Web presence at www.fborfw.com

I love these people.......2007-07-14
I know it's a cartoon, but Lynn Johnston captures home life so well that I feel I've known this family intimately for years. I'm fascinated by Elizabeth's choice to teach in such a remote area. I learn so much from her experiences there. I've got all the books from the first and frequently reread them from start to finish. This latest is in perfect keeping with the others. As Lynn takes us further from home base, we become involved with those extended people in the lives of Ellie's children. There's a whole world there that we will miss when Lynn decides it's time to pack it in.
Another winner.......2007-04-07
Lynn Johnston has done it again. What a great treasury of her cartoons - we can see the entire family growing through their own thing - at the same time we can feel the family sticking together.
I was a bit surprised at the arrival of the "attack" Elizabeth storyline - as I always find that Lynn's world is a little sugary, but it was well done and is obviously a ploy to bring Anthony back into the fold.
Great series.
More than an experience!.......2007-04-03
As a teacher, I have found this particular volume of Lynn Johnson's to touch a particular chord with me. But then again, I have been using her cartoon strips to teach with, for years. Her gentle yet penetrating way of looking at life with children, from babyhood through the teen years with its peer pressure, to adulthood, make me laugh out loud and cry as well. Long may she put out her strip, well into great grandmotherhood!
Another Great book ..........2007-03-30
Another Great book to visit the Patterson's with. "For Better / For Worse" has to be one of the best comic strips of all time. It really makes you think, "They are just like my family", and if you do not have kids, read the books so you know what to prepare for.
Curious trend for overly perfect children........2007-03-25
Michael and Elizabeth, the beloved child stars of formerly funny comic strip, "For Better Or For Worse", are now both so talented and good-looking they're hardly recognizable anymore.
Even more curious than ever, those dazzling models of young adults have both moved back in with their parents (the boy has actually dragged along his own family) even after having launched fabulously successful careers (the boy has even gotten his first book published as well as passing down his superb genes to his offspring and the girl had been enjoying an exotic position of teaching precocious Native American tots as well as being chased by the most dashing dreamboat predators found in the tackiest romance novels.)
Now the sweet young Elizabeth Patterson is pouting her suddenly full lips and moping around the house like she's a moody little girl once again - without a job and silently glaring at her brother behind his back as he is reaping in newfound fame and fortune. While Warren, the rakishly handsome helicopter pilot, is watching her every move and waiting to make his own strike - and eventually betray her, too. (We all know how it would end: Elizabeth eventually marries her childhood sweetheart, Anthony and gives his own dusky, raven-tressed daughter a whole supply of curly-haired, blue-eyed Kewpie-doll siblings. Nothing new.)
At least April, now that she is no longer in the spotlight as a dimpled little troublemaker, has taken on the role of a rather colorless, though somewhat pesky young teenager.

A solid FBOFW book........2007-03-08
We own all of the "For Better or For Worse" books and the whole family enjoys them! In fact some of us read them more than once. This one is just as good as the others.
The loss of a previously good strip.......2007-01-18
Although I am a longtime reader of For Better or For Worse, the last few years have been painful. This collection begins to show the downward slide of the storytelling and artwork. The native characters introduced have recently been completely trashed by Ms. Johnston, and this collection also covers the ongoing story of two main characters who conduct an emotional affair, even though one character is married and has a child. Even more bizarrely, everyone in the strip is portrayed as endorsing the breakup of the characters marriage and the hookup of these two.
Many of the forums devoted to FBOFW, have completely predicted all the storylines months (sometimes years)in advance. The plots are predictable and the character developments have been completely messed up, simply to fit into a nice little tie-up for Johnston's scheduled retirement date. Unfortunately, she should have retired two years ago when readers still had an affection for the characters.
Good Laugh.......2007-01-10
Really enjoyed this book, chuckled again over the strips we had enjoyed in the newspaper.

Feels like family.......2006-07-15
I've been reading FBorFW for over twenty years. The Pattersons feel 'like family'. I bought this book for my Dad and before I could send it to him, my teen-aged sons read it. They too are now hooked. Lynn Johnston deals with real life issues. I've laughed, cried, and reflected over this strip as I have no other. It's the only one I've kept up with consistently since I began reading it. I also check it out on-line as my newspapers do not carry it.
WARNING: USE CARE WHEN HANDLING FROZEN TURKEYS!.......2001-08-04
"The Last Straw" is the fifth For Better or For Worse collection, and features strips from 1984 and 1985. In the FBOFW timeline, Michael is eight going on nine, Elizabeth is four going on five and bratty April (sorry, but she IS a brat!) won't be born for another six years.
In addition to a very funny and memorable storyline in which the father, John, drops a 25 lb. frozen turkey on his foot (OUCH!), this collection also features a funeral for a caterpillar, Michael and Elizabeth getting into mischief while Elly and John sleep off their New Years' Day hangovers (they're awakened by the smoke alarm!), Elizabeth's misadventure in an airport and Elly's brother Phil (remember him?) trying to quit smoking. A young Deanna even makes an appearance here.
As I write this, this book is currently out of print, but used copies turn up on occasion. I recommend this book highly!
Book Description
Art imitating life. That's what happens in Lynn Johnston's perennially popular comic strip, For Better or For Worse. By reflecting on her own family and experiences, she created the Pattersons: Elly, John, Michael, Elizabeth, and April, along with grandparents, grandchildren, friends, and coworkers and the everyday situations they deal with.
In Never Wink at a Worried Woman, life is progressing for each character. Elly and John tenuously think of retirement while still being preoccupied parents of a preteen. Michael and Deanna grow into their roles as new parents while Michael's career gets a new boost. Elizabeth takes more steps to adulthood, by beginning her student teaching and facing the fact that Anthony is marrying another. April is racing to turn 13, busy with her band and also helping out at Lilliput's, where she makes a painful discovery about a coworker. Add in Grampa Jim's quest to maintain his aging dignity and baby Meredith's burgeoning curiosity, and you get a full dose of life.
For Better or For Worse has appealed to readers for more than 25 years. It runs in more than 2,000 newspapers in the U.S., Canada, and 20 other countries and is translated into eight languages besides English.

Never Wink at a Worried Woman.......2007-05-15
What hasn't already been said about For Better or For Worse- it's all true. Not many cartoons can stand up to these.
Who could not relate the the Pattersons.......2007-03-30
First I'm prejudice. There has never been a "For Better/For Worst" book that I have not liked. With that said, this was most enjoyable. Seeing Jim and El start really thinking of retirement and the kids growing up.
Good.......2006-02-25
This book... I can't say it any rates. I collect ALL of books that Lynn Johnston writes. :)
The latest compilation of "For Better or For Worse" newspaper comic strips.......2005-11-12
Never Wink at a Worried Woman is the latest compilation of "For Better or For Worse" newspaper comic strips, following the daily life of the Patterson family - parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, and friends. Unlike the majority of comic strips, in which the family (and its children!) never age and remain bizarrely the same from year to year, "For Better or For Worse" embraces the realism of advancing years and the toll that changes in the seasons have on life. In Never Wink at a Worried Woman, Elly and John are carefully beginning to think about retirement, while Elizabeth approaches adulthood, Micheal and Deanna try to balance the demands of being new parents, and baby Meredith is bursting with curiosity about the world around her while Grandpa Jim strives to maintain his dignity despite the toll of age. The warm, soulful humor of the comic retains a fresh, empathic charm, all needed more desperately than ever in today's era of sarcasm, shallowness and sound bites. Highly recommended.
Another winner.......2005-10-28
This treasury by Lynn Johnston is another winner. Taking a very close look at the children this time around, the comic strips are a pure joy.
Buy this one and enjoy.

Striking A Chord: A For Better or For Worse Collection.......2005-10-01
L. Johnson continues the saga of her growing and aging family in the grace and humor she is so well known for. As delightful and humorous as her previous books, her family continues to feel like their your very own family.
One of the family.......2005-08-16
Since my divorce 17 years ago Lynn Johnston's creations have been distant family to me. This latest book in her series simply gives me another chance to visit with them! I have the entire collection and have enjoyed every single slice of family life she's provided. While it's hard to watch them, and me, age, it's great to feel a part of something built on a solid foundation. Lynn has that ability in every stroke of her pen. Life, death, success, failure...they all experience it and sweep you into the story. As long as she's drawing, I'm reading and collecting. Thanks, Lynn.
I'm amazed..........2005-08-08
at how Lynn Johnston keeps a fresh, new perspective in her comic strip. She's not a "funny" as her old comic strips used to be, but she always hits home, and always leads me to look forward to the following strip. This book is another wonderful collection, with insight, some good puns, and a couple of laugh-out-loud moments. But mostly, the ability to know your life is "normal!" Lynn Johnston identifies with us, and then draws it. Wonderful!
Another winner.......2005-04-23
I am such a huge fan of the For Better of For Worse cartoons. Lynn Johnston always does such a wonderful job of bringing everyday family life into focus while maintaining some degree of "funny".
This little book is no exception. Featuring all of the members of the family, this book is a wonderful look at the more recent strips. Even a little look at Farley and Mr. B. (which kind of still brought tears to my eyes).
The only comment I have that is negative is that these books are so small, only takes about 30 minutes to go through it. I feel as though I just start it and poof its finished.
Still, the quality is there.

A good synopsis of 25 years of a superb comic.......2007-06-07
I always enjoy "For Better or For Worse". You don't get this book to see new material, much of it I've already seen in Lynn's other works. Instead you get it because of the commentary and perspective that it puts on a comic that has not only been around for 28 years (as of this posting) but has grown and matured as I have over the past 3 decades.
There are insightful mini-essays from folks near and dear to Lynn that help to give you some insight what it must be like living in the same circles as someone who can produce such great work. I get the sense that she's not the easiest person in the world to be around sometimes, but for all involved those less than rational moments seem to be more than outweighed by the wonders and tribulations expressed by this "parallel family" from Lynn's mind.
The comic is still as fresh as it ever was and I still look forward to reading the strip each evening.
wonderful collection.......2007-05-08
I loved reading through this and catching up on the Pattersons since the comic started being published before I could read. what a truly wonderful collection. this is my favorite comic strip of all time and this book is truly enjoyable. thank you Lynn Johnston for making us laugh and cry through the years.

Smiling down memory lane.......2006-07-19
I just wanted a pick me up so I purchased this book. I have always enjoyed For Better or For Worse and this book did not disappoint. It brought back memories of past stories on this comic strip and a big smile to my face. It was fun watching the kids grow up again and reading the story behind some of her story lines. If you like this comic strip, I would definitely recommend this book!
Some Things Keep Getting Better.......2005-11-20
Congratulations to Lynn Johnston on this milestone! Where so many other cartoonists have either quit the profession entirely (I'm thinking of the untimely demises of Calvin and Hobbes and The Far Side) or have publicly professed major cases of deep and lingering burnout (Gary Trudeau) Johnston continues to crank out the highest quality, most universally beloved strip on the comic pages. For Better Or For Worse has been there every day pretty much throughout my whole life, and I can't think of a time I haven't known about it and read it, even if in the early days it did involve me sounding out the words as I lay on the living room floor with my face about five inches off the page, liking the adventures of a refreshingly normal suburban family and trying my best to get some of the puns and inside jokes longtime readers so cherish. It's been something I've grown up with and come to count on among so many changes in this dynamic world. Really, For Better Or For Worse is much more than a comic strip and even more than "art" (although it certainly is that). As anyone who has marched thru life in these last decades and looked forward to the daily dose of the Patterson family can tell you, Lynn Johnston has done little short of opening a window that lets us peer into the goings-on of a group in some ways as meaningful and nearby as our real life neighbors and friends. Thanks, Lynn, and here's to the next twenty-five years!
Book Description
In her touchingly funny daily strip, Lynn Johnston gives her fans realistic characters who humorously deal with both the good and bad that life gives them. Every day, Johnston demonstrates-through hormonal children and parents who aren't always right-that life goes on For Better or For Worse. In Middle Age Spread, parents John and Elly have started to notice their own aging process: the increasing need for glasses, exercise, and computer skills. Their children are also growing older. Michael, the eldest, advances ever nearer to adulthood as he makes his way through college in a distant town, creatively managing classes, a grumpy landlady, and a special girlfriend. Daughter Elizabeth, with her contact lenses, short new hairdo, and boyfriend, Anthony, is becoming a young lady upon whom her parents increasingly rely. The youngest, April, along with the Patterson pets, Edgar the dog and Mr. B the bunny, provide welcome doses of comic relief. But Elly worries about her parents. Her mother has grown dangerously weak and is often bedridden With heartfelt authenticity and gentle humor, Johnston delicately describes a loving family whose life together speaks to the noble human spirit in all of us.

EXCELLENT, AS ALWAYS!.......2000-07-13
This is yet another wonderful book from a gifted storytellerwith an eye for realism and detail. I ... appreciate the growth anddevelopment of characters as opposed to the perpetual childhood of Dennis the Menace and the Archie Gang. Very few books have tastefully, gently and kindly dealt with the passing of a loved one the way this one does. (At one time, I was a little embarrassed to admit that I could be so moved by a comic, but now I'll freely admit that). It is truly a work of art and I love the way you can "suspend" reality by e-mailing the characters! I love the "interactive" forum of the strip and I really love the character of Jim, a savvy senior citizen who brings in some sharp insights. It is past time for seniors to get positive press and I'm glad to see it happen in this book! THREE CHEERS FOR THIS BOOK! END
Terrific.......1999-02-03
The Best book I have ever read in a long time.I have been reading the For Better or For Worse commic strip for the past two years. My mother is the one who got me hooked on it. What the Patterson family goes through with their kids, My parents go through the same thing. Exspecially my mother who has to put up with having her eldest child going to University and her youngest in college. The one good thing that my mother has is she only has to go through this twice.
I could actually put myself in Elly's shoes!.......1999-01-03
I've been reading the adventures of the Canadian Patterson family ever since Elizabeth was younger than her sister April is now. I love the way Lynn Johnston's characters grow up and develop...sure, it ensures the eventual end of the strip, but on the other hand I find it so much more interesting this way than characters that stay five-years old forever, like Dennis the Menace or the Peanuts.
I love comic strip collections. On the whole, they're cheaper than buying a year's worth of newspapers, and invaluable if you miss several issues.
In this particular collection, Elly and Phil's dealings with their aging parents hit a little close to home with me, as I and my brother find ourselves in a similar situation. It's uncanny because I experienced some of the guilt, helplessness, and frustration that were portrayed, and I felt a strange kinship with Elly Patterson. I mean, I, a middle aged, never-married Black American suddenly had something in common with a fictional Canadian housewife! I guess it goes to show there are some things we all go through at one time or another. I can think of no better comic than For Better or For Worse to help point that out.
Book Description
In Sunshine and Shadow, Johnston's approach again radiates truth, humor, and compassion as the Pattersons deal with the illness and death of Elly's mother. Readers mourn with the Pattersons as they gather for a loving tribute, wishing their cherished mother could be there with them. "You know what, Dad'" Elly says to her father. "I bet she was." The family also watches as life goes on: college student Michael's love life heats up and Elizabeth has begun the transformation into a young adult. Through it all, John and Elly raise their brood-Michael, Elizabeth, and April, as well as Edgar the dog-with a liberal mix of love and laughter. Heartwarming and humorous, the Pattersons give readers a reason to smile while emphasizing what's really important in life.

Loyal Follower.......2006-03-17
I have just about all the For Better or For Worse books. I haven't had a bad one yet.
The Pattersons deal with loss of a loved one.......2001-09-09
Dealing with death is never easy, but Lynn Johnston manages it with humor and tact. Grandma Marian died, and although sad, it was never morbid. I would recommend this book to someone dealing with loss, as it shows that letting go isn't easy, but it can be done.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!.......2000-07-11
Lynn Johnston is in a class by herself. She is by far and away the best illustrator and story teller ever to hit the funny pages. She's great! Her courage in portraying homosexuality, death, and adult themed issues, e.g. divorce and business is to be applauded. Her characters are all convincing and believable, and with the exception of obnoxious, spoiled April, truly delightful.
HATS OFF TO LYNN JOHNSTON!.......2000-07-11
This book is in a class by itself. Nobody in cartoon history has created such delightful (save for April with her fresh mouth) and believable characters. Nobody else has been brave enough to confont issues like breast exams, death of family members and loss of pets as well as homosexuality. It is a brave new look at a superior caliber of comics that is more than just a comic.
HATS OFF TO LYNN JOHNSTON!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!.......2000-07-08
I loved it! It was a very realistic, moving series of stripsthat dealt with death in a humane and compassionate as well asbelievable way.
The only negative comment I could make is that I just can't like April. I tried, but like a reader named becca71, I think April is a spoiled brat who is never disciplined and who goes out of her way to rile people. Although I don't approve of Jeremy's bullying tactics, April DID ask for it by singing that cruel song and for making obnoxious comments. I don't like the way poor Liz took the heat everytime bratty April got into something. I don't like the way April hogged the bathroom and impacted on Liz' time to get ready. I think April is a capital brat who has not a clue what "no" means and who is just a spoiled, silly, self-indulged little princess. Becca71 was right.
Book Description
After her marriage to Damien ended in disaster, Londoner Josie Flynn -- thirtysomething and single again -- is flying across the ocean to her American cousin's "big mistake" wedding. In her present "love stinks" frame of mind, the last person she expects to be seated next to on the flight is someone like Matt Jarvis. A recently divorced rock journalist, Matt is sensitive, good-looking, and remarkably attentive -- and before their plane touches down, Josie's smitten. So how can she hope to convince her cousin to cut and run when Josie is all ready to leap into love again -- with a stranger, no less, who might be just another Mr. Totally Wrong in Mr. Seductively Right's clothing?
The point is rendered moot, of course, once they deplane and she and Matt go their separate ways. After all, Josie's got prenuptial confabs to worry about and that dreaded lilac chiffon bridesmaid's dress to wear. But Dante himself couldn't have dreamed up the hell this wedding is proving to be -- and when her dream hunk reappears and throws himself into the mix, Josie finds herself wondering how she -- or any unattached modern woman, in fact -- can hope to survive the new romantic rules of the twenty-first century.
Already a bestseller in the U.K., Carole Matthews's For Better, for Worse is a deliriously droll, dead-on tale of marriage, sex, monogamy, and modern love.

all over the place.......2007-04-26
This book was a big disappointment. You spend the whole book waiting for the main characters to get back together, and you don't even really like them. If you're looking for a fun chic lit book, this is not it!
Sweet, Silly Fluff.......2007-02-27
Everything Carole Mathews writes is sweet, fun and more than a little silly, but "For Better, For Worse," one of her earlier efforts, outdoes itself.
Here is the story of very likeable Josie, whose bounder husband left her for "The Thing," e.g., another woman whose attributes are all physical. Josie has signed the final papers and is awaiting her ex-husband's signature when she flies "across the pond" to be a bridesmaid at her cousin Martha's wedding.
Matthews professes a great affection for Americans and New York in particular, and it shows in this very funny story of Josie's chance meeting on the plane with rock journalist, Matt, their subsequent and quick attraction, their inability to find one another again in the city, and all the ins and outs that follow each of their searches.
There's the uber crazy wedding (actually two of them, but I won't spoil the fun), an on-again, off-again attraction between Matt and the PR girl for a horrible young Boy Band, and all kinds of funny stuff in between.
Just a perfect Brit Lit piece of fluff; highly recommended.
Very light read........2005-11-13
It took me only a couple of days to read this book. It completely pulled me in and I didn't want to stop reading till I find out what is going to happen and who she is going to end up with. I really liked it. Very easy and quick read. Quite relaxing too.
Guilty pleasure.......2005-10-19
Two words come to mind after finishing this book: guilty pleasure. I know perhaps I shouldn't have loved this book (just like I'm probably not supposed to love the movie French Kiss). But I did anyway.
Josie Flynn is just starting to get over the betrayal of her soon-to-be-ex-husband, Damien-who, six months ago, got up one morning, packed his bags, and told her he'd fallen in love with someone else. So Josie has every reason to be less-than-ecstatic about flying from London to New York for her favorite cousin's wedding to some mystery man she just met.
On the plane, Josie meets Matt Jarvis, a recently-divorced rock journalist who's headed to New York to interview a new band. Matt and Josie find that they have a lot of bitterness in common-and they begin to form a connection that continues to grow as the two spend the day together. But that night, circumstances cause Matt to unintentionally leave Josie waiting in a Mexican restaurant alone. He's determined to find her back and make it up to her-no matter what it takes.
Meanwhile, Josie's ex has decided that he doesn't want to sign the divorce papers-because he needs the support (and the clean socks) that Josie gives him. So he hops on a plane to New York to get her back.
For Better, For Worse is a soap opera of a romantic comedy in book form. It's outrageously unrealistic and just a little bit predictable, but it's cute and amusing at the same time. Matthews writes with perfectly dry British wit, which only makes the story all the more entertaining. It's a quick read that you'll be reluctant to set aside until the characters have all collided and the dust has settled.
Wrong couple???.......2005-09-19
I have to admit that I did like the book, in terms of the writing style. However, the ending was so abrupt and unbelievable. I wanted to know what happened with their relationship after those first five minutes back together. Also, I think Matt should have ended up with Holly, since he spent more time with her than the heroine of the book! Are we really supposed to believe that he's in love with Josie after everything he did with Holly?!?! You can probably tell that I was annoyed by this book A LOT, but it was funny!
