Book Description
Jay Quinn, who memorably explored gay families in
Back Where He Started (Alyson Books, 2005) directs his ever-sharpening eye over the enormous cultural shifts playing across the hedges in American society on two families in a manicured upscale suburban south-Florida neighborhood.
Austin Harden is downsized when the dot.com bubble bursts, earning less than his wife Meg, who recently made partner in her law firm. He is spending much of his time shuttling his two sons between school and soccer practice. Rory Fallon, whose partner Will has his career on the fast-track, feels increasingly stranded and isolated in their elegant and echoing home. Living next-door to each other, the two couples form a close friendship, particularly Austin and Rory, who share a growing sense of dislocation and the sense that their lives have gone off track and they aren't sure how or why.
The Good Neighbor explores concepts of success, masculinity, ambition, and sexuality in a way that shines a new light on how we define ourselves by them, while allowing them to define us. As the relationships among the four adults evolve, and take on surprisingly complex emotional and sexual overtones, the placid suburban facade cracks open to reveal something more primal and urgent.

will this writer improve.......2007-08-20
I really enjoyed the first book of mr. quinn that I read, METES AND BOUNDS. it was a little uneven in structure, but overall I felt is had some depth and held promise. however, with each successive novel by mr. quinn, I find myself increasingly disappointed. THE GOOD NEIGHBOR is easily his most simplistic piece of writing, sometime sophomoric, sometimes preachy, it never really explores the depth of any internal conflict for its protagonist
Don't Trust Amazon Reviews.......2007-07-30
After seeing all the 4 and 5 star reviews on Amazon, I thought, "why not, I'll read it and see." But as someone who reads profusely and minored in English Lit. in college, this is one of the worst-written books I have ever read. There was so much potential, but not much came of it. No one in the book is likeable: Rory is whipped and dumb, Bruno is a total jerk, Meg is a pain, and Austin is confused and stays that way. The only characters I liked are Meg and Austin's two young boys, who we don't see enough. This book couldn't have ended fast enough for me. If you want to read something great, try some Paul Russel, Alan Hollinghurst, or Edmund White.
Marriage Is Marriage?.......2007-05-21
You'll find yourself inside this story, which compares traditional marriage to same sex marriage. It's a perfect beach read.
The Good Neighber = An Excellent Read!.......2007-02-08
Outstanding character studies, dialog, situations, and downright believability. It was easy to insinuate oneself into the story and become a partaker/present observer.
Easy vacation read ..........2007-01-05
Oh, it is so true ... men do think with their groins. The author was able to paint a visual read on several pages that encouraged me to not put the book down. I enjoyed the lite read while relaxing on the beach.

This book is very adorable and follows the movie well. If you like the movie you will like the book.
Great Book If Your Kid Loved The Movie.......2007-01-04
The book pretty much follows the story of the movie and is full of movie photos. It's a bit long for a childs book, but my kid loves it and we read it every night.
So if you're kids love the movie and want to see it over and over again, buy and read them the book instead.

Sweet and sexy!.......2007-09-18
Blushing and cute uke, confident and cool seme, this is what we like in our Yaoi. The plot is delightful, light and "angsy", the artwork pretty. The sex, when they get to it is just plain naughty and delighfully erotic. Naughty and hot words too. A great one for my collection.
Sweet yaoi.......2007-09-07
This is a great book for all yaoi lovers. It has a traditionally shy and uncertain uke with a bolder, confident seme. Hokuto, the seme in this relationship, is somewhat pushy, but his underlying feelings for Yukito, the uke, make this a must-read for yaoi lovers everywhere. The story is rich and interesting while the love-scenes are hot, engaging, and just plain sweet. I found this work enjoyable from beginning to end, and Kazuka Minami's style is soft and beautiful. A must read!
Great Yaoi!!.......2007-08-31
I love Kazuka Minami! her beautiful boys and hot sex scenes never cease to amaze me. I remember reading this manga 2 years ago, a good start for an amateur. I was so excited and happy to know that one of my favorite mangaka's works has been licensed. I hope to see more yaoi manga like this one!

Customer Reviews:
extended tom and jerry episode.......2007-09-18
Basically my title says this. Reading this book was like reading 200 pages of transcript for a Tom and Jerry cartoon. People are maniacally out to get each other, for no good reason. There's no real character development, which makes their actions entirely unbelievable. Reading this book was incredibly frustrating. I actually didn't laugh at all, and I love to read comedies. For every night I was reading this (only to get it done for my bookclub) I dreaded going to bed, because I would have to slog through a few more pages with no purpose.
Unbelievable.......and not funny.......2007-01-15
This book was selected for my book club, and I was looking forward to the read. Initially, I was drawn in to the story and couldn't put it down. After about 75 pages of craziness, I expected some reality to ground the story, and it didn't happen. After 180 pages of non-stop, increasingly unbelievable behavior, and no connection whatsoever with any of the characters, I did what I've never done with a book before - went to the last 5 pages to have it over with already. I don't recommend this book.
Neighbors you can't believe in .......2006-07-11
I'm fairly tolerant with fiction, but Neighbors by Thomas Berger is a waste of time and money; I tried twice to read it, but couldn't. Basically, it's silly, just preposterous. The plot points occur so rapidly and with so little regard to plausibility that it reminded me of an old drawing-room comedy from the 1930's, only condensed and spruced up as a television sit-com. If an author creates neither compelling characters who are believable within his fictional parameters, nor a plot to hold my interest, I put the book down after about 70 pages, which is what happened with Neighbors. Don't bother with it.
Funny but made me squeamish!.......2005-02-24
This is a book that gives us despicable characters in the raw, with such embarrassing moments I felt a little squeamish as I read it. Yet it is undeniably funny and well written, a truly wonderful novel.
Much more rich than the screen version, this book gives us four characters who don't seem to understand each other at all, yet must live next door to each other as new neighbors.
Somewhat different stylistically from movie.......2004-10-16
If you're like me you were introduced to the world of Thomas Berger through the movie adaptation of "Neighbors" which featured John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd in one of the most ingenious casting decisions of all time. Perhaps it's because I have such fond memories of the film (believe me, I had a long history with it before ever coming to the book) that I was somewhat alarmed at the book's tone.
Both versions have Earl and Enid living peacably in outer suburbia when Harry and Ramona move suddenly into the only other house occupying their street. What ensues is a comedy of manners in which Harry and Ramona make life hell for Earl (Enid emerges strangely unscathed) all the while playing dumb and rebounding the blame back in Earl's court.
You see, in the movie the ridiculous humor is played more or less strictly for laughs, and in my opinion it's one of the finer black comedies of all time (but then, I have a soft spot for compressed little films that have a wealth of material all occurring during one eventful night - ie. American Graffiti, After Hours, Dazed & Confused, etc). Berger's source novel, on the other hand, plays it a little bit more straight, and in fact hints not too subtly that a great deal of the mischief may be entirely a figment of Earl's imagination. This is all fine and well but Berger seems to take it a bit over the top at times. In particular, Enid and (later) their daughter Elaine seem to be picking on Earl and choosing sides against him more or less at random. Similarly, the ending goes for a Kafkaesque (circa "The Trial") bit of nihilistic mayhem that is unconvincing, insofar as similar incidents had been played out throughout the novel without the extreme response scripted in here. This is all the more disappointing considering the more or less realistic repartee between Earl and the Harry/Ramona tangent. Ultimately Harry has not had to prove his manhood for many a year (if ever) and it's this fatal flaw that makes his failures all the more tragically heroic. I still feel the movie managed to smooth out a few of the more incongruous plot points, but the novel is still an engaging read even after all these years.
Book Description
Before Road Trip, before Barry Ween, there was Frumpy the Clown! And hey, isn't it true that every child wants his or her own clown? Forget ponies and puppy dogs and hamsters, a clown is the true prize. And not the creepy kind that's gonna freak you out and make you soil your shorts either, but a chain-smoking, cynical, anarchist clown who's more interested in sticking it to the stuffed-shirt establishment than getting a job or focusing on the finer points of personal hygiene. When Frumpy enters the home of a typical American family, the children, Brad and Kim, are ecstatic. Their parents, neighbors, and local law enforcement, on the other hand, wish he would go away.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Family Fun.......2004-07-21
I've been reading comic strips since I was six years old, and not since Calvin and Hobbes have I seen a "family" style strip that can still make me laugh as a somewhat jaded teenager. Frumpy the Clown is irreverent, sweet, and maybe a little too smart for the comic page. Highly recommended.
Social commentary with laughs........2002-05-27
I picked up this collection for two reasons. One, I really enjoyed Barry Ween, Boy Genius, which is also by Judd Winick. Two, I was working off of a friend's recommendation. Since he's the one who steered me to the aforementioned Barry Ween, I figured it was a safe bet.
And indeed it was.
As described in the back cover blurb, Frumpy is not your typical clown. He isn't jolly. He isn't ... clownish. Instead, he is a cynical, chain-smoking, vegetarian (though, this seems to waver), animal-loving, motorcycle-riding clown. And, don't forget, a favorite of every child he encounters. "Sure, of course they like him. He's a clown," you might say. But that isn't it. Kids love Frumpy because Frumpy remembers that they are people, perhaps a bit on the short side, but people nonetheless.
There are plenty of antics in this comic, both on the part of Frumpy and on the part of the children, but there are also great human moments to remind you that not only is Frumpy not your typical clown, this isn't your standard rambunctious kids comic.
(Not to say there isn't plenty of rambunctious kid action. I promise you, there is.)
A great read, though you might want to be careful about giving this to a precocious child, as there are entirely too many pranks in the comic, which might plant seeds of ideas. =)
Hilarious but shortlived.......2001-08-14
Judd Winick is perhaps the funniest man in comics. Of course, he's not creating strips anymore, but during the two year run of Frumpy the Clown, he made me laugh harder and more frequently than most every other cartoonist has in my twenty-odd years. Frumpy can be poignant, and pointed, but most of all, Frumpy can be hilarious. Don't read it while drinking milk.
A great story about two kids and their clown.........2001-02-23
Who would've thought that all of this creativity would come from the black hole of TV called "The Real World"? Don't be fooled, dear reader. This collection of Judd Winick's discontinued syndicated newspaper dailies is surprisingly funny with an underlying subversive flavor. The art may look like an amalgam of various other strips that are in the Funnies today but contains an original flair that gives it familiar warmth. I think that Judd's humor and deft hand is on par with the other great daily strip creator of his generation, Frank Cho (Liberty Meadows). Hopefully with this collection as well as others (Barry Ween, Road Trip, Pedro & Me), Judd will be known as a comic book writer/artist and not that lovesick dweeb from a reality TV show in San Francisco.
Two words...Chocolate Lard!.......2001-02-22
If you have read Frumpy the Clown, you get the subject line for this review. If not, you need to buy this book and read it immediately! Frumpy the clown is one of the funniest things that I have read in recent years, but be warned, this comic has the capacity to make you pass out from laughing so hard that you can't breathe. How do I know you ask? Because it nearly happened to me. One word of warning: If you are a political or social conservative who takes themselves too seriously, avoid this book as you will hate a great many of the political and social comments that it makes. Also, while the strip is hilarious more often than not, it also can get INCREDIBLY sappy! We're talking family circus level sappy here :) But, if you are a political and social liberal who can stand a bit of sap, then you MUST own this book.
Book Description
Peter Straker lives in a converted lighthouse on the Devon coast with a fine view of the sea, two cats, and no neighbors. That's just the way he likes it. He speaks to no one except in his dreams, where he converses with some of the seventy-eight people he believes he killed nearly a quarter-century earlier -- though he can't quite remember how it happened. But Straker's carefully preserved solitude is about to be invaded by Imogen Doody, a prickly and unapproachable school caretaker with a painful history herself. Against his will -- and hers -- Straker soon finds himself helping Imogen repair the run-down cottage she's inherited. There are forces gathering, however, as the twenty-fifth anniversary of Straker's crime approaches, and they're intent upon disturbing his precarious peace.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you, Ms Morrall, for your perseverance. I eagerly await more!.......2007-01-05
After reading Clare Morrall's 'Astonishing Splashes of Colour', which was fantastic, I was thrilled to see this second novel published so soon. I will not review the story line of 'Natural Flights'; you can read a great report already submitted by reviewer [..]on this Amazon site. I will simply say that Clare Morral wrote 4 unpublished novels before these two were published. Someone needs to take a serious look at the others and see if they warrant publication, too. Ms Morrall is a gifted writer and I'd like to thank her for her amazing perseverance. I eagerly await her next book.
A novel with a bit of everything.......2006-08-14
Peter Straker lives alone in a lighthouse on the Devon coast. But his mind is full of the voices of 78 people who died in a train wreck almost 25 years ago. Peter feels responsible; he is sure he caused their deaths but isn't certain how. In the lighthouse, as the coast tears away at the shore, he hears their voices, accusations and sometimes even their kindness. Peter lives like a hermit, going to town only for food and supplies and talking to no one. But the arrival of Imogen Doody forces him out of his exile and back into the world of the living.
Clare Morrall's sophomore effort, following ASTONISHING SPLASHES OF COLOUR (a Booker Prize finalist) centers on Peter and Imogen as they navigate a tenuous and emotional relationship that makes each deal with their tragic past and their hopes for the future.
Imogen, or "Doody," is a school caretaker, an angry woman with no friends and a strained relationship with her family. She discovers she has inherited a cottage on the Devon coast from a godfather she never knew. The cottage is a dream come true, a place to be alone with her thoughts and perhaps even finish the novel she half-heartedly has been working on. But the cottage is also a disaster, abandoned and decrepit, and she has neither the money nor the know-how to fix it up. It is her activity in the cottage that attracts Peter, and he talks with his first living person in years when he meets Doody. Her anger flashes again and again and he retreats to his lighthouse again and again, but they eventually come to something of a truce and begin to work on the cottage together.
Over time they open up to each other and discover that both were emotionally scarred and damaged 25 years ago --- Peter with the train wreck and Doody when her husband abandoned her never to be heard from again. Could the events be related? And why does the discovery that Doody has also inherited a small plane make Peter so upset? What happened to Doody's husband, and what happened when Peter last flew a plane almost 25 years ago?
Although Morrall's book is not a mystery, these questions and others haunt the narrative as they do the characters.
NATURAL FLIGHTS OF THE HUMAN MIND is a beautiful, thoughtful and thoroughly successful novel. Morrall's characters seem and act real; while the foundational events are quite extraordinary, Peter and Doody are just normal people who are lonely and guilty and more than a little afraid of relationships and the future.
Morrall's prose is lovely and quite readable. This is serious stuff without being heavy, and character-driven without being dull. And there is resolution without easy answers or clichés. This is also a novel that is creative in its description and use of setting. The lighthouse seems to be crumbling along with the shore as Peter explores the truth of his responsibility and the world at large intrudes upon his solitude. Doody must clear away the years of misuse to find the beauty and functional space in the cottage.
Guilt, grief, family, forgiveness, tragic pasts, drama, an unforgettable setting and uniquely drawn characters --- this novel has it all.

Great Read.......2007-07-24
This was a great book. Interesting storyline and plot and I think Ms. Griffin did a great job with the storyline and the characters. This isn't a book full of drama so if you are looking for tons of crazy family issues and drama, this is the wrong book and you will be disappointed. If you are interested in a good read about a family dealing with a crazy and probably not so unique situation, than this is the book for you.
