5 out of 5 stars Great Food and Still Losing Weight!.......2007-05-22

This cook book is wonderful! Recipes are easy and taste really good. Friends have said "I thought you were on a diet" after eating a holiday or special occasion meal with us. I tell them I am still ona diet and have this wonderful cookbook with meal ideas and recipes that makes a person think otherwise!

5 out of 5 stars South Beach Diet over Christmas.......2007-04-01

If you've found it hard to keep to a diet plan during Christmas or Thanksgiving, this book will solve your problems. Easy and delicious recipes based on the South Beach diet.

5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas for Holidays and Gatherings!.......2007-03-15

The South Beach Diet may have revolutionized how we eat, but when it comes to entertaining, most of us fall back into old food habits. Now there's a no-brainer way to entertain, with recipes and menus that can satisfy the most skeptical guests. Really a winner, and easy to use.

5 out of 5 stars Something that FINALLY works!.......2007-01-20

As long as you have the determination to "stick with it" and lose weight, this program, and this book, will make getting there a breeze! How tough can it be to stay on a diet, when you're allowed to eat all kinds of delicious, "sinful" foods??? For the first time in my life, I am 2 pounds lighter than before the holidays started; and, I didn't have to give up the joy of eating... I highly recommend this book and the program it represents. Recipes are not difficult and the results are most rewarding. Furthermore, you cannot beat the price at Amazon and the book was in my house, two days after I placed the order...

5 out of 5 stars Best Cookbook I Have Ever Bought!.......2007-01-16

This is the first cookbook I have bought where I can see myself actually trying every recipe in it. Dr. Agatston has broken the book into specific holidays and events (Easter, Thanksgiving, Football parties, showers, etc.), but of course feel free to mix and match recipes based on what your preferred tastes are. The recipes that I have tried so far have been easy and delicious. The best part is at the end of every recipe, he tells you what you can prepare ahead of time, from hours before your event to days before your event. Each recipe is labeled as to which phase of the South Beach Diet it pertains, just as in his other books. This cookbook is too good to save just for holidays and parties. I'm planning on using it year-round for my family's everyday meals.

Book Description

Friends and life. Life and friends. The two are so tightly interwoven it's impossible to imagine one being remotely worthwhile without the other. As Bradley Trevor Greive points out, "There are very few truly solitary creatures on this planet. And most of them have serious personal hygiene issues." What makes friends so special? What does our choice of friends say about us? What sparks the best friendships and keeps them burning? In Friends to the End: The True Value of Friendship, BTG uses his trademark witty narrative illustrated with irresistible animal photos to explore the daily magic we experience through our friends. Best described as a cross between his famously successful Dear Mom and The Blue Day Book, Friends to the End examines themes such as why we can't live without friends, how great friendships grow from humble beginnings, how to identify different types of friendship, what to do when good friends turn bad, and why it's all so worthwhile. "When I think back to all the really great or the horrendously bad times in my life," says BTG, "I can't help but think about how my friends made the former all the more enjoyable and the latter at least survivable. I want this book to help people appreciate friendship for all it is and all it can be."Friends to the End promises to have the same cultural impact achieved by his previous books. His modern classics The Blue Day Book and Dear Mom have been New York Times best-sellers and made the author a household name in more than 35 countries. BTG's seven previous volumes have sold more than seven million copies worldwide.

Book Description

What's the quickest way to ruin a friendship? Do great friendships have anything in common? Are close friendships in the workplace such a bad thing?

These are just a few of the questions that #1 New York Times bestselling author Tom Rath asked when he embarked on a massive study about the impact of friendships. Along with several leading researchers, Rath pored through the literature, conducted several experiments, and analyzed more than 8 million interviews from The Gallup Organization's worldwide database.

His team's discoveries produced Vital Friends, a book that challenges long-held assumptions people have about their relationships. And the team's landmark discovery - that people who have a "best friend at work" are seven times as likely to be engaged in their job - is sure to rattle the structure of organizations around the world.

Drawing on research and case studies from topics as diverse as management, marriage, and architecture, Vital Friends reveals what's common to all truly essential friendships: a regular focus on what each person is contributing to the friendship - rather than the all-too-common approach of expecting one person to be everything.

The book includes a unique ID code that provides access to the Vital Friends Assessment and website. This groundbreaking test reveals which friends play each of the eight vital friendship roles in your work and life.

Tom Rath's fast-paced and inviting storytelling takes a mountain of important research and makes it remarkably accessible and applicable. By the time you finish reading Vital Friends, you'll see your coworkers, family, friends, and significant other in a whole new light.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read, not lots of depth.......2007-08-14

In Vital Friends, Tom Rath makes two main points.

* One is that having friends at work is very beneficial to the employer. With a best friend at work, you are much more likely to be productive. Without a best friend at work, there's only a 1 in 12 chance you'll feel engaged! With three good friends at work you are 96% more likely to be extremely satisfied with your life. (All the numbers are from a Gallup poll.)

* The second point he makes is that you can't expect all your friends to be all things to you. He says different friends fullfill different needs and describes the different types of friends:

o Builders
+ Motivators and coaches
+ They push you
+ They know our strengths
+ They provide moral support
o Champions
+ Stand up for you
+ Sing your praises
+ "Thrive on your accomplishments and happiness"
o Collaborators
+ Share similar interests, ambitions and passions
+ Do a lot with you
o Companions
+ Always there for you
+ Make sacrifices for you
+ First person you call
o Connectors
+ Always introduce you to others
+ They seem to "know everybody"
o Energizers
+ Your "fun friends"
+ Make good days, great
+ People you call to have a good time or to relax with
o Mind Openers
+ Ask good questions
+ People you share ideas and express yourself outloud with
o Navigators
+ Give advise
+ Steer you
+ Share dreams and goals

Interestingly, he says that in friendships we don't play the same role to each other. So you might be a mind opener to your friend and your friend might be a champion for you.

This book was an easy and interesting read. You can easily read it in a day. (I read it on a two hour plane ride.) However, I would have liked a lot more detail and depth.

5 out of 5 stars Friends--- More Than Just a "Good Idea".......2007-07-20

I've heard of good friends, close friends, old friends, casual friends, best friends, even "just" friends, but I had never heard the word "vital" to describe friends until this book. And that is exactly what Tom Rath proceeds to explain, that having friends, real, meaningful engaged relationships, is absolutely vital to our health, our well-being, and our personal and professional success. Not "a good idea" or "important" but actually "vital"- absolutely necessary.

He starts the book by stating that so much of the focus on personal and professional success is on self-improvement. But is that really the key? His answer is, "The energy between two people is what creates great marriages, families, teams, and organizations." In fact, his first chapter is entitled, "Who Expects You to be Somebody?" where he wisely observes that it is almost always the influence of meaningful people in our lives that drives us to achievement.

The second chapter, "The Energy Between," discusses how, "Focusing on the individual is too narrow -- and focusing on the entire group is too broad. The real energy occurs in each connection between two people, which can bring about exponential returns." His next chapter, "Better than Prozac?" cites some interesting research, including a Duke University study showing people with less than four close friends had more than double the risk of heart disease.

The most helpful concept he develops in the book is that of "the rounding error" in chapter 5. It is easy, he says, to expect a friend to be "well rounded"-- in other words, to be good at everything: inspiring us, being a companion to us, giving us an energy boost, expanding our horizions, and a dozen other different things. This often subconscious expectation is both unrealistic (no one person can meet all our relationship needs) and a potential relationship killer, both in friendships and in romance and marriage.

In a similar vein, he warns us of expecting friendships to be "reciprocal." In other words, I may be an energizer to my friend, but he may be a mind opener for me. Expecting to receive the same of what I give to a friend again is both unrealistic and a potential relationship killer. I surmise that is why the Duke health research found that it takes at least four close friends-- because different people will speak different things into your life, and you need different kinds of friends to have well-balanced friend "nutrition" for your soul, just as you need different foods from different groups to give your body what it needs.

The second part of the book goes into more detail about the vital importance of friends at work, citing both anecdotes and research. The final part of the book more fully develops his system of eight vital friendship roles:

Builder
Champion
Collaborator
Companion
Connector
Energizer
Mind Opener
Navigator

He discusses how these roles differ and how to develop these roles both in your life and in the lives of your friends. The book also gives you an access code to a website where you can take a survey to help classify your own friends as to the roles they play in your life.

I realized the importance of my friends before I picked up this book. But after reading Vital Friends, I had more appreciation of my friends, new insights into the nature of our friendships, and greater skills & determination to develop our friendships further.

5 out of 5 stars Why network?.......2007-07-17

The bookstore shelves are filled with books about "networking" which cover how to meet more people and not alienate them too much, and possibly how to have them help you get a job. This book is a leap above the usual networking books by discussing the different ways that people can be helpful to your life. It divides relationships into eight categories (potentially limiting but also useful...you've got to start somewhere). It tells you how to identify each type, what each group can do for you, how to find more of this type, and how YOU can be one of them (which beats a million vague exhortations that "networking is a two-way street"). The research is focused on "business friendships" but can easily be extended to purely business relationships as well as social or even family ones. Basically, this book takes networking from "what" and "how" to "who" and, most importantly, "why?"

3 out of 5 stars Thinking about friends.......2007-05-28

My book club read Vital Friends last week. The men responded well to it; the women seemed lukewarm. All of us liked the book's values.

Rath's survey study reveals surprising connections between productivity and policies promoting friendship at work. Rath also developed a structure for analyzing dynamic components common among friends, a structure available on-line.

Our book club men found the analysis especially revealing when applied to their personal lives. Our women were less inspired, perhaps because thinking about friendship was not such uncharted territory.

I liked Vital Friends much better after talking about the issues it raises. The bottom line: thinking aloud about friendship is important to both private and public well-being.

Book Description

You're right to be cautious when you hear these words:
"I'm telling you, we're just friends."

Good people in good marriages are having affairs. The workplace and the Internet have become fertile breeding grounds for "friendships" that can slowly and insidiously turn into love affairs. Yet you can protect your relationship from emotional or sexual betrayal by recognizing the red flags that mark the stages of slipping into an improper, dangerous intimacy that can threaten your marriage.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not "Just Friends".......2007-10-05

My husband had an affair with a co-worker for about a year and I just found out on July 1st of this year. The devastation felt was overwhelming and you cannot think straight nor understand the why of the entire thing. This book gave me a road map to understanding my husbands actions and weakness since we have been married for 30 yrs and he never did anything like this before. We had a happy and relatively good marriage so that made it more difficult to understand. It has helped both my husband and I to overcome the guilt, shame, anger and hurt that a betrayal of this type brings to a so called "Happily Married Couple." We are on the road to recovery and are closer and more intimate than we have been in years.

I hightly recommend this book to anyone who has been unfaithful or has been betrayed.

5 out of 5 stars Not 'just friends'.......2007-09-20

This book literally has saved our marriage. i read it and resumed some dignity from what I read, and my husband read it and is aware of the mistakes he has made and not even aware of it. Excellent book to read, before you decide to walk out that door.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2007-09-07

I appreciate this book so much. Shirley Glass sure knows her stuff. I went through a nightmare of grief, feeling like my whole world had shattered this summer when I found out that my husband had been keeping secrets, having numerous emotional affairs during the past few years and a porn obsession. After giving his emotional energy to others and his sexual energy to porn, he had absolutely nothing left over for me, and our marriage of 26 years nearly ended. I no longer felt safe in the relationship and felt like I was going crazy. We're trying to get our relationship back on track and this book has been very educational and helpful in understanding infidelity, why affairs happen, how to prevent them from happening, and what to expect afterward. It was reassuring to know that I wasn't crazy--that the whirlwind of grief, anger, and other volatile emotions I was feeling was normal in the aftermath of such a betrayal. There is also a section on healing that I've found very helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered from an unfaithful spouse.

4 out of 5 stars it's good-bye.......2007-07-03

This is an excellent read for a person who has experienced a heart-breaking end to a relationship. Most of what is written is common sense but too often common sense flys out the window when a person is involved in a highly-charged, emotional break-up. I believe the book would benefit both men and women but I think it will draw its largest readership from women.

5 out of 5 stars Stability, Hope and Self-Love When Your Mind is Spinning .......2007-06-18

I am a very private person, even in my pain. However, the help this book provided me in the time of my crisis was irreplaceable and as I feel there may be others who are experiencing what I experienced or have gone through the pain of either emotional or sexual infidelity with their partners, my need to praise and review this book went beyond me and my need for privacy in order to possibly help someone else. From cover to cover it was as if Dr. Glass was reading my mind, the mind of my spouse, had already anticipated his and my actions and was uncovering the layers of the betrayal partner with precision, which as I unearthed more information, shined clear through like an xtray into her character and actions. This book helped me to calm my mind and spirit and understand the many angles that are created to birth the possibility of an affair into existence. My husband and I suffered some set backs, mostly related to the aspect of "lies of omission" and/or our being separated for four months, but Dr. Glass' book was with me and later us(he later agreed to read the book) each step with timely precision. Although it has been over three years since the disclosure of my spouse's emotionally intimate betrayal, which itself lasted for almost three years, I still find solice in Dr. Glass' work when "triggered" by certain reminders or behavior in myself or from my husband. She was a definite godsend to me at a time I thought my implicit trust was my own undoing. I literally cried when I found out she had passed. I felt her work blessed me that much. After 15 years of marriage, both I and my husband attempt to be vigilent in using many of the ideas and suggestions Dr. Glass puts forth in her book to maintain proper "windows" and "walls" with regards to our opposite sex relationships/friendships. Yes, it takes time to heal, learn to love your partner again and refocus on your relationship/marriage if it is truly what you want. I would also recommend this book as a gift to newly married couples or those embarking on an agreed long-term committed relationship. Lastly, as I recently learned the betrayal partner in my saga married just this year, I can only say that I hope if by chance she reads this, she has grown with integrity and has come to understand what it will take to keep her marriage safe, close and loving. Be forewarned, you(SBRDP)do not ever want to experience the pain and hurt which you caused me and my family not so long ago. ASE

1 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time and money.......2007-01-04

I bought this book on the strength of several other reviews and its rating, but I don't think I have ever been so disappointed in a book in my life. This should be titled, "The Absolute Moron's Guide to Conversation". There is nothing in here that anyone with the most rudimentary social skills doesn't already know.

Wow, I didn't know that I shouldn't call people when they are in a movie theater, or that discussing death is poor social etiquette at a party. And what isn't obvious is patently ridiculous.

I teach English conversation skills to non-native speakers and was hoping that I could find some tips that would help my students. Sadly, even my least skilled students would find this book far beneath them.

I recommend you not buy this book or cd. I listened to the CD and it was too elementary.

5 out of 5 stars Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-03-29

I don't know what kind of verbal tight spots you find yourself in on a regular basis, but here's hoping not too many. As a political activist and writer who has been tagged by the media as "one of America's most controversial authors", I'm nearly always on the hot seat wherever I go, bathroom being about the only exception.

Gabor's book has performed equally well as a shield and a peace dove at the same time. He suggests that if you want to be a good conversationalist, you must first be a good listener. Think about that for a second. Naturally, if you really don't care what the other person thinks about you and your opinion, do as I used to do--just jump into the conversation without the slightest knowledge of the other person's beliefs and opinions. Talk about not winning friends and influencing people--that'll get the job done. Add to that the fact that most people won't tell you to your face that they think you're an obnoxious jerk; they just tell everyone else. This book will teach you how to ask closed and open-ended questions, and that alone is worth the price of the book.

5 out of 5 stars This book as taught us a lot!.......2007-07-13

I bought a bunch of books for my 4 year old son when I learned he was teasing the other kids at his preschool. This was one of them. He loves this book, and I notice that he has gotten so much better playing with other children since we started reading this book.

It has been so effective that I simply say "Jimmy, is that how you be a good friend?" when I feel he is being unkind, and he will answer me, using "good friend" examples from the book, and immediately change his behavior. He also tells other children how they can be "good Friends" too.

Unfortunatley, as he nears the age of being a "tattle tale", he is very quick to point out when other children aren't being "good friends" and tells them "You need to read Mommy's book." LOL

I highly recommend to any parent.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for Kids.......2007-02-22

I enjoyed the book. It will help my students become better friends with personal ideas and reasons.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT!.......2007-01-10

Reinforces the criteria and requirements that kids need to know to be a "GOOD" friend in easy to understand examples.

5 out of 5 stars A fun read!.......2007-01-04

I bought this book to find out how to help my 10 year old with some basic friendship issues. This book was VERY basic and geared for a younger child, but I feel that it is a great book for any parent. My daughter read it also and said that she thought it was very helpful, but a little too "kiddy" for her taste.

5 out of 5 stars Kid's Review.......2006-10-19

I actually give this book four and half stars. I liked it a lot and it had lots of good advice about how to be a good friend. It described how I feel when I feel shy. I am five and almost three quarters and my sister who is two liked it also.

I borrowed this book from a friend and really thought it helped me understand where my 3-year-old daughter was coming from. I agree with reviewers who said that it was more of a developmental awareness type of book, rather than a how-to-deal-with-your-kid book. If you want how-to, I recommend How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber. Anyway, I read over some of the negative reviews and felt that though I agree that the book was outdated, I think these people were excessively harsh. The authors do suggest that someone besides mom might have an easier time dealing with a 3 1/2 year old... but I read that as "help should be welcome at this age". They didn't ever suggest outright that you put your kid in all-day daycare and forget them. They suggest picking your battles (things that really mean a lot - like bathing, clothes, hairbrushing) and don't sweat the small stuff - like going back to close a door or making their bed just-so. I got from this book that the defiant age passes, and if you can get help during the tough times do it for your own sanity. My personal update - enlist dad to help. It's true that they treat dads as family police who just enforce rules. Realize that the book is outdated somewhat, but still has pearls of wisdom that do help understand what's happening with your child.

5 out of 5 stars It's a manual for three year olds.......2007-08-21

I find book very reassuring, especially during difficult times. I did the developmental test inside and I was comforted. It also has precise schedules when it's best to leave your child with a trusted caregiver and when to pay closer attention. The cycles of moods is just a life-saver. I would recommend it to first time mothers.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the worrisome parent.......2007-06-27

I have a VERY active 3-year-old little girl. I've always been troubled by making sure she's operating within the normal parameters of her age. And this book certainly helped put my mind at ease. As many reviewers have said, this is not a book for people seeking parenting "advise" per se, but is excellent at outlining the typical range of behaviors for the age. As must have for the nervous parent

1 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Out of Date and Out of Touch.......2007-06-14

I was very disappointed in this book after hearing so many good things about the series. It is hopelessly out of date to the point that it offended me after only 10 pages. The book assumes that the father is this distant person with little to no involvement in parenting. I just don't think that's true any more for many families. To me this attitude just reinforces stereotypes that only mothers can be good parents. Bleh!

5 out of 5 stars Your 3 year old: Friend or Enemy.......2007-05-19

I too am shocked that there are people who don't like this book. Yes, some of the advice is outdated, but the general behavioral info is spot on. I've looked for more updated information on behavior and advice & have found none to compare with providing concise insight into the WHY of behavior. Just understanding why my child was acting a certain way put a whole new spin on how I deal with issues. The days that it seems my child turned into a stranger, I could say "ah ha!" this book told me this may happen. I do love, love, love this book & have recommended it over and over.

Book Description

Married to a convert herself, Anita Diamant provides advice and information that can transform the act of conversion into an extraordinary journey of self-discovery and spiritual growth.

Here you will learn how to choose a rabbi, a synagogue, a denomination, a Hebrew name; how to handle the difficulty of putting aside Christmas; what happens at the mikvah (ritual bath) or at a hatafat dam brit (circumcision ritual for those already circumcised); how to find your footing in a new spiritual family that is not always well prepared to receive you; and how not to lose your bonds to your family of origin. Diamant anticipates all the questions, doubts, and concerns, and provides a comprehensive explanation of the rules and rituals of conversion.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful book!.......2007-09-22

This is a great book. It explained a lot of things for me when I was contemplating conversion. After making my decision, I actually gave the book to my mom to help her understand my decision.
I highly recommend this book for anyone thinking about converting.

4 out of 5 stars Best for people who are converting because of marriage.......2007-09-15

This book reads well and eases fears about conversion. However, I think it is a better choice for those converting due to marriage.

4 out of 5 stars useful information.......2007-02-17

This book has a lot of useful information for conversion. The only drawback was that it was written for people converting for a partner who is Jewish. Not all people convert for this reason so it is not a one size fits all conversion book.

4 out of 5 stars 1st book.......2007-02-08

This is the first book on the "conversion process" I read. I know some people take issue with Diamant, but this book was a great introduction to the subject. It made the whole thing seem approachable and possible. It really helped me.

5 out of 5 stars Cannot be the only book you read...........2006-12-17

I give this book five stars but I want to say that it cannot be the only book a potential convert reads. The reason I give it such a high rating is because it is a nice primer for the process and how to deal with Christmas. Most people on their way to Jewry are told "okay, by the way, no more Christmas" but this book deals with how psychologically hard it can be to forfeit up something so engrained in the American psyche as Christmas.
The potential Jew must also get themselves an introduction to Hebrew, a good Tanakh, an introduction to Talmud (Everyman's Talmud is very good) and a good book on how to live an observant Jewish life (To be a Jew is good for this). Converts must also ask their rabbi if there is any other books the rabbi would like them to read.
This book is indespinsable because of how it clearly describes what a hafat dam brit or mikvah are like and also the importance of a convert's Hebrew name. Many converts have no idea what a real mikvah will be like and I LOVE the way this book goes into it.
Overall I definately believe everyone going into Reform, Conservative or Reconstructionist Judaism should read this. It does have a very evident slant towards Reform but I find it WONDERFUL and I am most likely going to go through a conservative conversion.

5 out of 5 stars The Twelve Steps for Christians.......2007-05-14

I was very pleased that the book was written by a group that remained anonymous and that they kept very focused on maintaining the integrity of the original 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. This is not a Christianizing of the Steps. Rather it is the 12-Steps standing on their own, but cross validating the fundamental truths that are found in both Christianity and the 12-Steps. After all, the 10 Commandments and the 12-Steps have the same author. And that author is not Moses or Bill W. but a higher power God, that can free us from all of our various forms of self-will run riot.

Great product - Well worth the price - Has helped me understand addiction and the recovery process.

Have purchased many of this title for a prison Bible Study group I do volunteer work with. Although I haven't personally read it, the members of the study group speak highly of it and frequently request more copies.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool for Christians.......2006-05-30

As an educator and a therapist, I have recommended this book to my Christian clients/patients and students. My clients report that the book has enhanced their recovery as they can tie their Step work to Biblical teachings. My students, particularly those who are not in recovery but are learning about substance abuse, have reported that the text has given them a base from which to understand the Steps more deeply and allowed them to feel more comfortable about their ability to use the Steps in their ministries.

5 out of 5 stars The Twelve Steps for Christians.......2002-01-08

My husband and I previously read this book and were very impressed. We are both in recovery and were avid believers in Jesus Christ. All of the traditional recovery books were vague in their spirituality, and we could relate and grow from this book. We currently use this book in our ministry, which is a recovery ministry in our church. We see many other people being blessed from it as well. I think people that have not had to deal with different addictions/bondages in their lives, could benefit from the steps/tools that are available in this book!

The titular neighborhood of Frank Pellegrino's Rao's: Recipes from the Neighborhood is Manhattan's East Harlem, home to an Italian immigrant population. The area also boasts Rao's, Pellegrino's Southern Italian restaurant that was discovered by local "worthies" and is now New York City's toughest reservation. The book, a follow-up to the bestselling Rao's Cookbook, offers 125 recipes for the kind of fare offered Rao's, and by Pellegrino's extended family and neighbors--dishes like Pizza Rustica, Penne Rigate with Cauliflower, Veal Milanese, and My Mother's Stuffed Calamari. This deeply satisfying, utterly unpretentious cooking is easy to do, but must be handled with care to avoid debasing an already hybrid cuisine. The book scores in this, offering exemplary versions of Old-to-New World dishes, and is neighborhood-authentic down to the use of American convenience products like garlic powder. Readers will also relish the wide recipe range, which includes sweets such as Simple Ricotta Cheesecake and Noni's Chocolate Ravioli, as well as Pellegrino's headnotes, which reveal who made what when. (Of the contributor of Wedding Soup, for example, he says, "his grandmother and my grandmother ... both came to America in 1911 in the same ship.") This flavorsome background, plus homey photos and other memorabilia like Our Kitchen Table make this modest book particularly welcome. --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-01-09

I love this book! It brings me right back to Brooklyn, and reminds me so much of my roots. In our home there was always cooking, good food and lots of family and friends. These recipes are the same good cooking, simple Italian cooking to enjoy. I also have Rao's other cookbook which I also enjoy. Bought this for my son for Christmas and then had to get one for myself. Get this and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Can't put it down..........2006-03-21

This book completely revitalized my interest in cooking. I was growing tired of the highly complex, noveau recipes requiring obscure ingredients, and the end result was hardly worth the wait. Instead, these recipes accentuate the essence of Italian cooking - simplicity and quality ingredients. A great meal doesn't have to take all day to prepare and cook, and shouldn't require more than a handful of ingredients. Most of these recipes can be prepared with minimal effort after work and are great for family style cooking all week long, leaving great left-overs that only taste better with each re-heating. Cancel the magazine subscriptions and try this book. You will not be dissapointed with these recipes that haven't fallen short for over 100 years. Even the mediocre recipes are better than most.

4 out of 5 stars Rao's Recipes from the Neighborhood.......2005-08-26

If you love Italian food and love to cook, nothing beats the
Rao's cook books. The recipes in this book are quite simple and easy to follow and even a novice cook can make a great meal.

4 out of 5 stars A glimpse inside one of NYC's legendary eateries.......2004-12-20

Rao's has been a top eatery in New York City for decades. It's atmosphere was, is, and always will be a "rat pack" type of atmosphere, with a long line of people hoping for a seat to open up in one of the most intimate in-demand spots in the city.

Now, co-owner and actor Frank Pellegrino has put his restaurants' most popular dishes in book form, so that people crazy about traditional Italian fare can take a stab at making it themselves.

Boasting friends like actor Danny Aiello (who wrote the book's preface) and former New York Times food critic Mimi Sheraton (who wrote the forward), Pellegrino's book is part cookbook, part family album, as he takes a look at his childhood, his family, and the part that Rao's, owned then by his aunt and uncle Anna and Vincent Rao, played as he grew up around the neighborhood in it's East Harlem location.

The book is divided into chapters, each covering a specific type of food, and each is filled with family photographs, reminiscences from other members of his family and Frank's wide array of friends, as well as the recipes that made Rao's famous, sure to set the mouth watering. Some of the dishes Rao's is renowned for, such as Fettuccine Alfredo, boiled stuffed lobster, and the restaurants well-known homemade Marinara Sauce, are often less complicated than one tasting the dishes at the restaurant would probably believe. Each of those recipes, as well as all of the others, are explained in enough detail that it should be fairly simple to make near-Rao quality Italian fare in the average kitchen.

Although a bit pricey for its smallish size (a mere 197 pages), the book is nonetheless well worth it's price. The simple step-by-step instructions make this a great book for the beginning Italian cook, or for that matter, an experienced one as well.

If you're looking to take a stab at authentic Italian cuisine, New York Style, then look no further. Pellegrino offers up a cookbook filled with food, family, and style just too hard to resist.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Survey of Italian-American recipes. Pricy.......2004-12-18

`Rao's Recipes From the Neighborhood' appears to be a publication by restaurateur / actor Frank Pellegrino of his family's scant 196 page cooking scrapbook from the last two generations of the Rao / Pellegrino family which have lived in New York City, for a list price of $40 bucks a pop.

Before you get the notion that this is a cranky review of negatives and hit the `Not Influenced' button, let me say that this book really succeeds in giving us something interesting and useful, if not entirely new. It is certainly good enough to give it four stars, and the only thing keeping it from five is its relatively high price.

On the face of it, this appears to be a brand name rip-off, cashing in on the success of the restaurant, the original cookbook of restaurant recipes, and the Rao line of supermarket products. However, this book is not similar to other culinary publishing rip-offs such as the Alton Brown blank book and the Mark Bittman subdivision of his book into three booklets.

I will say that St. Martin's Press has used the lucre they expect to get for this price to good effect. The design of the book is crisp, the photography is good, all photographs are CAPTIONED and appear at an appropriate place in the text, and not much of the precious 196 pages are taken up with poorly written family stories.

The first thing to notice is that these are NOT recipes from the restaurant, Rao. They are recipes from Frank Pellegrino's friends and family labeled in a 72-point font with the name of the famous restaurant and forwarded by family friend and restaurant reviewer Mimi Sheraton, who put Rao's on the map with a three star rating in a New York Times restaurant review. So, this book is borrowing luster from the restaurant rather than serving as a promotion for same restaurant. The restaurant doesn't need the business, as I suspect not even Donald Trump or Bill Clinton could get a reservation at one of their eight (8) tables.

And, the recipes are really very good and most are exceptionally simple, but many are sophisticated when they have to be. This simplicity is all to a good cause, since the heart of the Italian genius with food is to create a pantry of exceptional ingredients, then don't mess them up. (Pellegrino does an homage to this principle in his introductory section on pantry items.) Sometimes, you can only appreciate this quality when you look at non-Italian interpreters such as London's River Café and Jamie Oliver. The simplicity really shines in recipes such as the Puttanesca sauce where the constant problem of not burning the garlic is solved simply with nary a need for a cautionary note by simply not adding the garlic until after the anchovies and olives have been added. As no ingredient is left out, I am hard pressed to believe this will taste any worse than the very fussy (but very good) version from `Cooks Illustrated' magazine.

When a cookbook is good, that quality usually shows itself on the first or second recipe and this book proves this rule. Even though this is a book of `Italian-American' recipes, the very first recipe is a perfect implementation of a classic unfussy Italian `Brodo di Pollo' which is made with coarsely chunked vegetables, is simmered for a scant hour and 15 minutes, and retains the poached chicken meat for some other purpose. The recipe even includes an optional enhancement I do not recall seeing elsewhere, with a thickening of the stock by adding a puree of the cooked carrots, leeks, and celery.

Another application of pure Italian culinary tradition is in the recipe for the wedding soup, where each green is carefully blanched separately, blanching water is saved as a later ingredient, cannellini beans are carefully pureed, and savories are gently sautéed, all before making the final assembly. Marcella Hazan could not have done it better. Aside from the opening chapter on soups, there are chapters on Salads; Egg Dishes; Pizza, Calzone, and Bread; Pasta, Rice, Polenta, and Sauces; Seafood; Chicken; Meats; Vegetables; and Desserts. While the bread chapter does not match the depth of understanding provided by a specialist's book by, for example, Peter Reinhart or Carol Field, it is really pretty good.

The biggest question one faces when considering getting this book is `Do I really need another Italian or Italian-American cookbook?' There is simply very little here which is new. I would definitely recommend this book in preference to Rocco DiSpirito's book he did with his mom. A perfect example is their Puttanesca recipes which Pellegrino does in 15 minutes with basic ingredients and which Rocco does in 20 minutes, needing a prepared sauce that takes additional time to make.

And, I would consider this book the equal to John Mariani's book as a source for `Italian-American' recipes (but without Mariani's excellent historical perspective and wine notes). It is also as good as `Eleanora's Kitchen' by Eleanora Scarpetta, and maybe just a touch better, as it is a choral work rather than just a solo effort. As a definitive presentation of `Italian-American' cuisine, it is not quite as good as Lydia Bastianich's excellent PBS series tie-in book. When I compare the Italian-American classic sausage and peppers from all books, I find Bastianich' version to be by far the most tasty (although I have a sneaky suspicion that her recipe has more to do with her northern Italian origin than it has to do with Mulberry street in Manhattan).

If you have no `Italian-American' cookbooks, this volume is an excellent purchase, especially if you can get a good discount.
