Book Description
The pricing of derivative instruments has always been a highly complex and time-consuming activity. Advances in technology, however, have enabled much quicker and more accurate pricing through mathematical rather than analytical models. In this book, the author bridges the divide between finance and mathematics by applying this proven mathematical technique to the financial markets. Utilising practical examples, the author systematically describes the processes involved in a manner accessible to those without a deep understanding of mathematics.
* Explains little understood techniques that will assist in the accurate more speedy pricing of options
* Centres on the practical application of these useful techniques
* Offers a detailed and comprehensive account of the methods involved and is the first to explore the application of these particular techniques to the financial markets

An online Errata would be nice.......2007-02-14
I found this to be a very good book. I think, though I could be wrong, that these are typos:
p. 50 3.258 Should be S=E*exp(x)
p. 51 3.279 Should be '+w(i-1,j)' not '-'
p. 61 4.32 Should be u(x,-525/23) instead of -523
p. 64 4.50 Should be a3 = -(163*a4 +3,200,000)/880
p. 66 4.75 and 4.75 should be a5*0.05^4 and a5*0.15^4 respectively instead of a4
p. 74 4.124 Should be (x^3 -4x) not (x^4-4x)
p. 74 middle of the page first 'L(u)=...a2*u...'
should be 'L(u)=...a2(x)*u...'
p. 100 formula (4.343) has to be '...ln(xmin/xmax))' for values in Table 4.9 to be correct.
I'm sure what Table 4.9 'First Exit Time' values represent and have not gone deeper into what is being done. I.e. time is not an input
parameter and the values returned aren't premium.
p. 105 It looks like the graph line for Figure 4.15(b) is missing unless it is the single right-hand vertical line near x=1.0. However it is the
small curved line near U= -0.0000.
p. 161 8th line should be 'see Definition 11 in Appendix A, not Definition 9
p. 177 above 6.48, 'All triangular elements in Figure 6.4...' not 6.5 ?
p. 181 to 183 I don't see Figure 6.10 referenced. Probably did not need to be but transform method did not seem to be explained.
p. 191 under (6.97) & 6.104 Where did 'b' come from ?
p. 191 6.103 and 6.104 should a3 and a4 be a1 and a2 ?
p.192 5th to last line should be 'The last two columns of Table 6.5...' not 6.2
p. 192 scale for Figure (6.15) is 'u-uritz (10^-3)' I assume that was just the result of a label in the code for generating the graph
p. 216 someone else mentioned the 'V' on the right side of (9.14)-(9.16) and time 't' valuations
don't seem right. [Another person pointed this out to me and] asked "what is the meaning of the variable/parameter 'V' on the
right side of these equations? I cannot find a reference to it (maybe it is described
somewhere ) but it might be the solution of the respective BS PDE in two factors. This means
when solving the 3d case we have to solve a 2d case on each face of the cube?" Later
The same person said "I think indeed that it is the solution of the 2d PDE case (just as the 2-factor
reduces to the 1-factor on the boundary). If this is so we must do a lot of computation; at each
time level we solve for the BCs (which are also PDEs)."
p. 221 before (10.5) should be 'Inserting...' not 'Integrating...'
p. 229 3rd to last line should be 'Equivalent .. Equation (10.49)...' not 10.50
p. 229 eq. 10.35 'H' in summation not defined. Stands for 'Holding Period' ?
p. 232 5th line should be 'Inserting ...equation 10.64' not 10.65
p. 234 line above 10.95 should be 'Inserting equation 10.91 not 10.90. Also sign changed from 10.91 to 10.92. Correct ? i.e. should 10.93 be +x*sigma^2 *d^2(v)/dx^2---which seems to change your argument
p. 245 eq (10.138) = 4.3638 [correct values for sigma_min]; what is (10.139) value of .55
<2.29 ? [2.29 is the FE value but the eq (10.138) is not the 0.55 [the wings at sigma_min and body at
sigma_max is .56---is this the 0.55 on line (10.139?].
p. 319 B.86 [y',p_sub(y')] should be [y',p]_sub(y') Sorry for the notation. _sub(y') means a
subscript on the variable shown, here on 'p' and '[...]' respectively.
p. 324 are equations B.131 and B.133 missing a division sign after c*sigma1 and sigma2 respectively ?
p. 349 for the Shreve entry it has 'Journal of Finance and Stochastics' instead of just 'Finance and Stochastics.' I think I've seen that for at least one other bibliographic entry.
p. 330 under Theorem 35, 'as defined in Definition 18...' is correct, not 'Definition 15'
p. 338 under C.56, should be '...positive definite (see Theorem 35)...' not 34.

There are some really sensational designs in this books.
Good but a lot of old and common patterns.......2007-03-11
I think this is a great first book, but if you've spent much time on the Internet getting patterns or bought more than a few books prior to this then you'll find a lot of repeated patterns in here. I guess that's where they got the "favorite" in the title - they're everyone's favorite free patterns elsewhere.

Book Description
"[Thorne Smith] created the modern American ghost. A ghost with style and wit. A ghost that haunts us still."
--The New York Times
Thorne Smith is a master of urbane wit and sophisticated repartee. Topper, his best-known work, is the hilarious, ribald comedy on which the hit television show and movie (starring Cary Grant) were based.
It all begins when Cosmo Topper, a law-abiding, mild-mannered bank manager, decides to buy a secondhand car, only to find it haunted by the ghosts of its previous owners--the reckless, feckless, frivolous couple who met their untimely demise when the car careened into an oak tree. The ghosts, George and Marion Kerby, make it their mission to rescue Topper from the drab "summer of suburban Sundays" that is his life--and they commence a series of madcap adventures that leave Topper, and anyone else who crosses their path, in a whirlwind of discomfiture and delight.
As enchanting today as it was when first published in 1926, Topper has set the standard in American pop culture for such mischievous apparitions as those seen in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Heaven Can Wait, Beetlejuice, and Bewitched.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and pioneering book.......2007-04-12
Topper is a fun story with several interesting sides. First and foremost, it has been credited with "inventing" the American Ghost. The book deserves a great deal of credit for this alone.
It is also the story of a man in what we might refer to as "midlife crises" today. Bored with his respectable existence, he has fun and takes solace in a holiday outside of his behavioral norms. He has middle aged man thoughts- about his wife and a younger attractive ghost woman, that are realistic (to the extent of the propriety of the author) and enlightening. A true triumph of the work, however, is that it does this without becoming so maudlin that it is suitable for an English class.
Finally, it is a comedic book, that is entertaining and worth reading.
I recommend this book, but the reader needs to be prepared to judge it in the context of its day- and from that perspective it is truly remarkable.
better than the TV show.......2005-09-08
and i very liked the show too !!. i remember seeing this book in the private collection of a professor at the university i worked at. so i took it home without his knowledge and read it. it was a very good read. light hearted but with a pleasant sadness.
Great escapist fare from the jazz age.......2004-02-04
Having never heard of the movie, my initial attraction to this book was actually the cover art. Though there really isn't a date given, I pictured it perhaps in the early 1920's, though the depiction of the automobile as some kind of strange novelty probably sets it in the early 1910's.
Perhaps it's a reflection on myself, but I enjoy stories about ordinary people who are stuck in a rut or who have lived their lives having never followed their dreams and who are given one last chance to shine.
The characters and antics are outrageous, yet likable in a strange way. And the story reads pretty quickly.
While reading this book, I pictured elements of the 20's, 50's, and 80's. In fact, I think they should re-make a movie of this book and set it in a "timeless" setting.
Overall, if you're not prejudiced against reading a book written in the 1920's, I'd recommend it.
A Humour Standard.......2002-11-20
'Topper' is best known perhaps from the Cary Grant movie version. It's a good movie but I like the book even better. The characters delight, particularly in terms of Cosmo's retaining his decorum, in the warmth of Marion's dead-but-still-sexy presence. Anyone who enjoys humourous novels has to put this one on their reading list. Few recent humour novels are as funny as this classic from decades past, but there is one I know of, entitled 'Rastus Reilly', and I recommend that book as well.
Madcap haunting.......2002-03-25
I loved this book the first time I read it. This time it was less charming, though still fun. It all begins when Cosmo Topper, the epitome of Humdrum Life buys a car -- and discovers too late that it is haunted. Yes, haunted, and by outrageously adventuresome ghosts as well. Ghosts that drag poor Cosmo from one scrape to another and convert his Humdrum to Mayhem. Great Fun!

Book Description
The beloved characters--mortal and immortal--of Topper return in this uproarious romp through the south of France. One of Thorne Smith's best-loved comedies, it proves once again that he is the undisputed master of urbane wit and sophisticated repartee.
Cosmo Topper, the mild-mannered bank manager who was persuaded to take a walk on the wild side by the ghosts of George and Marion Kerby in Topper, finds himself reunited with his dyspeptic wife for an extended vacation on the Riviera. But he doesn't have long to enjoy the peace and quiet before the irrepressible Kerbys materialize once again and start causing fracases, confusing the citizenry, alarming the gendarmes, getting naked, and turning every occasion into revelry or melee. Soon Marion decides that Topper as a ghost would be even more laughs than Topper in the flesh. And all she needs to arrange is one simple little murder.
Born in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1892, educated at Dartmouth, THORNE SMITH was an early cohort of Dorothy Parker's. He achieved literary success in 1926 with the publication of Topper and went on to publish nine novels in the next eight years. He earned a passionate following among both critics and readers before his death, at the age of forty-two, in 1934.
CAROLYN SEE is the author of nine books. Her latest novel is The Handyman. She lives in Pacific Palisades, California.
Customer Reviews:
George (Cary Grant) replaced with a dog.......2007-01-13
We find Mr. Topper (Billie Burke) is going to get a divorce due to catching her hubby with a woman that is not a woman, Marion Kerby (Constance Bennett.) or at least she is being pushed in to thinking she wants a divorce bay a so called friend of whom has a nefarious purpose of her own. Toppy must go after her and woo her back.
The story line is week and the acting trite. There is a defiant lack of comedy or even credulity. There is a countless count and an unbelievable scheme. Oh yes, Cary grant is replaced by Skippy.
On the plus side Cosmo Topper (Roland Young) does a great job of being pushed around by the invisible. And Alan Mowbray the bad guy in "Charlie Chan in London" made a believable butler. "Now you are holding the door open for me."
The weak link in the trilogy.......2005-06-08
There are three classic Topper films from the golden age of movies. The first, with Cary Grant, is a winner. The third, with Joan Blondell, is even better. But Topper Takes A Trip, the second in the series, is a complete dud. The script is simply embarrassing and wholly unfunny. The scenes (e.g. the bartender and the dog)are often pathetic. It took some doing to make a flop with the likes of the stars in this film. Even Franklin Pangborn is awful. But reading lines like that, how could he be otherwise? Best forgotten.
DELIGHTFUL SEQUEL........2002-08-28
This follow-up to the highly successful TOPPER - which was made earlier that year (1939) - picks up where the last film left off. After reestablishing the auto accident which killed the drunken Bennett and Grant in the first film and turned them into ghosts, we are treated (sans Cary Grant) to a hilarious 85 minutes. Clara Topper (Burke) spots Marion Kirby (Bennett) in her husband Cosmo's room. Clara goes to Paris - with Cosmo following - in order to get a divorce because she believes her hen-pecked husband has been seeing another "woman". Unable to explain to Clara that Marion is only a ghost, Cosmo tries to fast-talk Burke into a reconciliaton. Several floating martinis later, Bennett manages to reconcile the couple, and is now able to join her husband in their celestial home. The trick photography by Roy Seawright is astonishing for its day. Cushions which deflate when invisible figures sit on them, cigarettes being smoked in mid-air and pencils writing notes by themselves are all executed with great skill. The sight of the Kirby's dog Skippy - also a ghost - is hilarious when only his tail fails to become invisible or when he bites the ankles of totally flabbergasted men! A third film, TOPPER RETURNS is a surprisingly pleasant diversion from 1941: it stars Joan Blondell as Marion Kirby.
Comedy at its best.......2000-01-03
Topper movies have been some of the best clean cut comedy ever. These are the types of movies you can watch over and over and still continue to laugh. More comedy movies of today should be made this way. I know there are "Topper" lovers as myself and would enjoy being able to see them on the American Movie Classic channel or just on regular tv from time to time. The only move I own is Topper Returns and would love to have these others. I grew up watching these movies and will continue to watch them. Please bring them back.
greatfamilyfilm.......1998-12-19
it would do all of us good if more movies were being made today that can make us laugh just by it being funny not by it being an effort to hurt or humiliate a person place or thing. maybe someone someday will look again at these old classics and see how refreshing it was to be entertained not by seeing people or places blowing up or being destroyd but just being allowed to sit back relax and enjoy the fact that what your watching can entertain you your grandmother and your kids all at the same time.
