Book Description

Andrew and Evie have found Mom at last. But she had to come out of hiding to get to the twins, and now the Company is on to her aliases. There's only one solution: Mom has to go underground again, and this time, she's bringing Andrew and Evie with her.The twins are used to moving to new places, so at first taking on new identities doesn't seem like that big a deal. It's kind of fun, actually. But soon Andrew and Evie realize they're not just leaving behind another town -- they're leaving behind themselves, their personalities. And there's one more thing, too... Pop.

4 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-11-10

The book is great, although I found it not quite as enjoyable as the others in the series. It is still an incredible book, and is worth the money. If you enjoy the other Spy X books, you will find this to be a worthy addition to the series.

5 out of 5 stars The Awesomest Book ever!!!!!!.......2006-04-05

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2006-01-16

I loved this book. It was very suspenseful and I have read the whole series. I recommend it to other kids who like spy books.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting fourth book in the Spy X series........2005-08-03

This is the fourth book in the Spy X series, about eleven-year-old twins Andrew and Evie Wall, who become involved in the world of spying and secret codes after their mother's disappearance.

Andrew and Evie have finally been reunited with their mother. But it's not the reunion they have been imagining since she first disappeared, almost a year ago. They can't get back to their own lives -- Mom must remain underground as a member of The Resistance, a group opposing The Company, the spy organization she used to work for until she learned of its unethical goals. But now, she is taking Andrew and Evie to join her in hiding. The danger still remains, and Andrew and Evie are horrified when they learn their father is on the opposite side, as a member of The Company. When Mom gets captured, can Andrew and Evie rescue her?

Kids who enjoyed the previous Spy X books are sure to enjoy this one as well, and I'd recommend the whole series to kids who enjoy mystery and adventure series. Unfortunately, it seems to be the last book for now. I hope there are more books in this series later on, as this one leaves a lot open.

Book Description

Stubbornness has landed private eye V.I. Warshawski in big trouble at her Chicago office.  With her grand old Loop building set to be razed, she's become a hold-out tenant amid frayed wiring and scary, empty corridors.  Then she finds a homeless woman with three kids in the basement, and before she can rescue them, they disappear.  Worst of all, she's been implicated in a murder--after the body of Deirdre Messenger, a prominent lawyer's wife, turns up sprawled across her desk.

V.I., who had volunteered with Deirdre at a women's shelter, suspects her death is linked to a case of upper-class domestic abuse so slickly concealed that the police refuse to believe it.  Increasingly at odds with the cops, V.I. is blindly plunging ahead after the truth.  And her path may lead to corruption at the highest levels.or deep into the abandoned tunnels beneath Chicago's streets, where secrets are hiding in the dark like a child's--or V.I.'s--worst nightmare.

3 out of 5 stars Chicago--still the gateway to the West?.......2006-06-08

This was my first Paretsky book. It seems like an amalgam of suspense, western shoot-em-up, & fantasy to me. It's very long & the author packs so many different things into it (tons of action, lots of emotion, social ills, love interest, etc.) that she doesn't do most of them justice. There's little character development--most of them are paper-thin & the heroine (Vic I. Warshawski) is difficult to believe. Yes, this is fiction, but the odds are she wouldn't last very long (not even through this book) in real life. No wonder she alienates so many of the other characters. In a way, she's quite child-like--she's right, everybody else is wrong, no one else has any rights, & she wants what she wants when she wants it. I didn't find her very likable, let alone realistic.

Some of the scenes were, however, well done, there is some fun in the book, & the author provides some interesting turns of phrase: "People were tossing bright-painted eggs in the air to keep me from looking at the juggler" & "It's watching you plunge ahead without regard for anything or anyone except your own private version of justice." The latter is from her cop boyfriend. She's very tough on him too. I thought Supergirl was nicer. Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone does some wild things too but doesn't come close to Warshawski. Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone has a lot of personal issues, but they seem more realistic, and (of course) Agatha Christie's Miss Marple is far more cerebral--generally providing sufficient clues for the reader to (with considerable difficulty) figure out the mystery. Prior reviewers seem mixed on how this novel compares to other Paretsky's, so maybe I'll try a different one. But in this one, IMHO, Warshawski doesn't compare favorably with other mystery heroines.

3 out of 5 stars How Last Century.......2005-09-30

This is one of the author's earlier efforts and this has both positive and negative aspects. In some senses it is fresher than later works. However, it is also rougher. Both the plot line and the characters were a bit crude. VI seemed at times like a cross between an idiot a jerk and a neurotic. The reasons for this are explained somewhat by revelations toward the end of the book, but I found myself less sympathetic toward her than I have in the past. This novel was written before I became a fan, and if I had read it first, I am not sure I would have become enthused with Paretsky's work

5 out of 5 stars Paretsky at her incredible best!.......2001-04-28

I've read many reviews who fault Paretsky on the believability of this book - but I say who cares? Vic Warshawski isn't meant to be realistic (a real PI would never be as interesting!) Vic is the kind of character everyone can relate to - she's fast and tough, but thoughtful and very kind hearted. Her escapades in Tunnel Vision - including a run in with a rather large aeroplane and a fight with a Romanian muscle mountain - are engaging, exciting and fabulous to imagine. Paretsky is one of the very best crime/thriller writers around today! If this is the first Paretsky you have read - the others are a must!!!

2 out of 5 stars Too Hard to Believe.......2000-08-27

I've read every Paretsky / Warshawski book but the last (as we speak), but I'm disappointed at the pretty unbelievable action in this one. I often feel like our author and our leading lady have the same problem as Robin Cook sometimes -- when the characters start moving around and breaking into places and being mugged, being tailed, etc. etc., it just gets a little tough to believe. I believe if V.I. stayed put a little more and did a little more cerebral work and a little less hotdogging 'round Chicago, we'd both be happer.

I'm still a fan, but I'd rather see fewer and more well developed characters, a somewhat less complicated yet compelling plot, and surely less social commentary. Letting some reasonable actions speak for themselves is better than rubbing our faces in it. Would like to see Paretsky stop reading Grisham and get back to her earlier self!

5 out of 5 stars Not a ladies mystery.......2000-05-11

This is my first exposure to Sarah Paretsky. I thought that Tunnel Vision was a first rate mystery. The details in the underground scenes were fantastic. I felt like I was really there, just steps behind the flood. It was so vivid it was terrifying. I can see those chicago tunnels yet! Sarah Paretsky has a good head for technical detail, good as Crichton et. al., hell, good as any man, writer or otherwise. This is by no means a gentile "ladies tea party mystery. "V.I. Warshawsky is tough yet desireable, one cool lady detective. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars interesting,quirky and totally worth a read........2007-09-18

i really liked this book.
it was very interesting. it was funny, quirky and very informative.
i had a mild interest in the Tube before reading it, but now i found myself much more interested. Andy, the main character is a geeky 20something 'trainspotter' whose not-so-good friend Rolf bets him he can't visit every station in a day, which happens to be the day before his wedding and he must keep the bet, otherwise he won't be able to get to the wedding, because his friend has hidden his passport, tickets, among other things.
in the way, he meets strange characters like the goodhearted tramp, brian, who helps him on his journey, the italian woman whom he think is a spy following him or naked him, who's also fallen victim of a prank played by his friends on his stag night.

one of the things i liked about this book what the way the author writes. it flows very evenly, and while he goes on different subjects and sometimes even rambles, it works, cause it seems like the kind of thing Andy would do.

he also uses different formats so the narration isn't always the same. we find a Q&A, and the stream-of-conscience narrator is interrumpted to take us back to when he met his fiancée,Rachel, and other insane tube-related stories.

it's full of suspense, making you wonder what's going to happen, if he succeeds, or fails or if he's going to lose his fiancée.
it's not clear until the very last minute, and i really enjoyed it.

Rachel is also a player on the story, she isn't just Andy's fiancée, we see her too, what it's like for her, what goes through her minds and how she deals with one of Andy's insane friends.

it's very good books for those interested in the London Underground, or even London itself.
many obsessed geeks may see themselves in Andy, and root for him to win.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-06-15

Andy is a day away from his wedding when he makes a bet with his friend Rolf that he can go through every tube stop on the London Underground in one day. Of course his girlfriend doesn't know this and Andy hopes to never have to tell her. It is a really fun read, esp. for any Londoner commuting on the tube everyday. I particularly like Brian, the tramp Andy picks up early on in his journey. He's such a typical London character and he's hilarious. This a light read but it still has a lot of human depth to it, I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars Went a little long, but altogether enjoyable...(3 1/2 stars).......2004-12-23

This almost 400 page book takes the time of an entire day starting at 5:00 in the morning. Andy leaves his flat early while his fiance Rachel quietly sleeps. He's supposed to leave on the Eurostar train with Rachel, at midnight, but he happened to make a bet with his "friend you love to hate" Rolf, who is a "tube enthusiast," like himself.

So, the bet goes like this. Rolf thinks that Andy cannot travel around the ENTIRE tube in a single day. Andy thinks that he can. He is supposed to go around and take pictures of all of the signs, pick up envelopes that are taped to non-moving trains and behind soda machines, and finish before the Eurostar is supposed to leave. He is supposed to receive the last envelope from Rolf, which contains his tickets. Will he make it?

Knowing the unpredictability of the London underground, this made for an original plot. There can be delays, accidents, people throwing themselves on the tracks. He can't take any overground transportation, it has to be the tube. If Rachel finds out about this bet, where he basically threw his marriage in the pot, would she still marry him? She tries to ignore his obsession with the underground, but this is ridiculous.

All in all, it was fun to read about. It was very detailed and made me wonder if the author walked through his book, tracking down small details as he went. For a while, I was starting to wonder if it would become boring, following Andy through his travels all alone, but he met Brian, a homeless man who jumped on his coattails. Andy is annoyed with him at first, but the longer they are around each other, they start to form an unlikely friendship. Brian makes the story a little more readable.

I didn't give it more stars because even though it was interesting, it wasn't engrossing, and I picked up and put down the book several times before I finished it. Maybe it was the length of the novel. Maybe, even though I'm obsessed with London and it's contents, that a book about traveling on the underground doesn't have enough drama for me. But, it was a nice ride, all the same.

4 out of 5 stars Marmite in writing..........2004-03-31

Having lived in London for two years, I feel I can enjoy this book more than most people. If you have no pior knowledge of the London Tube, this book is not for you. It will probably end up boring you after the Prologue. Well, unless you want to be completey lost in a mental picture of London for 200 some pages.

There is plenty of action to satisfy me (considering that Les Miserable by Victor Hugo is one of my favorites, that's not saying much) and some enjoyable, as well as thought provoking, romance for those who like that (that would include myself). And that's what I found the whole book to be: though provoking. It wasn't as evident, I felt, as it could have been but there were many parts I found myself saying "Ohhh...I've never looked at that part of London that way before!"

Quite simply, it is an enjoyable read. There is definate room for some improvement, but it is not terrible or all that boring once gotten into (I will say I read it straight through tonight, right after getting it from my school library), but it all depends on what you find humorous and what you find boring.

Personally, I wouldn't over look it by someone else's opinion. I think this book is like Marmite: you love it or you hate it.

4 out of 5 stars A Light, Fun Thrill.......2003-11-28

"Tunnel Vision" should not be placed next to The Canterbury Tales, Crime and Punishment, Pride and Prejudice as one of the greatest works of all time. It just doesn't have the weight of a classic. That does not mean that it isn't a fun adventure to be greatly enjoyed. I loved Tunnel Vision because it was not a serious book full of deep philosophy. It has touching moments but it is for the most part, just an escapist adventure. Anyone who has been on the London Underground can appreciate the setting in this book and understand the problems that the main character faces. Even if you haven't been on the LU, you can still enjoy this fun and exciting book.

Book Description

The fabric of our nation's healthcare is woven inside of a rigid framework that hides many facts from those of us who do not sit on `Capitol Hill'. Insurance companies have already stolen the healthcare system from the doctors. Now they are successfully corrupting the justice system. This book simply defines the myths created by insurance propaganda while the reader learns how to protect himself by placing himself on equal ground with the insurance companies. America's Tunnel Vision brings to focus facts about healthcare consumer's basic rights that are widely overlooked and ignored.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for all health care and medical reform activists.......2006-08-10

One of the principle causes of death and injury in the United States today is the widespread reality of doctors who are too rushed to give proper attention to their patients. The haste is created by the pressure upon physicians by insurance companies control care decision, inadequate information about new drugs, a rigid healthcare framework, the insurance and pharmaceutical company financed corruption of the justice system from the congress to the courthouse. America's Tunnel Vision: How Insurance Companies' Propaganda Is Corrupting Medicine And Law by Michael Townes Watson (a former Adjunct Professor of Medical Malpractice law, a practitioner in Law and Medicine for more than thirty years, and the author of four law books and numerous articles on legal/medical issues) is a clarion call to make right what has gone wrong in the medical and judicial systems. In an era when hospital error kills more people than any form of cancer (except lung cancer), when you are five times ore likely to be injured in a hospital than when driving your car, when insurance companies think your life is worth less if you are hurt by a doctor than if you are hurt by a drunk driver, and when insurance companies have taken over the practice of medicine and are now in the active process of taking over the justice system, it's only men and women like Michael Watson and books like America's Tunnel Vision that can hope to awaken the general public to what is going on and to motivate them to corrective action. Simply stated, America's Tunnel Vision is "must" reading for all health care and medical reform activists, and needs to be placed in the Social Issues reference collections of every community and academic library in the country.

4 out of 5 stars Informative .......2006-05-23

If you are a healthcare consumer you can't afford not to read this book. Author Michael Townes Watson uses actual accounts from real cases to inform the reader of injustices that are being carried out in what is described as a "stealth-like" fashion. The book sends a strong message that if we as a nation do not become more aware and informed; then more and more of us are going to be adversely affected by the lawmakers that are currently attempting to pass bills that prevent victims of medical malpractice from receiving the aid of the justice system. The book is equally entertaining as it is informative, containing facts about widely publicized cases and dispelling the myths about their outcomes. A book on this topic could have the potential to be extremely boring, but this one was anything but. Definitely recommend.

Book Description

Convicted of arranging his wife?s murder in 1986, Robert Marshall refutes the allegations made by Joe McGinnis in Blind Faith, exposes flaws in the judicial process that led to his conviction, and reveals how friends and family show their character when it counts the most. Tunnel Vision is Robert Marshall?s story of the events leading up to his wife?s murder, the trial and his conviction. He also shares a few glimpses of the odder moments in life on death row. This portrayal of his life and his relationships with family members and the community, and the failings of his defense team 3/4 and dubious conduct on the part of the prosecution 3/4 raises serious questions about his case in particular and the death penalty in general. Marshall maintains his innocence, and continues to appeal the conviction. Will he, like Dennis Stockton (Dead Run) also be executed, even as evidence of his innocence mounts? Tunnel vision will appeal to readers of titles such as those below; but he maintains he is innocent, and his tale does not emphasize the horrors of prison life. His book is not gory 3/4 the most frightening aspect is that a very, very ordinary white male could be caught up in such a surreal situation, as a result of very, very ordinary actions taken. 1. 1 out of 5 stars A pathetic wife killer's lies.......2007-07-13

A sorry attempt to explain how he was "framed" for his wifes murder. Bad lawyers, lying cops, corrupt legal system. Yeah right! He is guilty as sin and deserves to be right where he is. This book is a waste.

1 out of 5 stars Is he kidding? I wish I could give zero stars!.......2005-06-18

He, Jeffrey MacDonald, John Orr and Diane Downs should all be roomies.

It amazes me how murderers are allowed permitted to write books designed to paint themselves as "innocent."

I hope no one bought this!

2 out of 5 stars still guilty.......2003-12-13

An interesting book because of its author; a convicted murderer. Marshall and his late sister did a good job with the writing, but fail to answer too many questions. Why Marshall spent thousands supposedly hiring private investigators from Louisiana to check on missing money in his Harrah's account, something which is central to the story, is never really cleared up. Nor does he address why even his two eldest sons concluded that he was guilty -- not by itself proof of guilt, but worth wondering about. As literature and as debate material, ultimately disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars This Man Is Innocent!.......2003-09-09

If you have read the book Blind Faith you MUST read Tunnel Vision also. Robert Marshall gives you a look into the truth about his story. He tells you what really happened when his family was tragically torn apart by his wife's murder. In his book he is able to clear up many untruths that were published in the book Blind Faith. I was amazed at how "uninvolved" his trial lawyer was with his case. To Robert's great unfortune he had the wrong man defending his life. I HIGHLY recommend this book, it is well written and will give any reader great pause. I hope Robert finds the justice he deserves and is released from prison.

Christopher Ross is astute, perceptive and witty, without laying the latter on too thickly. He invites the reader into the workings of his mind, providing observations and speculations combined with a running commentary on what he witnesses daily and reflections on past experience. The end product is a beautiful, philosophical, eminently approachable book.

5 out of 5 stars Tunnel Vision by Fran Arrick .......2006-11-18

I read this book in, I think, 10th grade. This book really made me even more suicidal. The Poem that Anthony wrote, in the end, I was going to leave as part of my suicide note when I finally got the courage to "leave" which I never did. I've been looking all over for this book. Can't wait to read it again.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!.......2003-03-13

I read this book in the midst of a serious battle with teenage depression, and surprisingly enough, it helped me through it. Seeing that this boy thought he had nothing left to live for, and then seeing how many people actually cared for him, it really put things into perspective. I definately recommend this book to everyone.

    4 out of 5 stars "A teenage suicide".......1998-03-07

"Tunnel Vision" is a book which looks at the problems which are being faced by teenagers and the self-destruction which a teenager is led to. This is followed by the events of the days following Anthony's suicide, in which every family member and friend looks for a reason as to what was responsible for this outcome. I was grasped by this tenurial story.

      Book Description

The idea of a Channel Tunnel has always aroused strong emotions in Britain. It has been supported by those wanting closer political, economic and cultural links with Europe but opposed by believers in Britain's island identity and overseas empire. In contrast, the French have been almost unanimously in favour. Channel Tunnel Vision 1850-1950 is an account of attempts over a century to build a link with France. Early schemes, some owing more to Heath-Robinson than to sound engineering practice, were succeeded by serious proposals based on scientific surveys of the sea-bed carried out in the 1860s. After describing the major entrepreneurs and their plans, Keith Wilson goes on to show the reactions of successive British Governments. On several occasions the decision on whether or not to go ahead was a very close-run thing. He quotes the views, which make remarkable reading, of Prime Ministers from Gladstone to Ramsay MacDonald; of Foreign Secretaries including Grey and Curzon; and of admirals and generals ranging from Fisher to Wolseley, French and Henry Wilson. Their fears of sabotage, invasion and a future political rift with France were set against hopes of economic advantage. They also saw an enhanced ability to respond quickly to future German aggression. How the existence of a Channel Tunnel would have affected the 1940 campaign is an intriguing speculation.
