Book Description

Turning Angel marks the long-awaited return of Penn Cage, the lawyer hero of The Quiet Game, and introduces Drew Elliott, the highly respected doctor who saved Penn's life in a hiking accident when they were boys. As two of the most prominent citizens of Natchez, Drew and Penn sit on the school board of their alma mater, St. Stephen's Prep. When the nude body of a young female student is found near the Mississippi River, the entire community is shocked -- but no one more than Penn, who discovers that his best friend was entangled in a passionate relationship with the girl and may be accused of her murder.

On the surface, Kate Townsend seems the most unlikely murder victim imaginable. A star student and athlete, she'd been accepted to Harvard and carried the hope and pride of the town on her shoulders. But like her school and her town, Kate also had a secret life -- one about which her adult lover knew little. When Drew begs Penn to defend him, Penn allows his sense of obligation to override his instinct and agrees. Yet before he can begin, both men are drawn into a dangerous web of blackmail and violence. Drew reacts like anything but an innocent man, and Penn finds himself doubting his friend's motives and searching for a path out of harm's way.

More dangerous yet is Shad Johnson, the black district attorney whose dream is to send a rich white man to death row in Mississippi. At Shad's order, Drew is jailed, the police cease hunting Kate's killer, and Penn realizes that only by finding Kate's murderer himself can he save his friend's life.

With his daughter's babysitter as his guide, Penn penetrates the secret world of St. Stephen's, a place that parents never see, where reality veers so radically from appearance that Penn risks losing his own moral compass. St. Stephen's is a dark mirror of the adult world, one populated by steroid-crazed jocks, girls desperate for attention, jaded teens flirting with nihilism, and hidden among them all -- one true psychopath. It is Penn's journey into the heart of his alma mater that gives Turning Angel its hypnotic power, for on that journey he finds that the intersection of the adult and nearly adult worlds is a dangerous place indeed. By the time Penn arrives at the shattering truth behind Kate Townsend's death, his quiet Southern town will never be the same.

4 out of 5 stars Another super Iles!.......2007-10-10

I've loved just about everything Greg has written. Turning Angel was another interesting and emotionally charged book by an amazingly talented author. Super characters. I think Greg is one of the best thriller writers today.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Defines "Pageturner".......2007-10-03

First, Turning Angel is a real page turner, but suprisingly to me, it also has a lot of content outside of murder and mayhem. The author makes some really incisive observations about life in the South. So, why four stars rather than five ? I found the protagionist's getting away from one of the bad guys near the end of the book kind of hard to swallow.
Otherwise, great read.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Vivid, Page-turner.......2007-08-06

Iles blends his well-researched sense of place with a complex but highly believable plot. His characters are strong and ring true. His topic may make some uncomfortable but then, if we are not sometimes uncomfortable with what's happening in every-day life these days, we are not understanding what's happening in today's world. This may be fiction, but it provokes thought and perhaps has some worthwhile observations as well.

Usually, I don't care for first person, present tense narration, but I truly loved this book and really didn't want the story to end.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2007-06-03

This is the second book I've read of Mr. Iles. He never disappoints me. Very well written and accurate for the location.

3 out of 5 stars Not Great, but readable.......2007-06-01

This book is mildly interesting. Its slow in certain areas and I haven't found a character that I really care about. I'll continue reading, but only during the ride to work on the Metro.

Having just read "True Evil" , this book is a big big let down...

Product Description

Most people are curious; what is it like to work as an escort? According to numerous sex surveys, one of women's top fantasies is to be paid for sex. But escort work is not as simple as money for sex. Brooks, a former escort, has written a myth-exploding examination of what escort work requires from the escort while creating an honest and humane vision of a mysterious, maligned business.

The book is not a recruitment tool because the job is not for everyone. The Foundation is a reference written to create a realistic awareness of the pitfalls and bonuses of escort work for current and future escorts, as well as the curious public. Ultimately, safe and sane escort work leads to happier, healthier escorts. (And happy escorts make for happy clients.)

2 out of 5 stars They WILL publish anything!.......2007-09-17

This purchase was a way to delve into the lifestyle of an escort, since they've been involved in many sexual scandals lately. I wanted to find the value and thrill these men in the public eye have found in their encounters with these women. This was bought and read with an open mind, truly no expectations. I read it as a professional business woman, a mother, a wife, a daughter and a sexual and sensual being. There were some interesting revelations and candid discussions which opened my eyes to situations I was ignorant of. Her words were biting and cut-throat at times, but as she claims, it's about business not emotions. Kudos! However, I felt that it read like a chapter book for a 3rd grader, it was condescending, drab and simply not very well written. Granted this wasn't aiming to become the next literary accomplishment, but I just expect more from a book if someone, somewhere, felt it was worthy enough to publish. Interesting read, not certain that it would do to much to help anyone who MAY want to break into this field. It seems that the basic business information she provides is common sense to begin with.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.......2007-08-17

The Internet Escort's Handbook is truly a well thought out book written n in a holistic matter by an ex escort for all girls who are currently working in the industry, keen or curious about entering the industry. It gives an insight of what it is and what goes on in this industry; asks a lot of provocative questions; provides useful tips. I would strongly recommend this as the ONE resource you should read. I can't wait for the other books in this series to be out.

4 out of 5 stars So you want to get started?.......2007-08-11

Thought the book by Amanda Brooks was well put together. Gives you ideas of what you need to do if you chose to go into the business. But, it does not stop there. Need to go to Book 2 which is not available yet. I do recommend the book for starters.

5 out of 5 stars highly educational.......2007-07-05

This is not a sex book. The style is simple and direct. there are lots of very interesting topics. I loved the part about "taking care of physical appearance". This does apply to women in general, not only escort business. The part about protecting yourself from STD is a little paranoiac but since this job is exposed to high risks, it is good to know what the risks are. I would recommend this book for all women and men (even if this is mostly for a women audience), curious about this underground world. It is more about the facts and the technical aspect than about the morality, although the author mentions the psychological part and the fact that it often leads to a double life. This book is intended to be a how to guide, but it can be read for entertainment only as well. I am a married man and I have more respect for these women after reading this book. They are normal women, often educated and running a home business, with all the administrative part of it.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!.......2007-06-19

I have to say that Ms. Brooks hit it on the head! This book is a perfect read for anyone that was interested in this line of work, how and where to start! She dispels the myths of drug addicted, sexual abused women are the only ones in this profession. She gives common sense answers to questions that the average person may not have thought of! Gracious and beautifully written, this book pays homage to the women that have gone before and prepared the foundation. It sheds light on the facts (and fictions), gives hope and laughter to anyone who reads this book. This book is not for everyone, but for everyone who is privy to it, it is a joy to read! I truly enjoyed it!

This is what comics should be, easy to get into, great storytelling, characters you fall in love with and are not trying to be the next gritty batman, no here you have spider-girl, a girl in comics without huge..assets, who is not wearing skimpy clothes that would make playboy blush, no she's covered up.

this is one that would be a great role model for kids, boys will love her (i do) and girls who have so few to pick from and those few wear nothing to nothing and make barbie look like a stick figure, spider-girl learns lessons but in the mighty marvel manner she does it while having great adventures and it's never preachy.

5 out of 5 stars well done!.......2001-11-25

this is a book about teenage sucide. The author demonstrated great sensitivity for the readers. The subject matter for all who have adolescent children is a difficult one. Yet, I came away with so much knowledge and insite that I wasn't appalld by the topic,as I thought I would be. Again, the author does a good job describing Bergins (victim's name) interruption of what was troubling her. I found it most insightful of the therapist treatment(homework assignments) for Bergin. Atlas, a happy ending and for the reader a clear understanding of what was going on in Bergins mind and what she was feeling.
Especially recommended for adolescence from divorced homes.

5 out of 5 stars well written story.......2001-11-24

This is a book about a teenage suicide. From start to finish the book was sensitive to the reader re the subject matter. A difficult subject, indeed. I found the book insightful into the mind of a teenager and her way of interrupting life and her particular situation. The cause for her to take her life had an extraordinary simple explantion ,yet, the obvious was hidden
from all those who loved her due to the comman everyday ciurcumstances in their own life. The author keeps the readers interest throughout the book . Bergin's (girl victim) interaction with her psychiatrist was the best of all . The Simple homework given Bergin had a healing affect on the reader as well.
I enjoyed this book .Perhaps, because it had a happy ending or perhaps I totally shared with Bergin the healing effects of her treatment and a genuine understanting about sucide and some of the reasons why a young girl would want to end it all.
I think the book helps me to be a better mom not to look through my child or put his needs second to mine at any point in his vunerable life. He too comes from a home of divorced parents. The author makes the reader sensitive to the communication she has with her children and to how vulnerable our precious adolescent truly are. A good book!

Book Description

Lisa's having a hard time getting turned on, and when your job is to spearhead the Ministry of Thought's effort to find more appropriate sexual fantasies for women, that's a problem. Now that women have taken over the world, you see, the old lovesick, masochistic fantasies don't cut it; everything from The Story of O to romance novels leaves post-revolutionary women like Lisa cold.

Things with Brett, her SR (for Significant Relationship -- "boyfriend" is so pre-revolution), aren't exactly heating up either. And Justin, her new assistant...well, he's cute, but he's yet to complete his reeducation. In fact, his "nurturing competency" level is so low he's been assigned an ugly dog named Mac as part of his training.

Bonded in their quest to figure out how best to arouse women, Lisa and Justin soon find themselves plucked from the ranks of the Ministry for an altogether different mission, one that will land them in Zone Six -- home to socially irredeemable men -- right smack in the middle of a counterrevolutionary uprising.

4 out of 5 stars When Women Dominate.......2006-08-10

Maybe it is not a good idea to let women rule the world. On the other hand, it makes a grand fiction. Ms. Benard's story telling is fast and captivating. Time passes rapidly and all of a sudden it is nearly the end of the universe. Because it is sort of a romance fiction the target is Valentine's Day. What happens before the day approaches and after; those are the happenings commingled with authentic characters that will catch a reader's attention. It is not a straightforward boy meets girl, they fall in love then hook up type of a tale. Lisa is an ultimate modern woman being brought up by the wave of extreme feminism. She works for the government on a special project that makes her miserable. Justin is her assistant. They become fast friends. They sometimes have to do the unthinkable for the sake of their assignment. The story is futuristic, fantastical, and funny. New ways maybe researched to theorize the precepts that arouse a woman but the old seeming obtuse ways sometimes help a lot and they are here to stay whether people like it or not.

4 out of 5 stars Read on a whim.......2004-10-21

I was perusing the shelf at the bookstore, not looking for anything in particular when I came across this book. After finding a comfy chair, I started reading it before I even left the store. It was a fascinating take on life where women were the expected leaders and pacesetters and men were kept at guarded facilities until they were ready to integrate into society. From a psychology and mildly feminist background, this book entertained me from cover to cover. I think that it was best that I found this book by mistake or I would never have stumbled upon it to read.

With that, keep in mind that you want to read this book for the story and not the practicality of waking up tomorrow to a world as described in the book. I am not suggesting that it is impossible, just that change like that described would take many years to progress.

This is a good choice for a lighthearted novel exploring the 'what-ifs' of women domination and the pit falls of falling in love against the rules.

4 out of 5 stars NOT a "feminist" novel but a good light-hearted beach book.......2002-08-12

Jennifer Crusie meets Gloria Steinem and a good time is had by all.

The author makes no secret of her intentions here -- from the start she explicitly says that her sci-fi premise (the feminists have taken over and are trying to figure out what to do with all those incorrigible men) is not plausible. But who cares? As she says, if a man like Orwell can write a novel with talking animal characters, she's "entitled."

Although a light read, the author's detailed knowledge of the various genres of "erotica" and feminist writings about it (from de Sade to romance novels to Paglia to Ayn Rand) sustains the book intellectually.

The Orwell reference fits, but only if you think Animal Farm and not 1984. It definitely is not one of those angry, serious 1980s "feminist sci-fi" books like Margaret Atwood's "A Handmaid's Tale" or Suzy McKee Charnas'"Walk to the End of the Earth." If your expectations are more along the lines of Connie Willis' lighter works, the Bridget Jones series, or even ... romance queen Jennifer Crusie, you won't be disappointed.

One final warning -- despite the packaging, this book is not erotica.

3 out of 5 stars Humorous feminist fantasy with major flaws regarding gender.......2002-05-30

Cheryl Benard's second novel, "Turning on the Girls", is going to cause debate wherever it's read. It's part fantasy, part science fiction, part comedy, part novel, part sociology, part . . . well, you get the idea.

Don't let the cover of the book deceive you. I can understand why the publishers chose the image they did -- it specifically relates to the main character's attempt to find "acceptable" feminist erotica and her repeated encounters with women and men who keep reverting to the stereotypes of the past. The message you get from the dust jacket -- all the flowers! -- is not an accurate feel of the book's contents. This is a feminist fantasy with a humorous edge.

This book confused me for quite awhile. Before I even started reading it I thought that Benard had created just another anti-feminist book. But I was wrong. It's obvious that she views certain segments of the feminist camp as a little over the top, perhaps a little too serious, but still respects and honors the feminists of the past and those to come in the future.

Benard's humor hits most the target most of the time. Which brings me to my first warning: If you're uptight about your ideology, about feminism, you're guaranteed to have a least one of your sacred cows sacrificed. Benard leaves no one unscathed, whether it's New Age herbalists or macho guys with too much testosterone.

Benard shows several characters, both men and women, who are disgusted with what they see around them and are just trying to find their way. Lisa finds makeup disgusting and macho men sexist. Her work partner, Justin, just really wants to belong and, most importantly, have someone to love. Benard is going in the right direction, but I don't think she went far enough.

True, this book is supposed to be a politically relevant humorous fantasy. We're not supposed to get hung up on the specifics. So maybe what I'm about to argue would ruin Benard's entire story.

There are two fallacies presented here that made me decide that, while I did enjoy reading "Turning on the Girls", I ultimately do NOT like the book's message.

First of all, Benard presents the notorious and absolutely wrong view of global sisterhood. No where in the book do I remember a character being described in terms of race. Only after I had finished reading did I realize that I had pictured in my mind every single character as white. There's no mention as to how women were able to mend their fences and work together. Even more importantly, where did all the conservative women go? They're not all silly girls who wear long nails and makeup and cow tail to their man. The leap she makes in this regard -- with no explanation as to how all the various feminists worked together nor an explanation as to what happened to all the patriarchal women -- is disturbing because it helps to continue the fallacy that all feminists are alike. They're just not.

Secondly, I'd like to know why Benard didn't include a single male who was egalitarian. With the exception of one man, Lisa's final love interest, not a single male in Benard's book is seen as admirable. Yes, her administrative assistant, Justin, is shown in a positive light overall, but he is still presented as a bit of a wimp and lacking a backbone. She gives us stereotype after stereotype of males who aren't affectionate (and need pets to learn how to be a caretaker) or men who are slobs (tell that to my brother in-law who rants about my sister's constant creation of clutter!). True, this all part of the humor, but it's all easy targets. Going after macho and wimpy men is easy. So I'm surprised that Benard didn't pick on pro-feminist egalitarian men in this novel. But alas, they're nowhere to be seen in the text... I wish that the message of Benard's book was as good as her presentation, but it isn't. "Turning on the Girls" is a great read (be warned that it takes several pages in the beginning for Benard to grab the reader) and will create a lot of debate and discussion, but it's ultimately flawed.

5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2001-11-21

Benard's writing style is excellent for her subject. From the beginning she establishes an informal atmosphere as the narrator of the novel. At once she is matter-of-fact and sarcastic, drawing from both 1984 and Story of O to create a world that provokes thought just as much as it might scintillate our baser instincts. The novel begins rather slowly, acclimatizing the reader to the feminist-run version of life. The satire here is breathtaking (from laughter) as Benard pokes fun at everyone, from the ice-cold elite of the feminist regime to the pathetically paternalistic and two-dimensional counterrevolutionaries. (In portraying men in such a light, is Benard even making light of both ultra-feminist/anti-masculinist views and the male-dominated world of Orwell's 1984? The intrigue thickens.) After the orientation, the novel takes off into political intrigue, and then there is just no putting down this book. If that were not enough, the author develops the main character's story into a romancenovelesque subplot. Brava, Benard!

The entire Life of Faith collection of books by Martha Finley has been a life changing read for my 12 yr old daughter (and myself) over the last 3-4 years. The books are exciting adventures of faith filled families as well as a good dose of history. Violet Travilla, Elsie Dinsmore and Millie Keith are must reads for any girls, especially those from families of faith.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Let Go.......2001-06-16

My mom picked this book out for me and when I first saw the cover I thought to myself, "yeah right like I'm going to read this." I let the book sit in my room for a couple of days but then I kind of got interested in it. I decided it wouldn't hurt to read the first chapter. The first chapter started and then ended and then the second, the third, and so on untill the book was finished. I had read the whole book in one evening. I loved it!! Not only was it interesting and kept me wanting to read it but it was written about stuff that happens to teens like me in everyday life. I liked this book so much that I thanked my mom and had her go and buy me numbers 1-4. I've been reading the series ever since. In closing I would just like to encourage you to read this book and the others in the series! They truley are awesome!!

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2002-03-20

A while ago I read the third book in this series and loved it so much that I went back and got the first two. The very next day I bought the entire series of books available. I love this series! My only complaint is that they don't come out quick enough with new books..:) I can't wait for book 11 to come out. The characters and story lines are great, and real too. I'm a little older than HS age, but I still enjoy this series a lot. I tell everyone to check out these books regardless the age. If anyone has any idea when the next book comes out please let me know. I can hardly wait as it is...

5 out of 5 stars the last one.......2001-12-30

I got all the turning seventeen books for christmas this year and I have LOVED the ones I have read so far (books 1-5) ....

... these are the best books! their about 4 best friends in their senior year in high school, their falling in love and facing dificult isues in their lives!

4 out of 5 stars Totally unexpected.......2001-11-15

Wow. This book had so many twists in it it left me spinning. I cant believe all the things that appen in this book. I was so mad about Matt at the end. I always hoped that from the first book when Kerri and Matt get together that they would always be together. I cant believe he turned out to be a jerk. I actually am secretly hoping that Matt and Kerri work things out. Pathetic, I know. But I cant help it. I wish Donna had never been born. She (stinks) and is utterly pathetic.

This book series is about is a group of girls who form a cooking club and cook for people in their neighborhood and lots of other places too! They all act like normal girls and solve problems with the help of their friends. This particular book is about when the girls formed the main idea for the cooking club and their enemy threatens to wreck their summer plans! I loved the book. I read it in one day! The whole series is great and i LOVE the illustrations. They look so real and I love how the artist makes everything looked perfect. I just LOVED everything about this book!
