If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers' Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.
With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex?? Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.
The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.
You: The Owner's Manual challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. After taking a quiz that tests your body of knowledge, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs.
Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body -- as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, You: The Owner's Manual gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, you'll also get the great-tasting and calorie-saving Owner's Manual Diet -- a thirty-recipe eating plan that's designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.
Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?

You: The Owner's Manual.......2007-10-06
This book is very informative. It takes the human body and breaks it down so anyone can understand it. I have learned a great deal about my body and the abuse I do to it. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Oh, and I love the humor too!
Heath for Dummies.......2007-10-06
Health for dummies. Fun and quick reading. But, before you buy the book. Look through the 50 question quiz. If you are interested in the questions and were not able to answer them, then go ahead and buy.
Look at the menus at the back of the book. If you are not interested in changing your diet, you might look elsewhere.
Look at Page 127-139 for an excercise plan: Very basic
Page 173 simplistic smoking cessation plan
Interesting points

12) caruncle: reddish pink fleshy substance on the inside corner of your eye. remnant of the reptilian eye.
Tried to be a little too funny.......2007-10-01
I liked this book, but ended up skipping over a lot of the parts that were supposed to be funny. I would have liked the pictures to be labeled correctly, not with funny made up names for body parts.
You: The Owner's Manual.......2007-09-29
Great stuff, easy read. Very informative. I read it and then my Mom read it.
Very "YOUseful".......2007-09-28
In short, just a very informative book that is successful in achieving several goals. For one, it educates the reader in the inner workings of the human body. It does this quite entertainingly through trivia, facts, and interesting pictures (for instance the authors use a lot of elves). Additionally, the book also gives you many helpful tips on self-care and how to keep your body running smoother. While there is a lot information, I really would like to have seen a reference section at the end of the book. All in all though, it's a pretty informative and amusing read that should enhance the well-being of many. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for readers who might need more specific info on shoulder pain and rotator cuff self-care.

Younger Next Year for Women—which, for starters, will help you avoid literally 70 percent of the decay and eliminate 50 percent of the injuries and illnesses associated with getting older.
How? Drawn from disciplines as varied as evolutionary biology, cell physiology, experimental psychology and anthropology, the science behind
Younger Next Year is clear. Our bodies are programmed to do one of two things: either grow or decay. Sitting in front of a screen all day tells the body to decay. Taking a walk or doing yoga tells the body to grow. Loneliness and stress trigger decay; love and laughter trigger growth.
Just as clear as the science is the goal: Become the active gatekeeper of your own body and gain the power to control those signals of growth and decay. Seven simple rules show the way, from
#1 Exercise six days a week for the rest of your life, to #6 Care, to #7 Connect and commit.

They’re called Harry’s Rules, named for the doctor and coauthor—Henry S. Lodge, M.D.—who formulated them, and who explains the precise science behind each one. But since it’s one thing to know something’s good for you and quite another to put it into practice, Dr. Lodge, the scientist, is joined by Chris Crowley—coauthor, exhorter and living example—whose brusque charm and infectious enthusiasm will actually have you living by the rules. So, congratulations. You’re now about to get younger.

Young at heart.......2007-10-06
This is a good addition to the authors' previous book. It isn't the usual blah, blah, blah, but scientific information which amount to common sense. I am grateful to the authors for keeping me and my wife young at heart. I was happy to buy for my wife this book as "her own" copy, after we both extensively studied the original "Younger Next Year". Another great book that I highly recommend is "Can We Live 150 Year". In fact these two titles should be sold in one package as they complement each other
Younger Next Year for Women.......2007-09-28
Excellent arguments for doing all the right things you know you should do. Different approach in understanding how we age. Very comprehensive coverage of things we need to know. Down to earth, doable steps we can take to add healthier years to our lives. (Mrs. J. T.)
Encouraging book!!.......2007-09-28
This book gives advice and encouragement to women who have falsely come to believe that deterioration comes with age and there is nothing we can do about it. I truly enjoyed it and recommend it, but still want to make the following comments: it belabored the value of exercise to the point where I felt like shouting "OK, I get it, I get...we need to exercise!". In a way, I kept waiting for the book to also talk about OTHER things too, but really this was the total focus of the book. I also thought that it would have been nice if the authors included some women doctors' perspectives too (it was weird getting all that advice on how we women should live our lives from two men). And lastly, I felt that the recommendation (strongly and repeatedly given) to exercise for HOURS a day, every day preferably, was fine for the retired author of the book who, as another reviewer also mentioned, was spending ALOT of time doing things that are not easily affordable by the average woman, nevermind the huge amount of vacation/play time he had to enjoy that high-end exercise, like biking trips and skiing trips...not realistic for the kinds of lives most women, age 50-60 at least, really live in today's world (lives filled with the time demands of jobs combined with children, homes, elderly parents, grandchildren, etc.). It may be that this much exercise is what is really needed to turn back the clock, but I'm hoping that's not true- since so few of us have THAT much time to devote to exercise (the authors seemed to think that if you had your priorities straight, you'd find the time). In summary, however, the authors did convince me that I need to add strength training to my cardio training, so all-in-all, I felt it was worth reading this book and I do recommend!
I enjoyed every minute of it!.......2007-09-09
This book will make you look younger! Another bestseller that I love and highly recommend - How to be a Super Hot Woman: 339 Tips to Make Every Man Fall in Love with You and Every Woman Envy You
Great Book!!.......2007-09-07
This book is great reading! It's easy and entertaining. It offers excellent insights into our aging process and how to be healthy as we age. Each time I finish reading, I feel motivated to get out, exercise and get healthy!!

From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day. Picture cardiologists and dieticians tearing their hair out and overweight people cheering as they dive into Eggs Benedict with sausage.
According to Schwarzbein, the high-carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate-protein diet that most dieticians and disease-prevention organizations recommend is the culprit that turns people into diabetics, makes them age faster and get degenerative diseases, and keeps them fat and unhealthy. She supports her theory with case studies of people who were sick and miserable on high-carbo, low-fat diets and who sprang to life when they "balanced" their diets with more fat and protein. Schwarzbein recommends avoiding "man-made carbohydrates"--processed carbs--in favor of those you could "pick, gather or milk." She instructs patients to eat "as much good fat as their body needs": eggs, avocados, flaxseed oil, butter, mayonnaise, and olive oil. Sorry, but fried foods and hydrogenated fats are "bad fats," or "damaged fats," as Schwarzbein calls them. You can eat as many eggs a day as you want on this plan, plus meat (even sausage--as long as it's nitrate-free--and pâté), saturated fat, cream, and nonstarchy vegetables. The book includes a four-week meal plan and about 15 recipes.
Book Description
This groundbreaking book dispels the myths perpetuated by some bestselling diet books that may help people lose weight, but will put them on the fast track to disease. Based on sound research and the success of thousands of people, The Schwarzbein Principle proves that excess weight, degenerative disease and accelerated aging can be controlled - and reversed - in a healthful way. The Schwarzbein Principle is a holistic guide to achieving lasting weight loss, normalizing metabolism and maintaining ideal body composition through lifestyle and nutrition. By bringing the internal systems into balance, the Schwarzbein program has been proven to: reverse type II diabetes; free people from food cravings for chocolate, caffeine and sugar; cure depression and mood swings; and reduce body fat while building lean tissue. The nutritional program consists of two phases -Healing and Maintenance - which are easy to adopt into any lifestyle. Instead of shunning fat, the program advocates eating all of the good fats and proteins your body needs as well as an unlimited portion of non-starchy carbohydrates. By incorporating the lifestyle components of stress management, exercise and eliminating harmful stimulants, program participants experience renewed energy and vitality. Don't forget to check out the cookbooks!

Oh, my Goodness! .......2007-06-03
When I read this book, said, "WOW, this makes sense!" I have been on a good vitamin regime that includes progesterone and following the diet in this book. [...] In two months of the suppliments and progesterone and one month on this diet, I have; no more daily headaches, have slept better, feel refreshed upon waking for the first time in decades, lost 12 pounds, don't feel deprived, lost my cravings for sugar and processed cabs, have better moods, have quite a lot less muscle and joint pain, have more energy, enjoy sex more, have people tell me I am looking good, lost that puffy look in my face and body, have softer skin, my roscaea has lessened, my intestinal and uterine pain has gone away, and my allergies are a lot less, therefore my asthma is not as bad. I am 52, menopausal, with a top weight of 249, (now 237) with chronic pain and headaches. I am unbelievably happy about this diet and plan to continue it to become healthy and strong again. I have a long ways to go, but the start is amazing. I started out with adding butter and cream to my diet and stopped eating sugar and white carbs. I have always had cravings for sugar, but as soon as I got my fill of good fats, I lost my sugar cravings and have not been tempted to eat sugary or processed foods since. I have the cookbook on order and I am reading the other two books Dr. Schwarzbein has written. If you want to be healthy and feel better, read this book and go through her recommendations. You won't regret it. Just be aware that you may feel worse for a short time and then feel much better, it is your body making adjustments and is temporary. It depends on how sick and out of balance your body and system is. You have to stick with it to get good results. I have to say that I certainly do not feel deprived and feel satisfied.
Sensible eating and great for food addictions.......2007-05-30
I am now sold. was 80% there but after 5 pregnancies in 6 years, things went awry. then my mom went to the ER with a blood sugar of 887. I am now 42 with a 10 month old and two other young kids. Mom's visit got my attention. I immediately lost 6 pounds then switched to a cleanse by standard process which was very easy since i was eating pretty healthy anyway. When i got this book, i also signed up for womentowomen personal program. between the diet and the supplements and natural progesterone cream, i was a new woman almost immediately. my chocolate and wine cravings disappeared nearly overnite. I have alot of work to do still, have 20 pounds to go and have to find balance but food in this plan is balanced and a no brainer. even my meat and taters hubby drinks my veggie/fruit/avacado/protein (balanced) smoothies every day. he is hooked. our moods are better, more even. Now am working on my PMS and other menopause issues ala "what your doctor does not tell you about premenopause" by dr. Lee/Hanley and Uzzi Reice (sp?) book. just had my saliva hormones tested and am on the path to join my other girlfriends that feel fabulous. This is not a miracle, it takes a while to get back to a normal eating plan so your body is balanced and not starving. but, its a great plan. I recommend it to my friends. I am now 11 pounds down and headed for 20 more, 5 at at time. And, its not Atkins, you eat veggies and fruits and all things good. you don't eat crap though and i chose to give up coffee (and creamer) as well as limiting my alcohol intake. That with the diet, the good supplements and the natural pg cream, let's just say my husband will keep me a bit longer now (he wanted to hide me in the dumpster from mood swings up until now!!!).
Excellent.......2007-05-06
I feel no one should be without this very important book, we refer to information in it everyday to patients who want to become healthy again.
I would not be without it.
Good and bad carbs and fats........2007-04-01
An easy diet plan that explains the difference between good and bad carbs, and good and bad fats, plus explaining the influence of food on hormone imbalances.
FANTASTIC!!!.......2007-01-20
This book is fantastic! My mom actually turned me on to it after reading it herself. It taught me so much about the foods we eat and the foods we should eat. It also talks a lot about carbs. (good and bad) I had no idea that what I had been eating was really destroying my health.(physical and mental) This book was so easy to read and understand. In my oppinion, next to the Bible this is another book that everyone needs to read!!!(at least once) And the diet plan is the easiest I have ever seen!

This is a great reference book, I bought a few for gifts. There are many recipes if you need help using the ingredients you want to add to your diet.
Eat your veggies!.......2007-07-24
I didn't like it to much...I think I gave her to many stars am to nice......
the book was boring........too wide in the horizon...........she agreed with every one else on eat lots of fruits and vegetables and to scared to have her own opinion about supplements and medical treaments...every thing was everyone is right "flowes and rainbows it's all there is in this world".
Food for Thought.......2007-07-20
I understand why The View and Today show has picked Joy Bauer as their nutrition expert. The book is clear and concise with amazing advice for your basic ailments. She shows you how to alleviate some issues through change of diet and certain foods. Why would someone want to take a pill as their first choice? When this book can help you naturally change the way you feel through food.
Joy Bauer's Food Cures.......2007-07-19
I have to admit that when I agreed to review Food Cures I had an entirely different book in mind. To me, the title suggested a more holistic view of disease and nutrition. Therefore, I expected sections about what foods could help a person get more calcium in their diet, what foods contain B vitamins, and what foods might help relieve ulcers.
The author of food cures is a dietitian and nutrition expert for the Today Show. Her focus is to guide individuals towards an overall healthier lifestyle and nutritional plan. Thus, this book is primarily a diet book. Lose ten pounds while gaining great skin and nails.
To this end, the author does a very good job of laying out four step programs that lead the reader to a healthier lifestyle. In step two of these programs, there are idea lists of fruits, vegetables, seafood. lean protein, nuts, whole grains, and dairy products. Step four, then shows the reader how to create meal plans using these foods. To further help the reader, each section includes a variety of healthy recipes.
A "must have" book for everyone!!.......2007-07-07
Before buying Joy Bauer's book on "Food Cures", I was always tuning into the "Today Show" to hear her health advice. I finally ordered this book, and WOW!!
From front to back covers this book is jammed-packed advice on nearly everything a person would or should do for themselves and their families. This is a book that should be required reading for anyone learning about nutrition, health and well-being.
BUY IT, YOU WILL LOVE IT!!
Book Description
Turn back your biological clock. A breakthrough book for men--as much fun to read as it is persuasive--Younger Next Year draws on the very latest science of aging to show how men 50 or older can become functionally younger every year for the next five to ten years, and continue to live like fifty-year-olds until well into their eighties. To enjoy life and be stronger, healthier, and more alert. To stave off 70% of the normal decay associated with aging (weakness, sore joints, apathy), and to eliminate over 50% of all illness and potential injuries. This is the real thing, a program that will work for anyone who decides to apply himself to "Harry's Rules."
Harry is Henry S. Lodge, M.D., a specialist in internal medicine and preventive healthcare. Chris Crowley is Harry's 70-year-old patient who's stronger today (and skiing better) than when he was 40. Together, in alternating chapters that are lively, sometimes outspoken, and always utterly convincing, they spell out Harry's Rules and the science behind them. The rules are deceptively simple: Exercise Six Days a Week. Eat What You Know You Should. Connect to Other People and Commit to Feeling Passionate About Something. The science, simplified and demystified, ranges from the molecular biology of growth and decay to how our bodies and minds evolved (and why they fare so poorly in our sedentary, all-feast no-famine culture). The result is nothing less than a paradigm shift in our view of aging.
Welcome to the next third of your life--train for it, and you'll have a ball.

Can We Live to be 150 .......2007-09-18
It is a very good book for anyone concerned about aging. We get more aware of our age at the time of retirement. Switching from a daily-work routine to a totally new idea of all-time-holidays is often not as pleasurable as we expected thirty or more years before. At that difficult time, it is very helpful to focus on the Four Pillars of Longevity as suggested by the authors of the book:
1. Six-times-a-week exercising.
2. Eating for nutrition, not for any other reason. Focusing on fruits and vegetables.
3. Avoiding boredom, developing your hobbies.
4. Connecting with many other people - creating a solid circle of friends.
The book provides some good medical background for these readers that like to understand why certain things are happening.
Another book well worth reading is Can We Live 150. It is the Body Maintenance Handbook, as the subtitle states. I like the common sense approach that is prevalent throughout the pages. Some of author's ideas, for obvious reasons, are similar to the ones presented by Crovley and Lodge, but on the whole it is a totally different book.
Younger Next Year.......2007-09-17
Great information on life changes for living a quality life beyond the age of 50.
Younger Next Year.......2007-09-16
The content is to exercise hard six days a week and little more presented in a smug and slightly condescending tone.
a guide to living like 50 until your're 80 and beyound.......2007-09-16
Anyone who is concerned about the high cost of health care and insurance should read this book. Best way to stay healthy is read this book. Both man and women need to read this book.

In Natural Hormone Balance for Women, Beverly Hills obstetrician-gynecologist Uzzi Reiss makes it clear that he believes in hormone replacement therapy for women, but not the "chemicalized hormonal substitutes" usually prescribed. "I emphasize natural hormones that are precise replicas of your own hormones," he writes, which can increase energy and memory, decrease symptoms of menopause and PMS, improve skin and mood, and enhance sleep, sexuality, and well-being. But neither the widely used hormonal medications, such as estrogens derived from horse urine, nor the "natural" hormonal products derived from soy or yams replicate the hormones produced by a woman's body. Rather, he recommends a natural estrogen formula balanced with natural progesterone, both available through compounding pharmacies (with a doctor's prescription).
Dr. Reiss and talented cowriter Martin Zucker explain why, how, and when to use natural hormones. This is not a snappy, one-size-fits-all program--rather, you, with the involvement of your physician, learn how to analyze your needs and individualize your treatment for your own optimal hormonal balance. Reiss describes the benefits and uses of natural estrogen and progesterone, then discusses other natural hormones that might be helpful: testosterone, human growth hormone, DHEA, melatonin, and pregnenolone. This is a provocative book that's worth sharing with your doctor. --Joan Price

It finally makes sense!.......2007-03-22
This book was well written for the layman. I was able to read and understand what I read and return to my doctor educated and armed with questions.
Uzzi Reiss book.......2007-03-20
Book received in new condition as promised.....delivery time acceptable. Good reliable service from Amazon and from seller.
Great book!.......2007-01-31
This book was recommended to me by my doctor after I came in to the office with many, many things wrong with me. I felt like I had neglected so many things that it was hopeless and I couldnt do anything to change how i felt. I was so exhausted ALL THE TIME yet couldnt sleep at bed time, I was dizzy, cranky, anxious among other things - just sick of feeling like crap. This book is great and breaks everything down so easily so anyone could follow this program. I am very thankful for this book but it saddens me to think that my OB really should have been telling me this a long time ago!
Wouldn't be without this Reference Book!.......2007-01-19
I've had this book for over 3 yrs., and as I am now 53 and have clearly experienced many unpleasant menopausal symptoms, I can say unequivocally, that I would have gone crazy without Dr. Reiss' expertise on this subject.
I was able to educate myself and present my case to my own wellness physician, mapping out a hormonal strategy that works! How do I spell RELIEF? Bio-identical hormone therapy! We, as women, and also the men who love us, should thank such a pioneer in women's health for providing us with the information that will make our "best years" truly great.
Book Description
From the award-winning author of the best books on puberty A completely new book written especially for 8-11-year-old girls, playfully illustrated in an appealing, two-color design.
Young girls before the onset of puberty have a curiosity about their soon-to-be changing bodies that needs addressing in a simpler way than for their older sisters. In the proven, trust-worthy, Madaras-friendly voice and style, this entirely new book now brings them the same kind of thoughtful, down-to-earth informationbut at a reading and understanding level that's just right for them.
Responding throughout to real-life questions and observations from younger girls, Madaras explores the strange and thrilling changes that are happening, or about to happen, to them, including: the development of breasts, body hair, and body fat; the changes in their reproductive organs, both inside and out; their first period and all the complex feelings surrounding it; the unwelcome appearance of acne and new body odors; and, perhaps most important, how to respect and celebrate their unique bodies, even when the outside world is not always so accepting.
Lively cartoon drawings throughout make the book not only helpful, but fun to read, too.

Good As it Gets For Me.......2007-09-24
It was a very hard decision for me to choose a book and this ended up being the one I chose for my girl. Mainly because it has alot of information and fun graphics that help make this serious topic a little more light hearted. Some of the info is a bit much for my 9 1/2 yr old but I can see her referencing back to this book later. My important focus was for my DD to understand her menstrual cycle and what is happening. It's a bit detailed regarding the female reproductive organs which I think is just a bunch of big words for her now, but like I said can be something she can reference back to as she gets older. I did like it's recognition of how these changes can make you feel awkward but the author encourages her young readers to feel proud of themselves. This book could have been better if the author had explained intercourse but apparently she has a different book for that.
There were so many books and so many varying reader reviews from not enough info to porn for the same book! For example the reviews on the American Girl My Body book are glowing but for me there was no detailed explanation as to why a woman has her cycle, there was alot of fluff that was okay for younger girls but not a girl approaching puberty. I think that shows that this is a very individual choice for each family. My reccomendation is to browse here but go to your local library or a bookstore and look before you come back to Amazon to buy. I think the best book is the one you write yourself, but since that's not going to happen it's important you have a chance to look cover to cover for the book you know your child will be reading cover to cover several times over the next few years - good luck!
Don't Forget Your Son!.......2007-09-15
I purchased this book for my 11 year old son so that he could have a better understanding of what makes girls tick. He already has a good bit of knowledge on boys body development and we wanted him to know more. This was a good general information book that explains the changes he is already seeing in some of his classmates.
"Ready, Set, Grow: A What's Happening to my Body? Book for younger Girls.......2007-08-24
Great Book! Lots of good solid information for a younger girl of 8yrs.
We did not read the whole book because it was not information she needs right now.
Good Book to start talking about growing up and changes.......2007-05-11
I notice some changes in my daughters appearance and I knew it was time to start to have some discussions. We have worked our way through two chapters reading together and talking about stuff. A heck of a lot more than I got when I was growing up. Hopefully this will help her get through these changing times
Must have for mom/daughter "TALK".......2007-04-11
This is the best book to help explain puberty to your young daughters. I did a lot of research and even purchased 3 books, and this is the only one I used. This book is very imformative while at the same time it is light and fun. It covers absolutely everything from breast growth, pimples, moodiness, body changes, sensible eating habits, periods, how to use a tampon, explanation of sex (without being too graffic), Q & A's with young girls, and finally, the last chapter deals with sexual harrassment and abuse and how a girl is to deal with either of these situations should they need to. I have twin girls that just turned 9 and I wanted to be sensitive to their young age (but also informative) as girls are maturing earlier all the time. They couldn't get enough of this book (we read it together) and noone was imbarassed or felt uncomfortable. This book turned a sensitive issue and talk into a relaxed and fun bonding experience that helped my girls prepare, without anxiety, for their future growth both emotionally and physically. I will save it for my 3 year old daughter and purchase other books from this author. Laureen E. Defiance, MO
Book Description
If you could send a letter back through time to your younger self, what would the letter say?
In this moving collection,
forty-one famous women write letters to the women they once were, filled with advice and insights they wish they had had when they were younger.
Today show correspondent Ann Curry writes to herself as a rookie reporter in her first job, telling herself not to change so much to fit in, urging her young self, “It is time to be bold about who you really are.” Country music superstar Lee Ann Womack reflects on the stressed-out year spent recording her first album and encourages her younger self to enjoy the moment, not just the end result. “Your hair matters far, far less than you think,” is the wry advice that begins the letter bestselling mystery writer Lisa Scottoline pens to her twenty-year old self. And Maya Angelou, leaving home at seventeen with a newborn baby in her arms, assures herself she will succeed on her own, even if she does return home every now and then.
These remarkable women are joined by Madeleine Albright, Queen Noor of Jordan, Cokie Roberts, Naomi Wolf, Eileen Fisher, Jane Kaczmarek, Olympia Dukakis, Macy Gray, and many others. Their letters contain rare glimpses into the personal lives of extraordinary women and powerful wisdom that readers will treasure.
Wisdom from What I Know Now
“Don’t let anybody raise you. You’ve been raised.” –Maya Angelou
“Try more things. Cross more lines.” –Breena Clarke
“Learn how to celebrate.” –Olympia Dukakis
“You don’t have to be afraid of living alone.” –Eileen Fisher
“Please yourself first…everything else follows.” –Macy Gray
“Don’t be so quick to dismiss another human being.” –Barbara Boxer
“Work should not be work.” –Mary Matalin
“You can leave the work world—and come back on your own terms.” –Cokie Roberts
“Laundry will wait very patiently.” –Nora Roberts
“Your hair matters far, far less than you think” –Lisa Scottoline
“Speak the truth but ride a fast horse.” –Kitty Kelley
Customer Reviews:
thought provoking and worth a read - share with a young woman.......2007-01-20
The main review dissed two of my favorite stories in the book - Barbara Boxer and Eileen Fisher. Different strokes, I guess. This is a quick and easy read but I find myself still thinking about it and mentioning it to friends. After I get it back from the friend I loaned it to, I'm going to write my own "what I know now" and tuck it into the book, and then send it off to my teenage nieces.
If nothing else, it is good to be reminded that we do learn much about ourselves and others over time, and that for the most part, struggles that seem insurmountable are usually survivable. Even if it hurts.
A Guide for Self-Exploration.......2007-01-10
Most of us have wondered at some time in our lives, "what if....." Letters to My Younger Self provides insight into the lives of other women and offers the reader the opportunity to ask herself: What would I write to my "younger self"?
disappointing.......2006-12-24
A book full of fluff, nothing of substance...
a good book to have on the shelf but nothing else.
Something to pass on!.......2006-06-04
I just Read Spragins amazing collection of letters and had to post this message about it. If you're looking for a meaningfull thought provoking gift this is it! This book will be cherished not just because it reveals the inner thoughts of some amazing people on our planet, but because it confirmations the inner voice in all of us that is often ignored.
This book is wonderful for young people who could use the sage advice of a mentor. It's great for people thinking about the changes they want to make in their life. It's also a good way to stimulate you to write your own letter.
After reading "Letters to My Younger Self" I wrote a letter to myself about what I wished I'd known 20 years ago. The experience was very helpfull. It allowed me to think about the past and contemplate the future in a way I hadn't before.
A Lesson in Reflection.......2006-05-12
I found this book as I was looking for a gift for my daughter's college graduation. The concept seemed incredible to me so I grabbed it up and brought it home. Reading the letters inpired me to write my own letter. I wrote a letter to myself 23 years before, pregnant with my daughter. The process of reflection was intense for me. I cried as I remembered the fears I had--the uncertainty. My sister called as I was writing this letter and the two of us went even farther back than 23 years. We remembered each other as children--when we were unable to communicate our fears. Our conversation helped our relationship and helped me to finish my letter to myself. In the end, my letter to me became my gift to my daughter. Without this book, all this reflection would be lost.

For women seeking complexion perfection, Dr. Nicholas Perricone is the name to know; actress Courteney Cox counts herself among his many devotees. In The Perricone Promise, he claims that his 28-day program will help stop and even reverse the aging process, making anyone who follows his advice "look and feel ten years younger." Perricone says the brain and the skin both start out as the same embryonic tissue, so it follows that any efforts aimed at improving one's complexion will also improve one's memory and overall sense of well-being.
To this end, he recommends a three-pronged approach: a very specific 28-day diet; supplements taken morning, noon, and night; and his own line of "topical" cosmetics, all aimed at boosting the body's levels of "peptides and neuropeptides." These substances, according to Perricone, are not only the building blocks of the skin's collagen, but an integral part of the functioning of the immune system, and may prevent inflammation in the body that's associated with such illnesses as arthritis and heart disease.
Perricone's diet sensibly includes a "rainbow" of fruits and vegetables and the liberal use of herbs and spices, and shuns any foods browned or cooked at high temperatures. But unfortunately, some of the food combinations sound less than appetizing (typical snack: "1-2 ounces sliced turkey or chicken breast, 3 olives, 3 strawberries, 8 ounces water"). His eponymous supplements and cosmetics are also pretty pricey, but as far as Perricone's fans are concerned, when it comes to putting the brakes on the aging process, you get what you pay for. --Erica Jorgensen

Great Diet.......2007-08-01
I tried Perricone's diet and it makes me feel good and active. He has done his research and is aware of the new products available. I did not try the supplements. I felt they are over priced.
Ok I guess.......2007-07-02
It has a lot of great detailed data and things like that...BUT in the end it is the same ole addage that we all know: Eat right, Sleep enough, Exercise, and be positive. LESS Alcohol, stress, bad carbs...
given as a gift.......2007-06-27
One of the Christmas gifts given to my daughter in 2005. I am sure she was satisfied; I did not receive a feedback from her
The Smart-Aging Bible.......2007-06-10
Dr. Nicholas Perricone is perhaps the leading expert on "smart-aging" diet and nutritional supplements.
His advice on the best foods / beverages and the most scientifically-advanced nutritional supplements is FAR ahead of any other "expert" out there.
Being in the nutritional supplement industry, I can vouch that what he says about specific supplements is scientifically accurate.
I especially like what he says about the nutrients Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Benfotiamine (fat-soluble vitamin B1) and Carnosine as being the most powerful "age-fighting" supplements avialable.
For those of you who can afford the supplements...and some of the foods he recommends, I can virtually guarantee you that you will see & feel results very fast.
For those of you that complain about how much the foods / supplements / cosmaceuticals cost..."don't shoot the messenger" (Dr. Perricone)...he doesn't set the prices on most of these products - especially the foods and supplements.
The alternative is to keep eating the typical "Standard American Diet" (ironically called SAD), so you can continue to look and feel like hell, and set yourself up for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, macular degeneration and all the "wonderful" things associated with getting older.
He is sharing the science of "smart-aging" with you, so you can make highly informed / educated decisions about what foods / supplements / skincare products to use to feel & look your absolute best.
Do your doctors share this information with you?
His skin products don't work. His diet isn't new (and imperfect).......2006-08-10
It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.
His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.
And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.
