I felt so lost and out of control, I didn't know where to turn - so immediately searched for a book on the subject of infidelity. I was at first hesitant after reading a review claiming the author places blame for the affair on the betrayed spouse -BUT - After reading this book as a betrayed spouse, I believe this is NOT the case.
What she DOES do is address both the wayward spouse and the betrayed spouse equally when taking an honest and often hard look at the relationship before the Affair took place - where there was breakdown in the marriage that may have lead up to the affair. She does clearly state that the wayward spouse IS responsible for their actions and the affair - after all, no one can FORCE someone to CHEAT.
But thankfully, this books delves far beyond finger pointing, and looks for a way to bring partners back toward one another, by dealing with issues in the marriage rather than sweeping them under the carpet. It does this in a supportive, non-judgmental way, that both sides can feel comfortable pursuing. And she gives us simple yet important exercises to do, and action plans to follow, to help us get there. It's a book to be devoured in one sitting, and then read and reread countless times as needed through the different stages of grieving and healing. This book is a true marriage saver - at least, it is for us, and I hope it can be for you, too.
Let me put it as simply as I can:
I (Betrayed Wife) couldn't put this book down, I was so thirsty for understanding - and cried tears of relief when I felt validated in both my feelings and reactions surrounding the discovery of the infidelity.
My husband (Wayward Husband) skimmed through the book with great interest, then went straight to the closest bookstore and bought his own copy. We both now are in our second readings, all the while making lots of notes in the margins, and doing the simple exercises that pop up from time to time. It has helped us to each understand what the other spouse is going through and may be thinking, and has helped us find a way to relate to one another productively.
We have come a long way in two short weeks, and although I know we still have a long way to go, I don't think we would have made it this far (and remained best friends, as we are) without the help in this book.
In fact, the end chapters on Forgiveness are so good, we've also purchased 'How Can I Forgive You' by the same author, to delve even deeper into the moving forward stage of healing and forgiving.
I would recommend these books immediately to any woman I love - and to any couple or man I care deeply about, too - if they found themselves facing infidelity.
For anyone out there hurting this much right now, I feel your pain, confusion and shock - and want you to know you aren't alone. Get this book and you'll see what I mean - you won't be sorry you did.

After the Affair is a comprehensive and insightful manual that has provided extraordinary help in my life and Im sure will help millions. It helped me to get through the crisis and shock after finding out that my partner was having an affair. It explained the "normal" feelings and helped me to gain insight into what i was going through. After an affair there are of course choices you have. You can stay with your partner and make a committment to working on the relationship or you can move on to the new adventure that awaits you. This time in your life can be truly transformative. This book offers practical information on rebuilding trust if you choose that path. Personally I got a lot out of the book but I chose to move on with my life. The answer lies within your heart. You just need to listen closely. Highly recommended reading for anyone dealing with this challenging situation.

I was not impressed by the advice in this book.I think no two affairs are the same, neither are all waywards or all betrayed spouses.Her approach seemed to be very one size fits all.Maybe it will help some people but it doesn't help all.The old adage of bad marriage=affair needs to be looked at again.Sometimes there are seriously messed up people that have affairs and fixing the 'broken marriage' will NOT fix them.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a great treatment of key issues facing families transitioning significant wealth across generations.
This is not a tedious discussion of dry, technical strategies requiring an LLM in taxation to understand. Rather, it is an analysis of ways to maximize the long-term positive impacts of wealth on a family while minimizing the negative ones.
While this book would be a helpful read for anyone concerned about leaving heirs more than just money, I think families with estates over $5MM would find some of the advice most directly applicable to the challenges they face.
Family Wealth - Keeping it in the Family.......2007-02-16
As an advisor, preparing for my first Family Meeting, I found this more helpful than most other books on Family Governance. I really liked the way in which it talks about not just financial capital, and social capital, but human & intellectual capital as well. It resonated well with me and with my Family Office clients. It gives more of a structure for developing the governance model than other books I've seen.

Chapter 1 applied most directly to my situation, and this chapter alone makes the book worth having on my shelf. Hughes' perspective, from both his own family and his experience advising other families, gives the book authority.
Often family wealth seems to be treated as a "dirty little secret" where money concerns trump people concerns. Hughes provides a framework where financial, human, and intellectual assets can all be considered. He shows that family wealth can be a path towards growth of individuals, families, and their wealth, through investments, philanthropy, and professional development.

My husband had an affair with a co-worker for about a year and I just found out on July 1st of this year. The devastation felt was overwhelming and you cannot think straight nor understand the why of the entire thing. This book gave me a road map to understanding my husbands actions and weakness since we have been married for 30 yrs and he never did anything like this before. We had a happy and relatively good marriage so that made it more difficult to understand. It has helped both my husband and I to overcome the guilt, shame, anger and hurt that a betrayal of this type brings to a so called "Happily Married Couple." We are on the road to recovery and are closer and more intimate than we have been in years.
I hightly recommend this book to anyone who has been unfaithful or has been betrayed.

I appreciate this book so much. Shirley Glass sure knows her stuff. I went through a nightmare of grief, feeling like my whole world had shattered this summer when I found out that my husband had been keeping secrets, having numerous emotional affairs during the past few years and a porn obsession. After giving his emotional energy to others and his sexual energy to porn, he had absolutely nothing left over for me, and our marriage of 26 years nearly ended. I no longer felt safe in the relationship and felt like I was going crazy. We're trying to get our relationship back on track and this book has been very educational and helpful in understanding infidelity, why affairs happen, how to prevent them from happening, and what to expect afterward. It was reassuring to know that I wasn't crazy--that the whirlwind of grief, anger, and other volatile emotions I was feeling was normal in the aftermath of such a betrayal. There is also a section on healing that I've found very helpful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered from an unfaithful spouse.

This is an excellent read for a person who has experienced a heart-breaking end to a relationship. Most of what is written is common sense but too often common sense flys out the window when a person is involved in a highly-charged, emotional break-up. I believe the book would benefit both men and women but I think it will draw its largest readership from women.
Stability, Hope and Self-Love When Your Mind is Spinning .......2007-06-18
I am a very private person, even in my pain. However, the help this book provided me in the time of my crisis was irreplaceable and as I feel there may be others who are experiencing what I experienced or have gone through the pain of either emotional or sexual infidelity with their partners, my need to praise and review this book went beyond me and my need for privacy in order to possibly help someone else. From cover to cover it was as if Dr. Glass was reading my mind, the mind of my spouse, had already anticipated his and my actions and was uncovering the layers of the betrayal partner with precision, which as I unearthed more information, shined clear through like an xtray into her character and actions. This book helped me to calm my mind and spirit and understand the many angles that are created to birth the possibility of an affair into existence. My husband and I suffered some set backs, mostly related to the aspect of "lies of omission" and/or our being separated for four months, but Dr. Glass' book was with me and later us(he later agreed to read the book) each step with timely precision. Although it has been over three years since the disclosure of my spouse's emotionally intimate betrayal, which itself lasted for almost three years, I still find solice in Dr. Glass' work when "triggered" by certain reminders or behavior in myself or from my husband. She was a definite godsend to me at a time I thought my implicit trust was my own undoing. I literally cried when I found out she had passed. I felt her work blessed me that much. After 15 years of marriage, both I and my husband attempt to be vigilent in using many of the ideas and suggestions Dr. Glass puts forth in her book to maintain proper "windows" and "walls" with regards to our opposite sex relationships/friendships. Yes, it takes time to heal, learn to love your partner again and refocus on your relationship/marriage if it is truly what you want. I would also recommend this book as a gift to newly married couples or those embarking on an agreed long-term committed relationship. Lastly, as I recently learned the betrayal partner in my saga married just this year, I can only say that I hope if by chance she reads this, she has grown with integrity and has come to understand what it will take to keep her marriage safe, close and loving. This is an excellent little book of thoughts on the nature of trust. It's profound yet attention-grabbing; written in bite-sized chapters - which, taken a piece at a time, make encouraging and positive 'thought food' for a day. Well written and a good buy for the discerning reader.
Inspiring Reading.......2004-01-21
"In order to trust God we must view our adverse circumstances through eyes of faith, not our senses," we're told in the first few pages of this wonderful book. Chuck Swindoll goes on to tell us how to do that. He describes people who reflect a quiet, peaceful calm as being those individuals who have cultivated a perfect trust in God. Such a mindset liberates one to be the distinctive person God intended.
Swindoll writes from a profoundly deep perspective. Only an author who has been tested himself could write the following:
"God has trusted each of us with our own set of unfair circumstances and unexplained experiences to deal with. Can we still trust in Him even if He never tell us why?"
He goes on to answer the question he posed by saying, "..it's good simply because God Himself has allowed it. Acceptance is resting in God's goodness."
Job of the Old Testament is used to illustrate complete acceptance of God's will. Job trusted God totally, although he did not understand what was occurring in his life.
Read the section on worry. He offers five problems associated with it that enable you to see its deceptive powers. He also helps you to overcome it. I strongly recommend this book. It will deepen your relationship with God if you read it with the proper mindset.

This book is inspiring in the way that it encourages people to trust God. Perhaps I should've given it two stars but what dissappointed me within reading the first two pages were the statements of"....we deserve judgement" and "he was a 'godly' fugitive". Perhaps being a little over-analytical or precise I would like to comment that man, himself is not godly. Thus, using the word "godly" to discribe someone who wishes to follow "God's ways" should not be described as "godly" due to its misleading implications. Second of all, the book should be precise on "we deserve judgement". Yes it is true that Jesus Christ is Lord of All and that this book has much good coming from it's pages, but one must wonder if the good that is meant to encourage can be ruined with inaccurate text that does not coalign with scripture. God is the righteous judge and although we do not deserve His mercy, He is a God most of all of Love & Truth. Please understand that I am not bashing this book. There are a lot of encouraging passages, but the "spider scenario" and other statements are misleading and do not rely all on scripture. One should still satisfy ones curiosity and may do so in "borrowing" this book. But in order for one to be a "careful" and "passionate" christian one should not be afraid to question what one is reading.

Great Book.......2007-03-05
I bought this book in the aftermath of my divorce. While reading the book, I realized I had been betrayed by most people close to me, all situations I had supressed to avoid conflict. This book helped me to become aware of my own weaknesses so that I am able to better prevent more betrayls in the future. You can not control the way others act or how they treat you, but you can learn to better control your own emotions and not let those people get the best of you. This was a great book! I loved it so much I gave it to my ex husband upon our divorce. Maybe it will help him out in his next relationship.
Nothing new here.......2005-07-06
This is actually not a terrible book; it's just not a book for someone who has already been researching and reading up on how to heal a broken heart after a betrayal. I bought it expecting some new insight and/or advice, but mostly it's a "beginner's primer" that defines betrayal, looks at childhood and how this figures in, etc. Very elementary, very basic. If you're just starting down the road to recovery after betrayal, and have not spent years talking to a therapist and reading books about it, as I have, then this particular book is probably a good place to start. Just don't expect any concrete advice or specific direction. It just isn't here.
No Real Trust after Betrayal.......2004-06-27
Once trust is broken, it is much like a glass window; it cannot be fixed. It can be taped, glued, pieced together, etc. It can never be the intact and unbroken window it once was. Some things just cannot be fixed as if they never occurred. With that in mind, the emphasis is on whether or not one wishes to fix it and why, and the decision to return a trust that is broken, decisions that always determine the value of the relationship and how deeply woven and connected it is. Recovery from broken trust (not trusts) lies in gently picking up the broken pieces, putting them in some type of order, and attempting to keep them there, an almost impossible task, and one too often for objective professionals. Success is tenuous at best, and unsatisfying at worst because both generally mourn what might have been had the trust not been broken, and the relationship unimpaired by those lingering ghosts. Most do not trust once the trust has been broken, but simulate an appearance of trust that is usually a small fraction of that which was thrown away by the deceiver, and which was forced onto the victim, by the knowledge of the deceit.

This book says a lot with few words; it might almost require a second reading to absorb all it has to offer. It gave me insight into the motives of others and invaluable perspective on my own unconscious contributions to some of the "betrayals" I have experienced.
Soul searching read!.......2002-10-08
"How could you do this to me?" helped me put my thoughts in order. I had pretty much figured out what had happened in my life - why the betrayal took place, why it happened to me and where I needed to go from there. The problem was that it was all so jumbled in my head and I was so emotionally charged that nothing seemed to make sense. I have been able to search my soul, am putting my thoughts together in an orderly fashion in order to move on with my life now.

I was hoping this book would be a useful resource for developing supplemental activities for an elementary-level (K-5) curriculum on non-violence and conflict resolution. But it is really geared toward parents (as the title indicates), not educators. The activities and required materials are suitable for an interpersonal setting, not really for the average classroom or after school programs. I found that 104 Activities That Build: Self-Esteem, Teamwork, Communication, Anger Management, Self-Discovery, Coping Skills by Alanna Jones, was more useful for my needs/goals.

This is an interesting and useful book. It provides a wide range of activities to use with children to help them learn about themselves and understanding others. Many of the activities offer ways to accommodate for older or younger audiences, and some are specific to ages. The range of topics addressed is rather inclusive, and the activities are designed to appeal to all types of learners (visual, auditory, kinesthetic). The activities offer a creative approach to each topic, and are nice springboards for deeper discussions. I am certain this book will be utilized both in my home and in my classroom!

But when individuals lose their capacity to trust others because of some painful past experience, their ability to function in our interconnected, social world is severely limited. Grounding this book is the author's own concept of the three core selves: the adult, the child, and the protector. Each of these personae influences trust. Learning to be trustworthy.......2006-04-25
I recently had someone come back into my life that I lied to by omission. Our second time around he was having trouble trusting me. I told a white lie and he blew up. I was sitting there scratching my head thinking what's his problem. I decided to order some books about trust to get a handle on my issue with lying. This book has shown me why I choose to not be truthfull all the time. I am trying to protect myself from how I think the person will react by knowing the truth. I'm not trustfull or trustworthy. I this book is really helping me see a better way to be.
A primer on trust.......2006-01-19
The issue of trust -- of others and of myself -- comes up all the time. Whom do I really trust, and how do I build trust with people whom I would like to trust more? How much can I safely let back in people who have betrayed my trust in the past? What moves can I make that will make me more trustworthy? Cynthia Wall's exercises are often helpful in clarifying underlying blocks, allowing me to go much deeper into the real issues.
I am in a process of exploring this issue with my women's group this year; it's a very rich and scary topic. The Courage to Trust is a valuable, compassionate guide for us in this exploration. I think anyone who has ever been betrayed or disappointed by someone will find helpful support in this beautifully and thoughtfully written book.
This book is not the solution or cure, but a path to these things........2005-11-10
There are several books on the market that address various issues. Few of them actually offer the cure or solution. This book tries to offer the solution or cure in the form of various graphs, charts and exercises. The book caused me to put in writing various things that happened to me 20-30 years ago that made me cry just by writing them down. Obviously, these were still oozing wounds covered by a bandaid. The book was very good in that sense. It was bad in the sense that it assumed you had people in your life you could trust. I think that if you had people in your life you trusted, you really wouldn't buy such a book. I think once a person goes this route; they are at their wits ends as to how to find and discern such people.
Especially frustrating to me was the graphs and pie charts that stated to put all of these people on a chart and state how they help you, hurt you and so forth. I just don't see how that helps you. On the other hand, one exercise stated to list some goals you had for yourself and order them. Well, you normally think of buy a house, become rich and so forth, but after reading the book, you find that certain unexpected goals become more important.
Anyway, this book is very good for helping you to identify why you have trust issues. The book, like all other self-help books, leads you towards the conclusion YET AGAIN that you need a good therapist.
connecting to your trust issues.......2005-09-26
For any of you who have been hurt--by a dysfunctional family situation or an adult betrayal--this book is helping me to connect how the past is inhibiting me from having all life has to offer. After reading the first 20 pages, I had a few tactics and goals to make a difference in my life. It also confirmed for me that self-trust is the basis for the other types. It's well worth the investment in time and money.
