As a corporate lawyer Living in Mexico City Amazon is a fantastic tool which gives me access to many books I would otherwise find impossible to get. The speed is quite amazing too!

Nice Look; Very Useful.......2006-06-24

I bought this dictionary along with the pocket version for school. Although I do agree with the prior rating that the cover could be slightly nicer, I am happy with my purchase. My cover has not scratched nor bent. I find the tabs very helpful.
The book looks very nice on my bookshelf, and the other hardbacks that I have viewed are not much cheaper. If you are looking to save money, buy the pocket edition. But, if you are going to spend the money for a hardback, I would suggest something that is not only useful but looks nice as well.

Not all that deluxe.......2004-12-18

I have to preface my review with a caveat: Black's is indispensible and if you're reading this, you need it. Also, I haven't looked through it extensively and so don't purport to rate this edition over the last one, just this deluxe version.

Having said that, I can't recommend this particular version with cheap-ish vinyl/leatherette cover and thumb indexing.

I just bought this deluxe version a few days ago for my sister who is going to enter law school in the fall. I decided that though the regular 7th version has served me well, she deserves the best. While this is surely the best, it is certainly not worth $40+ more than the regular version.

I feel like this $100 book will look like a pretty weak stand-alone present for her now that I've taken a close look at it; it's just a little underwhelming.

The cover, whatever it is, looks a little cheap and scratches and indents very easily. It already looks used and did not come sealed.

The binding and overall workmanship seems to be on par with the regular edition I looked at (and the one I own), which is to say mediocre.

The thumb indexing is a plus, and I guess that some people could desire that option enough to warrant the higher price.

Also, the paper is of noticeably higher quality, more like a nice library quality Webster's than a regular book. But I never noticed that the paper in my previous edition was lacking until Barrister Books told me.

The only other noteworthy thing about this particular version is the double take the cashier did when the price came up.

Really, I don't think you can justify that jump in price, if they could do something special for an additional $40-50 (i.e. leather, better binding, jewel encrusted carrying case) it would be worth looking into. There is a deluxe edition in a slipcase for $30 more, but there is no picture of it online and my school's bookstore didn't stock it and I'm sure it is the same book otherwise.

Al in all, a great reference with a marginal upgrade.

This bible is like a jack hammer made into a work of art.
Watch when you break out this bible, it is like showing up to a north side high school ball game in an 8 door limo, with go team painted on it.
Folks treat ya like - "E. F. Hutton" - you remember the commercials where everyone gets real quite so as to hear anything he might say.
Warning when you whip out a serious bible like this, people expect you to either be a seeker or a teacher.
Way to nice to be used as a door stop!
If there is a seeker or teacher in your life that you would like to bring a tear of joy to - put this bible in their hands, and be ready with your camera. Most excellent, ***** Highly Recommended!

The One From Kirkbride.......2007-09-05

I have read that some are buying the NKJV Thompson-Chain Reference Bible and getting a Bible of lower quality this time. I didn't know what it was all about until I bought one for sale at a bookstore one time. After noticing that the pages where glued instead of sewn, I investigated (they can't be messing with my Thompson)! Anyway,here is what I found out. If you want the quality made one you have to get one that comes from the original publisher Kirkbride Publishing company. They sold the right to Nelson Publishers to publish the Thompson Chain as well at a lower price. The one from Nelson Publishers (ask before you order) is the lower quality, but the one from Kirkbride is the higher quality. I pray that this has helped. Pastor Aaron Gravett

Declining Quality---What a Shame!.......2007-08-28

Years ago(not too many years, though) Thompson Bibles from Kirkbride were a quality product. There was Morrocco Leather, Cowhide, Bonded Leather. The smooth and thick Cowhide leather has disappeared, and has been replaced aby some sort of Levant(pebble)grained madness that sells for $84.99, versus the $89.99 of the Cowhide. Definitely not worth it! There are now Bonded Leather editions in some horrible shade of bright purple, and also a forest green---both with black ribbon markers---is Kirkbride so cheap they can no longer afforsd to coordinate the ribbons? Also, most of the ribbon markers are cut very short, so they serve no purpose since there is nothing to hold onto...then there is this miserable Kirvella substance, which comes in Ivory, Grey, and Black. As soon as you hold the open Bible in your hands, the spine caves in. I don't care for red print in the Gospels, but the red-letter is now pink on some pages, or very light red, and hard to read. Bleed through with the inferior-quality paper. Need I go on(there IS more), or have I made my point as to quality?
The helps in the Bible are excellent and unchanged. The Thompson has been around for going-on 100 years, and still sells, so something must be right. You can learn much from the Thompson Bible. It's almost a Bible school between the pages. Unfortunately, the product quality now stinks, but the outrageous prices continue. Your choice.

KJV Bible of Choice.......2007-08-16

I love KJV bibles and own several different kinds of KJV bibles. However, the KJV Thompson Chain-Reference Bible is the one I would take with me if I were to be away from home for a long time. This bible uses scripture to back up scripture, less of man's input and more of the holy word. I love the way the chain references was set up and ton's of bible information at the back. I could take this bible with me anywhere and enjoy every minute of learning subjects and issues based on scripture and the excellent chain references. I always look forward to reading the KJV with this bible. I purchased the large print because it makes it easier to read the sideline scripture references and because I am going on 50. If you're looking for the only KJV bible for your home or if you know someone who loves the KJV bible and needs a replacement, this is the bible I highly recommend and the one I would buy for love ones. May the holy bible transform and renew your mind, that you may prove what is good, acceptable and the will of God.

This Bible is just right for me. I often serve as a pulpit supply preacher in churches within my area. Because I am never certain of the lighting conditions at the pulpit I will encounter (a lot of my colleagues must have better eyesight), even when using reading glasses, the text is difficult to distinguish in smaller cased text.

The print size of this font, plus my reading glasses, should suffice in even the worst of church lighting conditions.

The Bible dimension is perfect to attach my notes (I use a rubber band) within the Bible. The Bible also fits nicely in my hand.

Don't Listen To The Nay-Sayer's - This One Is A Winner.......2007-05-11

Before making this purchase I spent hours engrossed in comparison shopping. After making all of the camparisons I made my selection, this selection. But before making the purchase, I read all 18 of the previous reviews and determined that at least 3 different publications, including this one, had been reviewed. Most of the negative comments were made regarding other versions of the NASB. So when considering this product, please take all of that negativity with a grain of salt.

So here goes my two-cents worth.
After many years of "Bible Study", (most of my life), it occured to me that I had engaged in much study, but very little actual reading of the Bible. So at the tender age of 59 I have made it my GOAL to read God's Word start to finish. YUP -- THE WHOLE THING! I wanted a translation that was easy to read and understand, and was in large print for the sake of my tired old eyes. It had to be small enough to hold in any situation, travel with me when necessary, and soft bound for ease of handling. This publication has all of that and more.

The text is contemporary in style and provides an understandable and easy reading experience, without losing any of the true impact of God's message in the translation. The paper is thin, but no more so than many other Bible translations I have used, and perfect to support the large print with as few pages as possible in order to conserve on size and weight. The flexible binding, while not real leather, is comfortable in the hand, yet strong, well made and durable. Oh and by the way, I don't need a ribbon to mark my progress. I have a special, personalized bookmark from my daughter that serves that purpose very nicely.

Oh I know; there are some nay-sayers who may fault the NASB for not being literal enough. But I consider this to be an advantage for those who just want to enjoy reading God's Word, and who want to let the Bible speak to them in a way they can understand. I have often found literal translations to be tedious and difficult to follow. I have done enough comparison studies to know that God's message rings true in this translation, as well as in any others. Keep in mind, this publication was meant to provide an easy to read version of God's Word, the Holy Bible, accurate, but meant to be enjoyed. It was not published for use as a keystone study guide.

Sure, I know that the NASB translation committee chose to remove God's personal name, a practice that I dispute and do not agree with. But I don't need to see it in print to know that "The LORD's" name is Jehovah, or to understand the truth about his message and purpose for man. The same principle holds true for other minor doctrinal disputes. The truth of God's Word will always shine through to the reader who desires to understand it.

To sum it up -- This version of the NASB is everything that I had hoped it would be. Perfect for comfortable reading, or balancing on my lap for reference during group Bible studies. The convenient print size and contemporary, (not clunky), language of the NASB flows comfortably and makes this translation of the Holy Bible a pleasure to simply read and enjoy. So much so that while reading I find that the time flies by and when I finally close it and set it down until the next time, I find myself relaxed and at peace. I'm no "Bible Thumper", but for the first time in my life I really look forward to my daily reading, not studying, just reading, every day.

For simple reading pleasure, at under $20 you won't find a better deal, or more enjoyable version of the NASB translation of the Bible on the market. My copy has become one of my best friends.

A little closer to the goal.......2007-05-08

According to the preface, the NASB was designed to be consistent with the ancient languages. But analysis of the Old Testament shows it is only 66% consistent with Hebrew and Aramaic. So you cannot do serious bible study without using a concordance to refer to the original roots. The extra resources in this version are helpful. Not quite what I expected.......2007-03-27

I bought this bible expecting a leather-bound edition, as it was advertised, but it was a leather-look, so I returned it, and orderd one at CBD. The bible itself is great, handy size, yet comfortable print, many references, which to me makes a bible a real help. Again, it was not the fault of the book itself, only a mistake in the way it was presented. All I had to do was return it, and got a full refund. I love doing business with Amazon!!

Way Too Much Yeast but Good For Itching Ears I Suppose.......2007-09-26

Too much yeast.

The 14th Chapter of 1 Corinthians is really tough on folks who believe that certain spiritual gifts are no longer available to the Church today.

In a note on 1 Corinthians 14:2-39 in the MacArthur Study Bible, John MacArthur states:

" Although it is not indicated consistently in some translations, the distinction between the singular tongue and the plural tongues is foundational to the proper interpretation of this chapter. Paul seems to use the singular to distinguish the counterfeit gift of pagan gibberish and the plural to indicate the genuine gift of a foreign language."

Well let's see. Let's substitute "pagan gibberish" for "a tongue" and "foreign languages" for "tongues" in 1 Cor 14.

I've used the ESV but similar results are obtained from other translations.
For the moment let's ignore 1 Cor 14:2. Verses 1 Cor 14:3 through 14:25 don't exactly support MacArthur's hypotheses but at least they don't refute it either.

Unfortunately, verses 26-28 show how ridiculous the artificial distinction MacArthur makes between singular and plural tongues really is.

26 What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, (pagan gibberish), or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. 27 If any speak in (pagan gibberish), let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. 28 But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in church and speak to himself and to God.

OK, if MacArthur is right, these three verses have Paul giving instructions to the Corinthians on how to properly pray to false gods in an orderly fashion. Oh wait, even MacArthur realizes that this can't be and tries to explain it by stating in his note on 1 Cor 14:2 "The only exception is in vv. 27, 28 (see note there), where it refers to a single person speaking a single genuine language. no one understands him; ... in the spirit he speaks mysteries" Sadly he doesn't explain how, since the text says nothing of the sort, MacArthur knows that these verses are an exception, or how MacArthur knows it is referring to a single person speaking in a genuine language (after all MacArthur's whole *cough-cough* foundational *cough-cough* premise is that tongues singular = gibberish and tongues plural = foreign languages). Apparently the premise really is "tongues singular = gibberish and tongues plural = a foreign language except when it leads to a conclusion I (MacArthur) don't like".

So lets' look at 1 Cor 14:2.

In a note on 1 Corinthians 14:2 in the MacArthur Study Bible, John MacArthur states:

The spirit by which they spoke was not the Holy Spirit, but their own human spirit or some demon; and the mysteries they declared were the type associated with the pagan mystery religions, which was espoused to be the depths that only the initiated few were privileged to know and understand.

So does 1 Cor 14:2 really mean something along the lines of?

For one who speaks in pagan gibberish speaks not to men but to a god; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries of the type associated with the pagan mystery religions by his own human spirit or some demon.

In the same note on 1 Corinthians 14:2 in the MacArthur Study Bible, John MacArthur states:

he who speaks in a tongue . . . does not speak to men but to God. This is better translated, "to a god." The Gr. text has no definite article (see similar translation in Acts 17:23, "an unknown god"). Their gibberish was worship of pagan deities. . ."

In this note, John MacArthur uses the same rationale as Jehovah's Witnesses use on John 1:1 (" . . . and the Word was God") - JWs claim that this is better translated, "and the Word was a god" since the Gr. text has no definite article . If this doesn't make you wonder a bit about John MacArthur's hermeneutical skills, then do this . . Locate a single English translation that translates 1 Cor 14:2 the way MacArthur does. Good luck, none of them do.

Oh, and speaking of a lack of definite articles, spirit (pneuma) lacks one as well so translators insert "his" or "the" in front of spirit in English translations. Why doesn't MacArthur mention this? Well perhaps because a legitimate translation is "in the Spirit" with spirit capitalized because the reference actually refers to the Holy Spirit. This happens to be the choice the translators of the English Standard Version made. As Cessesstionist, Reformed, Calvinistic, and Non-Charismatic/Pentecostal as most of them seem to be, they treated the text honestly and did not put a denominational bias on their work.

14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. (ESV)

Consider what that means. And read Romans 8:26.

Or would you prefer the IMHO inaccurate and frankly odd way John MacArthur might have you read it. They can't both be correct can they?

This Bible is replete with truths and factual information. The serious Bible student will appreciate how factual and inciteful the study helps are. Can't imagine how this Bible as a study guide could be improved upon.

I really liked this bible as the letters are not so small and there're complete explanations on every page.
It's really a good for Christians.
I am a teenager and haven't read bible; I'm a beginner.
It doesn't seem as dull as other bibles.
But it'd be better to buy one with leather cover if you can afford.
Hard cover is not safe enough as the book is very thick.
Only careless people can keep it for long.

Excellent Study Bible Resource.......2007-05-25

As a pastor, I personally use this Bible to study and preach from, as I know that good, trusted Bible commentary is hard to find these days. I also am able to highly recommend this Bible to other folks for their personal study Bible, especially for new believers, as this will help them to grow spiritually. I know that Pastor John MacArthur preaches and teaches the whole truth of God's Word. There are many Bibles out there, but not very many with excellent study notes that we can trust. Wonderful illustrated Bible!.......2007-06-02

The page layout is very easy to read. All the historical, archeological etc. information given at the beginning of each book is great background info on the book and author. The photos, diagrams, maps and other illustrations are a wonderful, colorful addition that brings the Bible to life. I did find one page that was about 1/16th of an inch narrower than the other pages. It is heavy to hold and makes my wirsts tired, so I prefer to set it on a table when reading.

I really love this Bible. First off, the translation is great -- simple modern English, with no liberties taken in the translation. None of this gender-neutral stuff like the TNIV. Secondly, the Bible is very well put together. The bonded leather cover is of the heavy top-quality variety. I have difficulty distinguishing it from the Holman cowhide leather editions. And lastly, the study information is great. They introduce the chapters and explain how the old and new testament chapters work together to form the basis of the Christian Bible. No hesitations -- buy it. This is a thick Bible. If you're looking for something thinner go with the Holman CSB ultrathin bibles -- they are awesome too but no study notes. And again, very well built.

Simple & Elegant Reading Edition.......2007-10-07

ISBN-0: 0310905818 (stamped in gold on the back cover) is the indexed, 12-point font, black bonded leather edition. It is an especially lovely, well made Bible. The leather is supple and sumptuous. It has an end-of-paragraph reference system that is minimal, non-invasive, and does not intrude on the flow of reading; double columns are divided with a thin unobtrusive vertical line.

It is without center column notes, and contains a "large-print" concordance that is fairly legible; however, the font is only about 7 points. The overall look and "feel" of this Bible is particularly pleasing. Zondervan's tout of "Extensive study helps" is grossly exaggerated. The strong suit of this edition is mainly the comfortable feel and font size that make for a comfortable read.

This Bible is Not Leather Bound as Described - it's "Leather-Look".......2007-03-21

Be careful. This Bible is not Leather Bound. It's "leather-Look," kind of cheap-looking. I checked the ISBN and I received the correct item, but it's not leather, and it's not soft. I doubt it will hold up very well for very long.

NIV Large Print Reference Bible.......2007-03-08

Zondervan publishes many types of NIV bibles. I like the format and easy reading of this font size (11.5). This bible does not have the "bleed through" of Christ text in red present in several other of thier bibles availble today.

The translation, font size has worked very well for me. These older eyes do need help and this bible fills that need.

I ordered this Large Print Bible for my husband. He loves it. The easy-to-handle size, the indented tabs, the easy-to-comprehend translation. Everything is just perfect. And it arrived so quickly.

The best bible in NKJV.......2007-09-01

I was looking for a smallish/portable bible for some time and this is finally it! Most small bibles reduce the text size so much that I have to hold it an inch from my nose to read it----not this one, its got big text. Plus it has the thumb indentations so I can quickly find the right book to go to when the pastor says the verse. Excellent color maps in back were a nice touch too. Leather cover is thick and durable, as is the binding. Only complaint is that it has that gold finishing on the top and sides of the pages which looks nice but it comes off on my fingers after awhile. Plus, I wouldve preferred silver if anything. Note: It says "King James Version" in the title but its not...its actually NKJV (which it also says in the title)--I took a gamble and won (I wanted NKJV).

Practical and useful........2007-03-24

I have looked for many years for a user friendly NKJV bible. This is the one. I enjoy the words of Jesus in Red. I enjoy that very much. To those of you who say that the red letter version is a distraction, GOOD! It is supposed to be an attention getter. It is the Word of God!! DUH!!
This bible is user friendly becouse of its large print (I teach from the pulpit and carry it with me to read at lunch) and its thin size which makes it easier to take with me into public. The Quality has been good so far. I am sad to say that I am very hard on bibles. I use them!!! I do not keep them hidden in church or in the back window of my car. I recomend this bible. Another Classic from Holman.......2007-04-04

This is an excellent Bible - and very affordable for a Bible of such high quality.

First the text: The Holman Christian Standard Bible features the reliable HCSB text. An excellent feature of this text is that it puts Old Testament quotes in bold letters in the New Testament, which reveals how prophecy was fulfilled or highlights where references to the Old Testament are quoted by NT writers. For me, this adds to the reading experience and helps connect both the Old and New Testaments.

Second, the font: The font is good on the eyes. The lettering stands out well on the paper and the page presentation is clean and attractive.

Third, the presentation and display on the pages: When I opened the box and saw this Bible, I was really delighted. It lives up to its name of being "Ultra Thin", but feels lovely in the hand. The Genuine Leather has a great, grainy texture with a soft shine in deep black. The pages have a very attractive gold edge.

Another bonus for the Bible I bought was that it was indexed, with the Old Testament books indexed in black and the New Testament indexed in red.

Overall, this Bible is lovely - a real winner. Great Bible.......2005-08-28

This is a good version. It reads like a mix between NIV and NASB. It's very easy to understand. NASB is accurate but sometimes hard to read, and NIV changes too many words and simplifies too much. I always compare this version with my NASB, since I believe it to be most accurate.

Wonderful 'all-around' bible.......2004-12-31

There is plenty of commentary on this translation, so do your research! If you are used to the NIV, get ready because you may find some neat surprises in this translation. Gone are some familiar 'poetic' verses...replaced by more accurate text for your study. I have found the CSB a great addition to my King James and New Living Translations.

The binding is quite good for the price, and the pages lay fairly flat when reading. The bible is in fact, thin, so you will sacrifice some paper thickness; do not be alarmed, the quality of the paper is not an issue here. The reference text is a bit small for reading, and I find myself squinting often and pulling the bible closer to my eyes. The typeface for scripture however, is a pleasure to read resulting in absolutely no eye fatigue whatsoever. This is without exception, the best bible version I own. Exciting!

Christians who have longed for a more readable literal Bible translation will find much to praise in the English Standard Version. Great Bible if you need a small one........2007-10-06

I used this to read a verse at a wedding in France. I, of course, did not want to carry a large Bible from the USA to France. It was the perfect size. Although, a little small in print but I knew that going in. It worked perfectly and everyone was pleased. I then gave it to the bride and groom as part of their wedding present.

As for the translation, it's the best in accuracy and readability better than NIV and NASB. I bought this so that I can carry it around in my pocket. It's the perfect size to take it with you for a walk and devotion. The letters are quite small so it's not for long studies. A handsome little Bible for...highly recommend it.

Fantastic, concise Bible!.......2007-09-28

I purchased this ESV Bible because I wanted something small and portable, as well as a good, practical, readable translation. This print is excellent, the font is clear and not too small. The leather cover being soft gives the book an elasticity while not being too floppy. I have truly enjoyed my first few weeks of using this Bible and recommend it to everyone.

ESV Weathered Metal Bible.......2007-09-07

This is a handy bible to toss in my bag that I carry to work, the library, etc. Being in the Army National Guard, I appreciate the rugged, durable cover and the look of it. It's a decent translation, basically a conservative evangelical modernization of the revised standard version. I would recommend this bible to friends.

The Only Flaw is the Tiny Print.......2007-09-06

It's good to see the ESV gaining traction in the market. This is a beautifully bound compact Bible, with excellent reference notes and a remarkably complete concordance. Small enough to fit into a typical ladies purse, it's a convenient size to take on the train or bus. But the print is extremely small and takes some getting used to. It's a shame the publisher didn't make the Bible even slightly larger; I think it would have been a runaway best seller. As it stands, I can only give it 3 stars...the print is just too small.
