Two really good books in one. Very suspensful. I read everything
Tess Gerritsen writes, and they are all great.

5 out of 5 stars Call after midnight & Unfer the knife.......2007-01-18

These books were great! Some of her early work ,it still had all the right things to get you hooked from the beginning. I strongly recommend.

1 out of 5 stars REPRINT!!!!!!! NOT NEW STORIES!!!!.......2007-01-14

I am giving this book 1 star not because of the story content but because of the duplicity to the consumer!!! This is advertised as a new book by Gerritsen. Its NOT! These books were written in the late 80's. The publisher reprinted them, put 2 together and marketed it as a new book. That's DECEITFUL!!

Im sick and tired of publishers/authors who throw a new cover on an old book and trick the public into buying what they think is a new book. Thats why I refuse to pay for books. I request them at the library..for free!~

1 out of 5 stars Couldn't Finish.......2007-01-12

These books must have been early-Gerritsen. They were nothing like her latest stories which have gripping plots and interesting people. These two seemed rather childish by comparison and I didn't finish either of them.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Stories selection!!.......2006-08-20

I love this ladies books, and I know that this book is going to be a great read the same as many others I have by her. It came like "NEW" and I bought it used, but whoever had it, respects books, like I do.

Book Description

Handsome, charming, and a fixture on the New York City club scene, Dean Faiello had built a thriving beauty business. But money was never enough for Faiello, whose hard-partying ways constantly left him on the edge of ruin. So he did the unthinkable and worked as a cosmetic surgeon—even though he had no medical degree, or training whatsoever.

In the spring of 2003, a beautiful, successful woman named Maria Cruz went to “Doctor” Faiello for a relatively simple cosmetic procedure…and succumbed to a fatal complication while under his care. Faiello allegedly buried her corpse beneath a concrete slab at his Newark, New Jersey home—and went on the run. It was only after Cruz’s body was found that the true callousness of Faiello’s plan would be dissected…and he would be accused of putting her

5 out of 5 stars Great true crime read.......2007-09-12

This book was a shocker, something out of a horror movie. It amazes me that this person was able to fool so many people. Great read Diane.

4 out of 5 stars Unleash Fanning!.......2007-07-10

The tale of Dean Faiello, the fake doctor who let a woman die because of his incompetence is the story of a deeply self-enchanted man. As another reviewer here has noted, Faiello is a narcissist happy to blithely torched the lives of anyone if it makes his life easier. Whether taking the life savings of a former lover, all but stealing the legacy of another, or putting a patient who's OD'd on lidocane into a suitcase and burying her in his garage, Faiello is never troubled by a conscience or even simple human compassion. And like many such trainwrecks, he's a fascinating subject.

Fanning tells his story and that of his victims effectively. She's clearly on the verge of joining the first rank of True Crime writers along with Ann Rule, Tommy Thompson and others. It's disappointing and frankly frustrating to me that after Fanning's stellar effort on Written in Blood where she elevated an insta-book to a worthy addition to the True Crime canon she still doesn't have a hardcover deal. I'm delighted by St. Martin's commitment to the genre but let's face it, they aren't giving their writers the luxuries of time and resources to really explore their subjects. It's even more frustrating when Court TV anchor's Catherine Crier's far less insightful efforts are in hardcover. Crier's books aren't bad but they're certainly not better than Fanning's last two. I, for one, would love to see what Fanning could do given the time, support and the right story.

Back to the book - this is an absorbing, fast read. Well worth the time of any True Crime fan.

4 out of 5 stars Narcissistic Wannabe Doctor Kills Beautiful Young Woman.......2007-05-04

Fanning is showing remarkable talent in this latest book relating the story of Dean Faiello, an electrolysis technician turned practicing, non-licensed physician. As a result of only playing doctor, he takes the life of beautiful Filipino-born Maria Cruz when she seeks treatment from Faillo for a rare, yet not fatal, disorder of the tongue.

What is extremely interesting in reading about this particular case is the numerous acts of manipulations Faillo was able to complete successfully; and many of them on individuals that no one could ever suspect would be capable of falling for such foolishness.

As a general rule, narcissism rules among killers; however, I believe that Fiallo takes the cake of them all!

Book Description

Dr. Eskenazi, a nationally recognized expert on breast reconstruction after cancer, began her medical career believing that she would become a psychiatrist. Her interest in psychology combined with a lifelong study of art, mythology, and anthropology has given her an unusual window into the interior landscape of her patients. What she has found is that the desire for external transformation through surgery is connected to internal transformation, most particularly at key moments of transition in a woman's life. Although some eight million women a year have some sort of procedure done, cosmetic surgery is still identified with excessive vanity, narcissism, lack of authenticity, and psychological weakness with the path of least resistance being to deny having had it. By framing cosmetic surgery in a more deeply spiritual and psychological way, Eskenazi takes on this culture of shame and refutes the idea that cosmetic surgery and internal change are antithetical. Whether women decide to have cosmetic surgery or not, this book will provide them with a different vision and a context for understanding their decision.

5 out of 5 stars For anyone curious about the relationship between plastic surgery and society.......2007-08-28

When I had my plastic surgery, I knew I just wanted to look better. Therefore I was quite surprised by all the changes in my life that occurred after the surgery. This book answered many of my questions about my confusing and exciting experiences by putting plastic surgery in the larger context of personal transformation and ritual within a community. My hat is off to Dr. Eskenazi for framing the issue of plastic surgery as larger than the simple quest for beauty. Using her firsthand experience as a plastic surgeon, she eloquently makes the point--more is going on here, there is substance beneath the surface. As growing numbers of people go under the knife and afterwards try to make sense of their experience, books like this will be sorely needed.

5 out of 5 stars A radical re-visioning.......2007-08-22

More Than Skin Deep is a 'radical re-visioning' of a topic that conventionally represents a self-betrayal of women. Here is a bold and startlingly new idea: plastic surgery as a chosen rite of passage, in which the woman making the choice is willing to undergo an ordeal for the purposes of sself-transformation. It has taken me by surprise and made me question many of my own attitudes. Dr. Eskenazi's views are cogently argued, compassionately presented, and quite tender in their understanding of a woman's life."

Just as he skillfully deconstructed the Black Panthers in his groundbreaking The Shadow of the Panther, Hugh Pearson presents in Under the Knife a familial tale of a different kind of black power that evades our most ingrained social clichés. Pearson's uncle, Dr. Joseph Griffin, lived in segregated Georgia and moved up the socioeconomic ladder by secretly performing abortions and treating the sexually transmitted diseases of the white folks in his community. When they couldn't pay up, the good doctor extorted property deals from them! He also hired down-and-out blacks as butlers and chauffeurs and was a pillar in the Negro community (in a Robin Hood fashion). Pearson blends fact with rural fiction as he shows how African Americans in the era before the civil rights movement were sometimes able to outsmart the bigoted whites who, in a cosmic twist of fate, depended on them when the chips were down. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Book Description

Hugh Pearson grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, encouraged by his parents to believe that nothing was beyond his reach. If he needed any further inspiration, he could look to his great-uncle, Dr. Joseph Griffin. Although Griffin had stayed in the Deep South, he managed to become a pillar of his community at a time when Afro-Americans -- then called Negroes -- rarely prospered. He became the first Negro surgeon in south Georgia, donating millions of dollars to Afro-American institutions and building the largest private hospital for Afro-Americans in the State. Griffin inspired Louis Sullivan, who later became President Bush's Secretary of Health and Human Services, to go into medicine and a young Hosea Williams, who grew up to be one of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s most trusted aides, to aspire to be someone important. He served as a father figure to Donald Hollowell, the lawyer who became a mentor to Vernon Jordan and earned the nickname Georgia's "Mr. Civil Rights" for his legal battles on behalf of Martin Luther King, Jr., and other activists.

In Under the Knife, Pearson embarks on a personal journey to learn more about his great-uncle and the rest of the men in his family. What he has uncovered are cold truths about the moral complexities of success and power in a racist society. His uncle's fortune was largely built on performing backdoor abortions for women of all colors, on treating sexually transmitted diseases in Caucasian men too embarrassed to seek help from their regular doctors, and on coercing donations of property from many patients when they couldn't afford to pay their medical bills.

Pearson concludes that the same drive and willingness to bend the rules that helped men like John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan become wealthy and powerful in less enlightened eras were just as necessary in an ambitious Afro-American man like his great-uncle, who faced a far more difficult path. Pearson discusses his great-uncle's relationships with southern Jews who befriended him and uncovers the buried history of Afro-American physicians in the Jim Crow era. He dramatizes the struggles of other successful men in his family, charting his forefathers' rise from slavery to ownership of large Georgia farms and flourishing businesses in Jacksonville, Florida, and the accomplishments of his own father, who became the first person of any color in his rural Georgia county to earn a medical degree.

With Under the Knife, Hugh Pearson brings to life the pains and triumphs, as well as the ambiguities and fortitude, involved in the rise of middle-class and wealthy Afro-Americans, and restores the true legacy of an overlooked and oversimplified part of the American experience.

5 out of 5 stars Sensational piece of work.......2002-03-02

Its been a long time since I've read a book that truly captivated and held my attention like "Under the Knife".
Brother Pearson has done the community and humanity a service
with his very real portrayl of the the south and the way in which African-American physicians went through, around and over
discrimination. As an AA physician myself,I read and absorbed the words in this scholarly tome in a much different light than perhaps the average non-physician reader. It was enlightening,

refreshing and down to earth. And lastly, I appreciate Hugh's
avoidance of the usual thou does no wrong image that is often
cast upon our AA heroes. They are "great" men and women who deserve all the praise and glory due each and every one of them,
BUT they are human - and the admiration is even greater when we do not deprive them of this fact.Brother Hugh continue to write
great pieces for all of humanity. Yours in peace...

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing honesty!.......2000-07-13

Hugh Pearson wrote a painfully honest discussion of that which he uncovered as he took a personal journey to learn how his great-uncle, Dr. Joseph Griffin, 'a wealthy negro surgeon, wielded power in the Jim Crow south.' I both enjoyed and was disturbed by this excellent look back at a grim era in our collective past. Mr. Pearson shares with his readers the pride as well as the conflict he felt upon learning the extremes to which Dr. Griffin chose to resort to fulfill his dreams and aspirations.

Mr. Pearson's style of writing is refreshingly straightforward and in-your-face honest. I was particularly impressed with his impressions of the connection between the Jewish community and the Black community (long an interest of mine,) which haunted him throughout his journey.

In a convoluted way, the story was inspiring. Dr. Griffin went to many lengths and used any means possible to attain wealth, and subsequently power, in an age when power was unattainable to southern Blacks. As the real means of attaining power (education, real estate ownership, political involvement and money) are still out of the reach of many black Americans today, we must ask ourselves how--if at all--have things changed since the days of Dr. Griffin?

I strongly recommend this book to any student of history who would appreciate an accounting of the Jim Crow era, from its last remaining survivors.

2 out of 5 stars Mixed genre and not much good of either.......2007-03-19

I'm not quite sure why I keep reading Tess Gerritsen novels. Perhaps it's because they require so little of the reader. There's rampant violence for shock value and sappy romance with heaving bosoms and aching or throbbing whatevers.

This book, one of her earlier works, is a mismatch of murder mystery and lust between two beautiful, educated, articulate people. It just doesn't work for me, this mixture of the two genres. Never for a second did I believe in the so=called romance (aka lust) part, and the mystery was a bit over the top.

Gerritsen does know her way around hospital politics, about drugs, operating rooms, surgical instruments, etc. After all, she is a physician, so there is a certain realism in that area. But there still has to be a believable plot to go with that knowledge. The reader has to be "sold" on the plausability of the story line. And there have to be characters that don't make the reader say, "Oh, come on now" every few pages.

This book has been recently re-issued. Do not bother buying it as it is a poor read and you will have read the same plot before in other works. Her recent work is in a different league so do not expect this to be anything like as good.

3 out of 5 stars under the knife.......2001-03-08

I found this book not very exciting . Things just kept happening with not many of them resolved.

5 out of 5 stars Good murder mystery.......2000-11-22

I read this book a long time ago in a 3 in l book. I had forgotten when I bought this book. Even though, I remembered the ending, I was still completely entertained. This is a story of a doctor who gets accused of being careless and letting her patient die. As things start to unravel, you know she is innocent and the lawyer who was bound to see her in court realizes that there is a lot more to the story. Together they go out in a search of the truth. Excellent twists and turns that keep you guessing up until the end.

4 out of 5 stars We all need to know what the patient goes through.......2003-09-22

The author, a general surgeon, takes us on his journey through coronary bypass surgery, from the realization that there was really something wrong to his reflections on the process once he was through it. Through his eyes we see typical denial of symptoms that he knows well, a lesson for anyone avoiding the doctor. He takes us throught he search for the right place for surgery; revealing that he, like many people, makes his final decision as much on an emotional basis as on a medical one. We see his frustration with the thousand insults that patients must deal with, such as being awakened on the night before surgery for antibiotic injections that are painful enough to keep him awake on a night he thinks he should get as much rest as possible.

For medical professionals, the book is a humbling look at things we could do better to care for our patients. For patients, though a little dated, it provides a guide as to what they can expect.

Working in the medical field, I was especially enthralled with what a brilliant, diabolical story this was. The characters were sympathetic and warm, and the story didn't slow down for a minute. I've always enjoyed Frances Roe's books, but this was his best yet. If you like medical thrillers, or just thrillers in general, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars chilling in its' realism.......1998-03-31

Dr. Fred Newsome is the head of a group practice in New Coventry, Connecticut. The group is debating whether to work with big insurance companies that would make everyone of them extremely wealthy. Fred opposes this idea while his friend and partner Dermott Spencer fully supports the concept. Fred is flying his plane to see a crony, who went through a similar experience. However, his plane crashes, leaving him dead.

A couple of years later, Dermott is in charge of the group, which is now affiliated with Lovejoy Hospital, a place whose vision is to have the world's most cost efficent health program without regard to the medical need or care required. Mike Richmond, an ethical resident, wants to join Spencer's group. He wins the approval of Dermott when he covers the man's bungling during surgery. Mike is quickly accepted into the practice, but soon realizes that he has joined a malignant entity capable of doing any evil necessary to survive. When Mike begins to ask questions, he finds that if he fails to shut up immediately he will lose more than what he recently gained. He could lose his life.

Frances Roe, known for her exciting thrillers, delivers a frightening glimpse into what is a very possible future state of health care. The chilling aspects of UNDER THE KNIFE lies in the basis of reality that money is the only determinant in health care decisions. Ms. Roe shows the ethical dilemmas confronting doctors by using her protagonist as a symbol of a practitioner trying to stay on the right road. Readers of medical thrillers and conspiracy theorists will want to read this medical equivalent to THE FIRM.

John Christ was a plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas. He had a history of a violent temper and spousal abuse when he entered his third marriage. His new wife, Carol, was a divorced nurse with two children. This was her sixth marriage. From the early months of their marriage, he tried to make her over, performing multiple cosmetic surgeries on her and even piercing her most private parts in front of several of his colleagues. Their relationship became stormier over time until they were fighting constantly.

On May 9, 1992, Dr. Christ shot Carol with a .45 caliber pistol. The bullet entered her face just in front of her ear. It traveled through her sinuses and nasal cavity, ruptured her left eye, and exited her left cheek just below the cheekbone. She received multiple fractures from the bullet throughout much of her face. The temporal and inferior frontal lobes of the brain were bruised, leaving permanent damage.

When Christ tried to fire a second shot, her managed to get his forefinger and missed Carol completely. He went to the kitchen, threw the clip in the garbage, and began making telephone calls. He reported to 911 that they had shot each other. Then he called his ex-wife to say he could not pick up their daughter.

A series of trials followed that are unbelievable. The jury deadlocked in the first trial. It was ruled a mistrial and another trial started. That time he was convicted of attempted manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years. The jury expressed regret that they could not give him more time. Twenty years was the maximum penalty allowed.

At the time of the writing, Carol had undergone 20 surgeries. She will need frequent surgeries for the remainder of her life due to bone reabsorption, tissue atrophy, and prosthetics wearing out. She was unable to perform her duties as a nurse and is receiving disability compensation.

This is a good book containing 445 pages. I recommend it, but prepare to be absolutely enraged when you begin reading it.
