Book Description

Eat, Drink, and Weigh Less offers a medically sound, extremely effective program that shows people how they can lose weight by adding delicious food to their diet and making simple changes in what they eat throughout the day. Its flexible and adaptableand it really works. It features a powerful way to chart your progress called the Body Score. The more you raise your Body Score, the more you will lower your weight! A quiz at the beginning of the book helps readers determine their Body Score; the chapters that follow explain easy dietary and behavioral steps readers can take to improve their scores. While the concept is simple, the science behind it is not. It represents years of top research conducted by Dr. Walter C. Willett, the head of Harvard School of Public Healths Department of Nutrition, including the famous Nurses Health Study. This study scored each of its over 84,000 participants on food choices, exercise schedule, and body massresulting in a number that accurately determined the nurses risk of heart disease. Now, for the first time, Dr. Willett has teamed up with mega-bestselling cookbook author Mollie Katzen to adapt a similar, much easier scoring system to create a user-friendly diet plan with fail-safe results. If you can raise your score, you will lower your weightall while eating delicious, easy-to-prepare foods.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent information, easy to use.......2007-08-27

I am a psychologist and a work with people with eating disorders, and I use this book as a reference for my clients all the time. The information is clear, straight-forward, and the "system" they have created for losing weight includes not only food choices, but how you eat, when you eat, and the importance of exercise. About half of this book is dedicated to food recipies and very practical information like what to look for on labels at the grocery store. There is nothing "extreme" or dogmatic about this program - it is about being healthy and how to make good choices. There is a two page questionaire that you fill out every day to see how many "points" you get - the more points, the better towards your goal of losing weight - this is nice, because it forces you to look at your behavior every day and set specific goals towards change. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding reference book........2007-08-23

This book and its' predecessor are all anyone needs to find his way to a healthy lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars A healthy combination .......2007-07-18

Walter Willet is the head of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard and author of 'Eat, Drink , and Be Healthy'. He opens the book with a personal preface explaining his family connection with good food, and farming. He then tells about his professional career and his participation in Dr. Frank Speizer's 'Nurses Health Study' enabled him to better understand the principles of proper nutrition.
His collaborator Molly Katzen author of the 'Moosewood Cook Book' is a specialist in preparing and providing healthy vegetable rich meals. Her job in the book is to provide the recipes which will be in tune with the principles Dr. Willett elaborates.
These principles they label nine turning points. 1) Eat Lots of Vegetables and Fruits 2) Say Yes to Good Fats 3) Upgrade your carbohydrates 4) Choose healthy proteins 5)Stay hydrated 6) Drink Alcohol in moderation (optional) 7)Take a multavitamin every day 8)Move more 9) Eat mindfully all day long.
They also provide a method for assessing your 'body-score' of keeping tabs on how you are doing, and improving it. They also provide three different food regimens, each for a different purpose. A warm-up plan to get people going into proper eating, a twenty- one day more rapid weight- loss diet, and a long- term maintenance plan.
Part three of the book contains the recipes, and Part Four is what they call a Tool Kit, a shopping guide, and a guide on how to eat well through life's ups and downs.
It is hard for me to believe that most readers would know all the information and insight provided in this book. i.e. I think there must be something valuable for all ' conscious eaters' even if the very knowledgeable.
I am not a big maven on this subject but I have taken an interest in it for years. Nonetheless I learned many things from this book. Why of all vegetables one of my great favorites 'potatoes' is not recommended for a diet. Why the whole wheat grains and rices are truly preferable to the white- stuff as they slow down digestion and absorption. Why cooked tomatoes are a valuable ingredient in the diet. Why the best diet is not a fat- free but rather one which makes use of the 'healthy kind of fat'. Why tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring providing Omega -3 are so important for our health. Why and how conscious eating can make for a truly improved feeling about oneself and one's life.
This is a very good book and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Creative yet simple plan for vegetarians and carnivores.......2007-06-01

I thought I knew all I needed to know about nutrition--omega-3s and brocolli are good, cheeseburgers are bad--but my frame of reference has shifted as a result of this book. The USDA-sponsored food pyramid, for instance, is helpfully critiqued. Also, this book accommodates vegetarians, flexitarians, and omnivores alike. Most of all, I appreciate the emphasis on taking good care of oneself and enjoying food--very unusual for a "diet book." I am grateful for Dr. Willet's and Mollie Katzen's efforts to address poor nutrition and obesity in the land of plenty.

4 out of 5 stars Great background material, recipes not so much.......2007-05-15

This book is great for outlining a better, healthier way to live. The breakdown is easy to follow, explanations are clear (are make sense) and the shopping guidelines are great. As with Katzen's other cookbooks, the recipies are still a little too out there for my family (i.e. my meat-eater and 8 year old son). I have made a few of the recipes and I've used the others as a template for my own meals. I would still recommend this book to anyone who wants a model to follow for how to create a healthy, lasting relationship with food.

All belly bulge is not created equal! Women gain abdominal fat for five very different reasons. This book contains alot of great information on nutrition and health! Denise really delivers once again!

5 out of 5 stars Tone Your Tummy Type.......2007-07-20

I've scanned through the book. It looks thorough and what I'm after. Denise Austin does her homework and puts out a book worth the price.

2 out of 5 stars not her best.......2007-05-07

I bought this hoping for some new innovative ideas on my problem area....my tummy. I felt the book was 'just like any other diet book'. She more or less told me things I've already heard in other books.

4 out of 5 stars Tone Your Tummy -- Choose Life.......2007-04-12

Beyond concerns about appearance: excess abdominal fat is a serious risk factor for a whole host of health problems leading to premature death and disability. The author covers this as a motivating concern nicely, "It's one thing to lose weight to fit into your favorite pair of jeans. It's quite another to do so to save your life!" (p. 21) Particularly as a health educator, that is a life-saving message I want to get out there too.

Toning my tummy to improve my appearance and my overall health is a work in progress; I am very encouraged with the results thus far. Our bodies truly are resilient and marvelous. I am combining aerobic workouts with selected abdominal exercises and other toning, especially my back (nape of neck to small of my back) for grace of movement and other target areas, as well as light weight training for overall strength.

In order to determine your tummy type by this book you will need to have access to some basic medical data about yourself, such as HDL cholesterol level, triglyceride level, and so forth. Do take the time to follow the "hollowing" technique (pp. 108-111) if you are new to abdominal exercises.

The only investment in equipment I had to make was in an exercise ball (less than $10 at a local discount store) which has proven to be not only a great exercise aid (I am persuaded that abdominal crunches ARE more effective on the ball, as research has indicated) but has also proven to be a great social magnet in my room, as my children and grandchildren love to use it while hanging out with me. All this has contributed to a sort of fitness revival in our home. My oldest and next-to-youngest (so far!) sons have offered to be my personal trainers, each being qualified to do so. So, we are having fun doing all this our own way.

I am not following the meal plans in this book because -- particularly being a health educator and having a board-certified nutritionist for a sister -- I just have not seen the need to do so. Do remember that the author is so fastidious about her diet that, by her own admission, when she eats a hard-boiled egg, she (sometimes) gives half of the yolk to her dog. That degree of conscientiousness may or may not fit with your own goals and lifestyle.

Whether you choose to follow this book as a total lockstep program or simply dip into it as one of a number of resources you are combining in your own program, I believe you will find value in it. Whether you do so through this program or another, do tone your tummy, not just for your appearance, but for your life. Choose life.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2007-03-31

I am always looking for different ways to "tone and flatten" my belly. I liked the different and new exercises that are listed. I think the menu looked good, but required more ingredients/time then what I have-working mother of two. It'd be hard to swing the lunch menu. The different size shapes were helpful and she always motivates me. I'd buy it again - and also her "Boot Camp" video is awesome!! It's the best video I've ever purchased, just be ready for a great workout in only 20 minutes!

Product Description

Blood pressure drugs guarantee you will get worse, for they actually deplete the nutrients that cause high blood pressure, making sure you will need even more medications. They also shrink the brain and raise your risk of heart attack, senility and blindness. High blood pressure is not a deficiency of blood pressure-lowering drugs. But there are dozens of ways you can permanently cure your high blood pressure without drugs. And since healthy blood vessels determine the longevity of every organ in the entire body, you need this book even if you dont have high blood pressure, for vascular health is key to total body health and longevity. First of all every single cell of your body depends on the health of your blood vessels that supply them. If you dont want to get Alzheimers, then you need a healthy brain, but it is only as healthy as its blood supply. Likewise, if you dont want cancer (or you are trying to heal it), it starts (and spreads) in areas of poor circulation. The High Blood Pressure Hoax will show you that for every ailment even one as simple as high blood pressure, there are multiple causes and multiple cures. You have a lot to choose from. In fact, I would suggest you read the entire book before you chose your program. For by understanding how the various causes work, you (who know your body and medical history better than anyone else) have the optimum opportunity for choosing the best solution for you. This is the ultimate plan for vascular health, but it doesnt stop there. It also continues on from where Detoxify or Die left off and takes you to more powerful levels of detoxification. I cant wait to empower you! So lets get started.

5 out of 5 stars The High Blood Pressure Hoax.......2007-02-25

The High Blood Pressure Hoax is an excellent informative book that will enlighten the layperson about blood pressure and how to prevent hypertension. Dr Rogers explains everything in laymans terms and gives you an easy plan to follow. After all high blood pressure and many ailments aren't a lack of drugs but a lack of nutrients!!

2 out of 5 stars Not for the Average Guy.......2007-01-06

My doc suggested I read this to better understand nutrition and its impact on health. He beleves that doctors are more inclined to treat symptoms rather than underlying causes and that this shortcoming in medical education and practive is changing quickly. But not quickly enough. If you have an MD degree, you could breeze thru this book. But for the average guy its like trying to read something written by an alien. Even if you glean a good idea, you'll have a lot of trouble putting it into practice as the foods and supplements suggested are difficult to locate.

1 out of 5 stars This is the book for you if you believe in hate-language.......2007-10-05

As soon as I got this book I was excited to open it and begin reading. Only, what I saw was pages full of hate language and the kind of divisive rhetoric that I find all too disappointing in today's Christian world. It's too bad that Christian women like this author find it necessary to demonize so many people-- I don't believe this is what Jesus would do. Family planning called abortion, homosexuals as evil beings, Jesus as a cure for medically proven depression.... c'mon. I burned this book and am ashamed that this author got a penny of my money.

5 out of 5 stars Book Study.......2007-03-13

Myself and another woman from church have been doing this study with some high school girls. It's fantastic, it is applicable to most every woman. We usually edit the stuff mentioned applying to married women, but as a married woman I thoroughly enjoy reading it myself. This is a great study that will almost certainly tread on lies most women believe at some time or another.

Fitness guru Denise Austin helps you "zero in on your personal trouble spots" while increasing metabolism with this 6-week exercise and eating program. Her formula includes toning workouts that target the waist, thighs, abs, buttocks, hip, lower back, and upper arms; regular walking and stretching; and eating strategies (not dieting). Her tips are refreshingly sensible: Avoid chronic dieting (it hurts your health and makes you fatter), stretch to decrease stress, fill up on high-fiber foods, eat a balanced diet, build muscle to increase calorie-burning, and walk almost every day. Austin's clearly illustrated and varied exercises use body weight, dumbbells, resistance bands, or a stability ball. A sample exercise schedule takes 15 to 60 minutes a day. For especially busy days, she offers a series of exercises that work two or more muscle groups at once. Austin's "Shrink-Fat Eating Plan" emphasizes portion control, 1,400 to 1,800 calories, and a nutritional breakdown of 24 percent "good" fat, 20 percent protein, and 56 percent high-quality carbs. Whether you just want a foundation to get started or you need a structured, daily program (including menu plans, shopping lists, and daily logs), you can find it here. Profiles of happy and successful followers of the program add interest. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

Any beginner will be able to pick this book up and make immediate improvements in their fitness and health.

All areas are adressed and I'm happy to see a decent flexibility program covered as well.

I found this book to be helpful in my understanding of the female body.Given that I work with many female executives,I found this information to be very useful in designing my clients' workouts-especially the female body composition.
I liked the fact that the book showed me ways of getting the most out of the block of time I have for my clients. Most of them come in over lunch hour to train, the gyms are packed and there is no time to think and search. This book give me insights on how to save and maximize on the time that I have, and my clients really appreciate it.

If you want a book to give you lessons on what exercises are the best for you and a few meals to use this book may be for you. I found that you can get the same exercises listed in most videos and dvd's that denise austin has previously released. Also, the meals she gives you might work if you were just going to make 2-servings, they don't always work as well when increased for a family.

1 out of 5 stars Only good for an absolute beginner.......2006-02-05

If you know ANYTHING about eating properly already, don't purchase this book. This book is meant for beginners only. Denise must have been paid by the companies that produce the foods she suggests, because if you don't have access to the specific foods and types she recommends, there are no alternatives. The workout is also completely basic and rudimentary and focussed towards those that have NEVER worked out before, or possibly the elderly. I had high hopes for this book but was completely let down and actually returned it.

5 out of 5 stars I was skeptical, but it really works!.......2005-11-23

I'm the first to admit that dieting makes me grouchy. Additionally, I am not a morning person, so the idea of getting up early and power-walking for 30 minutes four times a week seemed like Chinese water torture. But I had a formal dress to get into, and I needed drastic measures. So I read the book, and gradually incorporated the elements of the plan into my daily routine. I started with the meal plans. It was an eye-opener to see what a true portion should be, and I could see in my food journal all the things I was putting in my mouth every day. Next week, I started the walking. After a week I really started to enjoy it! I have two kids under 6, and I found I relished the quiet time to myself out on the roads in the morning. After that, I started the weight workouts. I saw results in the first month of following all of the advice. The motivational stuff seemed too perky in the beginning, but around week 6, when I started to get major chocolate cravings, I just kept thinking about what she said about halfway through the book. "Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels." Thirteen weeks later, I am 19 pounds thinner, and the formal I was trying to get into was a little loose! Everyone compliments me on how great I look. If you are really serious about getting into shape and fitting into your clothes, this is the book (and plan) for you.

and had graffiti written about her in the girls’ bathroom (who knows what was in the boys’!?!).

But don’t worry—Ruby lives to tell the tale. And make more lists.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Get More Real Than This.......2007-07-06

Ruby is having panic attacks. Her boyfriend has broken up with her, none of her friends are speaking with her, her ride to school won't take her anymore, and her parents are sure she is feeling suicidal or anorexic. Welcome to the story of The Boyfriend List by E. Lockhart, a masterful look inside the life of a teenage girl. This girl is every girl. Reading this book was like looking back at parts of my past, and it was amazing and painful to take the journey with her.

Lockhart writes truthfully on the way a girl thinks about boys. Ruby reveals pieces of her life one bit at a time. Her therapist asks her to create a boyfriend list: a list of every guy she has liked, dated, thought about dating, kissed, or had a special relationship with. Ruby isn't sure how this is going to help her solve her immediate problem: getting her boyfriend back and getting life back to normal. But as she examines each boy on the list, Ruby may discover she's not the victim she thinks she is.

Lockhart is spot on. Ruby is like a poster child for the things women do to screw up their lives. We fall for a guy, and when he doesn't end up being prince charming, what do we do? We beg, plead, cajole, manipulate, and lower ourselves--do anything but the thing we should do, pack our bags and move on. I wanted to be hard on her, but she is so dang sympathetic it's impossible.

I think this book has it all: teenage angst, unhealed wounds, a journey of self-discovery, a lot of pain, and also hope for the future. Also, I think most girls would admit they could relate to at least one of the stories in this book.

Here are things I have done that Ruby did:

Wait by the phone for a guy to call
Allow myself to be a victim of heartbreak
Flirt with one of my friend's boyfriends
Not be honest with myself about my motives
Kiss a guy to make myself feel better
Feel tremendous pain at betrayal
Not take action to change my future
I have to hand it to Ruby, though, she does make progress eventually, as everyone must if they want to heal. As I was reading this book, I was thinking it was similar to the book/movie High Fidelity. In that story, the male protagonist tries to discover the answer to the age-old question "Why does this always happen to me?" by looking back on his 5 most painful break-ups. Like Ruby, he even asks some of the women directly, "Why did you break up with me?" In each case, Rob discovers it wasn't just because he was unlovable or ugly, but rather a case of the wrong time or a misunderstanding or some such thing.

E. Lockhart has a great future as a writer, and I recommend this book highly to any teenage girl from age 14 and up.

5 out of 5 stars ~*~Great, Funny, Can't Put Down Read!!!!!~*~.......2007-05-09

The Boyfriend List is a wonderful book that is the outcome of Ruby Olver's assignment for her therapist. You can just imagine how funny it is. You will fall in love with the character Ruby as soon as you start reading. You see a little bit of yourself in her, whether it's her glasses, her quirky behavior, or her love for...of course..BOYS! It's a great book that any teenage girl can relate to. You will literally LAUGH OUT LOUD when reading this book... so make sure your not reading it in front of a crowd of people or else they will think your weird as you laugh outloud by yourself....(I have experienced this when I read what Hutch said to Nora about her outfit..LOL)! ANYWAYS....it's a terriffic book and you should definitely read it! O yes and a shout out to the author: GREAT JOB!!!! =)

4 out of 5 stars The Boyfriend List .......2007-04-04

The Boyfriend List is a great bookfor teenagers. It is a romance novel that leaves you reading more. When you first pick up this book and start reading you will find yourself wantingmore and more just to find out what happens next. I recommend this book to teenage s who like romance comedys. Ruby is the main character. She is like every normal teenage ;she loves boys, has to struggle through high school, and figure out who her friends are. Ruby had a boyfriend (Jackson Clarke) but he broke up with her to be with her best friend, Kim. So when Kim goes on vacation Ruby makes sure she talks to Jackson. After an ordeal with Jackson, Ruby starts to have panic attacks. Her over protective rush her to a physiatrist to try and find out what is going on in their daughter's life. She then meets doctor Z. who becomes Ruby's faithful physiatrist. Doctor Z. makes her write the boyfriend list to try and get to the bottom of Ruby's panic attacks. The boyfriend list is a list of all the guys Ruby has ever liked or they liked her. Fifteen guys made up the list, some of them she would rather not talk about. A few of the guys who managed to make up the list were Billy Krespin, Ben Moi, and Finn Murphy. Tommy Hazard is the guy that every wants to know. He is kind, sweet, and cute. This is an awesome book and when you read it you will never be bored with it. I loved every page of this book! I recommend that teen s read this book. Don't forget to read the sequel- The Boy Book: A Study of Habbits and Behaviors, Plus Techniques for Taming Them.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining story, with dead-on details about high school life.......2007-03-21

The Boyfriend List is the story of several months in the life of high school sophomore Ruby Oliver. They are angst-filled months, featuring a harsh dumping of Ruby by her first-ever boyfriend, and subsequent social mis-steps on her part that caused her to:

1. Lose her close friends;
2. Become a social leper;
3. Be widely considered a slut in her small pond of a Seattle prep school; and
4. Start having panic attacks

The panic attacks result in Ruby (aka "Roo") being sent to see a shrink, Dr. Z. The story is told in bits and pieces, moving backwards and forwards in time, as Ruby examines what happened, and why. The Boyfriend List of the title (also used for chapter titles), refers to a list that Dr. Z. asks Roo to prepare of all of the boys that she's ever had any kind of romantic interaction with (dates, crushes, gifts left in lockers, etc.). Of course the mere existence of the list leads to problems, too, but you'll have to read the book for the details.

The audio version works quite well for this story. The text was apparently edited slightly, because Ruby occasionally will refer to "this story that you're listening to", instead of what I presume is "this story that you're reading" in the printed version. It feels like a long phone conversation with a new best friend, in which she tells a story filled with classic high-school drama. The narrator (Mandy Siegfried) sounds youthful, without being annoyingly girlish.

Ruby is a fully 3-dimensional character. She loves her slightly eccentric parents. She is, without much comment, a vegetarian. She buys clothes from vintage shops. She's insecure, and she makes foolish mistakes. She moons around after boys, on the slightest provocation, but is happiest hanging out with her girlfriends. She talks too much when she's nervous. She likes narrow-ruled notebooks. She feels real.

And the story feels real, too. I was humiliated for Ruby at her low points, and wondered how she could face school in the morning. But I also nodded my head, and laughed with her at some of her insights. There's a description in which she likens kissing a boy she doesn't find attractive (as part of a spin-the-bottle/7-minutes-in-heaven game) to going to the dentist. It's hilarious. There are many references to body parts and sex, though nothing too advanced actually happens with Ruby. She's refreshingly open and curious, with an entertaining voice.

Of all the books I've read, this one most made me reminisce about my own junior high and high school experiences. It's not that my experiences were the same as Ruby's, but E. Lockhart has so exactly captured what it's like to be a girl of that age--uncertain about what boys are thinking, having disagreements with friends over trust, and thinking about relative levels of popularity. The details are dead on.

One other nice thing about the book is that talking with Dr. Z. does help Roo to identify some negative behavior patterns in herself, and to start taking tiny steps towards resolution. There's no big drama over this--just small, incremental insights and improvements. The book touches on issues related to self-esteem, body image, forgiveness, and treating friends with respect, but it touches on them very lightly.

In summary, The Boyfriend List is an entertaining read, with strong characterization (at least of Ruby, the others are necessarily more remote to the reader). I think that many teen girls will find Ruby's experiences believable and, perhaps, reassuring (if Ruby could survive her humiliations, surely readers can endure the emotional traumas that high school dishes out on a regular basis). I think that adult readers who were once teenage girls will enjoy it, too, as a bit of a trip down memory lane (though with modern details). I highly recommend The Boyfriend List, and I can't wait to get my hands on the sequel, The Boy Book.

A slightly longer version of this book review was originally published on my blog, Jen Robinson's Book Page, on March 20, 2007.

5 out of 5 stars great teen voice.......2007-02-09

Ruby Oliver has to start seeing a shrink at age 15 after the worst 10 days of her life. She did something "suspicious" with a boy, lost all her friends, and all her semi-friends, became a social outcast, and had a panic attack. After the panic attack, Ruby's mom starts making her go see Dr. Z. Dr. Z in turn forces Ruby to make a list of all her boyfriends, almost-boyfriends, could-have-been-boyfriends, and wanted-to-be-boyfriends. At first the therapy sessions are cathartic and Ruby is working out her problems, even if the other kids at school are still avoiding her. Then her "Boyfriend List" gets discovered, and suddenly people think she's an über-slut, even though some of the boys are from second grade. Will Ruby ever gain back her reputation, and her friends? Ruby's voice is incredibly real, and the pain she goes through is easily identifiable as realistic high school drama. And the footnotes sprinkled throughout help, as well.

Boston PI Sunny Randall is the daughter Robert Parker's series hero Spenser and his inamorata, Susan Silverman, might have had if they weren't so busy parenting Pearl the Wonder Dog. Like Spenser, Sunny is smart, tough, and fearless; like Susan, she's sexy, droll, and vulnerable; and like Pearl, Sunny's pit bull, Rosie, is the only character who's wise enough to hide when trouble comes knocking at the door. In Shrink Rap, Sunny's working as a bodyguard for a famous romance writer who's being stalked by her ex-husband, a psychiatrist engaged in extremely unprofessional conduct with his female patients. To get the goods on Dr. John Melvin, Sunny goes undercover as a vulnerable divorcée, which isn't that far from the truth; simultaneously, she's also seeing another therapist, who's supposed to be coaching her for her undercover role but is also helping her understand her troubled relationships with men. It's a clever device, and Parker makes the most of it in this spare, smart, swiftly paced mystery, one of Parker's best in recent years. --Jane Adams

Download Description

"Boston P.I. Sunny Randall goes on the road to protect a bestselling author--and uncovers a world of dark secrets--in the new novel by the Grand Master. Melanie Joan Hall is a bestselling author in a bind. Her publisher needs her to tour on behalf of her newest blockbuster, and Melanie Joan needs a bodyguard-cum-escort to protect her from an overbearing ex-husband whose presence unnerves her to the point of hysteria. Sunny's cool demeanor, cop background, and P.I. smarts are an instant balm for the older woman. She begins to sense that Melanie Joan's ex-a psychotherapist-is not your basic stalker, and when an incident at a book signing leaves the ex bloodied and the author unconscious, it's clear the stakes are high. Deciding that the only way to crack the case is from the inside, Sunny enters therapy herself, only to discover some disturbing truths about herself . . . while putting her life on the line. Gripping, nuanced, and filled with Parker's signature dialogue and psychological insight, Shrink Rap is a winner."

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all.......2007-06-12

I'm a first time reader of Robert Parker. Maybe it was just what I needed at the time which was a light and breezy, very predictable little novel that I was able to jump right into within 3 pages. Over a span of less than 24 hours, I was able to pick it up, put it down, a few pages here, a few pages there and then it was over, a neatly wrapped package of a pleasant diversion, not one I'm going to remember for sure but entertaining nevertheless.

However, as I read other people's reviews, it appears that some of you Parker readers kind of feel cheated. I might venture to read a few more of his books since I feel there's no where to go but "up" with this author and I appear to have caught a "dog" according to most.

The one thing I must mention is that our villain is introduced as a "stalker" but it doesn't appear that he would have any time to stalk Melanie Joan (the author Sunny is hired to protect). Our villain also employs other sexually deviant behavior that just doesn't fit it with his portrait of a stalker. Another words be a stalker or be the other deviant. To call this is a mystery or any type of thriller is a joke. Just take it for what it is, a pleasant diversion.

5 out of 5 stars Female P.I.s.......2007-05-22

Sunny Randall once again, despite her own problems, saves the day. Her clever rescue of several women from a sadistic psychiatrist takes a lot of courageous well as help from her ex-husband.

As usual, a fast reading book, as are all of Rober Parker's books.Shrink Rap (Sunny Randall)

3 out of 5 stars Best Sunny Randall so far.......2007-02-13

This is the 3rd book in the Sunny Randall series, and in my opinion, the best to date. I liked the first one (Family Honor), wasn't real keen on the second installment (Perish Twice), but Parker is giving us more insight into his protagonist of Sunny Randall in each book.

I'm still not real big on Parker's writing style where dialog with Sunny, friend Spike, Sunny's various clients, and her ex-husband Richie is mostly monosyllabic, but I'm getting used to it. The other thing I noticed in this book for the first time is that Parker's dialog eschews anything other than "said." You'll never see "asked," "mused," exclaimed," "bellowed," or any other verb to describe his characters' utterances. It's an interesting style...not necessarily objectionable, just unique. While I suppose things like poetry (haikus in particular) would be considered minimalist writing, Parker has a style I can only categorize as minimalist prose. As I said above, he doesn't make any attempt to use verbs other than "said" in his dialog. The characters themselves never ramble or philosophize or muse except in these brief little sputs of one or two sentences. It reminds me of those Crime Noir pulp fiction novels...

"The dame entered my office. I got up. She was showing plenty of leg. We embraced. I said, 'Find the place OK?' She said, 'Yeah.' I locked the door."

The writing is sort of in that style, and while admittedly not quite so terse, you won't find much in the way of adjectives. Let's put it this way: If Jack Webb (aka: Sgt. Joe Friday of Dragnet fame) wrote a book, it would sound like Parker's style. Terse. Mostly humorless. Just the facts, maam.

The plot here centers around Melanie Joan Hall, a bestselling author of romance novels who hires Sunny to act as a bodyguard, protecting Melanie Joan from an obsessive ex-husband who is stalking her. It slowly becomes clear that Melanie's ex-husband, a successful psychiatrist, is doing more than just stalking, he is seducing and killing his clients with Sunny and Melanie next on his list of would-be victims.

In this book, we get a little more insight into Sunny and why she seems to be such a "c'mere c'mere get away get away" personality when it comes to men in general and her ex-husband in particular. Sunny is a complex character, tough, independent, and often frustrating, but in this book she learns to ask for help when she realizes she's in over her head. It's refreshing to see Sunny soften up a little bit and stop being such a loner.

As usual, she's joined by her pal Spike and her ever-present dog, Rosie, whom is more like a child than a pet to both Sunny and Richie.

A fun read. Even more fun when you read the previous two Sunny Randall novels. I'll probably pick up some of Parker's other novels from his Spencer series to compare.

Finally, I can't help but notice that photos of Parker on several books show him walking a bull terrier. I think his own love of these dogs has spilled over into Sunny Randall's persona. I wonder if Parker's dog is named Rosie, just like Sunny's?

3 out of 5 stars Quick but Intense Read.......2006-10-02

Romance novelist Melanie Joan Hall hires Sunny Randall to protect her from her stalker ex-husband. Melanie met John Melvin, a psychiatrist, when she started going to him for counseling and he seduced her. As she investigates Melvin, Sunny realizes that Melanie is not the only patient he has seduced. When two of his patients die, Sunny realizes that Melvin needs to be stopped before someone else gets hurt. To catch him, Sunny becomes his patient, but in trying to stop Melvin, Sunny places herself in great danger, danger she may not escape from.

"Shrink Rap" is a quick, but at times tense read. Sunny Randall is a more complex character than Robert Parker's Spenser is, struggling with her feelings for her ex-husband. Melanie Joan is also a complex character - a successful writer, beloved by her fans, but haunted by her ex-husband. John Melvin is pure evil, without any redeeming characteristics. As always, the dialogue and the use of Boston itself as a character in the novel drive the story. While much of the novel is intense, especially in the scenes where Melvin stalks Melanie Joan, the ending is especially intense as Sunny takes an incredible risk in trying to catch Melvin.

Nicely done.

1 out of 5 stars Just don't expect a detective story.......2005-09-23

Basically, "Shrink Rap" is Chick Lit. Told in the first person by Sunny Randall, a private investigator whom everyone she encounters feels called upon to describe as "slim and cute," the plot is minimal and the extraneous detail maximal. Parker dwells indulgently on minutiae of clothing, food, Boston area geography and the minute-by-minute actions of Sunny's surrogate child, a miniature bull terrier. We also hear a great deal about Sunny's unsatisfactory love life. After 3 1/2 cassettes (out of 5, total) of ladies' magazine trivia, action heats up a bit, but even after the bad guy is caught in the despicable act we never do learn why those two poor, benighted women had to end up dead.

If you know and like Robert Parker, you'll probably enjoy this recording (except for the mind-numbing repetition of "he said," "she said" and "I said" in every conversational interchange). If you're not a Robert Parker fan, this won't turn you into one.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Innovative!.......2006-06-02

Tom Peters does not only preach innovation, he lives it. This book is a prime example... its unique style and content make it a fast read, but the ideas presented stimulate many fresh thoughts that keep you thinking long after you finished reading the book.

Definitely worth reading...

4 out of 5 stars Provokes you into thinking differently.......2005-10-06

From the first page of the book 'till the last, you'll realize that Tom Peters (In Search of Excellence) is making you think differently. Pages are printed sideways, then normally, with extremely large type, then small type. Interspersed are ideas and facts that are thought provoking and sometimes, eye-opening. That's the point. Most of the ideas are applicable to building any type of successful business.

5 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyable.......2005-09-11

WARNING! This book is not for the die hard, stuffy, stereotypical management theorist. It is a innovative and easy to read look into the world of management "Tom Peters" style. What has now become a trade-mark writing style Peters uses a very personal style to get across some sensational ideas.

Even though it was written pre-dotcom bust AND it is almost 6 years old, a lot of the ideas are still very relevant.

Short, punchy and still very enlightening!

5 out of 5 stars WOW is right!!!.......2005-06-27

This outstanding book will either inspire you to try and fix your broken company management, or make you mad at the state of affairs at your company (or both). It is filled with examples of how things should be done, and most are applicable to any work environment. Everybody loves the Ritz-Carlton empowered maids story.

5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurs --wake up & THINK.......2005-04-08

Peters is definitely one of my favorite authors. His insights on innovation offer me constant inspiration as I write my own newsletter - titled Byvation, which means ... By Way of Innovation.

In a dramatic opening, Tom Peters says it's all about "I-N-N-O-V-A-T-I-O-N." Peters is a legendary business guru for good reason, he tells it like it is. In "Circle of Innovation" Peters talks about how our world is now in a constant state of flux, and to prosper businesses must wake up and take action.

A very busy text, "The Circle of Innovation" contains hidden gems at every turn that may very well spell the difference between success and outright failure for your company.

Products and Services are quickly becoming commodities and being in a commodity business is a dangerous place to be. If you are to have any hope of success, you must offer a compelling reason for someone to do business with you and your company.

"The Circle of Innovation" offers tremendous insight on how to create compelling reasons for customers to do business with you. To keep us alert, limber, and ready for action, Peters provokes and cajoles his readers to THINK:

* We Are All Michelangelos: He shows how to transform every jobholder" into a full-fledged businessperson.

* All Value Comes from the Professional Services: Because ... "It all boils down to the expertise of people, masses of them, booking, in some cases, BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in revenues."

* The System is the Solution: How to build great systems - which go far beyond nuts and bolts.

* Create Waves of Lust: Quality is no longer an automatic advantage.

* Little Things Are the Only Things. As the Blight of Sameness encroaches on market after market, design is often the best tool for sustainable differentiation.

All in all, a great book that will make you question much of what you do. In doing so, you will create a much more powerful and long-lasting company.

5 out of 5 stars The cutest kids book ever!!!!.......2007-04-24

I loved this book. It was so cute. I thoughtit was good for every one. It was about a kid who wonders about how it would be if he was shrunken and when he was sleeping he actully shrunk. But he had to do some chores and they were the simplest things like watering the plants or feeding the goldfish turn into the biggest adventure.

5 out of 5 stars George Shrinks .......2007-04-20

I gave this book a five because a little kid name George has a dream of him being small like a "teddy bear". When he had the dream he was in his bed sleeping, his mom left a note of chores and he was doing the chores. The "scary" part in the book was when the cat sees George and thinks his is a toy and the cat tries to put his claw on him ,but George runs and hides from the cat. This book is great and I think William took a long time doing the cover and pictures and I say the book cover and pictures are really beautiful. I love this book because he had a dream that was weird that he was small and that he had to do big chores. I would recommend this book because it is a cute book for a 1st and 2nd graders I think they will love it because all of the cute pictures and the funny pictures they would love to read this book a lot of times and I would like to some day read it again because it would be so nice to read it over and over.

I love this book and give it over and over to all the children that I care most about

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for younger readers.......2005-12-26

The story grabs the reader's interest from the first page as George wakes up much smaller than the teddy bear on his pillow. Then he sets out to accomplish the list of chores left by his parents.

The watercolor pictures are beautifully done and full of detail, making for great opportunities to discover more as it is read again and again. It is interesting without being scary so it is perfect for younger readers. It is silly to see George sitting on the fawcet handle brushing his teeth, diving into the fish bowl to feed the fish, or flying a small plane from the mail box to his room.

The "scary" part is hiding from the cat, then having the cat swat his toy plane out of the air. The cat has George cornered when he suddenly returns to normal size in the nick of time. His parents arrive home and all is well.

As a teacher, this book can be used in the classroom to encourage students to generate their own stories from another perspective.

Perfect for a three year old and at four it continues to be one of his favorites. Great book! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars terrific illustrations with sparse text.......2003-02-01

"One day, while his mother and father were out, George dreampt he was small, and when he woke up he found it was true."

So begins this delightful book written and illustrated by William Joyce. George then begins to tackle the "To Do" list his parents have left him, though the chores are now monumentally more difficult since he is only a few inches tall!

The text is spare, being primarily the parents' list of things to do. What makes the book special are the accompanying color illustrations that show George tackling each of the (usually trivial) tasks. Kids will love seeing the challenges of being really small.

Lots of fun.

    Book Description

I believe personality makeovers are just as possible as appearance makeovers, claims birth order guru Dr. Kevin Leman. In Be Your Own Shrink, he describes four personality indicators (birth order, personality types, childhood memories, and love languages) to help readers develop positive habits, use self-talk to work through tough times, marshal their imaginative energy, and more. Once readers understand their strengths, their weaknesses, their predispositions, the forces of nature, and how their family background shaped them into the people they are, they can build on who they are and become their personal best. Dr. Leman will show them how!
