1 out of 5 stars Chapter 1.......2007-09-26

I don't know if this book will be any help to you but it was NOT to me...

My wife only read the 1st chapter, "I HATE YOU..." and then she stopped...

I think she found her answer :)

4 out of 5 stars Great Insightful Book.......2007-08-29

This book was received in the requested time frame. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get this book, read it, review it and tell others what I discovered.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-08-28

I wish I had known about this book years ago. Knowing how to put up boundaries with a BPD is very valuable. It is right on target.

4 out of 5 stars I Hate you, Don't Leave Me.......2007-06-10

When I first read this book, I had to stop after each chapter..sometimes after each paragraph to cry. At last, there were people who understood and felt what I had been going through my whole life. It was such a relief. The only down side is that the book is a bit dated.

After a few weeks, I got up the courage to show the book to my husband and suggest that he read it. After all, I'm the one with BPD. When I showed him the book, he said, "Oh, our marriage therapist gave me this book to help me understand you better." My only regret is that I didn't learn about this book sooner.

4 out of 5 stars Borderline Personality Disorder.......2007-06-06

This book is a good introduction to BPD for the lay person. It is not the final word for a clinical professional. Should be read with the understanding that there are gradations of BPD, as exists among all mental illnesses.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Reading and Doing.......2007-08-04

The principles it expounds are sound and the practices it prescribes are effective and beneficial. In a nutshell: it works.

That said, we are fortunate to have a better alternative for an individual who wishes to self-treat, without the assistance of a therapist. The magisterial book, _The Feeling Good Handbook_, by David D. Burns is one of those once-in-a-lifetime works which has no peer.

Both books share the same perspective on changing how you feel. As other reviewers have mentioned, _Mind Over Mood_'s basic tool is called a "thought record." You are instructed to change the way you think by writing down your thoughts and feelings in the thought record. You then identify the evidence for and against your thoughts. You conclude by writing a more balanced view of things.

The primary method of the thought record is looking at the evidence which supports or conflicts with your thoughts.

The basic tool of Burns's book is called a "daily mood log." This tool bears some resemblance to the thought record but there are subtle differences. Whereas Greenberger and Padesky have you critique your thoughts solely in terms of the evidence for and against them, Burns provides you with a more varied toolbox. He has identified a list of ways that we systematically distort our thinking. For example, we might get down on ourselves or others by using the words "should," or "must," or "ought." I might feel bad when I tell myself that "I should have turned left instead of right when I got off the highway." A more balanced thought would be, "I would have preferred that I had turned left and I can accept myself for having turned right." When I develop the habit of examining my thoughts and replacing them with more balanced thoughts, my mood brightens.

I currently am following Greenberger and Padesky's method in that I have done at least one of their thought records daily for 60 days. I haven't done one of Burns's daily mood logs for a few years. But I found Burns's mood logs to be a better method for improving my mood and I plan on rereading Burns's book soon.

_Mind Over Mood_ is an excellent book. I recommend you read it and practice it. If you could only buy one book, I would recommend you buy Burns's book. But most of us have the ability to buy more than one book and _Mind Over Mood_ is certainly worth studying.

I am currently working with the book in conjunction with CBT (Cognitive behaviour Therapy) I was reccommended the book by my therapist. I am finding the book extremely helpful . I think everyone should have a copy whether they are working on themselves with a professional or not. I am learning new life skills. Excellent stuff

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-05-13

My Psychologist recommended this book to me. I ordered it the next day and received it within the week. It has helped me tremendously. I would recommend it to anyone who suffers from depression or any other mood disorder. I would also suggest that a loved one of someone described above read this book also.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Can Change Your Life.......2007-04-10

After years of therapy that helped a little, this book finally transformed my life. Instead of just learning to deal with my crazy anxieties, I was finally able to eliminate them. I am now a firm believer in cognitive behavioral therapy. This book provides easy exercises that work - to teach you how to change your life by changing your thoughts, one at a time.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone and will continue to do so.

Book Description

The first diet that will help you feel good while losing weight written by a respected nutritionist and author of the bestselling books Power Eating and Power Food. Dr. Kleiner is a leading nutrition authority on eating for strength who has put together a diet that has already been successfully tested in a Seattle weight-loss group and documented in a series by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. This book proves that you can choose healthy foods that both make you feel great and, when eaten according to the plan, help you lose weight. Most diets cause chemical changes in the brain that make the dieter feel depressed. The typical plan is often too low in calories. In THE GOOD MOOD DIET the participants eat feel-good foods with both ideal timing and ideal combinationsa balance of protein and fats to go with carbohydrates. Eating from a list of feel-good foods, including fish, flax seed and eggs, and eliminating feel-bad foods including refined sugar, helps dieters feel better and lose weight. However, sweets and alcohol are not tabooeating a bit of chocolate and drinking a glass of red wine a day is okay once youre two weeks into the diet.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as great as I was hoping........2007-09-26

I can see where this "diet" can help people feel good, but it is very impractical for everyday life. For example, the author recommends making a homemade smoothie for your 12:00 snack, which would be fine if I wasn't at work at 12:00. For those who don't want a smoothie at noon, she suggests a small omelet instead. Again, pretty impractical for people who do not work from home.

Despite the impracticalities of following the diet religiously, I have learned a few eating tricks that help me stay full during the day and do improve my energy level.

5 out of 5 stars this works well.......2007-05-28

I have lost several pounds using this diet. When I follow it strictly I do feel good. It is fairly easy to follow, except for the fact that I'm out running around a lot, and then it's harder to grab something on the go that works in with this. If I remember to pack my own I can stick with it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally! This one really works -- and is manageable.......2007-05-28

Three of us are using this book. We're about 6 weeks into it. I'll give it 100% endorsement. You can easily put meals together that will meet your own eating preferences. If anything, we find we can't consume all the food she proposes, because we're all physically small -- in the 5' to 5'4" range and simply can't eat that much. Also, this diet is targetting 30-50 somethings and we're older than that, so our metabolism is slower.

We've tried various other approaches and failed. This one is easy and weight comes off easily. Although the two ladies involved are losing inches more slowly than I, I've gone from 136 to 130 in this time. As my "design weight" is about 127, this is a huge and very welcomed surprise.

5 out of 5 stars The Good Mood Diet: Feel Great While You Lose Weight.......2007-05-14

The Good Mood Diet: Feel Great While You Lose Weight book is a work in progress and don't have a final opinion yet.

5 out of 5 stars This one works!.......2007-05-12

This is a wonderful book. Finally a diet that makes you feel good while working. It is easy to follow and you don't feel like you're even on a diet. You can't get hungry with all the food you eat. Definitely give this book a try!

5 out of 5 stars a must have for all with bipolar.......2007-10-06

This book is packed with very helpful information for both the person with the disorder and the family members. Excellent coverage of not only what bipolar is, but the what bipolar looks like to you, your doctor and your family is wonderful. I know people thought I was just being extravagant, but now, reading this, they know I couldn't stop myself, and that at the time, it made perfect sense to me.
Insightful and in plain English for those of us without medical degrees, this book has helped both me and my family in numerous ways. I hope everyone with bipolar disorder gets their hands on a copy and studies it with family and friends, it truly is a great resource.

An eclectic mix of cognitive-behavioral techniques, skills training, Zen, and existentialism, DBT helps readers pay attention to their emotions, assess their blocks to controlling them, become less judgmental of themselves when they lose control, and ultimately eliminate overpowering feelings. Having just been diagnosed with BPD, I have found books such as this very helpful as my husband and I discuss the best way for our family to deal with my sensitivity to emotions and mood changes. My oldest son is also displaying behaviors indicative of BPD and we are looking for help for him, too.

You can teach 4 year olds to count. You can teach an old dog to fetch. At 45 I thought there was no help for me. I just couldn't change. But this book helped me to learn the skills I needed to get along with myself my family and society. It is dry reading but keep at it and you will find a new person within you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Workbook.......2007-05-19

I have been having trouble controling my emotions my whole life. I was never taught to control my emotions, so it has always been a struggle for me. Following the books guidelines and working one chapter at a time has helped me so much. It has improved my relationship with my boyfriend and given me a happier outlook on life knowing that my emotions are part of me but don't have to be who I am. I highly reccommend it, it's just like doing a workbook for a english or psych class. I also purchased the Self-Esteem Workbook. It's been just as helpful to me as this one.

5 out of 5 stars RELIEF.......2007-02-28

This book is a joy to read. It offers (in simple to understand language) an understanding of your emotions and many tools on how to handle them. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you grew up in a family where your parents had emotional problems and were not able to offer you guidance or validation of your emotions while growing up.

It's a great treasure.....tb

Learn to become more present in your life experiences. Develop skills for calming and relaxing the mind and body. By putting the exercises into practice, find more power for controlling disruptive feelings in your life. The resources and techniques in this book provide you with a direction that leads to greater experiential learning and dramatically effective, life-affirming attitudes.

Mindfulness, a quality basic to all human beings, can be described as receptive, nonjudgmental present moment awareness, practiced by paying attention in the present moment. 5 out of 5 stars A life-changing book.......2007-06-27

Along with Jon Kabat-Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living, this is an indispensable book for anyone who suffers from GAD, SAD, or panic disorder. This is compassionate, pragmatic, deep therapy that has great power on its own and can be a great supplement to working with a therapist. There's strong current science behind it, and 2500 years of Buddhist practice. Very simply, if you learn to focus in the present you won't worry so much about the future, or beat yourself up about the past.

5 out of 5 stars Only half way through, but give it 5 stars already.......2007-01-08

This book is wonderful. I am only half way through, but it already deserves five stars. It is a great book if you take your time and do the work and pratice the "mindfulness". It can and will change your life. I have noticed during a very unexpected stressful day recently, that several times the word mindfulness popped into my head and I just centered myself in the moment instead of thinking of how behind I was and how mucy more I had to do that day. And at that point, I hadn't even really learned what mindfulness meant. Give this book a try. I don't think you'll be sorry.

Mindfulness is happiness. If you are not appreciating the present moment, you are not fully alive. This great book helped me understand what it really means to be mindful. It shows us how to be more mindful in our everyday lives by approaching life in a totally new way. I highly recommend this excellent book! If you like these positive life-changing books, you might also like "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. This is another fantastic book that has changed my life! It looks at things from more of a relationship perspective but it is completely outstanding! This very special book puts your life into perspective and I guarantee that it will also improve all of your relationships dramatically! Have fun!

Book Description

You wish you didn’t spend as much time worrying as you do, but you just can’t seem to help it. Worrying feels like second nature. It’s what helps you solve your problems and prevents you from making mistakes. It’s what motivates you to be prepared—if you didn’t worry, things might get out of hand. Worry protects you, prepares you, and keeps you safe.

For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Robert L. Leahy has successfully helped thousands of people defeat the worry that is holding them back. The Worry Cure is his new, comprehensive approach to help you identify, challenge, and overcome all types of worry, using the most recent research and his more than two decades of experience in treating patients.

5 out of 5 stars THE CLINICAL PYSCHOLOGIST praises The Worry Cure.......2007-09-16

Worry is not only ubiquitous to the anxiety
disorders, but brief, less severe manifestations
of this cognitive phenomena are pervasive throughout
the general population. Who amongst us has not
worried at one time or another? Moreover the deleterious
effects of chronic and severe worry are not confined
to a specific disorder like generalized anxiety
disorder but instead are a major symptom feature of
some of the most common mental health problems in
our society such as major depression, social phobia,
and substance abuse. In the daily routine of a clinical
practice, therapists repeatedly face patients who
feel defeated by a crippling state of worry. And yet,
it is surprising that worry was practically ignored by
clinical researchers until the last 10-15 years. Until
recently the empirical literature had little to offer the
treatment of worry and even less was available for
the general public in the form of scientifically based
self-help books.
All that has changed with the publication
of Robert Leahy's book entitled "The Worry Cure".
Written in a systematic, instructive, and well-illustrated
manner, Dr. Leahy explains the nature, etiology,
persistence and treatment of pathological worry
in a style that is readily comprehensible to the general
public. Although the book is rooted in a cognitive
behavioral perspective, it is not dogmatic in its theoretical
orientation. Findings from mindfulness cognitive
therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy,
and emotion-focused therapy are discussed in terms
of their relevance for the treatment of chronic worry.
Throughout the book Dr. Leahy remains true to the
empirical traditional by ensuring that his insights into
the nature of worry and its alleviation are anchored in
the latest empirical research on worry. When recommending
this book for their patients, clinicians can
be confident that the guidance offered in its pages is
based on the latest findings in the research literature.
illustrations.
The chapters are full of rating forms and
other clinical aids to help individuals implement
the recommended changes in their thinking and
behavior. What is particularly innovative in these
chapters is the focus on generic interventions
that can be adapted to any type of worry content.
Chapters 11 through 15 deal with worry associated
with specific issues such as concern about negative
evaluation and acceptance of others, abandonment
and rejection, health, finances and work or achievement.
These chapters deal with topics so common
in clinical practice that it is difficult to think of
patient who would not benefit from reading at least
selected chapters.
In many respects the title of this book, The
Worry Cure, is a little misleading. Although this
definitely a self-help book on worry, it's contribution
is so much greater. Even if you did not suffer
with worry, there is much to be gained by reading
The Worry Cure. For example the chapter on dealing
with failure is probably the best clinical advice we
have seen on the topic. As well the chapter on financial
worries provides creative insights into a pervasive
problem in our society that rarely receives
the attention of clinical writers. In short, The Worry
Cure is an authoritative, clinically rich, and practical
handbook for dealing with worry in all of its
various manifestations. The therapist will find this
a valuable bibliotherapy tool when treating anxiety
and depression. It is also an indispensable source
of psychological knowledge on worry and its treatment
for all mental health practitioners. It should
be required reading for any student of psychotherapy.
If I could choose only 10 clinical texts for my
library, The Worry Cure would be one of them!.

4 out of 5 stars Unique and usful only if you dare to use it.......2007-07-08

Great and useful book overall. Has some interesting and unique perspectives on dealing with toxic worry (think generalized anxiety).

Dr. Leahy, the worry specialist, who is a well-respected writer of many professional books, fills pages with a lot of ways to attack this stubborn anxiety, reaching into many disciplines (philosophy, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy and so on).

The information is very useful, especially, if you move beyond cognitive distortion methods and address some "deeper level" issues such as examining core beliefs about oneself and the world, meaning of a threat, uncertainty, and rumination. All crucial stuff.

It seems to me, someone who is anxious has some difficulties with facing his own anxiety and is prone to procrastination and avoidance as this anxiety protects itself violently and tries to survive by putting out so many obstacles. So, I am saying the next sentence with great caution as don't want to discourage anyone from this helpful book. However, I got a bit overwhelmed by this book's abundance of material and it's deep daring level. If you dare to venture into this deep examining on your own, I wish you courage, however, I think it would be better suited for someone who has already started dealing with his/her anxieties rather than a newbie. Maybe for someone who has a support of a therapist or someone who is super-motivated-although I don't know anyone like this. It's definitely meant for someone who is very psychologically-minded and intersted in the way mind works.

Having said this, if a self-help book is your choice of medicine, please know the book's usefulness and its broad scope surpasses many other books on the subject, and could be of immense benefit to a sufferer.

Also, I was very surprised that there were no chapters on learning to relax physically with guided muscle relaxation, breathing control, exercise and meditation. Very useful stuff that you can find in many general anxiety books, but somehow very often overlooked by writers of many cognitive therapy books.

If I may suggest two great primers that are easier to use for a newly diagnosed who is willing to take "baby steps": Anxiety Workbook by Edmund Bourne, and the second, Mind over Mood, by Podesky. Once the system is in place, everyone would benefit from this book, which has lots to add to move you futher to the worry cure (if it ever existed :-))

5 out of 5 stars The BIBLE of the worrier-99.9% of honest society!!! 20*******'s.......2007-04-26

No other book has so radically challenged and CHANGED the way that I have perceived and reacted to situations as Robert Leahy's THE WORRY CURE.It is intensely practical,down-to-earth and so readable that it is not only a continued challenge to me,but a must for daily living. This is not a book that spouts platitudes, but rather a book of such common sense and wisdom that I find myself amazed at the silliness of my own thought processes and the joy of seeing myself undergoing a successful and daily change at the age of 52!This book is the most valuable resource that I have ever come upon in dealing in the realms of cognitive (behaviour-thought changing) therapy. Many of formally accepted and taught coping mechanisms that I had adopted, which never worked, have now been dispelled and new mechanisms to live have been grafted into my daily existence and, believe you me, they have been found positively to be 100% effective. Many people may not feel that they are worriers.I certainly never thought that worry was my root problem.Read this book. You just may find out that worry is that elusive "something" that has unknowingly been plagueing you ,your mind, your body and your soul all these years.I first borrowed this book from the library, but you will want to own your own copy as you will be underlining and highlighting and making many marginal notes and referring again and again to the practical therapeutic suggestions that Leahy postulates.

5 out of 5 stars My new best friend is Robert Leahy, MD.......2007-03-25

Dr. Leahy is authoritative, learned, witty and wise, eloquent and compassionate, etc, etc.
This is more than a mere self-help boof for our time. It is certainly that. But it also offers a spiritual path that will inevitably lead to emotional freedom and potential bliss.
Thanks, Dr. Bob!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-03

I have the audiobook version and highly recommend it, the narrator is excellent. This book has almost immediately changed my life and explained things to me in a way no one ever could. The author knew exactly how I think, why I think that way, and used that to break down (in relatively seemingly simple) ways to help. Worriers are generally deep thinkers and highly analytical people and a simple "Don't stress about it" from friends just doesn't help. Amazing book!

Book Description

FOR THOSE WHO SEARCH The program outlined in The Low Blood Sugar Handbook is for you. It is an optimum lifestyle not only for functional hypoglycemics (low blood sugar sufferers), but also for those suffering from premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and everyone else who desires a healthy and productive life.

Women who suffer from PMS often have low blood sugar. Once the blood sugar is stabilized, the PMS can be dealt with more effectively.

This book is written by low blood sugar sufferers rather than by a medical person since only sufferers have the insight into dealing with the everyday situations of low blood sugar. After working with hundreds of hypoglycemics, Edward and Patricia Krimmel have articulated the things that only sufferers can know. They give the clear, practical and complete advice you need for understanding and dealing with the everyday nitty- gritty of low blood sugar.

The chapters of the book deal with such practical matters as being able to identify if you have low blood sugar, what it is, how serious it is and what to do if you have the condition. The four dimensions of the KRIMMEL PROGRAM are: 1. Food ethic 2. Exercise 3. Fun & laughter 4. Sleep, rest & relaxation

A fifth dimension is found in chapters 5, 6, 8, and 9. The information is unique to this handbook. Only through the application of the fifth dimension, can the low blood sugar sufferer get total value from the other 4 dimensions.

Low blood sugar is a personal affair. Only through personal initiative can it be controlled. There is no medication or "cure all" for it. Only through the proper program and understanding your body chemistry can this condition be controlled.

If you're willing to spend enough time And put out enough effort You can solve every problem

1 out of 5 stars out of date.......2006-09-04

This book was probably very important when it was published in 1992. But more than 10 years have passed, and the book is out of date. First, I find it suspicious that the authors blame hypoglycemia for 60 different symptoms. They take a "victim" attitude that everything unlikable in one's personality and habits can be blamed on one's hypoglycemia. I hardly find that to be the case in my own life. My bad temper is mine to conquer and not the "fault" of my hypoglycemia.

Second, the authors wrote this book before stevia was widely available as a hypoglycemia-safe, all-natural sugar substitute. I would love to find more information about stevia and recipes that include stevia.

Finally, this book was written before the glycemic index was widely understood. The New Glucose Revolution by Brand-Miller et al. will help one to learn the difference between low-glycemic index (gi) foods that will help to keep one's blood sugar stable and high-gi foods that will lead to the ups and downs of hypoglycemia.

5 out of 5 stars The best treatment for Hypoglycemia.......2006-05-19

What an excellent book. Shame on me for not writing this review until now. I have been following the book since 2003 and it has changed my life dramatically. I can think and act very clearly and all my symptoms disappeared. Watch out, if you deviate from the program after starting it, symptoms will worsen. A must read for people with low blood sugar problems.

5 out of 5 stars The best guide I've found yet!.......2006-04-23

I found I suffered from 49 of the 60 symptoms of LBS just in the last week. I've had this book since I was 6 months pregnant in 1996 and found out I had LBS, but never took the time to read it; until this last week while I was too sick to get out of bed.

One of the biggest things I suffer from is insomnia, no energy, headaches, irritability, mood swings, PAIN always, Super PMS, just to name a few. I read this book, followed the basic instructions, and found myself sleeping thru the night for the first time in years. This without taking a myraid of, natural mind you, medicines to help me get to sleep...I never stayed there! I always woke several times a night, couldn't get to sleep to begin with, one time I was awake for 7 days straight before crashing (usually it's 5 days)...that was harsh!

First day...just by dropping the bad things, eating every two hours, and directly before I go to bed; I had energy to get thru the day with spare (even my daughter mentioned it's nice to see you have energy to move for once...encouragement enough for me to keep at it). And then to be able to sleep mostly thru night...a huge start!

Where I went wrong...I never believed in eating past 6pm, I switched to water only, never ate snacks, and ate 2-3 meals a day; thinking this was the typical "healthy diet"...no wonder I felt horrilbe all the time. I avoided sugar like the plague knowing how I react to it along with most juices...I usually emmediately feel the impact after eating or drinking sucrose or fructose anything!

I've been searching for 3years, several Dr's later...and yes the typical prescriptions for depression, anxiety, etc...No they did not help...in the very least! What really gets me is, I've had the answers since 1996, and never took the time to read this book. I would never have been as bad as I managed to get if I read it when I bought it :( Recommendation: don't buy a book meant to help you and not read it emmediately ;)

I would highly recommend reading this book, if you have low blood sugar or someone you know and love does. It gives great insight to a little known, but highly dibilitating, condition...which wreaks havoc on the person who suffers, this is something that will never go away...once you get a grip on it, you can feel normal once again. It's a learning process that keeps going as well...I keep the book with me always.

As it turns out my Husband, two children, and I all have LBS...so
I will be doing a lot more learning, research, etc...to make all of our lives normal. A little hint, no two people are the same body chemistry, we all have our own reactions to different foods; so what works to raise your sugar to normal, may not work for the other family members as I've found out...it's a long journey to undertake, but they're well worth it!

I truely do hope this helps...it did me. I'm ordering extra copies now, as we speak, for my sister, my brother, and one for my Hubby to keep with him as a reference! Good luck!!!!

5 out of 5 stars previous reviewer didn't get it, cause he doesn't have it!.......2006-01-28

The preceding reviewer obviously doesn't have LBS. Lucky for him. I love chocolate cake more than words can say, but I will fosake my love of sweets (or maybe it was addiction) to have a normal life.

God bless the Krimmel's for explaining what doctors don't get. The difference in how my son and I feel is infinitely worth the funny looking meals and constant monitoring!

I wasn't nuts, I have hypoglycemia, I'm better now.

My son wasn't a bad kid, he has hypoglycemia, he's better now.

This book could change your life. No joke.

1 out of 5 stars Not as good as I thought it would be based on the reviews.......2005-12-02

This book was long winded and unreasonable with it's diet recommendations. For someone on a tight budget and who loves the tastes of food, you would not like this book. All the allowed foods are blan, plane and not something most people I know would stick with. The author tells you his life story which takes a lot of time to get through it to read the important points. I am going to try a modified Atkins approach instead. The reviews are what I based my buying decision on for this book and I am thankful I didn't spend more then 5.00 for it. It wasn't worth my money.

Book Description

Six years ago, John McManamy, a successful financial journalist with a law degree, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through his successful website and newletter, he has turned his struggles into a lifelong dedication to helping others struggling with depression and biopolar disorder reclaim their lives. In this book he will share his own experiences and struggles and the struggles of his fellow patients, while offering a guide to making the most out of life with these challenging disorders. Like the other successful titles in our Living Well series, this book will offer a holistic approach to battling depression and BD, including everything from diagnosis to associated illnesses and symptoms to medication and talk therapy and even what to expect and how to cope with the effects these disorders have on relationships and sex.

Most importantly, McManamy writes with a compassionate and eloquent voice, describing his belief that depression is a wide spectrum that reaches from occasional bouts of depression to full–fledged bipolar disorder. This will be the first book to help patients recognize the diversity of their disorder, while offering wide–ranging solutions to keeping their lives in order and living well.

5 out of 5 stars What makes this book fantastic..........2007-08-19

...is that instead of accommodating you to your illness, it hands you tools and a mission: REMISSION IS THE GOAL. Where other books hold your hand and tell you to use your tools, this one evaluates each tool so that you can use your intelligence and experience to choose what to use. After I read this book I saw pharmacalogical psychiatry in a whole new way: instead of drifting from drug to drug, I am deploying the ones that work best for me. I decide what side effects are OK. I decide whether to try a new drug. The doctor's opinion plays an important role, but I get better results when I carefully and conscientiously follow my instincts.

This book is filled with things I might deploy, from lifestyle and diet tinkering to medicine. And the goal of all this is to drive my illness into full and complete remission. After reading this book I am doing better than I have in a long time.

Don't miss the advice about taking your mood temperature frequently, as opposed to waiting for the symptoms to begin. Intercepting changing moods before they gain momentum is extremely important.

Take a giant step ahead from the patronizing how-to books out there and the currently fashionable medicines, and understand what's new and what's happening in depression and bipolar. Some readers will find a few chapters heavy with science, and decide to skip to the main points, but those who want to know how this disease is being fought and conquered will find it far ahead of other volumes. Oh, I'm sure there are some other good books on bipolar out there, but if you're ready to change your entire perspective on your illness for the better, give this one a try. It may not change your life as dramatically and rapidly as it did mine, but I defy anyone with bipolar illness to argue that this book isn't full of the most potent information available between two covers.

For those who are also ill, my best wishes for your recovery, and remember, THINK REMISSION, not treatment of symptoms.

5 out of 5 stars From One who Lives this Every Day.......2007-08-14

It took many years and many medications for depression before my doctor finally diagnosed me with Bipolar Disorder. The first book I bought and read was John Mcmanamy's "Living Well with Depression and Bipolar Disorder - "
I couldn't put it down as so many pages were "me". My husband read it with much interest, and said it helped him to understand events of the past and how we might both deal with this problem together in the future.
I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Holistically Awesome!.......2007-07-21

Before reading this book, I had alredy read at least 5-7 books on the topic. This book is the most holistic book I have ever read on the topic. It covers everything, and it is written in a very down-to-earth manner. It is a book with ideas and concepts that almost anybody with bipolar II can relate too. I have almost 20 books on this subject, and this is MY NUMBER 1!!! It is not only beneficial to the person suffering from this illness, but amazingly wholesome and complete for anybody wanting to understand more about this illness in a loved one.

4 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2007-07-12

I have not finished the book, but the information I have obtained has been very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Living Well with Depression and Bipolar Disorder.......2007-03-09

This is a great book for those suffering from a mood disorder..the most common, and in many ways, most complex type of mental illness. John McNanamy, whom I have met personally, uses illustrations from his past and present, and anecdotes from visitors to his award-winning website to explain what mood disorders are, and how to effectively treat and manage them. He backs his points up with the latest clinical data and findings, and the book is highly readable for those with, and without the illness.

Book Description

Studies show that one in five of us worries too much about our health. In fact, pervasive worry over preserving health or preventing disease can _itself_ become a disorder, one with very real physical and emotional consequences. The condition is known as health anxiety, and it often leads people to misinterpret minor symptoms and normal bodily sensations as the warning signs of a serious disease. In It's Not All in Your Head, health psychologists Drs. Gordon Asmundson and Steven Taylor encourage readers to consider whether excessive worry may be their greatest cause for concern. This straightforward and effective self-help program teaches sufferers how the physical side effects of anxiety--like muscle tension, nausea, or a quickened heart rate--may compound their sense that something is wrong. For anyone whose personal life or career has been disrupted by health anxiety--and for their caring yet frustrated loved ones--this compassionate, nonjudgmental, and practical book may be just what the doctor ordered.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent !!.......2006-03-21

None of the other books listed by Amazon sounded like they dealt with health anxiety, so I tried this one. It is EXCELLENT!!! It is very thorough and simple to understand. It has wonderful tips to use as well as suggestions on how to work with doctors and when to get additional help. Not much is written for the regular person on health anxiety, so this is a very valuable resource. Health anxiety is a form of anxiety in which the person worries excessively about his health and bodily sensations. Going to the doctor repeatedly for assurance does not help because you can get addicted to the reassurance! By the time you get home from the doctor after he tells you that you are fine, you have convinced yourself that he must have made some type of error or omission of tests, and you are super worried all over again! This book uses cognitive behavior therapy to help break the cycle of worry and fear over symptoms.
