Customer Reviews:
I can't agree.......2007-08-02
I can't agree with those who criticize this book for being like all other real estate investment books. This book is a breath of fresh air from many other real estate books! The author actually offers practical advice from his experience, and its written in a readable and humorous manner.
In particular, the author's description of the Haywood Houses purchase on pagers 16 to 25 is a good example that addresses many of the issues that new (and experienced) investors face, such as:
1.) Where do you find your investment houses? Jay found his in the newspaper. I found my first investment property in the newspaper also. It was a great fix-up bargain at $85,000 in 2002, and is a great rental property now, bringing in over $200/month;
2.) What do you do when you find a good property? Jay says "act quickly" when you find a property in neglect. Jay says houses in neglect are worth big bucks for us do-it-yourself fix-up investors. Jay's list of what constitutes an ugly property, including "unsightly yards, no painting done for years, broken down fences, unsupervised dogs & cats." This list should be taped on our walls to constantly remind investors what we are looking for;
3.) Fixing people problems. The property was overrun by scary looking people with tattoos who drank beer and worked on junk cars. The owner wanted out. Jay fixed the sort-term people problem in exchange for receiving valuable long-term benefits.
This is a useful book that I keep handy.
Terry Sprouse - author of the forthcoming book, "Fix 'em Up, Rent 'em Out: How to Start Your Own House Fix-up and Rental Business in Your Spare Time."
This book is worth $46,000.00. Here's what it did for me:.......2007-03-29
I have read this book 5 times now, and am putting his strategies to good use. Using Jay's strategies, I just fixed up an older house in my neighborhood. With 3 month's part time work, (I also teach 3rd grade) I now have 28k in equity, and 209.00 per month positive cashflow. The house was even owner financed, 2% down, and deferred payments too! (Jay's strategies). Next week, I will close on a second rental property for $46,500, and it appraises for $65,000. Some folks say Jay is too folksy, but he can be as folksy as he wants to be if his strategies get me $46,000 in equity in less than 6 months.
Good basic primer for beginners.......2006-11-22
I found this book to be a good primer for new real estate investors. Seasoned pros could find a nugget or two as well. More than anything else, DeCima's writing style, folksy as it is, is just fun to read. A good addition to your real estate library.
How much would you pay for a good tip?.......2006-01-16
For the most part I find book reveiws helpful. But I wonder about those by who expect to get the whole nine and a half yards for $12.98. If I can get one tip that may help me make thounsands $$ (and it has) for the price of a Subway lunch, then I'm ordering up. A guide to Investing in Fixer-Uppers, $12.98; Investing in yourself, priceless.
better than the rest........2006-01-12
Best RE book I've read. Read over 30 so far. This guy doesn't blow smoke up your butt like the other RE gurus.

Lee Parks knows his stuff!.......2007-08-31
I bought this book for my boyfriend. I read it,too. We met Lee Parks at the motorcycle show during the winter and got to personally thank him for a really useful/helpful book. He writes with a sense of humour. That comes in handy for a slightly jumpy beginner motorcyclist like myself. Get this book. You'll refer to it again and again!
Total Control - High Performance Street Riding Techniques.......2007-08-23
Book covers a wide range of subjects including suspension set-up, rider attitude and fitness, conquering riding fear, motorcycle/rider aerodynamics. It concentrates on traction management, different ways a rider can conserve traction as curves are negotiated - places where many motorcyclists crash. Techniques are well described and diagrammed, and are applicable on the track as well as the street. Practice guides are included and parallel Lee's Advanced Riding Clinic course. Book makes a good supplement to the course. Both novice and experienced riders can gain valuable information from reading this book.
Top marks.......2007-08-22
Top marks for a book well written. Being only new to the motorbike riding scene, this easy to read and understand book is great for the beginner. Has lots of hints and tips to take on board. I hightly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn the ride.
Great read, even for a scooterist!.......2007-08-14
I was apprehensive of this book by looking at the cover and seeing a sport bike. As I began to read, however, it pertains to anything motorized on two wheels. It is well written and easy to understand and easily applicable to any given riding style.
Great information but..........2007-08-06
The book is full of very useful information and techniques for street and track riding and is a great addition to any motorcyclist's collection of books on riding technique.
The thing that ruined it for me was the author's picture (head shot with different and sometimes goofy expressions) on each chapter's beginning... I found it a bit annoying.
Book Description
How do I handle a friend who saps my energy? When do I love without limit? We've all asked these questions. And too often our responses are either to back out of relationships or to give up on impossible people. Dr. Les Parrott shows us other options, including setting boundaries, giving the gift of grace, and leaving room for God.
Customer Reviews:
Good for Starting Out.......2007-01-02
I read this book when I had just graduated from college and was entering the professional workplace for the first time. This book gave a great overview of problem personalities and some suggestions for dealing with them. I found the book to be helpful.
A Few High-Maintenance Insights.......2005-01-24
Parrott here gives a few helpful insights on how to respond to the seemingly impossible people whom all of us encounter at work, at home, or at school. While he does a bit of stereotyping with his various labels, he effectively communicates his message of identifying the more challenging aspects of relating to numerous people around us.
He wisely advises each of us to look within ourselves to identify each of the flaws that tend to annoy us in others. Usually, we can find the same quirks within us that are so bothersome around us. He then offers particular remarks on how to better handle each type of high-maintenance relationship covered.
I only gave this book three stars because it was more entertaining than enlightening. In other words, I could relate to the characteristics he was describing, but there wasn't a substantial amount of solid advice on how to respond to them. This title is a quick, easy read, but for in-depth advice on any high-maintenance relationship, I would look elsewhere. Parrott simply tries to cover too much ground here in too little pages.
Not For Victims of Abusive Relationships.......2004-07-31
This book is about maintaining relationships with abusive, destructive, untrustworthy, and downright dangerous people, who are euphemistically referred to as "high-maintenance". The victim of such an abuser is encouraged to keep the relationship together at all costs and given suggestions for adapting to and living with the abuse, including becoming more sympathic to his abuser by recognizing the exact same abusive tendency in himself-which may be true for some characteristics but is quite a stretch if you are going to assume EVERYONE has EVERY offensive trait to some degree.
The author makes the victim solely responsible for staying in an abusive relationship without ever confronting the abuser or understanding that the time may come when it is necessary to leave the relationship for one's own sanity or mental, emotional, spiritual, and even physical health. The abusive person is absolved of all responsibility for his own behavior.
The book never addresses the extreme damage long-term exposure to abusers does to a victim, nor does it address the responsiblity of others to stand up to evil and protect weaker people , such as children in the family, from it.
The author quotes Scripture as a rationale and justification for his premise of tolerating ongoing abuse; however, Scripture does not support this thinking. In the Bible, we are held responsible for our behavior. The Bible tells us to forgive AS GOD FORGAVE US (Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:13).God forgives us when we come to him, confess our sin, ask for forgiveness (apologize) and REPENT (turn from our sinful ways).(see Ezekiel 33:10-19, Isaiah 55:6, Jeremiah 6:16 & 26:3, Luke 13:3 & 5, Acts 3:19). He does NOT forgive those who are 'stiff-necked', continue doing evil, or refuse to repent. The Lord does not expect more of us than he himself is willing to do! God requires repentance, and so should we.
TAKE HEED TO YOURSELVES: IF THY BROTHER TRESPASS AGAINST THEE, REBUKE HIM; AND IF HE REPENT, FORGIVE HIM.....Luke 17:3
Luke 17:3 is the scripture often misquoted, usually by an abuser or his enabler, when he tells you that the Bible says 'Forgive and Forget', or that you must forgive him because you are a Christian. However, Jesus is very specific when He tells us to REBUKE the sinner, and IF HE REPENTS, to forgive him.
In Matthew 18:15-17, Jesus gives us a model for rebuking one who sins against us, and ends by telling us to "treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector" (shun him) if he refuses to listen. God does not want us to continue to be abused, in fact, we are told a number of times to shun evildoers (Psalm 37:9, Psalm 119:115, Matthew 18:17, Titus 3:10-11, 1 Corinthians 5:11).
Additionally, a distinction must be made between forgiveness and reconciliation, or remaining in a relationship. We CAN forgive and still choose not to remain in relationship with one who has betrayed or abused us. We are not required to expose ourselves or our loved ones to harmful, destructive, or dangerous people. "Warn a divisive person once, then warn him a second time. After that, HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH HIM. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned"....Titus 3:10-11
Furthermore, we are very clearly instructed in the Scriptures to rebuke wicked people. "Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning".....1 Timothy 5:20NIV
"When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul"....Ezekiel 33: 8-9 KJV. Doing our best to STOP evil is required for us to save our own souls.
A much more helpful book about handling abusive relationships from a Biblical perspective is "Boundaries" by Drs. Henry Cloud and John Townsend, who are well-known Christian psychologists. This book will truly teach victims of abuse how to deal with abusive people, and it also includes Scriptural teachings.
I was very disappointed in High- Maintenance Relationships and do not recommend it to anyone dealing with such people. Victims of Back-stabbers, Control- Freaks, Green-Eyed Monsters, Steamrollers, Critics, Volcanoes, and the other "characters" in this book have enough problems without being made to feel as if the sole responsibility for making a success out of a relationship with a toxic person, who merrily continues on harming others, is on their shoulders, and if the relationship fails, it is their fault because they could have done more to salvage it.
As the director of Luke 17:3 Miinistries for Adult Daughters of Abusive or Controlling Birth-families, I feel that this book may do more harm than good. It victimizes a person who is the target of abuse a second time- by making him feel guilty for not improving and continuing his relationship with someone the book itself refers to as "impossible." If you really need help and are looking for a book with constructive actions you can take, this is not it.
God wants us to be FREE from wicked people, and HE will free us if we obey his word and follow HIS instructions for dealing with them. "They have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me. Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long. But the Lord is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked"....Psalm 129:2-4
High-Maintence Gets a High Score.......2001-01-09
Les Parrott write a wonderfuly applicable book especially for today's work environment. With bosses who are "steam-rollers" to neighbors who are "gossips," Parrot takes you on a humorous yet real journey to explore 15 different types of problem personalities that you and I deal with everyday. I have ever used this book for a young adult book study on how to cope with the people we encounter every day. A must have and a must read to survive in the jungles of personal relationships.
Book Description
From Willys and Overland Jeeps of World War II, to the CJ models of '70s and early '80s, to the slightly more civilized Wrangler, the Jeep has become an American icon. Jeep has maintained its popularity by updating and modernizing the traditional two-door, removable-top Jeep without watering down its off-road capability. Jeep owners love to personalize their vehicles and modify them for better performance on and off road. In High-Performance Jeep Wrangler TJ Builder's Guide, author Christian Lee explains how to upgrade your Wrangler's suspension, axles, differentials, engine, transfer case, wheels and tires, skid plates, and more, using aftermarket and salvage-yard upgrades. This book includes over 300 full-color images and drawings to show beginners and experienced Jeepers how to do things right. Lee even has special sections for basic driving and recovery technique, and a few built-up Jeeps to give you ideas for your own Wrangler.

How to build up a TJ - by yzergod.......2007-06-27
This book is quite informative, especially for somebody new to Jeeps and the TJ in particular. There is a lot of good info for building up a TJ into a capable and reliable trail rig. The author is a bit vague on some of the specifics and the repercussions of some of the different "upgrades" he suggests. I do not share his thought on a Dana 60 being the end all-do all axle for a TJ. He often refers to the D60 and suggests buying one from a reputable builder. With built D60's specifically made to fit a TJ running in upwards of $10,000, this might not be exactly what the budget minded TJ owner (read most TJ owners) can afford or would want to use for a replacement axle. Also, the author speaks negatively about the factory D35 and sometimes of the D44's. These axles can be built to withstand all but the hardcore wheeler.
There is a good amount of info about the special editions and what came on each Jeep, as is there about most of the popular upgrades. I would have liked to see more info about installing some of these upgrades. For example, he mentions LED taillights but does not mention that in the TJ's you'll need to modify or replace the relay or the LED turn signals will blink rapidly. This was the factory's way of letting you know a turn signal bulb was burnt out. Another example would be in the mention of using an Onboard Air system. He shows examples of each type, but does not explore that the average TJ owner can build one using junkyard parts for a fraction of the cost.
There is a lot of different ways Christian Lee could have gone with this book and I am a bit disappointed that he basically compiled information from his magazines that I already knew. I guess with his background, I was expecting a TJ do-it-yourself model kit type instruction manual that walked me through making my TJ a reliable offroad machine worthy of an article in his magazine. All in all though, it is a useful and informative book that I have enjoyed going through a couple of times. I can't help but think that with the author's background and access to information, he could have written a true "builders" guide instead of this "information guide".
BTW, I believe in putting my money where my mouth is. So, to back up my criticisms of this book (which I bought, enjoyed, and recommend) I invite fellow TJ owners to check out my rig and the upgrades I've done to it on my club's site at; [...].Hopefully, I can pay forward some of my knowledge in the same way Christian Lee has.
Another hit from SA Design.......2007-05-13
If you are interested in modifying your Jeep TJ for better performance off-road, then this book is for you. This guide takes you step-by-step through the process and gives plenty of options and advice, so that you can customise your own build up. It also explains the principles involved in the modifications from a technical standpoint, but in a very down-to-earth manner. It is well-illustrated with color photos, and there are lots of sidebars with really great information. At the end is a helpful appendix containing sources for parts and services of all types for off-roaders and jeep owners. This is the second SA Design manual I have purchased and they are really great. Even if you don't own a Jeep, I think there is a lot to be gained from these well-written and organised manuals.
Beginners only.......2007-05-13
If you are looking for any technical info or precise measurements or product testing LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. The book is a good read if you just want someone's opinion regarding what they like; with no dyno or testing to back it up. If you are a beginner or just getting started on your project, this is the place to start, and it provides some good suggestions.

Drawing on their expertise on personal growth in the workplace and from their experience with couples in their popular workshops, Morrie and Arleah Shechtman present a new approach that challenges common notions about what makes a good marriage work. They recognize that myths about marriage often lead people to aim for unrealistic ideals. Examining eight myths about relationships—including “Love will carry you through the hard times,” “You need to work on your relationship if you want it to be good,” and “Spending lots of time together is very important”—the book also presents contrasting realities to help strengthen the bond. For those working to build a relationship or struggling to hold one together, this book provides powerful new ways to overcome old behaviors and create a new connection that springs from a shared understanding of one another's needs.

A welcomed perspective.......2007-10-09
The book arrived without a hitch...all the way to Australia. The information, although not all new to me, was exactly what I needed right now. It's easy to read, not so easy to implement...but hey, who said life is an easy ride all the time.
Great read, makes you think about your relationship!.......2007-05-11
I ended up giving the first book to my best friend while I was back home for a weekend. I really connected with the way the authors linked the childhood and the present. It was an all around good read and good advice.
The Best Relationship Book Ever.......2006-12-24
I was drawn to this book after reading about it in Scott Martineau's book, "The Power Of You". He spoke so highly of the authors, I wanted to read what they said. I was not disappointed.
First, they cut through the myths we have all been taught that sound good but simply don't work. Their reality alternatives are perceptive and doable. Their perspective is optimistic. Their suggestions are totally workable.
Second, they point out that you probably got married for two distinct reasons that you may not be aware of. One is the opportunity for growth and the other is the opportunity to resolve issues from your past.
I have given copies to people who I care about and who are struggling with their partners. I believe this book offers the greatest hope for them to find real answers.
Learning to Understand Ourselves.......2006-11-10
The writers are good communicators. They teach us that we all have underlining reasons that we haven't identified for ourselves which we must learn to do so that we can communicate that it is that we really want from our mate. Once we resolve and identify what we really want then it is easy to share with our mate.
Helped turn our marriage around.......2005-12-08
My husband and I were on the brink. We didn't really have strong role models in terms of marriage, and after the honeymoon period, we struggled. Nagging, criticism, communication shut downs and feelings of rejection began creeping into the marriage. This book took an interesting approach: It helped us figure out our own personal issues, and then helped us work on the relationship. It took a lot of time and effort, but we put some of their ideas into practice, and now our relationship has never been better. I recommend this book with all my heart. I also wish you luck for whatever reason it is that brings you to search for this book.

If you can spell Mustang do not buy this book.......2007-05-25
This book is good for someone who knows little to nothing about mustangs.
For anyone who actually wants to modify one, do not waste your time. This book is very generic. SH rambles on touching lightly on various subjects but not going into sufficient detail on anything. I expected a list of the different years and models with all the stock specs at the least, but it is not here.
Whereas his book on building Modular Motors was a wealth of information, this one is very disappointing.
Book Description
Ten years have passed since the original edition of this book was published, but Alfa Romeo enthusiasts everywhere are more active today than ever in preserving, modifying and racing these excellent cars. Throughout this time, the author in true Alfista fashion, never stopped looking for and trying new techniques to increase the power, overall performance and reliability of Alfas and their engines. This book is the result of much research, and also first-hand experience gained through many Alfa rear wheel drive model projects, from the 105 series to the last of the 75 models. There is a lot of completely new information regarding TwinSpark Cylinder head mods, big-brake mods, LSD adjustment procedure, electrical system improvements, plus many flow-bench diagrams, dyno plots, and much more.

A gearheads bible for Alfa's little twin-cammer.......2007-09-23
Is the material dated...most of it probably, but so is the subject. There is very little available for those of us who have this love-hate passion with old cars, especially if our object of affection is one of the many lovely and sometimes obscure models or makes from Europe. The Alfa four cylinder twin-cam engines comes from a time when the owner of a car could, if they felt like it, tune or modify the car without having to remap a silicone chip (I've looked all over my Weber's and I have not been able to find a serial or USB interface for my laptop). Today's designs are marvels of efficiency and reliability but for many of us whom like to get grease under our fingernails working on pre "HAL" controlled jewels like the Alfa inline TC fours and sixes, this book conveys a trove of information on what will work in our quest to squeeze the most performance from our lovely Italian mistresses (imho).
Must Have for Alfa Dogs.......2007-02-16
This is a wealth of info for the cars in question. Informative, well-written, the voise of experience speaks. While you will not agree with all the conclusions drawn, this update takes years off your learning curve. The author is congenial without being smarmy, and offers a book that needed to be written. Don't modify your Alfa without it...
alfa romeo dohc engine high performance manual.......2007-01-10
Lots of practical information on buiding high performance Alfas including some not so well known info such as throttle plate angle on Weber DCOE carbs,( very useful) would have liked some more Twin SPark specific info...maybe in the next book, Jim? a great read for Alfa lunatics...
