Have the basics but ready for the next steps?.......2007-07-20
Starting my second show dog's career, after blundering my way through with my first one, Peter Green and Mario Migliorini gave me excellent tips and strategies to make the handler pay more attention to his/her job. I love the section on stacking - wonderful photos to show the sublties that beginners don't see. An excellent book for someone with the basic knowledge already down who wants to take their showing to the next level.
Not what I was Looking for.......2007-06-06
This book would be helpful for anyone beginning showing dogs. They really needn't know anything. If you already know what a show is, how to enter and have been in the ring before, you're probably not going to get much out of this. I have a few books on showing that far outwiegh this one. It's basic, simple and for complete novices only...It is written well, and is easy to understand. If this is to be your first book on dog showing, then it will provide you with enough info to get you started. I preferred, The Winning Edge: Show Ring Secrets (Howell Reference Books) and Tricks of the Trade: From Best Intentions to Best in Show, Revised Edition
Very well done!.......2007-02-21
Great book for the learning dog handler. Combine it with a book like "Eye For a Dog" and you are on your way to understanding America's second longest running sport (next to horse racing).
New Secrets of Successful Show Dog Handling by Peter Green.......2006-12-08
Wonderful read with plenty of good tips that I'm sure would benefit anyone wanting to improve their dog handling.

Very Informative.......2007-05-30
I purchased this book and two others prior to showing my 9 mo. old puppy at a four day show with a Specialty in his breed. He placed Second in puppy sweeps on one day of the show and Reserve Winners on another day. In my opinion, my mentor and this book gave me a greater understanding of what the judges look for, how the point system works, how to work with my puppy in segments, and how to handle my dog in the ring. Some breeders at the show said I did fine, my puppy did fine, and that we were a team in the ring.
It was a very exciting and satisfying experience and I look forward to learning more from this book in the future. I am a beginner and there is much to learn.
Great Beginners Guide.......2007-01-18
This book starts at A and goes to Z. I was very grateful when I stepped into the ring the last time and the Judge asked for a "Triangle"...the illustration from this book came to memory and we did just fine though I'd never seen the pattern in practice or at a show! I highly recommend this book and I will no doubt refer to it many times over the coming years. I plan to utilize it as I raise my next litter and look forward to seeing the results when used on a pup from the very beginning!
Raising a Champion: A Beginner's Guide to Showing Dogs.......2006-08-31
Thank you for an awesome beginners guide! Even with confirmation training lessons, this guide is invaluable.

Really great book for a novice, easy to understand.
Perfect book for the perfectionist in all of us!.......2005-09-16
I own three or four books on showing dogs and I have to say that this book is the most detailed book I've found on the "art" of the dog show. Major confidence booster because they don't leave out a single detail. There's nothing left to figure out, instead it is simply and concisely spelled out. For the novice (like myself) it's a live saver. I suspect that there are some valuable lessons for dog handlers of all levels.

Dog shows are phenomenally popular, immensely competitive, and often perplexing for beginners. Show Me offers easy-to-follow tips and words of wisdom for those new to this challenging sport. Author D. Caroline Coile is quick to point out that the average pet pooch (although lovely in your eyes) will not make it in professional competitions. Most show dogs are bred for this very purpose, and the book includes practical advice for selecting and raising your top dog. (Can you really handle that Great Dane?)
Coile divulges her immense knowledge of competition culture, from grooming tips and obedience training to the psychology of dealing with competition loss. Crisp color photographs and expertly drawn pencil sketches of that perfect show dog will capture the imagination of any would-be competitor.
Book Description
What are the physical qualities and special training methods that make a good dog a prize-winner? When is it better to hire a professional handler, and when should owners show the dog themselves? Here are answers to these and many more questions. Owner's will find advice on grooming, training, dress rehearsals, and understanding the points that judges are looking for. Many full-color photos.

An excellent gude for the first time handler!.......2007-06-05
If you have never shown a dog before and don't know what you are getting yourself into this is the book to buy! It even provides a supply list so you know what to bring! If you want to start showing your dog(s) and need to know what to do and how to do it this is one book you MUST buy!
Worth Your Consideration.......2007-03-30
This is probably not the best showing how to book out there but it certainally teaches you a lot without encouraging you to be a snob that cares about nothing but winning at any cost. It covers a lot of material and though it doesn't teach you EVERYTHING you need to know this book combined to going with some other people to a show made me feel confident enough to start showing my own dogs. I have never forgotten some of the things she said in this book. As I go through the dog showing life events can cause her words to ring in my head and bring me peace such as when I meet the occasional meanie "...but keep in mind the meanest people are often the ones with the least going for them." Ain't that the truth!
D. Caroline Coile is a good author. She writes good breeding articles for Dog World all the time and her book Pit Bulls for Dumies, I think, is the most breed-informative of all the "for Dummies" books on dog breeds. I have or have had Labrador Retrievers for Dummies, Golden Retrievers for Dummies, Rottweilers for Dummies, Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies, and Boxers for Dummies, all by other authors, and, blah, I felt like I was reading a general dog care book with just a tiny amount of breed-specific information you could find ANYWHERE in ANY BOOK. I feel like Coile gets more into explaining the essence of the breed in her book.
Wow! This little book packs a punch!.......2005-09-20
This book is an excellent start for beginners. It answered almost every question I had and is very easy to read. I would highly recommend this book.
The best book for starters.......2005-05-18
i started reading this book already knowing some about dog showing but this book is great it tells you the good things and the bad tells you how to find the best show dog for you i recommend this book to anyone wanting to start showing like myslef
The BEST Book I've Read Yet!.......2004-09-28
This is a fantastic book for the owner-handler competing against the professionals! It helps out the novice as well by explaining dog shows. However, I've been in dog shows since I was young and needed a book for the next level. This was perfect! There were so many hints, tips and techniques that I had never heard of. There were hints on training your dog, using your dog's best assets, handler techiniques etc. I couldn't put the book down! This book needs to be in every dog showers library.

good read, too much field trial garbage.......2007-08-21
this was a good book with a mix of training for hunting and field trials.... if your interested in just training for hunting and dont want extra garbage thrown in, go with game dog
A Must for the Labrador Retriever owner.......2007-04-16
This is one of the best books I have read about the labrador retriever. From start to finish this book is a good reference for the total labrador retriever experience. If you have a lab or or thinking about getting a lab, this is an excellent reference.
great book.......2007-01-11
A must read for anyone desiring a hunting companion and a friend for life. From the initial chapters, I felt I was having a conversation with a friend regarding how to properly train and care for a life long companion.
amazon rocks.......2006-12-01
I have only read the book and not implemented its techniques but I really enjoyed it. It was a great book and I think it will work very well. It was well written and even though I am a novice at this, it was easy to understand. Also, Amazon's customer service is awesome. I am not sure if they shipped me an empty package, it was messed up by postal workers, or stolen out of the box on my porch but when I received it my box was empty. I called amazon and without questions they immediately toldme they would send me another one on next day shipping. I was floored. Thats what makes amazon the best, not to mention the better prices. Hard to shop anywhere else on the net.
Exellent book for labs........2004-04-16
I got this book together with the 10 minute retriever. I must say that both are great books. I been training my lab for 3 months now and I am very suurprised how the training is comming. I have never trained a gun dog in my life and these two books have made it so easy that you would not belive it. You just have to read them, do as they say and the dog will do the rest.
Do not hesitate on these two books. If you are just going to buy one of these two go with The working retriever if you want to even go to trials with your dog. If you want an exellent never failing hunt dog, go with the 10 minute retriever.

Border Collie owners working stock - don't miss this one!.......2001-06-08
If you own and work (or plan to work) stock dogs then you'll want to own this book. I borrowed this book many years ago and now that I am getting back into working stockdogs I just ordered it for myself! The book takes you through choosing and raising a puppy, step-by-step training from start to finish, and trialing. The book is mostly geared towards Border Collies working sheep but most of the same techniques can be used with other breeds. If you have another breed working cattle may want to look into purchasing Scott Lithgow's "Training and Working Dogs for Quiet Confident Control of Stock".
A must read for the person who wants to learn to trial.......1999-11-20
Glyn Jones,a top Border Collie handler gives his insights about working as a team with your Border collie on the trial field. He also explains how to train your dog and how to become a team. This book goes into detail from choosing your dog, training you dog in all the stages to trialing. A top book with lots of pictures, diagrams and great explanations.
Book Description
A hilarious and hip novel for every girl who’s been desperate to find a way into her dream-man’s heart–and discovered that love is more finicky than a Chihuahua in a Prada handbag.
Yesterday, Liv Elliot had it all: a great flat in London’s Notting Hill, an actual career (okay, as an accountant), and a fiancé with whom she was only weeks away from wedded bliss. Every girl’s dream, right? But then Tim declared that the wedding was off–leaving Liv shell-shocked. Luckily, she’s got her best friend’s fab Australian beach house in which to recuperate.
The restorative powers of the Sydney sun, sand, and sea soon have Liv feeling wonderfully careless, wanton, and reckless. Things really couldn’t get any more anti-accountant when she runs into old flame Ben Parker. It’s been years since they fooled around on their summer vacation, but Liv never forgot that genetically-blessed face. Raring to help her land beautiful Ben, Liv’s friends teach her the Rules of Dog Handling: Treat a man like a dog, and he’ll be eating out of your hand. But surely this can’t actually work? Liv is about to find out that it can–but she’s hardly prepared for the unexpected results.

Didn't hold my attention...........2007-09-06
I need to keep reminding myself that Clare Naylor isn't one of my favorite authors. I enjoy her, but she's not in my top ten. This book has a lot to be desired the only thing I thought it had going for it was the fast that it was set in Australia. It's basically about a girl who was dumped by the man she thought she was going to marry, so she follows her best friend who is a professional "girlfriend" down under. On one of her first days droning around she meets a drag queen who takes her under his wing and coaches her on the idea of treating men like dogs. In the mean time, the new crowd in Australia that she is inducted to by default through her friend happens to be the most popular in the country with connections to boot. This includes her long lost first love who happens to be dating the most well known and beautiful socialite. It's all kind of a circus with the crazy roommate she happens to have and the man of her dreams just happening to be right there after all these years. You can imagine how it ends.....
Cake Frosting.......2007-08-21
While I picked this paperback up at a garage sale for a quarter, I felt like I got my money's worth with this enjoyable light reading. The romance with accountant Liv and the breaking of her engagement to Tim was related with a bit of agony as the character's heart breaks. The book started off a bit slow for me. Naylor's style is witty banter that rattles on at a mile a minute. But once I got into her rhythm of writing, the story started to jump alive. Liv's trip to Sydney, Australia to live with best friend Alex Burton, a drop dead gorgeous woman who lives off the kindness of admiring men, begins the adventure. Alex may not charge, but she does accept perks like a free beach bungalow. As Liv doesn't know anyone there except the depressed gay neighbor Laura, she runs into two gay men Dave and James who have a woman's underwear stall called Greta's Grundies. This story is such escapist fantasy, that one can't fault the story for not being realistic any more than you could fault a Harry Potter book for having magic. It's what Naylor does. So while it may seem improbable that a church with rats and cobwebs can be transformed into a very chic site for a business launch party for a fashion company within a few short hours, you have to go with the flow on this book. The flow is romance. Who will wind up with whom. It's what Naylor sets us up to want to know. Ultimately, the story with Ben Parker (wasn't that also the name of the uncle from Spiderman?) may seem not quite likely, but true love is the name of the game. Alex and motherhood may have been the furthest thing from our minds when the book started, but we learn that wealthy husbands are best when you're also in love with them. The dog handling metaphor was intriguing as it seemed to explain the story and then did not fit the characters. I thought the cover art on the book was attractive. To not like this book is like being against frosting on cakes. It's sweet, cut and tastes good going down. Enjoy!
Witty characters that will make you laugh out loud!.......2007-07-27
An avid reader who only recently discovered the chick-lit genre, I devoured this book in a mere few hours only to wish I had taken my time so I could relish the characters and their dialogue for a while longer. If you're looking for a good story that you won't leave you feeling worn out or depressed, then pick up this book and you won't regret it.
Revenge.......2007-01-02
Liv Elliot had been engaged to marry boyfriend, Tim, after going out with him for 5 years, but was beginning to have second thoughts about marrying him. When Tim suddenly tells her, just weeks before their wedding, that he too was having doubts, she's furious that he was the one to speak first and got all huffy at being dumped. She and her girlfriend, Alex, take themselves off to Sydney, Australia where Alex has a place by the beach to stay in, courtesy of the boyfriend who is really Alex's sugar daddy. Liv meets a couple of gay men who become her close friends and encourage her to join in their luxury underwear making venture, but who also direct her in her search to find and keep a boyfriend. It's a very light piece of fluff but an entertaining read to fill in a spare moment.
Fun but average.......2006-01-25
This is a story about recovery after a bad breakup, reinventing of self and reigniting an old flame. It was also about knowing how to handle men (or dogs, same thing!) in order to keep them coming back for more. This was a fun read, although I do have to say that there wasn't really anything special about it. However, it was enjoyable and effortless to read.

Great Book!.......2005-12-29
This is a wonderful guide for anyone seeking skills on dog handling and showing. It offers step by step instructions and debunks some of the myths. My favorite part was the touching stories about how dogs facilitate healing and transform the human spirit.
This is an excellent book!.......2005-11-02
Steve SeRine has written an inspiring and intuitive guide for anyone interested in becoming a better handler. I've attended several of his handling seminars. This book is a wonderful reference to the novice as well as the advanced handler. I highly recommend this as a fund raising item for national raffles as it is truly a wonderful book that applies to every individual regardless of the dog breed they own.
