5 out of 5 stars The best book I've found!.......2007-01-17

This book is so great! The author does a good job balancing helpful information and dealing with complex emotions. There are lots of great activities, useful links & resources, in-bed exercises/stretches. It's amazing how much is contained in this little book! I have a feeling I will be referring to it often during my pregnancy. If you are also on bedrest with complications, hang in there & God bless!

5 out of 5 stars Well Written and FULL of Invaluable Information!!!.......2006-08-14

I like that the author talks about the spiritual challenges bedrest brings into a families life without focusing on a particular religion - very uplifting. No other bedrest book does this. I have struggled with blaming myself and thinking I am being punished because of my problem pregnancy. It's nice to know these feeling are normal and that I don't have to blame myself for something I have no control over. I feel better about myself as a person. Also, the questions for your doctor section covers everything!!! Great Book!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Bedrest Exercise Chapter is Wonderful.......2006-07-21

After I received this book, I took it to my OB/GYN to review the bedrest exercises. He thought the exercises would be a great idea to help with my muscle stiffness and pain. He was right! Not only do I feel better physically, I think the exercises are helping emotionally too. It's nice to feel like I have a little control over my body again. Great book - after reading my book, I bought one for my OB/GYN to put in his office.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift.......2006-07-07

I bought this book that was recommended to me for a friend who was placed on bedrest. She was so grateful for the information it provided especially the relaxation techniques. I would recommend buying this book for any friend that you know who will have to deal with the disappointment of having to be placed on pregnancy bedrest.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for a Mom with other children while on bedrest.......2006-07-02

I was very concerned when I was put on bedrest because I have a two year old and a six year old. The chapter in this book on caring for other children while on bedrest is EXCELLENT!! There is tons of information on how to entertain a toddler and stay in bed at the same time. Also, I am very grateful to have the stories and suggestions which helped me explain bedrest to my kids - each explanation being age appropriate for each child. I do not want my kids to worry about me while on bedrest and this book has helped me to put their minds at ease.

Book Description

In a charming and witty novel in the tradition of Allison Pearson and Sophie Kinsella, Sarah Bilston tells the story of a busy career woman who finds her pregnancy a breeze -- until she's ordered off her feet for complete and total bed rest.

Quinn "Q" Boothroyd is a young British lawyer married to an American and living in New York City. She's checked off most of the boxes on her "Modern Woman's List of Things to Do Before Hitting 30," and her busy working life has been relatively painless. But when her doctor tells her she must spend the last three months of her pregnancy lying in bed, Q is thrown into a tailspin. Initially bored and frustrated, Q soon fills her days by trying to reconnect with her workaholic husband, provide legal advice for her sweet Greek neighbor, forge new emotional bonds with her mother and sisters, and figure out who will keep her stocked up in cookies and sandwiches.

Q experiences adventures on the couch she never would have encountered in the law firm and learns a lot about herself and what she wants out of life -- above all, about the little one growing inside her.

3 out of 5 stars Humorous story........2007-07-14

Quinn "Q" Boothroyd is a young British lawyer married to an American. She works at the law firm of Schuster and Marks, in New York City. Her fast-paced life comes to a screeching halt after her obstetrician appointment. Dr. Weinberg is very concerned because Q's body is not producing enough amniotic fluid for the baby to develop properly. Q's fluid level has to rise or the baby will be delivered almost three months too early. The answer is strict bed rest. Q may not walk or lift anything. She may shower once a day, sit up for dinner, and go to her OB appointments. That is it! Nothing else!

Tom, her husband, goes back to his own hectic work zone quickly. Q is bored within eight hours. She can see no way to spend three months in a reclined position without going insane. Q begins writing in a journal to kill time. But soon she needs more. She begins trying to live through others. As she gives legal advice to her neighbor, tries to feel happiness for Brianna's (a friend) love life, becomes closer to mother and sisters, and tries to reconnect with her husband, Q finds her outlook on life changing. The time Q spends in bed rest teaches her a lot about herself, life in general, and most importantly, about the baby growing within her.

*** This is a humorous tale told in a first-person view point. If you have ever been pregnant, whether you've had a career at the time or not, you will easily empathize. ***

I am a L&D nurse and deal with women with these issues everyday. I reed this book and found very funny. Not all facts true of course, but good read for any mom or someone about to be a mom.

3 out of 5 stars Ok book..........2007-03-06

Not the greatest book ever but definetly a cute one. Anyone who has had problems with pregnancy can relate to this character!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not Really Worth the Time.......2006-11-11

As someone who was on bed rest for the last trimester of my pregnancy I can relate to the character in that respect. However, the story is so-so. There are much better reads out there.

3 out of 5 stars Perhaps it would have been more enjoyable were I NOT on bedrest.......2006-08-13

This was quite predictable, and simple in plot. It was an easy read, and had some humorous moments.
Perhaps I am not at my most appreciative, since I am just halfway though a four month bedrest myself right now, and found some of the parts of the story ridiculous.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to help Young Children Adjust to a Horizontal Mommy.......2007-07-28

I found this to be a wonderful book for toddlers faced with the trauma of having a parent on bed rest (whether it's due to pregnancy, an illness or accident). I ordered it on Amazon when I was up all night with insomnia from worry about my 2-year old daughter's difficult time dealing with my long-term (26 week) complete pregnancy bed rest. The day we received it, she asked me to read it to her five times. Our 2 year old related to the tender way the book explains--in a toddler's voice--how a child feels when her Mom is ordered to stay in bed. I couldn't agree more with the quote on the back of the book, "This delightful and poignant book fills a gap in children's literature....Beautiful illustrations and lifting verse will make this a favorite among children and give parents ideas for creative and enjoyable activities to be shared between Mother and Child. Mothers and children in this [bed rest] situation will praise and thank Annette Rivlin-Gutman for addressing their need so eloquently."

5 out of 5 stars A small, simple softcover picturebook .......2007-04-14

Mommy Has To Stay In Bed is a small, simple softcover picturebook written by a mother who personally experienced the dilemma of having to explain being on bed rest during her pregnancy to her then 1 1/2 year old daughter. The simple rhyme and the warm color illustrations complement one another perfectly in this superb book for helping little ones understand a difficult time in a parent's life. "Sometimes I get so angry. / I just want to shout, / 'I don't like having Mom in bed / day in and day out.' // Mommy tells me to scream, / hit a pillow, have a cry. / If I'm angry, she understands / and accepts the reasons why."

5 out of 5 stars Great resource.......2007-02-20

If you have a parent who is bed ridden the is a must have book if there are young children in the home. There are very few resources out there to help tell a child about a bed-ridden mommy. This book is a great help.

5 out of 5 stars a must for every child's bookshelf.......2007-02-17

If you've ever wondered how to deal with a child who needs to understand the reality of an at home -in- bed mom or dad, then consider this a must read for that child along with the parent who cares enough to help that child
grow and understand the reality of the situation. I know it helped my daughter and myself when we needed it most.
Simple and to the point, a great book with a great message!! Kudos to the educator who knows how to communicate with the chilld. Please write more!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Parent facing a Longterm Illness.......2007-02-05

A wonderful children's book!
Beautifully illustrated, lovingly told, Mommy Has to Stay in Bed offers comfort to a child facing the issue of a parent confined to bed rest.
Through colorful images, and in terms a young child can understand, this book will help a child cope with a parent's illness. Sensitively written from the viewpoint of the child, I found the book to be full of terrific ideas to help the young reader bond with their parent during a difficult time.
Mommy Has to Stay in Bed is a thoughtful gift for any mother facing a long illness or recuperation. I loved this book and would highly recommend!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2003-10-09

This book is so helpful, easy to read and inspiring! Wish it was longer. A must read for those on bed rest for any duration.

3 out of 5 stars Short, brief, but has some good ideas.......2003-09-30

This is good, and helpful, it's just short. I was on the bedrest much longer than this author, and her suggestions weren't as helpful as I hoped they would be. I will be buying the other bedrest books for more suggestions.

3 out of 5 stars A good book, but comes up short.......2003-08-12

I have read every bed rest book I could find. This is not the best. The author has attempted to write a comprehensive book, and does a good job, just not great. There are better. It's very short, and after reading it, which took a couple of hours at most, I felt like I didn't have enough information. I wish the author would have had more experience with extended hospital bed rest. That would have been beneficial.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable - Absolutely Fantastic!.......2003-03-01

This is a *wonderful* book for any pregnant mother who is dealing with bed rest! The author is a veteran of two complicated pregnancies involving extended bed rest and she has put together an amazing amount of information and resources in this book. I wish I'd had this book for my first two pregnancies and am SO GLAD to have it for my third!

The author includes a huge amount of information and practical suggestions for coping with bed rest. She gives great suggestions on how to get the help a bed rest mom will need and where to find the resources that might be available to help these mothers and their families. She also discusses in great detail both hospital bed rest and bed rest in the home.

There is also a fantastic section on coping with bed rest when one already has other children [and how to help the children cope!], as well as a great section on fathers.

I would recommend this book to any mother facing bed rest in her pregnancy - whether this is her first pregnancy or her fifth! This book is just overflowing with great information and is very encouraging and helpful. It is also a very easy and enjoyable book to read. It is very well written and worth every cent!

Your search for a "Bedrest Bible" is over! The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book is chock-full of information, advice, resources, and personal stories from women who endured days, weeks, or months in bed. I wish Ms. Tracy had written it in time for my own bedrest sentences!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......1999-06-10

I was told that I was going to be on bedrest for four months, and this was the first book I bought. The author obviously has more money than I do, because I cannot afford to have a massage twice a week, or buy a Select Comfort bed or a new laptop computer...I'm out of work! I needed practical advice, and this book didn't offer it. Instead, it offered me ideas for things I wish I could afford.

1 out of 5 stars Not enough helpful information.......1999-04-21

This book was neither helpful, nor realistic. As on OB nurse, I feel that this book also has some dangerous information for pregnant women, such as advice about exercise and sex. There is not enough support in the author's strangely optimistic perspective of her "bedrest journey." Most women find bedrest quite a challenge. These women need support from someone who has endured the struggles and offers helpful assistance.

1 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as I anticipated.......1999-04-10

As a pregnant bedrester, I was diappointed with this book. The book is intended to help all people on bedrest, rather than just pregnant women. The author offers some helpful suggestions, but is not very realistic. Suggesting that women hire housekeepers, gardeners, and massage therapists is NOT practical or realistic for women who have to quit working, and then adjust their incomes accordingly. I just puchased a book from A Place to Remember, entitled "Days in Waiting: A Guide to Surviving Pregnancy Bedrest" by Mary Ann McCann. I found it very practical and helpful.

2 out of 5 stars The author's overly positive approach alienates the reader........1999-04-07

I anticipated reading this book as I approached week four of eight weeks of bed rest. There are some good suggestions, ideas and information provided here. I found myself put off by the first chapter, however, entitled "Finding Inspiration." In it, the author describes how she began to "treasure" her time on bed rest and speaks at length about how restorative and peaceful the experience was for her. It bothered me to read that at the beginning of the book. More empathy and supportiveness before launching into the "gratitude" mode would have suited me better.

I also feel that many of her suggestions assume the reader is of a certain financial status. Many patients on bedrest cannot afford or do not own a remote control TV, cordless phone, laptop computer, or some of the other "necessities" Peterson outlines. Greater sensitivity to a wide range of circumstances is needed.

    Book Description

This study covers the latent demand outlook for hospital back rests, bassinets, cases, chart racks, and other tables excluding hospital beds, operating room furniture, and patient room furniture across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as “regions”). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of “economic population”, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this “economic” definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city’s marketing and distribution value vis-à-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for hospital back rests, bassinets, cases, chart racks, and other tables excluding hospital beds, operating room furniture, and patient room furniture. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for hospital back rests, bassinets, cases, chart racks, and other tables excluding hospital beds, operating room furniture, and patient room furniture. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study covers the world outlook for hospital back rests, bassinets, cases, chart racks, and other tables excluding hospital beds, operating room furniture, and patient room furniture across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales.
