This Boynton compilation is good but not as good as Philadelphia Chickens. My 5-year-old son has asked for this one repeatedly and we all know who should be the true reviewer here. It is, however, better than Dog Train which we have only listened to once.

Great fun! Cute songs for the whole family. Kids like them because they're silly. Adults have fun with them, too, but the music is "real music", not kiddy stuff. Our two girls and their friends have fun making up dances to go with the songs - creative play at its finest!!

We bought this CD for our 7-year-old son (he already has "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Dog Train" by the same artist), but "Rhinoceros Tap" just doesn't have the charisma as the other ones by Sandra Boynton. The tunes just aren't catchy. Some of them remind me of old jazz/blues music, which I enjoy and appreciate, but the melodies are more on the somber side and it's hard to work in words that are suitable for children. As a result, my son loses interest after about the third or fourth number. The other CDs by Boynton are wonderful and we've just about worn them out, but somehow "Rhinoceros Tap" doesn't quite make the cut.

We received this CD for a gift a year ago and my kids(4 1/2 and 13mo) and I still BOTH enjoy hearing it! Fun, catchy tunes, with a bit of humor for adults, and silliness for kids.

Despite some unevenness , this album and its accompanying book are a drive-time hit in our household - amazing considering my kids are 10 and 11 - oh, and a baby, who probably doesn't get all the subtleties, but enjoys the music nonetheless.
Our favourites include:

~O, Lonely Peas... which my daughter and I enjoy belting out together!
Others are not as popular, and we sometimes find ourselves fast forwarding through them... such as:
~Rhinoceros tap (particularly the instrumental version)
~Dinosaur round
We are mixed on songs like Bad Babies and Turkey Love Song - I like them, but the kids don't quite "get" the jazzy vocals, I think.
Our "greatest hit" from this album has got to be So Long Doggies, which is just the cleverest, funniest, well-sung thing I have heard for children in all my years of being a parent. Little kids won't catch all the references, but my big kids LOVE them! ("BONE voyage...")
Despite these unevennesses, this album makes a great change from all the commercialized kiddie schlock out there.
If you want something you can all sing along to and not have to worry about what kinds of influences your kids are being exposed to, grab this delightfully innocent album and be prepared to sing your heart out!

I love this book! My son is 20 months and loves this book the rhythm of the words, the numbers, the clapping the sounds of the instruments. What would be excellent if there was an auditory accompaniment to the book. A taping of someone reading the book who can demonstrate the sounds or even better a taping that included musical instruments playing.
I know a lot of people would LOVE to hear it as well and it would be an excellent teaching tool. Please forward this to the appropriate individuals and if possible keep me updated on the release date of the cd. Thank YOU for writing such an awesome, entertaining and needed book!

This is a great book-the text jives off the page and the illustrations thimp dumple thump right along. What a great way to teach kids about jazz legends!

A great read aloud for kids!.......2007-03-07
I am an elementary school media specialist for grades 1 - 5. I read this book to my first and second graders. By the third jazz man they were chanting along with me. By the fifth man we were all singing along with the familiar song tune. They loved the scat phrases and repeated them over and over. What a bonus that these men are actual jazz legends. I highly recommend this book for a great musical read.

I'm 3 and my Grandmother Helene reads this book to me. She said that my Doctor Beth gave it to me and my sister Scarlett and the author signed it. That made me smile.
I really like this book. My grandmother sings me it and i like music and instruments and can name the saxophone and trumpet and drums.I like the pictures of the conga drums.

Note: Since writing the review below, I've discovered that "This Jazz Man" has received three (and counting) prestigious honors in the last month or so: A Nick Jr. Book of the Year for Children, one of the N.Y. Public Libraries Top 100 books to Read to Kids, and one of a very few named by National Public Radio as a best children's book of the year!
February 2007 Update: This Jazz Man is on the cover of the February "Crickets" magazine! In addition, it was shortlisted as a top book by the Cooperative Children's Book Center, and is being used as a teaching tool for a Smithsonian Museum (yes, that Smithsonian!) exhibit.
If you've bought this book, you and I share a certain nose for kids' books; if you haven't, you'll discover a book that's snappy and swinging, fun and informative. My original review follows.
"Doodly-doodly-Doot-doot! Toot-Toot!"
That's Karen Ehrhardt's delightful take on a Dizzy Gillespie trumpet line, and like the rest of this sparkling first book, every note rings joyous and true. In a somewhat daring move, Ms. Ehrhardt airs out the musty English poem, "This Old Man," with jazz-infused lyrics, and distills the essence of nine jazz giants: Louis Armstrong, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Chano Pozo, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charles Mingus.
The improvisations in "This Jazz Man" are authentic and fun--the text is made for reading out loud! Listen to this evocation of Charlie Parker, for example:
This jazz man, he plays five,
He plays bebop, he plays jive,
With a Deedle-di-bop! Bebop!
Give the man a hand,
This jazz man blows with the band.
Within the 5-line format of the original song, the author conveys the sound and spirit of these artists, while keeping the tone light and understandable for her young, perhaps jazz-naive audience (about 3 to 7 years-old). Along with each Jazz Man's stanza are the sounds and rhythms of his performance -- depicted in text incorporated with each illustration. When drummer Art Blakey "plays solos with his sticks" and "beats with the band," the percussive sounds "Chikka-chee! Chikka-chee! Bubbuda-bubbuda-bubbuda-BOMP!" pulse over his vibrating cymbals. Following the `performance,' older readers (and adults) can learn more about Blakey -- his innovation of the "press roll" and his role in nurturing new talent -- in the book's afterward. Riffing on the customary introductions of band members at jazz gigs ("Playing 4, form Washington, D.C... Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington"), the book briefly spotlights the life of each Jazz Man.
Illustrator R. G. Roth complements Ehrhardt's narrative pictures with multi-media illustrations that are playfully retro yet fresh and child-friendly. Airy compositions help children see the relaxed, expansive pose of the smiling Louis Armstrong, the verve and rhythmic creativity of "Chano" Pozo (how many times have you seen him in a jazz book for kids?), the playful attack of Fats Waller, and the stature and majesty of Charles Mingus. Roth displays a repertoire of textures and soft, engaging colors, and makes subtle references to Birdland, the Newport Jazz Festival, and other venues along the edges of book's `stage. For the small fry, a cute and playfully elusive mouse plays hide and seek throughout the book. "This Jazz Man" has an exhilarating finale -- after each man plays (1 through 9), all of the jazz icons appear on stage together:

"This Jazz Man" gets it right, rhymes it tight, and entertains without misrepresenting. (To put this achievement in context, too many kids' "jazz" books really focus on the blues--usually the rural blues, seen through an awkward sentimentalism--or solely on dance. Sometimes they confuse eras, portraying any jazz singer as a combination of Bessie Smith, post-WWII hep cats, and 1950's beats, with a dash of oddly misplaced 1970's styles.)
"This Jazz Man" is a natural for school or library audiences, rambunctious group singing, the first efforts of beginning readers, or as a bedtime treat for toddlers. One doesn't need to know one lick about jazz to enjoy the musicality of the rhymes and the understated but compelling jazz portraits: They stand on their own. In addition, teachers can easily adapt "This Jazz Man" to language units, numbers and counting, music appreciation, art, solo and group singing. Older students may delve further into the lives and times of the musicians through Ehrhardt's rich yet compact biographical sketches in the afterward. (Offhand, I can't think of any book--for kids or adults--that so succinctly and eloquently describes each musician's significance.) For readers who'd like to sample the actual music, Ehrhardt recommends recorded works for each Jazz Man: a couple tracks for each musician, and even two feature films (available on video) that display Bojangles' tapping talents. (Perhaps in future editions of this book, the publishers could include a companion CD/DVD.)

This book is a must read for anyone leading people. It's a great resource for understanding how people think, work and produce more effiently. The author keeps the book very interesting by the number of examples provided. The scientific information is excellent. Not too heavy but enough to let you understand the reasons behind the information.
I wish the book provided at least a way for readers to take the test without the additional charge of taking the test individually.

Its great on theory, its demonstrate we as individual are a complex being and our profile is seasonal. The main reason I bought the book is to find out about my profile and disappointed not finding any starter or basic self help tool kit in the book other than visiting the book website and an additional payment of $100 is needed before result can be delivered to me.

I found this book very interesting. It is about what the author describes as the 4 thinking attributes (Social, Conceptual, Analytical and Structural) and 3 behavioral attributes (Expressiveness, Assertivess and Flexibility), how to identify attributes in people and yourself, how you can interact with others based on others attributes, how to make better decisions and how to create and work in great teams (among other things).
One of the cool things is that Dr. Browning eats her own dog food in that she applies what she is preaching in the way she wrote the book. For the analytical, there are explanations of brain activity and the science behind her findings. For the social, throughout the book, she explains how emergenetics can be beneficial to personal relationships. For the conceptual, there are colorful pictures of the different attributes that give readers the big picture and a quick glimpse of what emergenetics is about.
Another thing that I liked about the book was that I learned a good amount of information about the brain and how it works that I did not know before. The quotes sprinkled throughout the book were also interesting and timely.
This is another book to add to my aspiring WE (Whole Emergenetics) organizations' libraries. :)

Despite its clumsy name, Geil Browining's Emergenetics, offers practical and pragmatic advice on how to assess one's thinking and behavioral preferences on seven useful dimensions. Analytical, Structural, Conceptual and Social cover the thinking preferences and Expressiveness, Assertiveness and Flexibility cover the behavioral preferences. Emergenetics is the practice of developing thinking and behavior profiles on hundreds of thousands of individuals, analyzing these profiles for general understanding of individuals and groups and applying them to the improvement of personal and team effectiveness. Although the book doesn't discuss how profiles are generated, there is enough material to provide useful guidance to the reader in identifying and assessing these preferences in yourself and others.

After much research and consultation with professional guitar and violin makers, I have concluded that the jury is still out on the benefits of tap tuning for guitar making. One issue is that, unlike the violin world (where there is an acknoweldged standard and good physics for excellent tone) no such standard exists in the guitar world. Indeed, different guitars are supposed to sound different and excellent tone is highly subjective. Some builders I know use tap tuning or other complex methods to try for tonal perfection, others simply tap the plates and listen for a "good" tone. I am not convinced the hair-raising complexity and expensive equipment needed to use Siminoff's method are worth while. Besides, whatever resonant frequencies the components have seperately change completely once the guitar is glued together.
World class guitarist Ed Gerhard made a CD (House of Guitars) on which he used a bunch of junky guitars bought at pawn shops and discount outlets. He didn't even change the strings. Yet the sounds are gorgeous. I think this proves that the skill of the perfomer (given a bascially sound guitar) totally overwhelms whatever contributions high tech plate tuning methods make.
Must Have for Luthiers.......2007-08-24
Another great book for luthiers by Mr. Siminoff. It's a bit techy, but if you want to build great guitars (or any other acoustic stringed instrument), this is the stuff you need to go to the next level. The book will dispel the idea that tap tuning is a "black art" that only the gifted can practice, and put it squarely in the realm of possibility.

The "magic" explained........2007-01-16
This tutorial is a great resource for anyone who has ever had less than optimal results building a musical instrument. The "magic" of getting the best sound possible out of an instrument is explained in simple, easy to follow (and easy to repeat) steps. I wish I'd had this information many years ago. Even if you're not a builder, this book explains many things about how instruments "work". I would recommend this volume to anyone interested in understanding how the various parts of an instrument work together, to produce what we hear. This book will undoubtedly have a very positive impact on many instruments over the coming years. Well done Mr. Siminoff!

Picture yourself finding some old schematics for and ancient transistor radio. You open it to find those wierd old pictures of wires and transistors with meaningless letters on them like A or Y, then you read the text and the meaningless words flow in and out. You say to yourself, this looks like something I will never need in my life. If this sounds like a ball of fun to you, then buy this book and party up! If not then pass this one up. In fact, run screaming. This book will not show you what modern composers use to make their music. It will not show you why Milhaud, Honegger, Stravinsky, and others sound so great. It does not show you any craft of musical composition.
Not a course for freshman and sophomore music theory, but an important document by an important composer.......2005-11-15
This is a very interesting document by an important composer of the twentieth century. It provides his views on an approach to music that goes beyond the traditional theory of music through the common practice period. He goes into some theories on intervals, acoustics, and much more. This is NOT a book that will give you a grounding in the kind of music theory (actually music grammar education) that is given to freshman and sophomores at music schools.
As some of my fellow theory students noted, this is a great method to learn to compose like Hindemith, but who wants to do that anymore? Well, we want to learn more about him and his music, and this remains one of his principle statement of his musical approach. This is not for beginners and will likely be opaque to the general reader.
most useful if you're a tonal/expanded tonal composer........2003-09-13
Hindemith lays out his theoretical understanding of how music works and attempts to give musicians a basic starting point for composition that isn't limited to traditional tonal music (i.e. pre-Wagner and Debussy). His series 1 and 2 are contested to this day but they don't form the heart of the book, which is a broader, philosophical exposition of how composer's should think about music and approach it on a day-to-day basis. He argues that all music is tonal but it doesn't have to be major or minor.
I still don't buy the chord-reckoning method and Hindemith never reconciled himself the fact that his method can include jazz and pop--but this book is still one of the best books about composition I've read. Hindemith is probably the biggest exponent of the neo-classical school besides Stravinsky (others are Prokofiev and, to some degree, Bartok). This book goes a long way to explaining that perspective. Even if you play rock music you can still get a lot out of this book. Although he put down most of it Hindemith did like some jazz (Ellington and Andrew Hill, who studied with him some).
For a less technical exposition of Hindemith's ideas you may want to check out A Composer's World, which covers a lot of the same stuff.

This is an excellent book. It is a MUST-READ for any serious composer...however, it reflects a rather narrow-minded viewpoint. In order to get the true meaning out of this book, one needs to take all the theoretical knowledge and apply it in a more open-minded manner. For many though, this book will provide a very different, and useful way of looking at music and harmony.

I bought this book,but wasn't sure if I was doing the tapping right,so I bought the vhs video as well,and it made a big difference.There were things in the video,even Gary Craig didn't have in any of his.I did buy most of his as well.If you want to treat yourself and a few others,get the book and their video,which would be great together.If you want to professionally treat others,you'll have to buy Gary Craig's dvd's as well,because the more you know the better.The sequence is the same for most problems,but it's good to have lots of info.If you're interested in healing others and yourself,you should also look into Reiki which I have also.You can buy a dvd on here by Steve Murray,so you can get a level one attunement.Gotta love Reiki,it's good for you too.

I own several books and CDs on the subject of EFT but found that the instructions in this book are the easiest to understand and follow. As a learner, I was most interested in what would help me to become competent in the technique. The instructions, examples and style are simple and straight forward. Although I am a health care professional, this text and the CDs are presented so that a lay person can easily use them. I would recommend the book and the CDs for anyone who desires to actually use the technique.

I am thrilled with the authors' incorporation of spiritual aspects with EFT. Many of my clients have had great breakthroughs using the Mountrose soul-based methods - as have I. Perhaps the gentleman who was not pleased with this book missed what the rest of us found - a refreshing approach that's not afraid to make the soul connection. For those who are eager to delve deeper, I heartily recommend this book as well as their new book, The Heart and Soul of EFT.

I am a huge fan of EFT and am always eager to learn more, but this book was a complete zero for me. I haven't been this disappointed in a book from amazon.com in a long time. The authors are more concerned with self-promotion than helping people, which gets in the way of their communication. The content is vague, diffused, and very limited. I would recommend instead Gary Craig's free manual, or Energy Tapping by Fred Gallo.
It Changed My Life.......2004-01-13
The books, audio tapes, and video tapes by Jane and Phillip Mountrose have been instrumental in changing my life. They have provided the bases for spiritual and personal changes that have brought me to re-evaluate my lifestyle, and the things I want to accomplish in this life. They are well written, easy to understand, and contain simple exercises to help make the information useful and easy to apply.
I have read many self-help books over the years, and in most cases they have had very helpful information, but have been difficult to implement, or have failed to inspired me enough to make a change. This is the first time I have been able to apply the information and techniques discussed, and made the necessary changes to my personal life. As a result, I have shared these techniques with friends and collegues with amazing results.
I will be eternally grateful to Jane and Phillip Mountrose for their pure and insightful help.

Taylor's erudition and vast experience in unpacking dream landscapes is without question. By my reckoning Taylor stands alongside of Freud and other seminal thinkers in the analytical psychological tradition for providing a map to journey on the serpentine and difficult quest to interpret dreams. If depth psychology holds your interest, this book is a good place to begin. And Taylor a guide worth reading. As the author notes, "dreams come at the service of health and wholeness." If this is your aim, you will find a wise guide to access the depths and richness found in the language of Dreams.

Jeremy Taylor's use of personal experiences to illustrate his points is very effective and adds interest to the book. The clear outline of his beliefs is expressed very well and reiterated throughout.

Having read the book with care, and having experienced the author live, I can and will testify that, for the group in which I participated, the processs works, and the book fairly represents the process. All dreams that can be remembered ultimately do seem "to come in the service of health and wholeness." Taylor-style Dreamwork combines a form of intimacy with respectful distance, because only by looking deep within "as if it were my dream" can a group member have anything to say about someone else's dream. So, each dream belongs to each member of the group -- in individual versions. This process is illustrated, with huge quantities of theoretical material tantalizingly presented. Quoting Taylor again, "I am a fanatic because I am convinced from 30 years experience. Don't take my word for it. I am the circus barker outside the tent, touting the wonders of 'Jo-Jo the Dog Faced Boy.' Come inside the tent and see for yourself." I agree. The book conveys more of the flavor of the live experience than one would think possible.

Initially I didn't care for the way Trevor Scott speaks. It is a bit odd and I wondered if I could get past it. I was able to get past it however and after the first week I saw some pretty big changes taking place in my life. I don't think this CD will solve all of your problems but I do think it is a good place to start.

Madriani finds himself in a deadly legal quagmire-with a client who is unwilling to cooperate and prosecutors who stonewall his every question about the victim's shadowy business and his client's past. Justice, and the unvarnished truth, has never been so elusive-or so dangerous.

In the eminently readable page-turner "Double Tap", Martini's many strengths shine; unfortunately, the book also has a few flaws. Interestingly, I was not bothered by the dialogue, noted elsewhere as a weakness, although I must agree that the overdescriptions were occasionally distracting. Rather, my major objection is the lack of originality of the premise to this book.
More specifically, Martini employs the overused theme of a conspiracy to deprive citizens of their privacy in the name of national security. He also spices it up with the figure of a former general cast as the untouchable villain, which I found a little too convenient and quite unrealistic. The combination of the two, while expedient in a day and age when the public is only too sensitive to these themes, is also woefully lacking in originality, certainly enough to knock the rating down by one full star.
My other complaint is the formulaic structure of most of Martini's books, but then I'll be the first to say that the formula generally works. The problem is that, to those familiar with the author, identifying the perpetrator from an early scene, or at least harboring strong suspicions, is quite easy. Still, motive and means take a while to be revealed, and there are a few red herrings here and there, so not all elements of the mystery are given away. And while I saw any references to Madriani's uncle Evo as stagnation points rather than welcome insights, the plot is generally taught and flows well. In their aggregate, these points may not seem enough to knock the book down another full star, but three and a half were not an option.
As for the book's strengths, the legal proceedings, realistic or not, keep the reader on the edge of his seat and, in general, Martini's style puts you right there in the courtroom, or wherever else the action is. Also to the author's credit, Madriani is spared from starring in a protracted "action scene" requiring razor sharp reflexes and the resourcefulness of a recon ranger to survive. These elements, as inconsistent with the middle aged lawyer's character as they are, would still be considered necessary by some authors, and it is to Martini's credit that he manages to reduce them to a very tolerable level both in duration and intensity. Equally inconsistent love scenes are absent altogether without the book's value losing one iota.
All in all, while not Martini's best, this one will keep your interest to the last page.

Another Great Book by this Author.......2007-03-01
While I am a huge Steve Martini fan, I was a little concerned when I read the dust jacket blurb about this book. I'm not a big fan of military thriller style books, and from the description, it appeared that he had moved closer to that genre than to the legal mystery category. However, judging books by their covers can be very deceptive, and this proved true with this book.
This is a wonderful legal mystery with numerous twists and turns. Steve Martini provides just enough peripheral characers as to make it difficult to really figure out who did it, and why. He also keeps you hanging until the end trying to figure out how the trial will end and whether his client will go free or fry.
The characters created by Mr. Martini are fantastic, with enough detail to make them interesting and little enough detail to know them too well. I particularly liked the prosecutor, whom Mr. Martini gave the nickname of the "Death Dwarf".
Finally, his characterizations of Harry Hinds and Paul Madriani are great. Unlike many writers of legal mysteries, his attorneys do not speak as if they came from a "silk stocking" law firm, but rather from the real world they would occupy. Harry is his usual smart mouthed self, while Mr. Madriani continues to be the calmer, and smarter of the two.
I highly recommend this book, along with the others written by Mr. Martini. I am now looking forward to my next chance to catch up with Harry, Paul and the others in his next book.
An interesting case but a little dry.......2006-10-13
Paul Madriani is a lawyer facing one of the toughest cases he has had for a while. A case that has already been walked away from by a high profile lawyer for undisclosed reasons. His client, Emiliano Ruiz, is accused of killing the head of a large software company, Madelyn Chapman, in an unusual style used by Special Forces called double tap. Given his military background, the placement of two shots in rapid succession into the target's head is something that Ruiz knows how to do. Add to that the fact that he served as Ms. Chapman's bodyguard, had an affair with her, and his gun was used in the killing, and the net of circumstantial evidence around Ruiz is pretty tight.
Paul and his partner set out to gather evidence that can either clear Ruiz or at least cast enough doubt on his guilt to save his life. The way the two of them go about their task reminded me a bit of Joe Friday and his partner Bill from the old Dragnet series. Their investigation keeps hitting roadblocks whenever they look into a seven year gap in Ruiz's records or try to find out about a shadowy general who was working with Madelyn on a secret software contract. The trial begins with Paul in possession of little evidence to help his client. Someone, it seems, wants to keep a lid on things and the lengths they are willing to go to keep their secrets may be the only hope Paul has of saving Ruiz.
I found the story engaging and the plot very plausible, but the book didn't always flow smoothly. At times it seemed like Steve Martini left off without finishing some thoughts and I couldn't tell whether it was his writing style or laziness. I also had to go back over the dialog in several places to understand just who was speaking. The inclusion of some historical perspective in the glimpses into the life of Paul's uncle Evo added depth to the book. Still, if he weren't an established author, I wonder if Mr. Martini could catch the eye of an editor with this offering.
If a book doesn't keep my interest I will drop it in the middle and I don't review books that I don't finish. The fact that I post a review means that the book is pretty good. I'm not a fan of lawyer stories (I don't think I've ever stayed awake through an episode of Perry Mason) but I finished and enjoyed Double Tap. If you like courtroom drama and a good mystery, I recommend reading this book.

This 400 page book hooked me in right at the beginning and kept my attention until the very last page - not the usual quick read. The story centers around a murder investigation involving the death of Madelyn Chapman, a provocative, successful, software magnate. For those who love courtroom drama, the author takes the reader into a trial scenario that is both riveting and clever; complete with a vast array of unpredictable characters.
