Book Description

For centuries, readers have been fascinated by the stories of the Arabian Nights. Perhaps the best-known is Sindbad the Sailor. He discovers an island paradise, but it is actually a giant whale. He sees a huge mountain. It is, in fact, the egg of the famous Roc, a bird so huge that she can carry an elephant in her talons. Sindbad manages to escape from Roc’s nest by tying his turban to the bird’s leg and is transported to the final adventure in this volume: the Valley of Diamonds. It is a story of high adventure and wit overcoming any obstacle.

The art in this book is very charming, but we found the story-telling to be a bit stiff in places. Still, it's a great way to introduce younger children to Sindbad.

If you like fantasy books, if you don't like fantasy books it doesn't matter you'll love this series of Books. Robert Aspirin (who by the way, edited the theives world books) has written an inceredibly hilarious series of books. Skeeve and ahz are the main characters and the situations they get into and the witty and inventive way they get out of those situations is very comical these books have everything from demons ( not demons as we know them but demons= short for deminsion traveler) to dragons ("Bleep"). I have been blind sided more than a few times by these books they are anything but predictible... you can't even count on the main characters being alive at the end of a book..( of course it's just a cliffhanger for the next book). Each book is a continuation of the last. I could talk about these books for hours, and i can get lost in them for even longer.... I have never met anyone who hasn't finished one of these books after starting it.... It is a good idea to start with the first book in the series, Another fine Myth, that way you have a good idea of what kind of relationship ahz and skeeve have and how they became friends.... the myth series is hilarious witty inventive and overall the funniest books i have ever read. I have read and re-read these books a hundred times and they never get boring

4 out of 5 stars Some basic info.......2003-01-11

First, if you haven't read the first two books in the Myth series, this book is a great chance to correct that. If you own the first two books, there's not much point in buying this collection. However...

According to the Asprin's new publisher, Meisha Merlin, the next few books, Myth Adventures 2 and 3 will both have NEW Myth Adventure novellas written by Asprin and Jody Lynne Nye. The short story in number 2 will be Myth Congeniality.

Also according to Meisha Merlin, there are at least two new Myth titles forthcoming, both of which will be by RLS and JLN. The next is due sometime in 2003 and will be called Myth-Alliances. The one after that is is Myth-taken Identity and is due August 2004.

Just thought you might want to know.

5 out of 5 stars Get the entire series.......2002-09-03

I was never much a fantasy fan before. I watch the Si-Fi Channel and I love the fantasy movies but I would refuse to read. Then my dad gave me the original hardcover copy "MYTH Adventures" (Another Fine Myth, Myth Conceptions, Myth Directions, and Hit or Myth) with the original cover illustrations (just to show how old my copies are) and ever since I have been addicted to fantasy books. Especially the MYTH series.

Just to warn you this is a laugh-out-loud story. I would not recommend reading this in public. You might get some odd looks from people that obviously have no sense of humor. Everything is a play on words and the characters are amazingly thought up. The plot is actually imaginable and it flows smoothly. The magik (not magic, there's a difference) has rules. What Skeeve and Aahz can and cannot do in the world of magik does not change throught the series.

To make a long review short, get this book. If you don't enjoy it then don't read it. It just means that you are a boring and unimaginative slouch. However, I can guarantee that from the very first chuckle you'll be hooked. Take it from a fantasy skeptic turned MYTH addict.

5 out of 5 stars More fun than a barrel of fish!.......2002-03-08

ok! I'm a long time Myth fan, so I was very suprised to see the new (old?) books brought to life again! Now, I hate to say it, but I always felt that pretty much all of the Myth books have pretty....short endings. Some are cliffhangers, some, maybe the publisher said, no only X # of pages and are very abrupt, and some are just totally unexpected.

But the concept of the Myth books is fascinating, and I have gone back many times to read then again and again... Much better when you have the whole series to continue on to! But the series is a must read for anyone who considers themselves a sci-fi fantasy fan! They are hillarious and definately worth the read (I don't suggest reading them IN a library cause I always end up stiffling my snickers and laughs!)

5 out of 5 stars Myth Adventures One........2001-11-02

In reading the back of the book you would think this is anything but the first book in the sieres. But it is. Other then that I only have good things to say about this book.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for teens!.......2007-09-04

This is a marvelous book. I am old enough to be Halfdan's mother so this is NOT just for teenagers. This is storytelling at it's finest. I can't wait for more from Judson Roberts!! If you like this book try Nigel Tranter's novels, these are not about vikings but are good historial fiction.

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read with points for history.......2007-05-21

Judson Roberts has in this book started a historical series well worth reading, first and foremost because it's an enjoyable read but also because he takes the reader inside Viking society and culture as it existed in real history rather than in the inaccurate portrayal we are familiar with from the movies.

The characters are complex and well-drawn, and Roberts does not flinch from setting the stakes high for them or from killing off characters that you come to care about. I thought he was particularly good at showing Halfdan, the story's narrator and main character, himself has to reassess what he thinks of people as events bring sudden changes to his life, realizing that what he once perceived things was not necessarily the whole picture. His thinking is forced to change, sometimes in very difficult ways, as when at fifteen his situation abruptly evolves from that of a mere thrall (slave), to that of not only a free man but an acknowledged son of a Viking chieftan, and then all to soon to that of a fugitive fighting for his life. A passage towards the end provides a good example:

"Though my heart protested, in my mind I knew Einar's counsel was wise. It was ironic. I'd often dreamed, as a thrall, of crossing the seas as a Viking raider. I'd dreamed of it as a path to adventure and glory. Now, it seemed, it was to be my path to vengeance. I wondered how long a journey it would be."

Roberts does a very good job of taking his time to develop the characters as real people and to show what Viking life was really like, particularly in how they viewed themselves and the rest of the world. But at the same time the action parts of the novel, particularly when Halfdan and his brother Harald and their companions come under attack and later as Halfdan must survive on his own, are very compelling and draw the reader completely into the struggle.

The only reason I do not rate this as five-stars instead of four is that, while Roberts does a very good job in taking the reader into the heart of Viking times and culture, it is not quite on the level I have seen achieved by writers like Bernard Cornwell and Patrick O'Brien. This in no way detracts from the merits of the book as a read, however, and I do recommend it for anyone interested in that period of history and for anyone who just enjoys a good read. I very much look forward to reading the next volume in the series.

5 out of 5 stars An Enchanting Story.......2007-03-31

Halfdan is just a slave. He is crafty and knows the way of animals but is only a slave to everyone he knows. When Halfdan's father, whom is the leader is about to die and asks his mother to join him in Valhalla, Halfdan is shocked. Why his mother? But his mother says that she will join him if her son, Halfdan is freed. Halfdan's father agrees.

When Halfdan is freed he is now royalty and has a great half brother and half sister. When Halfdan goes to see his new land that he now rules trouble starts. Halfdan finds himself being chased while little do the people chasing him know that he is not the criminal.

This book is adventurous and has a great plot. I hope everyone reading this will try out the book and enjoy it while I wait for the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars the strongbow saga book one viking warrior.......2006-10-30

A little slow starting, but once i began it, wanted to finish it in one setting.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting action story that will keep you turning the pages.......2006-09-30

"In one moment the Norns changed the pattern they were weaving in the fabric of my fate."

From the first line of Viking Warrior, Book One of the Strongbow Saga, I was drawn into the story of Halfdan, a fifteen-year-old boy who starts life as a slave but soon must meet the challenges of becoming a warrior. Set in the world of the 9th century Danish Vikings, Halfdan's life story is changed radically when his mother offers to sacrifice her own life so he can become a free man.

As the illegitimate son of a captured Irish princess and a Viking chieftain, Halfdan labors as a thrall, or slave, in his father's household. His only escape is into the woods he loves, where he masters the use of a bow and arrow. Whenever possible, he works for the estate metalsmith, becoming skilled at creating fine weapons out of molten iron.

When his father, Hrorick, is mortally wounded in battle, the Norns, or fates, weave Halfdan's life in a new direction. His half-brother, Harald, and half-sister, Sigrid, are forced to acknowledge him when his dying father makes him a free man. In exchange, his mother is sacrificed and buried beside the father that Halfdan has despised.

After his mother's death, Halfdan struggles to adjust to wearing fine clothes, dining at the head table in the longhouse, and accepting his new status as master instead of slave. Harald trains Halfdan in battle arts. Soon Halfdan has mastered the use of a sword and shield. He proves himself superior to his brother in the skill of archery.

Halfdan is thrilled to learn he has inherited lands of his own from Hrorick. But before he can claim his inheritance, he must survive the treachery and deceit of Hrorick's stepson, Toke. In the heat of battle, Halfdan faces danger and death, and discovers the hidden depths of his own warrior spirit.

Viking Warrior is a page-turner. Once I started reading the book, I was hooked and found it difficult to stop. There's something for everyone here: history, mystery, action, danger, and even a little romance. Historical details give the book depth and a sense of immediacy that draws you into the story from page one. More books are promised in the series, but this book comes to a satisfying stopping place in what one hopes will be a continuing saga of Halfdan's adventures.

Readers should be warned that the book doesn't wince away from describing the heat and fury of combat. Parents of readers under 12 may want to read the book along with their children. Halfdan lives in a violent world, but nothing is gratuitous. Every detail moves the story along at a fast clip.

Viking Warrior is a gripping story for young and old alike, and will appeal to male and female readers alike. Teachers will definitely want to include this on a reading list for any study of Viking history. It left me wanting to know more about the Vikings, so I was happy to find that the author has set up a website, [...], where you can find interesting articles, bibliographies for further reading, and links to websites.

4 out of 5 stars Vivid and exciting.......2003-10-23

Long ago a huge war erupted when a Seer named Var tried to control all. At the end of it Var was defeated, but not destroyed. Power was considered too tempting for any mortal to keep. So each Seer wrote out his knowledge. No one was allowed to share their knowledge or spells with another. Then it was all joined together and hidden in a safe place, under guard. It became known as The Chaos Scroll. It was the only known protection against Var. Master Elzabar was a powerful Seer. He had a vision and a prophecy was made!

Var had learned the secret for eternal life. After four hundred years, most of the Seers were dead, and Var returned to Poppan Valley for revenge! He began by kidnaping Briana, a married woman whom he coveted. Her husband was Zernue, the Keeper of the Valley. Their children would embark on a dangerous journey for help against Var and the dark riders. Laila and Tokar, as foretold, would battle magic, demons, and ultimately Var, himself. The world's fate would rest in their young hands!

**** A fanciful tale of magic! Personally, I believe this book is perfect for teens and young adults. However, all ages will find themselves intrigued. Lots of colorful characters and creatures to spark the imagination. Recommended! ****

I bought Chaos Scroll to save for future grandchildren and thought I would read just a couple of chapters since it was a "teen" book. I couldn't put it down and stayed up late into the night to finish it. I believe Ms. Stacey is a truly talented author with the ability to make fantasy worlds come to life. I can't wait to read the next book.

The manuscript and map appear to give directions to finding the hiding place of the Holy Grail, but the Drew children must decipher the clues quickly, as other, unsavoury people are also after the grail.
Susan Cooper's `Over Sea, Under Stone" is first in the `Dark is Rising' series, but it is really more of an adventure story, rather than a fantasy story. It is an enjoyable story, with the Grail angle adding a little spice to the story

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Audio Performance.......2007-09-15

"Over Sea Under Stone" is the first of the "Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper. At this summer's Harry Potter movie, I saw a preview for the DIR film and thought I'd read the books.

I found the audio book for the first one at the library and thought that would be a relatively low-investment way to get the story. I will say that I have never heard an audiobook performance to equal Alex Jennings. The story was a good kid's tale, with the classic treasure map, quest, and bad guys. It had a few nice touches along the way that made it good, not necessarily great, story. But the audio performance is in a league by itself.

Alex Jennings pulled off the widest range of voices I have ever heard, from the deep and grumbling Uncle Merry to the Irish housekeeper, to the male and female children. His telling of the story was nothing short of remarkable. I look forward to hearing others of his readings in this series. If you read the book and weren't impressed, try the audiobook, and you may come away with a different opinion.

2 out of 5 stars old stereotypes don't get better with time.......2007-08-26

Written in the '60's, this book (and the series that follows it) explores a classic battle between Light and Dark; in Over Sea, Under Stone three children on vacation in Cornwall discover a set of clues that may lead them to recovery of a Grail linked to King Arthur. This book is the least original of the series-- it feels a lot like The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe-- but all of the books suffer from the same problem: the female characters are so out-of-date. Throughout the book, Jane, the middle child, acts like a cross between nagging sister and nagging mom; she is easily scared, she always has a reason not to try to find the Grail, she's the one who's fooled into giving away some secrets, and when the boys go in to explore the frightening cave "poor Jane" (as Cooper calls her) stays outside, standing guard (and screws that up too). Even reading these books in the early 80s as a kid I found the women unlikeable and identified with the boys instead, but at this point Young Adult fantasy has moved so far past that-- with tough, smart girls in works by authors like Tamora Pierce and Diane Duane-- that you have to wonder what the point is of resurrecting these books now-- except for the tie-in with the movie. (This applies to the other books in the series as well; in The Dark Is Rising, Will's sisters are clothes- and boy-obsessed, whiny, and the character who goes to the Dark Side is a weak-willed, vain woman... *yawn*.) With so much good work being written now, why would anyone want their little girls (or little boys) reading this-- and, will children want to read it?

    2 out of 5 stars Unimpressed.......2007-08-15

After seeing the movie trailer I was pretty excited to start this series, especially since I am a big fan of fantasy books (Harry Potter, Narnia, Lord of the Rings, etc). However, I couldn't have been more disappointed. There search for the Grail won't be exciting to anyone older than 10, its predictable, unbeilievable, and the characters are underdeveloped and boring. Hopefully this series gets better as i have already bought the second book...

The not actually a great uncle great uncle invites his relatives, which includes three children, to Cornwall for the holidays.

He does have an ulterior motive, as the children later realise their 'Gumerry', or Great Uncle Merriman Lyon, is Merlion, or Merlin.

He is leading the forces of the Dark away from the kids, while he, one of the power Old Ones, warriors for the Light serves as a decoy.

He hopes with some clues and firing of the imagination the children will find one of the artifacts of power that will be crucial in the conflict between the superhuman supernatural forces of Light and Dark.

    This artifact is The Grail.

He has to hope his misdirection and vigilance will keep the children safe enough, without being able to help directly and endanger them directly.
