Chester Raccoon doesn't want to go to school--he wants to stay home with his mother. She assures him that he'll love school--with its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better, she has a special secret that's been in the family for years--the Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as cozy as home. She takes her son's hand, spreads his tiny fingers into a fan and kisses his palm--smack dab in the middle: "Chester felt his mother's kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart." Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother's kiss. Chester is so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he--in a genuinely touching moment--gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when he is away. Audrey Penn's The Kissing Hand, published by the Child Welfare League of America, is just the right book for any child taking that fledgling plunge into preschool--or for any youngster who is temporarily separated from home or loved ones. The rough but endearing raccoon illustrations are as satisfying and soothing for anxious children as the simple story. (Ages 5 and older) --Karin Snelson
Book Description
In this contemporary classic Chester Raccoon seeks love and reassurance from his mother as he ventures out into the world to attend his very first day of school.
Customer Reviews:
great first day of school book.......2007-10-10
Sweet story about a little one that doesn't want to leave mom to go to school. Very loving story. My daughter (4) really liked this book. They actually read it on the first day in her pre-school class. Great gift idea.
Love Love Love it.......2007-09-22
I think everyone should own this book. What a great message: Mom's love will always be there.
sweet story.......2007-09-21
I bought this for my five year old to give to him before going to Kindergarten. He wasn't afraid to go, but he really enjoyed the story and the sweet sentiment. He made me a little Kissing Hand picture with the stickers in the back, and I made him a little Kissing Hand note with one of the stickers that he stuck in his pocket for the first few days of school. He even gives his little brothers kissing hands from time to time - very sweet book.
What a gift this author provides.......2007-09-19
For young Chester Raccoon, the first day of school is scary indeed, and young children will be able to relate to the young raccoon who cries at the thought of being separated from his mother. But his wise mother sends him off with a wonderful secret to see him through and carry the memory and strength of her love with him always. The book's foreword says The Kissing Hand is "for the child within each of us who sometimes needs reassurance." Love is truly the bedrock that sustains and reassures us on our path through life, and this book reinforces the importance of loving relationship for us all. Beautifully told, the tale may give youngsters the confidence they need to cope with whatever comes their way. In an unusual move, the author has teamed up two acclaimed artists (one a descendant of Sir Christopher Wren) with distinctive styles that nonetheless blend beautifully. These are endearing, luminous illustrations - Chester Raccoon has got to be the cutest raccoon in all of children's literature.
best first day of school book.......2007-09-14
On my sons first day of kindergarten, the parents were invited to attend with the child. His teacher started out the first class with a project and then had all the students help her read this book.
Since then my son has kissed my hand every day and not had one bout of sadness at all. This book is a great way for a child learn that its ok to spend some time away from mom and that it can be fun time. I'm glad his teacher read this book while the parents were there.
I recommend this book to anyone with a child in kindergarten that is having a hard time or a child just starting school after being home with mom.

Anxiety Relief for Your Dog--and You.......2007-04-19
As with her other "booklet" style guides, Patricia McConnell has managed to cram a vast amount of useful information into a small space. She briefly discusses the causes of separation anxiety, and how to recognize it. The information on what separation anxiety is *not* is invaluable for owners who might be having difficulty distinguishing between true separation anxiety and boredom (a by-product of the dog being understimulated mentally and physically). She then makes a number of suggestions that are straightforward and easy to follow. It is true that some dogs will need more personal assistance in the form of a behavior specialist or veterinary behaviorist, but this guide is a good place to start.

Book Description
Toddlers can drive you bonkers…so adorable and fun one minute…so stubborn and demanding the next! Yet, as unbelievable as it sounds, there is a way to turn the daily stream of “nos” and “don’ts” into “yeses” and hugs…if you know how to speak your toddler’s language. In one of the most useful advances in parenting techniques of the past twenty-five years, Dr. Karp reveals that toddlers, with their immature brains and stormy outbursts, should be thought of not as pint-size people but as pintsize…cavemen.
Having noticed that the usual techniques often failed to calm crying toddlers, Dr. Karp
discovered that the key to effective communication was to speak to them in their own primitive language. When he did, suddenly he was able to soothe their outbursts almost every time! This amazing success led him to the realization that children between the ages of one and four go through four stages of “evolutionary” growth, each linked to the development of the brain, and each echoing a step in prehistoric humankind’s journey to civilization:
• The “Charming Chimp-Child” (12 to 18 months): Wobbles around on two legs, grabs everything in reach, plays a nonstop game of “monkey see monkey do.”
• The “Knee-High Neanderthal” (18 to 24 months): Strong-willed, fun-loving, messy, with a vocabulary of about thirty words, the favorites being “no” and “mine.”
• The “Clever Caveman” (24 to 36 months):
Just beginning to learn how to share, make friends, take turns, and use the potty.
• The “Versatile Villager” (36 to 48 months): Loves to tell stories, sing songs and dance, while trying hard to behave.
To speak to these children, Dr. Karp has developed two extraordinarily effective techniques:
1) The “fast food” rule — restating what your child has said to make sure you got it right;
2) The four-step rule — using gesture, repetition, simplicity, and tone to help your
irate Stone-Ager be happy again.
Once you’ve mastered “toddler-ese,” you will be ready to apply behavioral techniques specific to each stage of your child’s development, such as teaching patience and calm, doing time-outs (and time-ins), praise through “gossiping,” and many other strategies. Then all the major challenges of the toddler years — including separation anxiety, sibling rivalry, toilet training, night fears, sleep problems, picky eating, biting and hitting, medicine taking — can be handled in a way that will make your toddler feel understood. The result: fewer tantrums, less yelling, and, best of all, more happy, loving time for you and your child.

Love it.......2007-09-11
I bought this book because Dr. Karp's book The Happest baby on the Block saved my sanity. His advise really works, and helped me feel as if I had some control, and ways to cope with an unpredictable child. Even if only half of his advise works for your child it is worth it. Good luck.
Terrible book.......2007-09-06
Here is the book, in summary:
Your child acts like a caveman and pretty much is a cave man in every way. You act like a cave man too so that he understands you and he is happy.
Read the above paragraph 500 times. The end.
Good But Not Great!.......2007-09-02
I was expecting the amazing tips and tricks that Happiest Baby on the Block offered. I liked it but it wasn't as good as his previous book.
not the baby book..........2007-08-09
I loved Karp's baby book! Could not have made it through the first few months w/out it. Do NOT like this one though. I recommend 123 Magic 2-12yr old.
Very helpful with my 2-year old! .......2007-07-12
Dr. Karp provided specific examples with direct guidance about how to respond to challenging behavior. I tried the "fast food" response and it worked. I would skip to Chapters 8 & 9 if I didn't have enough time to read the entire book. These chapters were the most helpful.

Thanks from Bubba.......2007-10-03
I adopted a year old dog that had been rescued by a friend from a puppy mill. Bubba was scared of the world, cowering in his crate for the first week. He was afraid of every noise, scared of every person. I bought the book,"Help For Your Fearful Dog", and proceeded to follow the suggestions of Ms. Wilde. It was slow going at first, but as each day and week progressed Bubba began to make astonishing progress. As suggested in the book, we started to school together (Bubba is on his third class)and it has made all the difference in the world. This book and its gameplan for your fearful dog works. Just ask Bubba.
help for shy dogs.......2007-09-17
I found this book very helpfull. It is technical yet easy to read, and I love the end of chapter summaries. I have already started my timid rescue dog on a plan based on this book.
Great Book For Owners of Fearful Dogs.......2007-06-24
This is one of my favorite dog behavior books in the last 5 years. As a dog trainer and behavior consultant, I have been recommending this book to my clients as a complement to their training programs. They love it! They are so glad to have a resource that they can share with family members and friends to help everyone better understand their dog. Nicole Wilde does an excellent job of presenting information in a way that is easy for the average dog owner to understand, but still keeps it interesting for the professional dog trainer.
I give it 5 stars and 4 Paws up!
I Love "Help for Your Fearful Dog"!.......2007-05-28
As a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant I have to say this is a "must have" on every professional's bookshelf as well as many dogowner's. As have many of Nicole's books in the past, this one lived up to its name. Not only is it helpful but it is written in "plain English" and with a lot of humor to boot! I now make a habit of consulting the wonderful bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter before I finish my behavior treatment plans just to make sure I haven't forgotten another great suggestion that my clients will want to try out!
I also like how Nicole delves into complementary therapies such as TTouch, aromatherapy, Flower Essences and more.
This book is well worth the price!

Dr. Bowlby's second pioneering volume examines the effect of seperation on the development of the child and the psychopathology that often follows seperation.
Customer Reviews:
Seminal work on attachment and loss, Technical, but readable........2005-07-04
Bowlby is a clear and cogent thinker who takes time to look at an important issue in tremendous detail. Taking into account much previous research and theorizing, he accepts and refutes a wide body of work in making his point. You may not agree with all of his conclusions (I may not agree with all of his conclusions), but this is not a book to be discounted lightly. Should be required reading for anyone interested in the fields of psychoanalysis and child development.
Classic study of an important topic.......2000-08-20
This book was first published in 1973, and the work of it was done mostly in the 1960's by Briton Dr. Bowlby. It's "Volume Two" of a trilogy, but does not have to read along with the companion volumes. Like his other two works on childhood, this interesting work, again, introduces his ideas and promotes a compassionate understanding of the lives of children.
Separation anxiety, anxious attachment, and other phenomena of attachment are well-known and accepted reactions now - we expect it from our pets as well as our babies - but at one time, were less well understood (and anticipated.) This work, lucidly and compassionately, lays it out for the reader. The book is divided into three sections, and in a well-organized and deeply accessible fashion, Bowlby proceeds. The Sections are "Security, Anxiety, and Distress," "An Ethological Approach to Human Fear," and finally, "Individual Differences in Susceptibility to Fear: Anxious Attachment".
Bowlby uses his own prior clinical work and that of others to support his assertions. The father's role, the role of anger and fear, and many other factors are discussed. This is a scholarly study, and has much to tell readers. It's thoroughly readable and interesting, not only for its subject but because Bowlby can tell a story and hold the reader's interest through-out. Not a "how-to" or a quick fix - rather, a deeply sensible and basic study. Highly recommended for parents, teachers, clinicians.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-08-02
I haven't finished this book yet but it is basic enough to incorporate into your life to help you get through your depression and anxiety.
I have been depressed since the age of 19 and I'm now 36 so I am excited to see how much it can help me in the long run.
Helps w/ the issues (and much more).......2007-06-28
It's been about 3-4 years since I read this book. I was in a dark period after a family tragedy. I'm a very well adjusted and happy adult and this book is a big part of it.
Revolutionary? No. It's just a simple way to re-engineer self-image. What Dr. Joe advocates is 1. disrupt the negative self-talk (all depression patients know about the neg. self talk). 2. replace the negative "ST" with positive "ST." 3. practice this habit over and over until it becomes routine (perhaps the most challenging part). 4. After doing this exercise for about 6-12 months, suddenly you discover that this activity becomes habit, and you then pleasantly discover that your self image is constantly positive and you feel much-much better.
Then, you start to apply this technique to other parts of your life, and, if you're like me, you realize that all that stuff the dali lama preaches is real: you really do have control over your life!
This book requires steady work-hard work which, if practiced, becomes easy with time. Hang in there folks! Stick to the plan and you will find your way out of the dark hole!
Who else do I recommend? Check out Tal Ben-Shahar's books. He's another positive psychologist. Good stuff.
LOGICAL and Basic! Very helpful!.......2007-05-04
This book is for anyone tired of feeling like a victim of their own thoughts. After reading this book I was able to immediately incorporate his techniques successfully. For example, I had a class that always makes gives me anxiety so when I was in class and feeling awful, I looked at the clock and said to myself, "2 more hours. I can handle anything for 2 hours." After that I was fine! It's not just about telling yourself positive things that may be untrue or simply unhelpful, it's about separating fact from fiction. It was true I hated the class, but it was also true that I could handle it for 2 hours. Once you separate fact from fiction you begin to see how your self doubt doesn't need to have the upper hand. You can choose to stop feeling insecure and start LIVING. Negative thoughts stop us from action and freedom from these thought allows us to LIVE. I also recommend the book Dancing with Fear by Foxman, very good and very helpful, but if you want something more pragmatic - buy Luciani's book.
Self Coaching.......2007-03-13
To be honest this wasn't a book that I could get into. I returned it after scanning it.
even better book .......2007-03-12
this book is great. it really puts things into prespective. if give a lot of definitions an backgroud information. It offers a lot of clarity and helps one tackle the life challenging problems of anxiety and depression. i strongly recommend this book

Book Description
Effective Tools for Parents
Does your child cling to you whenever you try to leave? Does he or she react strongly to the thought of being left alone? Psychologists call this kind of behavior separation anxiety, and it's usually a normal part of your child's developmental processone that they outgrow. Sometimes, though, extreme or persistent kinds of separation anxiety can make life difficult for both you and your child. In some cases, separation anxiety issues can lead a child to be reluctant to get ready for school or, worse, to simply refuse to go at all. This behavior, called school refusal, comes with its own set of challenges. This book shows you how to identify when your child's separation anxiety or school refusal is more than just a phase and offers effective tools that you can use to manage your child's anxiety. Real-life stories about other children facing these challenges will help you keep your situation in perspective and remember that, with patience and persistence, your child will overcome his or her anxiety.
After reading this book, you will be able to:
· Identify your child's unique safety needs · Empower him or her with simple and effective coping skills · Guide your child to better sleep, more comfortable alone time, and regular school attendance · Monitor your progress and tap additional resources as you need them
"Eisen and Engler have written an outstanding guide for parents of children who suffer from separation anxiety or school refusal. This well-written book is the first of its type, describing practical, step-by-step strategies similar to those that have been studied extensively in anxiety research centers around the world. In addition to being a valuable resource for parents, this book will be very useful to teachers and mental health practitioners who work with anxious children." Martin M. Antony, Ph.D., ABPP, director of the Anxiety Treatment and Research Centre at St. Joseph's Healthcare and professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University, both in Hamilton, ON
"Separation anxiety can derail a child's normal development at any age. Moreover, it can make life miserable for that child's parents and familynot only the child. This book helps parents navigate the murky waters of separation anxiety by giving them a roadmap and a set of proven and effective strategies to help them deal with it and, yes, even to prevent it. In the hands of caring and motivated parents, it is a veritable tour de force. It is a well written, engaging, and eminently practical book. Parents (and their separation anxious children) will be thanking Eisen and Engler for years to come for their sage and helpful advice." Thomas H. Ollendick, Ph.D., university distinguished professor and director of the Child Study Center in the Department of Psychology at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA
"A highly user-friendly guide to help parents understand how to help children cope more effectively with separation anxiety and school refusal. Eisen and Engler are true leaders in the field of child anxiety. Their use of real life case illustrations really brings these evidence based skills home to parents and children. I would highly recommend this book to our own patients, to parents, to clinicians or graduate students working with children and families, and to all others who want to understand specific ways to help children with anxiety issues in ways that promotes their positive development." Donna B. Pincus, Ph.D., research associate professor and director of the Child and Adolescent Fear and Anxiety Treatment Program in the Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders at Boston University
"Eisen and Engler provide straightforward advice for parents of a child who is afraid of separation or afraid of school. Separation anxiety is a typical step in development for most children, but when it is interfering and present in older youngsters, then it merits attention. This step-by-step approach for parents, potentially used in conjunction with a therapist, offers sound advice and guidance that is consistent with the research evidence. The book is well-informed, organized, readable, and rich with examples." Philip C. Kendall, Ph.D., ABPP, Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology and Director of the Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA
"Eisen and Engler have provided a wealth of information for parents about the do's and don'ts of helping their child with separation anxiety or school refusal . Clear, easy language, practical exercises, and real life examples are all based on the authors' hands-on experience and scientifically proven methods. This book is an essential resource for parents who are stuck in the binds produced by a separation anxious child and for therapists who are trying to provide an empirically validated program." Ronald M. Rapee, Ph.D., director of the Macquarie University Anxiety Research Unit and author of Helping Your Anxious Child
"Eisen and Engler have written a clear, detailed guide for parents who are striving to support each child's autonomy and confidence. Supported by research and clinical insight, this book offers specific strategies to help children achieve healthy separation, while respectfully acknowledging the emotional lives of children and the need for parents to take care of themselves. Parenting is the most humbling effort, and this book supports this most important relationship in a child's life." Gerard Costa, Ph.D., director of the YCS Institute for Infant and Preschool Mental Health in East Orange, NJ

Excellent Book.......2004-06-09
While all of the books in the Hilltop School series by Rosemary Wells are excellent, this book is exceptional. The message that parents always come back is delivered in a particularly effective manner. The book also shows how Yoko separates from her mother in an incremental process over which she has some level of control. A truly brilliant book.
Get your child ready for school.......2002-09-20
I've read a lot of 'first day of school' type books recently, getting my daughter prepared for preschool. I'd rate this as one of the better books we read, and if your child likes Yoko and the other kids in Wells' Hilltop School books, I strongly recommend it. What I like about the book is that it gently repeats the reassuring idea, that parents "will come back. They always do." Once Yoko accepts that, she's ready to be left at school by herself.

Book Description
This little boy will do anything to avoid an evening with the baby-sitter. He pleads with his parents. He begs. He bargains. Maybe he has a fever of a hundred and ten. Maybe he'll run away. Maybe he won't say good-bye!
Customer Reviews:
Ease the good-byes.......2000-08-01
My young children enjoyed this book because they could identify with the content of a young boy who doesn't want his parents to leave him with a babysitter for the night. This delightful story proves that not all picture books have to be syrupy-sweet. Children see themselves in the young character who refuses to let his parents leave without a fuss. You know that old adage that "misery loves company"? Judith Viorst is the champion at depicting young children's complaints, and this selection is no exception. Share it with your young child today.
