Book Description
When orphan Maria arrives at Moonacre Manor, she feels as if she's come home. Her new guardian is kind and funny, and everyone there is like an old friend. But beneath the beauty and comfort lies a tragedy. Maria is determined to find out about it, change it, and give her own life story a happy ending. This new-fashioned story is just as satisfying and memorable as your favorite fairy tale.
"The theme is as old as the fairy tales, and it is written with a haunting beauty of wording and atmosphere . . . A book to cherish, to read again and again and again." (The Saturday Review )
Customer Reviews:
A lovely , beautifully written fantasy.......2007-09-25
If you are cynical, negative, and have a stunted imagination, you won't like this story. However, if you enjoy upbeat, beautifully written fantasy tales, it's likely that you, like me, will adore it. Granted, there are heart-wrenching, frightening moments and a sneering villian, but all comes right in the end and nothing truly horrific or disgusting happens. What a relief from most modern writing! The descriptive writing is exquisite; I felt that I was right there seeing, hearing and feeling everything. There are some interesting mysteries which are neatly solved to the satisfaction of all. The mood of the book is enchantment from beginning to end.
You missed a couple, Elizabeth Goudge!.......2007-08-25
The Little White Horse is about Maria Merryweather, the newest Moon Princess at Moonacre Manor, and her quest to bring perfect happiness to the village of Silverydew by saving it from the wicked, wicked ways of the Men from the Dark Woods. Along the way she reunites estranged lovers, returns a monastery to the Lord and discovers her One True Love - all fresh from orphanhood at the age of 13, and only with the help of pluck, curiosity, magical animals, a host of early-risers and the reader's hyperactive suspension of disbelief.
Perhaps in 1946 (or in 1842, the setting of the story) poachers and cattle rustlers were thwarted by sashaying into their castle, partaking of their dinner of fish and stolen beef and then suddenly piping, "You should trade with the village people." These days we know that it takes a gun and a call to the sheriff.
But Monsieur Cocq de Noir, arch-eyebrowed arch-villain of this piece, should not only trade with The Village People, he should also befriend them, carouse with them and exchange fashion tips with them. Here is a man who has adopted The Black Cock as his emblem and lives in a castle with "the men of dungeon and wall" who love waving their cudgels and swords around. He is one who requires the correct accessory for every occasion, even the examination of conscience. To Maria he says, "Give me those pearls, and I might seriously consider the mending of my ways."
Elizabeth Goudge wrote fairy-tale-perfect endings for several couples and yet missed an opportunity to develop a friendship between Monsieur Cocq de Noir and one who could have introduced him to more gustatory delights than just roasted beef and broiled fish.
Tell me if Sir Benjamin's cook isn't the perfect one to whip the leader of the Men of the Dark Woods and his castle dungeons into shape:
'Marmaduke Scarlet is scarcely a man, Miss Heliotrope', comforted Sir Benjamin. '... his revealing himself to you is an enormous compliment, for as a general rule, his dislike of the female sex causes him to avoid all women...'
'So now I know,' said Miss Heliotrope. 'And I could not have believed that so small... a gentleman... could have been so expert a housewife!'
Why M. Scarlet's revelation of his small... self to Miss Heliotrope was a compliment could only be guessed by this reader, but there you go: he's the perfect housewife.
This reader would even suggest the perfect binding ceremony gift for Monsieur Cocq de Noir and M. Scarlet: something to hold M. Scarlet's kitchen knife. Under a tree Maria found a "sheath... beautifully made in the shape of a cock."
This book is for girls who still believe in kind lions and shining unicorns, boys who love baking and interior decorating, adults who were children in the 1940s and people who snigger at unintentional double entendres.
great fantasy- a must read.......2007-03-29
I bought this book many years ago when my family was going on vacation. I just loved it and have read it numerous times since then.....most recently to my daughter who also loved it. Feminists (which we are) should take some of the concepts with a grain of salt but the tale is beautifully crafted and satisfying.
My Childhood Escape - The Little White Horse.......2007-03-29
My mother first read me this great book when I was six or seven. Then, at eight I decided to read it myself. At first I didn't believe it was the same book but in time I realised, it wasn't your average book. This book contained a million elements - Romance, Action, Tension, Drama, Jealousy, Religion, and undoubtedly more that I cannot yet name. This book was my escape and even now, at twelve I love it. Everytime I read the book, I find it exciting. No matter how many times I have gazed upon its pages, there is always something that feels new and captivates my interest immediately. A story of an unlikely heroine and a little white horse. Moon Princesses, real imaginary boys, Black Men, pearls, love, Little White Horses and extraordinary animals. What more do you want in a book?
An enchanting story, up there with the best fairytales.......2007-03-20
In 2002 I bought the little white horse, and in 2007 I read it for the first time. It was a marvolous "little" story telling of a thirteen year old girl named Maria Merryweather who's father is killed in war. She must go off with her little dog Wiggin's and her Governess Ms.Heliotrope to Moonacre Manor, which is owned by her reliable Uncle Sir Benjamin, who is her only livig relative. She is also destined to save Moonacre Manor, if you were wondering. from the Men from the Dark Hills. She will befriend the most extrodianry characteres, and find her destiny to be the Moon Maiden. She will discover secrets, solve mysteries, discover what it means to be a Merryweather, and make amends between old lovers. But how in the world could one girl and her animal friends defeat hundreds of wicked men?
This story held me spellbound, and the sweet innocence and fairytale like setting will stay in your memory for years to come. To put it plainly, it was flat out wonderful.
Book Description
Mark Rashid's entertaining stories will introduce you to quiet solutions for resolving training problems from the horse's point of view. Topics include ground manners, picking up feet, headshyness, trailer loading, mounting problems, balking, and head tossing. If you are about to buy a horse and definitely if you are about to sell your horse because of problems, or even if you only wish you owned a horse, this book will give you a whole new perspective into the horse's point of view.
Customer Reviews:
Equine enthusiast.......2007-09-19
Mark Rashid's story format is very mindful of my days under the spell of cowboy and farrier story tellers. Mr. Rashid is absolutely generous in getting a point across without shaking a finger or being cryptic or evasive. He softly delivers the idea and lets the reader sift out their own application.
I love the 'old man'. I actually think I might have known him, in probably about 20 different people who counseled me in my early horse days. Whether the old man is/was a real person is superfilious as he functions as a terrific metaphor providing the conduit for learning and understanding.
But,actually he really is a very, very real personality in the cowboy and farrier world at large.
Couldn't stop reading it.......2007-01-11
Loved this book. Wished it wouldn't have ended. Mark Rashid is the kind of person everyone would want to be. I put him in the class with Chris Cox, Clinton Anderson and Pat Parelli.
Great book.......2006-11-10
I volunteer at a horse rescue. We see so many horses who have had a rough life. I want to try to understand them more. Mr Rashid helps me understand what some horses have had to deal with.
This book is great. It will make you laugh and cry.
I really enjoyed it. I wish more people would read it before they get a horse.
Monty move over Mark Rashid is here!.......2006-07-25
Funny, forthright and no holds barred this book describes horses, horse training and owners as it really is.
Particularly hysterical is the day that Mark goes out and get successively kicked, stepped on thrown down and outsmarted all to end up with a new way to deal with the headshy horse that is frightened. Works yes, safer yes and he took the lumps to show you how.
Great read for anyone it discribes an art while peppered with views of the life. Well written and compelling it deserves to be compared with All Creatures Great and Small and has been.
Highly recommended. Can't wait to read the other ones.
Best Horse Training Book I've ever read.......2006-05-09
This is the best horse training book I've ever read. He gives practical examples and illustrations that can be applied to any number of horses in my own barn! I'm excited to have a 'mentor' that actually sees resulsts apart from forcing a horse into something, tying his head down, etc. This man offers advice along the natural horsemanshp lines, but freely gives it! You don't have to buy DVD series after series...just read this book and start tackling some of your annoying/unsafe problems!

For most people, being swept away in a horse stampede during a raging thunderstorm would be a terrifying disaster. For the young Native American girl in Paul Goble's 1979 Caldecott-winning masterpiece, The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, it is a blessing. Although she loves her people, this girl has a much deeper, almost sacred connection to her equine friends. The storm gives her the opportunity to fulfill her dream--to live in a beautiful land among the wild horses she loves.
With brilliant, stylized illustrations and simple text, Paul Goble tells the story of a young woman who follows her heart, and the family that respects and accepts her uniqueness. Considering how difficult it is for some communities to allow friendships to grow between people of different cultures, this village's support for the girl's companions of choice is admirable. Goble's bold paintings reflect this noble open-mindedness. The young horse fanatic of the house will joyfully add this book to his or her collection. Children are passionate people; they will relate. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
"There was a girl in the village who loved horses... She led the horses to drink at the river. She spoke softly and they followed. People noticed that she understood horses in a special way."
And so begins the story of a young Native American girl devoted to the care of her tribe's horses. With simple text and brilliant illustrations. Paul Goble tells how she eventually becomes one of them to forever run free.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful art, distant voice.......2006-09-04
I have to argee with a previous reviewer who commented on the weakness of the narrative voice in _The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses_: it is just too distant and does not draw children in as many other stories do. Graphically it has a Native American "feel" to it, which helps the weak writing, which is why I gave it 4 stars. A better collection of Native stories is Joseph Bruhac's _Dog People: Native Dog Stories_.
The girl who loved wild horses .......2005-12-20
The book I read is called The girl who loved wild horses. The girl who loved wild horses is for younger children under 8. It is about a girl that lived with wild horses. In a terrible storm the horses get scared and run away into the wild horse country. Since she does not know the way home how will she survive? I would give this book 3 stars.
Not a hit at my house.......2005-07-29
Halfway into the story, my kids asked if we could read something else. I suspect this may be a book that appeals more to adults than to children. The art work is beautiful and the plot worthwhile, but the narrative voice is so distant and emotionless--I expect that is probably what turned my kids off. The girl, the tribe, and the animals don't have names. The piece reads like a prologue rather than a story.
An excellent book for horse lovers and lovers of art.......2005-05-31
What I want to focus on about this book is the high quality, truly amazing artwork. I've never seen anything like this anywhere, surely the artist has a style all his own. I won't retell the story but want to also point out that the pictures actually tell the story without even reading the words. My daughter is only six and I read her the story and asked her questions as I read to see if she could predict what would happen next (she uses picture clues.) She answered the questions correctly.
Most of the pages backgrounds are white which is usually "against the rules" but I believe it was for dramatic effect for the blackness on the few pages that deal with the thunderstorm part of the story.
The moral of story of THE GIRL WHO LOVED WILD HORSES shows us that if we pursue what we truly love long enough and with all our heart we will achieve it. Truly an inspiration, this exceptional book was the winner of the Caldecott Medal for 1979.
Soar!
A horse is a horse, of course of course.......2004-06-26
The ultimate girl/horse story. There are plenty of tales in which a young girl bonds with a very special horse. This is the rare book in which the girl not only bonds with a horse but, in the end, becomes one herself (as well as that horse's mate). Paul Goble made quite a career out of telling Native American folktales in picture book form. In this particular story, a girl's love for four-legged beasts is taken to its logical extreme.
In this book, a girl once cared for her tribe's horses during the day. She would water them and find them places to feed. One day, a storm rose while the girl slept and the horses grazed. In a panic, the animals began to stampede away, and it was only by her skill that the girl was able to climb aboard one. When at last they stopped, the girl met the leader of all the wild horses, a beautiful spotted stallion. The girl continued to live with the creatures until one day she was successfully captured by members of her own tribe. She was happy to see her parents once more, but begged to return to the horses. The tribe agreed and each year she would return briefly to give the people a new colt. When she didn't return one year, riders swore that they saw a black mare that greatly resembled the girl, now the mate of the spotted stallion. The book ends with a Navaho's song about his horse and Black Elk (an Oglala Sioux)?s dream about a stallion's song.
I was a little shocked that this tale never identified the tribe to which the girl belonged. Since, however, this is an original story and not a retelling of a classic Native American tale (or so the book would lead you to believe) I wasn't too perturbed by the omission. After all, when people tell stories about themselves, they rarely identify their nationality or allegiance. In this book, the girl's tribe is referred to simply as "the people". If you've ever seen a Paul Goble book before, you know what to expect when you read this. His characters are fairly featureless, though as an artist he spends a significant bit of time detailing their clothing, hair, weapons, homes, etc. He expresses a great love of color in all his pictures, and it's quite enjoyable to flip through the shots of multicolored horses. In its construction, this book is incredibly lovely. But the question that came to my mind while reading it was, how interesting will children find this tale? For those kids obsessed by horses, I think this book will go over like gangbusters. After all, as horse-love goes, this girl is an extreme example. In other ways, the book is a bit dull. When you illustrate a tale in which emotions are not visible on the characters, you're going to lose those readers that like seeing happy and sad expressions. It's a style choice on the part of the author/illustrator and while I respect it I cannot wholly recommend it.
Just the same, it's a lovely book to flip through. Just know that it is an original Native American tale and not a retelling. For every child that has imagined running away and joining a band of wild animals, this is the perfect story to read. A lovely lively concoction.

Customer Reviews:
An excellent "Gift Book" that is indeed inspirational and heartwarming .......2006-12-12
This is the perfect collection for teenage, horse-crazy girls, and reminds me of the Horse Stories I gobbled up as a kid.
It's a collection of true stories, apparently from people all over the country, each told to a writer and then edited together into this collection. Some are better than others, but they all remind us of how noble, perceptive and kind horses can be when they become partners with their owners instead of beasts of burden.
Horse Miracles.......2006-02-08
This book is plagued with plagerism of already published stories. Most of the details regarding the stories about Ruffian and Secretariat are inaccurate, and they called Riva Ridge, "River Ridge". Very, very, very poorly researched and written. I do not advise anyone to buy this book. I was very disgusted with it. Also, they mention several times that horses are often sold for dog food, and apparently they did NO research on this little fact, HORSES HAVEN"T been used in dog food for nearly 30 years!!!! Perhaps they were trying to cover up for the slaughter industry which buys and slaughters horses for human consumption overseas. I couldn't even finish the book, I didn't trust any of the content as truthful.
Charming! Inspirational ! 'neigh' other way to describe it.......2004-06-14
As a rider and having owned a horse I was so pleased to discover "HORSE MIRACLES". Brad Steiger and Sherry Hansen Steiger's newest delightful collection of true horse tales is an absolute lovely tribute to a long overlooked subject. It easily demonstrates the most noble and important role that horses can miraculously play in the lives of humans. I'm sure that every horse owner can identify with the Steiger's newest book. And if you have never owned a horse it gives a wonderful insight into the oft times ignored talents and sensitivity of these noble creatures. I've enjoyed all of the Steiger storys about other animal miracles but "HORSE MIRACLES" is just especially outstanding! I just could not put it down. And, as usual it is told through the Steigers own special and creative way of writing that lets you, as the reader 'see' and 'feel' the action in each story as it happens.
Does it get any better than Brad Steiger and Sherry Hanson Steiger's "Horse Miracles"? ...'neigh'...Charming and wonderful
is the only way I know to describe their newest book!!!...I will read it over and over as it is highly inspirational! I plan to be sure to use "HORSE MIRACLES" as a top gift consideration to friends and absolutely recommend it as an outstanding book for any member of the family individually or to read aloud from on family night.

Hyras, lions, and...what the!!! O My!.......2007-05-07
The Dark Horse "Book of..." series of books are nicely packaged and come with a variety of stories, some old and thankfully not forgotten by readers and some newer mintings by authors that everyone is familiar with, and the three I've picked up so far have been excellent reads. This is not to say they are for everyone - when you buy these you are basically picking up books that are more akin to older comic titles than something new and you are picking up something with a gimmick that could be viewed as campy if you are not into things like this. I originally picked it up because I wanted to see the offering by Mike Mignola, quickly noticed the Hodgson story added to the fray and Moore-Reppion-Green addition that seemed like a pulp comic from a time long forgotten, and was happy with the buy. Hardbacked, with a motif that showcases a beautifully designed interior that makes it look like a book of monsters, I was actually impressed with the fun read that was not terribly priced.
The Book of Monsters is basically seven stories that take up 82 pages, and the read is more like enjoying a stroll through comic horror than touching on anything serious. The best offering in the illustration department is, by far, the Mike Mignola piece, with a nice little story and the classic Hellboy catch. Also note that the Hodgson piece is a story and that it has pictures accompanying it; this really is a pulp piece that is like stepping back in time.
The pieces include:
(1) I Witnessed the End of the World! Busick, writer
(2) The Hydra and the Lion: A Hellboy Adventure Mignola, writer
(3) A Tropical Horror. Hodgson, writer Gianni -art (hopefully time will never lose Hodgson's place in horror history)
(4) To Weave a Lover: A Rex Mundi Story Nelson, writer
(5) The Horror Beneath Moore/Reppion, writers
(6) Hidden: A Devil's Footprints Story. Allie, writer
(7) A Dog and his Boy Dorkin/Dyer, writers
If you want a diversion this is a good book and, if you are a Hellboy collector, this is a piece of the puzzle. It is short - 6 pages total - and most of the stories are going to be the same. The appeal is not for everyone but, if this is your kind of climate, it is a good buy.
Book Description
When Carol Chapman sold her home in Connecticut, she soon found herself on one of those roads less traveledÂ
and that has made all the difference. Arriving in Texas, she bought a ranch and created The Last Refuge, a sanctuary for unwanted dogs, cats, goats, and, most of all, for horses, mules, and donkeys that were destined for the slaughterhouse.
Meet Chipper, a chocolate Lab who not only participates in nursing horses back to health, but has also raised cats, lambs, and baby chicks. Learn how goats secretly yearn for the mountains of their ancestors and happily leap onto the hood of a car to illustrate that point. Follow Chapman around for a day and discover that itÂ's hard to get out of shape when caring for horsesÂif lugging what has to go in one end (massive buckets of water, sixty-pound bales of hay, and fifty-pound bags of grain) doesnÂ't keep a waistline trim, shoveling up piles of what comes out the other end will.
Grab a cup of coffee, pull up a hay bale, and enjoy ChapmanÂ's unconventional collection of earthy, hilarious, but always heart-warming and timeless reminiscences.

Tall Ears, Short Tales.......2004-04-08
This book is written with love, warmth and humor. I sometimes laughed, sometimes cried, but always realized the author's love of horses and her dedication to end horse slaughter. May God bless her for the work she's doing for all equine!
Highly Recommend!.......2004-01-07
Join the author on her personal journey into the hearts and souls of neglected, abused, and unwanted animals. You'll meet lots of courageous horses looking for a second chance at life, and you'll also learn a little about a delightful Chocolate Lab who mothers horses, cats, and baby chicks.
Knowledgeably written by Carol M. Chapman, owner of The Last Refuge, a sanctuary for horses and other assorted creatures no one else wanted. Tall Ears & Short Tales is a compelling and informative look at one of nature's wonderful and often terribly abused creatures - the horse - and the extremely dedicated people who rescue, rehabilitate, and provide sanctuary for them. Respect, humor, and thoughtful reflections upon the horses' point of view combine to make a thoroughly fascinating assortment of anecdotes from a wonderful writer and true animal lover.
"Must Read" for Animal Lovers!.......2003-12-23
This book is a "must read" for all animal lovers, and especially horse lovers. The author's warm style and insight into the minds of animals will draw you in and never let you go! "Horsey" people (of which I count myself one, according to the author's definition) will truly identify with the connection one feels with horses, and non-"horsey" people will get a wonderful taste of our side of the horse world.
The author's natural, relaxed attitude toward animals is further reflected in her general philosophy toward family, relationships, and life in general. She makes you want to come and visit The Last Refuge and have a chat over coffee and perhaps muck a stall or two...
Get your kleenex ready!!.......2003-12-18
I have always been concerned about animals welfare. Especially cats. When I heard about Carol's book - I was only slightly interested. Boy!!! did I change my mind. I tried to read most of it on lunch hours but geeish... my eyes got red all the time-keep your Kleenex handy. Her style of writing puts you right there with the horse and feeling what he feels. It is extremely touching.
I promise you that whether you have ever owned a horse (I have not) or rode a horse (I have only once) -- you WILL feel differently about them after this book. You will want to run and hug each and every one you see.
It is easy reading - fun and touching. Interesting and joyful.
I recommend it for all ages -- adults and children. This is a must have book!!!!! Give to your friends and relatives -- maybe we can all make a difference in horses lives and they in ours.
Sensitive and Heartwarming.......2003-12-13
This book is wonderful. The writing style is easy to follow and it touches on the feelings and wonders of living with animals in a gentle, caring way.
It's a must read for any horse or dog lover.
