Book Description
The increased computational power and software tools available to engineers have increased the use and dependence on modeling and computer simulation throughout the design process. These tools have given engineers the capability of designing highly complex systems and computer architectures that were previously unthinkable. Every complex design project, from integrated circuits, to aerospace vehicles, to industrial manufacturing processes requires these new methods. This book fulfills the essential need of system and control engineers at all levels in understanding modeling and simulation. This book, written as a true text/reference has become a standard sr./graduate level course in all EE departments worldwide and all professionals in this area are required to update their skills.
The book provides a rigorous mathematical foundation for modeling and computer simulation. It provides a comprehensive framework for modeling and simulation integrating the various simulation approaches. It covers model formulation, simulation model execution, and the model building process with its key activities model abstraction and model simplification, as well as the organization of model libraries. Emphasis of the book is in particular in integrating discrete event and continuous modeling approaches as well as a new approach for discrete event simulation of continuous processes. The book also discusses simulation execution on parallel and distributed machines and concepts for simulation model realization based on the High Level Architecture (HLA) standard of the Department of Defense.
* Presents a working foundation necessary for compliance with High Level Architecture (HLA) standards
* Provides a comprehensive framework for continuous and discrete event modeling and simulation
* Explores the mathematical foundation of simulation modeling
* Discusses system morphisms for model abstraction and simplification
* Presents a new approach to discrete event simulation of continuous processes
* Includes parallel and distributed simulation of discrete event models
* Presentation of a concept to achieve simulator interoperability in the form of the DEVS-Bus
Customer Reviews:
The best book for whom considers simulation rigorously!.......2001-07-15
This book looks somewhat difficult but I think that it is the best book for whom researchs modelling and simulation methodology. Based on mathematics, most contents of it were explained rigorously. From the origin of its 1976 version, now in the 2'nd book, DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism has been extended to cover the continuous state system as well. In addition to, the various extended versions of DEVS, such as Parallel DEVS, Real-time DEVS, Fuzzy DEVS, has been aloso dealt in it.
If you are familiar with the set-theory and the system theory (dealing with inputs and outputs) and looking for the simulation methodology from any IO system view, the book must be the best book to you.
A simulation ideas framework.......2001-05-06
This book have a bad title, must be "Theory of Modeling and Simulation with DEVS".
There are not a real Integration about Discrete Event and Continuous Complex Dynamic Systems. Only a Discret Event Systems Specification (DEVS), nothing more that DEVS. The book is anything but no visual simulation, no numerics management, no probabilities, no DAE-equations, no research operations, no object simulation, no ...
The DEVS concept born with the promise of join different formalism in the 70's (join discreet and continuous simulation), but yet the concept actually in the book is very primitive and not consider real numerical methods in only one layer (remember that many real commercial simulation software is not based in DEVS concepts. Why?, -Maybe, the DEVS concept have a rigorous and innecesary strictness in the framework concepts in modeling and simulation.)
For other hand, this book have bad thigs and good things.
Bad things:
- The algorithms presented are only fragments of pseudocode like C++ (or Java?). Where is all framework code?.
- The concepts are not in a today systemic/cibernetic vision. This is bad, because the definitions and concepts are yet of 70's. (the book is a second edition, where is the change?).
- Actually the DEVS is considered the corner stone of basic theory of discreet simulations according to autor and others, but in a book there are not real simulations for probe the theory.
- Where is THE continuous complex dynamic systems?.
- Lack of code production of real numerical and computacional methods.
The good things:
- If you don't know what is a DEVS this book is your resp.
- Is a source of excellent ideas, in special the study of Quantization and the Systems Design and Environments of M&S (IV Cap.).
Finally, the best of book is not the DEVS concepts (the book is 80% about DEVS), is the math-way how the Autor try define a basic Simulation Framework independent of the model.
Because the above, is a must have in a simulations books.
the only book available for discrete events in OO, and HLA.......2001-01-05
The first edition of this book appeared in 1976 and had only one main author, Bernard P. Zeigler, who authored other appreciated classic text books. The first edition was already a must read for the simulation community, which has been asking for an updating. The new edition is not just a re-edition with small corrections. The advances in simulation and modelling techniques helped to design a really new edition, necessary to meet the need for a theoretical foundation. Bernie Zeigler developed a unifying formalism DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification). With DEVS it is not only possible to specify discrete event systems; it is also particularly suited to integrate both continuous and discrete paradigms for modelling and simulation (discrete time & differential equations). DEVS features are also present in the systems theory.
The first theme of this book is to propose a sound methodology for the construction of complex system models based on the unifying concept of the DEVS Bus. This concept enables the mapping into DEVS of different models expressed in various formalisms such as Petri nets, Hierarchical block diagrams, cellular automata. The second theme focuses on parallel and distributed simulation of discrete event models. Distributed simulation has the potential to support the co-existence of multiple formalisms in multimodels.
I will try to depict the merits and demerits in comparison to other current and past books. First of all, being in the simulation field for ten years now, I have to cite some complementary references. Without giving an exhaustive list of all recent valuable books in the simulation field, we can find other high quality simulation text books ; for instance for continuous simulation [Cellier 1991], for general purpose simulation [Fishwick 1995] or even for more specific object-oriented simulations [Hill 1996]. However, I must admit that this Theory of Modelling and Simulation¡¨ is the only book available to help construct efficient object-oriented simulations of DEVS models on parallel and distributed environments. In addition, modelers who have to deal with HLA (High Level Architecture) compliant simulations will find in the book the reference to design integrative simulations.
The best significant features of this book are:
*The presentation of a comprehensive framework for continuous and discrete event modelling and simulation The exploration of the mathematical foundation of simulation modelling.
*The discussion of system morphisms for model abstraction and simplification *The presentation of a new approach to discrete event simulation of continuous processes. *The discussion of model credibility and interoperation * The highlighting of design concepts like such as modular and hierarchical model composition. *The presentation of a sound methodology to achieve parallel and distributed simulation models.
The reviewer only regrets the lack of public availability for DEVS platforms, despite the quotation of a web site, simulation environments (such as DEVSJAVA) are a real need to fully understand practical and theoretical aspects.
This book has multiple facets. From my teaching and scientific experience, I would say that the primary audience comprises engineers, scientists and other technical people working in academic institutions, but there are many chapters particularly well suited for students at a graduate or even undergraduate level. In my opinion, this was not the case of a previous book from the main author [Zeigler 1990] which was an excellent reference for specialists. I am now impressed by this ability to communicate at various levels. I strongly recommend this book for the reader interested in any kind of simulation and modelling, its impact on research in control will surely be recognized.

Book Description
Drawing on more than fifty interviews in both the US and the Netherlands, Wendy Chapkis captures the wide-ranging experiences of women performing erotic labor and offers a complex, multi-faceted depiction of sex work. Her expansive analytic perspective encompasses both a serious examination of international prostitution policy as well as hands-on accounts of contemporary commercial sexual practices. Scholarly, but never simply academic, this book is explicitly grounded in a concern for how competing political discourses work concretely in the world--to frame policy and define perceptions of AIDS, to mobilize women into opposing camps, to silence some agendas and to promote others.
Customer Reviews:
Realism can hurt.......2002-09-25
For anyone who hasn't enjoyed this book, all I can say is that you probably haven't met many of the women whose stories are cited in here. I have, and I find them well represented. Chapkis doesn't drown out their voices the way so many other scholars have. She begins by tracing the debates concerning sex work, which is helpful for people new to the topic. She then develops her own argument (see editor's review) and concludes with a personal story on how she discovered her own sexual pleasure. I found it informative and touching, even though I've been doing similar field work on sex workers for the past four years.
Finally, A Book That Represents Both Sides of the Debate.......2002-04-03
The intro to this book presents a clear, concise account of contemporary feminist perspectives on sex work, ranging from the adamantly anti to the decidedly pro (no pun intended). Likewise, the essays inside represent an equally broad range of views and experiences from women in nearly every facet of the sex industry, proving once and for all that sex work is neither inherently degrading nor inherently empowering.
Sensitive, provocative and fascinating.......2001-05-20
I LOVED this book! I've been in the sex trade ever since college, and found the book to be absolutely insightful and fascinating. It is NOT a "a suger-coated [sic] way of talking about prostitution", but a very accurate representation of the business--at least for those among us who choose to be empowered rather than exploited. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone considering entering the sex trade, or to anyone curious about the reality of sex work.
A REAL NO BRAINER!...........2001-03-21
I READ THIS BOOK OUT OF CURIOUSITY AND I WAS HOPING TO GET AFEW POINTERS ......WHAT A WASTE OF TIME- EVERYTHING MENTIONED IN THISBOOK IS ....
THE BOOK REALLY HAD NOTHING USEFUL OR EVEN INTERESTING,IT COVERS SOME STORIES ABOUT WHAT PROSTITUTES MAKE AND HOW THIS TYPEOF JOB AFFECTS THEIR LIVES, THE REST IS COMMON SENSE AND REGULAR ADULTKNOWLEDGE.......I HAVE TO ADMIT-THIS BOOK WAS NOT IMPRESSIVE TO SAYTHE LEAST.
THIS BOOK DESERVES ZERO STARS.......2001-03-17
This book covers feminist debates on sex issues and it covers stories about prostitution and adult entertainment. It contains many interviews, but they are all bascially the same. The issues are all the same, the interviews are all the same and the debates are all the same. The erotic labor performed by the women mentioned in this book is nothing we all don't already know about, so this book is not telling us anything new or even interesting. I didn't get anything useful out of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2002-03-29
This book is wonderful. It was what kinda got me started into the research of Chinese characters and such. Until I read this book I never knew how beautiful and interesting and deep the chinese character is. The stories and describtions just captivate you. The in depth design of every single character and the story behind it is very interesting and fascinating. Though not as long as I would have hoped, I reccomend it.
Beautifully explains the origins of Chinese characters.......2001-02-21
If you only have the time and patience to learn forty Chinese characters in your lifetime, you should learn the ones in this book. Concepts such as "spirit", "benevolence", "harmony", "loyalty", and "wisdom" characterize so much of traditional Chinese thought and culture. The authors illustrate each of these characters with beautiful brush and ink calligraphy on rice paper background. There is a short explanation accompanying each character telling why it is written just so. For example the strokes making up the character "love" show us that the word means "breathing into the heart with a gracious motion". The character "enlightenment" shows the two components "sun" and "moon" which together light the world. Students who wish to practise writing these characters can follow the useful stroke order guide next to the explanations. This is a beautiful gift for the student or scholar, or just for those who appreciate Chinese culture.
Spirit of the Chinese Character.......2001-01-22
This beautifully designed book is a little gem. There is a clear breadth of understanding of Chinese culture and language. The text is eloquent and if you are learning to write Chinese characters, the stroke-by-stroke instructions make it seem easy and less intimidating.
good for learning to draw about 40 characters.......2000-01-02
great for learning a limited number of characters - 40. step by step illustration to create each character in the order they should be formed. also a brief description of the concept/meaning for each.
The book gave some cool ides for tatoos........1999-04-21
I found the book to be a great rep. of what chinese art is like. The meaning are like words we want to hve written know you can write they with a different look to keep people guessing. I now have 4 tatoos that look and mean something cool.

StarWarsEpisode1Book.......2005-10-02
My son enjoyed this book. It was an easy read for a 7 year old, with nice pictures and interesting facts. Probably perfect for a 5 or 6 year old.
Wonderful, intelligent book for the very young andall others.......2000-08-20
This is just a terrific storybook. After a year, it is still one of my 3 year old niece's favorites.
The graphic design is sophisticated and elegant, and the book introduces young children to the Star Wars universe with great style. It's intelligent, a quality missing in so many children's movie tie-in books. The presentation of the Jedi is age-appropriate but will also appeal to much older readers.
Three cheers for Random House and Lucas Books!
Cute as a bug!.......1999-12-08
Got a grown-up Qui-Gon fan with a sense of humor who needs a stocking stuffer? This'll do nicely. It's got pretty pictures and stickers. And as every thinking being knows, stickers make *everything* better! ^_^
Excellent for young children.......1999-07-21
As a special education teacher working to stimulate children with reading differences/difficulties, I am always looking for highly motivating, well-illustrated, well-written books. This book is all three, plus it has the advantage of appealing, in its subject material, not just to the younger readers (grades 1-4), but to those in grades 5-12 (yes, 12!) as well. I was able to do many interesting activities for boys and girls with learning differences, using materials based on Episodes 4, 5, and 6. So far, the story/activity books from Episode I, including this one and the three others in the four-book series, are just as carefully done, with the same potential for entrancing and motivating the low-level reader. (And I, a high-level reader, also think they are simply super for reading to great-grandchildren or to myself.) The Star Wars materials, this story in particular, offer many opportunities to develop high-level critical thinking skills, which these students usually have in abundance, and to stimulate writing and vocabulary skills. Even a short book like this one offers the opportunity to discuss acceptable behaviors, to improve choice-making, and to define personal goals. Thank you, George Lucas, Marc Cerasini and Random House, for making solid-gold books like this available!

A tiny dinosaur with a feisty attitude marches across the wilderness defending the friendly and furry from the mean and hungry. Told entirely without words, the stories highlight the amazingly detailed art and visual storytelling genius of creator Masashi Tanaka. An instant sensation in Japan where these comics adventures first appeared.,
Gon is being reprinted in America for the first time.

Pint-Sized Tyrannosaur Stars In Three Unforgettable Tales.......2005-09-16
This is the book that introduced Gon - world's last dinosaur, one foot tall midget tyrannosaur, alternately playful and cuddly or as ferocious as an enraged Hulk when need be - to North American audiences. Featuring a different artistic style (especially in the first story, "Gon Eats And Sleeps") than the later Gon volumes but no less phenomenal. In the back of the book are photorealistic drawings of the real-life species depicted in the three tales - so photorealistic, in fact, that at first I thought they were actual black-and-white photographs. That's how great the art is.
"Gon Eats And Sleeps" is possibly the most essential tale in understanding this enigmatic little dinosaur. Readers who start with a subsequent volume may well ask themselves 'why does he keep tormenting that poor bear so?' In this tale we see the beginning of the rivalry between these two titans, a rivalry it seems the Bear is always destined to come up with the short end of the stick on. Basically, Gon takes great umbrage when a large grizzly bear chases a smaller one off a catch of fish the smaller bear has caught. And thus the lifelong animosity begins, an animosity that notably doesn't extend to other bears, just this one, 'The Bear'.
It isn't always spelled out as clearly in subsequent volumes, but when Gon goes on the offensive against The bear or some other creature, it seems obvious there is some past transgression (usually directed against one of Gon's small, defenceless animal friends, it seems)that has sparked the blood feud. Ferocious but valiant, Gon marches through life enjoying the world and defending the weak with his own sense of justice, and while I don't feel the little guy is sadistic or mean he sure can be an intimdating force. As I noted in doing a writeup on "Gon Color Spectacular" Gon never kills his foes and they seldom are worse off than a few bruises and scratches; too much serious carnage would definately ruin the charm and tone of the series.
The second tale, "Gon Learns To Fly" is one of the most hilarious tales in the Gon pantheon and simply has to be seen to be believed. Words cannot do this an adequate description, but talk about refusing to admit defeat! And in "Gon Glares" - which certainly boasts some of the most, er, unique visual imagery ever captured on paper through either pen or photo, we see that even in defending his circle of friends Gon is not without compassion for his predatory adversaries. A perfect ending to a perfect book; a perfect start to a whole series of unforgettable Gon adventures!
Gon.......2002-10-08
One of the best manga's of all time. Gon is loved greatly by children and many adults in Japan and has recently come to America! This is a great buy and I suggest looking into the entire series. I have been an anime/manga fan for 9years now, and I can confidently say you won't be disappointed with this buy.
Enter the Dino Mind.......2002-09-21
Gon is, by and far, an enjoyable journey through the greatly unexplored world of nature and is introduced to us in the most unlikely of ways. Here, amidst an untamed world, we meet the most unlikely of travelers, that of a two-foot-tall unstoppable force that just happens to be one of the cutest/aggressive characters ever to grace a storyline, as he looks for fun, adventure, and something to eat. This book is where the adventures of Gon, the adorable dinosaur with a voracious appetite for exploration/competetion, begins, introduced to us in short story forums. We join Masashi Tanaka as he relays this through silent adventure after silent adventure, speaking wheels through expressions and a flurry of emotive responses instead of simple spurts of meaningless dialog.
Here, Gon first battles and then humiliates an otherwise gargantuan bear that otherwise seems to dominate the wilderness, ends up flying with the aid of a few eagles after a strange little adventure in feeding/protecting some little ones, torments a dingo looking for some easy pickings, fights alongside some wolf cubs he seems somewhat attracted to, lives amongst the penguins, and builds himself a mansion that makes even the beavers enviously agitated.
If you've never had the opportunity to check this out, I would recommend it highly. The art style, the character itself, and the fact that I've never found myself bored throughout five books filled with him, says that Gon is a force to be reckoned with.
Great artistic skills and dynamic imagery.......1998-03-28
You. Yes, you. Get this book. This is the first release from Masashi Tanaka and what a release it is ! It is simply the best artwork I have ever seen in comic books, or anywhere else for that matter. Small and fierce Gon kicks butt!
He's Gon, but he'll be back!.......1997-01-19
For those of you that liked jurassic park, Bambi and 101 dalmations, but hate Barney, Gon is for you. Gon is a VERY small dinosaur from a bygone age, he has no problems being the last dinosaur, and seems to enjoy the arrogance of his seeming indestructability. He is a staunch defender of the downtrodden and the helpless, as well as his lunch. The art is fantastic, the stories (no words) flow well and are completely enjoyable

The real thing........2000-04-26
In keeping with their tradition of providing the highest quality books on shamanism the International Society for Shamanistic Research (ISTOR) has produced another fascinating volume of essays. This time the collection consists of twenty-four essays focused on the theme of shamanic ritual and the performing arts. Although the essays were originally talks given at the second conference of ISTOR celebrated in 1993 in Budapest, Hungary, they are far from the dull academic treatises that one might expect from such a scholarly venue. Quite the contrary, you will find them uniformly well written and entertaining, at times even controversial, for instance when the question of the shaman's'role as 'performer' is raised and debated by the author Jonathan Horowitz in his discussion of "The Absence of 'Performance' in the Shamanic Rite'. Among my other favorites were the discussion by Eleanor Ott of "Ethnics and the Neo-Shamanism", a thought-provoking foray into the post-modern world of shamanic performance and healing ceremonies; Carla Corradi Musi's discussion of the shaman-actor in the Finno-Ugric area in relationship to ritual theatre; and Isabel's Horváth's comparison of a set of Hungarian and Turkic folktales.
And then I can't help mentioning the fact that the collection brings together what are unquestionably essays from the best and the brightest among those dedicated to bringing authentic ethnographic materials to the attention of the reading public. For example, anyone interested in gaining an in-depth understanding traditional shamanism will want to examine Tae-gon Kim's introductory chapter on the symbolic Ur-meaning of shamanism and the performing arts along with Robert Hamayon's contribution concerning 'trance' ecstasy and related concepts in the study of shamanism. For anyone with a flare for ethnomusicology the essay by Du Yaxiong comparing ancient Hungarian folk songs and the shamanic songs of the minorities of North China is a must read along with Liu Gui-teng's remarkable discussion of the intricacies of the musical instruments used in Manchurian shamanic sacrificial rituals. Finally, I can't omit mentioning the essays by other stellar figures in shamanic studies such as Ake Hulthkranz on the shaman in myths and folktales as well as the contributions of Marjorie Mandelstam Balzer on the poetry of shamanism and Julia Pentikäinen on the reawakening of shamanism in the contemporary north, Siberia, along with the essay by the co-editor of the volume Mihály Hoppál dealing with the relationship between performing shamanism and certain manifestations of the same in Siberian rock art. These are essays that are so filled with insights you will inevitably go back to read many of them more than once. In closing, I'd recommend this volume very highly not only because of the variety and depth of the essays in it, but also because it gives you an opportunity to get to know many of the major investigators in the field, the real experts on traditional shamanism, as well as to tune into some of the latest controversies in the field. Having said that, I would ask you to keep in mind that many of the authors whose contributions are included in the book have also written their own books or edited other collections of essay on shamanism. In short, this book lets you get to know some of the major experts in this emerging field.

Customer Reviews:
animation awsome!.......2000-11-20
The animation in this book is realy well done and very fun to read. This book would be great for any comic book lover, looking for a great book with an awsome art style and wonderfull design. However This book does not have realy any deap story line(or any?)It just plainly goes through the adventure of gon as he protects nature.
Bottom line:very fun to read and is good for people who can enjoy the artistic talent of this book,Bad for people who want something deep.

Customer Reviews:
Giants Underground.......2002-09-21
Gon, the indestructible two-foot-tall dinosaur nomad created by Masashi Tanaka, finds himself deviating from the "norm," if there is truly something normal about Gon's adventures, in Gon Underground. It not only pits Gon in and against a new surrounding, but it also puts him into something else that is refreshingly abnormal, that of a full-length storyline with more interconnection than simply the main character. This helps in many ways because it gives more time to develop those characters that would otherwise been seen only briefly, helping you to feel their plights and laugh along at the futility of their dealings with the over-anxious little dinosaur.
The gist of this tale (without spoiling it):
While staring into an anthill and watching its innerworkings, Gon finds himself intrigued by the prospective of going underground and promptly digs up the anthill. Saddened to find that it ends so soon, Gon goes looking for something else to sate his newfound burrowing curiosity and locates it in the form of prairie dog burrows. After playing here for a time and psychologically tormenting some of the little guy's predators, an earthquake hits and Gon finds himself elsewhere, in a subterranean world filled with giant isopeta, giant mayflies, hog bats, enormous pill-bugs, huge toads, and his greatest adversary, the king spider! Still, this odd world has never seen anything like Gon and vice-versa, so its off to explore and to, of course, cause a little trouble.
I've seen it stated that Gon, a silent spectator delving into a wordless world, is something for the artlover only because it has no story. Well, I'd have to say that this couldn't be further from the truth. Silence, whether in moving picture or in that of a still, can weave a tale though textures, through expression, and through the gist of something different, like the curiosity of a dinosaur with nothing to fear from life. This is what Gon does in an almost innocent fashion, something that should be checked out by any and everyone.
The anti-Barney's journey to the Center of the Earth........2001-06-29
For those of you who suffer nervous twitching when you hear the word 'dinosaur,' run screaming when you encounter the color purple, and have nightmares featuring a soundtrack from 'This Old Man,' take heart. The cure for Barney has arrived: he's ruthless, he's unstoppable, and piranhas dive for cover when they see him coming. And he's only two feet tall.
Masashi Tanaka returns us to the world of Gon, this time with a stretch of imagination that takes him into a subterranean, book-length adventure. As with all of the Gon books, this one is meticulously and beautifully drawn; the artwork is incredible, penned with a loving attention to detail that makes this a feast for the eyes. For those who haven't encountered Gon before, never fear. There are no words to boggle non-Japanese speakers. All characters are animals (or insect), and all their emotions are easily understandable, thanks to the artist's deft hand. Gon may be a dinosaur bordering on cute, but he's no cuddly Barney; he has an attitude that won't quit, and the single-minded ferocity of a Sherman Tank. This is a book for all ages, full of whimsy, humor, and more than its fair share of charm.
Unlike the other Gon stories, this one spins several of its minor characters out of pure imagination. Some of the weird and wonderful life forms that scuttle through the pages have no resemblance to real creatures -- and "scuttle" is the operative word here. Tanaka's fabulous artistic skill brings to life all the creepy-crawlies that you can imagine with an attention to realism that will definitely disconcert those who are faint of heart.
At 166 pages, this is the longest Gon story ever, and every page is a gem. This is a must have for any Gon collector, Gon's first feature-length saga. Those who have never encountered Gon might find a better feel for the little dinosaur's normal life by trying out a different Gon book, but they can't go wrong getting this one, instead.
Gon is back!.......2000-03-31
Gon the irrepressible little orange dinosaur returns for another adventure. This time Gon teams up with a coyote, a prarie dog, a bat, and an ant. They do battle with a giant spider, and end up on the other side of the world. Dont be thrown off by the fact that this book has no words or sounds, it is not to be missed! Whether you're a Manga fan, an Art connaissuer, or just want a good story, This book is for you!
