4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Spider-Man, while supposed to be younger here, of course, almost looks like you took McFarlane's version and locked him in a cupboard for 2 weeks and didn't let him eat.

Plenty of big eyes for the young manga-like loving kiddies too, seems to have worked.

Some fun bits, Gwen Stacy seems to have stepped out of a gang, and they threw in a Jenny Sparks joke.

Kraven the Crocodile Hunter, and the dacking of Doc Ock.

Overall, not too bad, but not a style I like much.

5 out of 5 stars Doc Ock + Kraven= Brilliant!.......2005-07-13

This review is for Ultimate Spider-Man vol. 3 paperback edition: Double Trouble

Doctor Octopus has long been one of Spider-Man's greatest villains, and this volume sees his entrance into the Ultimates world. Horribly disfigured after his accident in Osborn lab's in volume one, Otto Octavius insane and out for blood. Add into the mix, Kraven, who fancies himself the world's ultimate hunter, and his new prey is Spider-Man.

Once again, Bendis bring his best game when scripting this book. The writing is wonderful, the characters very real and very human. His take on Gwen Stacy is very unlike mainstream Gwen Stacy but the result is a very likable character. His approach to Mary Jane and Peter's relationship is also very teenage and appealing.

Bagley and Thibert's pencils are nice, and appropriate to the book, though the character's are a little wide eyed at times, and their take on Doc Ock's body didn't mesh with my personal image of the character.

This is the perfect Ultimate Spider-Man graphic to buy for someone who has seen Spider-Man 2 and wants to read a comic with Doc Ock in it. This book is also appropriate for all ages and for comic collectors and newcomers alike.

This volume reprints Ultimate Spider-Man #14-21. Highest recommendations!

5 out of 5 stars In Love With Comics Again.......2003-09-11

The Ultimate Spider-Man series is the best thing that has happened to comics in a long time. I love what Bendis and the crew have done with my favorite web-slinger. I get done reading a few pages and just smile. The artwork in this series is pure and clean. I can't see any way to make it any better except to keep the issues coming. Gwen was always the one I wanted for Pete, even though MJ is the best. I hope this time around Gwen is here to stay.

2 out of 5 stars ugh.......2003-08-28

I started loosing interst in the newer spider man books after this comic, i found a disturbance with the second one that was more artist than story but volume 3's story is cheezy but spider man is still the man, even if they try to change his persona and twist the story.

5 out of 5 stars Spider-Man takes on Doctor Octopus and Kraven the Hunter.......2003-04-05

Just when I thought the game plan of the "Ultimate Spider-Man" with regards to the love life of his alter-ego Peter Parker was to go directly to Mary Jane Watson, passing Betty Bryant and Gwen Stacy, when scribe Brian Michael Bendis drops the later into the action. This version of Gwen is big on the mascara and perfectly willing to pull a switchblade on a bully, both of which are completely valid reasons for Peter to have his eyes pop out of his head when he looks at her. Not even her police Captain father can reign in this blonde tornado.

At this point in the comic book the stage is merely being set for the impending love triangle, but I have to tell you that what is happening here is clearly a take off on "Dawson's Creek." Seriously. Peter is Dawson, Mary Jane is Joey, and Gwen is Jen (No, Flash is not Pacey; Kong is closer to being Pacey than Flash, but Peter Parker does not have a friend, which means Harry is not Pacey either). This should prove to be interesting, especially given that Mary Jane already know's Peter's big secret. But at this point the main problem is that Aunt May has an over inflated opinion about her nephew's love life. Yes, things might actually be worse for our hero this time around.

The title of "Double Trouble" has to do with the fact that in this collection of "Ultimate Spider-Man" #14-21, Spider-Man has not one but two villains after him (I was going to say two super villains, but that would not be the case). The new and improved bad guys this time around are Doctor Octopus, who has come out of his coma to discover his tentacles are fused to his skin, and Kraven the Hunter, who is now a reality television star from Down Under. Clearly, the more you know about the original Spider-Man comics and his various foes the more you will enjoy Bendis's refinements and provocative changes. At the end of this collection Spider-Man enjoys his biggest moment in the sun since the spider bit him, which quickly follows with a particularly low moment for Peter. Even when we think we know the rules of the game, Bendis continues to surprise us.

"Double Trouble" is the third trade paperback collection of "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics, which re-imagines the webhead as a younger Peter Parker trying to learn the ropes of being a superhero. But for those who read the first couple hundred issues of the original "Amazing Spider-Man" this is a hyper retelling of the tale. Forget all the ... superheroes Spidey had to fight with; this time around the focus is on the best and the baddest. The biggest difference between these first 21 issues of "Ultimate Spider-Man" and the original comic is that a single issue is no longer a complete story; it takes eight issues for the conflict between Spidey and Doc Ock to develop and be resolved. Consequently, we have the rather paradoxical fact that things are happening much faster for Spider-Man in this retelling of the tale while taking longer to develop. I continue to be impressed by this brilliant "re-imagining," which is drawn by Mark Bagley with inks by Art Thibert and Erik Benson.

This is such a cute book! It has so many of those rhyming double words that we use everyday. It's a very fun read aloud. I teach second grade and my students just love it. The words are in a bigger print, so they love to try and read along. Sure to bring smiles and giggles to everyone!

You will be reading in circles (literally). I recommend this book to families who enjoy a silly book.

I just read Double Trouble in Walla Walla to a class of third graders last week and they loved the play on words, especially the page where the words go around in a circle. Also, the illustrations are fun and add to the word play. I highly recommend this book for children from preschool to third grade.

I purchased this book after my child brought it home from the school library. It mentions just about all the silly words that we use in our everyday use, such as: chit-chat, nitty- gritty, etc. I was astonished at just how many we use. The story has you reading them together and its fun to try and read them fast. Any child of any age would love it. I got two extra for my sister and brother's kids. enjoy!

    Book Description

In June of 1992, when all the polls showed that Bill Clinton didn't have a chance, he took his saxophone onto the Arsenio Hall show, put on dark glasses, and blew "Heartbreak Hotel." Greil Marcus, one of America's most imaginative and insightful popular culture critics, was the first to name this as the moment that turned Clinton's campaign around-and to make sense of why. Double Trouble draws on articles Marcus published from 1992 to 2000 to explore the remarkable and illuminating kinship between Bill Clinton and Elvis Presley-and, moreover, to explore how culture is made and shared in today's America and how, through culture, people remake themselves.Double Trouble is a unique and essential book about the final years of the twentieth century. This edition also includes a new essay Marcus wrote just before the 2000 presidential election: an eerily prescient piece that looks forward to two very different futures for ex-President Bill Clinton.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Connecting the dots in 20th century pop culture.......2001-10-16

Although his subject matter (from the promised Clinton/Elvis thing to Kurt Cobain, Bob Dylan, Whitewater and more) is diverse and entertaining, Marcus takes an academic tone that sometimes failed to draw me in.

Still, he's well versed in politics and pop culture, and able to draw thought-provoking connections between seemingly disparate topics. Marcus is master of the insightful bizarre trivia detail - like the fact that Clinton-accuser Paula Jones' husband played the ghost of Elvis in the 1989 movie "Mystery Train". Like music, sometimes it feels forced, and sometimes it all comes together.

As someone who remembers Cobain much more clearly than Elvis, I found the book was a great crash course in some of the themes that influenced both today's rock stars and politicians.

As rock/pop culture criticism, it actually makes an interesting companion piece for the Lester Bangs anthology I just finished reading ("Psychotic Reactions & Carburator Dung" - interestingly enough, it was edited by Marcus, Bangs' former Creem cohort). Except that Bangs puts a lot more passion into his rants, while Marcus seems determined to stand back and make observations. Ultimately, that tone left me standing on the sidelines as well.

    3 out of 5 stars Clinton As Elvis? I Don't Think So........2001-06-09

In Double Trouble: Bill Clinton And Elvis Presley In A Land Of No Alternatives, Greil Marcus examines a metaphor suggested by, among others, filmmaker Oliver Stone and New York Times columnist Frank Rich: Bill Clinton as Elvis Presley. Woven in & out of this central thread are the stories of other Americans living in the spotlight during the Clinton years: among them, Bob Dylan, Kurt Cobain, Allen Ginsberg, and Hillary Clinton. It's an interesting idea, and certainly (on the face of it, at least) no less tenable a springboard for a book than the theses that any of Marcus' other books are based on. There's only one small problem: it doesn't wash.

The quality of Marcus' writing isn't an issue here: stylistically, I'd put him up against anyone working today, and his erudition remains astonishing (reading him, I frequently find myself asking: "Is there a book this guy HASN'T read? A piece of music he HASN'T heard?"). Nor is it the individual chapters: many of them are great - opening up vistas in music, films, and politics you hadn't imagined were there.

No, the difficulty lies in Marcus' conclusion: simply put, I find the notion that Clinton approached Elvis Presley as a force for cultural liberation absurd. Clinton is obviously a very intelligent man and was an extraordinarily charismatic leader, but at the end of the day, he was just another politican. Elvis Presley broke - exploded - American culture in half. I don't think Clinton, as either president or cultural leader, can make a claim half so big.

5 out of 5 stars bringing up the average.......2000-09-28

This book should probably rate somewhere around 3 or 4 stars. It isn't Marcus's best--that would be MYSTERY TRAIN or LIPSTICK TRACES--but anything by this fine critic is a whole lot better than the average nonfiction tripe out there (e.g., another cash cow "case" against one or both of the Clintons).

Granted, the connection between Elvis and BC is no stronger than the connection between, well, me and Mahatma Gandhi, but if you hold a magnifiying glass up close enough to a watermelon and squint your eyes, you can see an image of the Virgin Mary. And a number of pieces collected under this misleading title are not concerned, even in a Marcusian "world in a leaf of grass" way, with either Elvis or Clinton.

Having said this, no one understands the relationship between rock and American culture, past and present, better than Marcus. He is always wise, trenchant, and--though sometimes overly mystifying--strongly moral. As I read Marcus I always think, "This guy's on my side; he's saying what I would like to say if I could think of the right words." This applies to a lesser Marcus work (like this one) as well as the major ones (and he's about due for one sometime soon).

    1 out of 5 stars Sadly, Enough's Enough.......2000-09-09

This is the ultimate Greil Marcus parody, by the master himself. Ideas like a solemn correlation between an Elvis Presley postage stamp and Clinton's election are announced without even a smirk. Coming next: KNOCKED OUT LOADED: FINDING EVIDENCE OF ELVIS AND DYLAN IN EVERYTHING AFTER FALLING DOWN AND HITTING MY HEAD.

    3 out of 5 stars middling.......2000-08-30

once again Marcus is at it again. this is a relatively thought provoking study which interweaves all his favourite topics. If you like his style of writing, I'm sure you'll get a lot out of this. Anyone who has read some postmodern fiction won't find any remarkable ideas here. I preferred Invisible Republic.

          Book Description

          J. Phillip Thompson III, an insider in the Dinkins administration, provides the first in-depth look at how the black mayors of America's major cities achieve social change. Black constituents naturally look to black mayors to effect great change for the poor, but the reality of the situation is complicated. Thompson argues that African-American mayors, legislators, and political activists need to more effectively challenge opinions and public policies supported by the white public and encourage greater political inclusion and open political discourse within black communities. Only by unveiling painful internal oppresssions and exclusions within black politics will the black community's power increase, and compel similar unveilings in the broader interracial conversation about the problems of the urban poor. Tracing the historical development and contemporary practice of black mayoral politics, this is a fascinating study of the motivations of black politicians, competing ideologies in the black community and the inner dynamics of urban social change.

4 out of 5 stars Double Trouble: Excellent Book .......2006-06-12

Double Trouble should be required reading in any academic study of politics, as well as by anyone remotely involved in the political process (community/grassroots organizations, pastors, union leaders, candidates, campaign staff, etc).

The book gives a snapshot of what has been and a blueprint for what can be when a community and its elected leadership work together.

The conventional wisdom of the past was that if we (Blacks) had a seat at the table...or God forbid if we had the seat at the head of the table(the HNIC)...we could somehow right some of the injustices done in and to our communities almost at will.

Author, J. Phillip Thompson, presents an effective and compelling analysis of the realities of the "political game," especially the limitations on Black Mayors and in particular, Black Mayors who want to be re-elected (his analysis can also be applied to most, if not all, Black elected officials). The dilemna is "double trouble" because Black politicians get it from both sides- you're darned if you do and darned if you don't.

The author's call for "deep pluralism" is largely academic and seems more of an insertion into the larger debate of how Black Mayors can provide effective representation within the capitalist structure of politics.

I have already highly recommended the book to all of my political colleagues and friends.

5 out of 5 stars Praise for Double Trouble.......2006-03-22

"It is, quite simply, impossible to understand the evolution of the racial foundations of urban politics--and, indeed, all of contemporary urban politics in America--without reading Double Trouble." -- David N. Dinkins, 106th Mayor of New York City

"Double Trouble's transformative and incisive critique challenges conventional wisdom from both the right and left: Forgo blind faith in identity politics, overcome the myth of expert racelessness and re-engage the urban poor in revitalizing not only our cities but also our democracy." -- Lani Guinier, co-author of The Miner's Canary

"J. Phillip Thompson's Double Trouble is an outstanding piece of scholarship that combines astute analysis of race and politics in America's cities with deep reflections on the theory and practice of democracy in the United States. It has much to offer not only students of American politics, but also those who are concerned about how deliberative democracy and pluralism works, or should work, in the nation's cities." -- Michael Dawson, author of Behind the Mule and Black Visions

"Thompson provides an original and compelling way to think about the possibilities inherent in urban politics. His call for deep democracy shows why broad civic engagement in the black community is a necessary first step in creating a genuinely new politics in America." -- Margaret Weir, Professor of Political Science and Sociology, University of California, Berkeley

"Double Trouble brilliantly and bravely dissects the central paradox facing black mayors: pushing too hard for racial justice will cost the support of white elites, while pushing too little will further alienate black voters. The compelling portrait of the Dinkins administration is the best description now available of this paradox in operation. This is a path-breaking book." -- John Mollenkopf, author of The Contested City

"This theoretically bold and analytically brilliant book is an immediate classic. Double Trouble simultaneously exposes the vacuity of the liberal retreat from race and the savagery of the conservative manipulation of race. Anyone concerned with what politics and public policy can do to reduce inequality and to heal racial frictions must consider Thompson's indictment of both routine party politics and of black politics and heed his hopeful prescription for moving beyond the current stalemate." -- Lawrence D. Bobo, Professor of Sociology, Stanford University
