Book Description
Over the last ten years, the ARM architecture has become one of the most pervasive architectures in the world, with more than 2 billion ARM-based processors embedded in products ranging from cell phones to automotive braking systems. A world-wide community of ARM developers in semiconductor and product design companies includes software developers, system designers and hardware engineers. To date no book has directly addressed their need to develop the system and software for an ARM-based system. This text fills that gap.
This book provides a comprehensive description of the operation of the ARM core from a developers perspective with a clear emphasis on software. It demonstrates not only how to write efficient ARM software in C and assembly but also how to optimize code. Example code throughout the book can be integrated into commercial products or used as templates to enable quick creation of productive software.
The book covers both the ARM and Thumb instruction sets, covers Intel's XScale Processors, outlines distinctions among the versions of the ARM architecture, demonstrates how to implement DSP algorithms, explains exception and interrupt handling, describes the cache technologies that surround the ARM cores as well as the most efficient memory management techniques. A final chapter looks forward to the future of the ARM architecture considering ARMv6, the latest change to the instruction set, which has been designed to improve the DSP and media processing capabilities of the architecture.
* No other book describes the ARM core from a system and software perspective.
* Author team combines extensive ARM software engineering experience with an in-depth knowledge of ARM developer needs.
* Practical, executable code is fully explained in the book and available on the publisher's Website.
* Includes a simple embedded operating system.

A System Software Engineer.......2007-04-10
This is the best book I've seen for the ARM series of processors. I have developed with many processors, on and off the Job and am now planning to develop for the ARM7 and ARM9 processors; particularly the AT91 and the AT91SAM7 series of processors by ATMEL. Base on the processors' hardware specs they are perfect for the small time developer. But, when looking the ARM's instruction set, it appears that programming them requires a steep learning curve.
This book will easily reduce my learning curve, at the very least, by more than half. It is clear, comprehensive, and to the point.
In a world that has strict requiresments on performance, power, as well as development time, a developer has to ARM himself. This book will show you how to do just that.
Excellent for a beginner.......2007-03-13
You know C, you know pointers, you know how to program. But what you need is something to teach you more about creating firmware applications. How to actually make something work! What actually goes on inside this black-box that we call the ARM core? How do you make it do some simple DSP?
There should be a course in every college that basically teaches the information contained in this book!
Very Satisfied.......2007-03-09
Product came in faster than expected and it was in new, excellent condition.
extremely useful.......2006-04-14
This book covers many aspects of programming the ARM familiy, including a surprisingly thorough discussion on fixed-point DSP computation.
Having come from another architecture, this book really got me going on ARM. It complements the documentation manufacturers usually provide for their ARM chips in that it covers the ARM core much more in-depth.
The book discusses everything from register usage to memory management units. If you want to become an expert programmer in C/Assembly on ARM systems, you must buy this book.
Also included is a nice comparison of the ARM and Gnu assembler directives, which came in handy when I converted an ARM assembly file to the Gnu syntax.
If your company will buy it for you, get it.......2005-03-15
In the ARM tradition of charging for everything, the firmware guide by Sloss is easy to read, and comprehensive up to ARM10/StrongARM XScale/926/940. That said, the book looks like the notes from a firmware lecture delivered by an Arm Apps engineer. The book is strongest in coverage of MMU and cache, but weak on ARM11 (1136 only and as a final chapter) and essentially non-existent in Jazelle coverage. Nice features are the toy RTOS which appears early at reappears with more features (memory protection, and MMU, for example). That this book is so quickly out of date brings the point that MDR bulleted last year, that the ARM family needs birth control but that is a topic for another discussion. Sloss' book has 'non-commercial license' for all the sourcecode. huh? Regarding this book, Freescale for example publishes equivalent information (old ESS manuals) in the 860/8260 training manuals for free, on their website. If your company pays for your books, by all means have them get the sloss book for you it makes a great read on the john, but if you are a student or independent developer, you would be as well served by studying the ARM ARM and applicable ARM source code for U-Boot, Redboot and the L4 microkernel, or even Ed Sutter's book, with the added benefit that you would have a license to use the code in your project.

As a youth of 18, Ernest Hemingway was eager to fight in the Great War. Poor vision kept him out of the army, so he joined the ambulance corps instead and was sent to France. Then he transferred to Italy where he became the first American wounded in that country during World War I. Hemingway came out of the European battlefields with a medal for valor and a wealth of experience that he would, 10 years later, spin into literary gold with A Farewell to Arms. This is the story of Lieutenant Henry, an American, and Catherine Barkley, a British nurse. The two meet in Italy, and almost immediately Hemingway sets up the central tension of the novel: the tenuous nature of love in a time of war. During their first encounter, Catherine tells Henry about her fiancé of eight years who had been killed the year before in the Somme. Explaining why she hadn't married him, she says she was afraid marriage would be bad for him, then admits:
I wanted to do something for him. You see, I didn't care about the other thing and he could have had it all. He could have had anything he wanted if I would have known. I would have married him or anything. I know all about it now. But then he wanted to go to war and I didn't know.
The two begin an affair, with Henry quite convinced that he "did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her. This was a game, like bridge, in which you said things instead of playing cards." Soon enough, however, the game turns serious for both of them and ultimately Henry ends up deserting to be with Catherine.
Hemingway was not known for either unbridled optimism or happy endings, and A Farewell to Arms, like his other novels (For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Sun Also Rises, and To Have and Have Not), offers neither. What it does provide is an unblinking portrayal of men and women behaving with grace under pressure, both physical and psychological, and somehow finding the courage to go on in the face of certain loss. --Alix Wilber
Book Description
The best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Hemingway's frank portrayal of the love between Lieutenant Henry and Catherine Barkley, caught in the inexorable sweep of war, glows with an intensity unrivaled in modern literature, while his description of the German attack on Caporetto -- of lines of fired men marching in the rain, hungry, weary, and demoralized -- is one of the greatest moments in literary history. A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, A Farewell to Arms, written when he was 30 years old, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway.

A Soap Opera.......2007-09-23
I re-read this recently. I don't know why. I guess a friend of mind is into Hemingway. Here's what I found: this seminal work of the American 20th century fiction reads like a chick flick or soap opera, especially the rather embarrasingly overwrought last chapter.
A classic!.......2007-08-27
I read this book in high school and I fell in love. This book has it all: adventure, love, and a incredibly tragic ending. This is the type of book that should be required reading in schools!
Brilliant.......2007-08-13
At first I was not a fan of Hemmingway's writing style but the story overpowered whatever problems I had. Wonderful depictions of war and love. Emotional when you least expect it. An amazing journey. Must Read Classic.
"I thought she might be a little crazy".......2007-07-26
The only justification for WWI, if there is one, is that it serves as a great backdrop for this marvelous novel, the story of wounded ambulance driver Frederick Henry and his nurse -lover Catherine Barkley as they try to survive that ignoble war (which began with dancing in the streets of Vienna and ended in the pointless slaughter of millions. Remember?). Early in the book, Frederick says of Catherine, "I thought she might be a little crazy." Well, Yeah! Is it any wonder considering she has treated about a thousand casualties with injuries ranging from self-inflicted foot wounds to splintered limbs and assorted other dripping war wounds? Together they make the only sane decision they can make under the circumstances: they escape to neutral Switzerland where they manage to make a life for themselves, away from the war--but never really free from its underlying curse. Out of a time when kings and keisers (not renegade vice presidents) made war, Hemingway, the master of macho angst, creates the premier anti-war novel. If only Bush had been reading it to the kids in Sarasota the morning of 911 instead of the lamb book, what a different world it might be today...
Classic.......2007-06-27
A Farewell to Arms is considered a "classic" of American literature. And rightly so. This novel is an excellent portrayal of the horrors of war (World War I in particular), in which the main protagonist, Frederic Henry, becomes involved in an ambiguously "loving" relationship with an English nurse named Catherine Barkley. Not to spoil any important plot elements, let's just say that their relationship ends...weirdly (and, in a sense, disturbingly) and leaves the reader feeling a million feelings at once (sadness, confusion, contemplativeness, reflectiveness, etc.).
Again, Hemingway pulls the reader in with his minimalist approach and his understatement (sometimes, incredibly "under"). The book's plot basically involves Henry's time spent on the Italian front that is being challenged, at the beginning of the book, by the Austrians, and by the end of the book, by the Germans. Henry experiences every nuance of war: from intense hunger and starvation, to the anxiety of escaping death, to the death of a comrade, to injury to himself.
Overall, the book as a war novel is excellent, as a love story: excellent, and as a classic in American literature: legendary.

Great book - but Amazon's price is outrageous.......2007-07-22
This is definitely a book to have if you own an AR15-type rifle, but why is Amazon's listed price almost forty dollars more than the list price direct from the publisher?
Top of the Pops.......2003-06-02
This is the bible of the AR-Phile. It is full of the minutiae that will make a tech geek babble with glee. If you love the AR and want to know all there is to know about its history and development buy this book. Buy it now before it gets more expensive.
Very technical book that tells the story.......2003-03-17
Mr. Steven's book tells the story of how this rifle was adopted and he goes into great detail. If you are uninterested in this level of detail perhaps this isn't the book for you. But for the enthusiast this is a four or five star book. It really depends on your level of interest.
What was the point of the book?.......2002-08-20
This book was incredibly difficult to read. Despite my interest in the subject matter it was just a difficult and rather cumbersome read.
I think having someone with a flair for storytelling instead of stapling together disjointed reports would be an improvement. Even the typesetting was difficult. At the end of each paragraph you had to decide where to continue reading.
It was almost as if you had to know the material to read the book.
Detailed account of the development of the M16 family.......1998-02-01
A truly detailed account of the development of the M16 family of weapons. This book answers the who, what, when, why, and how going into detailed descriptions not only of the mechanics, but the politics, and personalities as well. A very authoritative, interesting piece of work. The only downfall in my opinion is that at times it was just a little dry. (When going into the minute details of some of the tests I wasn't particularly interested in.)Engineers may well have found it very interesting. Colt currently trains police department armorers on the AR15/M16 family of weapons. The instructor for that course could enhance his knowledge tenfold by reading this book.

The Cole/Delgado Series.......2007-07-13
If you haven't read all the books in the series then you should definetely pick them up. This is another excellent book by Ms. Alers. The only reason I put it down was so the story wouldn't end so soon. Hopefully she will come up with another exciting series that her fans will enjoy!
Kudos for Ms. Alers!!!
very nice.......2007-06-26
This book was a very easy and pleasant read.It flows easily and keeps you interested.
Give me a break!.......2007-06-22
To L.D. Brown of Compton, CA - you really aren't missing any thing. All of Alers characters in this series are the same. The characters are all perfect and too predictable. I've read several of her books (like a fool) and can't for the life of me point to one that I could honestly say I enjoyed or that I didn't toss aside at some point during reading because the characters just got on my nerves. They are multi-racial, speak several languages, own a conglomerate, are the wealthest African-American family in the U.S., have their own island, have private jet(s), recipients of Oscar and/or Grammy awards, are spies, and of course reside in Palm Beach Florida in sprawling mansions. The women of the Kirkland/Cole/Diaz clan are basically breath taking, strong-willed with great hair and carmel colored skin and the men are all attentive, strong and gorgeous with gray eyes, green eyes, whiskey colored eyes. Like I said give me a break! I put Alers in the same category as Brenda Jackson another writer who utilizes cookie cutter characters with no depth and plots that make me just cringe. And please whatever you do, do not think of these books as examples of romance. They are about sex, Don't get me wrong. I'm not a prude but, I do like characters with some astuteness and convincing plots. Please deliver me from characters who jump into bed and then wonder later who they just slept with and never get the questions answered right up until the day she's walking down the isle pregnant on her wedding day.
"I Need To Read From The Very Beginning".......2007-05-31
I'm new to Ms. Alers' Hideaway series and from what I've read so far, it's an o.k. novel. Like the title of my review says, "I need to read from the very beginning" to get a better understanding of it all.
The history was out of order.......2007-05-24
as a stand alone this book was great but if you have read all of her work you will see that this book recreates history.
Micheal and Jolene's daughter Teresa was born before Tyler and Dana met, remember he was babsitting her when he talked to Dana on the phone. In this book they were already married and adopting their daughter who they didn't adopt until after their biological child Martin was born he isn't even mentioned in this book....all out of sequence..there was some other things as well which made the book harder to read.
As a stand alone book though the book is good!

Customer Reviews:
"Must have" book.......2007-07-13
This book has invaluable information for all gun enthusiasts, not only S & W collectors. Very well written and illustrated. A "must have" book.
Indispensible.......2007-07-02
This book is indispensible to the S&W collector. It is the S&W collector's Bible. Worth three times thecost, you need to buy it right now!
Excellent reference and not a clone.......2007-05-31
The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson has proven to be a useful tool, offering better illustration of models and expanded listing of models and details over the more general guides. By comparison, the Standard Catalog provides 70 pages of Smith & Wesson listings, while the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson provides 432. The authors, Jim Supica and Richard Nahas are recognized as long standing experts in Smith and Wesson firearms, in both model identification and value.
The authors did an excellent job of identifying factors unique to S&W in value determination, including how S&W collectors might differ from others. Section One, as an example, covers S&W frame sizes and side plate screw counts, pinned and unpinned barrels and hand ejector models as they relate to model identification. Engraving is organized by artist, by time period and by source. NRA condition classifications are extended further into finish and factory refinish, modifications, serial number integrity and grips. I did not realize there was such a big market for S&W stocks. Not only are stocks addressed, but so are manuals and boxes.
The organization is good. Not appearing strictly in model number order or date of production, S&W revolvers are broken into groups such as "Tip Up", "Top Break", "Single Shot", "Early Hand Ejector", "Modern Hand Ejector", "Semi-Auto....". It really isn't so difficult for even a novice to navigate and there is a good solid model number index at the back of the book. Covered firearms are all S&W handguns through the S&W 460 and S&W 500 chambers, long guns, boxes, cases, and even AR 15 types of current production. Individual model entries are not sketchy. As an example, just one line listings of Model 10 specials and variations went on for two full pages. Model descriptions are very full, unique characteristics in product or packaging indicated, dates of production and production counts are present in each case. To some extend, branded general merchandise is also covered; knives, belt buckles, etc.
The book is an excellent value.
The Smith & Wesson Legend.......2007-05-13
All the revolvers/automatics that made Smith & Wesson famous along with the boxes/accessories that made them "complete" are shown in excellent detail. Serial/model numbers are listed with amazing accuracy along with information about the engineering changes and reason for them. A "must have" for anyone interested in these legendary firearms.
Great Book.......2007-05-13
This guide is the essential book for Smith & Wesson collectors. Written by two fellows that are always willing to respond to questions from anyone about the topic. Must reading

A good reference but..........2007-09-08
Not as updated as it would have you believe but still a good reference if you don't already own an earlier version and it does have a lot of photos.
Great visual aid.......2007-05-18
While not the end all of reference guides, when used in combination with other reference guides the book is very useful. The pictures have proven to be invaluable for identifying a certain model or type of firearm.
Helpful & Useful.......2007-05-16
Very useful and full of information. We buy a new book every year to keep up with the pricing, but also to see how our investments have done!!
Good Book.......2007-05-13
I have purchased this book since they started publishing it. I collect guns and this is a great pricing guide. This issue is a little below the standards of previous years. They seem to have changed some subtle things that won't affect the first time buyer but for the perpetual purchaser are disappointing.
Excellent resource.......2007-05-13
Excellant resource however, you still need military gun resource to compliment this as it is deficient in this.
Book Description
Since their inception, nuclear weapons have multiplied at an alarming rate, leaving everyone from policymakers to concerned citizens wondering what it will take to slow, stop, or even reverse their spread. With clarity and expertise, Joseph Cirincione presents an even-handed look at the history of nuclear proliferation and an optimistic vision of its future, providing a comprehensive survey of the wide range of critical perspectives.
Cirincione begins with the first atomic discoveries of the 1930s and covers the history of their growth all the way to current crisis with Iran. He unravels the science, strategy, and politics that have fueled the development of nuclear stockpiles and increased the chance of a nuclear terrorist attack. He also explains why many nations choose not to pursue nuclear weapons and pulls from this the outlines of a solution to the world's proliferation problem: a balance of force and diplomacy, enforcement and engagement that yields a steady decrease in these deadly arsenals.
Though nuclear weapons have not been used in war since August 1945, there is no guarantee this good fortune will continue. A unique blend of history, theory, and security analysis, Bomb Scare is an engaging text that not only supplies the general reader and student with a clear understanding of this issue but also provides a set of tools policymakers and scholars can use to prevent the cataclysmic consequences of another nuclear attack.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding!.......2007-07-10
"Bomb Scare" is full of credible and helpful data, as well as balanced in its assessments.
Early on readers learn that it takes about 80 generations of neutrons to fission a kilogram of material - this takes about 0.8 microseconds and creates a temperature of 10 billion Celsius. A gun design plug in an enriched uranium bomb has to travel at at least 1,000 ft./second to initiate a sustained chain reaction. The Hiroshima bomb gun barrel weighed about 1,000 lbs. and was 6 feet long; the bomb itself used 64 kilos of U-235. Today this could be accomplished with 25 kilos and put into a package about the size of a small melon. (Plutonium could not be used in a gun design - its neutrons are too fast.)
Implosion-type designs are used for plutonium bombs. About 6 kilos was used for the Trinity test and at Nagasaki. Modern weapons use about 5 kilograms - about the size of a plum. (So much for the debate on whether "suitcase" bombs are feasible.)
The first U.S. H-bomb had a yield of 10.4 megatons.
The U.S. total stockpile of nuclear and thermonuclear weapons reached around 20,000 by 1960, vs. 1,600 for the Russians. (So much for Kennedy's argument that the U.S. had a "bomb gap.") We recently learned that during the Cuban missile crisis the Russians had already positioned about 100 nuclear weapons in Cuba.
There are five main reasons states acquire nuclear weapons: Security, prestige, domestic politics, technology, and economics. Different sides of the same reasons are also why many nations choose not to acquire such weapons.
Cirincione sees Russia as the #1 potential source of nuclear weapons/material for terrorists. It has thousands of nuclear weapons at 150-210 sites and hundreds of nuclear materials at about 49 sites. Experts believe that it would be difficult for terrorists to acquire a completed bomb - they are well guarded and utilize complex security locks. On the other hand, experts also believe that terrorists could construct a bomb from enriched material with only 3-4 technically people.
Pakistan is seen as a close #2 potential source. USA Today reported in November of 2001 that at least 10 Taliban had contacted Pakistani scientists in the prior two years. Pakistan has enough highly enriched uranium to make 50-100 bombs.
There are also about 40 nations with civilian stockpiles for power reactors. While not sufficiently enriched for nuclear weapons, it would be a simple matter to extend the enrichment process to create such.
Potential nuclear powder-kegs involve U.S. and Russian weapons being on 15-minute alert, and situations involving Taiwan, or India-Pakistan. Adverse recent events include the U.S. invasion of Iraq (increased terrorist and nervous state motivation to acquire nuclear weapons), our support for increased Indian development of nuclear weapons, U.S. promulgation of new logic for nuclear weapon use ("bunker-busters," use against non-nuclear states), and a slowdown/stop in reduction programs involving Russia.
The good news is that the number of nuclear weapons in the world has been cut in half over the past 15 years, those seriously considering their acquisition or having them have declined from 23 to 10, there has been a two-thirds reduction in ICBMs, and both the U.S. and Russia have destroyed their chemical weapons.
Author's Bottom Line: Cirincione believes that efforts must not only be directed at reducing nuclear weapons and proliferation, but eliminating the underlying sources of conflict as well.
History, security analysis and theory blends in a general text for any student of world politics.......2007-06-09
BOMB SCARE: THE HISTORY & FUTURE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS begins with the first atomic discoveries of the 1930s and covers the history of the growth of nuclear weapons through the decades, right up to the current crisis with Iran and the threat of worldwide proliferation. History, security analysis and theory blends in a general text for any student of world politics and military history, particularly at the college level.
USAF Vet Recommends Five Stars.......2007-06-08
Those of us with a Top Secret "Q" Clearance during the Cold War are intimately familiar with the horrific realities of what a nuclear confrontation would mean for civilization. The author provides a concise, accurate, and up-to-date history of the nuclear threat. He also advances the best thinking related to diminishing the threats posed by nuclear arms in the 21st century, and putting the materials of decommissioned warheads to peaceful uses as fuel for nuclear reactors.
Overly Optimistic.......2007-04-09
This book deals with something that most of us don't spend much time thinking about. We should think about it more.
Cirincione, the former director of the Nonproliferation Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, takes the reader through the history of the development of nuclear weapons and the arms control agreements that have somewhat curtailed their spread. He presents a rational analysis of the drivers that cause states to seek to acquire nuclear weapons as well as the barriers that motivate some to turn away from the quest, or abandon it altogether.
And in the light of reasoned consideration he concludes, "The good news is that the nonproliferation regime has worked. The nuclear threat is less severe today than it was in 1970 when the Non-Proliferation Treaty entered into force". He bases this assessment on the fact that "the number of nuclear weapons in the world has declined from a peak of 65,000 in 1986, to roughly 27,000 today". But does this necessarily make the world a safer place?
Cirincione takes satisfaction that "the threat of a global thermonuclear war is now near zero". He goes on to state, "The dangers we face today are very serious, but they are orders of magnitude less severe than those we confronted just two decades ago from the overkill potential of U.S. and Russian arsenals. We no longer worry about the fate of the earth, but we still worry about the fate of our cities". It is in the ensuing discussion of nuclear terrorism that the upbeat tenor of the author's faith in the potential of negotiations and agreements to manage the imminent threat increasingly seems disconnected from reality.
While it is true that the threat of global thermonuclear war has diminished, the probability all out nuclear war was always very low as a result of the Strangelovian logic of mutually assured destruction. On the other hand, the likelihood of the detonation of a nuclear weapon smuggled into an American city by terrorists in the next decade is clearly significant. While such an event would not be the end of life on this planet, its societal, economic and political consequences would almost certainly be the end of life as we have come to know it. And, millions of people would die. This being the case, how can the author argue that the world is safer now than it was twenty years ago?
Cirincione also contends that the reduction in ballistic missiles is an indicator of a reduction of risk in the present day. What he neglects to consider is that weapons dispatched through alternate means - say in shipping containers with GPS activation - do not leave a return address, and as a result would not invite immediate retaliation. It would seem that a country hostile to the United States could launch such an attack with an impunity that would be inconceivable were the method of delivery a ballistic missile.
In this context it's hard to buy into the author's upbeat assessment of the future. As he would have it, securing existing weapons and stocks of fissile materials, new rounds of negotiations employing various carrots and sticks, and the good example of further disarmament by the US and Russia hold the promise of a better and a safer world. The problem is that while these actions are indeed necessary they are certainly not sufficient to produce the intended outcome. This is particularly the case given that some future nuclear adversaries may hold to apocalyptic world views.
Towards the end of the book Cirincione writes, "After wading through the history, theory, dangers, challenges and failures of proliferation policy, most readers could be excused for feeling a bit depressed. Don't be".
I guess I just can't help it. I am.
Sleeper Awake!.......2007-03-05
Perhaps the most significant issue in this century is not AIDS, the energy crisis, the environment or the Middle East but is the issue of universal nuclear disarmament. Joseph Cirincione has given us a clear solution to this problem in his book, BOMB SCARE: THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS.
The first recorded war between nation states occurred in 2700 BC. From that time to the present man has devised a plethora of clever devices to kill and maim his fellows.
Since the fall of the Soviet Union near the end of the last century (1991), the United States has funded the Russian government in the "cleanup" of warheads, bombs and other nuclear components scattered throughout the various nuclear facilities in the former Soviet Republic in an attempt to prevent terrorists and other non-nuclear nations from obtaining the same. Cirincione believes that "with additional funding, this threat reduction program could be accelerated to secure or eliminate the vast majority of nuclear weapons and materials by 2010."
The issue, of course, is that the "have-nots" want what the "haves" have: NUCLEAR ENERGY. Here the author proposes that a new system controlled by the International Atomic Energy Agency would provide a supply of nuclear material to countries that need it for civilian use in exchange for an agreement that those same countries not seek to build facilities to create their own "nuclear resources".
Cirincione understands that it is impossible to convince the "have-nots" to give up their nuclear weapons ambitions and to adhere to nonproliferation norms while the "haves" assert the importance of these weapons for their own safety and security (read that Pakistan and Iran). As one state goes nuclear, another state is forced to do the same thing ad infinitum: "in short, proliferation begets proliferation." Cirincione whimsically wonders if the obverse is possible.
188 countries are signatories to the Non-Proliferation Treaty that became effective in 1970. The only countries that have not signed are: Israel, Pakistan, and India. North Korea has withdrawn. These are the countries the treaty has unsuccessfully prevented from obtaining nuclear resources. The original signatories, the United States, Russia, Great Britain, France and China all agreed to ultimately dismantle their arsenals under a future agreement: to date that "future accord" has not happened. In fact, advances in this area have continued. Without compliance with this treaty, Cirincione posits the world faces a nuclear disaster.
In the end the author asks the reader to think beyond the old paradigms and to dare to explore ways to prevent what certainly, in the world's present state, is a sure slide into nuclear oblivion. This is more than a thoughtful book, it is a book every American should read and take to heart.
Book Description
In today's world it can be difficult to feel safe and secure. That's why in Safe in the Shepard's Arms Max Lucado offers a reliable source of safety and security from the twenty-third Psalm. He describes this psalm as "written by a shepherd who became a king-because He wanted us to know about a King who became a shepherd." With Psalm twenty-three as our guide, we can release our burdens, throw off our fears, and rest safely in the Shepherd's arms.

This easy-to-read book is excellent for people who find themselves in survival mode. The book is very portable, small enough to slip into a handbag. The illustrations display hope, safety, and love, and the words speak comfort and solace. I gave this book as a gift, and I am thoroughly impressed with it. Author, With Great Mercy.

legendcolt/an american.......2007-05-09
The next best thing to buying a colt revolver itself.
Excellent in every respect and well recommended.
Surprised at the profusive praise.......2006-07-01
I bought this book sight unseen based on my interest in the subject matter and from seeing other offerings of RL Wilson and liking them. First off, this book hasn't been updated since it was produced in the late 80s. Lots has changed since that time. First off, I need to claim my biases. When it comes to Colt I am primarily interested in Single Action Armies, 1911s, and the Python/Diamonbacks. That said I couldn't believe how little photography was devoted to the 1911. By far the most numerous of Colts ever made due to WWI and II production. There were very few photos of standard production 1911s and those that were there were of well used and weatherbeaten ones. There were more of the decorative/unique 1911s. I am fortunate enough to live near a collection of Frank Phillip's (Petroleum) Colt's in the museum in Bartlesville, OK. I couldn't believe Wilson would not photograph their Colts. They're pristine, covering every major variant. The Peacemaker was given fair coverage. The Python and Diamondback were given very little coverage. At the time the Diamondback was current production and more blah in his opinion, I am sure. Looking back on it, it was a classic since it was the last affordable, working man's revolver made by Colt. Now, to me, it marks the end of an epoch. Yes, Colt still makes Pythons but they are so expensive, hard to find and production is so limited they are not hardly worth talking about anymore. If you are into the early guns primarily this is probably a great book. Based on my interests this book was a bit of a disappointment.
Colt Collector.......2005-10-07
This is the book if you collect Colts. It has all the early serial numbers.
View the mountaintop of gun collecting..........2004-09-22
Look, you can't get Wilson's seminal, collectible The Book of Colt Firearms because it is out of print, costs $1000 if you can find one, and your wife would kill you.
Get this book. This is as close as you can get and is widely available. I use it all the time to look up the date of manufacture of any Colt's I might want to buy. The illustrations are quite outstanding.
If you don't know, Mr. Wilson is the most famous Colt expert, who must be incredibly rich to have built his collection. Most of the items shown are from Wilson's own collection, worth millions. He doesn't need the money from this book. It is a labor of love.
Invaluable and pleasurable.......2004-07-09
This is an invaluable tome for appreciators of the Colt lineage and for appreciators of the history of the Colt enterprise. In this volume R.L. Wilson chronicles as accurately as possible the real story of how Sam Colt perservered to finally deliver a quantum leap in weapons technology after being rebuffed at first. The marvellous high quality photographs of arms are a treat in themselves and this is a book you'll find yourself pickup up over and over again to enjoy.

Great Reference, but way to general and out of date.......2007-05-14
THis was one of the more expensive books I bought for info on the ARM architectures, but I'm disappointed, the book covers just the core ARM architecture and is a few years out of date now too. Its a tough book to write, no doubt, there are so many variations on ARM that its unrealistic to expect them all to be coevered, but I'd like to have seen some more specifics. Most ARM imlementations by the multiple vendors ot there put in a bunch of peripherals, I'd like to have seen some attemtp to address those features better.
If you wanted a detailed ARM core reference, it might be the book for you, but bear in mind it doesn;t addres the newer products...
Arm archticture reference manual 2nd edition.......2006-07-14
I you plan , or are already developing for arm , than this book is a must have on the bookshelf !
Clear, competent, well organized........2004-07-17
This is a completely adequate reference for the basic ARM architecture, including the Thumb instruction set.
This is a reference book, not an instruction manual - you'll probably be happiest with this book if you already know at least one or two other assembly languages. Given that background, you might like the ARM ISP. It's a very regular RISC. The Thumb subset is even more stripped-down, but lets you pack parts of you code almost twice as densely as usual.
If you've gotten this far, you already know that there are dozens of ARM implementations, with different add-ons and special features. This, of course, can't handle your special circumstance. Still, it's my favortie presentation of the core ARM instruction set.

3 Reasons to buy in spite of the free ARM PDFs.......2003-04-30
Most everything here is in ARM's free databook PDFs. So why buy it? (1) It is cheaper than printing those huge PDFs. (2) It is easier to read. (3) It gives some history and tips that are difficult to find in the PDFs, but help us all write better code.
One complaint: poor binding. Manuals should be bound so they lay flat on a desk and stay open to the page being referenced. The fact that my cheif complaint has nothing to do with the content says volumes about this book.
Good buy.
Great Reference Manual.......2001-08-29
Covers everything you might need to know about ARM assembly language programming. It has three sections: A. CPU Architecture - ARM instruction set (regular and Thumb) - ARM addressing modes - Examples B. Memory and System Architecture -System Control Coprocessor, MMU, Protection Unit, Caches and Write Buffers C. Vector Floating Point Architecture - Formats, instructions and addressing modes For a more broad and general introduction into ARM Furber's book is excellent and should be purchased first(unless you are just need a reference manual).
