Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-07-18
Sean Clancy did a marvelous job with this book. I laughed, I cried (a lot). If anyone followed what happened to Barbaro this book is a must. Thank you Mr. Clancy for writing such a glowing story about this beautiful animal.
A truly wonderful, must-read story.......2007-06-08
This book was beautifully written and I enjoyed every page. Barbaro touched the lives of so many of us and I still feel the sorrow of his tragic injury and ultimate death. What a courageous animal! I also want to give praise to Edgar Prado who wept for Barbaro and probably still does.
This strong, tough as nails jockey has a heart and lots of soul and I admire him tremendously. Barbaro meant much more than a paycheck to Mr. Prado. I am a fan and admirer of this man who felt so much for Barbaro mand who grieved with the rest of the world at his loss.
No praise and no words could pay proper tribute to Dr. Dean Richardson and all the staff who fought so hard to keep Barbaro alive and whose main objective was that he live a life free from pain. What a valient struggle!
It's wonderful knowing there are still professionals who truly care, and human beings who aren't afraid of having a heart and aren't afraid of allowing the world to see it.
Read it Without Crying..........2007-05-13
This is a very well written book of the Barbaro story told with insight and compassion, without being maudlin. Of course when he wrote the book he thought Barbaro would live, as most of us who were rooting for him, did. So the tone is positive and the pictures are worth the price of the book. A great horse and a great story - worth every penny!
Barbaro: A Nation's Love Story.......2007-05-12
What a gift this is. Wonderful pictures and step by step story of this incredible horse. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
A compelling read and especially recommended to horse racing enthusiasts in general.......2007-05-08
Not since the legendary Secretariat has any thoroughbred race horse captured the imagination of the public so swiftly and enthusiastically as Barbaro. His was a story of high achievement over great odds and the promise of a Triple Crown winner - only to suffer a catastrophic racing injury that resulted in the shattering of his right hind leg. "Barbaro: The Horse Who Captured America's Heart" is also the story of a dedicated trainer, Michael Matz, and a veterinary science that brought the cutting edge of medical technology to the service of a badly injured and beloved animal. Profusely illustrated with full color photography throughout, "Barbaro" is a compelling read and especially recommended to horse racing enthusiasts in general, and Barbaro fans in particular.

Book Description
What do Warren G. Harding, Attila the Hun, and Louis B. Mayer have in common? These days, they're residing in that hip, hot neighborhood called Hell. Yes, according to the authors, these luminaries and millions (maybe trillions?) more have left our Earthly paradise with a one-ticket to the land of infernal flames. Irreverent, authoritative, accurate, and funny as . . . well, you know what, Who In Hell explains the sins of Hades' inhabitants and its not-so-civil servants. Illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Funny and thought provoking........2003-04-02
Provides insight into the evils committed by man (and woman) throughout the ages, but does so in a whimsical manner that makes it difficult to put the book down. I found myself leafing through the pages and wondering if I'd find -insert name here- damned to the pits of Hades.
Strange that I couldn't find Mother Theresa. :)
Humorous yet informative.......2002-08-10
"Who In Hell" is guide to the authors point of view of who he thinks is in hell. It contains 4 presidents and few of the popes and many celebrities and serial killers. Each person has a little bio on them on why exactly they went to hell. Not only is all of the bio's humorous but at the same time they are very informative as well and explains some facts that I had no idea about.
"Who in Hell" is not just limited to humans though, it has every demon supposably known to be listed in this book and their bio explains what evil each demon does.
I laughed at many of the readings in this book but I also learned a lot as well. I mean seriously did you actually think Walt Disney went to hell?? Well according to this book he did!! So did Julius Ceaser!!
Good book for those with twisted humours.......2001-03-10
I enjoyed sitting down and reading this book, which read like an encyclopedia of all of Hells denizens. It is very well written and very funny, describing all who have wound up in Hell after their nefarious lives. A good fun read if you can find it.
Amusing encyclopedia of speculation.......2000-11-30
John Paul II once said that "no man, not even Judas, can be said with certainty to be [in Hell]."
It is apparant, however, that humor writers Sean Kelly and Rosemary Rogers may not be privy to Hell's residential directories, but they have certainly made the speculation all the more interesting with their joint effort Who in Hell... : a Guide to the Whole Damned Bunch. This alphabetized directory offers entries on history's better-known adulterers, heretics, thieves, tyrants, and general nasty folk, as evidenced from text in The Bible, Dante's Inferno, and various mythological sources.
If you are convinced that the more-than-sunny side of the afterlife is your destination, you will discover that, according to Kelly and Rogers, you may be in good (?) company. Listed with the sin (ranging from the Seven Deadly ones to others just as bad) that likely brought them to Hell, many expected names are included. There is Judas Iscariot (deicide, treason), Adolf Hitler (suicide, though that seems to be the least of his deeds), David Koresh (blasphemy), and Aleister Crowley (fraud).
Mind you, also, that Hell is an equal-opportunity place, where one will discover Protestant religious leaders (John Knox, Henry VIII of England), popes (Leo X, Sergius III), the occasional entertainer (Mae West, who sealed her doom by leading a life of lust), and even an honorary resident (Henry Kissinger, who, though still alive, leads the authors to believed that he reserved a spot in Hell for certain reasons).
Who in Hell..., though a book that does prompt some serious thoughts about the next life, is a book to be taken lightly with good humor, as well a simple guide on what not to do if one desires salvation.
I have read a couple of her books.......1999-04-24
Can you please send me a profile of Rosemary Rogers, the author. She is a countrywoman from Sri Lanka like me.

Customer Reviews:
the book that started my addiction..........2005-06-30
All that I can say is that Sean Flynn wrote this book about a horrific true event in such a way that I feel as if I lost my friends in the blaze. I can only imagine how the true friends of these 6 men felt and continue to feel each time they see a family member of one of their perished brothers. I'm not a crying man, but I cried at some points in this story b/c they hit so close to home for one, but for two you get so wrapped up in the lives of these men that you feel the stinging pain of realizing they have died. It's a sad story, that I actually remembered hearing about after i read the book, but it's also very motivating to anybody that has thought of becoming a FF. It's almost as its a test of your heart to be a FF. Like the beginning of initiation (hazing) to become a part of a fraternity. I know two other people that read it, that upon completion(one wasn't even able to finish) withdrew from the FF applicant process in which we all signed up together. Weeds out the weak...well kinda. :o)
Either way you look at it, this is good reading. I finished in in 4 days and I was continually fussed at for 3 of those days by my 9 month pregnant girlfriend b/c I wasn't giving her the attention she wanted. Now she's reading it and i'm not getting any attention. Go fig!
Buy the book! BTW...my addiction i speak of in my title just means my addiction to FF books.
Realistic and compassionate........2005-01-14
I really enjoyed this book. My dad was a firefighter and I thought the writer portrayed the firefighters with a tough realisim without taking away their compassion for what they do. The families stories seemed to convey not only the day to day fears that all firefighters families have but, a small sense of what they went through when the unimaginable happened to them. Overall a great read by a writer who seemed to care about the subject.
WORCESTER not WORCHESTER - Keep the H out of it.......2004-03-25
Note to who ever wrote the Publishers Weekly review. Get a map. The second largest city in New England is Worcester Mass. not WorcHester. Those of us born and raised there pronounce the city to rhyme with mister.
Riviting.......2004-02-18
I read this book simply because my boyfriend said he couldn't put it down. I was mesmorized by the bravery these men went gave out to fight the fire. After every page, I kept thinking to myself, "This is TRUE." I have a stronger respect for the brave fire fighters aroundt he world. Not only is this book about the fire and the fighters themselves, but it also depicts the family's devistation after the fact. Every page brought tears to my eyes. I would recommend this book to anyone, especially family's of fire fighters. Didn't want to put it down.
Heart Wrenching.......2004-02-08
You meet Worcesters finest, go to work with them. Then the worst happens and you pray with them, cry with them, and mourn with them. This book is wonderful, I could not put it down. I cired for the families and for the Firefighters left behind.

brief portraits of influential, memorable women.......2005-05-30
There's the familiar, expected, notable women--the flier Amelia Earhart, the black author Zora Neale Hurston, the artist Frida Kahlo, the philanthropist Eleanor Roosevelt. But there's also a number of accomplished lesser-known women and ones who have achieved recognition in recent years who are not yet seen as regulars in the circle of historically significant women. Thus, one finds the architect Maya Lin and the figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi. Outstanding women from diverse ethnic backgrounds and active in diverse fields, from labor unions to science to entertainment, are included in the twenty-six for each letter of the alphabet. Each woman is pictured in a collage-like illustration with objects representing what she is recognized for.

A wonderful international cross-section of visionary, trailblazing, and role models among men.......2007-02-04
Akira to Zoltan: Twenty-Six Men Who Changed the World is combination picturebook, alphabet book, and biography for young readers. Each page corresponds to the name of a different man whose dedication left an indissoluble mark on history. A thumbnail biography, color illustration of each individual, and a notable quote outline the contributions of Cesar Estrada Chavez, co-founder of the United Farm Workers; soccer superstar Pele; builder of dreams Walt Disney; and many more. A wonderful international cross-section of visionary, trailblazing, and role models among men, especially recommended for young boys.

Psychology overview for non-psychologists.......2007-08-17
This book offers an engaging overview of 50, for the most part, widely popular psychology books as well as short biographies of their authors. Knowing the backgrounds of these psychologists helps to understand where they are coming from and what motivated them to explore a particular area of human mind, or behavior and arrive at particular conclusions.
Some of the authors covered are William James, Sigmund Freud, Karl Gustav Jung, Abraham Maslow, Dr. Milton Erickson (as a hypnotherapist, I was thrilled that he was mentioned here), Robert Cialdini, David Burns, and many others who have contributed not only to the greater understanding of human mind and behavior, but also to creating methods and techniques some appropriate for use within therapeutic environment and others designed to help people to use on their own to cope better with life's challenges, to feel better and to live more satisfying lives.
Tom has done it again!.......2007-02-11
Tom Butler-Bowdon again provides an informative, passionate, and engaging guide through literature that will improve our lives as well as those around us. His choice of books and their descriptions are brilliant. I wonder what he will come out with next? I always look forward to his books and his enthusiastic and superb style of writing. Tom thanks again for providing us with the knowledge we need in our journey of life.
Highly recommended.
Excellent comprehensive overview of psychology.......2007-02-04
Following on from Tom Butler-Bowdon's previous volumes in the "50 Classics" series, this first class collection of summaries of key psychology books and authors continues in the same broad, accessible, but also in-depth, style.
As the sub-title says, psychology is all about who we are, how we think, what we do. In other words, what it means to be human. Topics covered include the unconscious mind, happiness and mental health, the study of personality, motivation, love, creativity and relationships.
With key "in a nutshell" comments, the author cuts to the essential message of each writer, while addressing more complex subtleties in the accompanying text. As with Tom's other books, there is a very wide range of carefully chosen authors. I had come across several here in an academic context, but in general the emphasis is on popular psychology, "Psychology for nonpsychologists" as the jacket puts it. The range includes RD Laing, Oliver Sacks, Fritz Perls, Ivan Pavlov, Eric Berne, to pick a few random names. The founding fathers such as William James and Sigmund Freud are covered, alongside over a century's worth of contributions right up to Malcolm Gladwell with his 2005 bestseller on the importance of first impressions and split-second judgment.
There is a huge amount of psychological and self-development literature available these days. It can be difficult to know where to begin but each volume in the "50 Classics" is an excellent starting point. "50 Psychology Classics" is another winner in the series and I wholeheartedly recommend it!
Another great 50 CLASSICS!.......2007-01-24
I stumbled upon one of Tom's 50 CLASSICS books while doing an internet search one day, and I was so excited about the concept! For a person like me-- who loves books related to self-help, success, spirituality, and psychology and yet struggles to find time to read the many that are out there, this concept is absolutely ideal. In this busy and information-overloaded world, it's impossible for most of us to read all of the books that Tom has read for each 50 CLASSICS, much less retain the information in each. Thankfully, Tom has done the challenging and time-consuming work to make this important information more accessible for all of us. He has identified some of the most influential authors in each area and summarized their work in a clear and well-organized manner. Furthermore, in the introduction to each of his books, Tom includes a well-written overview of all the authors and books included in each 50 CLASSICS. In these overviews, he further summarizes the books and themes in ways that make the information easy-to-understand and remember. All of this gives the reader extremely helpful and educational information in a clear, concise format-- and in one book that easily can be reviewed often. I believe that's what it takes to have any hope of truly retaining the main ideas of so many excellent books and truly applying them to make positive changes in one's life. Furthermore, Tom's identification of such interesting authors and books, some of which I hadn't heard of before, has helped me identify some titles that I want to read in their entirety (when I can find the time, of course)--and thankfully, Tom's summaries will always be helpful reminders of the main points. 50 PSYCHOLOGY CLASSICS is an excellent addition to the 50 CLASSICS collection, and I believe it's very helpful for psychology professionals (my mom is one and greatly appreciates this book too), interested amateurs (as I am), and students as well. Thank you, Tom! I hope there will be more 50 CLASSICS in the near future!
Butler-Bowdon with another Classic of 50 Classics!.......2007-01-22
Kings who sent out explorers would eagerly await the gems, riches, and exotica with which the explorers returned. We all live like relative kings now, and our explorer, Tom Butler-Bowdon has returned once again, this time with rich insights into the human mind.
What determines our personality? Is it our genetics, our environment, or circumstantial conditioning? What about our primary motivation? Is it sexual, our will to power, sheer survival, or our desire to close our personal existential gap? Since your mind was already focused on sex, how does our sex affect the way our minds work, and how is the way our minds feel about sex affected by our sex to begin with? And what is going on in the minds of others and how do we best communicate with them?
For lifelong learners, this book is another joy. We have the same time leverage provided by 50 Self-Help Classics, 50 Success Classics, and 50 Spiritual Classics. For each work, Tom gives us his consistent format of introductory quotes, the main idea in one sentence, related chapters, the distillation of the work, final comments, and relevant author biographical information. These books have raised the content level of my professional speaking and training faster than any other series. This is high density mind food!
Unlike the kings of old, we can easily experience the explorer's destinations by using Butler-Bowdon's book as a travel guide. When you do follow up by reading his chosen classics you will be impressed by his accuracy in crystallizing the essence of the works he has studied. Be the beneficiary of his intellectual journey!
ATTENTION: IF YOU ARE A COLLEGE STUDENT TAKING LOW LEVEL PSYCH COURSES, BUY AND READ THIS BOOK. IT WILL GIVE YOU AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE IN LECTURES, ON TESTS, AND WRITING PAPERS.
You will grow intellectually. You will grow personally. Your insights as you interact with others around you will increase.
Maybe you'll come to the conclusion that even the possibility of our exchange of ideas is only because of the convenient fiction of personality produced by the mechanisms of our mind. Quick, read another chapter!
Get the whole set of 50 Classics. They are also a great listen in audio book format!

Book Description
THE GUYS WHO WROTE 'EM: SONGWRITING GENIUSES OF ROCK AND POP
Leiber & Stoller. Mann & Weil. Greenwich & Barry. Bobby Hart. Chip Taylor. Holland-Dozier-Holland. Tony Macaulay. Stock, Aitken & Waterman. Few would recognise them in the street but they are responsible for some of the best-selling and most famous songs of all time. From Jailhouse Rock to You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' to Leader Of The Pack to (Theme From) The Monkees to Reach Out I'll Be There to Wild Thing to Build Me Up Buttercup to I Should Be So Lucky, their melodies and lyrics are embedded in the minds of music lovers worldwide.
With the aid of lengthy and exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in the history of rock and pop songwriting, Sean Egan's The Guys Who Wrote 'Em seeks to put right the lack of recognition for compositional geniuses who for most of their careers have chosen to use their musical skills to help not themselves but others achieve stardom. The result is a recounting of the story of post-Elvis popular music from an intriguing and delightful lateral angle.
Amongst those to whom respected music journalist Egan has been granted access are Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Ellie Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Eddie and Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Bobby Hart, Joey Levine, Graham Gouldman, Chip Taylor, Tony Macaulay, Nicky Chinn, Mike Stock and Matt Aitken. Their anecdotes feature Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Eric Clapton, The Shangri-Las, Diana Ross, Jimi Hendrix and a host of other iconic figures.
The Guys Who Wrote 'Em is both the most comprehensive book ever written about the `bespoke songwriter' and the fascinating, untold story of popular music.
Customer Reviews:
Original and outstanding rock book.......2004-10-22
Rock books are now numerous. But they are nearly always about individual rock stars, famous groups or musical genres. But no rock star is worth anything without a great melody and memorable lyrics. The men and women who composed the great rock and roll songbook are too often ignored. For many, they're simply a name in brackets after the song title on the record label. That's where Sean Egan's book scores a first. He has interviewed nearly all of the legendary rock composers: Leiber and Stoller (the greatest?), Holland-Dozier-Holland, Greenwich and Barry, and many others, from the dawn of rock to the latest songsmiths. Only the Yanks and the Brits can write great rock, of course; so Sean Egan doesn't forget the Limeys: Graham Gouldman, Nicky Chinn, Stock and Aitken, among others.
It's a book rich in detail and full of anecdotes. For who better to see and record the unknown side of rock stars than the guys and ladies who wrote their songs, worked with them, and, frequently, had to put up with their quirks and tantrums? This is a pretty complete history of rock and pop, but from an original perspective. Sean Egan's book fills a black hole in rock and roll history. But he does it in a delightfully unpretentious way. Egan has no axe to grind; he simply wants to give the songwriters' side of the story. He lets, wherever he can, the songwriters speak for themselves. No good rock and roll library should be without this book. Every time you listen to one of the rock classics, you'll have a new insight into the pain, effort, time and genius that went into its creation. Like me, I'll bet you read it in one go.
