My name is Schuyler®. I read Charlie & the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Charlie is one fifth of the lucky children that get to go into the chocolate factory. Some of the wildest things happen. The book is hilarious. I recommend it and give it five stars.

My Favorite Book of All-Time.......2007-09-23

Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors of all-time but Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has so many elements to the book that make it so great. I think this book would be perfect for middle school kids because of the fantasy part of the book that gets kids thinking beyond what they perceive reality as, it gets them thinking outside the box. Another thing that this book builds is curiosity, in the book the kids are curious to see what is really inside the factory. There is never a boring part of the book. This book also teaches the point of never giving up because Charlie finally won the golden ticket. A great book...

Have you ever wanted to see inside of a chocolate factory? Well in this book a kid named Charlie gets that chance. He finds a golden ticket in the rapper of a chocolate bar. So he and his grandpa along with all the other kids that found tickets get to go to take a tour of the factory. Why they are in there some pretty interesting things happen to all the kids. Each kid finds a way to get in trouble in there own way.
My favorite part of this book is when Charlie and his grandma get in trouble. They drink so soda that makes them float and have to find a way down. Then they think no one saw them but they get caught in the end.
I believe that the theme of this book is that "good things happen to good people. I think this cause Charlie is a nice boy and very good things happen to him. He is quickly rewarded for performing good deeds.
Overall this was a pretty good book. The beginning is a little long and boring but after that it is good book. This is probably a book meant for kids 10 to 13. This book has a lot of imagination in it.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I think that this is a great book, I mean, the funniest part is when the Twits find their living room upside down. The scariest part is when they shrink into their own bodies, into a pile of clothes and shoes! You should read it; I highly recommend it.

Do you like to read about pranks, or monkeys? If you do then I recommend you read this book. There are two people called Mr. and Mrs. Twit. These two are mean, nasty and gruesome. These people play nasty tricks on each other. But now they're going to get a taste of their own medicine by a couple of monkeys. The characters will be Mr. and Mrs. Twit, some monkeys and others. I would rate this book by giving it 9 stars. I would recommend it for a group of boys because it's exciting, funny and a little gross. You should read this book if you're a prankster or if you want to laugh a little. However you might get grossed-out.

crude and silly.......2006-12-06

A fun introduction to dark humour for kids. While it sets an example of everything a relationship should NOT be, I have to admit it was sort of funny to observe the bodily humour and laugh at the two very disturbed anti-heroes. If I were to have a child read this, I would probably insist on doing it With them as opposed to having it read it alone without a few comments here and there about how this is no way to behave in real life. That way, its mischief might be mitigated by a little reality...not to spoil the fun, of course, but just in case the child is too young to recognize sarcasm--and it makes a GREAT read-aloud. Anyhow, it's fun, crude, and silly like much of Dahl's work.

In The Twits we see the daily lives of the two most horrible, dirty, ugly, and mean people in town. They are a married couple who do anything and everything to hurt and annoy one another, and when not bothering one another, torture a family of monkeys by training them to be a circus act. Their favorite food is bird pie, which they make by catching birds in trees by using paste on the branches. PLOT SPOILER: The monkeys turn the tables and defeat their owners who, by being pasted to the floor upside-down, collapse into themselves until they disappear forever.

I bought this book based on a recommendation from a friend, and because I grew up reading Roald Dahl. My 10-year old niece loved it so much she read it to her 6-year old brother the next day.

Worth the read .......2006-09-19

Just the title, THE TWITS, attracted me to this particular book, and with an illustration in the front cover, who wouldn't be curious! It was another coincidence when I picked up to read this book when it was Roald Dahl's Day!

THE TWITS is the story of a couple of, well, twits! Mr Twit is has a nasty, unhygenic, ugly beard and Mrs Twit could be recognized by her glass eye, who lived in a windowless house. They have four pet monkeys, and a huge dead tree where they catch the birds for their weekly bird pie. to past time, they love to play tricks on each other.

When enough is enough, the four monkeys strategize a plan to turn the tables on the Twits with an interesting plan.

I must admit, the best part of this book, was the part where it says, no matter how you look like physically, if you're a good person, it would shine through and that would makes you a beautiful person.

THE TWITS is a really good read and people in every ages should try pick up this book and take you time to read it. It is worth your time.

No Spanish rhyme, but still worthwhile.......2007-04-09

Even though the Spanish portions don't rhyme, I still found the book a worthwhile tool for working with those gaining proficiency in reading the Spanish language. Because it doesn't go to lengths to make it rhyme, the English concepts are easier for beginners to find in the Spanish wording, and the words are easier to grasp the meaning of without a dictionary.

The 1st part is great, but..........2007-03-03

I remember buying and trying to read this book as a young whippersnapper, so I thought I would pick it up for my nephew as a reward for keeping his pants up at school. After receiving this book in the mailbox (I prefer not to use e-lectric mail since I don't trust the darn thing), I realized this is not the same book that was printed 46 years ago. The first part is great and all, but I definitely do not remember the 2nd part. This might be some of Seuss' most eccentric work. Most of the words don't make sense, and don't even correlate to the illustrations. I guess the proofreaders came to work drunk the day they read this pile of horsefeathers. The book blatantly reuses the same illustrations from the first part of the book (as filler I guess), and there's all sorts of spelling errors. I even saw an upside down exclamation point. How'd they miss that one, let alone type it? I don't see that key on my typewriter. I'm not sure if they thought kids would get this far in the book or not. Yes, I understand how the world works these days; everyone's out to make a buck, but come on, they obviously added a bunch of incoherent filler pages so they could charge a premium for the book. The children are your CUSTOMERS, and you just ripped them off, Mr. Seuss.

The worst translation I've ever seen.......2005-08-05

This is a put-down to the Spanish language. It is literally translated- word-for-word, and obviously that does not work with any kind of translation. The translator has to use his/her disgression to transmit the message through whatever type of medium they are working with. In this case, Dr. Seuss's writing is playful and rhyming- this translation does not do this book any justice. They should really never have published this. Even as a non-native speaker of Spanish, I know that this translation is not well-done. My suggestion-- go read "Huevos verdes con jamon", which is wonderful.

AWFUL TRANSLATION!!!.......2005-02-10

We first bought "Huevos Verdes con Jamon" an excellent translation of "Green Eggs and Ham." The translator, Aida E. Marcuse, managed to play with the wording to retain the "Seussian" rhyme, rhythm, and whimsy. Based on that, we bought this bilingual edition without inspecting it first--big mistake!

I am an Anglo-American who learned Spanish as an adult, and I could have done this translation. Carlos Rivera's translation looks like he took a English-Spanish dictionary and went through the text line by line, translating each word in turn. The result is clunky, non-rhyming, and completely devoid of the charm so characteristic of Dr. Seuss's works. A child exposed to this book might come to think of Spanish as a dull, clunky language compared to the fun English text. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Spanish is much easier to rhyme than English, so this translation makes no sense whatsoever.

My suggestion to Random House: call Aida E. Marcuse and get her to do the same quality translation for "El Gato Ensombrerado" that she did for "Huevos Verdes con Jamon."

Horrible, useless.......2005-01-01

Not only does this lose all the wit and charm of the original, it's not even very good as a Spanish primer. I can't imagine a real Spanish speaker using this kind of convoluted syntax. If you're looking for a fun Spanish children's book to read, then "Huevos Verdes con Jamon" (Green Eggs and Ham) is a much better choice, as well as many of the other Aida Marcuse translations. If what you want is a good vocabulary-builder transliteration, try the Spanish versions of P.D. Eastman's Books ("Corre, Perro Corre!" or "Eres tu Mi Mama?"). Anything but this.

A Pinnacle of Dahl's Children's Novels.......2007-06-13

All of Roald Dahl's key works contain common features that make his books special and unique. Apart from gripping tales of the unexpected, the key reason for their appeal is in the treatment of the baddies in the story. However, Dahl counters this rollicking, uproarious and wicked humour with deep relationships between the young protagonist and a sensible grown-up in his social circle. This theme features throughout most if not all his works, and was first introduced when he wrote Danny, the Champion of the World (Puffin Novels), maturing when Dahl wrote The BFG, The Witches (Puffin Novels)and Matilda.

On the surface, Matilda may be a gripping yarn that revolves around Matilda's environment of Crunchem Hall Primary School and the domain of fearsome Miss Trunchbull, arguably the most revolting villain that Dahl ever created. This harks back to his own dark days as a student. As with all his books, Dahl keeps his audience of young readers in mind. Not only is his style easily accessible and lively, but he sides with his young audience through his writing, He draws the characters of Miss Trunchbull and Matilda's repulsive parents such that they convey revolting personas and you wouldn't want to befriend them. Dahl particularly draws the character of the Trunchbul effectively such that we readers can really feel her as a "holy terror that frightend the life out of the pupils and teachers alike". I admit that this book dwells a little too much on the Trunchbull's torturous punishments, but these only serve to make the Trunchbull more real. A signature twist to make this a tale of the unexpected is when Miss Honey reveals that Matilda's father was a crook who sold stolen cars.

However, the understated core of the book should be Matilda herself and her relationship with Miss Honey. His portrayal of this relationship offers distinct echoes of Danny's relationship with his father in Danny the Champion of the World. From the moment that Dahl first introduces us to Matilda's maturity, we know that we are getting to know an extraordinary little girl. In spite of her sensitive and brilliant mind, she is a character who engages our sympathies. Matilda always strives to break free of the thrall of her crooked family, especially her father, who acts and talks like a gangster towards her. Matilda strikes up an acquaintence with Miss Honey and quickly learns of Miss Honey's situation. She is then able to do things in her power to help her and restore her rightful claim to her father's inheritance. This may appear to be self-interest on Matilda's part, but sshe does this because she shows a genuine sympathy to Miss Honey's plight.

In short, this swansong in Dahl's long children's novels stands as an undisputed masterwork and demonstrates the maturity in Dahl's children's writing. It's truly a work that shows Dahl at the top of his game, at the pinnacle of his writing career, and sums up all that his children's writing has come to stand for. (Apparently he spent 20 years writing this book.) Although I could have done with less coverage of the Trunchbull's cruelty, this book is still an undisputed Dahl classic that deserves to be up there with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Fantastic Mr. Fox and The BFG.

I think this is a good book. The part I like the most,(you might too,) is when Matilda writes on the blackboard,( controlling the chalk with her eyes) "I will get you!" I feel so sad when the Trunchbull attack the kids with her strong right arm. I say you should read it.

Roald Dahl is the author fo many enchanting books for young readers. Matilda is a fun book about a girl with extraordinary talents. As a precocious three-year-old she starts go to the library and reads all the books there, starting with the children's books, of course. Matilda is the daughter of neglective parents who fail to see Matilda's talents. Undaunted, Matilda finds her creative and fun ways to get attention and make mischief.

Matilda, a little girl who loves to read and write begs her parents to let her go to school. But when she gets there her principal, Miss Trunchbull isn't very nice. Her teacher Miss Honey is an angle and loves Matilda. Matilda realizes she has special powers and can lift things and drop things with out touching them. But when she goes over to Miss Honey's house she finds out a secret about Miss Trunchbull that links to Miss Honey! This book is exciting and has a happy ending for Matilda and Miss Honey, but not such a happy ending for Miss Trunchbull and Matilda's father who sells used cars. He uses the cheapest materials to fix his cars! But some policemen are watching this family very carefully. I give this book two thumbs up and stars!

Matilda is about a brilliant young girl entering the 2nd grade. Not only does her principal hate Matilda, but her family doesn't treat her well either. With the help of her teacher, Ms. Honey, Matilda uses her smart mind and special powers to make her's and many others' lives better.

My favorite part in Matilda is when she uses her special powers to get Ms. Honey's house back. Agatha (Matilda's principal, also known as the Trunchbull) was the guardian of Jenny (Ms. Honey's first name) when her dad, Magnus, mysteriously passed away. The Trunchbull hid Magnus' will, stating that the house should be in Ms. Honey's hands. After Ms. Honey tells Matilda this story, Matilda makes a plan that will get Jenny's house back for sure. One day in class, when Agatha is teaching a lesson, Matilda uses her special powers to lift up the chalk with her eyes, and start writing on the chalkboard. "Agatha, this is Magnus. This is Magnus. And you better believe it. Give my Jenny her wages. Give my Jenny her house. Then get out of here. If you don't, I will come and get you. I will come and get you like you got me. I am watching you Agatha." This makes the Trunchbull faint, right in the classroom, and after that, Ms. Honey got her house back, and Agatha left and never came back again.

If you have seen and liked the movie, you should definitely read the book. The book is just like the movie, except the movie has a few differences, and extra scenes. I would recommend this book because it is funny, but also serious about the things Matilda has to deal with in her life. This book teaches people not to give up, and that anyone can achieve anything, if they put their mind to it. It is an inspiration to all of us. Matilda is an easy read, and I recommend it to anyone that reads adventure stories, because Matilda's journey is unforgettable.

Garfields first 6 books were good.
Now... here comes GARFIELD SITS AROUND THE HOUSE. Funnier and fatter, see garfield as he goes fishing, asks 'Have you kicked your dog today?' and eats his cake for his 4th birthday but eats the candles on fire as well. I really enjoyed it. It is one of my favorate books. I'm the only peson in my class who likes Garfield. It is so good.

The best Garfield book of the early 1980's.......2003-03-22

I'll never forget the first time that I read this book back in the 7th grade when my younger brother checked out at the library and this book is Garfield's best book yet cause the drawings were getting better and they were starting to come up with more ideas.
The funniest moments were when Garfield ate the whole cake when the candles were still lit on the cake, when Odie eats Garfield's burger and says ribbit, his bad case of Monday's, or when Garfield beets on Odie.

If you love Garfield books, then this book is highly recommended cause it is the funniest book of the early 1980's.

Title explanation: All the reviews before this one seem old. The latest one I found was in 2004 and (believe it or not) some even were made in the 1990s. Title explanation end. My sister, Russian Blue Witch, checked this out from the library one day The story is nice but weird because Dr. Seuss often leaves out questions in his stories. Why did the daisy sprout out of Mayzie's head? How did it sprout out of Mayzie's head? The same with The Cat in the Hat. Where did the Cat in the Hat come from? The Acme Child Cheer agency? LOL! (Laugh out loud.) The story is also kinda boring, but I guess it's fine. A con is how they spell Mayzie. I know, I know, you can spell names any way you want to, but it is still spelled oddly so when I searched for this on amazon.com to write this review, I just searched "Daisy-head" because I forgot how they spelled Mayzie. I don't get why people don't think it is by Dr. Seuss, though. Also, I am a bigger-age kid and I didn't make out practically the first time so for easy reading, this is a no go. And it's weird: The petals just fall off, the daisy doesn't disappear. Good moral, though. What I think is really interesting is the story behind it: it was left in a drawer after Dr. Seuss died. What everyone is saying that this isn't Seuss's real work, I believe. Seuss uses language that is easy to understand for children, and they used rather big words in this. I do like this book but if I read it to a kid they would only understand some of it.

Dr. Seuss left this book in a drawer when he died. He obviously didn't think enough of it himself to publish it, but now that he's dead I guess anything's fair game. The illustrations are designed to fool you into thinking he did them, but he didn't. Yet this book says "by Dr. Seuss" on the cover just like The Lorax or Cat in the Hat. Deceitful.

Hands down, this is my daughter's *favorite* Seuss book. At 3 & 1/2, she can practically recite it word for word. I was saddened to see the other negative reviews about the book, because I like the message in it - 1) Your family & friends will always love you, and 2) Fame isn't all it's cracked up to be. The book can be the spark for some interesting & thoughtful conversations on values.

Siempre he tenido muy en cuenta el sentido del humor de las personas. Y creo que detrás del sentido del humor está el sentido del interior. Algunas personas tienen el sentido del humor más agudo, pero esto no quiere decir que todos no tengamos un lado humorístico. En este libro FREUD habla como perfectamente lo resume el título de su libro, sobre el humor y su relación con el subconsciente. Qué nos motiva a hacer un chsite, qué hay detrás de un comentario mordaz, los chistes que tienen un propósito específico. Los chistes hostiles, los obscenos... "Jokes lies in technique".

For Freud jokes were not just fooling around, not primarily a means of play, not in short something of trivial importance. Rather they were expressions of our deepest instinctual drives and needs. Like errors in everyday life they are governed by an inner intentionality, and purposiveness.
Here it might be said that Freud exaggerates or is too extreme in his point- of- view and does not explain all humor by it.
