Book Description

It's been more than six months since her husband's brutal death, and Julia Ransom is just beginning to breathe again. She loved her husband, renowned psychic August Ransom, but the media frenzy that followed his murder sapped what little strength she had left. Now, after dinner with friends, strolling along San Francisco's Pier 39, she realizes that she's happy. Standing at the railing, she savors the sounds around her-tourists, seals on a barge-and for a moment enjoys the sheer normalcy of it all. And then it comes to an end.

Out of nowhere she's approached by a respectable-looking man who distracts her with conversation before violently attacking her and throwing her the railing. If it hadn't been for Special Agent Cheney Stone, out to stretch his legs between courses at a local restaurant, Julia would have vanished into the bay's murky depths. Not only does he save her from a watery grave, but he senses a connection between her assault and her husband's death, and sets out to serve as her protector while reopening August Ransom's murder investigation.

Meanwhile, in Maestro, Virginia, Sheriff Dixon Noble-last seen in Point Blank-still mourns his wife, Christie, who vanished hree years earlier. His life, too, is just getting back to normal when he learns of a San Francisco woman named Charlotte Pallack, whose shocking resemblance to Christie sends Dix across the country. Though he knows in his heart that she can't possibly be his wife, Dix is compelled to see her with his own eyes. Once in San Francisco, Dix and Cheney's paths inevitably cross. With the help of agents Dillon Savich and Lacey Sherlock, whose San Francisco connections prove essential in unlocking the mystery behind Charlotte Pallack's identity as well as the forces behind Julia Ransom's attempted murder, Sheriff Noble and Agent Stone push deep into a complex world of psychics and poseurs. As the stakes and the body count rise, Savich, Sherlock, Dix, and Cheney fight for answers-and their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A shocking truth with many lives at stake........2007-10-06

Catherine Coulter's DOUBLE TAKE enjoys a dual narration by veteran Sandra Burr and Phil Gigante and packs in a thriller revolving around murder, romance, and more. A sheriff's investigation of an unusual woman will lead to a shocking truth with many lives at stake.

5 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-10-06

Received this book as ordered. Very good read, I can't wait until her next one!

4 out of 5 stars Another fast-paced thriller from Catherine Coulter.......2007-09-25

I wasn't disappointed in this latest installment of Catherine Coulter's FBI series. It was wonderful to once again "meet up with" Dillon and Sherlock (and their son). I quite enjoyed it, and hope Catherine Coulter will continue adding more books to this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great FBI Thriller.......2007-09-22

I loved Double Take. It is the latest book in the FBI Thrillers from Cauther Coulter. All are great.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of Exciting Scenes and more!.......2007-09-21

Sometimes I enjoy fast paced thrillers, but when I want a well-thought out mystery novels then I read a book by Catherine Coulter. I have enjoyed her FBI series books with Sherlock and Dillon and in "Double Take" is was good to see Cheney and Dix make their return after appearing in Point Blank, which happens to be one of my favorites.

Overall, I didn't think this was one of Ms. Coulter's best books. I had a hard time keeping track of the characters and almost got to the point of keeping a score card as to "who" was "who". For me this "family tree" of characters caused a lot frustration on my part. However, let me say that mid-way through the book the story moved along at a brisk pace giving me plenty of exciting scenes. Soon, I found myself reading page and page until I finished it. Except for a few "kinks" in the story Catherine Coulter didn't disappoint me in this terrific story. And as always I look forward to reading her next novel.

For you mystery readers, take a look at the gripping novel The Monopoly Factor by Robert L. Saunders. I have to shout out that this mystery was an impressive read and I wholeheartedly recommend it to those of you that are searching for a refreshing story and writing style. The story will keep you reading non-stop and you'll find that you can't help but cheer on Barry and Susan. Don't overlook this book you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Star.......2007-06-26

Another excellent book by Chris D'Lacey. And the BIG news is that this was NOT the last book in the series as had been reported. Book FOUR - The Fire Eternal - has been completed and is due for release in the UK in Sept 2007. I think it will be available in the US in March of 2008!

I can't wait! Check out his website for info on the new book, but beware, some of the things you 'thought' happened at the end of book 3, aren't quite what you think. :-)

Is it March yet???????

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!.......2007-05-06

My sons love this series! They have quickly read each one, and eagerly wait for the next to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-21

This is the third book in the "fire" trilogy from author Chris D'Lacey. My 10 year old daughter and I loved it! But it really leaves you wanting more and fortunately we learned from his web site that he is working on book number four "Fire Eternal" which should be released soon. These stories are about the legend of the dragons' firetear;the story of Gawain and Gweneviere and the polar bears. There is magic and mystery and adventure. A very good read for kids and parents alike.

4 out of 5 stars Dragons Rule.......2007-03-06

If you would like a dragon tooth for yourself; then you should read Fire Star.

This book is about a man named David trying to write book on the events that happen in the Canadian Artic. After David returned home everyone in the house including the dragons greeted him. In about the middle of the book David returns to the Artic because he receives an urgent message to return. The message contained information about a mysterious comet landing.

This book would have been better if there weren't many characters. There should have been at least three dragons and four main characters. The things I liked about this book that it is full of mysteries. I would recommend this book for people of the ages of ten to fifteen. I rated this book a four stars because of some of the boring parts.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Star was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-08

Do not read unless you have read the book or enjoy spoilers.
Fire Star was great!!! There were a lot of things I did not expect. Who knew that Liz had an ex boyfriend! Or that there is an alien race called the Fain that has no physical form whatsoever! I did not expect Tootega and Dr. Gergstrom would die. Three things I did not expect were that Gwilanna would get frozen in ice, Dr. Bergstrom is a polar bear (I think he was Thoran), and that Bonnington would turn into a tiger. The only part I don't like about this book is that David dies! Once again, Fire Star was great.

"August was the month when flies started to become a problem, buzzing round the dung heaps in the corner of every farmyard and hovering over the open cesspits of human refuse that were located outside every house."

Although daily dangers were many, housing uncomfortable, and the dominant smells unpleasant indeed, life in England at the turn of the previous millennium was not at all bad, write journalists Lacey and Danziger. "If you were to meet an Englishman in the year 1000," they continue, "the first thing that would strike you would be how tall he was--very much the size of anyone alive today." The Anglo-Saxons were not only tall, but also generally well fed and healthy, more so than many Britons only a few generations ago. Writing in a breezy, often humorous style, Lacey and Danziger draw on the medieval Julius Work Calendar, a document detailing everyday life around A.D. 1000, to reconstruct the spirit and reality of the era. Light though their touch is, they've done their homework, and they take the reader on a well-documented and enjoyable month-by-month tour through a single year, touching on such matters as religious belief, superstition, medicine, cuisine, agriculture, and politics, as well as contemporary ideas of the self and society. Readers should find the authors' discussions of famine and plague a refreshing break from present-day millennial worries, and a very stimulating introduction to medieval English history. --Gregory McNamee

3 out of 5 stars Amusing.......2007-06-25

Lacey's work is a good primer, even useful in a basic undergraduate British history class. However, I would not recommend this for an upper level or graduate level student. Its intention of giving and introduction to social values and practices at the time under consideration is well executed, but that is all it does.

4 out of 5 stars Making history enjoyable and entertaining.......2007-04-23

This is one of the most "readable" history books I've come across. To say that it is entertaining is NOT a criticism, but a compliment. Why does history have to be dry and pedantic in order to have value? I learned more about life at the turn of the 1st millennium than I have in reading a dozen other more scholarly tomes. This is the way history SHOULD be written.

Naturally, it is not absolutely complete and all-encompassing (though, given the dearth of contemporary material, most writings are merely speculation anyway). But it is an excellent starting point. If you are intriqued, the books 7-page bibliography should suffice for additional reading.

5 out of 5 stars You think you've got it rough..........2007-03-29

...then try living in , say, England in the year 1000 A.D.
Although I read this book approximately 2000 A.D.,
I still remember the profundity of the book 6-7 years later.
The author does a fine job of placing the reader within
the circumstances of actually living in the year 1000.
I couldn't help over and over again wondering to myself:
"How could I deal with that?" or "Could I deal with that?"

This book expands the mind as much as any science fiction
book--and this stuff really happened!

The reason I'm reviewing this book is because Amazon
recommended the book because of another book I've ordered.
The fact that I would take time to review the book years
after reading it speaks very well of the book.

Easy to read, yet profound: sounds like a great combination to me.

3 out of 5 stars Trivial Pursuit circa 1000 A.D........2007-01-06

This is not a bad book...easy to read and full of interesting tidbits. If you are doing other reading on Saxon England, as I am, this book gives the period a little flavor.

The book is loosely based around the work calendar, giving you one chapter for each month of the year. Each chapter describes rather superficially the kind of work typically done by farmers and tradesmen that month. The style of the book is very light, covering tidbits such as remedies for various ailments, punishments for various crimes, typical battle formations, and the sign language used by monks living under vows of silence.

One thing this book does not do, however, is live up to its title. In the book's defense, it is deceptively simple---it really does contain a great deal of information. But it covers none of it particularly deeply or in any kind of an organized fashion that might allow you to paint a vivid image in your head of what life was really like in 1000 A.D. Hoping to get that from this book would be like trying to get a sense of life at the turn of the second millenium by reading through the questions and answers in a game of Trivial Pursuit.

4 out of 5 stars The way school books should be.......2006-12-17

If school books were pesented this way, more students would be interested in history. Easy to read, enlightening, thought provoking.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for all ages.......2007-09-25

I borrowed this book from a friend. I saw it in book orders, but wanted to read before I bought. Now I have all three to series. Now you have to understand, I am what I call a rereader, which means that I reread my books, no one time read for me. Also, I love fantasy books. If you don't like books in the fantasy genre, then you'll probably not like this. But I gained so much from this book and it teaches great lessons for kids. Getting along with others and nature. Friendship. Death. Caring for others and things. Ect. The story is about a college student that rents a room from a lady and her child. The student(David) quickly becames involved in their lives. The Landlady make dragons out of clay, but not everything is what it seems. Throw in a young girl with a soft heart for squirrels and you have a great story. Great to read with the kids before bedtime.

5 out of 5 stars Not as expected but a great story.......2007-08-25

Not what I expected but this children's book is stilla delight to read. It IS about dragons, but also about a squirrel. The dragons are everywhere in Mrs Pennykettle's house and when David moves in as a lodger, he is goven his own special dragon. He doesn't understand at first, the significance of the dragons and helps Lucy tracks down an injured Squirrel. For Lucy's birtday he writes the adventures of Conkers the Squirrel with the help of his new dragon.

The writing is perfect for its age group and not dumbed down so adults will be happy to read the text to their children at night. I look forwards to book two.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible digression - hardly any dragons.......2007-07-25

I was not impressed with this book at all.

I picked it up because of an intriguing story about dragon figurines that come to life - something that struck me as interesting and original.

However, this story is NOT about that.

The story mainly centers around a 20-year old boy who acts like a 6 year old, and ends up dropping lines that made me wonder whether he was regressing in personality and age. The other main character is a 10-year old who is obsessed with squirrels, and it seems the author was obsessed as well.

Honestly, it seems like the author WANTED this to be about miniature dragons coming to life... but got off on such a digress that it turned into a story about saving a squirrel. This is one of those stories where he digressed so much, but probably still loved his horribly written story, that he couldn't bear to axe the parts that had nothing to do with the storyline.

Frankly, the characters are very flat, and downright annoying. There is no way a 20-year-old male would act in the ways described in the story. As I mentioned before, his personality seems to regress before my very eyes...

I don't want to give away the end, but it was the most horribly contrived thing I've ever read.

While I'm not certain of others, I must admit I am disappointed that I was lured into purchasing this book.

5 out of 5 stars A book I wish would never end!.......2007-04-04

In the Fire Within David moves into Liz and Lucy's house. He is intrigued
when he finds out that Liz makes clay dragons for a living. Liz makes a dragon called Gadzooks for David. That is when he discovered that the dragons are real.Gadzooks helps him make a story about the squirls that Useto live in there back yard.he finds out that his story came true!! Conker the main Squril is cool.

I am a girl and i still love this dragon book!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Fire Within Book Report.......2007-03-15

This book has a main character named David, he is a 20 years old

college student and he live in a house with his mom and dad. This book is

a fantasy book so it take place in a fantasy world. David became a tenant

in a strange house filled with clay dragons and it was owned by Liz and

a enourmous fire power within him but David need to know how to unleash

Review By Mohamad Sabha
this book is a graet and challenging adventure woven with excitement and love. Its intense along the way but you find your way back home.

5 out of 5 stars Much better.......2007-09-07

This book 2 in the trilogy, is a much more rounded book. It is about the dragons and has more action than that first book. The story concentrates on the household when, due to a foolish wish, a strange and strict lady turns up at the Pennykettle house one day and takes over.
An exciting read for your child or YA reader.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING book.......2007-05-23

If you have read The Fire Within, then read this book. It has much more info and features more characters. I didnt like the end, because it was a little mushy, but the rest of it was better than the first one. Im waiting for the 4th one to come out, so it going to be a while because the third book came out this year. So again if you read the first book READ THIS ONE!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING BOOK.......2007-02-16

If you enjoyed The Fire Within then the sequel Ice Fire will thrill you. This book expands on the dragons that were mentioned in the first book of the series. David Rain is attending college in a small town called Wayward and his new professor Dr. Bergstrom invites him to write an essay about dragons. David could win a trip to the Arctic and do some research with the professor. There are many strange perplexing incidents that occur in the story. When his friend Zanna accidently quickens an egg that belongs to Liz an ominous person shows up. Liz's Aunt Gwyneth moves into the house to help with the new dragon. David has a premonition that the Aunt is up to no good. With the help of his dragons and the professor he finds out the real reason for the Aunt's visit. Does He win the essay contest? I guess you will have to read the book to find out. The dragons are tricky, charming and they are able to elude the Aunt. The ending leads up to the next book in the series Firestar

4 out of 5 stars Icefire.......2007-01-26

I have alot of favorite books. This book, however, was an all time favorite. My all time favorite book was Icefire, by Chris D'Lacey. This book is second, of three, of a science fiction series. This book is about a tenant, David Rain, and his landlady's family. His landlady, Elizabeth Pennykettle, is a potter. She makes clay dragons and sells them in a market. Mrs. Pennykettle made a special dragon, for David, named Gadzooks. David is in his second year of college and one of his teachers is having an essay contest. Lucy, Liz's daughter, made David a wishing dragon. David, curious of this, wishes to see the Icefire. Once he does this, Liz's "Aunt" shows up. As she begins to settle in, she turns the house upsde down. You will have to rread the book to find out what happens next. This book was, to me, a very good book. I think this because it is very addicting to keep reading it. Also, there is another book in the series, Fire Star. These books are best suitable for any age group.

4 out of 5 stars Great Anthology.......2003-04-14

This book is an very good anthology of hispanic writers from the 1800's to the present. It contains short stories, essays and poetry. In it's pages it includes essays from José Martí and Simón Bolivar. In the short stories categories, it includes writers like Rulfo, Alejo Carpentier, and Rosario Ferré. It also has some poems by José Martí and Gertrudis López de Avellaneda. This book is a great source for class or a great addition to your personal library.

5 out of 5 stars Introducción a la literatura Hispano-Americana.......2000-09-24

In my upper level Spanish college class, I used this book last semester, and am using it again this semester. It is a wonderful book, with short stories and poems written by the best authors in Spanish literature. The questions at the end of each work help the reader to understand the meaning of each story, as well as to delve deeper into the Latino/Castillian culture. More difficult or unusual vocabulary words are footnoted at the bottom of each page. I highly recommend this book. It will be especially enjoyed by a native speaker or anyone fairly fluent in Spanish.

These were my introduction to the author and now I am hooked! I can't wait to read them all!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent read.......2007-05-06

I was recently introduced to Coulter's writings by a fellow mystery lover. An excellent recommendation! I have spent several nights staying up into the wee hours with this (and her other) page turners!! This book is a two-for-one treat. Highly recommended:-)

4 out of 5 stars FBI Suspense.......2006-12-08

I enjoyed reading the The Cove. I was on the edge of my seat from when I first was introduced to the girl with the black wig and red lipstick. I never would had figured out who was doing the killing! Never in million years. I was so shocked to learn WHO DID IT! If you're looking for a GOOD mystery-suspense story pick this one up.

I don't have much to say about The Maze except it was slow and had no point to it whatsoever.

3 out of 5 stars For new Coulter fans only.......2006-07-08

If you are new to Catherine Coulter's FBI series, this is definitely a great book to buy. But for those who own Coulter titles, this is a reprint of two previous novels and should be labeled accordingly. I realize that authors need to reprint to attract a new audience, but there should be some consideration to longtime fans.

3 out of 5 stars Loved The Cove -- Hated The Maze!!!.......2006-03-21

I am a collector of this author -- I think I have everything she has written - and I can firmly say The Cove is my all time favorite! I love the entire book! The beginning from page one gets you quickly firmly hooked and the rest is a fast page turner -- I could not put it down. It is one I really care that I own the hardback & will not loan to anyone!
On the other hand I found The Maze to be my least favorite -- I found it to be very depressing & it gave me bad dreams. The story is too sad with a vilian who is much too dark & evil. Too dark for a Coulter fan! Coulter usually makes me feel good about the good guys, not afraid of the bad ones!
I would advise you find The Cove as a stand alone hardback and skip The Maze and this new double set............

Book Description

Sex, Sin & Brooklyn, is a sexy novel about three competitive women who won't let anything or anyone stand in the way of their happiness. These characters indulge in sex, commit the ultimate sin and then return to the safety of their homes in Brooklyn.

Jinx has lived a sheltered life after the tragic death of her parents. She clings to the nurturing love of her grandmother, Nana, and doesn't look much further. When a humble, unassuming man comes into her life, she finally begins to live. She's enamored as they take off into a whirlwind romance and let's her guard down and in the blink of an eye—he's gone. Now, using sex as a defense mechanism she vows to never love again. She never counted on her heart not listening….

Kesha is the slick talking, .357 carrying, sexy-detective working the Narcotics Unit of the 88th Precinct. The lure of a Brooklyn thug is Kesha's weakness. Although she has made a vow to serve and protect—it doesn't stop her from mingling with the drug-hustlers that she grew up with. Insatiable in the bedroom and unstoppable in the squad room, she's more than a handful. Will she honor her oath and take it to her grave or will the streets put her there first?

Breezy has lived the ghetto-fabulous life from the perks of being daddy's little girl. Growing up in a plush, Brooklyn brownstone, driving the latest whips and sporting the top designers the writing is already on the walls: Breezy gets what Breezy wants! On a random night out with friends, Breezy meets the man of her dreams. Coincidentally, her cousin Nicoli has already found the love of her life. The only problem is he's the same man…the charismatic and wealthy, Black King. Since all is fair in love and war they both plunge heart first into the game of love, lies and deceit. This is a recipe for drama…May the best bitch win!

3 out of 5 stars Slow at first, but an expected end.......2007-10-10

This book was hard to get into at first, but midways through the book it picked up and came to an very good end.

There were several characters to me that could have been left out in my opinion. I would say more, but I dont want to give the book away.

5 out of 5 stars Crystal's pen game is tight!.......2007-09-16

Sex, Sin & Brooklyn is a novel evolving around three divas who are friends in peculiar ways.

Jinx, a miraculous survivor of a plane crash (in which both her parents died) lives a simple life with her grandmother. Jilted before by a man, Jinx vows never to love again - but her hormones ain't listening!

Breezy, is just that - careful and breezy! Because papa takes care of everything for her so that she'll never want for anything in life. He schools his little girl how to make major power moves in her life.

Then there's Kesha, the "down-with-it" police officer and friend of both girls. But troubles at home and misguided judgement on the job is making uncontrollable havoc in Kesha's life.

The twist in the story is complicated by Nicoli, Breezy's cousin. The two have something (or should I say "someone") in common - his name is Black.

In a twisted fashion, Black could ultimately be the final demise of these three friends - Jinx, Breezy and Kesha.

The author's story burns with suspense as you continue to read this novel.

I found Jinx's ending to be somewhat incredible - but way to go, Crystal!

5 out of 5 stars Where Do You Get These Stories From?.......2007-09-14

Winslow has outdone herself with another one. A mix of drama and mystery intertwine the lives of characters Jinx, Breezy, and Kesha. Winslow's characters are so real and downright hood! Her books are never dull for one moment and the endings are always unpredictable. My only gripe is that everybody can't be beautiful; throw an ugly chick up in the cut every now and then. If you want to get caught up in regular drama that's not your own, keep on reading Winslow!

5 out of 5 stars Who says you can't judge a book by its cover?.......2007-08-06

There's an old saying that states 'You can't judge a book by its cover'. This may be true some of the time, but in the case of Sex, Sin & Brooklyn, the cover is HOT and the story is even hotter. From the very beginning I was pulled into the lives of Breezy, Kesha, Jinx, Nicoli, and Black King. With each page the anticipation built to an all time high and I found myself unable to put the book down. Not once did the story lag or fall short of my expectations. But I should be used to that by now. Since Life, Love and Lonliness, Crystal Lacey Winslow has never let me down. This is the very definition of a page turner. Excellent job.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener.......2007-07-23

This book left me speechless and made me realize you cannot trust anyone -not even your friends. Crystal Lacey Winslow did her thang and I was turning the pages so fast, I'm surprised I didn't get any paper cuts. Keep up the good work girl. Can't wait for your next one!!!!!!!!

From ancient times to the present day, the story of England has been laced with drama, intrigue, courage, and passion-a rich and vibrant narrative of heroes and villains, kings and rebels, artists and highwaymen, bishops and scientists. Now, in Great Tales from English History, Robert Lacey tells those remarkable stories as only a great writer can: combining impeccable accuracy with the timeless drama that has made these stories live for centuries.

This volume begins in 7150 BC with the life and death of Cheddar Man and ends in 1381 with Wat Tyler and the Peasants' Revolt. We meet the Greek navigator Pytheas, whose description of the woad-painted Celts yielded pretanniké ("the land of the painted people"), which became the Latin word Britannia. We learn what the storytellers really meant when they described Lady Godiva's "naked" ride through town. And we discover the truth behind the tales of King Arthur and the infamous Hobbehod, later known as Robin Hood.

With insight, humor, and fascinating detail, Robert Lacey brings brilliantly to life the stories that made England. From Ethelred the Unready to Richard the Lionheart, the Venerable Bede to Piers the Ploughman, this is, quite simply, history as history should be told.

5 out of 5 stars History's best bits.......2007-10-10

A few days ago I finished Great Tales From English History by Robert Lacey. When I first saw this book I knew it had potential; to me, presentation has a lot to do with my overall love for a book and this one is beautiful. After checking it out from my library when I worked there, I found Mr. Lacey's writing to be exciting, interesting, and informative. A few weeks ago I set to reading the whole thing and I'm glad I did. The book presents short stories about moments from English history that you may or may not have heard of.

From the introduction: "Brief though each chapter is, Great Tales seeks to create a coherant, chronological picture of our island story, while following the guiding principle that all men and women have heroism inside them - along with generous and fascinating measures of incompetence, apathy, evil and lust." The book is also beautifully illustrated by Fred van Deelen and Mr. Lacey has included fantastic end notes and bibliographies that you can investigate if you find a particular subject interesting. If you have any interest in English history, pick this one up at your local library and you'll probably find yourself reading the short chapters in just a few minutes each. You'll not be dissapointed! (And if you finish this and want more, try Great Tales vol. 2 and Great Tales vol. 3).

4 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of early English history.......2007-09-15

The first of three volumes, this narrative presents the history of the British Isles in a way that reminds one of how folktales must have once been told. The tales begin with Cheddar Man and end with the story of Wat Tyler, spanning the years of 7150 BC to 1381.

Lacey intersperses stories of famous royals with little known people, which makes this a truly unique book. I really like learning stories that explain various parts of the English culture.

I highly recommend this series!

5 out of 5 stars Thouroughly enjoyable as an audiobook! (A history teacher's review).......2007-03-25

Robert Lacey has done something that many writers have failed to do (unfortunately) - he has written history in a fun, accessible, easy to grasp manner. After all, as Lacey points out in his introduction, the "history" and "story" come from the same Latin root word. Essentially, history should be the simple story of how things happened, to the best of the teller's knowledge.

Lacey's power as a storyteller is highlighted here in spades. He narrates his audiobook as well so there is the added bonus of hearing the author add nuance to the reading - essentially reading it the way he meant it to be heard.

The stories are short and entertaining. Only a couple of times in 5 hours and 45 minutes of listening did I find my attention wandering. This is a terrificly fun experience for any history lover. Full of interesting tidbits but not lacking in the larger themes or commentaries.

I am going to look for volumes 2 & 3 and hopefully he has written or is writing his volumes on Scotland and Ireland as well.

Bravo!

I give this one an enthusiastic A+.

5 out of 5 stars as fun as history gets........2007-02-12

this book covers english history from 7150 BC up to 1381 AD, and is about as fun as history gets. short chapters touching on the big names and incidents, as well as some little known ones, fly by too fast owing to the lively writing that makes this a complete page-turner. I finished it in 2 days and immediatley picked up its successor volume. wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Handy guide for non-Brits.......2007-02-08

This volume and its two companions are a handy guide to major events and people in England's history. In this volume, Lacey skirts around some of the earliest events and people, not providing much in depth and ignoring even a mention of some facts that might help him be a little less dismissive of some of the stories. But once he gets to 1066 and the battle of Hastings, his details become much clearer, and he is a good help to non-Brits who might want to hone up on names and events with some but not too many details. The three volumes end in the 20th century, so you know it covers a lot in a small space (or three small spaces). The chapters are all short - two to six pages - and are a handy guide for non-Brits. Even Brits could use them as a refresher course.
