4 out of 5 stars P-S nonsense.......2007-08-10

PLEASE tell somebody to eliminate the "-P-S-" abbreviation! (Fig. 9-12B, p. 201)
For years, I am fighting this imbecile representation of phosphate-sugar chain that persists in many, many textbooks, including Klug et al.

Nobody should abbreviate sugar as S (especially after Hershey-Chase experiment explained a bit earlier). Ask the Chemistry department!
"P" for phosphate is bad enough as well; so many students do not know the difference between phosphate and phosphorus!

Also, on Fig. 10-8 deoxyriboses have two strange features:
(a) they seem to miss C5' atom completely; (b) if P here is phosphate (-PO4), as I hope, then what is an extra oxygen doing here? Or "P" on Fig. 10-8 is different P from that on Fig. 9-10?

2 out of 5 stars Difficult for Beginners.......2003-12-29

If you are taking an introduction to genetics course, this book is difficult to understand. It seemingly presents the concepts for those that have had previous knowledge of genetics. The chapters on Mendelian Genetics, Mitosis, and Meiosis are done well, but later chapters dealing with regulation, mutation, transcription, and translation are difficult to understand. The pictures are not very helpful, either. If this book is required for your introductory genetics course, i recommend getting another book in addition to this one.

4 out of 5 stars very interesting concepts for learning.......2000-12-31

I took this course because it is a required course for my major. After getting into the first month of classes, I started to read the textbook. Genetics is a very interesting topic, and this book displays this. It breaks down concepts for the student to understand, and has great photos and figures. There are also one to two page "stories" which relate to the concept of the chapter at the end of each chapter. These are real stories of history or happenings of how Genetics has severely affected people. There is also a review and questions at the end of each chapter. Overall, I would give the book a four star rating.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Meet all of the barnyard animals from the new "Charlotte's Web" movie.......2006-12-16

E.B. White's classic children's story "Charlotte's Web" was first published in 1952 and made into a successful animated film in 1973 with Debbie Reynolds as the voice of the title character. With all the advances in movie making magic regarding talking pigs, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood got around to making a "live action" version of the beloved story. The film opened in the United States today with Julia Roberts doing the voice of Charlotte, Dominic Scott Kay the voice of Wilbur, and Dakota Fanning as Fern. For youngsters who are enthralled with the movie, "Charlotte's Web: The Essential Guide" allows them to learn more about Charlotte's world.

This is a DK book so that means there are 20 "chapters," each of which is a 2-page spread, except for the 4-page spread that opens up to show The Farm that serves as a map of Wilbur's journey from the Arables' to the Zuckerman's. This also means that there are well over 100 photographs from the movie on these 48-pages, including a detailed look at Templeton's lair (a shiny key makes an attractive ceiling decoration). The book includes a salutation to the readers from Joy, Aranea, and Nellie, a trio of names you should recognize if you have seen the movie or the animated film (or gone old school and read the book). Then you get to follow Wilbur's journey from the Zukerman's barn to his appearance at the County Fair. Along the way young readers will learn about facts about pigs and other animals, the big words Charlotte uses (like "magnum opus"), and who is Henry Fussy.

Granted, calling this guide "essential" is overplaying things a bit, but for young readers who like the movie this book that Amanda Li has put together will certainly let them find out more about not only the characters in the film but the animals in the real world. I was just sort of surprised Dakota Fanning, who plays Fern, is still doing what would be considered a children's film, but then I remembered she does not become a teenager until next February. Anyhow, if on the way home from the film your kids are all excited about Charlotte, Wilbur and the rest of the gang, this book will allow them to prolong the experience and add a little education to the mix.

Book Description

Charlotte thought she was fine. After a childhood spent traveling around the world with her eccentric artist mother, she is content to have a quiet life, make herbal remedies, and play video games. But when her mother dies in a bizarre sculpture accident, Charlotte's life is turned upside down. Before she even has time to grasp the reality of her mother's death, her supposedly dead father appears and they are forced to live together to satisfy the terms of her mother's will. Reluctantly living in Soho with a father she has never met before, Charlotte begins to change in unexpected ways, even pursing her hidden desire to take acting class. Will Charlotte survive her mother's legacy, let alone a year with this stranger? Are there enough herbal remedies in the world to save her? In The Essential Charlotte, author Libby Schmais displays the same warmth, wit, and honesty that created so many fans of The Perfect Elizabeth. At its core, The Essential Charlotte is a novel about family and the strange and marvelous ways that it makes you who you are.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An essential read..........2006-01-21

I read The Perfect Elizabeth some years ago and thought I'd give Libby Schmais another whirl. The Essential Charlotte, like The Perfect Elizabeth, is another enchanting novel about getting to know a significant other in your life as well as oneself. Charlotte is a shy research librarian who lives on the edge by way of her eccentric mother, chic artist Corrine. But when her mother dies, Charlotte feels at a loss. The one good thing is that she'll inherit her mother's trendy Soho loft. But there is one condition: she has to live there with her father for one year. There is one problem: she doesn't know her father. In fact, she had no idea her father had been alive until after her mother died! How is she going to cope living with a stranger, even if he is her father? There are some twists throughout the novel.

The Essential Charlotte is full of wit and charm. The backdrop of the art world as well as the obsession with New York real estate sets the perfect tone for this story. Charlotte is a great heroine and I was able to relate with her every day problems and inner musings. The novel sometimes drifted to the usual chick-lit, single-thirty-something-woman-living-in-New-York angst, but Schmais writes the aforementioned things with wit and insight and therefore making this novel unique. Her writing style is similar to the author Jennifer Weiner at times. I recommend The Essential Charlotte and I look forward to reading more stuff by this author.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic story........2004-10-15

Meet Charlotte, a quiet and shy girl who wants so desperately to go unnoticed. Until her mother, an eccentric worldly artist, suddenly dies and leaves Charlotte the shock of her life. Charlotte's father, whom she thought to be long dead, is alive and well. And now for Charlotte to gain possession of her mother's loft, her father is now also her roommate.

Charlotte's quiet life is now turned upside down as she tries to survive this year with a stranger. Follow Charlotte as she finally finds the meaning in her life and what it truly means to have a family.

***** Wonderful! The way Charlotte is portrayed, every woman should feel a connection. I think that there is a little bit of Charlotte in all of us. I am going to lose no time in locating a copy of this author's first book, because I am a huge fan now. *****

4 out of 5 stars how Charlotte finds her groove.......2004-09-08

Thirty something Manhattanite Charlotte Stiles cannot believe that Corrine (her mother insisted she call by her name) just died. The "Ask the Doctor" research librarian is a bit off but not just because of the death of the only person who loved her (albeit from a distance). It is hard to believe because Corrine was filled with vigor and élan traveling the globe as a nutty but likable artist.

The will shakes Charlotte to the core because Corrine's stipulation for her daughter to inherit her Soho loft, she must live there for one year with her father, whom she thought died over three decades ago. Charlotte cannot even look at him so how is she to live with William LaViolette for one year. One thing is for sure it is not by seeing a hunk of an actor. Her only help lives in San Francisco, but Paul is there for her encouraging her as they talk over the Net; that is not counting her chats with mom.

When the tale concentrates on a deep character study of what is THE ESSENTIAL CHARLOTTE, the story line is superb; when the subplot dips into chick lit turf it remains fun but typical candy fare. Overall Libby Schmais keeps her novel at the highest quality levels as readers become acquainted with Charlotte through her activities, discussions with her deceased mom, and the three males (dad, the actor, and Paul) currently in her life. Fans of powerful character-driven dramas will want to read the near perfect tale of how Charlotte finds her groove.

3 out of 5 stars Easy, fun, light - great beach read.......2004-02-17

An easy, fun read along the lines of other "pink books" out these days, The Essential Charlotte is different because of its sense of innocence and its Jane Austen-ish portrayal of modern-day daily life.

Whether intended or not, Schmais has managed to fit in all the mundane daily activities of most professional, single women of today's world - work and career, dating and the search for a partner, reproductive issues and decisions, dysfunctional family dynamics, the loss of parents - and create an image of life in society as a middle-class white, female.

In the process, Schmais tells a sweet, sometimes funny story of Charlotte's quest for happiness (mirrored through her favorite computer game and spurred on by the voice of her dead mother).

While I cannot credit Schmais with Austen's biting satirical and political undercurrents, The Essential Charlotte is fun and, although there is some sex, would be a good choice for that set of teen readers who are past juvenile fiction but still like a happy ending.

2 out of 5 stars a chore to read.......2003-12-01

this is the first book i've felt compelled to review and, obviously, it's not because i loved it. i read "the perfect elizabeth" and thought it was only slightly entertaining. after reading the reviews for "the essential charlotte", i decided to give libby schmais another chance. i really wish i hadn't. the story was soooo boring and redundant, the characters were underdeveloped. i can't let myself leave a book unfinished so i practically forced myself to read it, which wasted a painful three days of my summer (the point is, if it weren't so bland, i could have finished it in a few hours). if you're going to buy this book, don't expect entertainment or originality. if you want any stimulation, you're better off staring at the pretty cover for a few hours.

4 out of 5 stars 'There were five literary Brontes.'.......2007-04-25

This book is subtitled 'The essential reference to their lives and work'. I'm not sure that I agree with the word 'essential' but it is certainly a very useful source of Bronte-related facts, links and events.

I believe that this book would be a useful addition to any library as it contains the biographical facts related to the Brontes, synopses of each of the published novels and a good bibliography for those who want to do further in-depth research.

The book also contains a handy chronology and the A to Z contains details of each of the Brontes and names of those significant in their lives as well as names of characters in the books.

Recommended for those who want to know more about the Brontes but who are not (yet) ready to jump into some of the more scholarly works available.

This book includes the entire proceedings of a citizens' tribunal held in October 2002 in London on the legality of then impending war on Iraq. Further materials from 2003, as the war unfolded, have been added, together with the full documentation of the legal challenge to the British Government's decision to use armed force which was mounted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. This book provides the most comprehensive collection of legal opinion on Britain's participation in the war on Iraq.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Useful material for deciding if the war on Iraq was legal or not.......2005-07-05

This collection comprises the proceedings of a citizens' tribunal held in October 2002 into the legality of the then impending US-British attack on Iraq, CND's legal challenge in 2002 to the Labour government's decision to attack Iraq, the BBC's shadow `Judicial Review', five Opinions by Rabinder Singh and Charlotte Kilroy and the Attorney General's Response, Letters to Blair and Hoon from Public Interest Lawyers, and relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

CND argued, "1) An aggressive war is an act contrary to the law of nations, and prohibited by peremptory norms of customary international law .... 2) A war is an aggressive war unless it is conducted with lawful justification. Unless a war is authorised by the Security Council under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, or justified under Article 51 of the Charter it is unlawful." The Security Council never authorised the attack on Iraq, nor was it justified under Article 51, which upholds the right to use force in self-defence. So the war was illegal.

Further, as the Attorney-General admitted in his Confidential Note to Blair of 26 March 2003, "it must be borne in mind that the lawfulness of any occupation after the conflict has ended is still governed by the legal basis for the use of force." As the attack was unlawful, so the ensuing war against the Iraqi people's sovereignty and political independence is unlawful.

Security Council Resolution 1483 of 22 May 2003 did not legitimise the invasion or the occupation. It called on the occupying powers to conduct the occupation in accordance with international law. Similarly, the UN has not legitimised the Israeli occupation when it called on Israel to conduct its occupation of the occupied territories in accordance with international law. Resolution 1483 stressed "the right of the Iraqi people freely to determine their own political future and control their own natural resources" and asserted "that the day when Iraqis govern themselves must come quickly".

Now the Bush and Blair governments are preparing further wars. Their rationale for attacking Iran is that it should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. But, as Colin Warbrick, Professor of Law at Durham University, stated at the Citizens' Inquiry, "a state is entitled to develop, obtain and deploy any weapons as an exercise of its sovereignty. Even if a State develops weapons in breach of a treaty, say the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, there is no right in international law for a State to use forcible counter-measures against the wrong-doing State by reason of its illegality alone."
