Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great value for the price.......2007-08-02

Let's face it, there are better editions of Dickens out there. You get what you pay for. This is not a top of the line leather edition. For the price, though, you can't beat it. It is what it is, a reasonably priced leather edition of four of his novels. At five dollars apiece, the price can not be beat.

1 out of 5 stars Pretentious.......2007-06-07

Buying books because they look good on your shelf is pretentious and phony - and this book capitalizes on that. I got this as a gift and was amazed when I read it at the number of typos in it. There is simply no way this collection was proofed by an editor - that or the editing company is one of the worst in the world.

Buy these fantastic books, but not this edition, unless you just want people to think you read Dickens.

2 out of 5 stars If nothing else, it looks good on your bookshelf........2007-03-13

You would do better off buying these books individually from a different publisher.
It sounds impressive, leather bound, gilded edges, but it is very cheaply done. On the plus side, it does have a ribbon book mark so you don't have to buy your own.
But this book was poorly edited, filled with needless typos, and with all four of these books available from numerous other publishers, I would suggest to just buy it from them.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it,.......2006-02-12

I'm a big fan of long drawn out novles. I've always been a fan of Dickens. This book has on eof my favorite stories by his pen: Great Expectations. His style is very personal I found it a lot like Tolkien. His ability to tell a good tale is clear as the reader becomes part of the story. Very nice volume and worth the time and money in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars Lousy Binding.......2005-12-20

I've read all but "A Christmas Carol" in this edition. I've found several typos. Moreover, the binding is becoming unglued. I estimate by the time I finish "A Christmas Carol" the binding will be totally exposed. I value permanent books (otherwise I would buy paperbacks). I suggest anyone who enjoys Dickens buy a better edition.

5 out of 5 stars The original and still the best time management system.......2005-08-09

If you are browsing the business self-help books and finally get tired of all the re-hashed nonsense available, then turn to this out of print masterpiece.

Charles Hobbs virtually invented the time management field. His Time Power system became the basis for all others. Dr. Hobbs invented the way to utilize the Day Timer 2 Page per day planner. The planner coupled with his very well thought out Time Power system makes one a very formidible force in their workplace.

The Franklin Planner people (who began by working for Dr. Hobbs) simply ripped-off his entire program. If you can find a set of the Time Power tapes from the early 1980's and compare them to the "original" Franklin Planner (pre Franklin Covey) tapes you will notice that the Franklin seminar is virtually the same down to the very same analogies and methphors! That's some nerve. Well, Dr. Hobbs eventually won a settlement and it seems that Franklin Covey won the lottery. But that's business. The cream does not always rise to the top.

However, I digress. The program outlined by Dr. Hobbs asks you to examine your life and to do some careful introspection before embarking on his system to manage your time. This is because your core beliefs and character will guide you in the daily decisions over what to prioritize and at what level of urgency. Don't skip over this part! I skipped it when I first took the seminar, then fell off the wagon as it were, using the Time Power system. Years later I got out the book and my tapes and gave the system another go this time really working at it and the results are truly amazing.

Time Power really shines when Dr. Hobbs explains how to incorporate the 2 Page per Day planner (Day Timers or any other brand) into the Time Power system. By using both Time Power and the appropriate tool, you will see a marked improvement in your productivity at work and a marked improvement in your family life as well.

Dr. Hobbs always keeps it simple. His system is simple to learn, the only hard part is self-discipline. This book is also blessedly free of psycho-babble.

Pick up your copy before it's too late!

Incidentally, Day Timers Inc. still offers the "Time Power" seminar. It's a version of Dr. Hobbs original seminar put on by the very capable Trapper Woods. This seminar is what I would call "Hobbs light" and that is no slam. It is a very good seminar, and Trapper Woods is an excellent teacher, and he gives Dr. Hobbs the credit due him.

5 out of 5 stars Freedom from Tyranny of the Urgent.......2007-05-07

In my openion this book is a must read for every Christian who has found themselves not having the "time" to accomplish what God has in a 24 hour day. The author does a fantastic job of using scripture to point out that Christ had urgent request before Him often but He did what the Father planned for Him to do. Jesus obeyed the Father with the plan His Father had choosen Him for. This book has taught me to carfully examine the time God has given me and pay close attention to the urgent, a cell call, email, whatever the urgent and make sure it is of God. Also the author helps you to evaluate your time in writing to see where you waist time. In doing this you creat time to accomplish the task you are called to and eliminate those "urgent" things that distract you. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Unlike typical orginizational books.......2005-04-18

Several years ago, I bought this book for myself. It was a great help during a time of massive transition. Today, I am buying it for a friend.

If you know that you don't have time for what is really important to you, but you aren't sure why or how to fix it - this book is like a ray of sunshine piercing through the clouds. Unlike typical organizational books this book does not focus on taming paper, cataloging information, to do lists or household choirs.

This book does not assume that each reader is the same. But, this book does focus on the freedom to be in the center of God's will and how that applies to your life, one day at a time. An added plus for the time cruched person who needs this saged wisdom: the book is a relatively quick read.

Today it is being placed on my annual must read list - I highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Book that will Enrich the Life of the Believer.......1999-10-01

Hummel's "Freedom from Tyranny..." is a wonderful amplification of his booklet "Tyranny of the Urgent." Like its predecessor, the book encourages you to examine your life and realign your priorities by seeking to live a holy life. This book is a beautiful balance of illustrative vignettes, Scripture, and Hummel's thoughts.

The book is very encouraging, uplifting, and peace-inducing.

I've been leading a small group study in which we are slowly digesting the book and attempting, with God's help, to apply it. The group members unanimously love the book. They all feel uplifted and have remarked on Hummel's giftedness in encouraging us rather than making us feel guilty that we haven't mastered the topics yet.

This book is a gift to yourself. I encourage you to read it with an open heart, then give a copy to loved ones.

I've returned to order an additional five. That brings my total to 20 so far.

God bless you.

4 out of 5 stars Reclaim Your Time.......1997-12-08

This book is great for someone who is stressed out because they are always so busy dealing with the urgent that they find themself forgetting the important. While many books on time management are great for motivation - this one brings time management tips to you in a practical manner - with questions for reflection and application at the end of each chapter.

There were two sections of this book that I found particularly helpful. One dealt with the difference between being efficient - and being effective. Before reading this, I had never realized that a person could show 100% efficiency in something but never have it be effective in helping anyone! The second section that helped me was a list of 7 tips and ways to say no. One of the most helpful tips was to learn to "go with your gifts" when making the choice between two good things.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to reclaim their time.

Here is a fascinating, detailed look at the life of Charles Darwin: naturalist, geologist, and independent thinker. In his author's note, Caldecott Honor illustrator Peter Sis (Starry Messenger, Tibet: Through the Red Box) writes that Darwin always regretted not learning how to draw. However, he could and did take "dense and vivid" written notes, from which Sis drew his inspiration. Readers will spend hours poring over the gorgeous, intricately crafted pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations depicting layer upon layer of Darwin's life as he developed his theories about the origins of life and natural selection. Tidbits from Darwin's extensive and legendary voyage on the Beagle, notes on Galapagos tortoises, bloodsucking benchuca bugs, and Toxodon skeletons, and particulars from his family life intermingle with each other--just as in real life. Crammed with a veritable muddle of diary entries, cameo portraits, diagrams, natural illustrations, maps, timelines, a gatefold spread, and narrative divided into "Public Life," "Private Life," and "Secret Life" blocks of text, The Tree of Life will certainly be overwhelming to some readers; for other, less linear thinkers, it will be sheer, chaotic delight. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In this brilliant presentation of a revolutionary thinker's life, the picture book becomes an art form

As far as I can judge, I am not apt to follow blindly the lead of other men . . .

Charles Darwin was, above all else, an independent thinker who continues even now to influence the way we look at the natural world. His endless curiosity and passion for detail resulted in a wealth of notebooks, diaries, correspondence, and published writings that Peter Sís transforms into a visual treasure trove. A multilayered journey through Darwin’s world, The Tree of Life begins with his childhood and traces the arc of his life through university and career, following him around the globe on the voyage of the Beagle, and home to a quiet but momentous life devoted to science and family. Sís uses his own singular vision to create a gloriously detailed panorama of a genius’s trajectory through investigating and understanding the mysteries of nature. In pictures executed in fine pen and ink and lush watercolors – cameo portraits, illustrated pages of diary, cutaway views of the Beagle, as well as charts, maps, and a gatefold spread – Peter Sís has shaped a wondrous introduction to Charles Darwin.

Though I liked the book very much and enjoyed reading all of the facts about Charles Darwin, I think that the format was BUSY. All over each page there were illustrations and little facts of interest. I wanted to read them all... and did! But, I prefer a more straight forward format.

This is a beautiful book! It gives you a vivid picture of Charles Darwin's life. Very enjoyable -- my son and I both got to know Darwin well from this book! I'm inspired to read all those books Darwin wrote.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem.......2004-08-01

This is a wonderful book. Great illustrations with much detail about Darwin's life (all of it, family, career, adventures) including "pages" from his diary. I bought it for my son who really liked it. We read it together the first time, then he explored it on his own. He used it for a 4th grade school project and got an A. I enjoyed it, too.

5 out of 5 stars To life!.......2004-05-28

If you are at all familiar with Peter Sis, then you linger under the incorrect impression that you know what to expect from him. Carefully researched subjects. Illustrations containing infinitesimally small people, places, and things. Engaging and entertaining plots. I tell you now, ladies and gents, "Tree of Life" takes all of this and multiplies it. Quadruples it. You have never seen a picture book like this before. When you are dealing with a book that cares to discuss the origins of life itself, you need an author/illustrator comfortable with details. In this, Sis is your man.

This is a summarization and encapsulation of the life of Mr. Charles Robert Darwin. The book begins like so:

"Charles Darwin opens his eyes for the first time! He has no idea that he will (a) start a revolution when he grows up, (b) sail around the world on a five-year voyage, (c) spend many years studying nature, and (d) write a book that will change the world".

From here on in we watch Darwin learn and grow. The text is separated, initially, into two parts. One portion is in bold and discusses the facts of Darwin's life. An italicized portion below this talks about Charles's passions and desires. Up above we see little images and factoids strewn about the page willy-nilly, giving us a better sense of the times and people involved in the naturalist's life. This form and style goes out the window when Darwin joins up with the Beagle. Suddenly the pages become drawings of creatures and sights. There is a magnificent two-page spread of boxes, each one carrying an interesting fact, animal, moment, or image that Darwin encountered. It's as if his very experiences have been cataloged for the reader's viewing pleasure. Eventually Darwin returns and as he does so the pages themselves return to the previous layout. Now, however, Darwin's life has been divided into three different parts. He has a public life, a private life, and a secret (read evolutionary) life. Every individual life is outlined on each page and as we read on we understand how a single person's dreams can be affected by their personal and private triumphs and catastrophies. When, "On the Origin of the Species" is published we find a full pull-out four page spread encompassing the enormity of this publication. Images on the pages become less straightforward and more dreamlike. At long last, accompanying a vision of a solitary Magritte-like Darwin surrounded by a clan of death's head hawk moths are the words, "Charles Darwin died on April 19, 1882, and was buried in Westminster Abbey".

According to the book's author/illustrator, Darwin was, himself, unable to draw. So rather than sketch the wonders he saw while on the Beagle, the naturalist would describe his visions with great detail. In this way, Sis has become Darwin's right hand. It is impossible to flip through this book and not be amazed at the intricacy of the project. Sis is almost a pointillist at times, his Seurat-like dots forming everything from the galleys of a ship to thousands of tiny houses in London. A child reading this book could pore over a single page for hours, interpreting and reinterpreting each digression and off-hand comment. Honestly, you've never seen a book like this one before. The image that stands out most prominently in my mind is that of Darwin astride a giant rock dove that is made up of a thousand domesticated descendents.

Which brings us to the idea of a children's book concerned with evolution in the first place. "The Tree of Life" is hardly alone in this respect. For example, the ambitious "Our Family Tree" by Lisa Westberg Peters is far more direct in voicing the facts of evolution than this book in many respects. Here, Sis seems to avoid controversy as much as possible. The spread that describes every chapter and thought that went into the making of "On the Origin of the Species" is accompanied by the caveat, "Darwin did not say that God had not created life on earth. What he said was that creation did not happen all at once". Take that. Some time is spent examining the Bishop Samuel Wilberforce's objections and the Great Oxford Debate of 1860, but it is given far less time or energy than the book's page on, say, the Galapagos Islands. I would have liked some explanations on why some people didn't (and still do not) like Darwin's theories. Even a cursory explanation of the opposition wouldn't have been inappropriate considering the subject matter. Alas, here Sis is lacking.

All this notwithstanding, this is a fine piece of kiddie lit. If you remain unconvinced and require just a little more information about this book's fine nature, I merely direct you to the endpapers. In most picture books, the endpapers in the front of the book match and duplicate the endpapers at the back. Yet even here, Sis has not skimped. From the evolving feet of horses to the hand of Michaelangelo's God reaching towards Adam's, these pages are all individual and unique, making them just as important as any other portion of the book. I shudder to think what will happen to them when this book comes out in paperback. Though some will argue that this book is too advanced for children, challenge this statement. Test it for yourself. Any child that likes detail, precision, and nature will at least enjoy portions of this book. In a word - fabulous.

Book Description

Charles Dickinson's novels and short stories have won widespread acclaim for their deft characterization, humanity, and humor. Now Dickinson slips beyond the bounds of mundane realism to create a poignant tale that bears comparison to the works of Jack Finney and Jonathan Carroll. Euclid, Illinois, is a town of many shortcuts. Josh Wink-ler, a local artist and longtime resident, knows these irregular pathways well, but is thoroughly taken aback when a hasty dash down a familiar walk deposits him fifteen minutes in the past-literally. At first, Josh is more intrigued than alarmed by this accidental time travel. Then a lost young woman appears, claiming to be from 1908. . . . A Shortcut in Time is a moving and unforgettable book about the way the past can affect the present, as well as, sometimes, the other way around.

2 out of 5 stars Don't blink...........2007-04-27

This book was entertaining but it's sad ending overshadowed the storyline.
It made me think... what? Don't blink at the end or you'll miss it. I went back and reread the last few pages a couple of times hoping that I had missed something but alas, that is how it ends. It's too bad because it really was good up to that point. I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars A Shortcut in Time.......2007-01-20

Based on the reviews I read here in Amazon, I decided to check this book out of the library. I liked it quite a bit while I was reading it and even recommended it to my sister. We both happened to finish the book on the same day and spoke on the phone that night. It seems we had the exact same reaction when it came to the last page: "Is that it?!!??'.
It was SUCH an unsatisfying ending (the worse I've ever come across) that I even checked to make sure no pages were torn from the book.
I gave it two stars instead of one because I didn't hate the book, just the very last page.
One I'd recommend strongly is Jack Finney's book Time and Again. I started on that after A Shortcut in Time. It's a fiction novel but includes drawings of late 1800 New York City done by the main character in the book.

4 out of 5 stars Great story, unsatisfying conclusion.......2006-10-04

As others mention, any fan of Jack Finny's TIME AND AGAIN will enjoy A SHORTCUT IN TIME. It's a fine example of a story with a strong narrative drive which keeps one turning pages in anticipation of something happens.

The work is flawed by an unsatisfying ending, with the protagonist's marriage replaced by a marriage to another woman in an alternate future. This is fine for those who speculate on the conseqences of changing the past, but dumping wife #1, with whom the reader has invested some rapport, and replacing her in the last few pages with wife #2, whom the reader doesn't have enough time to care about is not good storytelling. When the lost daughter is finally recovered, there are questions left unanswered, and the reader is left with an unsettling lack of closure. One senses the writer just said the hell with it and arbitrarily finished the story.

Had this been a conventional novel, I would have rated it two stars because of these plot flaws, and the pedestrian character voices. But stll I kept turning the pages because I wanted to see what happened--and that's basically what a book like this is about.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Time Travel fans.......2006-06-16

It took me three months to read Time and Again by Jack Finney, which I liked but it was a long haul. A Shortcut in Time cranked at record speed. I read it in two days - could not put it down! I'm a huge fan of time travel books with The Mirror and The Time Traveler's Wife as two of my favorites. A Shortcut in Time has quickly been added to my favorites list. What a great find. What a great read. Extremely well written. I loved this book!

1 out of 5 stars NO Stars - Disappointing.......2006-05-25

The premise of the story is good - time travel, back and forth. The characters are weak and unbelievable. They don't speak to each other in a normal way - and the girl from 1908 is totally stiff. The ending was so disappointing that I threw the book on a chair and when I came back my puppy had torn it to shreds --- that was the best ending for this farse of a piece of literature. Save your money for something else.

5 out of 5 stars Time Power.......2002-01-07

I read this book in 1996 and forgot how good it is. Rereading it now and recommend it to anyone who is looking to be a better manager of their time and life. This is the classic time managment book, forget Covey, he ripped his ideas off Hobbs. For about $.. (it is in paperback) you can save yourself a bundle. ...

5 out of 5 stars A Life Changing Masterpiece!.......2001-12-17

This book should be required reading for every man, woman and child, and especially required for anyone interesting in improving themselves! Dr. Hobbs has an excellent system of time management to be sure, but the genius of his system is that it includes ALL areas of your life, not just in the work place. I stumbled upon this book in 1987 in the library. After reading the first few pages I immediately went out and purchased it and began marking it up. My wife did the same. I shared it at work and in my ministry. His system of understanding personal congruency and documenting Unifying Principles changed my life and has been used by me and loads of my friends for 14 years! It works! If you can get this book, GET IT.

5 out of 5 stars Please reprint this book!.......2001-10-01

This is not your usual techniques and how to book. It's a philosophy of managing your life. I have found the core idea of Self-unification of behavior and principles and the logically deduced goals sequenced according to the Pyramid of Productivity and implemented with the Concentration of Power turbocharges goal achievment and self-esteem. The one reviewer is right. This is not a quick read. It's not dense or boring. Acutally, his breadth and his down to earth approach, makes it seem easy. I have one copy heavily marked up and I recommend that if you see it in a bookshop--buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-09-18

Several years ago, I bought about a dozen books on time management and found this and Alan Lakien's books to be the best. Time Power is intense and required several months of part time effort for me to complete. It's truly unfortunate that Mr. Hobbs' book is now out of print. Charles pioneered modern time management theory and practice. All the current time management experts, trainers and consultants derive their core concepts and ideas from Charles Hobbs. This work is a bit out of step with current practices in that we increasingly moving away from paper based systems toward electronic time management products such as MS Outlook. On the other hand, the most important thoughts and ideas presented in this book are timeless. I recently began working with Tony Robbins' "Time of Your Life" CD program which is also quite good.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life from ineffective to effective........1999-05-09

I found this book in a used book store in 1985. After reading it I immediately went about implementing the system defined by Dr. Hobbs. The results were amazing. I started to get high marks in university, I accomplished long term goals and increased my own self esteem.

I continue to follow this system today and I learn more and more about effective time management every year.

I recommend this book most highly to anyone interested in CONTINUOUS self improvement.

3 out of 5 stars honest, interesting but uninspiring.......2000-07-06

If you're looking for the biography of a great man, a hero, this isn't it. But one of the good things that has come from a culture where anyone can publish a book is that you're almost certain to be able to hear both sides of any story. Barkley has been pilloried by the media for his antics; it is interesting as a fan of sport to read Barkley's account of events and his role in them.

Other than those details, the book's contents are not going to surprise you unless you're unaware of how poor black people grow up in the rural South. The requisite funny anecdotes are there, along with a pro's insights into the game of basketball. But if you're looking for a biography that will inspire you, look elsewhere.

Book Description

In succinct, poetic style, Charles Genoud offers a vision of human existence as it can be lived and embodied, once we take the risk to discard negative concepts and assumptions. Drawing on Buddhist texts, shamanism, and the wisdom of thinkers such as Maurice Blanchot and Georges Bataille, Gesture of Awareness weaves insights from these diverse traditions into a coherent, compelling whole. At the same time, this is a workbook that encourages readers to engage with the material in a way that can make a practical difference in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars a miraculous book.......2007-08-17

This a miraculous book that is almost impossible to describe. It must not be merely read, thought about or marveled at - although it is beautifully written, thought-provoking and marvelous. It must be savored and allowed to sink in. Above all, it must be experienced, because the ideas and movement exercises offered here are pathways to directly experience the mystery of pure being. If that sounds abstract, have no fear. Charles will lead you step by step -- everywhere, nowhere and right here.

5 out of 5 stars Poetic Teachings.......2007-08-05

This is a beautiful expression of classic Buddhist teachings. Genoud uses movement to "embody" the lessons, so the reader can actually play with the ideas physically.

5 out of 5 stars A Poetic Teaching of Awareness.......2007-04-18

This book by Charles Genoud is a pure pleasure to read. Poetry or teaching of wisdom...it is both!! Gesture of Awareness brings a new view of reality, our minds and our bodies. I have learned a new way to look at meditation and movement practices and it is changing the way I lead these practices.

5 out of 5 stars This moment, as is........2007-04-07

Charles Genoud is my teacher and friend, so I'm not an unbiased reviewer. On the other hand, having attended his retreats and workshops for a dozen years or so, I'm in a position to attest that this book achieves something I thought was impossible: it catches on the printed page the flavor of Charles's uncatchable work. The Gesture of Awareness exercises that Charles has developed elude description, not because they're complex but because they're so subversively simple. Every time you try to make something of them (some effort, some concept, some "special" experience), Charles pulls the rug out from under you once again. Suffice it to say that meditative and spiritual practices generally introduce the dimension of liberation first while doing the practice, with the eventual aim of transcending the practice so that liberation is present while you're doing nothing more cosmic than walking across the room. Charles takes you straight to that dimension while walking across the room.

Book Description

In this pathbreaking philosophical work, Elizabeth Grosz points the way toward a theory of becoming to replace the prevailing ontologies of being in social, political, and biological discourse. Arguing that theories of temporality have significant and underappreciated relevance to the social dimensions of science and the political dimensions of struggle, Grosz engages key theoretical concerns related to the reality of time. She explores the effect of time on the organization of matter and on the emergence and development of biological life. Considering how the relentless forward movement of time might be conceived in political and social terms, she begins to formulate a model of time that incorporates the future and its capacity to supersede and transform the past and present.

Grosz develops her argument by juxtaposing the work of three major figures in Western thought: Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Henri Bergson. She reveals that in theorizing time as an active, positive phenomenon with its own characteristics and specific effects, each of these thinkers had a profound effect on contemporary understandings of the body in relation to time. She shows how their allied concepts of life, evolution, and becoming are manifest in the work of Gilles Deleuze and Luce Irigaray. Throughout The Nick of Time, Grosz emphasizes the political and cultural imperative to fundamentally rethink time: the more clearly we understand our temporal location as beings straddling the past and the future without the security of a stable and abiding present, the more transformation becomes conceivable.

3 out of 5 stars A good piece of work with more potential.......2005-04-06

I first became interested in this book after seeing it in a bookshop. Having read some Darwin and a fair bit of Bergson I was interested. It is rare indeed nowadays to see any work at all on the concept of time in any other form than the typical linear classical physics/relativity idea. This posits time as something that either acts as a medium through which matter moves or in the case of relativity as another dimension much like the three known space dimensions. In both cases time is strongly spatialised i.e. thought of in the same way that space is.

Time is of course strongly linked to change whether it is the idea of change prevalent in ancient times e.g. Plato and Aristotle, Heraclitus or the more modern versions used in science. Grosz has studied time's presence through three well known figures Charles Darwin, Friedrich Nietzsche and Henri Bergson. Darwin's concern was how organisms evolved over time, Nietzsche how the human being uses the "Will to Power" to become more and Bergson was interested in both. That is in how organisms evolved and what duration (time) actually is, especially in comparison to space.

Grosz analyses all of them in turn. She does something unexpected with Darwin, she suggests that natural selection is in fact a positive "force" rather than a purely negative influence on species. I did not find myself believing this, it makes more of natural selection that it is originally posited to be. In turn she considers the ideas of Nietzsche who did foresee Bergson to some degree in that he proposed "The Will to Power" which can be recognised a little in Bergson's elan vital. Finally she discusses Bergson's ideas on time/duration, evolution, intelligence, instinct and so on. She studies Bergson far more deeply than either of the other two.

She also relates these concepts to politics especially those of feminism, racism and other forms of political struggle. Her discussion of Bergson is deep and she understands his work well. At times I found myself impressed at her whole grasp of Bergson's issues. She locates a kind of complete whole within his work which eluded me. I had read Creative Evolution, Time and Free Will and The Creative Mind but have not as yet covered Duration and Simultaneity or Mind-Energy.

I find that she takes the most from Bergson and relates it at the highest level to much else in our current cultural and political reality. However I did not feel convinced by her study of Darwin and the earlier parts of the book felt a little disjointed. Some parts, especially those on Bergson flowed well together. A good piece of work with more potential.
